Retirement Party: Personal Experience Essay

Though retirement party is not ending but rather a new beginning, it may become a splendid opportunity to celebrate certain life accomplishments. As a rule, speeches on such occasions are meant to give credit to the achievements of the retired and hardly ever contain any criticism. At my retirement party, listening equally favorable words from my colleagues, close friends and relatives would be the greatest praise for me because it would imply that I managed to balance my career and personal life.

I would be most pleased to hear that I always managed to allot enough time to my professional growth and my dear and near people. On the one hand, I would like to hear from my relatives that notwithstanding continuous overload, I have always been unselfish and responsive to their troubles.

On the other hand, it would be really pleasant to hear from my colleagues that I have been a good specialist and a good team player. With the present business environment, it is significant not only to obtain deep knowledge and profound practical skills but also to adapt to ongoing changes, focusing on cooperation instead of competition.

Disregarding the generally accepted format of the speeches at retirement parties, according to which they are mostly approving, sometimes even hypocritically approving, the speakers’ words would shed light upon not only my career achievements but also my interpersonal relationships with the rest of the staff which are a significant component of life accomplishments as well. In other words, I consider combining personal and professional growth the greatest possible achievement.

Appraising my current way of life, it can be stated that I am already on track to my dreams though certain changes should be made for increasing the likelihood of their realization.

I do my best for developing my professional skills, trying to balance various dimensions of my life. However, the improvement of my time management and goal stating skills would be helpful for enhancing the effectiveness of all my efforts. Wake (2008) noted that “Consciousness is a continuous process and the only thing that changes is ‘intentionality’” (p. 120).

Thus, watching my intentions is important for selecting the most appropriate methods of their realization and improving the future outcomes. Putting more emphasis on self-organization and soul-searching for defining the major life goals would increase the likelihood of achieving all of them by the day of my retirement party.

Frankel’s view of future orientation is relevant to my situation and allows me to choose the right direction for all my efforts. Frankel (2008) noted that “future orientation implies a determined effort not to be constrained by the past or even the present, but to use all resources to capture the fruits of future opportunities under consistent external and internal threats and technological change” (p. 14).

The choice of the most appropriate vector for all my power is significant because swimming with the stream and living without definite intentions and objectives can be compared to wandering in a forest not knowing the route. Frankel’s concept of future orientation has become an important solution in the process of my soul searching which motivated me to look into better tomorrow instead of being imprisoned in my present.

In general, it can be stated that certain changes in my self-organization and implementation o Frankel’s concept of future orientation would increase the likelihood of realization of my dream to hear equally favorable speeches from my relatives, friends and colleagues at my retirement party.

All that to say, she’s been a fixture here for quite a while. To say that Max knows every aspect of this business like the back of her hand is not an understatement.

I remember the first time I walked into this office. Maxine was the first person to greet me. She gave me advice on where to park, showed me how to fill out a PTO request, and answered all my questions during lunch. She introduced me to everyone on staff.  And she made sure I knew all the ins and outs of working for Brighton Industries. This wasn’t part of her job, but she did it anyway. She made every new person in the office feel welcome.

Every office has a “go-to” person. The person who knows how to handle the difficult client. The person who knows how to hire the right person for the job. The person who knows how to load new toner in the printer. Max has been our go-to person for 25 years, and she leaves big shoes to fill.

One of Max’s best qualities is her ability to stay calm in the middle of the storm. Do you remember the great Jones Company fiasco in 2004? While the rest of us panicked about the loss of our biggest client, she went out and found us a new client. And that client brought in twice as much revenue as the client we lost!

We know that Maxine is looking forward to retirement. She told me she is planning to spend more time quilting. And she’ll be hanging out with her daughter and three adorable grandbabies. You’ve all seen pictures of her grandkids, right? Of course, you have! We are all so excited to wish Maxine well as she starts checking off items from her retirement bucket list . 

For your retirement

Thank you so much for all the kind words. I have loved working at Brighton Industries. I have had some of the best times in my life at this office. I have made lifelong friends who I treasure. Thank you for being the best coworkers and friends a woman could ask for.

There are a few things that I won’t miss about working for Brighton. I won’t miss filling out the TPS reports. I won’t miss the late nights that came with tax season. I won’t miss how cold the office is in the summer, or how hot the office is during the winter. But I will miss all of you. You have made this office feel like a second home to me. Thank you.

I discovered what amazing coworkers I had when I lost my mom to cancer three years ago. You all stepped in so willingly to pick up the slack when I couldn’t perform my regular duties. Not only did you take on more responsibilities in the office, but many of you also provided meals to my family. It meant the world to me, knowing that I could depend upon you all for help.

For a coworker

I have witnessed many people come and go throughout my years here at Smith and Smith. However, I am sadder today than ever, knowing Michelle won’t be stepping out of our elevator Monday morning. 

Even though Michelle has only worked at Smith and Smith for the last eight years, she has contributed much to our organization. For example, she made our network more secure by spearheading our cybersecurity efforts. But she also had a knack for streamlining processes, allowing us to work more efficiently. Before Michelle began working here, we worked a great deal of overtime. The reason we are now able to leave at 5 p.m. is because of the processes she began.

