काल यात्रा.

समय में आगे या पीछे जाने कि संकल्पना को काल यात्रा कहते है और मै इसके बारे में इसलिया लिख रहा हू ताकि में जनों को इसके होने के सम्भावना से वाखिफ कर सकू क्यों कि यह एक ऐसा विधान है जिसके बारे मे आम लोगो के पास बहुत ही काम जानकारी है.वैसे तो एक ज़माने में काल यात्रा वैज्ञानिको की सनक मानी जाती थी लेकिन अगर मेरे पास एक टाइम मशीन होता तो में आदि मानव से मिलने जाता या उस दौर में जाता जब दुनिया बनी थी. तब शायद मै ब्रहमांड के एक छोर पर जा कर यह भी देख सकू की हमारी सम्पूर्ण अंतरिक्ष की कथा का अंत कैसे होगा. लेकिन हमें इसके होने के संभावना को देखने के लिए एक भौतिक वैज्ञानिक के नजरिये से देखना होगा. यह काम उतना भी मुश्किल भी नहीं है जितना लगता है. हर वास्तु  भले ही मेरे यह कुर्सी ही क्यों ना हो. हर चीज़ की चौड़ाई,लम्बाई और ऊचाई भी होती है. लेकिन इसके इलावा एक लम्बाई और भी होती है ‘काल की लम्बाई’ और काल यात्रा का मतलब यह है की उस चौथे आयाम के पास जाना.

इसे समझने के लिए हम एक कार का उदाहरण ले सकते है अगर हम एक कार को सीधे रास्ते में तेज रफ़्तार से चलाए तो हम एक आयाम में सफर कर रहे होंगे. दाए या बाए मुड़ने पर एक आयाम और जुड़ जाता है लेकिन हम जब पहाड़ी सडको पर उपर नीचे जाते है तो ऊचाई भी जुड़ जाती है और हमें हमारा तीसरा आयाम मिल जाता है.लेकिन पृथ्वी पर हम काल यात्रा कैसे कर सकते है. हम उस चौथे आयाम में जाने का रास्ता कैसे ढूढेगे.

टाइम ट्रेवल वाले फिल्मो में अकसर एक विशाल मशीन होती है जो ऊर्जा पीती है और यह मशीन चौथे आयाम में एक रास्ता बना देती है जिससे हम काल में एक सुरंग की मदद से काल यात्रा कर सकते  हैं . यह राय दूर की कौड़ी भले ही लगे लेकिन सच शायद इससे अलग हो पर ऐसा कर पाना नामुमकिन नहीं है. भौतिक विज्ञानिक काल में सुरंग बनाने की सो़च रहे थे लेकिन हम काल यात्रा के बारे में एक अलग नज़रिए से सो़च रहे है. हम यह जानना चाहते है की क्या हम आपने अतीत या भविष्य में जाने के लिय कुदरत के नियमों के आधार पर एक रास्ता बना सकते है और तलाश करने पे पता लगा कि वो पहले से ही मोजूद है इतना ही नहीं हमने तो उन्हें एक नाम भी दे रखा है ‘वोर्म होल’. सच तो यह है की चारो ओर वोर्म होल है लेकिन वो इतने छोटे है की वो सामने नज़र नहीं आते. वो काल और अंतराल के चप्पे चप्पे पर मोजूद है. आपको यह बात शायद अटपटी लग रही होगी लेकिन कोई भी चीज़ न तो समतल है ना हीं ठोस. अगर आप ध्यान से देखे तो आपको हर चीज़ में दरार,सुराख़ या झुर्रिय नज़र आयगी यह भौतिकी का एक आम सिद्धांत है जो काल पर भी लागू होता है जैसे एक पूल टेबल की सतह पूरी समतल और सपाट लगती है लेकिन अगर हम ध्यान से देखे तो हमको सच का अंदाज़ा हो जायेगा की इनमे अनगिनत सुराख़ और दरारे है. यहाँ तक की सबसे चिकने चीज़ में भी दरारे और झुरिया है. पहले तीन आयामों में तो मेने आपको यह बड़ी आसानी से समझा दिया लेकिन यकीन किज़ए चौथी आयाम में भी यह बात बिलकुल सही है. काल में भी छोटी छोटी दरारे और गड्ढे है. अगर हम बहुत छोटे पयमाने पर बात करे मेरा मतलब अनु और परमाणु से भी छोटे पेमाने पर तो हमें वहा वो मिलेगा जिसे हम कहते   है  ‘ कुआन्टम   फोर्स ’ और   यही   वह   जगह   है   जहा   वोर्म   होल   होते   है और वो काल   और   अंतराल   के   बीच   आने   जाने   के   छोटे   छोटे   रास्ते   बनते   और   बंद   करते रहते   है . वह   इस   कुआन्टूम   जगत   में   मौजूद   रहते   है . असल   में   यह   दो   अलग   अलग   जगहो   को   और   दो   अलग   अलग   काल   को   जोड़ते   है .

लेकिन   अफसोस   की   बात   यह   है   की  यह वास्तविक   सुरंगे   एक   सेंटीमीटर   के   एक   अरब   खरबे   हिस्से   जितनी   चौड़ी   होती   है   और   इससे   से   कोई   भी   नहीं   गुजर   सकता   लेकिन   यह   वोर्म   होल   एक   टाइम   मशीन   का   एक   आधार   बन   सकता   है . कुछ   वैज्ञानिक   मानते   है   की   इनमे   से   ही   एक   को   खरब   गुणे   बड़ा   बना   दिया   जाये   की   इससे   कोई   इंसान   या   अंतरिक्ष   यान   जा सके . अगर   हमारे   पास   ऐसी   टेक्नोलोजी   हो   और   हमें   ज़रूरत   भर   कि   उर्जा   मिल   जाये   तो   शायद   हम   अंतरिक्ष   के   एक   विशाल   वोर्म   होल   को   बड़ा   कर   एक   ही जगह   पर   रखे   और   उनके   बीच   फासला   अंतराल   के   बजाय   काल   का   हो   तो   उससे   हो   कर   हमारा   यान   पृथ्वी   के   करीब   ही   आयगा   जायेगा   लेकिन   उसका   सफर   हमारे   अतीत   में   ही   होगा .   हो   सकता   है   की   हमारा   यान   डायांनासोर   की   जमाने   में   पहुच   जाए   ठीक   उनके   सामने.   लेकिन   मुझे   लगता   है   चारो   आयामों   को   सो़च   पाना   मुश्किल   है   और   वोर्म   होल   इतनी   आसान   चीज़   भी   नहीं   है   की   हम   अपना   सर   खपा   सके .

