The University in its External Contexts The notion of higher education being an Ivory Tower, separate from the world, is nostalgia if not outright myth. Universities are very much shaped by the contexts in which they operate. They need to be responsive to political, economic, and social trends. What happens outside universities impacts what happens inside of them. This course seeks to understand how universities must operate in and leaders must shape the political context; the role regulation and politics play; and how university leaders must ensure quality and relevance:

  • Influencing Higher Education Policy
  • Quality Assurance and Accreditation
  • Rankings and their Effects

The Challenges of Leading Universities never have a slow day. There are constant demands on leaders’ time, talent, and skills. To be effective leaders must have the skills to use data to understand their problems and opportunities, the capacity to lead in times of crises, and leverage the skills and talents of individuals collectively to advance the university and its priorities. Leadership is a collective pursuit, one that requires intentionality and agility, and is shaped by context and circumstance:

  • Using Data to Understand Problems
  • Leading in and Through Crises
  • Leading Teams

Designing the Future University leaders need to think about and prepare for the future. Universities risk becoming stagnant and outdated if they do not continually innovate. This course focuses on the principles of design thinking, how leaders can engage campus communities to design and bring about a desired future. It will explore new models of universities and how universities, even long-established ones, can become the disruptors:

  • Design Thinking and Innovation Methods for Higher Education Leaders
  • New Models of University
  • Leading with Data to Support Expansive Learning

The Business of the Academic Business Universities are not businesses (far from it with their social missions, academic core, and public policy ties), but they do have business functions. This module explores three areas related to the business functions of higher education. Their entrepreneurial activities, the ways they project (intentionally or not) their brand identities into the broader world, and how they engage alumni as active contributors to the university, and well beyond their simple donor role. University leaders need to understand the ways their universities can create and sustain entrepreneurial cultures to secure needed resources and leverage resources and assets to positively impact the university:

  • The Entrepreneurial University
  • Alumni as an Institutional Asset
  • Marketing, Branding and the External Image

Capstone Action Lab: Problems/Opportunities of Practice This program is based on the premise that it will help develop knowledgeable, skills leaders to effect change in their higher education contexts. To that end, this capstone course will allow students to frame a problem of practice through an Action Lab, which is a highly engaging, problem-based, and solution-orientated, course. By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define and contextualize a complex problem/opportunity to solve in higher education.
  • Understand the depth and contours of that problem.
  • Synthesize and apply relevant insights from modules delivered in this program and a problem-understanding literature review.
  • Outline a change management approach to advance progress on your problem of practice.
  • Deliver a persuasive presentation to stakeholders about your problem of practice.

Degree Title

Master of Science

August 2024.

A Master of Science in Higher Education Administration prepares graduates to serve in a variety of roles at colleges, universities, and related institutions. The academic program, offered by the College of Arts, Sciences and Education runs in partnership with FIU's Student Affairs division, and integrates classwork with assistantships for a total learning experience. Students in the program are taught and advised by full-time professors and senior higher education professionals. As a majority-minority institution, FIU is the prototype for universities of the 21st century. Students in the program will have the opportunity to work and study in one of the most diverse higher education environments in the nation. Postsecondary education administrators oversee student services, academics, and faculty research at colleges and universities. Their job duties vary depending on the area of the college they manage, such as admissions, student affairs, or the registrar’s office.

In today’s global market and economy, education is a necessity for economic opportunity, mobility, and specialized skills. A college education is an investment in the future and is no longer a luxury for just a selected few. Studies show that graduates with a master’s degree earn more and as of 2020, the Department of Education estimates that two-thirds of job openings will require postsecondary education or training. Understanding these facts, a career in higher education is a good choice because of the steady growth and stability of the field.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of postsecondary education administrators is projected to grow by 10 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. Growth is expected because of increasing student enrollment in colleges and universities. In addition, people will continue to seek postsecondary education to accomplish their career goals. As more people enter colleges and universities, more postsecondary education administrators will be needed to serve the needs of these students.

Graduates will be prepared for employment within higher education institutions in the following capacities:

  • Academic Advisor
  • Career Counselor
  • Admissions Officer
  • Enrollment Manager
  • Academic Coordinator or Academic Support Specialist
  • Financial Aid Counselor or Administrator
  • Assistant/Associate Dean of Students
  • Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator

Of note, there is a possibility of employment at FIU after graduation, and graduates also explore national opportunities for employment at other institutions.

1 Review Admission Requirements

The student affairs in higher education master's degree requires that applicants have the following:

  • A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • A 3.0 GPA on all undergraduate coursework
  • GRE scores are not required

While not required, undergraduate activities in student affairs or other leadership experiences are important to the application. Volunteer work after a bachelor's degree is earned is also helpful. Meeting the minimum department standards does not ensure admission to the program. Admission to Colorado State University graduate programs is based on a number of factors, including prior academic experience and completion of an admissions interview.

2 Prepare Application Materials

Prepare the materials below and upload when you apply online.

The mission of the Master of Science in Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE) is to prepare well-rounded, competent, and inclusive student affairs practitioners. Our students effectively engage in critical analysis through reflection and action (praxis) to demonstrate transformative learning grounded in an ethic of love. A central component of the SAHE program is engaging in intentional, reflective practice as a foundational skill necessary to be an effective professional in student affairs. This is both a process and an outcome such that reflection-on-action happens in the program to produce practitioner-scholars who can effectively reflect-in-action as a foundational skill. Colorado State University’s Principles of Community also guide us.

Through engaging in such reflective practice, as well as receiving formal and informal feedback, students who participate fully in the learning experience offered through the SAHE program will develop knowledge, skills, and dispositions applicable to their professional practice.

The Statement of Purpose is intended to be a personal and professional statement that demonstrates your alignment with the SAHE program’s mission, values, and intended outcomes, as well as your readiness to engage SAHE’s curriculum.

Keeping all this in mind, please write your statement responding to the prompts below. Your statement must not exceed 1000 words (approximately four pages) and should be written in 12-point font and double-spaced.

  • What do you understand to be the work of student affairs, within the college/university as well as the education of students, and why does that speak to you as a professional goal?
  • Describe what steps of reflection guide you personally and/or professionally as you engage others.
  • Please discuss a situation that highlights your strengths and challenges when working with others (e.g., academic group project, work experience, athletic team, service project, etc.).
  • How do your GPA and undergraduate program of study reflect your ability to learn, reflect, and academically succeed in a graduate program?
  • Why do you believe CSU and the SAHE program would be the most appropriate space for you to achieve your professional goals in student affairs?

Include any previous experience in student affairs and other relevant work experiences, along with position titles, dates of employment, institutions, and major responsibilities.

  • We recommend selecting two references that are a current or former supervisor, a faculty member, and a student affairs professional.