On a personal level, Michelle was always a delight to be around. She’s not one to complain – even when we had to put in extra hours last winter. Michelle was always the first to jump in to help when someone was sick or had a personal emergency. We all have stories of how Michelle helped us during a pinch. 

Michele – I will remember you with fondness. I am excited that you will have more time to spend with your beautiful grandchildren, and I wish you every happiness in the future. 

I was honored to be asked to speak about Samuel this afternoon. After working for Samuel for over 20 years, I have a lot to say. Don’t worry, Sam. Most of it is good.

First, I would like to tell you some things about Sam’s background that you might not have been aware of. Sam has a degree in Chemistry from Perdue. Even though he was prepared to spend his life in a lab setting, he sat next to a stranger on the subway one day while going to a job interview. He spoke with this person and learned he was starting a new shoe company and looking for someone to oversee the distribution. Of course, that stranger was Frank Jones, our illustrious founder. And that was why Sam never used his chemistry degree.

The second thing you may not know about Sam is that he is a violin virtuoso. I didn’t know this about him until a few years ago when Sam and his wife had me over for dinner. I saw a music stand in the corner of his living room and asked about it. Sam’s wife encouraged him to play for me. Needless to say, I was dumbfounded by his talent. 

For a subordinate

I know I have the reputation of being a bit of a perfectionist. In fact, before Lucy was hired four years ago, I had been through twelve assistants in thirteen years. That’s one reason why today is such a sad day for me. While I am ecstatic that Lucy will have more time to devote to her novel, I am sorry that I have to find someone to replace her. It’s not going to be easy.

Lucy is amazingly gifted at reading my mind. In fact, it’s a little scary how she seems to know what I want before I ask for it. This ESP, or whatever gift she has been blessed with, has saved me on more than one occasion. I’ll never forget how she interrupted me during a meeting with Mrs. Franklin to remind me of something that saved that account. She also kept me out of the doghouse at home by purchasing perfect Mother’s Day and anniversary gifts for Louise.

While I certainly will miss Lucy’s contributions to our workplace, I am most sad for our clients. Everyone loves Lucy, and they are as heartbroken as I am that she is retiring.  

For a teacher

Throughout Mrs. Anderson’s career, she has taught approximately 2,300 students. That means she has graded more than 18,000 essays, 2,300 research papers, and more book reports than you can imagine. Incredibly, her purple flair ink pen isn’t attached permanently to her hand with all of the grading she has done over the years.

But more important than the essays and book reports are the relationships she has formed with her students over the last three decades. She has comforted students who have lost family members and helped kids find jobs. She has written letters of recommendation for scholarships and advised many in their careers. 

On top of her work as an English teacher, she has overseen the publication of the yearbook and newspaper, traveled with students to Europe, ran the concession stand at football games, coached the cheerleaders, and sat through negotiations each year on behalf of the teachers’ union. 

Mrs. Anderson – you deserve a break. We hope you can sleep in each morning, stay up late reading novels each night, and travel the globe without the fear of losing a kid. Congratulations on your retirement!

For a family member

It’s hard to imagine our Dad without a job. This place has been a part of his routine for so long that he may show up on Monday simply out of habit. In fact, we may have to put a sign on the back of his front door reminding him to stay at home. 

And Dad loved every minute of it. Unlike most people, Dad never complained about his job. In fact, when we prayed as a family before each meal, Dad often expressed thanks for this company and his job. 

But, we are thankful that he can now stay home. He’s worked hard for a long time and deserves a break. But don’t worry – he won’t be sitting around for long. My siblings and I all have lists of home repairs that only Dad can do. We’ve also scheduled a few fishing trips over the next several months.

Thank you for inviting my siblings and me to this retirement party. It’s been a lovely day. I only wish Mom could have survived long enough to see Dad retire. She was always so proud of Dad for everything he accomplished. I’m sure she is smiling down on us right now. 

Funny retirement speech

Christopher has many gifts and talents. And he has contributed a lot to our company over the years. He’s been the top salesperson for twenty-three out of the twenty-five years he has worked here. He has worked hard to streamline our processes to work smarter, not harder. He has also been a leader in our industry by representing us in front of the state legislature. 

Even though I can easily provide you with a long list of awards and accolades, he will forever be known in this office as the person who was always misplacing his stuff. We found his keys by the copier, his wallet next to the giant fern in the back room, his raincoat on Mitch’s desk, and his water bottles – everywhere. It’s always been a mystery to everyone how someone absentminded can perform in a high-pressure job so well. 

So, we have purchased a tile tracker system to help you keep track of all your stuff on behalf of your retirement. Now that you won’t have an entire staff of people keeping track of your personal belongings, we think this might help. It may also keep Louise from killing you during your first week at home.

I remember the first time I went to visit her the day before school started one year. Her whole room was decorated in a football theme. Watching her set up team areas, score boards, and decorations made me wish I was going to be in her class!

Whitney took advantage of every spare minute she had to teach her students. Sometimes when teachers walk students down the hall to the restroom or a resource class, they take the opportunity to catch a quick breath and take a break themselves.