  लेकिन   यह   प्रयोग   असफल   इसलिये   रहा   क्योंकि   इसकी   वजह   एक   ही   है   जिसे   हम   विरोधावास   कहते   है . विरोधावास   विरोधावशकी   समस्या   यह   है   की

जरा   सोचिये   किसी   ने   कल   सुरंग   एक   वोर्म   होल   बना   लिया   है   और   वोह   सिर्फ   एक   मिनट   पीछे   जा   सकता   है . वैसे   तो   एक   मिनट   की   काल   यात्रा   ज्यादा   नहीं   लगता   लेकिन   यह   एक   मिनट   की   काल   यात्रा   बड़ी   मुसीबत   बन   सकती   है . उस   वार्म   होल   से   वह   देख   सकता   है   की   मिनट   भर   पहले   कैसा   था . लेकिन   अगर   वह   मिनट   भर   पहले   वाले   कि   हत्या   कर   दे   तो ? इसी   को   विरोधावास   कहते   है   इसका   कोई   मतलब   नहीं   होता . इसकी   वजह   से   अंतरिक्ष   दुविधा   में   रहते   है   इस   तरह   से   वोह   बुनयादी   नियुम   ही   टूट   जायेगा   जिससे   पूरा   ब्रम्हांड   चल   रहा   है   इस   से   हम   किसी   काम   का   अंजाम   तो   देख   सकते   है   लेकिन   उसे   बदल   नहीं   सकते . मुझे   नहीं   लगता   की   कोई   चीज़   खुद   को   नामुमकिन   बना   सकती   है   अगर   वो   ऐसा   कर   पाती   तो   पुरे   ब्रह्माण्ड   में   अफरा   तफरी   के   माहोल   में   जाने   से   कोई   नहीं   रोक   पाता . इसलिये   कुछ   न   कुछ   ऐसा   हमेशा   होता   है   की   जो   विरोधावास   को   रोकता   लेकिन   इस   मामले   में   समस्या   की   जड़   तो   वोर्म   होल   ही   था . में   तो   इस   नातिजे   पे   पंहुचा   हू   इस   तरह   के   वोर्म   होल   का   वजूद   ही   नहीं   हो   सकता   ओर   इसकी   वजह   फीड   बेक   है .

अगर   आप   किसी   संगीत   समारोह   में   गए   होंगे   तो   एक   हाई   पिच   धवनी   को   जानते   ही   होगे   यही   है   फीड   बेक   इसकी   वजह   बड़ी   मामूली   सी   है   आवाज   माइक्रोफोन   में   जाती   है   वो   तारो   से   होती   हुइ   और   एम्पलीफायर   से   तेज   होकर   स्पीकर   के   जरये   बाहार   आती   है   लेकिन   अगर   स्पीकर   से   आवाज़   मायक   में   बार   बार   वापस   जाये   तो   इसका   एक   लूप   बन   जाता   है   और   आवाज़   लगातार   तेज   हो   जायेगी   अगर   इसे   रोका   नहीं   गया   तो   तो   फीड   बेक   सारे   स्पीकर   को   नष्ट   कर   देगी . और   वार्म   होल   के   साथ   भी   यही   होता   है . लेकिन   उसमे   आवाज़   की   जगह   radiation होता   है . जैसे   ही   वार्म   होल   बड़ा   होता   है   कुदरती   radiation उसके   अंदर   जाता   है   और   उसका   भी   एक   लूप   बन   जाता   है   अतः   इसका   फीड   बेक   इतना   दमदार   होता   है   की   उससे   पूरा   वार्म   होल   ही   नष्ट   हो   जाता   है . इसलिए   हम   इस   वजह   से   इसको   टाइम   मशीन   की   तरह   इस्तेमाल   नहीं   कर   सकते   और   इसी   वजह   से   अतीत   में   कल   यात्रा   कर   पाना   नामुमकिन   है  . ऐसा   करने   पर   विरोधावास   होगा   ही   होगा   मगर   कहानी   यंही   नहीं   खतम   होती . ऐसा   नहीं   है   कि   हम   किसी   तरह   की   काल   यात्रा   कर   ही   नहीं   पाएंगे .

