My Hobby (Reading Books) – Short Essay

Category: Essays and Paragraphs On May 1, 2019 By Ananda

I love my hobby reading of books . I love reading whatever I can get my hands on. Reading is a good hobby because it helps me to learn a lot of things. I read a lot of books ; fiction, non-fiction, biography, self-help, instructional, etc. I believe everyone should have a reading hobby.

Reading is good because it builds vocabulary , improves reasoning faculties, increases knowledge and teaches different forms of expression. Reading fiction has the ability to transport you to a different world, the world of the author. Your imagination power is enhanced through reading. Readers often tend to become writers because reading activates that part of your brain that leads to coherent thought and expression. The best advice given to writers is to read as much as you can. It is that effective.

Reading is a good hobby because it cultures you. It promotes maturity and readers are able to learn from the experiences of others. Whether through fictional characters or real people, reading equips you with lessons that help you tackle life better. I enjoy reading biographies of scientists, poets, and philosophers. Biographies give insight to the experiences of great personalities and help us to understand their struggles and their achievements. Reading newspapers makes you aware of your surroundings and your duty as a citizen of the world.

Reading builds character . It makes you empathetic to the plight of others. It teaches you how to handle situations with grace, fortitude and reason. It also enables you to communicate complicated experiences through clear and concise expressions. I wouldn’t be able to draft a simple coherent sentence to write if I hadn’t read it somewhere before.

 My Hobby Reading Book

All my school friends have chosen something as their hobby while promoted to high school from the primary standard. I also chose book reading as my hobby. I love to read different kinds of books since my early childhood. I still remember that my mother used to tell me stories at night when I was a child.

Probably my passion for reading storybooks got developed from that time. I prefer reading detective as well as ghost stories. One of my teachers has asked me to read travel stories by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. I have read the book Chander Pahar written by him. The character Shankar from the novel Chander Pahar has become very close to my heart.

My Hobby Reading Book

Everybody in their life pursues something as a hobby. A hobby is something that any person is passionate about. People spend their leisure time pursuing a hobby. Like other people, I have chosen reading books as my hobby. This hobby of mine is not about reading regular academic books. Rather I love to read books on different topics and incidents happening all around the world.

Especially, I love to read books on real travel stories as well as adventures. My habit of reading books developed since I was a child. We had no television or mobile phone in our house but a lot of books. I used to read from them whatever I wanted to. Most of those I hardly understood. I still remember those days when my father used to buy me monthly child magazines like Anandamela and Suktara.

I still love reading comics from those magazines. My favorite comics are Tintin, Chacha Chowdhury as well as Nonte-Fonte. I have recently read a book named Aranyak written by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. It is all about the life experience of the author in a remote rural location of India. In this book, the description of nature is so vivid that any passionate reader will get lost in an amazing experience. All my teachers as well as my parents appreciate this hobby.

Essay on My Hobby Reading Book within 300 Words

A hobby is something that a person pursues to take a break from the same monotonous regular routine. That’s why everyone chooses something as a hobby that they love. Because as wise men say that love can be the ultimate motivation to do something.

So, we all need to choose something as our hobby that we are passionate about. Without passion, all our efforts to do something creative go into the vein. Our hobbies necessarily can enrich us both physically and mentally. That’s why my father says that hobbies are needed to be chosen wisely and very carefully for proper utilization of both time and effort.

Hobbies can be of many different types. Many of my classmates have chosen singing, gardening, painting as their hobbies. My best friend Piyush chose stamps collection as his hobby. These all hobbies bring refreshment to them. Like my friends, I have also chosen reading books as my hobby. I enjoy my hobby the most.

I love to read about everything no matter what topic it is. Since my early childhood, I developed a passion for reading. My parents used to gift me so many books since then. Every year, I go to the Kolkata International Book Fair with my parents. Moreover, After getting promoted to high school from primary, I got exclusive student access to my school library.

Nowadays, I borrow more books from the library than buying them. Not only the school library but my father has also helped me to get a membership of the district library Khardah.

I love reading all kinds of books. But especially I am passionate about reading historical fiction. For this reason, Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay is one of my most favorite writers. Besides these, I also love to read adventure fiction as well as mythologies.

Essay on My Hobby Reading Book within 500 Words

What is a hobby? What a person should choose as a hobby? Before going deep into the discussion of my hobby, let’s talk about the hobby itself. A hobby is something that people do especially in their leisure time mostly for enjoyment. We do not expect to get paid for our hobbies.

These are some habits that come from inside us due to our natural internal tendency as well as passion. Hobbies include a wide range of activities. It can be collecting something like coins or stamps or leaves, fine arts activities like painting, dancing,  Creative works like gardening, writing poetry, etc. Or it can simply be reading books, like what I have chosen as my hobby of life.

At the very beginning, I want to say that I literally admire my hobby, and one of my playschool teachers inspired me to fall in love with reading books when I was at my very early age. I still remember she used to bring me many kinds of colorful interesting books full of amazing stories as well as pictures.

At that age, I fond of those kinds of books. Later on, I came to know that those books are known as comics. I have read so many comics since my early childhood. Tintin, Phantom, Dennis the Menace, Hada Bhoda, Nonte-Phonte is a few among them. My parents always appreciate my hobby of reading books. For me, reading any book is the way of my utmost relaxation.

When I get tremendously bored of my regular monotonous life, at that point my storybooks help me to travel in some dream location being a part of some exciting adventure of imagination. After going to high school, I got exclusive access to my school’s students’ library and a different world opened there for me. From then, I borrow books so many kinds of books from my school library and read them thoroughly.

Here, I would like to mention my school librarian sir Mr. Paresh Pathak who helps me to choose the proper book according to my age and reading tendency. From my school library, I have read many works of great authors like Guru Rabindranath Tagore, Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, Satyajit Ray, and many more.

Recently, I have developed a special interest in magic realism. Very recently, I was reading a work of the great Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The name of the book is very famous One Hundred Years of Solitude. It is an amazing work that led me to a different fantasy world along with the dark humorous touch of eternal truth.

I’ve also read some works of Franz Kafka. His famous work The Metamorphosis will be very close to my heart always. For these also all credit goes my school librarian sir. He first suggested me to read something unconventional out of the box.

I got the first book of Gabriel Garcia Marquez from him. Moreover, I learned about magic realism from him as well. I believe that no matter what happens with human beings, but books, stories, and realization are eternal. They will never abandon me in my entire life.

That was all about essay writing on my hobby reading books. Here in the session, I have tried to write some essays on the very topic following every method and all possible perspectives. Moreover, I have also tried to write them for students of different classes. Besides, I maintained the word limit relevant for various examinations.

Hope you found this session helpful as per your requirement. Let us know your valuable opinion as well as suggestions for this session in the comment section below. Thank you; see you again very soon.

Why is Reading a Good Hobby? [11 Reasons Explained!]

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links. – meaning I may get a commission if you decide to purchase through my links, at no additional cost to you.

If you have some free time and you are considering taking up a hobby, then perhaps reading should be something that you consider. But, people sometimes can not understand why reading, which is often considered only a passive activity at best, can be a hobby.

Reading is considered a good hobby because it leads to the all-round development of your brain and personality. Reading can be done by anyone, at any age. It has a low barrier for entry as it is inexpensive. Moreover, reading also has substantial health benefits apart from enabling recreation.

In this article, we’ll first establish whether reading is a hobby or a habit, or both, and then we’ll discuss eleven reasons why it is considered a very good hobby.

