  • Increasing diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) in the media and entertainment industry is the right thing to do - and can increase profits.
  • A new report from the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Accenture, analyzes progress in the industry.
  • Here's how companies can increase their efforts and reap the rewards of a more diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce and audience.

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) has recently become one of the most trending topics in the media and entertainment industry. But embracing diversity isn't only about doing the right thing.

Analysis shows that ethics and profits are two sides of the same coin. There's financial logic to making sure that content–and those who create it–are authentically and inclusively representative of today’s society.

For example, movies that lack authentic and inclusive representation underperform by around 20% of their budget at the opening weekend box office . In advertising, 64% of consumers in a Google survey said that they had considered buying or had made a purchase after seeing an ad that they considered diverse or inclusive. Similarly, other sectors have sizable untapped opportunities from increased diversity and inclusion.

A new report from the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Accenture, “Reflecting Society: The State of Diverse Representation in Media and Entertainment” shows where the industry is making progress and what more needs to be done. The scope of this wide-ranging report, the first to look across industry sectors and identities, is international although it is worth noting that much of the existing research and data available today comes out of the US.

Have you read?

Reflecting society: the state of diverse representation in media and entertainment, opening new markets.

By better addressing these underrepresented consumers, media businesses should be able to open new markets.

In gaming, for example, only 11% of titles that were nominated for an award in 2020 had significant LGBTQ+ storylines . This is a missed opportunity: research shows that LGBTQ+ consumers are more likely to have a gaming system and also spend more on games. Similarly, only 3% of titles have a primary character of color, just 23% allowed players to choose their character’s ethnicity , and only 18% of games launched in 2020 featured female characters .

Or take the world of sports. Nearly half (47%) of the world’s most ardent fans across 13 major sports are women. But women’s sport gets only 4% of sport media attention today .

In news and publishing, little progress has been made towards greater racial diversity, with non-white publishers increasing in number by only 3% since 2015 . Despite this, 34% of news executives disagree that women and people of color face barriers to career progression.

Embracing greater racial diversity could also translate into a broader audience. For example, P&G’s celebrated advertisement “The Talk” featured Black mothers of the bias they and their children faced in the US. It was viewed 7 million times online, as well as airing on TV.

Increasing diversity across industries

Attracting and inspiring new talent

A greater emphasis on DE&I not only lands well with consumers, but also increases the diversity of talent, which can lead to more representative storytelling.

Increasing the diversity of those working in these industries is especially important because the entertainment and media industry is influential from an early age. Young people take their cues and develop their worldviews from what they see and read. But a study by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center found that less than 4% of books for young people have significant LGBTQ+ content, and representation of diverse content or characters was only 11% African-American, 1.5% Native American, 9% Asian/Pacific and 7% Latinx .

Not only do certain groups not see themselves reflected in the content that’s available, but they also don’t see a path for themselves into a career creating that content. Career opportunities are not evenly distributed, for example, in access to apprenticeships in TV and film.

To address these issues, many brands and advertisers are seeking greater diversity in their workforce and are looking to their agencies to provide it, with clear policies to support that goal. These initiatives create a virtuous circle where diverse content attracts diverse creators who, in turn, create more diverse content. For example, when Beenox and Raven Software added more gender options to their “Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War” game, they reported an increase in the gender diversity of applicants for creative roles .

In sports, efforts to encourage greater participation among young people can lead to a more diverse fanbase , pool of athletes and commentators in later life. To address this, the Australian government recently released Sport 2030 , a comprehensive plan to increase youth sports participation of people with disabilities, people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities and low-medium income households.

Average age at entry into organized or team sports

In film, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences added 819 new members in 2020; 45% were women and 35% were from historically underrepresented groups . The Oscar 2021 shortlist was the most diverse ever , although time will tell if progress is sustained.

