திரை விமர்சனம்: பாட்னர்

ரூ.25 லட்சம் கடன் வாங்கி தொழில் தொடங்கும் ஸ்ரீதர் (ஆதி), நஷ்டமடைகிறார். கடன் கொடுத்தவர், ‘பணத்தைக் கொடு, இல்லை என்றால் தங்கை யை திருமணம் செய்து கொடு’ என்று கேட்கிறார். இதனால் பணம் சம்பாதிக்க, நண்பன் கல்யாணை (யோகிபாபு) தேடி, சென்னை வருகிறார் ஸ்ரீதர். கல்யாண், ஹைடெக் திருட்டு வேலை பார்ப்பது தெரியவருகிறது. வேறு வழியில்லாமல் அவருடன் சேர்கிறார். இவர்கள் ஒரு மெகா திருட்டை செய்தால், ரூ.50 லட்சம் கிடைக்கும் என்ற ஆஃபர் வருகிறது. சரி என்கிறார்கள். அவர்கள் திருடப்போகும் இடம் விஞ்ஞானியின் (பாண்டியராஜன்) லேப். அங்கு நடக்கும் குளறுபடியால், கல்யாணுக்கு ஊசி ஒன்று குத்திவிடுகிறது. விளைவு, ஆணாக இருந்த கல்யாண், மறுநாள் கல்யாணி (ஹன்சிகா) ஆகிவிடுகிறார். இதனால் ஏற்படும் களேபரங்களும் அவர் மீண்டும் கல்யாணாக மாறினாரா இல்லையா என்பதும்தான் படம்.

சுவாரஸ்யமான இந்த ஒன் லைனை வைத்துக்கொண்டு காமெடி படம் தர முயற்சி செய்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் மனோஜ் தாமோதரன். அதற்கான சாத்தியக் கூறுகள் அதிகம் இருந்தாலும், அதில் பாதிதான் வெற்றி பெற்றிருக்கிறார். ஆண், பெண்ணாக மாறுவதுதான் கதையின் மையம். ஆனால், இந்த விஷயமே இடைவேளைக்கு முன் தான் நடக்கிறது. அதுவரை நடக்கும் கதைகளில், எண்ணி சில இடங்களில் மட்டும் சிரித்துவிட்டு, அப்புறம்? என்று உட்கார்ந்திருக்க வேண்டியிருக்கிறது. பின் பகுதி கதையில் கிளைமாக்ஸுக்கு முந்தைய காட்சிகளில் மட்டும், காமெடி நன்றாகக் கைகொடுத்திருக்கிறது.

ஆதி, வழக்கம்போல சிறப்பான நடிப்பை வழங்கியிருக்கிறார், காதலி பாலக் லால்வாணி மற்றும் ஹன்சிகாவிடம் மாட்டிக்கொண்டு படுகிற தவிப்பு ரசிக்க வைக்கிறது. அவர் கதாபாத்திரம் வலுவானதாக இல்லாததால், அதற்கு மேல் அவராலும் என்ன செய்ய முடியும்? யோகிபாபுவின் காமெடி சில இடங்களில் மட்டுமே சிரிக்க முடிகிறது.

ஹன்சிகாதான் மொத்தப் படத்துக்கும் ஆறுதல். பெண் தோற்றத்தில் ஆணாக அவர் படும் ரகளையை ரசிக்கலாம். அவர் உடல் மொழியும் நடிப்பும் ரசனை. நாயகி பாலக் லால்வாணிக்கு அதிக வாய்ப்பில்லை.

ரோபோ சங்கர், தங்கதுரை, அகஸ்டின் ஆகியோரின் உருவக் கேலி மற்றும் இரட்டை அர்த்த வசனங்கள் சிரிப்புக்குப் பதில் எரிச்சலையே தருகின்றன. அமைச்சர் ரவிமரியா, விஞ்ஞானி பாண்டியராஜன், யோகி பாபுவின் காதலி 'மைனா' நந்தினி,திருட்டு கம்பெனி ஹெச்.ஆர். முனிஷ்காந்த், ஜான்விஜய் என அனைவரையும் காமெடிக்கு பயன்படுத்தி இருக்கிறார்கள்.