Is Reading a Hobby or a Habit?

Reading can be both a hobby and a habit . Over time, if you indulge in reading a bit too much and you can’t live without it, reading can also become an addiction!

As a hobby, it is an activity that is normally done during leisure time for enjoyment. But that is not the whole truth.

Reading can easily develop into a habit and for many people even a passion.

To understand the difference between a hobby and a habit, let’s look at the dictionary definitions. According to Merriam-Webster, a hobby is “ a pursuit outside one’s regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation .” Reading fits this definition.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, “ a habit is something that you do often and regularly ,” and in the Collins Dictionary, a habit is described as “ an action which someone finds difficult to stop doing. ”

In practical terms, this means that if you start to read at specific times daily, for instance before going to bed, you’ve developed a reading habit.

Why is Reading a Good Hobby?

woman standing and reading a book wondering if it burns calories

There are many reasons why reading is regarded as a very good hobby. Let’s look at only eleven of the reasons why you should also consider making reading your hobby!

1. Reading is Inexpensive

Reading is one of the most inexpensive hobbies you can have. You don’t need any special equipment or a specialized area or room.

The books you are using when practicing your reading hobby are also often available from a library for free, and if you’ve bought some books to read, they can generally be resold or swapped later.

At most libraries, your only expense would be your annual membership fee, if any. You can also join a reading club where the members swap books amongst themselves.

When you don’t want to keep specific books and you can’t swap them, you can always put them up for sale online or at your local fair.

2. Gain Enormous Knowledge

Your reading hobby lets you gain enormous knowledge. Every book you read leaves information in your brain. Your brain stores all the information that you encounter every day.

So, whatever you’ve read always forms part of your memory and can be recalled and used by your brain when needed.

The more you read, the more information is stored and you’ll discover that over time you’ll acquire a comprehensive general knowledge. This very benefit of reading can make you rich someday!

Thus, the hobby that you are practicing for enjoyment, also unconsciously enhances your conversation skills and you can partake in discussions regarding various topics.

Many hobbyists have a lot of knowledge about their hobbies but reading is the one hobby that expands your overall general knowledge.

3. Travel the World Without Spending a Nickle!

With reading, you can travel the world without leaving your chair. You can read about places that you may never be able to visit in real life.

When reading travel books and travel journals you experience and enjoy the world through somebody else’s eyes. Another way of “traveling by book” is to read biographies. Places, where people have lived, are often described in detail in biographies.

Even reading fiction lets you travel the world. Every story’s plot, except when it is a fantasy or science fiction story, is set somewhere on the globe. As you read the story you get information regarding different places enabling you to envisage the towns, cities, and other scenery.

If you normally utilize your local library to get your books to read, this type of traveling all over the world will cost you nothing!

4. Brain Development

Reading helps to develop our brains . Researchers have found that reading stimulates specific brain activities. Scientists and researchers can measure and analyze the actual brain reaction when we are reading.

In an important study done at Emory University researchers could pinpoint what parts of the brain are influenced when reading.  They found heightened connectivity in the left temporal cortex. This is the area in the brain associated with language receptivity.

This brain connectivity influences the way you handle real-life situations. So, apart from being a pastime, reading is causing something productive to happen in your brain – every time you read.

5. Can be Done in Groups!

essay about reading hobby

Although it is generally emphasized that you can practice your reading hobby anywhere and on your own, your hobby can also be a very effective way to socialize. Reading and book-relevant discussions are frequently done in groups.

In almost every community there are reading groups or book clubs. The members of these groups and clubs regularly get together to discuss books, swap books, and read together.

In other words, reading is one of the very few hobbies that can be enjoyed on your own but your joys can also be shared with others.

6. Reading Can Be Done Anywhere, Anytime!

Reading is a hobby that can be enjoyed anywhere and at any time whatever the weather and circumstances.

This is unlike other hobbies that have to be done either outdoors or indoors or need specific venues like ice rinks or are influenced by weather conditions.

To put it simply, if you have your book with you and there is enough light enabling you to see the words on the page (and your glasses if you need them to read) you can practice your hobby.

The only aspect you perhaps don’t have control over is whether there is enough light to read. It might be a good idea to always have a small battery light nearby!

7. Reading is Inclusive

Literally, anybody that can read can adopt “reading” as a hobby. Nobody controls whether you are reading too fast or too slow or comments on your comprehension level.

Unlike many other hobbies where a certain degree of skill is required to make a success or even to join if it is a group activity, you are the only one deciding whether you want to make reading your hobby.

Even small children who cannot yet read can also start with their “reading hobby.” By reading stories to them frequently and letting them “read with you” they can enjoy their stories just like you enjoy your novels.

8. Reading Expands Your Horizons

Your reading hobby expands your horizons like few other hobbies can do. Reading introduces you to new and different things to experience and enjoy.

There are so many diverse subjects to read about that you can get new ideas on virtually any topic. Even when you read fiction you get other perspectives on many everyday matters.

Without reading you would most probably never have thought about some of the things you are doing now or what you’ve put on your bucket list.

9. Reading Grows Your Vocabulary

Another aspect that makes reading as a hobby different from most other hobbies is that when you read, you are expanding your vocabulary.

When you read, you are “in conversation” with people – whether it is with the characters in the novel you are reading, the storyteller, or the professional sharing scientific knowledge with you.

And all these “conversation partners” use words that are not always known to you, and use well-known words in ways you’ve never done before.

The result is that your vocabulary and the knowledge of how to use grammar correctly, are expanded every time you read. This helps you to speak and write properly.

With many other hobbies, like woodworking, for instance, you don’t have this positive influence from other people when practicing your hobby.

10. Reading Enhances Your Imagination

In the digital world we’re living in nowadays there are few hobbies that enhance our imagination. And, reading definitely improves imagination !

When you turn on a television or other electronic device, there is no need to imagine anything. Everything is placed before you in a visual setting.

Reading, however, is different. You have to create your own visual images as you read. This is a skill needed to enhance your ability to envisage real-world situations and to find solutions for complex problems.

11. Reading is a Peaceful Hobby

Man reading a book in bed at home

Reading is a peaceful hobby. One can do it in silence and just enjoy the book.  The serenity of hearing nothing but one’s inner thoughts can inspire a peaceful feeling.

You also don’t make any annoying or hard sounds when reading and thus don’t bother anyone around you when reading.

Reading is really a hobby giving you inner peace and you can practice it anywhere without disturbing others.

12 Reasons Why Reading Is A Good Hobby (Why Should You Start Reading?)

' src=

This blog post contains affiliate links, no extra cost to you, thank you for your support!

Growing up, most of us were persuaded to read more instead of watching TV by parents or school teachers because reading is a “good hobby”

But why reading? And is it really that good for us?

Reading is a good hobby because it improves our mental health, general knowledge, writing skills and you can even make a career out of it. Books can also take you to places you’ve never been before!

Let’s explore some reasons on why reading is a good hobby and if you haven’t started reading already – why should you start reading?

Advantages of Reading: Why Reading Is A Good Hobby

Here are some advantages of reading books as a hobby:

1. Reading Reduces Screentime

Reading can be considered as an indirect screen time detox , since you will lessen your screen time by reading physical books.

Even if you choose to read using an e-reader like kindle , it is not as harsh on the eyes compared to your laptop or phone.

An easy way to reduce your screen time is by following a tip by one of my favourite productivity Youtubers, Ali Abdaal .

He says to put a kindle by your bedside and leave your phone in a different room before bed time so you read more instead of staring at a screen before bed.