Not Ms. Paul! I'm sure you have seen her passing out multiplication flash cards to students in line for the restroom. Who can forget her marching down the hall chanting, "right, acute, obtuse!" as she and the students formed the angles with their arms.

Whitney was always available to help her students be successful. Even at the end of a long day, she would volunteer her time to stay after school to meet with small groups of students who needed extra help.

Whitney has been an amazing teacher, but she is also a great colleague and friend. If you were ever at school late and needed someone to help you brainstorm teaching ideas, Whitney was there.

She has been our "go-to" person when we have had questions or needed ideas. Heck, after 40 years of teaching you better have some knowledge to share!

Some people do not need to read from their manuscripts at this length. They may prepare and practice using only their outline. But if you’re a beginner, you can bring an entire manuscript when delivering.

Follow these six steps to creating a retirement speech.

Step 1: Gather information

The first step to creating a retirement speech is to gather information about the person’s life from different people. Hopefully, you can get extraordinary stories from them and a core idea of what you will put in the speech.

Gathering information will be a breeze if the retiree has been a long-time employee. You’ll find out how multi-faceted the person is. To their fellow employees, the person might be friendly and good-humored. But to their supervisor, the retiree might be intelligent and strategic.

Try gathering as much information about their personality as possible. But remember the key details. Try asking the following questions:

• How long has the retiree been in the industry?
• How long has the retiree worked in the company?
• What were their contributions to the field or company?
• What were the awards they received in the course of their career?
• What were their previous positions?

Step 2: Learn All the Special Qualities of the Person

Your retirement speech should not only highlight the person’s career. It must also involve legendary stories or perhaps funny stories from their personal life.

For example, what are their personal hobbies? If the retiree likes to golf, you might try a golf-related theme for the party. If the retiree is an English teacher, try inserting English puns in your speech.

Here are some questions you can ask during interviews with people to craft a fantastic retirement speech.

• What are their nicknames?
• What is the name of their current spouse and kids?
• What would people say is the best trait of the retiree?
• How has the person made an exceptional contribution to the workplace?
• What lessons did the people learn from the retiree?

However, some people want to keep their private life private. You don’t have to snoop around when gathering information about the retiree.

The entire speech writing process and public speaking stage are much easier if you start with an outline.

You have to decide how the farewell speech will sound. Do you want a heartfelt speech, a humorous speech, or a mix of both? Once you have decided, it’s time to brainstorm what to include in each part.

• Introduction – This part should include an attention-grabbing story. It’s an essential part of memorable retirement speeches.
• Body 1 – Name one or two traits of the person. Are they great listeners? Do they always have the most brilliant ideas in meetings? Are they approachable to everyone?
• Body 2 – Discuss the person’s entire career journey. This should be easy if you’ve worked with them for a long time or gathered enough information. Make it clear what the person has attained and the differences they made to the company.
• Body 3 – Share personal lessons you’ve learned from the person. A short story can be used.
• Thank the person – Wish the person well in their retirement. End the speech with a memorable punchline and a “Happy retirement!”

Step 4: Write Out the Speech (Optional)

Skip this step if you’re already a skilled public speaker. Some practiced orators can even deliver humorous speeches on the spot without stuttering.

Mentioning memorable moments improves bonds with the honoree. Let them know what you will miss most about them.

Keep It Short—But Not Too Short

An important person in the company deserves more than three minutes of tribute. But that doesn’t mean you must include every detail of their previous career. Keep it short and sweet at around five to ten minutes to not bore the audience.

Use a Simple Framework

Keep your outline organized and simple to clarify the main message. It should serve as a blueprint to track your entire speech.

You already know the five parts of a retirement speech. However, you can still make it simpler using these parts:

• Greet the audience and thank them for coming to the party.
• Express why everyone is gathered.

Balance the Past and Future

Refrain from assuming that the best days of the retiree are over. They are likely to be excited about their retirement. So instead of making a eulogy-like speech, deliver one that covers both the past and future.

Carefully Use Humor

You’ve probably heard hundreds of speeches with funny punchlines. But you should always plan your humor around your audience. Avoid jokes that rely on profanity and controversial topics. No one also wants to hear you put the retiree down harshly.

As with any other type of speech or presentation, preparing is always worth it. Try talking with people who have worked closely with the retiree. Look for common themes, then start crafting.

I also don’t recommend spending too much time discussing the career highlight reel. The audience might already know the honoree’s professional development in minute detail. Focus on their impact, values, and the larger lesson they taught you.

Don’t Read Your Speech

It’s okay to bring an outline or manuscript as long as your eyes stay longer on the audience. Tell the speech from the heart, take deep breaths, and know exactly what you will tell next.

Stand Up Straight

Maintain a good posture as you walk across the stage and give the speech. It shows confidence in your discussion, making the audience more interested.

Avoid These Retirement Speech Pitfalls

Overlooking.

No, retirees don’t sit on their porches all day reminiscing about their previous job. Many people continue working or start their own businesses. The correct term for this is “active retirement.” So avoid retirement cliches in your speech that will make you sound tone-deaf.

Joking about old age may have been common in earlier retirement speeches in an attempt to make a funny speech. But today, it’s considered insensitive. Avoid offensive words toward the retiree and the audience.