Meanwhile, behind the camera, initiatives by organizations such as the Los Angeles Urban League address lack of diversity in film and TV production by offering apprenticeships to those from under-represented communities. In much the same way, Verizon’s Ad Fellows program helps encourage diversity at ad agencies and has a 94% job placement rate for those attending the program.

Elsewhere, UK broadcaster ITV created ‘ Step Up 60 ’ to help accelerate the career progression of more than 60 underrepresented employees by enabling them to temporarily ‘step up’ to senior roles. Global ad group Edelman achieved its goal of having 50% of leadership positions filled by women by 2020 , and has pledged to have a racial/ethnic workplace diversity ratio of 30% in the US by 2022 – a target that it is on track to achieve.

Achieving real progress

In order to drive change and make real progress, organizations must have data and measurement tools that enable them to understand where they are and where they need to go. These tools must address both content and content creators and ensure transparency and accountability.

For example, Netflix has worked with USC Annenberg to analyze its scripted series and films . NBC Universal and the Geena Davis Institute tested an AI tool “ Spellcheck for Bias ” to measure representation in front of and behind the camera. And Twitter launched an internal dashboard to give employees a transparent view of its organization-wide demographic data.

The COVID-19 pandemic and recent social and political unrest have created a profound sense of urgency for companies to actively work to tackle inequity.

The Forum's work on Diversity, Equality, Inclusion and Social Justice is driven by the New Economy and Society Platform, which is focused on building prosperous, inclusive and just economies and societies. In addition to its work on economic growth, revival and transformation, work, wages and job creation, and education, skills and learning, the Platform takes an integrated and holistic approach to diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice, and aims to tackle exclusion, bias and discrimination related to race, gender, ability, sexual orientation and all other forms of human diversity.

entertainment and media essay

The Platform produces data, standards and insights, such as the Global Gender Gap Report and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion 4.0 Toolkit , and drives or supports action initiatives, such as Partnering for Racial Justice in Business , The Valuable 500 – Closing the Disability Inclusion Gap , Hardwiring Gender Parity in the Future of Work , Closing the Gender Gap Country Accelerators , the Partnership for Global LGBTI Equality , the Community of Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officers and the Global Future Council on Equity and Social Justice .

These issues are at the heart of the World Economic Forum’s newly convened Power of Media Taskforce on DE&I. The taskforce brings together companies, industry bodies, and leading non-profits in DE&I advocacy to drive transparency and action and build community. It will initially focus on three key areas:

  • Measurement – creating data-driven benchmarks and metrics to formalize measurement of progress and goal setting;
  • Accountability – creating greater transparency and accountability in initiatives and results;
  • Community and collaboration – building peer communities across the industry and providing a safe space for exploring sensitive and new topics in DE&I and sharing best practices.

The taskforce will highlight DE&I progress through the voice of the audience and will be driven by its members to adopt leading practices and new cross-industry initiatives for content and creative production. Together, we can ensure that content and storytellers are representative of the stories being told, and take meaningful actions and investments that advance equitable representation in society.

Essay On Media

Keeping up with the most recent developments is critical in today's society. People can get the most recent and important news through the media. The media is the most commonly used medium for receiving information from north to south or east to west. Here are a few sample essays on the topic ‘Media’.

100 Words Essay On Media

200 word essay on media, 500 word essay on media.

Essay On Media

The media has an impact on the reputation of a political party, organisation, or individual. Media keeps people informed about current happenings in politics, culture, art, academia, communication, and commerce. Different forms of media help modern civilization in remaining in touch with the world in the shortest amount of time.

The media is all around us; we are immersed in it even when we are not aware of it. It is seen in newspapers, television, and technological gadgets such as cell phones. We perceive it as a tool for speeding time or distancing ourselves from what is going on in other people's lives.

Social media is a tool that has become immensely popular among all ages due to its user-friendly interface. The youth are the most prevalent social media user demographics, which is both remarkable and concerning.