2. Reading Sharpens Your Wit

Reading is hobby that stimulates the mind. The mind will sharpen from all the plots we’ve read, characters we engage with and words we’ve learned.

The mind is like a sponge. The more we read, the more we absorb and the more knowledgeable we become.

Besides interesting plots and characters, books have the capability to widen horizons, enabling you to explore different cultures from around the world.

The world is at your fingertips, one book at a time.

Moreover, non fiction books will ensure that you are well equipped with the knowledge of theories, literature and other global events and occurrences that will gain a great deal of knowledge.

For example, I recently read Atomic Habits and it had taught me so much about breaking bad habits and forming good ones with tiny actionable steps.

3. Enhances Imagination

Reading (especially if you read genres like fantasy, thriller and mystery) can help you have a more creative imagination.

Being creative can help you in many areas of life that require problem solving such as being in school or at work.

Besides just helping you solve life issues, an enhanced imagination is an added advantage if you want to become a published author one day.

There are many careers besides writing that need a creative mind – such as, being an artist, film director, song producer and more. Reading inspires you to look at things differently, hence the imagination skills.

4. Reading Can Be Relaxing

Although this point applies to everyone, it is especially true for adults with busy schedules.

Adults who are busy and are constantly trying to chase something forget to be present in the moment. Reading is a mindful activity with many mental health benefits .

Besides that, insomniacs and people who are constantly struggling to fall asleep, reading before bed time can help calm the mind.

Every individual is different, but there’s no harm in trying to add reading to your night-time routine by leaving a book by your bedside instead of reaching for your phone and scrolling through TikTok.

5. Reading Allows You To Travel Through Books

why is reading a good hobby

Although fun, travelling is an expensive, energy-driven and time-consuming hobby. One of the best reasons why reading is a great hobby is because it allows us to travel without getting off the couch.

We get to explore different countries, cities and cultures. Besides, if you do plan to travel to a certain location, you can always read books set in the location or books about the destination.

I’ve written a few articles on books to read before you travel such as, 15 Best Books Set In Indonesia You Must Read .

6. Reading Is A Fun Way To Make Friends

Finding like-minded individuals who read are a great way to make new friends.

You don’t even need to like the same books or as they do. If you like different books from them, the more you’ll have to share and discuss!

One way you can find more readers to connect with is by starting a bookstagram.

I have a whole section on bookstagram tips . Plus, you could also also join buddy reads to discuss the same books you’re reading.

Besides finding friends who read online, you can also always find them at a book cafe, library or book fair!

7. Reading Is Not An Expensive Hobby

I know what you’re thinking – books are getting expensive these days.

But how many books do you purchase and actually end up reading? In reality, you read way less than the books you buy. Reading and buying books are two separate hobbies!

Reading is a simple hobby – you only need a book and a comfortable place to read. You don’t even need to purchase books, you can always read for free at a library or a book cafe.

If you really want to buy books and save money – try subscribing to an audiobook subscription like Libro FM (use my link and get a free book) and audible .

Kindle Unlimited is also a good way to save money and read more books!

8. Reading Can Help You Stay Motivated

why is reading a good hobby

If you’re in need of motivation when studying or working on a project – reading self-help books can help you stay motivated.

Sometimes, these books aren’t just about motivation but they can help you with your challenges that stop you from staying motivated for long periods

Example, Atomic Habits talk about taking tiny steps to build habits and books like Don’t Worry (my recent read, checkout my review) can help you combat anxiety which will indirectly help you stay motivated.

9. Reading Can Make You Money

Besides being a good hobby, reading can actually make you money.

If you choose to be a book influencer such as a bookstagrammer or book blogger , you can actually earn money from your passion for reading.

Besides, being an author or working in publication is also a potential career path.

10. Reading Can Be Done Anytime Or Anywhere

Honestly, you can read anytime and anywhere.

Reading is so accesible because of apps like the kindle apps that allows you to read your kindle books on phone.

Plus, don’t lie – you’ve probably read a book before on your phone in the toilet or even on the treadmill when you hit the gym.

11. Reading Can Help Increase Empathy

Reading fiction gives you insight on different plot points and characters which allows you to empathise with different people in real life.

Besides, there are many self-help and non-fiction books that helps us learn more about ourselves and the human race so we can better empathise with people.

12. Reading Helps With Family Bonding

This is something i’ve personally noticed growing up.

I’ve had uncles and aunties who love reading and soon their children also takes interest in the hobby. Together, they go out for coffee and read as a family.

Besides, i’ve recently discovered a family book blog where the couple and their child reads as well

Is Reading A Hobby?

Yes reading is still a hobby despite in the modern “screen” times of Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram. In fact, screen time does not always mean watching or consuming media but many readers these days read via their ipad, kindle or other e-readers.

Is Reading A Good Or Bad Habit?

Reading is mostly a good habit, especially when done moderately. It helps you improve your general knowledge and writing skills. It can also act as a great down time for a night routine or be part of a refreshing morning routine.

Can Reading Become Addicting?

Yes, reading can become an addiction. The term Bibliomania is best described for this condition. Human nature is such that whatever we seek pleasure in, we tend to get hooked to it.

Final Thoughts: Why is Reading a Good Hobby?

Reading as a hobby is great because of the many benefits it brings to me (ok fine, it’s not always about getting smarter or improving your mental health but it also helps me escape reality).

At the end of day, reading is supposed to be a fun hobby. If you feel pressured to read a certain book or feel like you should be reading as much as some book influencers are on social media, know that you are not alone.

Many of us feel that pressure but know that reading should bring you joy, not stress!

Give Wings to your Creative Side with Hobbies

Hobbies play a very crucial role in everyone's life. Whenever we are free, it is good to follow our hobbies. It makes us occupied, and we do not feel idle. Every person finds their happiness and enjoys doing some kind of activity in their leisure time, these activities are known as hobbies.

My Special Hobby

My favourite hobby is watching TV. Whenever I have free time, I love watching Television. It never obstructs my studies. Hobbies help us to expand our knowledge, and it teaches us several things. First, I like to finish all my school homework and then start watching TV. This lightens my mood and sparks up the excitement inside me, as it increases my curiosity about the world. Watching different useful stuff on TV enhances my knowledge horizons and gives me lots of joy.

Benefit of My Hobby

It is a good habit because watching TV escorts a lot of knowledge in various fields. There are several channels on TV, which represent worldwide affairs. I watch the news and I like channels, such as animal planet, discovery channel or another informative channel. These channels increase my curiosity and encourage me to learn about different aspects of life.

I interestingly watch a cartoon network that provides me with creative and new ideas to make cartoons and arts. Some of my favourite comics are Mr Bean, Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo and many more. Many art-themed cartoons, like The Pink Panther and SpongeBob, inspire me to draw them. Primarily, the artworks of comics attract me and inspire me to decorate my scrapbooks with their figures.

Parents Find Hobbies Useful

My parents praise my hobby, and they are also happy when they see me watching national and international news and several events on the TV. Moreover, they feel proud when they listen to the news update from me.

Now, I study in class with two and eight years old girls. Creating jokes, sitting idle and spending time roaming around is unproductive, according to my parents. My parents made sure that I developed my hobbies from childhood. Therefore, they encouraged me to create some good habits.

Watching TV in a proper way gives you so many important roles. It helps us to make something creative. It provides us with knowledge about different places, their cultures, climatic conditions and especially their history. Furthermore, it widens our imagination by showing imaginary characters from the marvellous Disney World and Jungle Book.

