Character.org Announces Results of 2023 Laws of Life Essay Contest For Students
Jun 7, 2023
Washington, D.C. (May 24, 2023) – Character.org is pleased to announce the results of its 2023 Laws of Life essay contest. The Laws of Life essay contest encourages elementary, middle school and high school students to reflect and write about a core value that means the most to them – and why. It provides students the opportunity to write from the heart to explain their thinking to others.
This is the second year Character.org has managed this contest, having expanded the contest previously run by the Connecticut-based School for Ethical Education, whose grant to Character.org makes the Laws of Life program possible. The School for Ethical Education managed the contest in Connecticut for several years. The original Laws of Life contest began in 1997 under the management of the John Templeton Foundation.
Students from the United States and nine other countries in grades 4 – 12 participated during the 2022-2023 school year, submitting a total of 1,139 essays from 98 schools. Pennsylvania and New Jersey students submitted the majority of the U.S. essays, with 63 U.S. schools participating in the 2023 contest. Romania and Brazil accounted for 70% of the essays submitted from outside the United States, from a total of 35 schools.
All student participants will receive recognition from Character.org. Six students are being honored for writing essays which were evaluated by a team of judges and deemed “Most Compelling” Worldwide, based upon content, structure, grammar and spelling. An additional twenty students, ten each from the United States and countries outside the U.S., are being recognized for writing exemplary essays in the high school and elementary/middle school age groups. Additionally, Character.org is recognizing the work of one student from each school that participated. (A list of these honorees is attached.)
More information about the Laws of Life essay contest and this year’s student honorees is available at Character.org’s website at https://character.org/laws-of-life-contest/ . Character.org is a worldwide network that empowers people of all ages to practice and model the core values that shape our hearts, minds, and choices. Since 1993, we have created and shared character-inspired resources for families, schools, and organizations across the world. Every year we also recognize and celebrate thousands of people who are champions for character.

Consistency
It’s easy to post a list of core values on the refrigerator. It’s much more difficult for parents to be consistent. Consistency lets children know what to expect and what is expected of them. Of course, children will push boundaries but inconsistency from parents confuses children.
Everyone involved in your child’s development are critical to modeling and upholding core values. Parents need to work with these important role models to foster the importance of doing the right thing, at the right time, in the right way, and for the right reasons.
Parents need to commit to model and reinforce to their children the core values and character strengths that mean the most to them. They also need to be creative and offer meaningful experiences that illuminate how important these character strengths are to the family’s core values.
Conversations
We know “We need to talk” freaks kids out, but too often parents avoid having conversations about character, especially as children get older. While it may not be easy to talk sometimes, we know from the research that parents who avoid talking to their children about serious matters quickly lose trust and connection.
Celebration
Parents need to find ways for their children to be active participants in their own character growth. Optimal character development occurs when children begin to make self-motivated commitments to consistently practice a core value (e.g. “I want to be the kind of person who is always honest and shows up on time.”) Parents need to celebrate these moments to shape and define individual character.

