It is incredible how much rubbish we throw into the garbage bin. It always seems to be full. The smell can be quite strong. So we are very thankful to the garbage collectors who come and remove the garbage.
They norm ally come thrice a week. If they miss a day or two, then the garbage bins in my neighborhood overflow onto the road. This invites stray dogs and other scavengers. Only when the garbage truck comes again, is the problem taken care of.
So we can see how important these garbage collectors are.
When they come, they usually make a lot of noise. Often they are moody. We bear them because they are not doing a pleasant job. It is dirty and smelly. Perhaps they are used to it. Nevertheless, they do come regularly to perform an important job. On festive occasions we give them gifts, usually small amounts of money as a token of appreciation for a job well done. Granted, they are noisy, dirty and sometimes cranky, but how else can they behave when they have to do work that most people would not touch? Nobody would like to work as a garbage collector.
Anyhow, someone has to do the dirty job. The least we can do is, to make their job easier by keeping our garbage in proper bins and showing them a little appreciation now and then.

One of the students who collected trash for me, senior Aastha Banga, feels as if our world is one of duplicity, where the wonder of nature coincides with the ugliness of corporate waste and plastic production. “You see all these pretty lakes and hills, and then you see piles of garbage behind buildings and you see McDonald’s leftovers on the street and trash cans being overflowed with plastic bottles,” Banga said.
The US creates over 258 million tons of municipal solid waste annually, an undeniably unethical amount, as excessive waste contributes to the cutting down of rainforests, global warming, depletion of the ozone layer, water/land/air pollution and the death of marine life. Banga values the beauty in life, and she is scared that the world does not share her concern for maintaining the safety of our planet.

We get the opportunity to live with such beauty, and I think we humans don’t appreciate it enough and take it for granted.”
Banga is vice president of the Student Environmental Awareness League (SEAL) at MSMS, an organization aiming to help create change during this global crisis. Since Banga’s membership in it, SEAL has organized cleanups, created initiatives for recycling, and created and delivered many presentations on environmentalism.
Banga, however, fears that her efforts and the efforts of her fellow activists across the world may not be enough. “If we keep going the way we are with excessive plastic production and polluting the environment, this world will soon become unlivable for humans.” Climate scientists say that if global change does not occur, we have 20 years before climate change will plunge us into catastrophe, and the earth will irrevocably overflow with garbage by 2100 .
Banga may fear that her efforts are not enough, but she still makes the efforts regardless, and urges her fellow students to do so as well. Mass consumerism and huge corporations are mainly to blame for the climate and waste crises our planet is experiencing. Legislation to prevent these corporations from producing so much waste has not yet passed as the clock continues to tick for the US.

Also this will helps us to contribute in Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan scheme launched by the government of India.

The smart trash can prototype uses an ESP 32 microcontroller as a system control. Servo to control the trash can cover. The output of DF Player is in the form of thanks to people who throw garbage in its place. Ultrasonic sensors can detect human presence and waste volume and send monitoring results in real time as well as notifications to the blynk application as a notification if the trash can is full.

