Science in Everyday Life Essay

Science is the study of the universe, observing different phenomena and explaining complex facts in a simple form. The most significant accomplishment by science is improved healthcare and advances in medicine like penicillin, vaccines, treatments like transplants, etc., have increased human life expectancy from 40-50 years to 80-90 years. Electricity, our primary source of energy, is a product of science.

Mobile phones for communication, vehicles for travelling, appliances for cooking, fertilizers and equipment for agriculture, and computers that perform complex tasks in minutes are a few wonders of science in our daily life. However, development in science has resulted in increased human activity and the invention of armaments and weapons of mass destruction. Therefore, we should use the gift of science only towards the welfare of society.

‘Science’ originates in the Latin word ‘Scientia’, meaning ‘Art of Knowing’. One of the pantheons of renowned scientists, Aristotle, describes science as ‘Observation, Awareness and Understanding”. It is helping humans unravel nature's mysteries, find cures for deadly diseases and solve problems challenging humanity. Advancement in science has bettered our lives by leaps and bounds. There’s not a single second in our day which isn’t surrounded by or dependent on marvels of science. The morning alarm to awaken us, spacecraft carrying a satellite for communication, food cooking on the gas stove, equipment at the hospital for treatments, and even the screen on which you are reading this are all wonders of science.

Presence of Science in Our Daily Life

Medicine | It has reduced epidemics with the invention of vaccines and reduced the death rate—improved quality of life with the creation of treatment for incurable diseases like cancer and diabetes.

Technology And Inventions | The invention of computers revolutionized the world. Communication has never been as accessible—the introduction of phones, and the Internet has changed our networking and entertainment.

Day-to-Day Life | Cooking with a gas stove, electricity-run appliances, dishwashers, washing machines, lighting in the house, vehicles for transportation, setting of curd, ice in the fridge, and solar panels in the terrace have made our lives very easy and comfortable.

The immeasurable wonders of science have brought us from the medieval age to the current era. Life without science and technology is unimaginable. Science is not just the invention of tools, equipment and machines but also innovative ideas and awareness about facts and figures. Science and technology have improved our logical, scientific views. Science is universal and invincible in every arena of our life. Science has been the flagbearer of improvement to a great extent. Science has contributed to routine activities like cooking, transportation, driving, technology, gadgets, and kitchen appliances. Moreover, the medicines we use, the clothes we wear, and the satellites helping communicate are all products of science.

Application of Science in Everyday Life

Medical Science | Treatments for incurable diseases like cancer and diabetes are scientific inventions. Inventions of equipment like X-rays machines, Lasers, ECG, MRI and Radiology have been excessively useful in detecting aliments. Complex operations like heart, liver transplants, kidney replacements etc., are possible due to the advancement of science.

Innovation, Transportation and Communication | The movement of a person from one point to another is accessible and fast due to planes and vehicles, transportation to another planet through rockets and satellites is also made possible due to science. Transferring and sharing data takes seconds because the internet, mobile and computers have brought the world closer.

Machines And Source Of Energy | Electricity is the source of light and heat in our daily life. It also powers all the gadgets and machines. Other sources like solar energy, nuclear energy etc., are other notable scientific inventions. High-end appliances at home, agricultural technologies like irrigation systems and fertilizers— all of this involves science.

Cooking | Lpg stoves, mixers, grinders, refrigerators, and other appliances are the contribution of science in our daily life. The setting of curd, the rising of bread and the idli dough all involve the scientific process of fermentation. Due to science, the freezing and drying of food products to increase shell life is possible. The latest area in the culinary world, molecular gastronomy, is being bestowed by science.

Shortcomings of Science

Science has its pros and cons. One of the biggest threats to humankind is nuclear weapons that can result in mass destruction of the planet and humankind itself.

People's physical health is impacted by their overdependence on technology.

Science and development, especially the exploitation of natural resources and the subsequent deforestation, have a profoundly negative impact on the environment.

Technology is a tool that people utilise for fraudulent actions.

My First Experience With Science: Mystery Of Curd

My first practical exposure to science was at the age of 7 when my grandmother showed me the process of curd sets. She told me science is magic which will convert milk to curd. At that time I didn’t fully understand the process of fermentation but I was amazed by it. Recently, I had the opportunity to taste instant ice cream, made using molecular gastronomy and nitrogen, and how it uses chemical transformations in cooking.