Imagery from the media abounds in today's culture. We know this since we may see posters advertising well-known brands and the latest products almost anywhere we go, such as while driving on the highway. When we are drawn to advertisements, we may begin to imagine or visualise ourselves using them.

The media can tell us about a product, service, or message. Today, media influence is so powerful that it may easily influence public opinion both positively and negatively. We also live in a society that is heavily reliant on the media for entertainment and information. Indeed, pictures in the media have an effect on both people and society, especially women, men, teenagers, and young children.

Simultaneously, media such as television, broadens our perspective by providing us with access to facts from all around the world. Television may also provide us with a wide range of news and current happenings. It can also be a useful learning tool, guiding future generations in the proper direction.

The media has a large influence on our lives. We educate ourselves on a regular basis by staying up with the latest events. The news serves a crucial role in keeping us informed about current affairs and global happenings. For example, because of globalization, you can read about current happenings in the United States of America even if you live in India.

The media is the most significant communication tool. It aids in the delivery or dissemination of news. Although the media is also associated with spreading fake news, it also plays an important role in informing us about reality. We cannot deny that this world is filled with so many social problems that we require the media to spotlight these concerns so that the government or other individuals can take action to resolve these social issues.

Role Of Media

When it comes to the media, it is regarded as the fourth element of democracy. It's the most comprehensive repository of information on the globe. Everyone hope and expects the media to provide us with the most complete and accurate news in any situation. As a result, the media plays an important role in balancing all areas of our society.

It is crucial for teaching and informing global citizens about what is happening around the world. As a result, supplying readers with truthful and authentic news is vital for societal growth. The case of Aayushi Talvaar is a good illustration of how the media works.

Advantages Of Media

Education | The media educates the public. The mob learns about health issues, environmental preservation, and a variety of other relevant topics through television or radio programming.

Keeps Us Informed | People obtain the most recent news in a timely manner. Distance is not a barrier to providing knowledge to people from anywhere on the planet. People receive the daily latest news from media sites, which keep them current on the latest trends and happenings throughout the world.

Knowledge | The media can help you learn more about a variety of topics.

Amusement | It is a great source of entertainment. People are amused by music and television shows.

Disadvantages Of Media

Individualism | People spend far too much time watching or binge-watching stuff on the internet. As a result, their relationships with friends, family, and neighbours may suffer as a result.

Fraud and Cybercrime | The Internet is lurking with imposters, fraudsters, hackers, and other predators with the opportunity to commit criminal acts without the victims' knowledge.

Addiction | For most children and adults, some television shows and internet media can be quite addictive, resulting in a decrease in productivity.

Health Issues | Prolonged television viewing or internet bingeing can cause visual difficulties, and prolonged exposure to loud noises via headphones or earphones can cause hearing impairments.

Malware and Fake Profiles | Anyone can set up an anonymous account and pretend to be someone else. Anyone with access to such profiles might use them for malevolent purposes, such as spreading misinformation, which can harm the image of any targeted people or company.

“The entertainment industry is vast and is a reflection of the society we live in” (Karrine Steffans).

50 Words Essay on Entertainment

Human life is filled with entertainment. Happy hormones are released as a result. Our mental health is maintained by it. An individual’s nature is determined by how he or she entertains himself or herself. the entertainment industry is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress in today’s hectic world. world.

500 Words Essay on Entertainment

As a form of entertainment, it is anything that is capable of holding the attention and interest of an audience, as well as giving them pleasure and delight. Whether it is an idea or a task, the most effective way to keep an audience’s interest is to engage them with an activity or event created over thousands of years specifically to do so.

entertainment and media essay

There are many forms of entertainment that hold people’s attention since they all have different tastes and preferences. Most forms are recognizable and familiar, however, because people have varying tastes in entertainment. Cultures around the world have forms of performance including storytelling, music, drama, dance, and other kinds of performance that originated in royal courts and became sophisticated over time and became available to all.