समय   किसी   नदी   की   तरह   आगे   बढ़ता   है   और   ऐसा   लगता   है   की   हम   सब   समय   के   धारा   के   साथ   बहे   चले   जा   रहे   है   लेकिन   समय   एक   दूसरे   तरीके   से   भी   नदी   जैसा   है   वो   भी   अलग   अलग   जगह   पर   अलग   अलग   रफ़्तार   से   बहता   है   और   यही   भविष्य   की   सेर   की   कुंजी   है   ये   विचार   दिया   था   अल्बर्ट   आइन्स्टीन   ने   सौ   साल   से   जायदा   पहले   उन्हें   अंजादा   था   कुछ   जगहों   पर   वक्त   की   रफ़्तार   कम   हो   जाती   है   और   कुछ   जगहों   पर   तेज   उनकी   बात   बिलकुल   सही   थी   इसका   साबुत   है   हमाँरे   ठीक   ऊपर   अंतरिक्ष   में   ये   है  GPS ३१   उपग्रहों   को   वो   नेटवर्क   जो   पृथ्वी   के   चारो   और   चक्कर   लगते   है   उपग्रह   ही   उपग्रहों   को   रास्ता   दिखाते   है   लेकिन   उसे   ये   भी   पता   लगता   है   की   अंतरिक्ष   में   वक्त   की   रफ़्तार   पृथ्वी   से   तेज   है   हर   यान   के   अंदर   एक   बेहंद   सटीक   घडी   लगी   है   लेकिन   इतनी   सटीक   होने   के   बाद   भी   रोज   एक   सेकंड   के   एक   अरबे   हिस्से   जितनी   तेज   हो   जाती   है   वो   इतना   बड़े   नहीं   इसलिए   उसे   रोज   ठीक   करना   पड़ता   है   अगर   ऐसा   नहीं   किया   जाये   तो   इस   मामूली   से   बदलाव   से   ही   पूरा   सिस्टम   बिगड   जायेगा   उससे   पृथ्वी   पर   मौजूद   हर   यंत्र   में   रोजाना   करीब   दस   किल्लोमीटर   का   फर्क   आ   जायेगा   आप   अंदाजा   लगा   सकते   है   की   इसससे   कितना   फर्क   पड   सकता   है , कितना   हंगामा   हो   सकता   है   समस्या   उन   घडियों   में   नहीं   है   यंह   पर   तो   नीचे   पृथ्वी   के   मुकाबले   वक्त   ही   ज्यादा   तेज़ी   से   चलता   है   इस   अनोखे   फर्क   की   असली   वजह   है   हमारी   पृथ्वी   का   भार . आइंस्टीन   को   अंदाज़ा   था   किसी   पिंड   का   असर   वक्त   पर   पड़ता   है   और   वो   नदी   के   धीमे   बवाह   वाले   हिस्से   की   तरह   वक्त   की   रफ़्तार   को   कम   करता   है   वो   पिंड   जितना   भरी   होगा   वक्त   पर   खिचाव   भी   उतना   ही   जायदा   होगा . ये   अनोखा   सच   है   जिसके   साहारे   हम   भविष्य   की   काल   यात्रा   कर   सकते   है   मानता   हू   कि   इस   बात   को   समझना   इतना   आसान   भी   नहीं   है   इसलिए   आपको   एक   आसान   से   उदारहंन   से   समझता   हू  . ये   है   गीज़ा   का   मशहूर   पिरामिड   इसका   वज़न   चार   करोड़   से   भी   ज्यादा   है   हर   भारी   पिंड   की   तरह   ये   भी   वक्त   की   रफ़्तार   को   कम   कर   रहा   है   यंह   ये   असर   बहुत   कम   है   पृथ्वी   के   मुकाबले   एक   अरबे   हिस्सा   जितना   कम   लेकिन   अगर   हम   इसे   काफी   बढ़ा   दे   तो   बात   आपके   समझ   में   आ   जायेगी   लगेगा   की   यंह   भी   वही   हो   रहा   है   पिरामिड   के   पास   हर   चीज   की   रफ़्तार   कम   हो   जाती   है   वैसे   ही   जैसे   कई   जगहों   पर   नदी   का   बहाव   कम   हो   जाता   है   यंहा   पर   वक्त   ही   दूसरी   जगहों   के   मुकाबले   कही   धीरे   चलता   है   लेकिन   अगर   पिरामिड   के   पास   खड़े   लोग   दूर   से   देखे   तो ? उन्हें   बिलकुल   उल्टा   असर   नज़र   आएगा   क्यूँ   की   उनकी   रफ़्तार   कम   होती   है   इसलिए   उन्हें   दुरी   पर   हर   चीज़   तेज़ी   से   चलती   नज़र   आएगी   ये   असर   है   पिरामिड   के   भर   का   यही   बदलाव   हमारे   लिए   काल   यात्र   के   दरवाज़े   खोलता   है   अगर   हमें   कल   यात्रा   करनी   है   तो   हमें   वो   चीज़   चाहिए   जो   पिरामिड   से   कही   ज्यादा   भरी   हो   और   में   जानता   हो   की   वो   चीज़   क्या   है . हामारी   आकाशगंगा   के   केन्द्र   में   हमसे   करीब   छब्बीस   हज़ार   प्रकाश   वर्ष   दूर   मौजूद   है   हमारे   पुरे   तारामंडल   की   सबसे   बड़ी   चीज़   वो   ढकी   है   गैस   के   बादलों   ओर   तारो   से   वो   एक   बहुत   ही   बड़ा   ब्लैक   होल   है   जिसका   भार   करीब   चालीस   लाख   सुरजो   के   बराबर   है   और   लगता   है   की   वो   अपने   ही   गुरूत्वाकर्षण   बल   के   दवाब   से   इसके   अंदर   दब   गए   है   हम   उस   ब्लैक   होल   के   जितने   करीब   जायेगे   गुरुत्वाकर्षण   बल   भी   उतना   ही   ज्यादा   होगा   उसके   ज्यादा   करीब   जाने   पर   तो   प्रकाश   भी   उसके   चगुंल   में   आने   से   नहीं   बच   सकता   वो   स्याह   अंधरे   में   ढका   करीब   ढाई   करोर   किल्लोमीटर   ब्यास   का   गोला   है   इस   तरह   के   ब्लैक   होल   का   समय   का   बड़ा   गहरा   असर   पड़ता   है   यह   उसे   इतना   कम   कर   देता   है   की   ब्रह्मांड   कि   कियो   और   चीज़   उसे   उतना   कम   नहीं   कर   सकती   इसलिए   वह   एक   कुदरती   टाइम   मशीन   बन   जाता   है   में   तो   ये   सोच   रहा   हू   की   अगर   किसी   दिन   कोई   अंतरीक्ष   यान   उसका   फायदा   उठने   में   कामयाब   हो   गया   तो   क्या   होगा  ? सबसे   पहले   तो   उसे   अंदर   खिचे   जाने   से   बचना   होगा   इसके   लिए   उन्हें   इसके   किनारे   से   गुजरना   होगा   ताकि   वह   उन्हें   खीच   ना   पाए   उन्हें   सही   दिशा   ओर   रफ़्तार   बनाये   रखनी   होगी   वरना   वह   बच   नहीं   पायेगी   अगर   सब   ठीक   ठाक   रहा   तो   वो   यान   उसके   करीब   पांच   करोड़   किल्लोमीटर   लंबे   व्यास   की   परिकर्मा   करने   लगेगा   वंहा   वो   बिलकुल   सुरक्षति   होगा   उसकी   रफ़्तार   इतनी   होगी   की   वो   और   नहीं   गिर   पायेगा   उस   अभियान   पर   अगर   कोई   स्पस   एजेन्सी   पृथ्वी   या   उस   ब्लैक   होल   से   काफी   दूर   से   नियंत्रण   रख   रही   होगी   तो   उसे   लगेगा   की   उसका   यान   सोलह   मिनट   में   एक   चक्कर   लगा   रहा   है   लेकिन   यान   में   बैठे   बहादुर   लोग   उस   विशाल   पिंड   के   बेहद   करीब   होंगे   और   उनके   लिए   वक्त   की   रफ़्तार   काफी   कम   होगी   वंहा   पर   इसका   असर   भी   पिरामिड   या   पृथवी   के   पास   होने   के   मुकाबले   कही   अलग   होगा   यान   कर्मी   दल   के   लिए   वक्त   करीब   आधा   हो   जायेगा ’ अपनी   सोलह   मिनट   की   परिक्रमा   के   लिए   उन्हें   सिर्फ   आठ   मिनट   ही   महसूस   होंगे   वो   उसकी   परिक्रमा   करते   रहेगे   और   उस   ब्लैक   होल   से   दूर   बैठे   लोगो   के   मुकाबले   आधा   वक्त   ही   महसूस   करते   रहेगे . यान   ओर   उसका   कर्मी   दल   समय   की   सेर   कर   रहा   होगा   काल   यात्रा   मान   लीजये   की   कर्मीदल   ने   अपने   यान   में   पांच   साल   तक   उस   ब्लैक   होल   का   चक्कर   लगाया   तब   तक   दुनिया   दस   साल   आगे   निकल   जायेगा   जब   वो   पृथ्वी   पर   वापस   आयेगे   तब   तक   उनके   मुकाबले   बाकि   लोगो   की   उम्र   जायदा   होगी   यान   का   कर्मीदल   भविष्य   की   पृथवी   पर   वापस   आएगा   उसने   ना   ही   अंतरीक्ष   की   सेर   की   होगी   बल्कि   समय   की   सेर   भी   की   होगी . मतलब   की   बहुत   ही   बड़ा   ब्लैक   होल   किसी   टाइम   मशीन   से   कम   नहीं   होता   लेकिन   जाहिर   है   की   ये   व्यव्हारिक   नहीं   है . हा   वार्म   होल   से   थोडा   अलग   जरूर   है   किउकी   इसमें   विरोधावास   नहीं   होता . साथ   ही   फीड   बेक   से   खुद   को   नष्ट   भी   नहीं   करता   लेकिन   ये   बड़ा   ही   खतरनाक   है   ये   हमसे   काफी   दूर   है   और   ये   भविष्य   में   ज्यादा   दूर   भी   नहीं   ले   जा   सकता . गनीमत   है   की   हमारे   पास   काल   यात्रा   का   एक   और   साधन   भी   है   उसकी   मदद   से   हम   एक   असली   टाइम   मशीन   भी   बना   सकते   है   क्युकि   वो   हमारी   आखरी   लेकिन   बेहतरीन   उम्मीद   है . ऐसा   कैसे   होगा   हमें   समझने   के   लिए   हम   विज्ञान   कथा   फिल्मो   की   परिवहन   सेवा   की   कल्पना   करते   है   मान   लीजये   की   हमरे   पृथ्वी   के   चारो   ओर   पटरी   बिछी   है . उस   पटरी   पर   चलती   है   सुपर   फास्ट   ट्रेन . हम   इस   कल्पिनिक   ट्रेन   को   ही   प्रकाश   के   रफ़्तार   के   ज्यादा   ज्यादा   से   ज्यादा   करीब   ले   जाकर   देखेगे   की   वो   किस   तरह   से   टाइम   मशीन   बन   सकती   है . इसमें   सवार   है   भविष्य   की   एक   तरफ़ा   सेर   पर   जाने   वाले   सेलानी . जैसे   ट्रेन   की   रफ़्तार   तेज   होती   जायेगी . जल्दी   ही   वो   पृथ्वी   की   परिकर्मा   करने   लगती   है . प्रकाश   की   रफ़्तार   तक   पहुँचने   के   लिए   उसे   बहुत   तेज़ी   से   पृथ्वी   का   चक्कर   लगाना   पड़ेगा   एक   सेकंड   में   सात   बार . लेकिन   हम   लाख   कोशिश   क्यों   ना   कर   ले   ट्रेन   कभी   प्रकाश   की   रफ़्तार   से   नहीं   चल   पायेगी   क्युकि   भोतिकी   की   नियम   है . हा   इतना   जरूर   है   वो   उसकी   रफ़्तार   के   आस   पास   पहुच   सकती   है . लेकिन   तभी   होगी   एक   आसधारण   बात   उस   ट्रेन   के   अंदर   बाहर   के   मुकाबले   वक्त   काफी   धीरे   चलेगा . वैसे   ही   जैसे   ब्लैक   होल   के   पास   चलता   है   शायद   उससे   भी   धीरे . ट्रेन   में   सब   कुछ   धीमी   रफ़्तार   में   होने   लगेगा . ऐसा   रफ़्तार   की   सीमा   को   बच्चन   के   लिए   होता   है   और   आप   भी   इसकी   वजह   समझ   सकते   है . आप   ही   कल्पना   कीजये   की   एक   बच्ची   ट्रेन   में   ट्रेन   की   दिशा   में   दोड़ती   है   अगर   हम   उसके   दोड़ने   की   रफ़्तार   को   ट्रेन   की   रफ़्तार   से   जोड़   दे   तो   उसकी   रफ़्तार   ज्याद   तेज   हो   जायेगी   ना ? One of the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme’s mandatory requirements is to produce a 4,000 words long extended essay, which should be submitted as an independent piece of research.