Because of unavailability of a proper waste tracking and detection system, littered waste remains uncleaned. To overcome this problem, we develop a system where the admin can capture images using a mobile camera and using artificial intelligence, it processes those images and identifies the type of waste present in the image. It also maps the waste locations along with its images on a map. At the end, the admin notifies the nearest garbage collector to clean the waste. Design and Development of River Floating Cleaner
This research aims to design and make floating river cleaner, a floating boat model as automatic garbage collector to counter accumulation of garbage in the lake which has no flow effectively and efficiently. Integrated Hardware Garbage Collection
Garbage collected programming languages, such as Python and C#, have accelerated software development. These modern languages increase productivity and software reliability as they provide high-level data representation and control structures. Modern languages are widely used in software development for mobile, desktop, and server devices, but their adoption is limited in real-time embedded systems. There is clear interest in supporting modern languages in embedded devices as emerging markets, like the Internet of Things, demand ever smarter and more reliable products. Multiple commercial and open-source projects, such as Zerynth and MicroPython, are attempting to provide support. But these projects rely on software garbage collectors that impose high overheads and introduce unpredictable pauses, preventing their use in many embedded applications. These limitations arise from the unsuitability of conventional processors for performing efficient, predictable garbage collection. We propose the Integrated Hardware Garbage Collector (IHGC); a garbage collector tightly coupled with the processor that runs continuously in the background. Further, we introduce a static analysis technique to guarantee that real-time programs are never paused by the collector. Our design allocates a memory cycle to the collector when the processor is not using the memory. The IHGC achieves this by careful division of collection work into single-memory-access steps that are interleaved with the processor’s memory accesses. As a result, our collector eliminates run-time overheads and enables real-time program analysis. The principles behind the IHGC can be used in conjunction with existing architectures. For example, we simulated the IHGC alongside the ARMv6-M architecture. Compared to a conventional processor, our experiments indicate that the IHGC offers 1.5–7 times better performance for programs that rely on garbage collection. The IHGC delivers the benefits of garbage-collected languages with real-time performance but without the complexity and overheads inherent in software collectors.
Development of Water Surface Mobile Garbage Collector Robot
This paper presents a prototype of Water Surface Mobile Garbage Collector Robot built in motivation to educate the people to love and monitor the health of our rivers by collecting the trash themselves using mobile robot. The garbage collector is designed aimed for the cleaning of small-scale lakes, narrow rivers, and drains in Malaysia. The navigation of the robot is controlled using wireless Bluetooth communication from a smartphone application. The performance of the water garbage collector in terms of manoeuvring control efficiency and garbage collection load capacity was tested and evaluated. Based on the experimental results from a swimming pool, it can operate within a 4-metre range and collect 192 grams of small to medium sized recyclable garbage such as food packages, water bottles, and plastics in 10 seconds. It managed to float and navigate on the Panchor River within Bluetooth network range. A strong, lightweight and waterproof material is recommended for use for this water garbage collector. A proximity sensor or image processing technique for detecting garbage on the water surface may be studied and included in the future to enable a fully autonomous manoeuvring control system.
Daily Patterns of Foraging and Aggressive Behaviors in Great-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus) at an Urban Patch with Availability or Absence of Resources
The Great-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus) seems to take advantage of inhospitable environments such as cities. However, it is not yet fully understood how these birds exploit hostile environments to their advantage. Casual observation suggests that this species can obtain resources of biological importance such as food or nesting material from the garbage. As a first approach to the problem, we located a patch outside a residential building in a high-density urban area, where the residents left their trash for pickup. A group of wild Great-tailed grackles was identified as regular visitors. In total, 25 days were recorded at the site (November 2017 - January 2018). Events such as foraging, the number of subjects present at the foraging area, aggressive behaviors between members of the group, and their relation with the presence or absence of the garbage collector truck were registered. The results show a higher number of grackles at the observation site and a higher frequency of foraging behaviors in the presence of garbage collection than in its absence. In its presence, the distribution of foraging during the day follows a normal distribution. In the absence, the distribution shows more variability towards the day. The highest frequency of interactions occurred between two grackles, yet there were records of up to eight subjects. The highest number of aggressions registered took place in the absence of garbage collection than in its presence. Moreover, the focal subject exhibits fewer agonistic behaviors than other group members, a result expected if the producer-scrounger game literature is considered. The outcome is explained in terms of deprivation and availability of resources. Finally, we conclude that grackles can exploit hazardous environments such as cities due to the highly social behaviors exhibited during foraging.

