'Kabzaa' movie review: An ambitious and violent crime drama

Kabzaa. (File Photo)

During the promotions, director R Chandru admitted that the KGF franchise inspired him to create the world of Kabzaa. But Kabzaa has its own personality, impressive grandeur, solid star cast, massive sets, whistle-worthy dialogues, over-the-top violence, and of course... Upendra.

The film is about the rise of the underworld and traces the life of Arakeshwara (Upendra). Narrated by encounter specialist Bhargav Bhakshi (Sudeep), the narrative has a never-ending barrage of characters, especially various dons, making fleeting appearances in and out of the film.

Set between the 40s and the 80s, we are introduced to Arakeshwara, who is born into a family of freedom fighters. Along with his parents and an elder brother, Sankeshwara (Sunil Puranik), the family is into weaving flags. Arakeshwara aspires to become a pilot and gets all the support from his elder brother.

However, his dreams are cut short when his brother is murdered.  The otherwise mild Arakeshwara turns violent, and marks his accidental entry into the underworld. Will he succeed in ruling the roost for a long time or meet a worthy challenger in Bhargav Bakshi makes up for the first part, and Shivarajkumar’s cameo in this instalment only sets up a potential showdown between these three superstars in Kabzaa 2.  The actual story of Kabzaa is established in the second half and is peppered with high-octane action sequences featuring swords, guns, and a lot of bloodshed. Points to stunt directors Ravi Varma, Vijay, Chethan D’ Souze, Vinod, Vikram Mor, and Thriller Manju for delivering the adrenaline rush.

Apart from the violence, Arakeshwara also has a romantic angle, involving Madhumathi (Shriya Saran), the Queen of the Bahaddhur family, who gets married against the wishes of her father. What price she pays for marrying a gangster is brought through various events, giving room for many more characters to be introduced in the sequel.  There is a lot of drama, romance, and action, and can a film ever be complete without doses of mother sentiment?

Kabzaa is purely Chandru’s vision and he mounts it through the superstardom of the three stars. But undoubtedly, the film belongs to its technical crew who deliver a solid spectacle. Art director Shivakumar masterfully crafts the massive sets to bring alive Chandru’s vision for Kabzaa. Ravi Basrur continues to carry his signature style and balances the mass appeal of the film’s star cast, and the music required for commercial potboilers. While the background music might seem too loud, it justifies the film’s rather dark narrative. AJ Shetty, who has previously assisted Bhuvan Gowda in KGF, has utilised his learnings from that film in Kabzaa. Another KGF alumni, editor Mahesh Reddy employs a similar pattern but manages to dish out a distinct style too. However, the VFX leaves a lot to be desired.

‘If you want to win. I will play the game. If you want to kill, I will end the game,’ says Upendra in one of the high points of the film. Kabzaa allows the actor to showcase his super-heroic side, and he stands tall. He fits well into the role of Arakeshwara, and nails his transformation from a normal person to a dreaded don. Shriya is regal as the Queen, and is a perfect fit for the role.  Sudeep’s narration adds value to the film and helps us traverse through the various timelines and characters. His appearance as a strict police officer will cheer his fans. Shivarajkumar’s entry makes you look forward to the sequel.

With countless characters seen in various face-offs with Upendra, Danish Akhtar Sait in the role of Baali,  Nawab Shah as Bangera, Kamarajan as Khalid, and John Kokken as Malik, make their presence felt. There is Anup Revanna as Target Fayas and Murali Sharma who give a decent performance. The film also features Ashwath Ninasam and Suresh in blink-and-miss roles. In fact, innumerable characters in the film only end up being forgettable.

Kabzaa’s story does not follow KGF but it does have similar themes like the underdog becoming an underworld don. It is definitely a film for all those who enjoy action drama, superior technical quality, and of course, the high of watching three of Sandalwood’s biggest superstars coming together on the big screen.

Kabzaa Movie Review: Upendra, Sudeep star in KGF-lite film which questions your sensibility

R chandru’s kabzaa is a film that loves bullets, guns and beheaded men. starring upendra, kichcha sudeep and shriya saran, the film is an unimpressive gangster drama that is a danger to your eardrums, says our review..

Listen to Story

Upendra and Kichcha Sudeep's Kabzaa hit theatres on March 17.

  • Kabzaa features Upendra, Shriya Saran and Kichcha Sudeep.
  • The film is directed by R Chandru.
  • The film graced the screens on March 17.