சந்தோஷ் தயாநிதியின் பின்னணி இசையும் ஷபீர் அகமதுவின் ஒளிப்பதிவும் படத்துக்கு ஓரளவு உதவி இருக்கின்றன. காமெடிக்கு லாஜிக் எதற்கு என்று நினைத்தவர்கள், திரைக்கதையை இன்னும் நகைச்சுவையாக எழுதியிருந்தால், நாமும் இந்தப் படத்தின் ‘பாட்னர்’ ஆகியிருக்கலாம்.

Debutant director Manoj Damodharan’s Partner is a timepass comedy that does not offer great strokes or story, but a handful of laughs do come along.

The film is about two friends who join a company who specialize in different forms of theft, and while attempting to steal different things, they come across a scientist who is forming a machine that entirely changes the visual look of the person. When Yogi Babu mistakenly sits on the machine, he transforms into a young woman (Hansika). The rest of the story is based on the comedy that takes place between the characters.

Partner does not offer much in terms of its plot progression in the first half, as there is hardly anything to laugh at here. It is only after the Hansika – Yogi Babu transformation that the film turns funnier, as there are a lot of comic sequences in the second that bring about laughter. The film is decent in terms of being an entertainer, at best.

Aadhi has done a Tamil film after a long time, and he has abided by the rules of a comic entertainer well and has performed well. Yogi Babu is not in the form we have seen in recent times, and the film lights up well when he transforms into Hansika in the second half.

The visuals are adequate, and the music by Santhosh Dhayanidhi does not hamper the proceedings. The short runtime of the film also helps.

On the whole, Partner is a decent entertainer that you can watch without complaining if you are looking for a timepass film.  Partner Tamil Movie Review by Team Only Kollywood

However, the twist in the tale comes when Sridhar and Kalyan find themselves caught in a perilous mission. They are tasked with assisting a notorious criminal in stealing a highly coveted chip from a scientist. This mission plunges them into a world of chaos and unexpected events.

The narrative takes a delightful twist when an experiment at the scientist’s lab leads to an astonishing transformation. Kalyan, portrayed by Hansika Motwani, undergoes a sudden and inexplicable gender transformation, becoming an adorable girl. This transformation sets the stage for a series of comedic sequences that drive the plot forward.

Amidst the laughter and mayhem, a central question lingers: Can Sridhar overcome his financial woes and secure the funds he desperately needs? Furthermore, can they track down the scientist and reverse Kalyan’s unforeseen transformation? The concept of a sudden gender change experienced by one of the lead characters adds an intriguing layer to the story, offering opportunities for rib-tickling moments amid the ensuing chaos.

However, the director, Manoj Damodaran, falls short in weaving captivating instances that could fully immerse the audience in the envisioned world. Despite its potential for chaos and comedy, the impact of “Partner” often falls flat. While humor wanes in the pre-interval sequences, decent performances by the lead actors and the sequences leading up to the climax salvage the film to some extent.

The film’s dialogue writing is a significant letdown. Apart from the protagonist, the supporting actors frequently deliver double entendres that demean the opposite sex. The recurring commentary on contemporary women, approximately every 10 minutes, becomes tiresome. Additionally, it takes an entire hour for the director to introduce a significant conflict into the plot. Even the subsequent sequences struggle to effectively establish a deep connection among the central characters.

Aadhi Pinisetty and Hansika Motwani both deliver performances in line with their respective roles’ requirements. Aadhi’s portrayal of Sridhar, the desperate friend entangled in this chaotic mission, is competent. He manages to maintain the audience’s engagement even when the humor falters. On the other hand, Hansika brings charm and innocence to her role as the transformed Kalyan. Her expressions and comic timing add a touch of authenticity to her character.

In terms of technical aspects, the film is passable, though it contributes minimally to elevating the script. The cinematography, music, and editing are functional but do not stand out as exceptional. The visual effects used to depict the gender transformation are adequate but lack the finesse seen in high-budget productions.

Aadhi, as Sridhar, effectively portrays the desperation and confusion of his character, while Hansika adds charm and humor to her role as the transformed Kalyan.

