Move the bricks to complete your PhD.

How to play: Use your arrow keys to move the bricks. When two bricks of the same type touch, they merge into one! However, your ideas and experiments may not always work — they may produce the sticky garbage , which is resistant to moves. Two garbage bricks vanish when they touch. You will stop producing garbage after getting a paper (except for one more piece to help you eliminate any existing garbage). A relationship upgrades any brick it touches for the first time. The brick shows the number of times you have benefited from it. When the 10-sec relationship ends, it will become a break-up (or garbage if you didn't use it), which downgrades bricks until you have repaid the benefits.

Getting a Game Studies PhD: A Guide for Aspiring Video Game Scholars

Originally written by Bo in the fall of 2016 , with feedback from Harrison Gish, Teddy Pozo, Whit Pow, Dietrick Squinkifer, and many more via social media. Last updated April 2019 . Suggestions for additions to this list are very welcome. See contact info at right of page.

Over the last few years, I have received messages from many aspiring game studies scholars: current undergraduate students, master’s students, or other folks who are excited about approaching video games academically and want to know how to get the training and the credentials to enter the field. What inspiring messages to receive!

The question I still hear often is, “Where can I go to get my Ph.D. in game studies?” Answering that question can be surprisingly tricky. Though game studies is a growing and arguably well-established field, at present, there aren’t Ph.D. programs in North America that grant degrees specifically dedicated to video games. But don’t despair. Below is information and recommendations for how to achieve the goal of getting a Ph.D. that will position you for a career in game studies.

Whether you yourself are an aspiring game studies scholar or an educator working with a student who is interested in pursuing game studies, I hope this handy guide will serve as a helpful starting point for your search…

What Is “Game Studies”?

Before you know which Ph.D. programs to apply to, you have to know whether game studies is right for you.

Game studies is the scholarly field dedicated to exploring digital games, analog games, and play. Though some of the early texts that have become foundational for game studies come from the early- and mid-twentieth century, game studies as an academic field got started in the 1990’s. Over the past two decades, game studies scholars have produced a rich array of work that addresses questions like how to define games, why players play, and what cultural meaning is communicated through games. In another sense though, game studies is still a relatively new discipline. Many scholars from other fields are surprised to hear that there is an entire corner of academia dedicated to games.

Most recently, game studies has taken a turn away from its formalist roots and toward issues of culture and social justice. Some of the most vibrant areas of game studies today include scholarship on video games and LGBTQ issues, race, ability, identity, and diversity. Tabletop gaming, esports, live streaming, and game histories are also growing areas of game studies research.

Many game studies scholars do also make games, and some of the most insightful game studies work has come out of collaborations between scholars and makers. However, for the purposes of this guide, “game studies” refers to the work of analyzing games rather than making them.

A note for the 2023 update: With that said, a growing number of grad school applicants are interested in pursuing what’s called “theory/practice” or “research creation” scholarship. This kind of scholarship combines creative and critical work. For example, a student doing theory/practice scholarship might both make and write about games. In my experience, many faculty mentors are excited about this work, but often programs and institutions themselves are not set up to support it, especially in the US. If you are interested in doing theory/practice work, I encourage you to speak directly with your potential faculty mentors and ask for a frank assessment of whether other students have successfully pursued related projects in their programs.

The Dilemma for Aspiring Game Studies Scholars

There has never been a more exciting time to study video games, or to make a career out of researching games and their players. The medium of games is growing and changing, calling for new voices and a wider range of critical perspectives. Game studies is poised to become an increasingly important academic field. Many universities are hiring faculty in this area. To thrive, game studies needs a vibrant next generation of scholars.

However, for those who aspire to become game studies professionals, figuring out which educational path to take can be difficult. Though it is becoming more and more common for universities to offer courses on video games, and though institutions like USC and NYU (among others) have excellent programs dedicated to games, currently the only available graduate degrees specifically dedicated to games focus on game making — that is, game design and development — not on the academic study of games. While there are doctoral programs that allow students to tailor their education toward games, there are no institutions yet that offer a dedicated, games-focused Ph.D.

At this point, maybe you’re wondering: should I even get a Ph.D.? Good question. It depends what kind of job you’re looking for. Entering a doctoral program is a big commitment (most take five to seven years), so being informed before deciding whether and where to apply is important. But let’s be frank. While you don’t need a Ph.D. to do video game analysis per se, a doctorate is considered a basic requirement for most research-focused faculty positions. For better or for worse, if you’re hoping to be a full-time, tenure-track university or college professor whose focus is games scholarship (rather than game design), getting a Ph.D. is still the expected path.