Importance of Hobby

Getting the latest updates and gaining knowledge about today’s incident is so important. It provides us with a lot of benefits, which help us in developing our knowledge and thoughts. It also enhances our minds of thoughts, ideas, and experiences. Hobbies are all about interest and can only be done in our leisure time. These activities help us in keeping our mind and body in a relaxed and refreshed state.

Moreover, hobbies also increase our productivity and improve our overall health. It protects us from the risk of dementia and also protects us from sadness in our life. It also helps in our overall development and ignites our hidden talents and passions. So it is essential to have hobbies in our lives.

Several Aspects of Watching TV as an Hobby

Watching TV is not only about fun and joy; it also introduces us to new characters and stories to analyse. Every show comes with a new set of characters and stories that tickles our brains. As a hobby, you can compare these different storylines and their characters with one another.

There are different types of programs on TV that are so crucial to enhancing our awareness about worldwide matters. TV channels also telecast different types of educational programs to improve our knowledge of history, science, economics, math, culture, and geography etc. In such programs, you get to analyse the different acting styles, writing and overall good and bad behaviours of various communities, their thoughts and cultures.

Different Genres on TV

Each TV show has different types of content or genres. These TV genres are sci-fi, dramas, adventurous shows, action, animations and reality shows. While Watching TV, it is not necessary to stick to any one genre and thus, you get to explore various other genres.

And this is the most valuable part of my hobby. Television brings together numerous elements of imagination and ideas from different genres and allows me to explore them.

Some Other Hobbies

You can have more than one hobby, as they are not restricted to any particular limit. All the things that you have an interest in can be regarded as a hobby. A person can have multiple areas of interest and have more than one activity as a hobby.

I, too, have more than one hobby. Other than watching TV, I like to listen to music. This helps me keep myself calm after doing lots of work and gives my ears and heart a soothing effect.

Besides these, I also have hobbies, such as reading comic books, painting, writing narrative stories, and maintaining a scrapbook. These activities make me happy and enhance my hidden qualities. Writing and reading boost my imagination. Along with these activities, I participate in gardening in my leisure time because I love to plant new and colourful flowers.

Moreover, I like dancing and singing. These are the activities I often do whenever I find time after completing my studies and homework. I do participate in singing and dancing competitions as well because I like to sing and dance. My teachers and parents always appreciate and encourage me to pursue my hobbies.

Conclusion

Every human being on this Earth is unique. Not only in terms of appearance but also for inherent characteristics. All the people work, think, talk, interpret, act, etc. , in countless ways. These are all the things which express me. One needs to have a good command of themselves before going to write something about their life. Life is meant to be lived avidly and with a proper visualization to do good for your fellow beings. Keeping this in mind, I have always desired to serve my people in whatever capacity I can.

My hobby is reading books. Reading a book is one of my favorite pass times and since I work with words for a living it is also one of my favorite work tasks. There are no words that can describe my admiration and respect for the written word and the modest book that houses them. Even though great thinker of antiquity like Socrates despised the written word calling it unresponsive and dead we have to give out thanks to its ability to conserve knowledge for generations.

My hobby reading books is the best way to escape from the torment of the world and to rest in a world of imagination. Undisturbed by the troubles of my life, my mind can rest from all the stress it goes through every day and find comfort in the words of wise writers or happiness in those that like more light-hearted topics.

Not only do I read books but I also collect them and spend endless hours searching for the right edition for their collection. I even save up money so that I can buy books and extend my library or spend fortunes on rare historic manuscripts.

The fact of the matter is that there is no better way for me to rest and at the same time practice my brain by reading a book, so as far as my hobby reading books goes this way, it is the best pass time I can have. Believe me, once you start exploring the sea of stories written on paper you will never want to stop exploring.

Hobby is something that is of our interest and keeps us engaged in our free time with a free mind. A good habit will not only help us to escape from our daily cores but also keeps us peaceful. Studies prove that practicing a good hobby will keep us away from many mind related problems and loneliness as well.

Reading books as My Hobby:

Hobby is something that develops with us from an early age. I find happiness in reading books in my lonely time to free my mind of stress and study pressures. My hobby is reading books. Reading books is the best knowledge gaining hobby. My hobby reading books has helped me to improve my language too. When I start reading, I create my own imaginary and creative world to travel with the story.

Reading thriller novels will help me to travel to that world with mystery and stories with adventures will improve my creative side, as I am constantly imagining the scenario that’s happening in the story and so on. Thus my hobby reading books interest me the most, has helped me to understand the language better, create noble and ideal thoughts in me and more.

Inspirational and instructive books have always inspired my growing mind to follow the better path to achieve my life goal. By reading books I can be updated on the present world. A person with understandability towards anything will be able to acquire their desired heights more easily and books are molding me to be one.

Living amidst books makes me feel happier and loneliness has never touched me at any point in my life. Books have become my best friend since childhood and I can feel the positive changes they create in me.

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

We have all heard of this adage time and again and it also throws light on how important it truly is to make sure that we all have a hobby.

The game of cricket:

Well, my hobby is cricket as I have been enjoying this sport since a very tender age. I remember gazing from the winnow of my room and watching the grown-ups immerse themselves in a game of cricket. I would spend hours watching them and remembering the different shots, the way the bowlers threw the ball at different angles and even imagined myself excelling at cricket.

The need for passion:

I believe that regardless of what we choose, it is important for each one of us to have a hobby. My hobby is something which keeps me going and it adds to my verve and energy. If you develop a good hobby, it will make sure that you would have something to unwind your mind.

When I go out to play cricket, in that moment, I do not think of anything else as I am cool, composed and nothing else matters. So, if you have not yet found your thing which you can truly call as a hobby, I suggest you do so.

I knew my hobby since a tender age and it soon grew into my passion and I can say with utmost pride that I am quite good at cricket. When you truly love something, your zest will give you the kick to excel in it too.

I have a lot of hobbies to pass my time. One of such things is drawing. Even when I was a little child, drawing has always made me happy. Sitting quietly in a place, I can draw for hours. It keeps me busy and relaxes my mind. There is a little secret to why I love drawing so much.

As a person, I am less talkative. Because of that, there are very few friends in my life. The thing is that, instead of speaking out everything, I prefer to express my emotions silently. And drawing just helps me do that.

Sketching is not merely a pass time to me. God has given me a beautiful way to share my thoughts and feelings through drawing. It is an art that becomes my voice when I wish to be quiet. Moreover, drawing also helps me connect more with nature. Trees, birds, animals, rivers, clouds are some of the favorite things that I like to draw.

My art teacher praises the passion I have for drawing. She also appreciates the blending of shades and strokes of brushes when I paint something. My parents and friends always encourage me for the same.

I wish to pursue drawing for the rest of my life. It is my dream to become a true artist one day and that is only possible with regular practice and devotion.

Introduction:

My hobby is dancing. Dancing is the art of performing purposefully selected sequence of movements by humans. Dance is a beautiful hobby that slowly builds in an individual. Dancing becomes a hobby to people who like to listen to music because as they listen, they tend to accompany the beats with dance moves. Although some people might be enjoying music but they are unable to dance because dancing is a performance that requires a skill that not everyone can master.

How it began:

Ever since I was a child, I have been chubby and so my parents had to sign me up for dancing lessons so that I can get physically fit. The dancing lessons seemed enjoyable but when I joined the first class I was unable to dance. I developed a strong determination to learn how to dance because by nature I do not like to accept failure. Within a few weeks, I had learned how to dance and it grew in me and dancing became my hobby. I would dance everywhere and that is how I grew fond of my hobby dancing.