Release Date: 17 Mar, 2023

Post Yash’s KGF’s resounding success, gangster dramas have become a repeated genre for filmmakers. And R Chandru’s Kabzaa doesn’t shy away from adapting KGF’s aesthetics. To an extent, it also adapts KGF’s story. And throughout, you get a Deja Vu feeling while watching Upendra beheading men, killing one villain after another.

Arkeshwaran is an Indian Air Force pilot and saint-like. He doesn’t even have the guts to confess his love for king Veer Bahadur’s daughter Madhumathi (Shriya Saran) to his mother. One day, his brother Sankeswaran dies a tragic death and gets beheaded. It’s an end to Arkeswaran AKA Arka's good days. His life takes a turn and he grows into a deadly mafia head.

Chandru’s film takes itself very seriously. It masquerades as a film that is high on content, but, in retrospect, it has a wafer-thin storyline. Instead, the voice-over tells you what we already know. The film is an example of how a voice-over shouldn’t be used if it cannot elevate an already drowning story. Kabzaa is a film that talks about the rise of a common man in the most violent way possible.

All Arkeshwara gets is targets to kill every 20 minutes. We are introduced to many villains at frequent intervals and Arka kills them in a jiffy. Either he walks around with the heads of the beheaded men or with pistols in his hand. Every single conflict gets resolved in a few minutes and, because of this, we are hardly invested in the story. We also see Arka trying to make our hearts melt with his romance with Madhumathi. But, you end up staring at the screen with zero expression on your face. Be it action or romance, nothing actually excites you.

Kabzaa suffers from predictability. It takes a formulaic route and the characterisation of the caricaturish villains does not add up to the story. On top of that, one of the villains played by Nawab Shah has a tattoo that reads ‘cruel.’ Wondering what it means? It’s a cue for you to be afraid of him.

The less said about the performances by Upendra, Sudeep and Shriya Saran, the better. There is no redeemable quality about Kabzaa except the ‘surprise’ in the climax, which gives a lead to the sequel. The sequence is tastefully done despite being quite predictable.

Ravi Basrur, who made heads turn with his captivating music in KGF, will make you go deaf with Kabzaa. In a scene, Upendra’s Arka says, ‘I am allergic to noise. I prefer silence.’ Upendra, we feel you!

Kabzaa could have been another KGF for the Kannada film industry. But, it ends up being a laughing stock.

1.5 stars out of 5 stars for Kabzaa. Published By: Anindita Mukhopadhyay Published On: Mar 17, 2023 --- ENDS --- ALSO READ | Kichcha Sudeep and Upendra give strong KGF vibes in Kabzaa teaser

What’s Good: The production design and lighting departments are the only two who took their assignments a bit seriously.

What’s Bad: Rest everyone decided to copy from other’s sheet, and one has to see the sheer audacity of a team of people hell-bent on wasting a lot of money. There’s even a part two.

Loo Break: Whenever someone decides to smear someone’s head, we should all take mental breaks. Loo will serve as a meditation centre in this case.

Watch or Not?: If you have nothing else left to see, you might still want to watch that beautiful tree from your window. Also, I honestly want your eardrums to be safe.

Language: Kannada.

Available on: Theatres Near You.

Runtime: 136 Minutes.

I will try. Decades after independence, two sons of a dead king who eloped with their mother are in hiding in the South of India. When they grow up, one of the two is murdered, and the other roams around seeking revenge, only to kill people and splash the watermelon juice out of them.

Kabzaa Movie Review: Script Analysis

You know, there are some films that test your patience to an extent where you just want all of it to end or at least the theatre to burn down, so the misery ends once and for all—precisely that. Kannada cinema, indeed has found itself in a very new light as we speak. KGF , Kantara, and 777 Charlie are shining examples. While not a fan of the Yash starrer, I agree it brings panache to the screen, which is why Rocky Bhai stands out and entertains. But it is a path carved for an entire industry, and the rest should march with a versatile product and not just end up rehashing what worked last.

Written by M Chandramouli and R. Chandru, Underworld Ka Kabzaa is literally a bunch of men gate-crashing a wonderful set every day and shooting narratives that will massage the ego of the evil inside them. Because nothing else explains the chaos and lack of story or structure to this movie that is, so hell-bent on celebrating toxicity all the time. It is just trying to multiply everything done in the last similar franchise with no nuance to it.