Smart waste management is an approach that utilizes modern technology to manage waste materials in effective, efficient, and economical way. Artificial intelligence offers various approaches which can help to construct smart waste management systems. AI based systems are used to tackle complicated problems, handle uncertainty, and exhibit the efficiency of smart systems. This article aims to conduct systematic literature review on artificial intelligent-based smart waste management systems. In this study, we have identified and analyzed 40 research papers published between the years 2001 to 2021. These papers have proposed various frameworks and smart models for different types of waste management. The main goal of this study is to summarize the findings of selected research papers, provide comprehensive analysis and identify the future research avenues of waste management. This chapter has addressed various waste management domains like municipal solid waste management, smart bin management, domestic waste management, medical waste management, construction and industrial waste management, and so on. Furthermore, categorical representation of most extensively used machine learning and deep learning algorithms along with their contribution have been elaborately discussed as well.

Smart cities integrate multiple mobile or websolutions to build a comfortable human habitation. One of these solutions is to provide an environmentally friendly, efficient and effective garbage management system. The current garbage collection system includes routine garbage trucks doing roundsdaily or weekly, which not only doesn't cover every zone of the city but its completely inefficient use of government resources. The proposed system, where admin manage the garbage app for full online based mointoring and analyze the system. Her admin handle bins, driver, complaints from user and work report from driver. This paper proposes a cost-effective mobile or web based system for the government to utilize available resources to efficiently manage the over whelming amounts of garbage collected each day, while also providing a better solution for the inconvenience of garbage disposal for the citizens. This is done by a driver, app will provide predictive and guide routes generated through for garbage trucks. Then driver update the status of work done will be data collected. An android or web app is developed for the work force and the citizens, which primarily provides the user create complatints available smart bin. I.

This paper proposes an approach for cost-effective mobile or web based system for the government to utilize available resources effectively and to manage the overwhelming amount of garbage collected each day, while also it provides a better solution for the inconvenience of garbage disposal for the citizens. Our approach is Location Based Garbage Management System for Smart City. This is done by an android or web app is developed for the workforce and the citizens, which primarily provides the generated routes for the workforce and finds the nearest available bin, smarted augmented technology complaint system, doorstep disposal of scrap items, monitoring the collection status of daily waste and incentives for motivation enables a cultural shift in segregation of wastes by the citizens.

In Sri Lanka, garbage dumping has long been a problem. The regional organizations have made various attempts to address this issue. But unfortunately, no appropriate action has been taken thus far. As a consequence, there are several environmental issues as well as human health issues, particularly among children. As a result, we have suggested some approaches to resolving these issues so that we can advance the nation. The prime objective of the suggested system is to provide a nation free from waste, and the suggested solutions support this objective as well. The suggested approach will benefit the municipality council in a variety of ways, reducing both labour and capital costs. The proposed system will calculate the amount of garbage that has been piled up effectively, giving truck drivers information that can be tracked via a mobile application. The system will warn pedestrians if they attempt to dump garbage out of the bin and also if they pile particular garbage in a different type of a bin other than designated bin. This will aid road cleaners in efficiently collecting garbage other than focusing more collecting trash from the roads. It will improve the garbage segregation process because the designated types of bins are also kept separately and can be utilized by the local bodies as they require, which helps to achieve our objective of this system I.

One of the challenges to transform and make an Internet of Things (IoT) is in monitoring and managing of the environment. One of the challenges to the local authority is how to monitor the works of employee effective and efficiency in waste management. Waste product collection utilizes the IoT with the technology of sensors that will able to collect the data from a garbage bin. From the finding of this investigation, it can be concluding that through management of collecting data from the volunteer by stakeholders can enhance the visualization of intelligent smart waste management system. This documentation will purpose to the local authority the implementation of smart waste management to provide better services to the public towards smart city applications and improve and increase the city management.