I did not believe these rumours until I attended Mt Shah’s physics class. I was literally blown away by the methods of teaching physics by Mr. Shah. His innovative ways of teaching the concepts and making them simple for the students to understand is amazing. On behalf of every student, thank you, Mr. Shah, for all your efforts to teach us and I can guarantee that we all will apply your method of teaching in the future.

This year marks Mr. Shah’s 25 years as a teacher at our institute. For 25 years, he has spent his time among all the students, sharing his knowledge and important life lessons. He has supported every student and taught us many valuable life lessons. I do agree that he was strict sometimes as a teacher but he was also very friendly like a friend. 

Although Mr. Shah was a strict teacher, he occasionally had fun moments with all of us. He is very enthusiastic when it comes to sports and is always ready to play a game of badminton. I have no shame in admitting that he has defeated me twice and I am assuring you, Sir, I am going to win the third game so be prepared.

Besides being an excellent, creative, and hardworking teacher, he is very good at managing events. He was the one who took the entire responsibility of the Science fest and Annual sports day at our school last year. Throughout his stay in our school, he had humbly participated and contributed to all the events.

To conclude, I want to say that Mr. Shah has always been more than just a teacher. He inspires me to be a better person. Through his actions, he teaches me how to manage life. I owe a lot of my success because of his guidance and the trust he showed in me. At this moment, I would like to extend my gratitude to Mr. Shah for being a great teacher and a role model. 5 things to know about caring for your American flag — and how to retire it

The Fourth of July means a lot of things for Americans: A day off work, a hot grill, the beach, and fireworks when night falls.

But the holiday is, at heart, the celebration of our independence — and makes us think all over again about our American flag .

Still, while many people know to salute the flag or say the Pledge of Allegiance, not nearly as many know just how to care for their flags — including how to handle them when it comes to "retirement." For one thing, it is actually OK to burn your flag when its time comes.

"It's important to know how to handle and dispose of an American flag, because the American flag is our country's symbol of national pride that stands for the freedom we won when the flag was first created during the Revolutionary War," explains Jennifer Allebach, vice president of girl experience at Girl Scouts of the USA.

So in honor of Independence Day, here are five things to keep in mind while handling, displaying and storing your Stars and Stripes over the holiday.

Rules about the flag are guidelines, not gospel.

In 1923, patriotic organizations decided to create a standard set of civilian rules for the flag, says Peter Ansoff, president of the North American Vexillological Association, an organization devoted to the study of flags.

They based the code largely on a circular from the U.S. Army that was issued in 1917. The government didn't get involved until 1942 when the code was adopted by Congress. You can read the full United States code here .

"The thing people miss the most is these are guidelines, but not anything stricter," says Ansoff. "People almost treat the physical flag like a holy object, and a lot of people treat the flag code as holy writ. But it's guidelines — and common sense ideas as to how to treat our flag as a respectful symbol of our country."

When a flag touches the ground, it does not have to be burned.

Yes, keeping a flag aloft and unsoiled is ideal, but it's not automatically doomed to retirement if it does touch the ground, says Jeff L. Hendricks, deputy director, Americanism Division of The American Legion.

"You can clean it, ensure there's no rips or tears or soils, and then place it back up," he said. "If it can't be cleaned or repaired, we'd ask that you take it to your American Legion post."

There are specific ways a flag should be displayed in order to be respectful.

No draping, festooning, or holding it up in folds, said Hendricks. Your flag shouldn't be a curtain, blanket or throw. Festive bunting is OK and specifically mentioned in the code.

However, flag designs not made of actual flag material can be displayed in various ways. That means T-shirts with a flag likeness, tattoos or other miscellany are usually just fine.

That said, any changes to the red, white and blue in an American flag, when traditionally displayed, is considered disrespectful; the code specifically says the colors should not be changed, or items added.

Ansoff agrees, but feels some changes to the flag don't necessarily convey disrespect.

"You see protest flags all the time," Ansoff said. "It's about making a statement."

Your flag should be folded properly when stored.

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are taught from a young age how to fold a flag into a trifold: First, fold it lengthwise twice. Then, starting at the end of the stripes, fold it as a triangle over on itself until you're left with a triangle that shows just the blue field and white stars.

"That's not in the flag code itself, but that is the traditional and preferred method of storing the flag," says Hendricks.

The American Legion, and other outlets, sell special boxes made to fit the folded flag .

Flag retirement is a solemn ceremony, and it can involve burning the flag.

The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Girl Scouts are three organizations that hold special flag retirement ceremonies, and both organizations accept flags throughout the year.

In the case of the Girl Scouts, the retirement ceremony involves a campfire at sunset, color guards, personally written tributes to the flag, saluting and the Pledge of Allegiance. After that, the flag is placed in the fire and a patriotic song is sung.

Many American Legion posts hold flag retirement ceremonies on Flag Day, June 14, called Disposal of Unserviceable Flag Ceremonies. Flags are placed into a fire like a pyre, says Hendricks.