The attempt is to tell a story of a righteous and naive man going all evil and turning into a monster that the world dreads. To shape this we need to explore his world, his mind, and what he stood for. But instead, the film, with its zillion cuts and hammy editing focuses on how he fires bullets without even moving his fingers.

This world claims to be a very intense horrifying setup where you will be afraid of some character. But the writing never really allows that to happen because every single character is a spoof of every gangster you have ever seen in the Indian cinema. They are caricatures, one note, and if that is not helping you to drop your plan to watch this one, one of the villains played by Nawab Shah has ‘cruel’ tattooed on his face under his eye. Like it isn’t enough that he is dressed like a drag queen on a big ship under the burning sun, and he is just one of the villains; the rest are even more hilarious.

The movie doesn’t take anything seriously other than the never-ending weird moustaches of its multiple characters. That is not how you built gangsters, guys. The film tries to be clever when it builds an entire fictional town visually, and the production and VFX team even deliver. But nothing is era-appropriate. Everything is either too modern or too dated. Plus, if you build a jail with metal gates for security and show the police force securing it without knowing that their everyday enemy has a helicopter to fly in, you are making a joke out of yourself.

Also, whoever wrote the dialogues for the Hindi dub must be heavily fined for using Google translator. They are so verbose and so bad that half of them will make you laugh your guts out in the most serious situation. They use ‘Mahatvapurna’ and ‘Copy’ in the same line. What is this? Why are we watching it?

Kabzaa Movie Review: Star Performance

Every actor is told to mimic somebody, and you can see it. There is no attempt to build a unique gangster whose story we would want to trace. The common brief for men is that they will have to walk around slitting throats and cutting heads. And women, of which only two inconsequential exist in this universe are supposed to serve the fragile egos of the men around them.

Kichcha Sudeep, who has been used as the face for promotions, is literally a cameo. Upendra looks like he is forced to be here. All the villains are supposedly performing for their auditions in the Drag Race. Nothing else explains Nawab Shah’s obsession with his own cleavage.

Kabzaa Movie Review

Kabzaa Movie Review: Direction, Music

The direction, or the lack of it in Kabzaa is just unbearable. The visuals are unnecessarily gory and loud to an extent that you just want all of this to stop because it is too poorly done. Creating an edgy gangster drama is not just killing people as pass time and showing gallons of blood coming out of a slit throat. It is much more than that, and the directors need to know it.

Music is just too loud for anyone who has ears. The art, costume, and production department need to have a word with a therapist, though. Why is my glass of Rasna thicker than your blood? Who decided the characters’ looks, and did they think this was a circus-themed movie? Who supplied an extensive eye makeup to Shriya Saran in the desert where there is literally not even a sapling around her palace and no connect with the outer world at all? Why did you say yes to this job?

Also, whoever decided to black out the screen after every five minutes throughout the movie and multiple times during an action sequence on the edit table, please don’t ever even think of repeating that.

Kabzaa Movie Review: The Last Word

Kabzaa is a crash course on how not to make a gangster drama because everything about it is wrong.

Kabzaa Movie Review – Another KGF from Kannada Film Industry

Are you waiting for Kabzaa Movie Review before watching this much-awaited Kannada movie? Wait is over, now you can read the full review of the Kabzaa movie here.

After witnessing masterpieces such as KGF and Kantara, we already have higher expectations from the Kannada Film Industry, and they have once again delivered an outstanding cinema. Action, Thriller, Crime, and Drama – this movie has all aspects to become a potential blockbuster but failed to connect with the audience, and logic is missing in the whole movie. More than simply the style, flavor, and genre, Upendra’s gangster drama resembles “KGF”; it is a rip-off filled with vacuous replicas of everything that made Prashanth Neel’s movies entertaining.

Honest Review of Kabzaa Movie

Read the Kabzaa Movie Review (2023) before Going to Theaters:

Overall Rating – 8/10

Highlights – Cinematography, BGM

For whom – People who love action and gangster drama

What’s Unique – It’s the perfect blend of “Once Upon a Time in Mumbai” and “KGF” so if you love to watch gangster stories then this is the perfect treat for you. Definitely, you will love the picture-perfect frames and power-packed actions.

What’s the story – The pre-independence era drama Kabzaa centers on the life of Arkeshwara (Upendra), the wild son of a freedom warrior who later became a mafia don. He then proceeds to create a vast empire. The key themes of the film are what makes him such a powerful figure and why the patriotic father’s son ended up as an underworld don.