Now days we see that dustbins are put at open places in the urban areas are overflowing because of increment in the waste continuously. It makes unhygienic condition and makes unpleasant smell around the surroundings nature leads in spreading some deadly diseases and human illness. To overcome such issues waste management system is proposed for Smart Cities which are based on Internet of Things (IoT). In this system there are numerous dust bins situated all over the city. It will take minimum efforts to clean all the dustbins over the city by checking whether the dustbins are full or not. Also it detects over weight through the load cell. Control system sends SMS as well as updates of dustbin will be upload on webpage automatically. The term waste management usually relates to all kinds of waste, whether generated during the extraction of raw materials, the processing of raw materials into final products, the consumption of final products, or other human activities, including municipal, agricultural, and social like health care etc. There needs to be system that gives prior information of the filling of the bin that alerts the municipality so that they can clean the bin on time and safeguard the environment.

As the name suggests we are developing an Automatic garbage collection and information gathering system which is based on Image processing as well as on GSM module. The main concept is that a Camera will be placed at every garbage collection point along with load cell sensor at bottom of the garbage can. The camera will take continuous snapshots of the garbage can. A threshold level is set which compares the output of camera and load sensor .The comparison is done with help of microcontroller. After analysing the image we get an idea about level of garbage in the can and from the load cell sensor we get to know weight of garbage. Accordingly information is processed that is controller checks if the threshold level is exceeded or not. The controller sends a message with the help of GSM module to Garbage collection local central office to notify that garbage can is exceeded its capacity and disposal of waste is required. Accordingly the authority sends the garbage can collecting vehicle to collect the garbage, which is done with the help of robot mechanism.

This paper presents a solution of the problem of the route calculation for garbage removal trucks. The entire system architecture including algorithms of the route calculation, server and client part software, electronic devices on the garbage containers, mobile solution and collaboration with other routing services is presented. The dynamic network model and the optimization criterion on containers status and road traffic as well as the knowledge base which form the hybrid control system responsible for time of the garbage collection are introduced.

This project manages the garbage collection done by Municipal Corporation with the help of an IOT based embedded device attached to dustbin of each area, this device continuously update the status of dustbins in each area to the website designed for this management. This device continuously detect the level of dustbin using ultrasonic sensor and as the dustbin gets full it will update its status of getting full on the website designed for garbage management along with date and time and will go to waiting state and remain in this state till dustbin gets empty. A timer is also set simultaneously in this state for a fixed duration within which dustbin must be cleaned by the Municipal Corporation. If this timer gets expired and dustbin is not cleaned by their employees on given time then device will sent a message to the higher authority that dustbin not cleaned on time and again set the timer for the same duration and remain in waiting state. Once the dustbin is cleaned by the employees the device will comes out of waiting state and will update its status of getting cleaned on the website along with date and time. Thus a record is maintained regarding dustbin status for each area in the website in tabular form using IOT technology along with embedded system which will efficiently manage the garbage collection by the Municipal Corporation and will resolve the major environmental issue of inefficient garbage collection leads to a clean and healthy environment.

It is a cheerful morning as I pull at my grandfather’s bony fingers, tugging him a long while he struggles to keep up.” This dream is a Regression incidence which takes Sang Ly to her childhood days. Sang Ly’s engagements with her grandfather are in her unconscious and she blissfully re-experiences them through the dream.

The name Lucky Fat employs dark humour : “I don’t know Luck’s real name, but I have no doubt that he pooped out of the womb both plump and happy…He’s Lucky because he has an uncanny knack for finding money lost amongst the garbage. He’s called Fat because…well, he’s fat. May say that Lucky looks just like a grinning Chinese Buddha (not the Cambodian Buddha, who is quite skinny). Lucky takes the comparison kindly, and for the past year, he has been collecting Buddha statues he finds amongst the trash.” The nickname is tremendously humorous for it is based on his appearance and fortune. It overshadows the inherent tragedies which Lucky Fat has faced and is still weathering in his life.

England’s Local Elections and Their Wider Significance, Explained
Voters choose local officials in England and Wales this week. Their verdicts could be an important clue to the shape of Britain’s looming general election.