Additionally, the film’s sequences leading up to the climax provide a much-needed boost to the narrative. These moments inject a sense of urgency and intrigue into the story, helping to maintain the audience’s interest.

In terms of technical aspects, “Partner” is serviceable but unremarkable. The cinematography, music, and editing do their job without adding any standout elements to the film. 'Tamilrockerz' review: A great opportunity frittered

Over the past decade, the infamous piracy group, Tamilrockers, has been a subject of much discussion. Pirated versions of films weren’t just being made available on the date of release; sometimes, they were available even ahead of release. The piracy group continues to be active and has been a big problem for the film fraternity for nearly a decade now. The arrival of OTT platforms helped somewhat, and it’s interesting that it’s on one such streaming platforms that a web series based on the group is out now.

Undoubtedly, SonyLIV’s Tamilrockerz has an exciting idea that screams potential. We see glimpses of the group leader, the modus operandi... But sadly, director Arivazhagan doesn’t give us enough for an eight-episode series. First things first—this SonyLIV series is heavily fictionalised, and it all begins when a superstar’s highly ambitious film gears up for release a week later. The notorious piracy group launches an open threat that it would have the film released on its site a day ahead of its release. It’s all then about how cops and cyber-forensic experts try to prevent this from happening.

At a time when gripping documentaries and shows on true crimes are the order of the day, Tamilrockerz needed to be tight and gripping. However, what we get is a bland series that subscribes to a predictable template. There’s a grieving hero, his dead wife (read first heroine), his smart new colleague (read second heroine), a villain gang, guns, bombs, human trafficking... Wait, wasn’t this supposed to be about pirated films?

Arun Vijay’s ACP Rudra is a brooding cop who resorts to extra-judicial killings as he sulks over his wife’s death. Thanks to long-format storytelling, there’s no heroic entry or intro song here. Also, this format allows for the exploration of multiple tracks that are interconnected. And yet, the makers don’t seem to make the best use of the format. The first few episodes portray flashes of Rudra’s memories haunting him. More than establishing his character, it serves to distract and hamper the pace. We then get a caricaturish portrayal of a young superstar and his overbearing dad—which seems like Arivazhagan’s criticism of nepotism. The superstar remains faceless, and this doesn’t exactly make things better.

To show the far-reaching effects of piracy, we see a production driver (Marimuthu) being affected. We see a failed producer who has become mentally unstable (MS Bhaskar)—a character who inspires Rudra to do more about the case. These seem interesting plot points, but it’s all bogged down by convenient writing and an overdose of cinematic liberties. Take, for instance, the scene that shows cops getting hold of an old photograph featuring the OG Tamilrockers group. We don’t get the ‘how’ of this event, and we don’t understand why.

The most disappointing aspect of the series is the portrayal of the Tamilrockers group. In real life, they possess a certain Robinhood-like image among the public. Here, they get shown as yet another criminal gang. They work in dingy spaces and are supposedly part of a bigger nexus that’s into terrorism and human trafficking. There is also a rather typical backstory to show the birth of Tamilrockers, one that reduces such an interesting idea to a mere case of personal vengeance.

The investigating officer is new to cyber crimes, and so, along with him, we too get taught the basics of cyber operations, including dull explanations about URLs, domains, and how websites get pulled down. A thriller like this ought to be a cat-and-mouse game, but this series simply lacks intensity despite the central race-against-time idea. There’s no great exploration of technology either—we get the same old GPS tracking, bug usage, USB hacking…

The show ends with a cliffhanger that hints at a second season, but you can predict the end reveal and twist from a long distance. For me,the slow-motion reveal didn’t inspire thrill; I felt relief that it was all finally over. There’s a dialogue that’s often used in this show: “Cinema-la logic paakadheenga... magic paarunga.” I’m not sure Tamilrockerz has much of either.

The name Tamilrockers means only one thing among film fans. The notorious piracy site is known for leaking films in just a matter of a few hours after their release. Sometimes, a film is leaked even before its release. A few years ago, the Producers' Council went up in arms against them and tried their best to put an end to the site, which affects the theatrical avenue of films. Sadly, the Tamilrockers are still there, doing what they have been doing for years.