Science has revolutionized the world. Science and technology are constantly evolving and advancing towards the betterment of the world. Science feeds our imagination and curiosity through facts and figures. Science can do both wonderful and destructive things, and it is left to us to use it precisely for the welfare of society.

Computer technology is one huge benefit of science. Nowadays, it would be unimaginable to consider living without computing technology.

A huge number of professions now rely totally on the computer and the internet. Besides, the computer and the internet have become our biggest source of entertainment in our everyday life.

Automobiles, an important scientific invention, has made our lives easy by significantly reducing everyday commuting time. The air conditioner is another scientific invention that has made our lives bearable and comfortable in the face of extreme weather conditions. Also, in the field of medical science, high-quality medicines are available that quickly remove any ailment that can happen in everyday life like headache, sprain, cough, allergy, stomach ache, fatigue etc.

Dark Side of Science

In spite of its tremendous benefits, there is a negative side to science. Science, unfortunately, has also done some disservice to humanity due to some of its inventions.

One of the biggest harms that science has brought to humanity is in the field of armament. Although some hail the invention of gunpowder as a great achievement, humanity must rue the day when this invention happened.

Steadily and relentlessly, the use and perfection of gunpowder have taken place in many new and more destructive weapons. As such, humanity now suffers due to weapons like shells, bombs, artillery, and guns. Such weapons threaten the everyday life of all individuals.

Another disservice of science has been the emission of pollution. A huge amount of radioactive pollution is emitted in various parts of the world where nuclear energy production happens. Such pollution is very dangerous as it can cause cancer, radioactive sickness, and cardiovascular disease.

Of course, who can ignore the massive amount of air pollution caused by automobiles, another scientific invention. Furthermore, automobiles are an everyday part of our lives that emit unimaginable levels of carbon monoxide in the air every year. Consequently, this causes various lung diseases and also contributes to global warming and acid rain.

Here’s an opportunity to satisfy your curiosity about the science of something close at hand, something we encounter every day but to which most of us are blissfully oblivious. Write a short essay on an aspect of “everyday” science or technology that you would enjoy sharing with readers. Though you will have to do some research, this is not meant to be written as a research essay. You will keep quotes to a minimum and mostly summarize or paraphrase your sources, just as if you were writing for a general interest magazine.

Some possible topics:

  • How my guitar, cello, flute makes music
  • How my bicycle, DVR, microwave, eyeglasses work(s)
  • Chemistry of making bread, wine, cola, or grilling steak, or . . .
  • Why my dog likes to play catch; why my canary sings
  • Materials engineering and/or physics of my tennis racquet, razor scooter, skateboard
  • Why hurricanes or tornadoes occur when & where they do

This essay must be accurate and clear, but that’s just the beginning. You aren’t writing a technical manual but, rather, an informal essay. So you must fascinate your reader, keep her or him reading. Your tone may be earnest or amusing, but you must convince readers that your topic matters. Some suggestions:

  • Begin by choosing a topic that genuinely interests you. If you aren’t interested, your reader won’t be, either.
  • Form a question or a series of questions about your topic to make your research efficient and to give your essay a shape. For example, Why does barbecued meat taste so good? What makes it taste different than meat cooked on a stove? or What allows my watch to tell time accurately? What makes it waterproof? Why are there so many puffy white clouds on summer days?
  • Note that you aren’t writing a history of the science or technology involved—you are explaining how something works .
  • As you write your essay, aim to present your information in a way that makes it easy for the reader to follow.
  • To make your subject easier to grasp and to interest readers, you’ll probably want to begin your essay with an anecdote or a problem from personal experience. You may continue to use personal experience in your essay if it helps you relate your ideas to readers. You may also find metaphors or analogies useful in explaining your topic.

There is still so much we don't understand about the origin of life on Earth.

The definition of life itself is a source of debate among scientists, but most researchers agree on the fundamental ingredients of a living cell. Water, energy, and a few essential elements are the prerequisites for cells to emerge. However, the exact details of how this happens remain a mystery.

Recent research has focused on trying to recreate in the lab the chemical reactions that constitute life as we know it, in conditions plausible for early Earth (around 4 billion years ago). Experiments have grown in complexity, thanks to technological progress and a better understanding of what early Earth conditions were like.

However, far from bringing scientists together and settling the debate, the rise of experimental work has led to many contradictory theories. Some scientists think that life emerged in deep-sea hydrothermal vents , where the conditions provided the necessary energy. Others argue that hot springs on land would have provided a better setting because they are more likely to hold organic molecules from meteorites. These are just two possibilities which are being investigated.