"I liken it to a funeral," he says. "You show respect and give it a dignified process — that's how you'd celebrate someone's passing. The code says to destroy the flag in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

One warning, though: Ansoff does not recommend burning all flags. "Back in the day, when flags were made of cotton — that made sense," he says. "But these days, it's not a good idea to burn a nylon flag."

That's because synthetic flags, particularly ones made of nylon, will create hazardous gases when burned. Instead, the recommendation for synthetic flags is to recycle them through organizations like American Flag Disposal , which will accept them with a small donation by mail .

The armed forces also retire flags, often by burning, but their ceremonies are generally more private. In addition, as the United States Marine Corps Flag Manual notes , flags are first examined to determine whether they have historical value, and therefore should be preserved or possibly displayed.

April 17, 2019; Hall Room: It was 16th April 2019, Thursday on Bal Mandir Senior Secondary School the farewell party of Mrs. Shilpa Dey was organized. All the students and teachers were asked to report to the school auditorium at 11:00 am. The school auditorium was beautifully decorated but there were somewhere the waves of emotions clinging everyone.

The farewell event was organized by the class 10th students of the school. They made all the arrangements which include proper sitting arrangements for the students and the teachers, conduction of a small event, decoration of the auditorium, etc.

Firstly, Mrs. Shilpa Dey ma’am was given a warm welcome with a floral bouquet by the principal of the school. The function started with a chorus opening song with stabilized a beautiful essence in the atmosphere.

Then the principal of the school was called on the dice to say a few words, his speech was all based you how lucky he was of getting Mrs. Dey for 30 years as a regular and respected teacher of the school, how she endured giving all hers to make her students shine, how she stayed in the school even after getting job opportunities in different schools, he ended his speech saying that the school will miss her contributions.

The mike was then handed over to Mrs. Dey she before saying anything busted on with tears as she can’t believe the fact that this is her last day of school and she is going be retired.

She regarded the school to be her home and the students being the family members. Later, students and teachers of different departments sportingly shared their view about Mrs. Dey, how much they love her.

Mrs. Dey arranged cakes and biscuits for the students and like this, the event ended with an emotional note.

Farewell Ceremony of Miss Kaur

May 21, 2019; Hall Room: It was 20th May 2019, Friday at St. Xavier’s English Medium School, Kishangnj it was the last day of Miss Sarabjeet Kaur. The students were all halfhearted and the senior students of class 10th arranged a farewell party of Miss Kaur.

It was only 5 years spent on this school by Miss Kaur and she has become the favorite teacher of the school. Students with any issues either subject related matter or family issues use to go to Miss. Kaur and she being the magic wand to the school solved them within a click.

During the farewell day, all the students were asked to report the school auditorium at 11:00 am. The auditorium was well decorated with colorful flowers and papers and each paper were having the message for Miss. Kaur.

The function started with a group song and then the Miss. Kaur was given a floral welcome by the students. She along with the principal were called in the stage to cut a cake.

Then the principal of the school was called to share his views; he acknowledged how lucky he and the school was to get a teacher and a person like Miss Kaur.

Further, the mike was handed over to Miss Kaur, she had a trembling voice and was about to burst into tears. She with her flooded heart said how much she is going to miss the school and the children when she will be travelling abroad.

The motivated the students to study hard and secure a bright future. She even said every one to stay in touch through phone and social media. The students were also called to say something about ma’am. This created an emotional environment in the auditorium.

Lastly, students gifted a handmade card and a small gift to Miss Kaur. And Miss Kaur distributed cakes and chocolates among the children. The function ended on a sad note.

American culture has no set ritual to mark retirement. They created their own.

Victor Llorente sampled work lives around the country over the course of a month for this assignment. While following a firefighter’s final 24-hour shift, he went on calls in a firefighter coat and even slept at the fire station during breaks.

Among life’s major milestones — think graduations, weddings, even annual events like birthdays and anniversaries — the retirement day is notably lacking in cultural convention, shared ritual. (Even the ceremonial gold watch today seems more the stuff of myth than reality.) It mostly tends to fall to co-workers, family, even retirees themselves to conjure, ad hoc, a celebratory send-off. Here’s a look at how a range of new retirees marked the end of their working days.

Fabric-store owner, 82, St. Petersburg, Fla.

Arthur Jay didn’t think he would spend his life running the family business. After growing up around his parents’ first fabric store on Long Island, he left to attend college and then to pursue a career in management at Kmart. But when Jay was 27, his father died unexpectedly, so he had to take over at Jay’s Fabric Center in St. Petersburg. Jay still wonders about what could have been, but over the last 54 years, he found his way to quiet moments of job satisfaction: helping someone pick out colors for a bedspread, planning custom draperies. “For me, every customer that came in was a different opportunity,” he says. “If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, getting up every day would be a drudgery.”

As a small-business owner who is closing his store, Jay is practical about the transition into retirement. Even after helping his last customer, he still had to ship the last orders, sell off the remaining inventory and pay the bills. But he was glad to have a last day of business, when longtime customers came by to thank him and his employees over slices of vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. “I’m sorry, but I like vanilla,” Jay says. “That’s one thing I got to do, because it was my cake.” He ate two pieces.

Juliane Bingener-Casey

Surgeon, 61, rochester, minn..