Voters in England and Wales will cast ballots for mayors, council members and police commissioners on Thursday. And while the elections will, of course, focus on local issues like garbage collection and public safety, this vote is expected to have broader significance.
Why does this election matter?
Local elections, by their nature, are about who leads communities and ensures the delivery of certain public services. But many analysts believe the results of these elections will also serve as an important bellwether of general public opinion across England and of whether Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s beleaguered Conservative Party has a chance of retaining power in a general election expected this fall.
The Conservatives face a fierce challenge from the opposition Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer.
The Conservatives won a third successive general election in 2019, but the accumulated discontent of 14 years in power — a period that included several changes of prime minister and political scandals — is weighing heavily: Labour has sustained double-digit leads in national opinion polls for more than a year.
About one-third of England’s council seats are being contested on Thursday, and 11 mayoral seats in major English metro areas, home to about a third of Britain’s population, are also up for election.
What can the local elections tell us about a general election?
The big questions are how widely Labour can advance and how far the Conservatives may fall back.
British local elections have plenty of quirks — turnout is often relatively low, and smaller parties and independent candidates can do disproportionately well. But Thursday’s voting includes contests across England and Wales, and if the opposition’s apparent strength is less than opinion polling has suggested, the results should reveal that.
These elections are also a test of some new voting rules, under the Elections Act of 2022. It is the first time that all voters will need to show photo identification, which some rights groups say could disproportionately affect marginalized communities . The same law also changed the rules for electing mayors and police commissioners: Those races are now first past the post , meaning each voter has one vote, and the single candidate who gets the most votes in each constituency wins. That replaces a type of preferential voting in which voters could indicate a second choice.
Who is running?
Labour and the Conservatives are running candidates nationwide, as are the centrist Liberal Democrats. The Green Party is also increasingly competitive in some local elections. But a rising competitor on the right — Reform U.K., founded by the Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage — is running relatively few candidates, especially for a party that now places third in many opinion polls.
The highest-profile candidates are three incumbent mayors. For Labour, there’s Sadiq Khan, who is seeking to become London’s first three-term mayor since the citywide post was created in 2000. On the Conservative side, the big names are Ben Houchen in Tees Valley and Andy Street in the West Midlands. To win re-election, they will likely need to strongly outperform their party, which both have done in the past.
There is one parliamentary special election, or by-election, in Blackpool South, a deprived seaside district where the Conservative lawmaker Scott Benton has stepped down amid a lobbying scandal . Labour held the seat until 2019 and has strong expectations of winning it back.
Overall, voters will be electing more than 2,500 council members as 107 councils hold scheduled elections and 48 hold by-elections. With so many seats to fill, the list of candidates is long, and some contests will be watched more closely than others.
Prof. Tony Travers, director of the Institute of Public Affairs at the London School of Economics, said he would be closely watching the races in North East Lincolnshire, Hartlepool and Dudley to gauge changes in sentiment in what is known as the “Red Wall” — former Labour strongholds that the Conservatives won under Boris Johnson in 2019.
What are the main issues?
The economy, health and immigration have emerged as the three key issues for voters in Britain, according to polling from YouGov, which tracks public sentiment . Still, in these types of elections, national priorities can sometimes be overshadowed by local issues and the candidates’ personalities.
In May 2023, when the last local elections were held, the Conservatives held 33 percent of all council seats in England, and Labour held 35 percent, becoming the party with the largest share of council seats for the first time since 2002.
The Institute for Government, an independent British think tank, has noted that the Conservatives have been preparing for “a primarily defensive election,” hoping to hold on to the few councils they control and retain seats in places where they are the largest party but lack an absolute majority.
Who is expected to win?
Local elections in Britain are notoriously hard to predict, but most analysts agree that the Conservatives will face a real challenge, especially since most of these races were last run in 2021, a high point for the party after the early success of Britain’s Covid vaccination program.
Prof. Sara B. Hobolt, from the London School of Economics, suggested in a recent briefing that the Conservatives could lose as many as 500 council seats.
Labour’s five incumbent mayors have looked well placed to retain their seats — though Mr. Khan’s last race in London was significantly tighter than polling suggested.
For the Conservatives, Mr. Houchen has a strong following in Tees Valley — he won 72.8 percent of the vote in 2021 — but appears to be in a closer race this time , and polls suggest that Mr. Street is slightly trailing his Labour opponent in the West Midlands. If both of those mayors are unseated, it could be a major blow to Mr. Sunak’s leadership.
When will we learn the results?
Some votes will be counted overnight on Thursday, with results early Friday, while others will be tallied by Friday or Saturday afternoon. Although there will be a sense of how the Conservatives are performing by Friday afternoon, some critical results will be slower to emerge.
In the closely watched mayoral races, only the Tees Valley result is expected on Friday. The authorities in London and the West Midlands both plan to announce their results on Saturday afternoon.