Modern entertainment industries record and sell entertainment products, which accelerates the process. In modern entertainment, an individual can choose a private performance from a large selection of prerecorded products; a banquet for two; a party for any number or size; or even a performance for thousands.

A very strong association has developed between amusement and entertainment, so fun and laughter have become common understandings. Despite this, there are a number of serious purposes behind some entertainments. This could be seen in various kinds of ceremonies, celebrations, religious festivals, or even satire. It may therefore be possible to achieve insight or intellectual growth through what appears to be entertainment.

Adding entertainment to a private leisure activity or recreation is the role of an audience. As an audience member, you may play a passive role, such as watching a play, opera, television show, or film; or you may play an active role, such as playing a game in which the participant/audience roles are routinely reversed. Scripted, formal entertainment such as performances at theatres and concerts; or unscripted and spontaneous, such as children’s games, can take place in public or privately.

There have been many forms of entertainment throughout history, evolving due to changes in culture, technology, and fashion. Stage magic is an example of a form of entertainment that has persisted over the centuries. The stories in films and video games are still told, dramas are presented, and music is still played despite the use of newer media. It is possible to enjoy a number of consecutive days of entertainment at a festival devoted to music, film, or dance.

The public realm has been removed from some activities once viewed as entertaining, for example punishments. Earlier skills such as fencing and archery, now considered serious sports and professions by many, have also developed as entertainment with a broader appeal to a wider audience.

Similar to this, other necessary skills, such as cooking, have been staged as global competitions, broadcast for entertainment, and even transformed into performances among professionals. An individual or group may view entertainment as work, while another may view it as entertainment.

Entertainment’s familiar forms transcend different media and are capable of being remixed in seemingly endless ways. In this way, many themes, images, and structures have remained relevant and timeless.

However, entertainment can be distinguished from other activities, such as teaching and marketing, despite the fact that they can use the appeal of entertainment to achieve their goals. There are times when entertainment combines both. Entertainment has been recognized as an invaluable and influential influence by scholars, as well as in other fields such as museology, which has benefitted from its increasing sophistication.

Conclusion,

There are advantages and disadvantages to entertainment media. There are some forms of media, however, that encourage the divide between American culture and individual values, despite their potential to bring society together.

It is the primary mission of the media, in general, to communicate information to the public. To achieve its mission, media propaganda must do what it takes to continue to discuss or accept a topic. The media affects and prejudges many who are not aware.