Before her last day in the operating room, Dr. Juliane Bingener-Casey, a surgeon and professor of surgery at the Mayo Clinic, experienced a series of lasts. “I knew when I did my last stomach case, my last small bowel,” she says. “You want them to go spectacularly well, with a cherry on top.” When she successfully finished her final operation, she was unsentimental, ready to put the scalpel down. “I felt like I was done,” Bingener-Casey says.

Over thousands of complicated cases on the operating table, Bingener-Casey learned to separate her feelings and her work. “You have to have very good control of your emotions, meaning you bury them,” she says. She did feel those emotions at her retirement reception, when the microphone was opened up to her colleagues after dinner. “I didn’t know I’d need so many tissues — one of my friends said I hadn’t cried like that in a long time,” Bingener-Casey says. “Hearing out loud that you’re appreciated and that people feel you’ve added value, in otherwise a very matter-of-fact surgical world, it’s just beautiful.”

Over 35 years of reporting for ABC7 Chicago, Roz Varon has seen her city from some unique vantage points. She has reported from the roof of the 110-story Willis Tower, the dinosaur-fossil storage room at the Field Museum, inside Glinda’s bubble onstage at a production of “Wicked” and atop a bull at the rodeo. “When I would drive into work every morning, I would look at the Willis Tower and think: I stood up there. Who gets to do that?” Varon says. “I would think to myself, Chicago is my city.”

Varon has been a familiar face for generations of Chicagoans, offering no-nonsense traffic reports ever since the ABC7 morning show debuted in 1989. So when it came time for her to retire, her city showed up. A partial list of the fans who congratulated her on her last day: Girl Scouts from Illinois and Indiana; members of the Chicago Department of Transportation, who gave her a Roz Varon Way street sign; Alan Krashesky, the first morning anchor at ABC7; her former journalism students; fellow breast-cancer survivors; and puppies from the anti-cruelty group she supported. Her co-workers presented her with a proclamation from the City of Chicago, declaring it Roz Varon Day. “It was mind-blowing, one thing after another after another,” Varon says. “It was like there was no other news, just special surprises for me!”

Latin-dance-music D.J., 60, Cincinnati

There has always been a certain feeling of euphoria that comes to Tony Pabón as he looks out at the dance floor from his D.J. table at Salsannati Dance Company. “To play music and have people start to clap or move their body or dance — that’s powerful,” he says. “I have to pinch myself sometimes.” So when his job started to feel more like a chore than a joy, Pabón knew it was time to retire. (He will continue working a day job at a bank.) “Lately, I’m not having the passion,” he says. “I’m doing it because it’s my duty.” Besides, standing for four-hour sets was taking a toll on his knees.

But first, there was his last show at Salsannati. Over decades of D.J.ing at restaurants, for parties and on river cruises, Pabón had become a fixture of Cincinnati’s Latin-music scene. Regulars packed the floor for the last night with D.J. Tony; the studio owner made a speech and gave Pabón a bottle of bourbon. “I like to talk a lot, but I found myself without words to say, because it was so overwhelming,” Pabón says. “I was on cloud nine for the whole night of dancing, even though I had the worst knee pain.”

Pabón is selling his D.J. equipment as he focuses on his other interests: leading a marriage group at church with his wife, painting and spending time with his grandchildren. Part of his identity will always be tied to music, which it has been ever since his first disco sets as a teenage D.J. in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. “At the end of the day, when you’re tired and frustrated, you put on that vinyl and drop that needle,” he says. “The sound comes out of the speakers, and you’re a brand-new person.”

Frances Fotia

Church organist, 83, ellwood city, pa..

When Frances Fotia was in the fifth grade, the nuns heard that she took piano lessons and asked if she would like to learn how to play the organ. She said yes and, soon after, started to play at Mass every day. “I kept doing that practically for the rest of my life,” Fotia says. She played as she raised her four daughters, and as they grew up and she became a grandmother. She played the organ at the funeral Masses for both of her parents; she played at friends’ weddings, and then at the weddings of their children. “I loved playing for the people for their sung prayer,” she says. “That’s basically what it was all about.”

In recent years, she shifted to weekly services. Easter Mass was her last day both playing the organ and directing the choir, which includes singers she has known since she was a girl. They sang “God’s Right Hand,” one of her favorites — and then surprised her with the song they sing at the end of choir practice, “May God Bless and Keep You.”

Fotia now sits in the pews, not at the organ bench. But she still thinks about the connection she has felt with the organ since she started playing Mass more than 70 years ago. “When I sat down at that console,” she says, “it was like putting on a pair of slippers.”

Sheila Giuntoli

Letter carrier, 58, bakersfield, calif..

As Sheila Giuntoli made her daily journey along her postal route, she delivered to homes where she witnessed children grow up and houses where she made peace with the family dogs. She passed homes where she attended baby showers and birthday parties. She delivered mail to one yard where, six years ago, a customer asked her out; their four-hour first date at Denny’s led to a backyard wedding and a happy marriage. “It really was a blessing to me,” Giuntoli says about working at the post office. But after 30 years and two hip replacements, it was finally time to retire.