Full Review:

A Visual treat for KGF and Kichcha Sudeep fans. Kabzaa movie is the ultimate combination of gang-war, one-to-one actions, emotions, and thriller. A brilliant gangster story with a new-era concept and emotions that are enough to engage the audience till the last moment. One of the key factors that make it unique from other movies is its background music.

The storytelling and the narration were weak. Powerful action scenes and locations were perfect according to the movie’s theme. If you are a cinema lover who loves a huge cinematic set then Kabzaa movie is just made for you. Other people who do not like to see illogical fights and actions then please do not waste your money.

We should highly appreciate two factors in our Kabzaa movie review that are the BGM and cinematography of the Kabzaa movie 2023. Brilliant work by Upendra Rao, Kichcha Sudeep, Shreya Saran, and Shiva Rajkumar. The Hindi dubbed version of the “Kabzaa movie” is also a good option to watch for Hindi audiences. You can enjoy this true piece of entertainment in the nearby cinema from 17 march 2023.

A massive PAN Indian film named Kabzaa starring Upendra and Shriya Saran in the lead roles hit the screens today. Kiccha Sudeepa and Shiva Rajkumar played crucial cameos. The film, originally shot in Kannada, was dubbed into other Indian languages. P Chandru directed this period action film. Let’s see how it is.

Arkeshwara (Upendra), an Indian Air Force Officer, hails from a freedom fighter family. He is head over heels for Madhumathi (Shriya Saran), an affluent girl, and both plan to tie the knot. On the other hand, we get to see a bunch of dreadful gangsters and politicians who are craving power in Amarapura. In a complete turn around of events, Arkeshwara enters the crime world and eventually becomes a king. How did that change Arkeshwara’s life is the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

The cinematography is too good in Kabzaa, and the bygone era has been very well showcased. Upendra, who is known for his unique films, gave a very good performance. His screen presence is stunning, and he aced it in stunning action avatar.

The cameos by Kiccha Sudeepa and Shiva Rajkumar give major relief. The actors though seen for a very short time, make their presence felt. The action sequences are nicely composed, and the interval bang is alright.

Minus Points:

Once in a while, a film becomes a trendsetter through its unique presentation or concept. KGF is one such film that redefined heroism in Indian cinema. There is nothing wrong with getting inspired by such trendsetting movies, but the problem with Kabzaa is it almost looks like a replica of KGF. There must be some authentic factor to make the film appealing, but Kabzaa doesn’t have one. Right from story, narrative, and dialogues, Kabzaa looks exactly like KGF.

Even the voiceover that drives the story forward looks exactly similar to KGF. There is this car chase sequence in KGF 2 where the makers used a blackout effect to enhance the impact. In Kabzaa, this particular effect is used not once but throughout the movie, annoying the viewers extremely. It’s high time the filmmakers come out from KGF hangover and understand that the elements which worked for a movie won’t work all the time for other films.

That’s not the whole problem with Kabzaa. It has ages old story where the protagonist enters the crime world under inevitable circumstances. The film lacks any emotions, and hence we don’t feel the pain of the characters. The emphasis was entirely on making a larger-than-life film on a huge canvas, but unfortunately, the storytelling took a back seat in all this.

The second half is very difficult to sit through. The love track between the lead pair is pretty boring, and the romantic scenes keep coming intermittently, adding to the unending woes. The editing needed some serious changes. The fast cuts and clumsy presentation of scenes don’t help the film at all. The movie is dragged needlessly, and an even more aweful thing is announcing a sequel to this movie.

Technical Aspects:

Ravi Basrur’s music is loud, and the impact is heavily missing. Also, the story doesn’t give him enough scope to show his skills. The cinematography and production values are excellent. If not for AJ Shetty’s wonderful camera work, the movie would have been unbearable. The editing is bad, and the Telugu dubbing is poor.

Coming to the director Chandru, he did a poor job with the film. He also handled the story and screenplay but failed to leave a mark in any aspect. Even for a full blown action entertainer to succeed, there must be some emotion. But this aspect is completely missing in Kabzaa. The protagonist taking upon a crime world is a beaten-to-death concept, and hence there should have been some novelty.