KADEN MOSS-MOULTRIE PENS OVERALL WINNING LAWS OF LIFE ESSAY
NASSAU, Bahamas, June 26, 2023 — Aquinas College’s Kaiden Moss-Moultrie was the top scorer in the senior division and overall winner of the 15th Laws of Life Essay Competition. She walked away with a $1,000 scholarship and a prize that was matched equally for her school, The Nassau Guardian reported in an article written by Lifestyles Editor Shavaughn Moss,
University of The Bahamas’ Chanae Barr, C.H. Reeves’ Kevin Williams, Temple Christian School’s Dwayne Small, and Tambearly International School’s Terranique Burrows were winners in their respective categories.
They each also received a $1,000 scholarship as well as a prize of equal value for their respective schools. The coveted top awards for all the divisions were presented to 88 students from public and private schools, as well as local tertiary institutions.
Through essays and videos, participants demonstrated their understanding and application of the Laws of Life.
All participants selected one of the suggested Laws of Life for their division, explained its meaning, and offered personal insights, experiences and real-world examples of the law being applied. Some of the laws selected by the students were: “Help yourself by helping others”, “Those who do good do well”, “Success feeds on itself and creates more success”, and “Make yourself necessary to the world and mankind will give you bread”.
With The Bahamas celebrating its 50th anniversary of independence, the topics selected for this year’s competition focused on the words vision, progress, positivity, love, wisdom, learning, and success.
Participants applied their writing and video production skills to convey their ideas on how progress is fueled by diligence and perseverance.
Dr. Andrew Serazin, president of Templeton World Charity Foundation, congratulated the students on their participation in what he called the “super bowl” event of the foundation. He spoke to the purpose of the competition and its impact on students and our community.
“The [Laws of Life] can help us respond to a Facebook post, or a WhatsApp chat, a TikTok or even something like ChatGPT. But here in the real world, more importantly, you can use the Laws of Life to help a friend in need, or make a difficult decision in your life, or plan your own future. This year, the Laws of Life topics for all the individual divisions touched on aspects of how we can improve ourselves, and one common thread was that many essays included moving passages about the Bahamian journey to independence. These essays illustrate the vision of Sir John Templeton and the Templeton World Charity Foundation, not just to get by, but to flourish, as illustrated profoundly in the motto of the country, ‘Forward, Upward, Onward, Together’,” said Serazin at the award ceremony held on Thursday, June 8 at the Baha Mar Convention Center.
A joint venture initiative between Templeton World Charity Foundation and the Ministry of Education and Technical and Vocational Training, the Laws of Life Essay and Video Competition aims to encourage students, through their writing and video production, to reflect upon and articulate how the Laws of Life shape their lives, guide their decisions, and engender personal growth and positive contributions to society.
The 2023 competition was launched in November 2022, closing this year in early May. With approximately 1,700 entries obtained from students in grades five through 12, as well as students enrolled in local tertiary institutions, the markers and judges, officials say, faced the difficult task of selecting the winners from among an array of exceptional entries.

Thomas County Central High School has announced its winners and honorable mentions in the school’s portion of the annual Georgia Laws of Life Essay Contest.
Ninth grade winner is Cynthia Ramos. Honorable mentions are Alyssa Godwin, Ashlyn ?Weeks, and Mitchell ?Mercer.
“It’s an honor to win such an important and valuable contest,” Ramos said. “I’m happy to know that my story can teach an important law of life.”
Tenth grade winner is Kyle Clark. Honorable mentions are Ashlan Layton and Lynlee Madison Johnson.
Clark wrote about the passing of his great-grandfather and “how keeping someone in your mind keeps them around in some way.”
“His passing really did have ripple effects throughout the family, and I thought that writing on it would not only help my family, but also share a message,” he said.
Eleventh grade winner is Lauren Pearson. Honorable mentions are Christina Maggitas, Chandler Watson, and Marc Rountree.
Pearson also was the overall TCCHS winner.
“It feels amazing,” she said. “I feel very honored, and this means a lot to me to be able to share my story.”
Twelfth grade winner is Ava Glover. Honorable mention is Chelcie Nix.
Glover said it is important for students to learn good writing and grammar skills because “they are highly desirable to potential employers.”
“Being able to write can be the difference between staying stagnant and climbing the corporate ladder,” she said.
TCCHS English teacher Laura Parkerson has Glover and Ramos as students. She is “extremely proud” of her students and said they “are a blessing to have in the classroom.”
“Ava Glover is such an awesome young lady with so many talents,” Parkerson said. “I had the opportunity to teach her both ninth and twelfth grade English and to watch her grow has been such a sweet journey. Cynthia Ramos is aspiring to be something awesome. She works so hard to achieve greatness and I expect nothing less than the best for her future.”
The competition, sponsored by the Georgia Rotary Clubs, is for grades ninth through twelfth. The essay assignment incorporates Core Curriculum Standards and state-mandated character education requirements.
Each essay has to contain a “law of life” as a maxim, saying, or quote, according to the contest manual. An example is, “Slow and steady wins the race.” Essays had to be 500-700 words of original writing based on the student’s own experience and observations. Essays are primarily judged on content and how effectively the writer applied the selected law.
TCCHS English teachers selected the best essays from their classes, and then a panel of teachers picked the top 12 from each grade to send to state competition.
“I am always proud of students who are willing to take life experiences and observations and turn them into a learning experience,” TCCHS English teacher Sharon Davis, the school’s contest chair, said. “These lessons are ones that will be with them for a lifetime.”
TCCHS generated 915 essays and met the requirements to receive cash awards for winners. The school winner will receive $100 and each grade winner will receive $50.
School winners are sent on to the state portion of the Georgia Laws of Life Essay Contest. State winners should be announced in April.