ORDER PAPER LIKE THIS

Introduction

The key challenges that come up after an authentic performance is turned into a mediated one to maintain a critical distance is a limitation that hides the article`s art. Sometimes the originality is important to bring out the good art aspect this will act like a conduit between the article and those that are watching. The aesthetic distance can be the reason for the spectator`s critic of the article. The cases that are to be mediated are those that are evaluated by reason. The can voice out the reasons and amplify the qualification of the artist, with unique privileged insight (Vivian, 2013). I prefer the live performance than that which is mediated my reasons being that a mediated performance cannot amplify the appreciation of the article as that which is presented live. The audiences always prefer a performance that can absorb their senses, bring out their curiosity and compel them to be more appreciative of the article. An article that is mediated cannot achieve the potential power that comes with an authentic presentation. The mainstream public and the artist in the article forge an immediate relationship this is important for the media conveyor in bringing the ethos of the artist and the logos out to the mainstream public. There is no value left for big screen movie experiences, because of piracy and infringement. It is brought by leaking of the movie before it is launched. The piracy problem results in lowering of the market value of the movie when it is being sold in the local and international market. The experiences derived from the big screen movie shows is that important for the fans, but if the movies are pirated then the big screens will be crippled (Vivian, 2013). Online streaming will definitely overtake any other motion media. It is due to events like the super bowl, world cup and new movie's release. An estimated rise in video streaming of content that can be watched in the normal television programs. It is an advantage to other media that do not bring the event fully mostly by television broadcasts that only show precut events in the news only; this is disadvantageous to the television broadcasters. It can result to the spectators going to the programs of their choices online, most people working in offices and those that have access to high speed browsing networks. The reason why most people resolve to these kinds of media coverage ages is saving time that they can be taken when downloading an event if they missed it live or on the television (Dixon, 2013). Saving space is also another reason for online streaming of videos. Somehow online streaming cannot overtake television broadcasting because online streaming requires broadband with high speeds and applications that can play on computers and laptops. For broadcasting televisions to match online streaming they require much of changes to maintain their audiences and those that already left. Cable networks and premium networks are becoming obsolete because compared to online streaming they cannot bring all that the spectator wants to watch in varied time rather they bring only what the audience has subscribed. To begin with they need to offer online streaming options which will give the viewer the option to access whatever they want at any time just like online streaming (Lewis, 2002). Offering programs that are in demand without interruptions will assist in countering online streaming. Several channels have implemented the change to online streaming of its content this is a move to maintain its clients and reclaim the lost ones. The channels have opted for services like; Wherever TV, BBC iplayer, Tivibu, ABC among others and supporting companies that are located worldwide and in regionally available. The programs are aired through the web, windows, Mac, Linux and IOS applications. Some are aired through android, console and TV, TV set top box applications. The broadcasting channel air various programs the likes of series and movies which are in high demand by the customers. Programs like house of cards, seven days catch up and the IT crowd. The BBC`s panorama is also very popular among the online streamers. Channel 4 is also popular in the black books and the inbetweeners these are online based programs that are being provided by broadcasting televisions. They are among the few that provide these programs worldwide. They are the changes made to provide online services for their customers. It is hard for entertainment to be controlled because there are many independent bodies in the media industry. Most of the services that entertainment offers are not seen in the eyes of the governments in the countries they are being produced from (Lewis, 2002). Mostly, it happens when the product is released online which, unless it is popular it is very hard to know. Pornography has been known since the previous century and now it is even harder to control because production of pornographic videos is high and the demand is also high therefore the videos are sold and distributed online to a very large clientele base.

Tommy Dorfman  is ready to tell the world she's officially married.

The 13 Reasons Why  star confirms her nuptials in an essay for Vogue , published Thursday, sharing that she and her now-wife, Elise, eloped in 2023. Dorfman, 31, shares that falling in love was not in her immediate plans following her divorce from her ex-husband, Peter Zurkuhlen, in February 2022 after five years of marriage.

As Dorfman put it, she was "eager to clock in" for her "Samantha Jones era," in reference to the famous sex-hungry character in Sex and the City  deftly portrayed by Kim Cattrall . Dorfman says she set out to do exactly that when she signed up for the Hinge dating app, but everything changed when she matched with Elise.

Dorfman says the first few months of the relationship "set the tone for how we would eventually get married," and that was having a low-key wedding that turned into an elopement. The idea of eloping seemed even more enticing after the couple endured "an embarrassing amount of headlines" after she "nonchalantly" mentioned in August 2022 on the  Broad Ideas  podcast that she was engaged to a woman. She never mentioned Elise, but the tone was set.

Dorfman -- who came out as transgender in summer of 2021 -- says that's when the couple decided to keep their relationship "private until we chose to invite others in." Hence, getting eloped.

The actress reveals they eventually purchased their wedding dresses, but their elopement was so spontaneous they never got the chance to wear them (they were wrapped back home in Brooklyn) on their actual wedding day in Los Angeles.

As for their wedding day pics, those were snapped on Dorfman's iPhone and a disposable camera she purchased at CVS that morning.

"The photos of that moment are mostly blurry and terribly composed," she quips in Vogue , "but special nonetheless."

Once back in Brooklyn, Dorfman says the couple threw on the wedding dresses purchased at Dover Street Market New York (where she once worked) and had a photoshoot snapped by a close friend to commemorate the momentous occasion .