On the whole, Kabzaa is a loud and boring period action drama that fails to live up to its expectations. Upendra and the cinematography are the only solaces in this tiresome flick. The routine story, uninteresting narrative, and lack of emotions make it a disappointing fare. You can comfortably skip this film.

Kabza Movie Review: An Intense Action Thriller that will Soak You In

Kabza Movie Review

If you love gangster thrillers then Kabza is definitely the movie for you. For those who found KGF an ultimate movie experience, Kabza will surely prove to be a delight to watch on the big screens. It is surely the next big thing from the Kannada film industry. Kabza ticks all the right boxes for an action thriller. The movie has an unrelenting narrative that keeps the viewers hooked from the beginning till end. There is no scope for a breather when you are watching this highly engrossing tale of the underworld from the mid 20th century unfolding before you.

Kabza has a powerful storyline that is backed by the crisp screenplay and ultimate background music. The tension and uneasiness in the air during the certain moments of the film is a next level experience. Background music compliments the great action sequences and the thrill of the tale. The movie never tends to get tedious with its storytelling and always has something to surprise the viewers.

Kabza Movie Review: An Intense Action Thriller that will Soak You In

Upendra is fantastic as a mafia leader. He is rightly the main character as his persona and skills are completely mind-blowing in the role of a gangster. Kiccha Sudeep is as usual at his finest. He shines in the role of a police inspector. Shriya Saran is a delight to watch. Her screen presence is second to none in this fast-paced mafia thriller.

R. Chandru has done a fantastic job in bringing out the best of every involved actor in this film. Even the emotional scenes are done with complete perfection. There is not a single department in which Kabza really lacks. Hardcore action thriller fans are going to fall in love with this movie.

Kabzaa Movie Review and Rating

Movie review:  Kabzaa

Director:  R. Chandru, Shivu Hiremath, and Soori

Producers :  Anand Pandit, R. Chandru

Music :  Ravi Basrur

Starring :  Upendra, Kichcha Sudeep, ShivrajKumar, Shriya, Sudha, Murali Sharma etc.   Release Date :  March 17, 2023

 Rating :  2/5

Kabzaa Movie Review:  Upendra, Kichcha Sudeep and Shiavrajkumar starrer much hyped action drama Kabzaa has finally hit the theaters today on 17th March. Let’s see the story of Kabzaa.

Story:  Kabzaa is  set in the pre-independence period. Arkeshwara (Upendra)’ father dies during the freedom movement. Mother (Sudha) raises him hard. Arkeshwara also has an elder brother Sankeswara. Amarapuram princess Madhumathi (Sriya) and Arkeshwara fall in love. But Veera Bahadur (Murali Sharma), the Maharaja of Amarapuram, Madhumati’s father, wants to marry his daughter to a royal family member. After twist and turn, Arkeshwara turns rowdy, and then a mafia don? What happened after that? What are the roles of police officer Bhargav Bakshi (Sudeep) and Shivraj Kumar? Why the son of a patriotic father becomes an underworld don? To get these answers, one should watch the movie on silver screen.

 Plus Points:

·         Performance

·         Presence of Upendra

·         Shivarajkumar’ entry in climax

·         Visual

·         Punching dialogues

 Minus Points:

·         Direction

·         BGM

·         Editing

Performance:  Everyone knows how great Upendra is. But due to the character in this, he didn’t get a chance to show more emotions than just anger and pain. He has played his character to perfection. Kichcha Sudeep has a special cameo as Bhargav Bakshi which manages to make an impact.  Shriya got a good role in the form of Madhumati. Her performance in some scenes is impressive. Sudha acts well as Upendra’s mother. Kota Srinivasa Rao is limited to one or two shots only. Murali Sharma’s character seems a bit awkward. Sunil Puranik and Anoop Revanna have given their best. Rest of the cast of Kabzaa perform accordingly.

Technical:  There is nothing new in the story. It’s the story of how a mild mannered, common man who stays away from fights rises to become a tough mafia don. We have been seeing similar stories in past. The songs are good.  Kabzaa has many one-liners and punching dialogues. R Chandru, manages to recreate the 1940’s period by erecting huge sets and even costumes which look realistic on the screen. Music is just too loud and editing is ok. The direction is just unbearable

Analysis:  Shivarajkumar’s entry in the climax of Kabzaa brings a  twist in the tale and is one of the main points in the movie Kabzaa. The story, visual presentation, and ensemble cast makes this film worth watching.