Benefits of My Hobby Dancing:

Through my hobby dancing, I was able to lose weight and my chubbiness was gone. The regular dancing that I have been doing has kept me fit. Sometimes I make money from dancing especially during the holidays. Dancing at events or festivals earns me money. At school, I have won awards because I participate in dance as an extracurricular activity. It is a great feeling to have dancing as my hobby because it is what I love and enjoy.

Who are we without our hobbies? Apart from our physical appearances, the collection of the things we do is what makes us distinct from the next person. While there are things we do simply because we have to, we do others because we love to.

Hobbies are things we do because we have a natural inclination to do so. They give us so much pleasure that we would spend our life time doing it. This is why people try to build their respective professions around their hobbies. By so doing, an ordinarily difficult task suddenly becomes simple.

My love for sewing:

Though I have a lot of hobbies, my love for sewing stands out from the crowd. It all started when my mother bought a sewing machine when I was younger. I was immediately fascinated by the mechanical excellence of the equipment. First, it was the way the machine rolled. Then I was puzzled about the thread movement and how it miraculously turned torn pieces into masterpieces.

Subsequently, my curiosity became a source of entertainment. I would play around the machine and time would disappear while I do so. I would cut my old clothing and run it through the machine just to see it move. Slowly and surely, I became enchanted with sewing so much that it dominated my thought and became my hobby.

Now, I would not leave a single week without creating something adorable with the sewing machine. A few moments spent away from this intriguing environment feels like an eternity. What’s more, I have found that sewing has a therapeutic effect on me. It helps clear my thought and keeps me focused on a single task. Though there is financial gain in this endeavor I do it simply for the thrill.

Me and my hobby:

Sewing is my hobby and it is refreshing to me but over time I realized that by virtue of my love for this craft I became interested in related fields. First, I have to create a sketch of what to sew. This process is a purely creative one. As I draw, I can picture what I would do to the real fabric when I eventually get on the machine. I also visualize what the eventual dress would look like on me or whoever would eventually wear it.

Then, I cut pieces of the fabric as outlined in my drawings. The cutting stage is mainly about precision. The materials have to be systematically shaped in such a way that it fits the measurement taken. Any deviation from this would lead to undesired results.

Finally, the pieces are carefully held together by the automated needle of the machine. This is the most fulfilling part of the process. This is so because seeing the conceptualized idea come to bare serves as an icing on the cake. However, the feeling of excitement I experience after the cloth is made quickly evaporates. I am immediately left with the desire to start over again. Though the process might seem mechanical or even uninspiring to an onlooker, I wouldn’t trade my hobby of sewing for anything else in the world.

Any activity which one does for pleasure is called as a hobby. It can anything ranging from reading books, spending time with your pets, travelling around, talking to new people, just anything which gives immense pleasure to a person and relieves a person of the tensions of daily life. I too have a hobby which is quite common in the world as so many people do it.

It is from here that I gathered interest in reading newspapers. Overall these years, I have the pleasure of reading the Harry Potter series, which still remain the best, The Shiva Trilogy from Amish Tripathi, books from good authors both from India and abroad.

Types of Hobbies:

There are a lot of different types of hobbies that we can show interest in and develop, examples of hobbies are singing, dancing, playing outdoor or indoor games, drawing, collecting antiques, bird watching, writing, photography, reading, eating, playing, sports, music, gardening, cooking, watching TV, talking and any other activity you can think of. Our different hobbies that become a source of earning money and a means of livelihood and we can build a very successful career out of our hobbies. A hobby is meant to be enjoyed in our leisure time but it can become a lot more than that.

My Hobbies:

One popular misconception is that we can have only one hobby; this is totally not true. As a child growing up, I loved and enjoyed cooking and I would spend hours watching cooking programmes and watching my parents cook. Sooner rather than later, I also started trying out different recipes and dishes I had seen on TV and sometimes even tweaked a few things and made delicacies of my own. Cooking gave my childhood so much joy and bliss which made it one of my hobbies, I could cook all day and I get just happy at the thought of trying out a new recipe. Another hobby of mine is soccer which is kind of an accidental hobby (if there is anything like that). I had always loved watching football (or soccer) and was pretty good at analysis and understanding of the game but I never really tried playing the sport because of my first hobby that is cooking which meant I was more of the indoor person. Fate would have it that one of my close friends was on the varsity soccer team and all the goalkeepers got injured so he told me about an open audition for the position of goalkeeper and I just decided to try out. I was wonderful at the try outs and got a spot on the varsity soccer team, I became a pretty brilliant goalkeeper and I look forward to every opportunity to get on the field of play. There is this feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction I get anytime I am on the field of play. It is very possible to have more than one hobby so open yourself to the possibilities of all the different activities and interesting things around us.

My Favourite Hobby:

My favourite hobby is gardening. I spend most of my leisure time when I am not cooking or playing soccer in gardening. Gardening has been a huge source of knowledge, education, delight and entertainment to me. I have had the opportunity to learn a lot of new things on flowers, plants, vegetables, butterflies and even birds from gardening. My parents have a little plot of land where I pursue and practice this hobby. I have different varieties of vegetables, flowers and a few fruit trees in my garden. Some of the vegetables I grow are carrots, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, radish, chillies, bitter gourd, etc. I also grow flowers like jasmine, roses, lilies, merry gold, carnation, poppies, flux and forget-me-not. These flowers make the garden a delight to behold and give the garden a soothing fragrance.

There are a few fruit-trees in the garden including banana, mango, guava and pomegranate. The garden is visited often by quite a number of birds and there are even some birds are live permanently on the fruit trees. The chirping sound made by the birds and their sweet music gives the garden the perfect condition and makes it the ideal place to be.

Gardening has also helped my other hobby (soccer) by keeping me mentally alert, physically fit and very fresh. The ambience of the garden is highly invigorating, fresh and soothing; there is calmness to the atmosphere of the garden. The processes and activities involved in gardening include weeding, digging, grafting, cutting, maturing, watering and the tilling of the soil. All of these activities get me the needed physical exercise I need to make my body fit and keep me sharp mentally.

A lot of family members and friends appreciate my hobby gardening. Over the years, I have been able to develop skills needed in gardening, sometimes; my father also helps me maintain the garden. I have a worthy and wonderful collection of magazines and books on vegetables, flowers, fruit trees and also gardening overall. It is quite a wonderful experience to watch plants grow, develop and blossom.

I am not full of knowledge in gardening; sometimes, I get advice and help from a professional gardener so as to know the right thing to do. I spend a large chunk of my money purchasing manure, seeds, fertilisers, books on gardening and gardening tools and implements. I try to catch all the programmes on television about gardening, I visit plant and flower shows and also fruit and vegetable exhibition. I try my possible best to balance all my hobbies, studies and other engagements without hurting any one of them for the others.

Gardening motivates me and gives me a sense of purpose about what I can achieve with my life. Once I am gardening, I forget about all of my worries, troubles and problems of the world. I am my happiest when I am working in the garden or when I get to give my friends and my family members fruits from the garden.

Here is a sample essay on my hobby that students can refer to.

Routine work makes us monotonous. To break it we often look for interesting and exciting things to do. Hobbies are the best way to divert attention side by side with work. We need entertainment from time to time. At such times a good hobby is very useful. Hobbies provide recreation. They entertain us and at the same time are valuable in the sense that they develop a personality.