Her last day began with celebration. There was a speech from a post-office official; a Million Mile plaque honoring her 30 years of service driving without an accident; and a potluck with co-workers. Then she set off on her route, where she said goodbye to customers she had known for a decade. “It made me real emotional,” Giuntoli says.

The bigger celebration came that Sunday night, when her children threw her a retirement party. Co-workers past and present danced, took photos in a photo booth and told stories about the old days, before electronic scanners and Amazon packages. Retirement “made me feel like I lost a family member,” says Giuntoli, who plans to keep in touch with people on her old route. “But I know I have to move on and start a new chapter in my life.”

David DuVall

Firefighter, 54, dolton, ill..

For 30 years, David DuVall worked 24 hours on, 48 hours off at the fire station. During those long shifts, his fellow firefighters were his second family: Every third day they would watch the morning news, shop for groceries, play cards, cook chicken Parmesan and grill steak, watch Bears and Blackhawks games — and, of course, fight fires. “It’s the only thing I know,” he says, “so to say I’m gonna be giving it up is a big unknown. Frankly, it’s a little scary.”

After his final shift ended at 7 a.m., DuVall heard one last call over the radio, announcing his retirement. Then he and his wife stepped out of the station together, preceded by a fellow fireman playing the bagpipes. Before them stood a cheering crowd, full of loved ones and firefighters from Dolton and neighboring villages. “I was very humbled by it,” DuVall says.

By 8 a.m., DuVall and his entourage headed to a local bar for drinks, pizza and old stories. After a few hours, the stalwarts headed to another bar near DuVall’s home; he and a few friends closed out the celebrations at a third bar at 12:30 a.m. “It was 16 hours of having a good time,” he says — almost (but not quite) a full firefighter’s shift.

Things to do | service circuit: participants needed for june 16 flag retirement ceremony.

Dube, 69, of Farmington Hills, is looking for participants for a 2 p.m. flag retirement ceremony on Sunday, June 16— which is also Father’s Day — in the veterans section of Hebrew Memorial Park Cemetery, 33230 Gratiot Ave., Roseville.

He is very familiar with the cemetery.

“It’s the largest Jewish cemetery in the Midwest,” Dube said.

“Flag Day is actually June 14 but that is on a Friday and as a traditionally Jewish facility we do not want to get too close to the beginning of Shabbat which starts Friday evening,” he said.

Shabbat is a traditional day of rest.

“There are two ways to honorably retire a flag. The first is by fire and the second is by burying it below the frostline. The first is of course less expensive but considering the times we live in, I certainly do not want the optics of burning American flags,” he said.

He already has about 100 American flags that need to be retired in a patriotic and respectful manner.

“Hebrew Memorial Chapel and Hebrew Memorial Park are donating their services and all interment expenses. An appropriate casket is also being donated for the burial. We will be having full military honors, political speakers, and representation from hopefully every branch of service,” he said.

He particularly would like to have Native American veterans take part, and a drum and bugle corps and to see families use the background of it being Father’s Day as an opportunity for fathers to teach children and grandchildren about patriotism.

“There was this post on Facebook of a Native American holding a little ceremony showing his grandkids how the flag is folded and how to say the Pledge of Allegiance. I love that because I’m a patriot. As a Jewish American I don’t want to burn anything. Collectively we will all honor the flags of our country that have proudly waved as a symbol of our freedoms and our Democracy,” Dube said.

“This is an open event as we show honor to the star-spangled banners that have waved so proudly all these years. We will be having opening prayers, political speakers, speakers about family, love and community spirit, of course with the full military honors,” he said.

“Both of my parents were Holocaust survivors and I actually got to meet the man who saved my father from Buchenwald. I got to meet him personally and shake his hand,” Dube said of the soldier who freed his father. “I hugged him of course.”

Buchenwald Concentration Camp was one of the first and the largest of the concentration camps within Germany’s borders, as they existed in 1937. European Jews from across Europe and the Soviet Union were taken into forced labor situations, particularly the armaments factories, under inhumane conditions. At least 57,000 died there and at related camps. Buchenwald was liberated by U.S. Army soldiers in April 1945. Dwight D. Eisenhower was an Allied commander who visited a Buchenwald sub-camp at the time.

Dube’s best friend is a Native American from the Eastern Shoshone Tribe.

“When he first moved here from Wyoming, he’s not supposed to be alone, so he added my wife and I to his family registry so now we are officially members of the bear clan of the Eastern Shoshone Tribe,” Dube said.

Dube spoke about the Jewish Kabbalah teachings about God, and Jewish similarities to Native Americans.

“The Kabbalah is Jewish mysticism and, the Native Americans, when most Indians say their prayers, and they do it with ankles together, toes spread apart and they don’t wear leather and that is very, very Jewish. With them, it is the connection to the earth, and we don’t wear leather when we pray because we don’t want to insult animals. The Shoshone symbol is the rose. They put that on their shields. In Judaism, the word for rose is Shoshana. It means rose or pretty. My friend and I have all kinds of connections. We’ve been hanging out for 18 years,” he said.

Dube also believes there is a connection between one of the Lost Tribes of Israel and Native Americans.