All IB students must complete the extended essay assignment regardless of the subjects they are taking because, together with CAS and TOK, it is a core module of the IB programme.

An extended essay allows students to choose any suitable topic of their choice and demonstrate their knowledge and capability beyond what they learn in the classroom. This assignment sets the stage for students to hone their research and writing skills for Bachelor’s and Master’s level coursework.

Students write an extended essay in the second term of the IB program’s first year. All students are expected to work closely with their supervisor to finalise the essay topic and the research questions.

The project involves submitting one extended essay draft to get the supervisor’s feedback before submitting the second and final version. A short viva voce must be included at the end of the essay.

Extended essays are marked on a scale from 0 to 34 by external examines chosen by the IB itself. The score you will achieve in the assignment will relate to one of the following bands:

How to Select a Topic for the Extended Essay?

Selecting an enjoyable and manageable topic for the extended essay is perhaps the most exciting yet challenging part of the whole process. In a nutshell, you will be required to research a topic in one of the six subjects you are undertaking for the IB Programme. The selection criteria are based on the analysis of an issue of global significance in a specific context. For example, you can investigate technological, environmental, medical, or cultural trends from the local perspective. Here are some tips for choosing the best extended essay topic:

• It should neither be too broad nor too narrow.
• Choose a topic you are passionate about.
• Are there any global trends you are curious to explore and understand?

How to Formulate Research Questions for the Extended Essay?

Once the topic has been approved, you can proceed to formulate the research questions (s). A poorly planned research question can cause complications at a later stage, so make sure to take your time to develop a question that would genuinely add value to the existing literature.

The answer to the formulated research question should not be a simple yes or no. It should instead provide valuable information in a larger context. The research question should be focused and relevant to the title. If the research question includes a hypothesis, then there is no obligation on your part to provide it right or wrong. Your job is to test the hypothesis and reveal the facts only.

The question should not necessarily start with words like “Is”, “Will”, “Should”, “Why”, “How”, or “Does”. Merely asserting that “yes, this is correct”, or “no, this is not correct” is inappropriate.

The highest-scoring essays usually address a research question that starts with broader phrases such as, “An investigation of”, “Exploring the idea”, “An analysis of”, “To what extent”, “A review of”, or “Examining the role”. Or it could simply be a hypothesis statement that you aim to test.

If you set out to answer a research question without contemplating the resources required to address it, then you are making a fatal mistake. Whether the essay research is primary or secondary, we cannot understate the importance of a well-thought-out plan to gather relevant supporting academic sources.

However, in most cases, it is only possible to base your essay on secondary data because conducting primary research can involve time and money. But make sure to state your reasons for choosing one research method over another.

Finally, if you cannot find a sufficient number of sources for your research question, you can alter it with your supervisor’s help.