"A few months later, we got photos from Hunter, and at that moment, we decided we wanted to share them with our friends and family and celebrate our love more publicly," Dorfman writes. "While we won't live our lives online in any way that isn't well-protected, we do see the benefit of celebrating our love with the world -- and frankly, the importance of people seeing trans and queer love en vogue."

The wedding revelation comes nearly three years after Dorfman shared why she's " never felt better " after coming out as transgender, telling InStyle  that taking hormones has paid huge dividends.

"I just switched my hormones, and I've never felt better in my life," she noted at the time. "I spent 28 years of my life suicidal and depressed and recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. I don't think I've ever been genuinely happy until this past year. I look at the Internet chronicle of photos of me since I started working, and I can see how f**king unhappy I was in every photo. It's wild."

Around this time two years ago at Billboard , we were all asking: Where are the new hits ?

Through the first few months of 2022, the Billboard Hot 100 was stocked almost exclusively with holdovers from 2021 and even 2020 or earlier, with totally new music in precious short supply in the chart’s top tiers. Relief eventually came that month in the form of Harry Styles’ instant runaway smash “As It Was,” and then as April turned to May, via new albums by Future, Bad Bunny and Kendrick Lamar. But it still felt like the year was playing catch-up, like at midyear 2022 was still only just properly getting started.

J. Cole or Drake: Who Needs to Respond More to Kendrick Lamar's Verse? The Cases for Both

See latest videos, charts and news

Trending on Billboard

Let’s start with the list of A-list artists who have already released entirely new albums by May 9: Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Ye & Ty Dolla $ign, Future & Metro Boomin (twice!), J. Cole and Dua Lipa. (Depending on your “A-list” definition, you could also potentially throw Usher, Justin Timberlake and Kacey Musgraves on that list as well.) Hell, you could probably cut the list after the second name and the point would still stand: Any year where you get new sets by Beyoncé ( Cowboy Carter ) and Taylor Swift ( The Tortured Poets Department ) — the two most celebrated pop stars in the world right now — before Memorial Day, you’re probably off to a pretty fast start. And both sets have been enormous, world-building, culture-conquering affairs, with huge Hot 100-topping lead singles and no shortage of critical and fan discourse over their deeper implications.

Speaking of “Like That”: That Kendrick Lamar-assisted chart-topper essentially knocked the hip-hop world off its usual axis, kicking off the back-and-forth with Drake that has somehow managed to overshadow everything else that’s gone on in popular music so far this year. J. Cole responded first to Lamar’s pot-stirring “Like That” verse, on his lukewarmly received Might Delete Later mixtape and its closing “7 Minute Drill,” before publicly bowing out of the beef and deleting “Drill” from streaming services. But Drake was determined to get his money’s worth: He responded with both the leaked “Push Ups” and the social media-released “Taylor Made Freestyle” — which featured unlicensed, AI-generated guest verses “from” West Coast legends Snoop Dogg and the late Tupac Shakur, and was eventually taken down upon threat of legal action from the Shakur estate.

The Kendrick-Drake feud has been the biggest in music this year, but it wasn’t the first. The stage was set for that blockbuster beef by the January back-and-forth between Megan Thee Stallion, whose “Hiss” was thought to have subliminals aimed at rap rival Nicki Minaj (as well as additional lyrics assumed to be shots at Drake and other rap-world figures), and which inspired a response track (in addition to a lot of social media talk) from Minaj in the form of “Big Foot.” The fallout from that beef was mostly contained to the release week of the two tracks, but it helped Megan secure her first-ever entirely solo Hot 100 No. 1 for “Hiss,” and generally established the competitive tone for hip-hop among its biggest 2024 artists.

But the real reason 2024 has been so exciting, even beyond all these recognizable names showing up and showing out, is the equally impressive list of rising stars who have made their mark on the year so far.