So, what do you do if you want to be a game studies scholar but you can’t get your Ph.D. in game studies?

OPTION 1: Pick a Ph.D. Program with Game Studies Faculty In It

One option is to apply to Ph.D. programs that are not specifically focused on games, but which have game studies scholars on their faculty. These should be faculty members whose work you’re familiar with (if you recognize the names but don’t know what their research is about, it’s time to do some reading) and whom you would be excited to learn from.

Some things to keep in mind: If the program you enter only has one or two games studies faculty, you’ll be working closely with these folks throughout your time in the program — so you want to make sure, as best you can, that they’re a good fit for you. If you’re seriously considering applying, I recommend sending enthusiastic but gracious (individual) emails to these potential mentors. That way you can learn more about how/if they see your interests fitting with the program. You’ll also already be on their radar when they sit down to review the pool of applications.

When you look at faculty rosters, remember that “visiting professors” and adjuncts, while they can be amazing educators, may only be working in the department for a short time. Also, think about the department you’d be applying to, not just the scholar you want to work with. Is it a media studies department, a communication department, a computer science department? The discipline in which you get your Ph.D. will significantly affect the kind of scholarship you get the chance to do and what sorts of academic jobs you qualify for.

Below is a list of Ph.D. programs in North America that have game studies scholars as members of their faculty. This list is always growing and changing. All suggestions for additional inclusions are very welcome (see contact info at right).

OPTION 2: Pick a Ph.D. Program with Ties to a Game Design Program

A second option is to get your Ph.D. through a program that, while not explicitly focused on games, allows you to take classes in an adjacent games-specific graduate program. Often these related programs grant MFAs, but they usually involve some game studies classes.

Before applying to these programs, be sure to inquire with the faculty you are interested in working with about whether it is possible to combine coursework from your home department with classes from these related games programs.

University of Southern California – Ph.D. in Media Arts + Practice Take courses in: Interactive Media and Games Division

University of Southern California – Ph.D. in Cinema and Media Studies Take courses in: Interactive Media and Games Division

UCLA – Ph.D. in Cinema and Media Studies Take courses in: Design Media Arts ( UCLA Gamelab )

OPTION 3: Pick a Ph.D. Program That Supports Interdisciplinary Digital Scholarship

The third option is to make your own way by picking a Ph.D. that supports interdisciplinary research and will allow you to tailor your education toward your interest in games. Ideally, this will be a program that has an explicit link to digital media, as this will give you access to scholars and colleagues similarly committed to related concerns around contemporary technology.

The upside to this option is that you get to be the architect of your own scholarly formation. Who do you want to be? You decide! The downside is that you will need to do the extra legwork to read widely outside your coursework and build a network of mentors from other institutions.

Brown University – Ph.D. in Modern Culture and Media

Concordia University – Individualized Program Ph.D. (INDI) (Concordia’s INDI degree has also been included above in the section on game studies faculty.) Game studies faculty: Mia Consalvo, Sandra Gabriele, Rilla Khaled

Rutgers University – Ph.D. in Communication, Information, and Library Studies

Simon Frasier University – Ph.D. in Interactive Arts & Technology

UC Berkeley – Ph.D. in any field with Designated Emphasis in New Media Berkeley Center for New Media

Whatever path you take toward your career in game studies, good luck! You bring an important new set of perspectives to video games, and the field is better for having you in it.

Grading System

Every item in our inventory has been inspected, very strictly graded, and bagged for its protection.

Shrink Wrapped. Still in the original factory shrink wrap, with condition visible through shrink noted. For example, "SW (NM)" means shrink wrapped in near-mint condition.

Perfect. Brand new.

Near Mint. Like new with only the slightest wear, many times indistinguishable from a Mint item. Close to perfect, very collectible. Board & war games in this condition will show very little to no wear and are considered to be punched unless the condition note says unpunched.

Excellent. Lightly used, but almost like new. May show very small spine creases or slight corner wear. Absolutely no tears and no marks, a collectible condition.

Very Good. Used. May have medium-sized creases, corner dings, minor tears or scuff marks, small stains, etc. Complete and very useable.

Very well used, but complete and useable. May have flaws such as tears, pen marks or highlighting, large creases, stains, marks, etc.