Choosing the Supervisor

Here are some suggestions on how to choose an advisor

• If you are unsure about who you would like to work with, create a list of potential advisors.
• The supervisor should be familiar with your topic.
• Pick an advisor who would get the best out of you.
• An advisor who is patient with you would not mind reviewing several drafts of your essay and providing feedback.
• It would be best if you were comfortable discussing ideas with them.
• The supervisor should know you well personally because their assessment will contribute towards your final EE score. A teacher who does not know you well may not assess you fairly.
• Simply having your favourite teacher as an advisor may not be a good idea because they may not be familiar with the topic.
• Check whether your school requires the advisor to sign a consent form and make the necessary arrangements.

Structure of an Extended Essay

The extended essay follows the standard essay structure , including the introduction , main body , and conclusion. However, always check with your supervisor about the structure you must follow to avoid complications later.

Your supervisor will provide the necessary guidance and advice to support you throughout the research and writing process.

The project includes up to three reflection rounds with the assigned supervisor, with the final round consisting of an interview, also known as the viva voce.

The extended essay and the reflection meetings provide a much-needed impetus, especially to those required to pass an interview assessment for a place at university and before acceptance for employment.

There are six required components of an extended essay structure:

The title page is where you state the research question you set out to address, the subject you are studying, your school name, your name, total word count of the essay, and category (for language essays).

Contents Page

This is where you must list the heading and the subheadings with corresponding page numbers. All pages should be numbered using the Microsoft page numbering feature.

Introduction

The extended essay’s introduction should provide a brief background to the research question, thesis statement , and the central argument presented in the essay.

This is where you present your arguments, evaluation, comparison, discussion, and analysis of the subject matter. This section’s structure varies according to the subject of the essay, but the supporting evidence should accompany every piece of information.

The conclusion section should relate to the thesis statement, the overall scope of the research, and the line of argument taken. It should also reflect any open questions, research limitations, and unexplained problems.

References and Bibliography

A list of academic sources used is provided in the required citation style at the end of the essay. The citation style you need to follow varies subject to subject, but make sure you consistently use it throughout the essay.

The deadline you Need to Meet

Your school will let you know the deadline for the extended essay assignment. Each school has a different official IB deadline. You will have a year to complete the essay, but unfortunately, most students leave their essay to the last week before the deadline.

अंत में यह जानना भी अत्यधिक आवश्यक है कि निबंध कितने प्रकार के होते हैं। मोटे तौर निबंध को निम्नलिखित श्रेणियों में रखा जाता है-

वर्णनात्मक निबंध - इस तरह के निबंधों में किसी घटना, वस्तु, स्थान, यात्रा आदि का वर्णन किया जाता है। इसमें त्योहार, यात्रा, आयोजन आदि पर लेखन शामिल है। इनमें घटनाओं का एक क्रम होता है और इस तरह के निबंध लिखने आसान होते हैं।

विचारात्मक निबंध - इस तरह के निबंधों में मनन-चिंतन की अधिक आवश्यकता होती है। अक्सर ये किसी समस्या – सामाजिक, राजनीतिक या व्यक्तिगत- पर लिखे जाते हैं। विज्ञान वरदान या अभिशाप, राष्ट्रीय एकता की समस्या, बेरोजगारी की समस्या आदि ऐसे विषय हो सकते हैं। इन हिंदी निबंधों (hindi nibandh) में विषय के अच्छे-बुरे पहलुओं पर विचार व्यक्त किया जाता है और समस्या को दूर करने के उपाय भी सुझाए जाते हैं।

भावात्मक निबंध - ऐसे निबंध जिनमें भावनाओं को व्यक्त करने की अधिक स्वतंत्रता होती है। इनमें कल्पनाशीलता के लिए अधिक छूट होती है। भाव की प्रधानता के कारण इन निबंधों में लेखक की आत्मीयता झलकती है। मेरा प्रिय मित्र, यदि मैं डॉक्टर होता जैसे विषय इस श्रेणी में रखे जा सकते हैं।

इसके साथ ही विषय वस्तु की दृष्टि से भी निबंधों को सामाजिक, आर्थिक, सांस्कृतिक, खेल, विज्ञान और प्रौद्योगिकी जैसी बहुत सी श्रेणियों में बाँटा जा सकता है।

जे न मित्र दुख होंहि दुखारी, तिन्हिं बिलोकत पातक भारी।

यानि कि जो व्यक्ति मित्र के दुख से दुखी नहीं होता है, उनको देखने से बड़ा पाप होता है।

हिंदी या मातृभाषा पर निबंध लिखते समय भारतेंदु हरिश्चंद्र की पंक्तियों का प्रयोग करने से चार चाँद लग जाएगा-

निज भाषा उन्नति अहै, सब उन्नति को मूल

बिन निज भाषा-ज्ञान के, मिटत न हिय को सूल।

प्रासंगिकता और अपने विवेक के अनुसार लेखक निबंधों में ऐसी सामग्री का उपयोग निबंध को प्रभावी बनाने के लिए कर सकते हैं। इनका भंडार तैयार करने के लिए जब कभी कोई पंक्ति या उद्धरण अच्छा लगे, तो एकत्रित करते रहें और समय-समय पर इनको दोहराते रहें।

Have you asked your teacher if they have any past EEs you could look at? That would be the first place I'd look. Otherwise, keep searching on the internet. There is bound to be something. We won't Google for you, but try different search terms like "Hindi B extended essay sample" or "Hindi extended essay examples." If you can't find anything, you could also look up an EE also done in a foreign language (you can use an English B extended essay) and look at how they structured their paper, as the marking guidelines and criteria are still the same (just the language is different).

The IB Extended Essay is a 4,000-word paper that asks you to immerse yourself in research and academic writing. A required part of the IB program, the Extended Essay is a chance to dig deep into a topic that fascinates you.

Although it’s no small task, the IB Extended Essay is an opportunity to gain practical research and writing skills that will come in handy again in college. As you write, you’ll learn how to:

• Identify credible sources
• Formulate a research question and limit your scope of research
• Communicate ideas to an audience
• Develop a well-supported argument

The IB Extended Essay is largely an independent, self-directed project, but don’t worry—the IB program doesn’t throw you into the deep end. You do get to select a mentor (usually a teacher at your school) to help guide you through the process. As you write, you’ll be required to meet with your mentor three times. As part of your final evaluation, your mentor will interview you in a final reflection section called a viva voce . During the viva voce, your mentor will check for plagiarism and malpractice, ask you to reflect on challenges and difficulties, and prompt you to discuss what you’ve learned through the research and writing process. Your mentor will then generate a report that factors into your final grade.

1) Pick something you’re passionate about

As you can see from the titles above, the IB Extended Essay is a great place to delve into a niche topic that fascinates you. Since you’ll be spending many months on this essay, you’ll want to pick a topic you genuinely enjoy spending time learning about. It’s also smart to choose something you’ve already learned about in your IB classes so that you have a strong foundation of knowledge to start with. In music class, do you love pondering why music makes us feel a certain way? Maybe an essay about music theory will keep your gears turning. Do you come alive trying to solve seemingly impossible problems in physics class? Now’s your chance to put those equations into action.

