In July and August 1975, the Cabinet and the Parliament approved Indira Gandhi's last proposal to declare an emergency, which had been approved by the President of India.

It was based on the argument that the Indian state faced pressing internal and external threats. All the fundamental rights were suspended at that time including freedom of speech and expression which led to protests and chaos in the country. After the emergency period was over, Congress lost the elections and was replaced by Janata Party led by Moraji Desai. But, Gandhi again came to power in 1980.

In 1975, when she was in tenure, one crucial decision came to light when opposition parties spoke against the judgment of Justice Sinha. So, to neutralise the effect of the country’s opposition, she declared a national emergency.

The state of emergency resulted in her defeat in 1977. She remained silent for a few years, and in January 1980, she came back as the Prime Minister of India during the midterm poll.

National Emergency in India and Indira Gandhi

After her success, in the war against Pakistan, in 1972, her New Congress Party group succeeded in the State Legislative election. But, the opposition parties filed a case against her, blaming that she violated the election laws.

Indira Gandhi made all the opposition party’s leaders imprisoned. She couldn’t accept the decision and imposed the National Emergency. During this period, the Freedom of Expression for the newspaper was abolished.

Many new laws were enacted that limited personal freedoms. She also implemented many infamous rules like large-scale sterilisation as a birth control measure.

Second Term of Indira Gandhi

When she came to power again, she faced many challenges. She became restless as the demand for ‘Khalistan’ was rising, resulting in the attack of the Golden Temple. So, she instructed the army to carry out rescue operations and protect the temple from the terrorists.

Indira Gandhi was a woman with vision, courage and foresight. She was a woman who made history as the Prime Minister of India.

Death of Indira Gandhi

In the early phase of the 1980s, there was building tension regarding the disintegration of India. The other religions, especially Sikhs, threatened to disturb the country’s unity. They started a huge outcry and moved to the Sun Temple in Amritsar to launch an attack against the Government.

Indira Gandhi: Autocratic Leader of India Analytical Essay

Introduction, characteristics, which are unique to her leadership style, the effects of her role in societal changes, reference list.

Indira Gandhi was born of Priyadarshini Nehru in 1917 in Allahabad province of India. She was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru who was India’s first prime minister. Indira had the chance to enjoy excellent education by going to Somerville College, as well as the Oxford University from where she finalized her college education. Indira was later married to Feroze Gandhi between the years 1942-1960.

The Nehru family was a political family in India that produced political leaders for India. When her mother died in 1936, she became the only person closest to her father. This case enabled her to rub shoulders with people in leadership and the diplomatic world thus growing up as an experienced person in politics and diplomacy.

After her father’s death, she was elected as president for India’s National Congress. She subsequently assumed the post of the minister for information. Indira became “India’s prime minister in 1966 to 1977 and from 1980 to 1984” (Steinberg, 2005, p.760).

She was assassinated in 1984 by her Sikh bodyguard in revenge for her ordering the invasion of the Golden temple, which was a Sikh holy place to flush out separists hiding in the temple. Indira was considered the iron woman of India for the way she ruled the country with an Iron fist.

Indira grew up as a hardened child whose parents were always away from home attending independence strategy meetings. Thus, she had to learn to overcome her fear of her parents being away by developing into a tough strong-headed girl. When Indira took over as the prime minister of India, she showed her knack for independent mindedness by sacking some of her father’s loyalists from the government who were viewed as powerful persons in the Indian political circles.

Indira grew India’s profile by making sure that India remained the powerhouse of East Asia by assimilating small neighboring countries like Sikkim to become India’s 23rd state. She provided leadership by securing India as one state by silencing separist groups that were trying to fight for their separation from India. According to Steinberg (2005), Indira comes out as a multifaceted character in such a way that she has different characteristics that make up her personality (p.755).

Among her characteristics, she was ambitious, reticent, contentious, and dominating. When Indira’s mother died, she took over as her father’s hostess. For a long time, she was viewed as not politically ambitious. This misunderstanding enabled her to horn her skills in politics and diplomacy by learning from the extremely best that ruled at the time. She was able to combine her different roles thus being able to execute them as demanded.