  • Boxed items are listed as "code/code" where the first code represents the box, and the second code describes the contents. When only one condition is listed, then the box and contents are in the same condition.
  • A "plus" sign indicates that an item is close to the next highest condition. Example, EX+ is an item between Excellent and Near Mint condition. A "minus" sign indicates the opposite.
  • Major defects and/or missing components are noted separately.
  • Boardgame counters are punched, unless noted. Due to the nature of loose counters, if a game is unplayable it may be returned for a refund of the purchase price.
  • In most cases, boxed games and box sets do not come with dice.
  • The cardboard backing of miniature packs is not graded. If excessively worn, they will be marked as "card worn."
  • Flat trays for SPI games are not graded, and have the usual problems. If excessively worn, they will be marked as "tray worn."
  • Remainder Mark - A remainder mark is usually a small black line or dot written with a felt tip pen or Sharpie on the top, bottom, side page edges and sometimes on the UPC symbol on the back of the book. Publishers use these marks when books are returned to them.

What is a MAPP?

“MAPP” stands for Minimum Advertised Price Policy . There are several publishers in the gaming industry that have MAPPs, and it is important to stay current with the different policies out there, as they change fairly often. Each publisher has its own specific set of MAPP rules, but in general, a MAPP restricts retailers from advertising the publisher’s products below prices set by the publisher. This advertisement restriction is generally focused toward online advertising, but it may also apply to physical flyers and ads. Importantly, a vendor that uses a MAPP may not fix the retail price; at best, it may only suggest to the retailer the retail price—hence the acronym MSRP .

Publisher MAPs and Policies

Below is a list of MAPP pricing and policy details from the publishers we carry. Please contact your PHD Account Manager with any questions you may have. Not adhering to MAPPs from the following publishers may impede your ability to obtain product from those publishers. Each publisher has its own MAPP terms, so please read carefully. The Games PhD: Yes, It’s a Good Investment

Games

The commercial games industry is growing faster than the U.S. economy as a whole. For the 2009-2012 period, growth in the industry was 9.7%, while growth for the U.S. economy was just 2.4%. Further, direct employment in the games industry grew at an annual rate of 9%, while total U.S. employment increased at an annual rate of just 0.724%.

This booming industry has added $6.2 billion to the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP), with 146,000 jobs (both direct and indirect) depending on it. Worldwide revenues are expected to reach $107 billion in 2017, and the current U.S. industry directly employs more than 42,000 people in 36 states. It’s no wonder professionals in the industry averaged close to $95,000 in 2012, which is more than double the National Average Wage Index (AWI) for that year.

As you may have guessed, there has never been a better time to choose a career in the games industry, and colleges across the America have taken notice. Many schools now offer competitive degree programs in just about every area of game design and development and at every level. And because more game designers than ever before opt to work overseas, some schools, such as Becker College (Worcester, MA), even offer a Japanese Culture Specialization within their game design program.

Game programming, game design, game audio, game development, game management and production, art and design, writing for games, game and interactive media, computer science, software development, and software engineering are just a few of the programs that can help graduates land a lucrative position in the games industry fairly quickly—even at the bachelor’s level. Aim for an advanced degree, and the chances of landing an even higher paying position greatly increase. Why? Because advanced degrees are in high demand in just about every professional career field.

Find a school

Employers know that candidates with an advanced degree have certain skills that go beyond technology and creativity. Critical thinking, complex problem solving, and correct decision-making are three of the most desired skills employer’s look for. PhDs excel in all three areas. Employers also recognize that PhDs have the skills needed to organize and lead teams, teach, manage, and conduct research. While these skills are important in the academic world, they are also an asset at the higher levels at most major game studios, software development firms, and interactive media companies.

A games PhD will continue to work for graduates well after they’ve landed their dream job too. In fact, stability and salary growth are practically guaranteed at this level. Here’s why:

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the unemployment rate for PhD and Professional Degree holders is a mere 1.7% and 1.5%, respectively, and the rate for master’s degree holders is 2.4%. Compare this to 2.8%, 3.8%, and 5% for bachelor’s degree holders, associate degree holders, and those with some college, but no degree, respectively. Further, projected employment growth in the broader technology sector is an impressive 17% to 19% for the 2014-2024 decade, and salaries increased from a median average salary of $90,060-$99,000 in 2013 to $100,690 for 2015. In general, though, PhDs simply earn more. According to the BLS, the median weekly salary for PhDs is $1,623 and $1,341 per week for master’s degree holders. Bachelor’s degree holders average $1,137 per week, while associate’s degree holders and those with some college but no degree average $798 and $738 per week, respectively.