Música Mexicana phenom Xavi began the year with two songs already climbing the top 100, and plenty more seemingly to come. Teddy Swims and Benson Boone have forced top 40 to make room for big soulful vocals and even bigger screaming guitar, with their crossover smashes “Lose Control” and “Beautiful Things,” respectively. Alt-rock has seen its fortunes revived on the chart through Djo’s psych-leaning “End of Beginning” and Artemas’ darkwave-inspired “I Like It When You Kiss Me,” both surprise top 20 Hot 100 hits. Even longtime cult favorite Hozier, a decade removed from his breakout hit “Take Me to Church,” is now back with a somehow-even-bigger hit: “Too Sweet,” lifted to No. 1 by good TikTok buzz and the currently rising tides of alt-folk and soul-pop.

For a few of these breakout artists, the success has been a long time coming. Sexyy Redd built up momentum for most of 2023 with viral hits “Pound Town” and “SkeeYee” — culminating in a feature appearance on Drake’s For All the Dogs No. 11 hit “Rich Baby Daddy” — but she’s taken it to a new level this year with her first solo top 20 hit, the dancefloor shout-along “Get It Sexyy.” Glorilla has taken a similar path to solo success with her own self-referencing smash “Yeah Glo!,” while also joining forces with Megan Thee Stallion for the chart-storming “Wanna Be.” Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan were pop favorites with critical acclaim disproportionate to their actual top 40 presence — but following opening slots on Taylor Swift’s and Olivia Rodrigo’s recent tours, they’ve both seen raised profiles and higher levels of crossover stardom with new singles “Espresso,” and “Good Luck Babe!,” respectively, both all but sure to keep growing into the warm-weather months.

The sheer volume of impressive hits so far this year can be seen in the amount of turnover on the Hot 100 — particularly in the top spot, where no one song has reigned for more than three consecutive weeks (“Like That,” again). We’ve already seen 11 different songs top the Hot 100 across the first 19 chart weeks, compared to seven last year and just six in 2022. Both of those years saw a No. 1 hit reign for 15+ weeks seemingly almost by default: “As It Was” and Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” didn’t dominate because they kept finding new ways to infiltrate pop culture (a la Lil Nas X with “Old Town Road” ), but simply because the competition usually just wasn’t strong enough across the board to consistently threaten their supremacy. This year, with everything that’s been happening, it seems unlikely that either song would even get to double-digit weeks on top.

Regardless of the reasons, it’s been a transfixing start to the year in popular music, with major contributions seemingly coming from all different corners of the music world, and from all different levels of artists. And what’s more, it doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon: This Friday brings with it a new album from Gunna and a new single from Post Malone and Morgan Wallen, the latter being arguably the biggest remaining recording artist in contemporary music who we haven’t heard much new from this year. And then the week after, it’s time for Billie Eilish’s much-hyped Hit Me Hard and Soft album, her first full-length set to arrive with no advance singles. Get your rest days in where you can and maybe hope for a bit of a summer vacation in a couple months, because it doesn’t look like pop is going to be taking it easy on us anytime in the near future — we’re exhausted, but elated.

RIP Metaverse

An obituary for the latest fad to join the tech graveyard

entertainment and media essay

The Metaverse , the once-buzzy technology that promised to allow users to hang out awkwardly in a disorientating video-game-like world, has died after being abandoned by the business world. It was three years old.

The capital-M Metaverse, a descendant of the 1982 movie "Tron" and the 2003 video game "Second Life," was born in 2021 when Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg changed the name of his trillion-dollar company to Meta. After a much-heralded debut, the Metaverse became the obsession of the tech world and a quick hack to win over Wall Street investors. The hype could not save the Metaverse, however, and a lack of coherent vision for the product ultimately led to its decline. Once the tech industry turned to a new, more promising trend — generative AI — the fate of the Metaverse was sealed.

The Metaverse is now headed to the tech industry's graveyard of failed ideas. But the short life and ignominious death of the Metaverse offers a glaring indictment of the tech industry that birthed it.