My hobby is singing. People often resort to gardening, reading, stamp collecting, bird watching, etc. However, I love to listen to music and also to sing. I have a large collection of tapes and I listen to all kinds of music. My collection ranges from classical music to Rock and from Indian music to the Western one. My hobby is to listen to these songs carefully and then to learn them. I sit with a paper and a pen and write down the lyrics of the songs that I hear. Then I hum along and soon I know the tunes too.

I switch the tape recorder off and then I pretend to be the singer myself. I sing the song exactly the way it was sung by the playback singer. I succeed at times and sometimes fail. Once I feel that I have begun to sing perfectly I tape my own voice. When I listen to the recording I listen objectively and try to locate my faults in singing. This helps me to improve on my singing and I find that also helps me to use my talent to my advantage.

Whenever I go to a party, my friends persuade me to sing. Once I begin, the party livens up, people join in and the place is filled with the sound of music. I feel proud of myself and my friends also praise me because they feel that I become the life of the party. I play the guitar and sing when we go on a picnic or when I have a free period in school.

My hobby makes me happy and also brings joy to all my relatives and friends. It is necessary that everybody must have some hobby. It educates man, gives him pleasure, and helps him to utilize his free time fruitfully. If a person has no hobby, his spare time will turn him into a useless, irritated and restless person. “An idle mind is a devil’s workshop”. It is, therefore, essential to remain busy even during leisure hours. Hobbies always come to one’s help.

The role of reading in building and progressing society

Reading has a great role in building and progressing society, and I will mention that in the essay on my hobby reading books.

  • The progress that humans have reached is the result of reading and knowledge of previous sciences, and what scientists have reached in terms of laws, theories and concepts.
  • Human life is always evolving and progressing, due to the benefit from the sciences of previous civilizations, their way of life and the way they deal with difficulties.
  • It is important to acknowledge that the scientific progress that scientists have reached in this era is the result of the research and experiences of previous scientists.

Reading develops creativity

One of the most important benefits of reading is that it develops creativity and innovation in the reader, as reading gives a person new ideas and experiences from others as well.

And in the essay on my hobby reading books, I will show how reading has a great advantage in creativity and innovation, and that reading increases a person’s knowledge, and thus increases his self-confidence, and commands the respect of others.

Reading is food for the mind

The mind needs nourishment, and its nourishment is reading, because reading develops the mind and makes you more aware.

And in the essay on my hobby reading books, it becomes clear to you the importance of reading in building both the individual and society.

Reading makes the individual more accepting of others, and also gives him the ability to deal with different nationalities of people.

Also, reading increases a person’s self-confidence, and helps him in forming good social relationships, and reading increases a person’s culture, and he becomes tactful and speaks fluently without shame.

At the end of the essay on my hobby reading books, I presented you with several models, a short essay on the hobby of reading, and a paragraph on the importance of reading for the individual and society, and the preference of previous nations over us. And you must know that the humanities are cumulative sciences, and that each scientist adds to what the previous scholars have reached.

Ella Holm and hobby horse Fede compete during the Finnish hobby horsing championships in Vantaa, April 2017.

Hobby horse competition is no joke for young riders

British Show Pony Society announcement on 1 April was genuine, with £300 prize for winners

It was a story that many people thought was a quirky April fool when it appeared on the website of Horse & Hound magazine.

But it is no joke that the British Show Pony Society (BSPS) is to “embrace the hobby horse craze” by introducing a competition with £300 prizes for the young winners.

The sport, which is popular in Finland and increasingly spreading to other parts of the world, involves riding a toy horse made from a wooden stick with one end decorated to look like a pony’s head.

Riders – usually young girls – compete by trotting, galloping and cantering around a ring, sometimes leaping over jumps.

At the BSPS championships children will each perform a freestyle show of no more than two minutes, with 50 marks for coordination, balance, energy and body control. A further 50 marks will be awarded for “overall performance of the show with energy and appeal”.

Competitors will be divided into three age classes: three to five, six to nine, and 10 to 12.

The rules state: “There is no specific dress code but trainers or gym shoes should be flexible to point your toes. Your hobby horse can be plaited or unplaited.”

A BSPS spokesperson said: “The BSPS wanted to embrace the hobby horse craze as an addition to our fabulous children’s entertainment programme, which sets the society apart from others in providing all-round family fun.”

Hobbyhorsing competitors often give their wooden companions a name and a backstory, including the breed of their horse, its bloodline and temperament.

The BSPS said: “We are a children’s society and, as such, it is important to ensure that we make sure our championship shows are fun for all our smaller members. We hope that this will raise awareness of our extensive children’s entertainment programme at both the BSPS summer and winter championships.

“All the children’s entertainment is free and includes a playbus, craft room, iBox bus, football competition, fancy dress, disco and fashion show, and parties for the adults, and enables the BSPS to stand out against other major society shows.”

Horse & Hound magazine, which broke the news on 1 April, was forced to issue a statement on its website clarifying that it was a real story.

It stated: “This year, our April fool story was about the earliest example of ‘matchy-matchy’ horse and rider gear , dating from about 35000BC.

“While most readers correctly identified this as a spoof story to mark the day, some assumed that the story published later the same day about the BSPS introducing a hobby horse championship was also an April fool, when it was not.”

My Favourite Hobby

If I were to pick one favourite hobby of mine out of the many I have, I will definitely pick gardening. I developed a taste for dancing when I was very young. The way my feet moved to the rhythm of the music convinced my parents that I was a born dancer. Dancing is very uplifting as well as economical.

I have always had a love for music and dance. However, I never realized the utter joy they bring to humans. Dancing gives us a lot of exercises. It teaches us to move our body rhythmically and feel the beat of every song. This kind of physical exercise is extremely delightful and enjoyable.

Moreover, dance also taught me how to stay strong and push my limits. I have had many injuries while dancing, too many bruises and cuts but that didn’t stop me from pursuing it further. In fact, it pushes me to do my best and realize my potential more than ever.

I have enrolled in dancing classes because I wish to make my hobby my career. I feel we all should do things which we enjoy doing. Everyone is running after money and in this race, they give up their likings and preferences. I have learned from this race and decided to not take part in it. I wish to take the road less traveled by and take on challenges most people don’t dare to.

In short, my hobby of dancing makes me feel alive and well. It is the only thing I look forward the most to. Thus, I hope to achieve my dream of being a professional dancer and making way for people who wish to make careers out of their hobbies.

Texas Launches AI Grader for Student Essay Tests But Insists It's Not Like ChatGPT

K ids in Texas are taking state-mandated standardized tests this week to measure their proficiency in reading, writing, science, and social studies. But those tests aren’t going to necessarily be graded by human teachers anymore. In fact, the Texas Education Agency will deploy a new “automated scoring engine” for open-ended questions on the tests. And the state hopes to save millions with the new program.

The technology, which has been dubbed an “auto scoring engine” (ASE) by the Texas Education Agency, uses natural language processing to grade student essays, according to the Texas Tribune . After the initial grading by the AI model, roughly 25% of test responses will be sent back to human graders for review, according to the San Antonio Report news outlet.

Texas expects to save somewhere between $15-20 million with the new AI tool, mostly because fewer human graders will need to be hired through a third-party contracting agency. Previously, about 6,000 graders were needed, but that’s being cut down to about 2,000, according to the Texas Tribune.