If you consider all of this and examine the average and upper level earnings for software developers overall (possibly $153,710-$159,850 per year according to the BLS and $220,000 for the highest paid game designer salary or $310,000 for the highest programmer salary, as reported by the International Game Developer Association-IGDA) and compare them to average tuition rates for PhD programs, the clear conclusion is this: an investment in a Games PhD is a good one. Let’s take a look at average tuition costs for good measure.

According to the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the average tuition for a doctorate degree at a public school was $10,725 each year for 2013-2014 school year. Private school tuition was $22,607 annually. A typical doctoral program takes five years to complete (full-time). This brings the total cost of the degree to around $53,625-$113,035, depending on whether the program is at a public or private school.

Fortunately, a number of public and private schools offer PhD programs that can help prepare students for higher-level positions in the games industry. Below are several that are at the top of their game.

How a month inside a Swiss biotech changed the game for an AIBN PhD scholar

phd game

Tahmina Tabassum was pretty sure she knew how she wanted her PhD, and wider scientific career, to play out. Then she went to Switzerland.

For three months AIBN scholar, who works in the  Wolvetang Group , relearned what she knew about industry and entrepreneurship during a placement with biotech Azafaros BV , a whirlwind experience that included a stint at the company’s headquarters in Basel.

phd game

Set up through Tahmina’s PhD supervisor Professor Ernst Wolvetang – who has collaborated with Azarfaros in the past – Tahmina’s placement continues an AIBN tradition of exposing our researchers to rigors of real-world research and development.

“Before I had very little idea about what it's like in an actual pharma or biotech company. I have always been in academia, not in biotech startups,” Tahmina says.

“But now I know, it's not as simple as it sounds. There's so much work that goes into bringing out just one translatable product that you don't even know might or might not succeed in the market.”

Tahmina is a PhD candidate in Molecular Cell Biology, completing her master’s degree at Griffith University before moving over to the University of Queensland and the AIBN.

In the Wolvetang labs, Tahmina works closely with gene-editing tools. In Switzerland, none of her time was spent in the Azarfaros labs themselves.

Instead, she was tasked with gathering information on regulatory aspects of organoid models for use in preclinical drug development process.

By regularly embedding our scholars in domestic and international startups and biotechs, AIBN researchers like Tahmina are learning what it looks like to work at the frontline of science.

By her own account, Tahmina picked up a few tricks and tips that will serve her well long after her final thesis on safer gene editing systems is submitted.

Read on to see what Tahmina uncovered, and how it has changed her thinking on her PhD and where she is heading.

Welcome back Tahmina. First time to Switzerland?

phd game

I’d been to Zurich before, but only very briefly. Basel isn’t too far away from there actually. It is a great location business wise. You are only an hour away from Germany and France. Basel is a very historic place with the most dynamic life science cluster in Europe. It’s a lot smaller compared to the places I’ve lived but is well known as the hotbed of life science.

I’ve never lived in a small city, or somewhere where there aren’t many people who look like me or speak my language, so Basel was a unique experience. I believe putting yourself in different positions and scenarios is extremely important in building awareness of different work cultures, people and in gaining knowledge simply by seeing the world.

You cannot sit in one place and expect to incorporate ideas which will only come to you if you set foot outside where you already are. Comfort primarily doesn’t drive innovation.

You linked up with Azarfaros BV while you were over there? Who are they?

Azarfaros is a biotech that mainly focuses on finding cure to rare diseases. The CSO of Azafaros, Kyle Landskroner, has been our collaborator at Wolvetang Group and so we were able to set up an industry linked placement where I worked under his supervision for three months – including one month at their offices in Europe.

My PhD mainly focuses on genetic engineering, and a lot of gene editing projects look at mutations in rare diseases. So, it really aligned with what Azarfaros needed.

Initially, the idea was to help with scientific research in their lab in Netherlands but after some thought I took more of an office role in Switzerland, which proved to be a good idea and was indeed a game changer.

What do you mean by ‘office role’?

Well, I do a lot of work here in the AIBN labs and – while it's a new experience going to a lab in a different country - I would’ve been confined within the labs doing experiments and I wouldn't be developing transversal skills.

phd game

So instead, my placement was based on a desk role where I researched into regulatory perspectives and guidelines from FDA, ICH, CDER and more around use of organoids. This was an entirely new role for me.

Achieving regulatory approvals for new drugs is central to the success of a pharma company or biotech company, and currently Azarfaros are going through this process for one of their lead compounds.

My project at Azarfaros was looking into how organoids, or stem cells technology, can play a role in regulatory approvals workflow in context to nonclinical trials.