Although she was a mother, wife, and at the same time her father’s hostess, Indira played all these roles as demanded. Though viewed as a shy person during those days, she turned out differently when she became the prime minister. As a prime minister, she turned out to be a forceful and sometimes ruthless person who would do anything to push a cause in which she believes.

Immediately after taking over as the prime minister, she purged some of her father’s loyalists as a way of entrenching herself in leadership thus taking control of the party. She subsequently took total control over the leadership of the country. Every move she made was meant for self-preservation. In 1975, she declared a state of emergency, which led to her popularity ratings slumping and subsequently leading to her removal as the prime minister.

Her dominating nature led her into making India a dominating figure among the Asian states in East Asia. Thus, she is credited with the creation of Bangladesh, which was previously part of Pakistan. As a child, Indira pretended to be Joan of Arc. She would tell her aunt that she would lead her people one day the way Joan of Arc did (Malhotra, 1989, p. 37).

As a reticent person, she hid most of her feelings to the outside world though she acted in an aggressive nature when things went overboard. This case can be attributed to her reaction to the Sikh separist group that was hiding in the golden temple. She ordered the invasion of the temple, which is a sheer sacred place to the Sikh community. This attempt led to the death of over 450 people during the purge, which infuriated the Sikh community to the core.

Unfortunately, the scenario further led to her death after she was shot by her most trusted Sikh bodyguard in revenge to the desecration of the sacred place. Indira Gandhi could be described as a manipulative person though in a hugely suppressed way. This trait is evident in her relationship with media. During her early days as a prime minister and the time, which she was fighting to take total control of the party, Indira embraced the media so much that she was seen to be an open person.

This claim was purely for consolidating her support among the people’s support, which she well knew the media could deliver. After gaining her foothold, she shunned the media after declaring a state of emergency while time purging the media at the same as a way of self preservation because she knew that the media could break her the same way it made her. This leadership style can be defined as autocratic due to its dictatorial tendencies.

Indira Gandhi can be credited with so many changes especially in the Asian nations specifically the East Asia nations that bordered India. For a start, she led to the creation of the Bangladesh state after a weeklong negotiation with the Pakistani prime minister.

This activity happened after the Pakistani government had led a purge against the states around the Himalayan Mountains that were revolting thus leading to an influx of over ten million refugees running into India. This part of her controlling character was spilling over into her leadership style.

Her ambition was to have India as the dominant power in that region. Thus, she is believed to have sponsored the revolt before going ahead to negotiate for a state for them. This attempt is manipulative and a strong leadership style. Her nature of leadership led to India developing nuclear technology thus leading to the nuclear race between India and Pakistan people who are known to be India’s competitors.

India’s diplomatic prowess led her into negotiating a deal with her Pakistani counterpart in 1971 that resolved to solve the Kashmir dispute through peaceful means. This step ensured that there was peace between the two nations in the middle of their differences. She also secured her country’s interest by ensuring that it was not influenced by ideologies that could hurt it.

To this end, she rebuffed China’s political ideologies and influences by locking it out of countries such as Nepal that was inside India’s borders (Crossette, 2008, p. 40). Indira is credited with changing society through her campaign for the green revolution. The green revolution was started in India in the late 1960’s as a way of making the country self-sustaining in food production.

This achievement enabled the country to produce enough food for its population as well as for export. Before the green revolution, just about 80000 hectares of land in the Punjab province were under modern method of agricultural production thus making the country insufficient in its production of food for its population.

When Indira inspired the green revolution, the country presently boasts of over six million hectares of land under food crop production making the country an exporter of food (International Food Policy Research Institute, 2002, p. 2) because Indira had the mettle to push for what she believed. The green revolution led to growth of the economy by creating jobs for the masses, as well as leading to food security for the nation.

The per capita income of India doubled from between the year 1975-1995 thereby cutting poverty levels in the rural populations by two thirds. The overall nutrition levels of the nation improved through better nutrition thus substantially improving the life expectancy of the nation.