Sarasota County may raise residents' fees for trash collection as it switches providers
As Sarasota County plans to switch to new providers for garbage collection in 2025, officials are preparing residents for changes, which could include fee increases.
The county’s 20-year partnership with its previous provider , Waste Management, will end. Waste Pro of Florida and FCC Environmental Services have signed four-year contracts, beginning on March 31, 2025 for collection services.
“Service for residents living in unincorporated Sarasota County and businesses operating in unincorporated Sarasota County will be included in the changes,” according to a county press release . “However, those living or operating in the cities of Sarasota, Venice, North Port or the Town of Longboat Key will not be affected by the new hauler contracts.”
The two providers will split services across two districts of unincorporated Sarasota County. Waste Pro will cover the North District, which encompasses the area north of State Road 72 and east of Midnight Pass Road. FCC Environmental will cover the South District, which covers coastal areas and extends into eastern Sarasota County.
The county will pay FCC Environmental Services $7.1 million over a four-year contract; Waste Pro will receive $5.8 million over the same timeframe, according to county records.
The county still distinguishes waste collection by property use – with Class I for single-family homes and multiplexes up to 9 units and Class II for apartment and condominium buildings, as well as mobile homes. However, the county will hold a public hearing on May 7 to determine whether to amend the ordinance that properties with curbside garbage pickup would be Class I and properties with central collection services – such as a Dumpster – would be Class II.
Sarasota County considers higher garbage fees
The County Commission will decide whether to impose proposed service fee hikes at a May 7 meeting. For Class I households, the increase would be $2.53 a month, or $30.36 a year. For Class II households, it would be an increase of $2.14 a month, or $25.68 a year.
In a memo to the county administrator, Solid Waste Director Brian Usher wrote that an evaluation by his department found that the current rates would not cover the projected requirements over the next five years – which increased 24% over current rates since the new collection firms were contracted.
The evaluation said some of the primary reasons for the rate recommendations were the “increase in cost associated with the franchise collection contract” and an increase in improvement programs.
Sarasota County Solid Waste Communications and Outreach Coordinator Wendi Crisp said that while the providers will be different, much of the solid waste collection process will remain the same.
Sarasota County to get choice of garbage receptacles
One new addition is that Sarasota County residents will be able to choose their own new garbage receptacle.
“It’s very similar to the recycling service currently in place where residents will be provided with a cart for their garbage,” Crisp said. “And then the trucks have the robotic arms that we’ll be doing the collection.”
When its contract with Waste Management ended, the county decided to hold a competitive bid process and created a market assessment that received more than 1,700 responses from residents and stakeholders.
“Those responses were used as the team went through the solicitation process for the new contracts, trying to make sure the services that were secured matched up with what the community was using and what their needs are,” Crisp said.
At the end of the year, each household will be given one free garbage cart, with the opportunity to choose its size. Any additional carts will cost additional fees.
The county will also offer a “bulk pickup” service for larger loads – such as furniture and appliances. Residents will have four free pickups a year after they schedule with their provider.