Traveling Memorial at Selfridge

The Michigan Vietnam Veteran’s Traveling Memorial, circulated by Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154, is part of the Selfridge Military Air Museum’s 2024 Veteran Weekend May 18-19 at the museum located on Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township. May 18 is Armed Forces Day. Displayed along with the traveling memorial to the 2,654 Michigan casualties of the Vietnam War are Historic Military Displays from Zack Howey Collections, and military vehicles from the Great Lakes Military Vehicle Preservation Association. See selfridgeairmuseum.org for base access requirements. There is an admission charge for the indoor Selfridge Military Air Museum; adults $10; seniors and military $8; children 4 to 17 $5.

May is National Military Appreciation Month

There are many activities planned for May, the National Military Appreciation Month proclaimed by Congress for people to publicly show their appreciation for troops past and present.

A Veterans Benefits Fair takes place 9 a.m. to noon May 16 at the Macomb Community College South Campus, 14500  12 Mile Road, Warren. It is about expanded eligibility for VA benefits, registering for VA healthcare, and toxic screening.

The Michigan Veterans Home Chesterfield Township has a Heroic Veterans Walk, Run & Roll 5K starting with the national anthem at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, May 11 on the campus of the home at 47901 Sugarbush Road, Chesterfield. Racers can participate individually or as a team.

Teams of four signed up to be Hero Pushers by assisting a MVHCT resident through a 5k course, by taking turns pushing a chariot-like device in the 9 a.m. Remembrance Walk/Roll.

Post makes home at Grosse Pointe War Memorial

The War Memorial in Grosse Pointe Farms has a new partnership, and it’s with a local American Legion Post 372. The post is now headquartered and will have its meetings and events there.

“The War Memorial is open to all veteran groups,” War Memorial President and CEO Maria Miller said.

“The partnership is a way for us to re-establish our post, promote the values of The War Memorial and the mission of the American Legion,” David Douglas, commander and adjutant at Post 372, said.

One of the American Legion’s recent programs is “Be the One,” a mission to end veteran suicide in partnership with Columbia University to develop training for Legion members who want to learn more about interacting and responding with veterans who may be in crisis.

The American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars have been out in their neighborhoods since the first of May with poppy flower canister collections. Posts take care of their own members in need, and vets in their neighborhoods, and contribute money to other causes in their service areas.

Darryl Strawberry: Mets number retirement ‘does bring a lot of closure’

The former MLB All-Star overcame substance abuse issues that derailed his Hall-of-Fame trajectory and New York Mets career while also plaguing him through his post-playing days. While he got sober and became a pastor where he practices in his home state of Missouri, the 62-year-old suffered a heart attack on his birthday just two months ago on March 12. 

He felt good enough to attend his teammate and friend Doc Gooden’s No. 16 jersey retirement ceremony and Citi Field on April 14 and is doing well enough that he will be able to be the center of attention when the Mets retire his No. 18 jersey on June 1.

“This does bring a lot of closure to my career with the Mets that I’ll always be a Met, no matter how people look at it,” Strawberry said on Monday. “Those eight years were the greatest years of my career and I will always cherish those years. I will always keep those as something very special. There was nothing greater for me to be able to play in Queens and have the success I had.”

Across those eight seasons, Strawberry was a seven-time All-Star, slugged a franchise-record 252 home runs, ranks second with 733 RBI and 580 walks, third with 469 extra-base hits and 662 runs scored, and fourth with a .520 slugging percentage. He was one of the centerpieces of an organization that had its most successful decade in the 1980s, including the 1986 World Series title. 

“You’re not a great player unless you’re on a great team,” Strawberry said. “The thing I look at more than anything was that we had great teams every year going into the season. We had a chance to win. I didn’t finish lower than second in the division on every team besides that first year in 1983… After that, every year, all the way to 1990, I finished no lower than second.”

To get to the majors after being drafted No. 1 overall by the Mets in 1980 was no easy feat despite how awe-inspiring his play was. Strawberry described his first year in the minors down in Lynchburg, TN where he was constantly berated and exposed to racist epithets as one of the most difficult experiences of his ball-playing career. So much so that he considered quitting baseball altogether.

Had it not been for the likes of some of his teammates on that Single-A club, including fellow 1986 champion Kevin Mitchell and Lloyd McClendon, who went on to have a prominent managerial career with the Seattle Mariners and Pittsburgh Pirates. 

“Straw was so blessed and so graceful on the baseball field that a lot of time, it looked like he wasn’t trying,” McClendon said. “But he was so talented, his talent came out and the game was so easy for him at that level and people didn’t quite understand what he was all about. He was a tremendous competitor, he wanted to win, he was 18 years old. What a tremendous talent.”

McClendon was the veteran presence on that Lynchburg team, often called “The Godfather,” by Mitchell, and one of many who will be on hand to celebrate one of Strawberry’s finest accomplishments.

“I’m looking to embrace the fans who have always been there more than anything,” Strawberry said. “Those who stood up and cheered us on in our good times and our bad times. I’m also looking forward to my teammates… that’s family. The organization is family… We all were part of this big family. We came together, we came through this together. you just don’t come along. I might be standing alone and being honored for my success, but the people who helped get me there, those are the people I want to embrace. The fans are a part of that [too].