A presentation published on the Texas Education Agency’s website appears to show that tests of the new system revealed humans and the automated system gave comparable scores to most kids. But a lot of questions remain about how the tech works exactly and what company may have helped the state develop the software. Two education companies, Cambium and Pearson, are mentioned as contractors at the Texas Education Agency’s site but the agency didn’t respond to questions emailed Tuesday.

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) was first introduced in 2011 but redesigned in 2023 to include more open-ended essay-style questions. Previously, the test contained many more questions in the multiple choice format which, of course, was also graded by computerized tools. The big difference is that scoring a bubble sheet is different from scoring a written response, something computers have more difficulty understanding.

In a sign of potentially just how toxic AI tools have become in mainstream tech discourse, the Texas Education Agency has apparently been quick to shoot down any comparisons to generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT , according to the Texas Tribune. And the PowerPoint presentation on the Texas Education Agency’s site appears to confirm that unease with comparisons to anything like ChatGPT.

“This kind of technology is different from AI in that AI is a computer using progressive learning algorithms to adapt, allowing the data to do the programming and essentially teaching itself,” the presentation explains. “Instead, the automated scoring engine is a closed database with student response data accessible only by TEA and, with strict contractual privacy control, its assessment contractors, Cambium and Pearson.”

Any family who’s upset with their child’s grade can request that a human take another look at the test, according to the San Antonio Report . But it’ll set you back $50.

The Two-State Solution Is an Unjust, Impossible Fantasy

A photo illustration showing Israeli workers building a wall on one side, and a Palestinian child playing by a separation wall on the other.

By Tareq Baconi

Mr. Baconi is the author of “Hamas Contained” and the president of the board of al-Shabaka, the Palestinian Policy Network.

After 176 days, Israel’s assault on Gaza has not stopped and has expanded into what Human Rights Watch has declared to be a policy of starvation as a weapon of war. More than 32,000 Palestinians have been killed, and the international community has reverted to a deeply familiar call for a two-state solution, under which Palestinians and Israelis can coexist in peace and security. President Biden even declared “the only real solution is a two-state solution” in his State of the Union address last month.

But the call rings hollow. The language that surrounds a two-state solution has lost all meaning. Over the years, I’ve encountered many Western diplomats who privately roll their eyes at the prospect of two states — given Israel’s staunch opposition to it, the lack of interest in the West in exerting enough pressure on Israel to change its behavior and Palestinian political ossification — even as their politicians repeat the phrase ad nauseam. Yet in the shadow of what the International Court of Justice has said could plausibly be genocide, everyone has returned to the chorus line, stressing that the gravity of the situation means that this time will be different.

It will not be. Repeating the two-state solution mantra has allowed policymakers to avoid confronting the reality that partition is unattainable in the case of Israel and Palestine, and illegitimate as an arrangement originally imposed on Palestinians without their consent in 1947. And fundamentally, the concept of the two-state solution has evolved to become a central pillar of sustaining Palestinian subjugation and Israeli impunity. The idea of two states as a pathway to justice has in and of itself normalized the daily violence meted out against Palestinians by Israel’s regime of apartheid.

The circumstances facing Palestinians before Oct. 7, 2023, exemplified how deadly the status quo had become. In 2022, Israeli violence killed at least 34 Palestinian children in the West Bank, the most in 15 years, and by mid-2023, that rate was on track to exceed those levels. Yet the Biden administration still saw fit to further legitimize Israel, expanding its diplomatic relations in the region and rewarding it with a U.S. visa waiver . Palestine was largely absent from the international agenda until Israeli Jews were killed on Oct. 7. The fact that Israel and its allies were ill prepared for any kind of challenge to Israeli rule underscores just how invisible the Palestinians were and how sustainable their oppression was deemed to be on the global stage.

This moment of historical rupture offers blood-soaked proof that policies to date have failed, yet countries seek to resurrect them all the same. Instead of taking measures showing a genuine commitment to peace — like meaningfully pressuring Israel to end settlement building and lift the blockade on Gaza or discontinuing America’s expansive military support — Washington is doing the opposite. The United States has aggressively wielded its use of its veto at the United Nations Security Council, and even when it abstains, as it did in the recent vote leading to the first resolution for a cease-fire since Oct. 7, it claims such resolutions are nonbinding. The United States is funding Israel’s military while defunding the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, a critical institution for Palestinians, bolstering the deeply unpopular and illegitimate Palestinian Authority, which many Palestinians now consider to be a subcontractor to the occupation, and subverting international law by limiting avenues of accountability for Israel. In effect, these actions safeguard Israeli impunity.

The vacuity of the two-state solution mantra is most obvious in how often policymakers speak of recognizing a Palestinian state without discussing an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory. Quite the contrary: With the United States reportedly exploring initiatives to recognize Palestinian statehood, it is simultaneously defending Israel’s prolonged occupation at the International Court of Justice, arguing that Israel faces “very real security needs” that justify its continued control over Palestinian territories.

What might explain this seeming contradiction?

The concept of partition has long been used as a blunt policy tool by colonial powers to manage the affairs of their colonies, and Palestine was no exception. The Zionist movement emerged within the era of European colonialism and was given its most important imprimatur by the British Empire. The Balfour Declaration, issued by the British in 1917, called for a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine without adequately accounting for the Palestinians who constituted a vast majority in the region and whom Balfour referred to simply as “non-Jewish communities.” This declaration was then imposed on the Palestinians, who by 1922 had become Britain’s colonized subjects and were not asked to give consent to the partitioning of their homeland. Three decades later, the United Nations institutionalized partition with the passage of the 1947 plan, which called for partitioning Palestine into two independent states, one Palestinian Arab and the other Jewish.

All of Palestine’s neighboring countries in the Middle East and North Africa that had achieved independence from their colonial rulers and joined the United Nations voted against the 1947 plan. The Palestinians were not formally considered in a vote that many saw as illegitimate; it partitioned their homeland to accommodate Zionist immigration, which they had resisted from the onset. The Palestine Liberation Organization, established more than a decade later, formalized this opposition, insisting that Palestine as defined within the boundaries that existed during the British Mandate was “an indivisible territorial unit”; it forcefully refused two states and by the late 1970s was fighting for a secular, democratic state. By the 1980s, however, the P.L.O. chairman, Yasir Arafat, along with most of the organization’s leadership, had come to accept that partition was the pragmatic choice, and many Palestinians who had by then been ground down by the machinery of the occupation accepted it as a way of achieving separateness from Israeli settlers and the creation of their own state.

It took more than three decades for Palestinians to understand that separateness would never come, that the goal of this policy was to maintain the illusion of partition in some distant future indefinitely. In that twilight zone, Israel’s expansionist violence increased and became more forthright, as Israeli leaders became more brazen in their commitment to full control from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. Israel also relied on discredited Palestinian leaders to sustain their control — primarily those who lead the Palestinian Authority and who collaborate with Israel’s machinations and make do with nonsovereign, noncontiguous Bantustans that never challenge Israel’s overarching domination. This kind of demographic engineering, which entails geographic isolation of unwanted populations behind walls, is central to apartheid regimes. Repeating the aspiration for two states and arguing that partition remains viable presents Israel as a Jewish and democratic state — separate from its occupation — giving it a veneer of palatability and obfuscating the reality that it rules over more non-Jews than Jews .

Seen in this light, the failed attempts at a two-state solution are not a failure for Israel at all but a resounding success, as they have fortified Israel’s grip over this territory while peace negotiations ebbed and flowed but never concluded. In recent years, international and Israeli human rights organizations have acknowledged what many Palestinians have long argued: that Israel is a perpetrator of apartheid. B’Tselem, Israel’s leading human rights organization, concluded that Israel is a singular regime of Jewish supremacy from the river to the sea.