Mainly I was investigating regulations and industry guidelines around stem cell technology, what's new and what's coming down the pipeline, especially in the wake of the FDA Modernization Act changes last year.

What’s the FDA Modernization Act?

Basically, it’s a piece of legislation in the US that now says animals are no longer mandatory for clinical trials, and that you can develop new approach methods to reduce the use of animals in trials. Of course, these new methods need to be validated and approved by FDA prior use.

phd game

Through my placement, I learned that although the Modernization Act is out there, it's still going to be a long time till people adapt these new trends into their research. And secondly, for organoids, I think there is still time for the technology to develop further.

So, I mean, it's good that the practice has started already. But there's still a long way to go before we can say that, yes, we have validated organoid models that can reduce animal testing. Or we can just use organoids and trust these results to get an orphan drug designation or an NDA.

Sounds like you covered a lot in a short time over there.

I learned so much about organoids during my time at Azarfaros. I laugh because I work in an organoid lab here at the AIBN, but I specialise in gene editing and my knowledge is limited to the science behind organoids or the research we do in lab. So, I recognised my gap in knowledge in terms of application and current trends in the organoid field.

Because I was trying to find out as much as I can about what is the status of organoids not just in research, but in industry, I had to reach out to people in the field to learn from them and meet them in person in Basel. It was a great way to build that skill to talk to people outside of your comfort zone. I can attest that this exercise remarkably improved my communication skills and confidence.

phd game

I must flag that I was on my own trying to find the relevant connections. I figured out the names myself. I figured out how to reach them myself in a country I’ve never lived in before. And I am thankful to my supervisor, Kyle, for placing this challenge instead of handing me out a list of his connections.

So even for that the experience was worth it because now I know if I really need to find someone or talk to, to get information, I can reach that person and speak without hesitation.

Who were some of the industry experts you were speaking with in Basel?

One day I went to the headquarters of pharma giant Roche and met someone who could help me a bit understand the dynamics of gene therapy and how Switzerland is going about it.

Another day, at University of Basel, there was a conference that was held on mRNAs that I attended. I met people from all around Switzerland, from Zurich, from Lausanne. And that was also a great learning and networking experience for me as there were people from all areas of the industry including Lonza, NanoVation, CSL Behring, WHO and more. The personal takeaway from that event was that there are numerous pathways you can steer your scientific career to after PhD beyond academia and experimentations.

I also met people from HUB Organoids in the Netherlands. And German company Evotec. All of these are companies I would have never reached out to because in my PhD, I am not required to talk to them.

Is science sometimes about who you know, instead of what you know?

I think it’s a balance. You need to have the prior knowledge to first start and get accepted into a PhD program.

But even getting into a PhD program is through sending emails to the right supervisors, reading their work, trying to find out who is offering a particular project that interests you.

It's a very competitive process. So, I feel like most people who do end up getting a PhD scholarship or get funded for their project, they already understand the importance of being able to talk to people, asking for opportunities, pushing yourselves out there.

And in my PhD, I have realised that it's so important to know people within the industry as well, because after your PhD, you're on your own. And these connections that you make help you take your next step.

During your PhD, the university still guides you, your supervisors are guiding you. But after that, if you do a postdoc, or you want to move to industry, you are finding your own way, where both what you know and who you know is equally important.

phd game

So it is during this time, you can make the most links, trying to understand who is involved in what kind of research, network both vertically and horizontally and maybe at some point, someone might have the right opportunity for you.

So yes, it's very important to have those kinds of collaboration. And even with UQ’s Liveris Academy, I’m networking with cross disciplinary people, you know, trying to find more opportunities for myself just by talking to people, being part of a network and understanding what they're doing.

Will this experience in Switzerland change how you approach your PhD?

I think it does change it, not just my approach to PhD but my outlook on having a career in science. It helped me realise my goals were maybe a bit dreamier, but now I feel like after coming back, I'm more thoughtful with my goals.

I know what it is possible to achieve and what will be uncertain, and that there is a big factor of luck involved. So, my perspective has changed a bit in that way.

I do want to continue to pursue industry linked projects and entrepreneurship - I do have a feel for it. I don't think I'm someone who would be super happy with a desk job, or super excited with working in the lab. I think with this experience, I kind of realised I like doing multiple things but mostly like to solve problems. I also realised that I like talking to people and doing this whole consultant kind of role.

I sure am a bit more relaxed after I came back in terms of setting realistic goals and understanding that everything I want might not come true. But, from this experience I’ve also learned that setbacks are temporary and there is always the next big thing waiting for you.