Though many people viewed Indira Gandhi as an autocratic leader and even christened the iron woman of India, she should better be described as a transformational leader due to the changes and stability she brought to India as a nation and to the regions surrounding India. Her long hold on to the Indian premiership brought about stability to the nation and meaningful long-term changes to the nation.

She had Morarji Desai as the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister. From the very beginning, her political movements were scanned under the microscope. She was considered as the puppet with no political ability. There was very little room for error.

Indira Gandhi faced fierce opposition from the right-wing leader, Morarji Desai. Congress grabbed a slim majority owing to the rising price of commodities, unemployment, economic stagnation, and food crisis.

To revive the economy, she devaluated the money, which made the business much harder. To mitigate the food crisis, she imported wheat from the United States even after having clashed with them. This decision of her was not accepted pleasantly by the party members.

Iron Lady of Indian Indira Gandhi

Except for Margaret Thatcher of Britain, there was no women leader taller than Indira Gandhi. During her 15 years of rule, she dominated national as well as international scenarios. Her creation of Bangladesh from East Pakistan after the Bangladesh war was a daring act. This act established her as a strong leader all over the world. Indira was born on 19th November 1917 to Kamla Nehru and Jawahar Lal Nehru, first prime minister of independent India, at Anand Bhavan in Allahabad. When she was born she was named Priyadarshini. Her early education took place under the guidance of her parents and grandfather. Later on, she was enrolled at Shantiniketan. But she had to leave Shantiniketan and accompany her mother to Germany for treatment of tuberculosis. When she completed her schooling, she was admitted to Oxford University in England. On March 26, 1942, Indira Priyadarshini Nehru and Feroze Gandhi got married at Anand Bhavan in Allahabad. Her political life started when she joined the female members of the household in nursing the victims of police brutality. She constituted her first political brigade known as ‘Vanar Sena’ and worked as an auxiliary group to Congress Party. Politics was in Indira Gandhi’s blood. She actively participated in the freedom struggle throughout the pre-independence era. Many times she was sent to jail. Post-independence she got actively involved with her father in the resurrection of the nation. Meanwhile, her relationship with Feroz Gandhi soured. She assumed the role of her father’s official hostess. After the death of her father, when Shri Lal Bhadur Shastri took the reigns of the nation she was allocated Information and Broadcasting ministry. When Shastri died in 1966, the Congress party elected has the Prime Minister. Indira was popular not only with the liberals but also with the minorities such as the Muslims and the Harijan.

Indira Gandhi’s initial stint as prime minister was some less than brilliant. To eradicate poverty, Mrs. Gandhi pursued a forceful policy of land reform in 1969 and placed a ceiling I1 personal income, private property, and corporate profits. She also nationalized the major banks, a bold step amidst a growing rift between herself and the party elders. The Congress expelled her for ‘indiscipline’ on November 12, 1969, an action that split the party into two factions: the Congress (0)—for Organisation— under Morarji Desai and the Congress (R)—for Requisition—under Indira Gandhi. She continued as the Prime Minister with support from communists, Sikhs, and regional parties. She again firmly established herself at the pinnacle of power when she rode to power in the general election of March 1971. Neither Gandhi’s consolidation of power, her authoritative style of administration, nor even her public speaking of radical reforms was enough to meet the deepening economic crisis generated by the massive cost of the 1971 war with Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh. Both Gandhi’s office and character came under severe tests when an all-party had put a No-confidence motion in Parliament and a writ had been issued by the Allahabad High Court invalidating her 1971 election and making her ineligible to occupy her seat for six years. On June 25, 1975: the President declared an Emergency and the government suspended civil rights. The Reign of Terror, as some called it, continued until January 18, 1977, when Gandhi suddenly relaxed the Emergency, announced the next General Elections in March, and released her opponents from prison. With elections, only two months away7both J.P. Narayan and Morarji Desai reactivated the multiparty front, which campaigned as the Janata Party and rode anti-Emergency sentiment to secure a clear majority in the Lok Sabha (House of the People), the lower house of Parliament. And Moraji Desai became India’s fourth Prime Minister (1977-79). But due to factionalism Janta Party government couldn’t last long and general elections were held in January 1980. Gandhi and her party renamed Congress (R) as Congress (1)—I for Indira—campaigned on the slogan ‘Elect a Government That Works!’ and regained power. Secessionist forces in Punjab and in the northeast and the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in December 1979 consumed her energy. She began to involve the armed forces in resolving violent domestic conflicts between 1980 and 1984. In May 1984, Sikh extremists occupied the Golden Temple in Amritsar, converting it into a refuge for terrorists. Gandhi responded in early June when

