Minimum Qualifications for admission to Full-time PhD Programmes
Table 1 defines the minimum qualifications required for admission to full-time Ph. D. programmes at IIT Delhi. Please note:
These are Institute minimum requirements and any Department/Centre/School operating through their DRC/CRC/SRC can specify higher short-listing criteria than what is specified here.
This table includes most of the degrees, but each DRC/CRC/SRC is free to specify the qualifications and disciplines acceptable for admission to their programmes.
Candidates in the final year of their programmes and who expect to complete all their qualifying degree requirements before the date of registration are also eligible to apply for admissions. For short-listing purposes, their performance until the preceding semester (preceding year if their programmes are year based) would be considered but their admission would be provisional, subject to their meeting the minimum eligibility criteria after their final qualifying examination results are announced. In any case, all admissions are provisional at first and it is confirmed only after all certificates and previous records are duly checked and verified, a process which may take a few weeks into the starting semester.
Table 1: Minimum Qualification for Admission to full-time PhD Programmes
Exemptions, relaxations and clarifications:.
For SC/ST/PwD category candidates , the minimum performance in the qualifying degree (S. No. 1 & 2 in Table 1) is relaxed from 60% to 55% (CGPA relaxed from 6.00 to 5.50).
For SC/ST/PwD category candidates , the minimum performance in the qualifying degree (Sr. No.3 in Table 1) is relaxed from 70% to 65% (CGPA relaxed from 7.00 to 6.50).
Qualifying degree performance is computed by aggregating performance over all the semesters/years of the qualifying degree, as per the credit or weightage system approved in the institution/ board where the degree has been completed.
Requirement of qualification in GATE / National Exam is waived for the following categories of applicants:
Currently registered students in Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) pursuing B.Tech./B.E./ Integrated M. Tech/ Integrated M.Sc. Programmes (or any other programme of minimum four year duration, admission to which is on the basis of JEE), who have completed 6 semesters or more, and have CGPA of 8.00 or above (on a 10 point scale). Such students must obtain a CGPA of 8.00 or above at the time of graduation, and before they formally register for the Ph.D. programme (80% aggregate marks, if marks are the primary mode of evaluation);
Graduates of CFTIs (in the programmes marked under (i)) with a final graduation CGPA of more than 8.00 (80% aggregate marks, if marks are the primary mode of evaluation);
M.A or M.Sc. graduates from IITs with CGPA 8.00 or above.
For purposes of shortlisting, the primary method of evaluation (i.e., CGPA/CPI, or aggregate percentage, whichever is appropriate) followed by the institution where candidate has obtained his/her qualifying degree will be used by IIT Delhi for determining whether the candidate meets the final shortlisting requirements.
For assistantship purposes only (and not for qualification), candidates with M.B.B.S. qualification will be considered equivalent to M. Tech., for admission to Ph.D. programme in Centre for Biomedical Engineering;
For candidates with M.A. degree in English, a 5% relaxation in marks or 0.5 relaxation in CGPA may be permitted for admission to the Ph.D. programme in Humanities and Social Sciences;
Candidates holding an MBA degree are eligible for applying to the Ph.D. programme in the Department of Management Studies.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Mathematics program provides advanced education through advanced coursework, independent study, and original, creative research to make a significant contribution to the field of applied mathematics and to prepare students for careers in academia and industrial research.
Admission Requirements
The program normally requires a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or applied mathematics. Candidates whose degree is in another field (for example, computer science, physics, or engineering) and whose background in mathematics is strong are also eligible for admission and are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. A cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 is usually required. The applicants must also have demonstrated the potential for conducting original research in applied mathematics. A combined verbal and quantitative GRE examination score of at least 304, and an analytic writing score of at least 3.0 are required. TOEFL scores (if required) should be a minimum of 80/550 (internet-based/paper-based test scores). A professional statement of goals/objectives (two pages) and a curriculum vitae must be submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required. Students must remove deficiencies in essential undergraduate courses that are prerequisites for the degree program, in addition to fulfilling all other degree requirements. Typically, admitted students score at least 165 on the quantitative portion of the GRE; however, meeting the minimum or typical GPA and test score requirements does not guarantee admission.
The Director of Graduate Studies serves as temporary academic adviser for newly admitted graduate students in the master of science and the Ph.D. programs until an appropriate faculty member is selected as the research adviser. Students are responsible for following all departmental procedures, as well as the general requirements of the Graduate College.
Curriculum
Minimum degree credits required: 72
Students must take the colloquium/seminar course MATH 593 at least six times with a satisfactory grade.
Students must past three written qualifying exams at the Ph.D. level: MATH 500 Applied Analysis I , MATH 577 Computational Mathematics I , and one of the following: MATH 540 Probability , MATH 553 Discrete Applied Mathematics I , or MATH 563 Mathematical Statistics .
Students must pass one qualifying exam by the end of their third semester, and must pass all three by the end of their fifth semester. Students can attempt each exam twice, if needed. The exams will be offered twice every year, one in the fall and the other in spring. Students can take one, two, or three exams each semester.
Besides the courses in the core areas of study, the remaining courses in the program are selected in consultation with the student’s academic adviser. The program may include at most three MATH courses at the 400-level. The program requires that the student takes the colloquium/seminar course MATH 593 at least six times with a satisfactory grade. The program must include at least two to four courses in an area of concentration outside of the department, as approved by the Director of Graduate Studies; these may include 400-level courses.
The comprehensive examination consists of an oral examination based on the student’s research proposal. The exam aims to ensure that the student has the background to carry out successful research in their chosen area and the proposed research has sufficient scholarly merit.
The dissertation (thesis) is expected to contain a distinct and substantial, original, and publishable contribution to the field of study. The credit hours devoted to thesis research ( MATH 691 ) must total between 24 and 36. An oral examination in defense of the thesis constitutes completion of the degree.
Exceptions to these general rules require approval by the departmental graduate studies committee.

- PhD Program
Introduction
We live in the era of mathematics. It permeates all aspects of economic and social activity, and its influence and impact are profound.Technology and mathematics are closely connected in several ways. Modern technology would be unthinkable without mathematics. It has both an inherent logic and beauty while also providing the structure and models from which physicists, chemists, biologists, medics, engineers, economists, and social scientists build an understanding of our world and construct the tools to improve our lives.
Mathematics is the abstract study of topics such as numbers, structures, shapes, space, quantity, and change. Mathematics may be studied in its own right (pure mathematics) or as it is applied to other disciplines such as natural sciences, engineering, medicine, finance, computer science, and social sciences (applied mathematics).

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems
However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds. Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.