Since this essay is all about your academic interests, it’s also a good idea to pick a topic that’s relevant to what you plan to study in college. Selecting a relevant topic will provide you with significant exposure to the field and will also give you something meaningful to talk about in your college admissions essays.

2) Limit your scope

What’s the meaning of life? Why do wars happen? What is time? Some questions are just way too big to answer, and your IB Extended Essay is not a good place to tackle expansive, philosophical questions. Instead, think of this essay as a place to investigate one piece of a big question. If, let’s say, you’re generally interested in what helps women reach positions of leadership in business, this is a good place to examine how one or a few companies approach this issue. Or, if you’re interested in studying what inspires surrealist painters, you’ll want to pick one or a few painters to research, likely all from the same time period. For both these topics, you’d need a whole textbook to tackle the full question, but limiting your scope will make it much easier to write a clear and cohesive 4,000 words.

On the other hand, it’s possible to narrow your focus too much. It would be impossible, for example, to write 4,000 words about a single sentence in a novel. Make sure you talk about scope early and often with your mentor. Together, you can find the perfect Goldilocks scope for your project that’s not too big and not too small.

3) Choose a good mentor

Speaking of mentors, choosing wisely will help you enormously as you embark on your IB Extended Essay. You’ll want to make sure you choose someone with existing knowledge in your research topic. Your English teacher may be able to give you great writing advice, for example, but they won’t be able to guide your research and scope if you’re writing about marine animals or modern dance.

Before you approach a teacher, make sure you have at least one topic idea (or even a few ideas) in mind so that you can make sure they’ll be a good fit to supervise your project. When you meet with them, find out what their mentorship style is like. Make sure they’ll have time to read several drafts of your essays, meet with you a few times, and give you feedback. Some IB schools will require your IB Extended Essay mentor to sign an agreement form too, so make sure you find out what paperwork is required in advance.

4) Get organized, way organized

The IB Extended Essay is not something you can crank out the night before it’s due. The essay is meant to be a substantive, in-depth, thoughtful, and thoroughly researched analysis, and Rome simply isn’t built in a day. This might be the longest paper you’ve written to date, and this project might require more research than you’ve been asked to do before. Timelines vary by school, but you’ll likely spend between eight months and a year working on your IB Extended Essay. So, how will you pull it all off? For these 8-12 months, organization will be your guiding light. We recommend you:

• Get started early. If your essay is due November of your senior year, start generating topic ideas during your junior year right after winter break.
• Create a long-view schedule for yourself. What will you accomplish each month of your process?
• Give yourself deadlines. Once you choose a mentor, suggest 2-3 draft deadline dates so that you will be held accountable throughout the writing process.
• Find a note-taking system that works for you. You’ll be reading many articles and books and it’s hard to keep track of all your sources. As you finish reading a text, type up important quotes and a few notes explaining how it connects to your topic and to your other texts.

5)Write a messy first draft

Writing never comes out perfect the first time, even for New York Times bestselling authors and the most experienced researchers. In your first draft, give yourself permission to get all your thoughts out, no matter how unstructured or rambling they are. Call this your brainstorming draft. When you’re ready to revisit it, see what patterns emerge, what common ideas you can group together, what beginning buds of ideas you can make bloom into full-fledged analysis.

6) Communicate for an audience

When you’re used to producing writing that only your teacher reads, it can be hard to remember to write for an audience. But at the end of the day, writing is communication , and the best writing is clear and thorough communication that anyone could pick up and read. For your IB Extended Essay, you’ll want to remember that many people will be reading your final essay, and not all of them will be experts in the niche topic you choose to study. Ask yourself: how can I explain my research to an audience who doesn’t already agree with my analysis?

To communicate to an audience, you’ll want to:

• Provide lots of general background information on your topic.
• Don’t assume your reader is familiar with your sources. Introduce them as if they’re guest speakers about to walk up to a podium and deliver a lecture.
• After including quotes, facts, and figures, be sure to explain what those sources mean in your own words and how they connect to your bigger-picture argument.
• Don’t assume your arguments are self-evident. In this essay, communicating for an audience means supplying ongoing interpretation and analysis, even if it feels like you’re explaining the obvious. Your reader isn’t on your research journey with you, so your points might not be so obvious to your reader.

Although your IB Extended Essay provides a report that factors into your grade, your essay will also be assessed by external examiners the IB. Per the IB Extended Essay Rubric , essays are graded on a scale from 0 to 34 based on 5 different criteria:

• Criterion A: Focus and Method (6 points maximum)
• Criterion B: Knowledge and Understanding (6 points maximum)

The extended essay is one of the mandatory requirements of the IB. Another document that also needs to be submitted with the extended essay is RPPF or the reflections on planning and progress form. Many students find this extremely confusing. Students can find themselves thinking in all directions when asked to ‘reflect.’ It seems like they are told to do something that is completely out of scope.

The best part about a reflection form is that it allows students to think in a certain direction, which is again very important to help them go through what was required of them and what they have done by far. 

Like with IB TOK essay PPF , to some students, EE RPPF seems very challenging because it requires thorough research to be done. Like with TK PPD , it also requires students to be fully vigilant with what they are going, delving into the details of everything that is required from that end.

What is an Extended essay planning form 

The RPPF is a form in which students are required to write three reflections. This is a total of 500 words that they have to write, in which they have to slowly work their way through writing what they have understood here. The main idea is to write about what they found out in this and what they thought of the whole process. Another idea here is for the examiner to gauge the direction in which the student is thinking.

The whole extended essay aims to teach students how to research and write an analysis. This can only be done well when they slowly analyze and understand things in the best way possible. In this form, they are required to share their responses about what they think, and that is the most important when it comes to an understanding the student’s thought process behind what they are doing. 

In this form, students are expected to be able to show their intellectual and personal growth. They are expected to talk about how actively they are engaged in the whole process and what they have learnt through it. they are expected to show how they have grown as learners and what skills they have learned here. These skills include critical thinking skills, decision making skills, general research skills, referencing skills and time management skills as well.

On the whole, it gauges the students’ way of doing things in the best way possible. The idea is to understand how well the student is working their way through things.

First Reflection 

This section needs to be around 140 to 170 words in total. In this reflection, you need to talk about how you came to choosing your topic. The first part of the extended essay is to choose a topic that you think you can work on. You need to take the examiner through the whole process so that they understand what went behind all of that. Then you also have to give reasons for what you did and why. After that, you have to give more information about the possible sources and methods that you used.

Furthermore, you also have to talk about what you expect to learn or achieve from this topic. Sharing ideas about how you think you should explore the topic further is also one of the most important things here. This helps the examiner understand the kind of road map that you had in your mind after you selected this topic. You can also touch upon any challenges that you faced throughout. Anything else that you can talk about that highlights how engaged you were through the whole process would also be idea to add here. 