she launched Operation Blue Star, which killed and Wounded hundreds of soldiers, insurgents, and civilians. A few months later, in October 31, 1984, two of Gandhi’s Sikh bodyguards took revenge by assassinating Gandhi on the grounds of her home. Thus ended the life of the first woman prime minister of India. She emerged as the global leader. A poll by BBC News online has voted Indira Gandhi as the greatest woman in the past 1,000 years. Mrs. Gandhi acquired a formidable international reputation as a ‘Statesman’. She was referred to as the Empress of India as she directed the country towards newer horizons. In fact, she was a global leader during whose tenure India strove extremely well in her international relations.

Essay on “Indira Gandhi”

Indira Gandhi was born on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, the only child of Jawaharlal Nehru, later the first prime minister of India. A graduate of Visva-Bharati University, Bengal, she also studied at the University of Oxford, England. In 1938 she joined the National Congress party and became active in India’s independence movement. In 1942 she married Feroze Gandhi, a Parsi lawyer also active in the party. Shortly after, both were arrested by the British on charges of subversion and spent 13 months in prison. When India won its independence in 1947 and Nehru took office as prime minister, Gandhi became his official hostess. She also served as his confidante on national problems and accompanied him on foreign trips.

In 1955 she was elected to the executive body of the Congress party, becoming a national political figure in her own right; in 1959 she became president of the party for one year. In 1962, during the Chinese-Indian border war, she coordinated civil defense activities. Following the death of her father in May 1964, Gandhi became minister of information and broadcasting in Lal Bahadur Shastri’s government. In this post, she extended broadcasting time, liberalized censorship policies, and approved a television education project in family planning. When Shastri died suddenly in January 1966, Gandhi succeeded him as prime minister.

The following year she was elected to a 5-year term by the parliament members of the dominant Congress party. She led her party to a landslide victory in the national elections of 1971. In 1975 Gandhi was convicted of a minor infraction of the election laws during the 1971 campaign. Maintaining innocence, she charged that the conviction was part of an attempt to remove her from office and, instead of resigning, declared a national state of emergency on June 26. Although her conviction was soon overturned by the Indian Supreme Court, the emergency was continued. Gandhi placed many aspects of life in India under her strict control, and thousands of dissenters were imprisoned. Many saw in these actions the influence of her younger son, Sanjay Gandhi, a political neophyte on whom she relied more and more for assistance. Hoping to demonstrate popular support for her regime, which critics contended was undermining India’s democratic system, Gandhi called a general election in March 1977; she lost her seat in parliament, and the Congress party was defeated. In the elections of January 1980, however, she made a spectacular comeback and was able to form a new majority government. When Sanjay died in a plane crash that June, she began grooming her older son, Rajiv Gandhi, as her successor. On October 31, 1984, after she had moved vigorously to suppress Sikh insurgents, she was shot to death by Sikh members of her security guard.

Indira Gandhi also played an instrumental role in India’s nuclear program, leading the country towards nuclear self-sufficiency. Her government also initiated several measures to promote the welfare of the underprivileged, including the nationalization of coal mines and the introduction of land reforms.

However, her tenure as Prime Minister was not without controversy. She was accused of authoritarianism and violating civil liberties during the Emergency period from 1975 to 1977. Her decision to launch Operation Blue Star in 1984 to remove militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar also led to widespread protests and ultimately her assassination by her own bodyguards.

Despite the controversies, Indira Gandhi remains a towering figure in Indian politics and a symbol of women’s empowerment in the country. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of women to enter the political arena and make their mark.

Essay On Indira Gandhi In Hindi 500