Now, with international attention once again focused on the region, many Palestinians understand the dangers of discussing partition, even as a pragmatic option. Many refuse to resuscitate this hollowed-out policy-speak. In a message recently published anonymously, a group of Palestinians on the ground and in the diaspora state wrote: “The partition of Palestine is nothing but a legitimation of Zionism, a betrayal of our people and the final completion of the nakba,” or catastrophe, which refers to the expulsion and flight of about 750,000 Palestinians with Israel’s founding. “Our liberation can only be achieved through a unity of struggle, built upon a unity of people and a unity of land.”

For them, the Palestinian state that their inept leaders continue to peddle, even if achievable, would fail to undo the fact that Palestinian refugees are unable to return to their homes, now in Israel, and that Palestinian citizens of Israel would continue to reside as second-class citizens within a so-called Jewish state.

Global powers might choose to ignore this sentiment as unrealistic, if they even take note of it. They might also choose to ignore Israeli rejection of a two-state solution, as Israeli leaders drop any pretenses and explicitly oppose any pathway to Palestinian statehood. As recently as January, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel “must have security control over the entire territory west of the Jordan River.” He added, “That collides with the idea of sovereignty. What can we do?”

And yet the two-state solution continues to be at the forefront for policymakers who have returned to contorting the reality of an expansionist regime into a policy prescription they can hold on to. They cycle through provisions that the Palestinian state must be demilitarized, that Israel will maintain security oversight, that not every state in the world has the same level of sovereignty. It is like watching a century of failure, culminating in the train wreck of the peace process, replay itself in the span of the past five months.

This will not be the first time that Palestinian demands are not taken into account as far as their own future is concerned. But all policymakers should heed the lesson of Oct. 7: There will be neither peace nor justice while Palestinians are subjugated behind walls and under Israeli domination.

A single state from the river to the sea might appear unrealistic or fantastical or a recipe for further bloodshed. But it is the only state that exists in the real world — not in the fantasies of policymakers. The question, then, is: How can it be transformed into one that is just?

Mental health care is hard to find, especially for people with Medicare or Medicaid

Rhitu Chatterjee

A woman stands in the middle of a dark maze. Lights guide the way for her. It illustrates the concept of standing in front of a challenge and finding the right solution to move on.

With rates of suicide and opioid deaths rising in the past decade and children's mental health declared a national emergency , the United States faces an unprecedented mental health crisis. But access to mental health care for a significant portion of Americans — including some of the most vulnerable populations — is extremely limited, according to a new government report released Wednesday.

The report, from the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General, finds that Medicare and Medicaid have a dire shortage of mental health care providers.

The report looked at 20 counties with people on Medicaid, traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans, which together serve more than 130 million enrollees — more than 40% of the U.S. population, says Meridith Seife , the deputy regional inspector general and the lead author of the report.

Medicaid serves people on low incomes, and Medicare is mainly for people 65 years or older and those who are younger with chronic disabilities.

The report found fewer than five active mental health care providers for every 1,000 enrollees. On average, Medicare Advantage has 4.7 providers per 1,000 enrollees, whereas traditional Medicare has 2.9 providers and Medicaid has 3.1 providers for the same number of enrollees. Some counties fare even worse, with not even a single provider for every 1,000 enrollees.

"When you have so few providers available to see this many enrollees, patients start running into significant problems finding care," says Seife.

The findings are especially troubling given the level of need for mental health care in this population, she says.

"On Medicare, you have 1 in 4 Medicare enrollees who are living with a mental illness," she says. "Yet less than half of those people are receiving treatment."

Among people on Medicaid, 1 in 3 have a mental illness, and 1 in 5 have a substance use disorder. "So the need is tremendous."

The results are "scary" but "not very surprising," says Deborah Steinberg , senior health policy attorney at the nonprofit Legal Action Center. "We know that people in Medicare and Medicaid are often underserved populations, and this is especially true for mental health and substance use disorder care."

Among those individuals able to find and connect with a provider, many see their provider several times a year, according to the report. And many have to drive a long way for their appointments.

"We have roughly 1 in 4 patients that had to travel more than an hour to their appointments, and 1 in 10 had to travel more than an hour and a half each way," notes Seife. Some patients traveled two hours each way for mental health care, she says.

Mental illnesses and substance use disorders are chronic conditions that people need ongoing care for, says Steinberg. "And when they have to travel an hour, more than an hour, for an appointment throughout the year, that becomes unreasonable. It becomes untenable."

"We know that behavioral health workforce shortages are widespread," says Heather Saunders , a senior research manager on the Medicaid team at KFF, the health policy research organization. "This is across all payers, all populations, with about half of the U.S. population living in a workforce shortage."

But as the report found, that's not the whole story for Medicare and Medicaid. Only about a third of mental health care providers in the counties studied see Medicare and Medicaid patients. That means a majority of the workforce doesn't participate in these programs.

This has been well documented in Medicaid, notes Saunders. "Only a fraction" of providers in provider directories see Medicaid patients, she says. "And when they do see Medicaid patients, they often only see a few."

Lower reimbursement rates and a high administrative burden prevent more providers from participating in Medicaid and Medicare, the report notes.

"In the Medicare program, they set a physician fee rate," explains Steinberg. "Then for certain providers, which includes clinical social workers, mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists, they get reimbursed at 75% of that rate."

Medicaid reimbursements for psychiatric services are even lower when compared with Medicare , says Ellen Weber , senior vice president for health initiatives at the Legal Action Center.

"They're baking in those discriminatory standards when they are setting those rates," says Steinberg.

The new report recommends that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) take steps to increase payments to providers and lower administrative requirements. In a statement, CMS said it has responded to those recommendations within the report.

According to research by Saunders and her colleagues at KFF, many states have already started to take action on these fronts to improve participation in Medicaid.

Several have upped their payments to mental health providers. "But the scale of those increases ranged widely across states," says Saunders, "with some states limiting the increase to one provider type or one type of service, but other states having rate increases that were more across the board."

Some states have also tried to simplify and streamline paperwork, she adds. "Making it less complex, making it easier to understand," says Saunders.

But it's too soon to know whether those efforts have made a significant impact on improving access to providers.

CMS has also taken steps to address provider shortages, says Steinberg.

"CMS has tried to increase some of the reimbursement rates without actually fixing that structural problem," says Steinberg. "Trying to add a little bit here and there, but it's not enough, especially when they're only adding a percent to the total rate. It's a really small increase."

The agency has also started covering treatments and providers it didn't use to cover before.

"In 2020, Medicare started covering opioid treatment programs, which is where a lot of folks can go to get medications for their substance use disorder," says Steinberg.

And starting this year, Medicare also covers "mental health counselors, which includes addiction counselors, as well as marriage and family therapists," she adds.

While noteworthy and important, a lot more needs to be done, says Steinberg. "For example, in the substance use disorder space, a lot of addiction counselors do not have a master's degree. And that's one of their requirements to be a counselor in the Medicare program right now."

Removing those stringent requirements and adding other kinds of providers, like peer support specialists, is key to improving access. And the cost of not accessing care is high, she adds.

"Over the past two decades, [in] the older adult population, the number of overdose deaths has increased fourfold — quadrupled," says Steinberg. "So this is affecting people. It is causing deaths. It is causing people to go to the hospital. It increases [health care] costs."