Interim Reflection 

This is the section that you should complete after the first reflection is done. This can also be around 150 words in total. Here, you touch upon the research that you have already done. You also need to touch upon what you have already learned here and why that is important.

Apart from that, you also talk about some new things that you have discovered through this process. If you have slightly tweaked your research question also here, then you should also mention that in the best way possible.

You can also touch upon the progress in the timeline and how well you are doing on this by far. Then you also touch upon any arguments that you think are very important here. If there are any challenges that you have faced here, then you also talk about those. If there is anything that you feel will help you show how engaged you are through the process, then you can also highlight that here. 

Final Reflection 

This is the last part of the reflection that you have to work on. This can again be of around 150 words. Here, you have to talk about the personal relevance that this topic has to you. When you do that, it helps you learn so much about the topic, and also helps the examiner learn more about who you are and how this has helped you further.

It shows the examiner how you can grow as a learner and how working on this topic has further allowed you to do just that. If there is anything else that you think can add value to this section, then you can add that as well.

Remember that the idea is to show the examiner how involved you are in the whole process. So you must make sure that you do that. This is most integral to help you get done with things in the best way.

You need to submit this form along with the extended essay on the portal. This is an imperative part so you must make sure that you do it diligently. At this level, I can create simple sentences with some added detail; such sentences help create VARIETY.

At the Intermediate Low level, simple sentences are enhanced by use of prepositional phrases, helping verb usage, as well as some adverbs and a variety of adjectives.

I generally create independent sentences (ideas) that can be moved around without affecting the overall meaning of the response. There are still a number of errors in my response, but I have fairly good control of more basic sentences. I am feeling more confident in using different structures and expanding vocabulary and taking more risks with my responses.

At this level, I can now create enough language to show groupings of ideas.

My thoughts are loosely connected and cannot be moved around without affecting meaning.

I can also create a few sentences with complexity and am able to use some transition words.  I am also able to use more than just simple present tense, but often make mistakes when I try to use other tenses.

My vocabulary use is expanding and I am able to use more than the usual, high frequency or most common vocabulary. I feel that I am able to create new language on my own and communicate my everyday needs without too much difficulty.

एक दिन पहले मेरा दोसत अलासका गया था। अलासका मे उसने बताया कि बहुत ठनड थी। उसने बतायान कि वह अपनी जैकिट नही लेके आया था। वहै वहं वहांकी सबसे बडी चटान पे भी चडा है। वह अलासका मे बहुत मज़े करके आया है। पर अनतो उसने अपने लाता और पिता जी को यह अलासका जाने कीबात आज तक नही बताई है।

At this level, I have good control of the language and feel quite confident about an increasing range of topics.

There are still some occasional errors in my language production, but that does not hinder my ability to communicate what I need to share.

I can use circumlocution to explain or describe things for which I do not know specific vocabulary or structures. I can understand and use different time frames and am just beginning to develop the ability to switch most time frames with accuracy. I can use transition words and concepts with some ease. My language has a more natural flow, but I still may have some unnatural pauses or hesitations.

मेरा मित्र भारत घुमने गया था. उसे अनेक नई स्थान देखने को मिले. उसे भारत की भाषा सिखने को मिली. उसे नयी जगह देखना बहुत रोमानचक लगता है. भारत मे जाकर उसने काफी कुछ ऐसा किया जो वह कही और न कर पाता. उसने भारत के प्राचीन स्थान देखे जैसेकी दिल्ली, बोमबे आदी. उसने वहा का खाना भी चखा. उसने बहुत सी यादगार चीजे जैसेकि घुढसवारी, त्रेकींग, आदी भी किया. उसका यह सफर वह नही भुलेगा.

At this level my response contains a number of complexities with higher degree of accuracy.

Such language allows me to address each aspect of the prompt more completely and with more depth of meaning.

I am able to use Advanced vocabulary or Advanced terms, conjugations etc. with confidence. I feel that I can create natural flow using as much detail and descriptive language as possible to create a clear picture. Errors with more complex structures may still occur. My ability to switch time frames begins to increase in accuracy.

मेरे दोस्त तन्वी ने पिछले सप्ताह ताजमहल घूम कर आयी. वह उधर अपने परिवार के साथ गयी थी. उसने मुझे अपने सफर के बारे में सब बताया. वह गाड़ी से आगरा गयी थी और वहां उसने लाल किला और अकबर की दरगाह भी देखी। वहां उसे एक बन्दर भी मिला जिसने उसकी चुन्नी छीन ली और अपनी बंदरिया को दे दी. उसने वहां बहुत सरे कबूतर भी देखे. उसने अपने लिए चूड़ियां भी खरीदी. वह मेरे लिए वहां से पेड़े भी लायी. उसके माँ बाप को भी वह जगह बहुत पसंद आयी. उन सबने मिलके बहुत मजे करे. मुझे उम्मीद है की मैं जल्द ही उनके साथ ताज महल वह पूरा आगरा घूमूँ

At this level my response demonstrates my ease with the language.

I am able to create a response which not only addresses each aspect of the prompt, but delves into each point with clarity and concise language.

I am able to incorporate a number of more complex structures as well as Advanced vocabulary and Advanced phrases with a higher degree of accuracy throughout the majority of the response.

The language I create has a natural flow due to the way I incorporate a variety of patterns and complexities into my response. My response shows my ability to create language that has sophistication of language skills and syntactical density. My ability to switch time frames accurately is evident, if called for in the prompt.

मेरी दोस्त रति दो दिन पहले अपनी गोवा की यात्रा से वापिस लौटी। उसने मुझे आज ही उसकी सफर की कहानी बताई। वह दिवाली की छुट्टीयाँ में गोवा गई। उसने हमारे शहर बैंगलौर से यात्रा शुरू की। वह अपने परिवार के साथ बैंगलौर से हुबली रेल द्वारा गई। उसके पिताजी ने पहले से एक गाड़ी बुक की थी। जब वे हुबली पहुँचे तो स्टेशन के बाहर एक टैक्सी उनका इंतज़ार कर रही थी। वहाँ से उन्होंने हुबली से गोवा जाने का 5 घंटे का सफर शुरू किया। वे शाम के 5 बजे गोवा पहुँचे। वहाँ वे ताज सराय में रूके थे। ताज सराय अति सुंदर था। वहाँ एक प्राईवेट बीच भी था। रति और उसके परिवार को वहाँ बहुत मज़ा आया। दूसरे दिन वे सवेरे जल्दी उठके कैलंगुटी बीच गए। बीच का नज़ारा बहुत लुभावना था। वहाँ पैरासेलिंग करने के लिए लंबी कतार लगी हुई थी। रति के भाई को भी पैरासेलिंग करनी थी। पैरासेलिंग कराने के लिए उन्हें 10 और सैलानियों के साथ एक नाव में बिठाया गया। वहाँ से वे तकरीबन 20 कीलोमीटर समुद्र के अंदर गए। रति को बहुत सारे, रंग-बिरंगे मछलियाँ दिखाई देने लगे। उसके पिताजी को डर लगने लगा। उसकी माँ और उसका भाई उत्साहित थे। रति और उसकी माँ एक साथ गए। उनके बाद उसके पिताजी और उसका भाई गए। उन्हे एक पैराशूट से बांध दिया गया और उन्हें हवा में फैका गया। वे हवा में उड़ने लगे। वहाँ से उन्हे बहुत सारी डाल्फिनें दिखीं। वें बहुत उत्साहित हुए व उनका डर खत्म हो गया। रति व उसके परिवार को बहुत आनंद मिला। वे चार दिन बाद बैंगलौर वापिस लौटे।