Here are five of the most remarkable discoveries over the last five years.

Reactions in early cells

What energy source drove the chemical reactions at the origin of life ? This is the mystery that a research team in Germany has sought to unravel. The team delved into the feasibility of 402 reactions known to create some of the essential components of life, such as nucleotides (a building block of DNA and RNA). They did this using some of the most common elements that could have been found on the early Earth.

These reactions, present in modern cells, are also believed to be the core metabolism of LUCA, the last universal common ancestor , a single-cell, bacterium-like organism.

For each reaction, they calculated the changes in free energy, which determines if a reaction can go forward without other external sources of energy. What is fascinating is that many of these reactions were independent of external influences like adenosine triphosphate , a universal source of energy in living cells.

The synthesis of life's fundamental building blocks didn't need an external energy boost: it was self-sustaining.

Life relies on molecules to store and convey information. Scientists think that RNA ( ribonucleic acid ) strands were precursors to DNA in fulfilling this role, since their structure is more simple.

The emergence of RNA on our planet has long confused researchers. However, some progress has been made recently. In 2022, a team of collaborators in the US generated stable RNA strands in the lab. They did it by passing nucleotides through volcanic glass. The strands they made were long enough to store and transfer information.

Volcanic glass was present on the early Earth, thanks to frequent meteorite impacts coupled with a high volcanic activity. The nucleotides used in the study are also believed to have been present at that time in Earth's history. Volcanic rocks could have facilitated the chemical reactions that assembled nucleotides into RNA chains.

Hydrothermal vents

Carbon fixation is a process in which CO 2 gains electrons. It is necessary to build the molecules that form the basis of life.

An electron donor is necessary to drive this reaction. On the early Earth, H 2 could have been the electron donor. In 2020, a team of collaborators showed that this reaction could spontaneously occur and be fueled by environmental conditions similar to deep-sea alkaline hydrothermal vents in the early ocean. They did this using microfluidic technology , devices that manipulate tiny volumes of liquids to perform experiments by simulating alkaline vents.

This pathway is strikingly similar to how many modern bacterial and archaeal cells (single-cell organisms without a nucleas) operate.

The Krebs Cycle

In modern cells, carbon fixation is followed by a cascade of chemical reactions that assemble or break down molecules, in intricate metabolic networks that are driven by enzymes.

But scientists are still debating how metabolic reactions unfolded before the emergence and evolution of those enzymes. In 2019, a team from the University of Strasbourg in France made a breakthrough . They showed that ferrous iron, a type of iron that was abundant in early Earth's crust and ocean, could drive nine out of 11 steps of the Krebs Cycle . The Krebs Cycle is a biological pathway present in many living cells.

Here, ferrous iron acted as the electron donor for carbon fixation, which drove the cascade of reactions. The reactions produced all five of the universal metabolic precursors—five molecules that are fundamental across various metabolic pathways in all living organisms.

Building blocks of ancient cell membranes

Understanding the formation of life's building blocks and their intricate reactions is a big step forward in comprehending the emergence of life.

However, whether they unfolded in hot springs on land or in the deep sea, these reactions would not have gone far without a cell membrane. Cell membranes play an active role in the biochemistry of a primitive cell and its connection with the environment.

Modern cell membranes are mostly composed of compounds called phospholipids, which contain a hydrophilic head and two hydrophobic tails. They are structured in bilayers, with the hydrophilic heads pointing outward and the hydrophobic tails pointing inward.

Research has shown that some components of phospholipids, such as the fatty acids that constitute the tails, can self-assemble into those bilayer membranes in a range of environmental conditions . But were these fatty acids present on the early Earth? Recent research from Newcastle University, UK gives an interesting answer. Researchers recreated the spontaneous formation of these molecules by combining H₂-rich fluids, likely present in ancient alkaline hydrothermal vents, with CO 2 -rich water resembling the early ocean.

This breakthrough aligns with the hypothesis that stable fatty acid membranes could have originated in alkaline hydrothermal vents, potentially progressing into living cells. The authors speculated that similar chemical reactions might unfold in the subsurface oceans of icy moons, which are thought to have hydrothermal vents similar to terrestrial ones.

Each of these discoveries adds a new piece to the puzzle of the origin of life. Regardless of which ones are proved correct, contrasting theories are fueling the search for answers.