Director Arivazhagan's series, Tamilrockerz, is a semi-fictional tale about the piracy site. The show starts with the 4 am FDFS (first-day first show) celebrations outside a theatre. Shockingly, the film of a popular star gets leaked even before the first show could end. The producer of the film commits suicide. Days after this incident, the site announces that they will leak 'Adhiradi Star' Adithya's Garuda (which is made on a Rs 300 crore budget) a day before its official release.

Later, ACP Rudra (Arun Vijay) is appointed to nab the team behind Tamilrockerz. He, along with cyber forensic officer Sandha (Vani Bhojan), cybercrime SI Bhanu (Vinodhini Vaidyanathan), and inspector Nelson (Vinod Sagar) try to crack the case before they leak Garuda.

On paper, Tamilrockerz has an interesting script which could be a great whodunnit thriller. However, the screenplay suffers from predictable writing. The technicalities of the piracy site, their contacts with people working in theatres and their income source, along with police hunting for them, could have made for a good watch. But, the series barely scratches the surface.

Director Arivazhagan has stacked one piece of information after another which is already in the public domain. You don't feel for the characters even when a tragic incident occurs. This is mainly because of the 'Deja Vu' feeling you get while watching the film. Almost every conflict introduced in the film is resolved quickly, making it more convenient for the hero.

However, a terrific scene featuring MS Bhaskar explaining the plight of a producer makes us feel for him. But, it is not organic and appears with an agenda to make the audience empathise with the producers. Every subplot is somehow related to cinema. Rudra's wife (Ishwarya Menen) is a cinema paithyam (ardent film fan), while Sandhya's father (MS Bhaskar) is a producer.

Arun Vijay as a grieving husband is perfect in his role. In fact, his performance makes us sit through this overly stretched plot. Vani Bhojan, to an extent, delivered a convincing performance. Vinodhini and Vinod Sagar were adequate in their respective roles.

Tamilrockerz is a wasted opportunity. The irony is that even the series isn't spared from the Tamilrockers, the piracy site.

Tamilrockerz Web Series Review: A great opportunity frittered

Over the past decade, the infamous piracy group, Tamilrockers, has been a subject of much discussion. Pirated versions of films weren’t just being made available on the date of release; sometimes, they were available even ahead of release. The piracy group continues to be active and has been a big problem for the film fraternity for nearly a decade now. The arrival of OTT platforms helped somewhat, and it’s interesting that it’s on one such streaming platforms that a web series based on the group is out now. Undoubtedly, SonyLIV's Tamilrockerz has an exciting idea that screams potential. We see glimpses of the group leader, the modus operandi... But sadly, director Arivazhagan doesn’t give us enough for an eight-episode series.

First things first—this SonyLIV series is heavily fictionalised, and it all begins when a superstar's highly ambitious film gears up for release a week later. The notorious piracy group launches an open threat that it would have the film released on its site a day ahead of its release. It’s all then about how cops and cyber-forensic experts try to prevent this from happening.

At a time when gripping documentaries and shows on true crimes are the order of the day,  Tamilrockerz  needed to be tight and gripping. However, what we get is a bland series that subscribes to a predictable template. There’s a grieving hero, his dead wife (read first heroine), his smart new colleague (read second heroine), a villain gang, guns, bombs, human trafficking... Wait, wasn't this supposed to be about pirated films?

Arun Vijay's ACP Rudra is a brooding cop who resorts to extra-judicial killings as he sulks over his wife's death. Thanks to long-format storytelling, there's no heroic entry or intro song here. Also, this format allows for the exploration of multiple tracks that are interconnected. And yet, the makers don't seem to make the best use of the format. The first few episodes portray flashes of Rudra’s memories haunting him. More than establishing his character, it serves to distract and hamper the pace. We then get a caricaturish portrayal of a young superstar and his overbearing dad—which seems like Arivazhagan's criticism of nepotism. The superstar remains faceless, and this doesn’t exactly make things better.

To show the far-reaching effects of piracy, we see a production driver (Marimuthu) being affected. We see a failed producer who has become mentally unstable (MS Bhaskar)—a character who inspires Rudra to do more about the case. These seem interesting plot points, but it’s all bogged down by convenient writing and an overdose of cinematic liberties.