Topic, subject, question and title.

All Extended Essays must have four things: a topic, a subject, a research question (RQ) and a title. It is recommended to think about them in that order (though may people reverse topic and subject). The IB site has many examples of these per subject. Here is an example from physics. 

When thinking about your Extended Essay, start with a topic that interests you. After all, you're going to spend months on the topic. Topics should be inspired from real-world problems or interesting primary sources, such as works of art or literature. You may be following an interesting topic in the news. You may have covered a topic in class that captured your interest. Your topic may or may not fit neatly into an IBDP subject. It may fall under two subjects! If it does not fit into an IBDP subject at all, you may have to find a new topic. 

Extended Essays are registered by subject, as they are marked by a subject-specific examiner. Your subject must be taken from the list of Diploma Programme subjects on offer (see list below). Your essay does not have to be in one of the six subjects you are studying for the diploma at school. However, you may penalise yourself if your essay is not in a subject you are studying, because you lack background knowledge in this subject area. If you are not taking Psychology, it is not recommended that you write your essay in this subject. Language and Literature students, however, may easily submit an essay in Literature and Performance, if they are exploring a play. It is best to work with a supervisor who teaches the subject. He or she can also help you 'fit' your topic into the subject. Be sure to write your subject on the cover page of your essay. If you are writing an essay in Groups 1 or 2 (Studies in Language and Literature and Language Acquisition), be sure to include the category on the cover page as well.

Research question

Writing a good research question (RQ) is an art form, which is why this Support Site dedicates several pages to the art of writing a good RQ. In brief, the RQ is your line of inquiry or your thin red line which runs through everything you research and argue. What's more, it offers 'scope'. Most students start with a research question that is too broad, such as 'How has advertising evolved?' and narrow it down to something more focused, such as 'How do the Heinz Ketchup ads from the 1960s in the US reflect a backlash to cultural conservatism from the 1950s?' The process of narrowing the RQ takes time. You may change your RQ several times while researching and even writing your EE. That's OK. Make your learning curve visible on your RPPF . Include your research question on the cover page of your essay. 

Every Extended Essay, regardless of the subject, must have a title. Your title does not have to be elaborate or overly sophisticated. It should include many of the same words from the research question and topic. Be sure to include your title on your cover page.   

Under which Area of Knowledge (AOK) does your essay's subject fall? Consider the 'knowledge framework' from this AOK. How is knowledge traditionally acquired in this subject? What is the history of this subject? Talk to your TOK teacher about your EE as well!

Are you thinking of making a stratigic subject choice for your EE? You're not the first. Google 'IB Statistical Bulletin' to find the latest report. You will see which subjects tend to award higher and lower marks. Are you going to choose your subject based on your interests? Good! You're more likely to maintain focus on this project.

Learner profile

An IB learner is knowledgeable, and 'knowledge' is part of Criterion B. But do not be fooled. The EE is not about how much you know. It's about what you do with what you know. When writing your EE focus more on 'thinker', 'inquirer and 'communicator'.

• Sample History EE Reflection

I was attracted to Anna Comnena's The Alexiad as a result of some extra readings which formed part of my IB History course (Crusades). As the first female historian, she stands in a unique place in terms of historiography, something which appealed to me as both a woman and budding historian. I was initially considering writing about her accounts of the First Crusade but quickly found the topic to be far too wide in scope. A reading of Paul Magdalino's article "The Pen of the Aunt" helped refocus me on the issue of historical purpose, i.e., why she wrote the history she did. I have now allocated time to reading historical accounts of Manuel I's reign to decide how closely the events Anna mentions in her history of her father's reign (Alexius) so as to validate my current hypothesis-  that Anna intended the work as a celebratory account of her father so as to cast a negative light on the rule of her nephew Manuel I. My current list includes Runciman, France, Macrides, Christomides, and Hill.

Reflection Two- Interim Stage

This reflection session will usually fall somewhere in the middle to latter half of your EE process, usually before the first draft is completed.

Examples of Reflection Two

I was finding it hard to come up with a satisfactory counter to the question of accuracy and authenticity which feature prominently in modern readings of her work. Historians ranging from Edward Gibbon and John France to the more direct Howard-Johnson paper which completely challenges her authorship effectively negated my hypothesis entirely. Using Magdalino and Hill as a focus point, I re-read key sections of The Alexiad and mapped out her account against the policital events of Manuel I's reign and quickly discovered some interesting overlaps (building works, military campaigns, relations with the West, etc.). Though occasionally obscure and subtle, the criticisms emerge by means of an unspoken comparison which Byzantine readers of her account would have well understood. This approach is providing me with a suitable counter to the aforementioned criticisms. I have also begun structuring my work accordingly with sections devoted to historical context followed by a section on The Alexiad which compares and contrasts events from Alexius' time with those of Manuel's. I am considering a chapter on the historiographical tradition of Byzantium but may integrate it into the main body in the end.

Reflection Three- Looking Back

This final reflection should be written BEFORE the Viva Voce meeting. It should:

• Offer your final reflections on the process
• Discuss any achievements realized or challenges overcome
• Discuss elements that allowed you to complete the task that may not be readily apparent in the essay itself.
• Discuss any relevant ATL's (Approaches to Learning) that you have developed through the process & be ready to provide good examples.

I am very pleased with how the essay has turned out. Skills wise, I had no problems with referencing which I picked up quickly though integrating source analysis did prove a challenge at times due to my narrative tendencies. I believe I've been able to challenge the orthodox interpretations of Anna's work as a piece of fantasy fiction at the hands of a disgruntled woman by showing that Anna was effectively using one of the few weapons still permitted her in her diminished political state- the power of words- to criticize the existing leadership. Hill's works proved of particular use to me as they examined female power in a broader context and thus gave me a framework for interpreting what Anna was able to do within the context of her time.