Grand promise

From the moment of its delivery, Zuckerberg claimed that the Metaverse would be the future of the internet. The glitzy, spurious promotional video that accompanied Zuckerberg's name-change announcement described a future where we'd be able to interact seamlessly in virtual worlds: Users would "make eye contact" and "feel like you're right in the room together." The Metaverse offered people the chance to engage in an "immersive" experience, he claimed.

These grandiose promises heaped sky-high expectations on the Metaverse. The media swooned over the newborn concept: The Verge published a nearly 5,000-word-long interview with Zuckerberg immediately following the announcement — in which the writer called it "an expansive, immersive vision of the internet." Glowing profiles of the Metaverse seemed to set it on a laudatory path, but the actual technology failed to deliver on this promise throughout its short life. A wonky virtual-reality interview with the CBS host Gayle King , where low-quality cartoon avatars of both King and Zuckerberg awkwardly motioned to each other, was a stark contrast to the futuristic vistas shown in Meta's splashy introductory video .

The Metaverse also suffered from an acute identity crisis. A functional business proposition requires a few things to thrive and grow: a clear use case, a target audience, and the willingness of customers to adopt the product. Zuckerberg waxed poetic about the Metaverse as "a vision that spans many companies'' and "the successor to the mobile internet," but he failed to articulate the basic business problems that the Metaverse would address. The concept of virtual worlds where users interact with each other using digital avatars is an old one, going back as far as the late 1990s with massively multiplayer online role-player games, such as "Meridian 59," "Ultima Online," and "EverQuest." And while the Metaverse supposedly built on these ideas with new technology, Zuckerberg's one actual product — the VR platform Horizon Worlds, which required the use of an incredibly clunky Oculus headset — failed to suggest anything approaching a road map or a genuine vision. In spite of the Metaverse's arrested conceptual development, a pliant press published statements about the future of the technology that were somewhere between unrealistic and outright irresponsible . The CNBC host Jim Cramer nodded approvingly when Zuckerberg claimed that 1 billion people would use the Metaverse and spend hundreds of dollars there, despite the Meta CEO's inability to say what people would receive in exchange for their cash or why anyone would want to strap a clunky headset to their face to attend a low-quality, cartoon concert.

A high-flying life

The inability to define the Metaverse in any meaningful way didn't get in the way of its ascension to the top of the business world. In the months following the Meta announcement, it seemed that every company had a Metaverse product on offer, despite it not being obvious what it was or why they should.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella would say at the company's 2021 Ignite Conference that he couldn't "overstate how much of a breakthrough " the Metaverse was for his company, the industry, and the world. Roblox, an online game platform that has existed since 2004, rode the Metaverse hype wave to an initial public offering and a $41 billion valuation. Of course, the cryptocurrency industry took the ball and ran with it: The people behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT company conned the press into believing that uploading someone's digital monkey pictures into VR would be the key to "master the Metaverse." Other crypto pumpers even successfully convinced people that digital land in the Metaverse would be the next frontier of real-estate investment . Even businesses that seemed to have little to do with tech jumped on board. Walmart joined the Metaverse. Disney joined the Metaverse.

Companies' rush to get into the game led Wall Street investors, consultants, and analysts to try to one up each other's projections for the Metaverse's growth. The consulting firm Gartner claimed that 25% of people would spend at least one hour a day in the Metaverse by 2026. The Wall Street Journal said the Metaverse would change the way we work forever . The global consulting firm McKinsey predicted that the Metaverse could generate up to "$5 trillion in value," adding that around 95% of business leaders expected the Metaverse to "positively impact their industry" within five to 10 years. Not to be outdone, Citi put out a massive report that declared the Metaverse would be a $13 trillion opportunity .

A brutal downfall

In spite of all this hype, the Metaverse did not lead a healthy life. Every single business idea or rosy market projection was built on the vague promises of a single CEO. And when people were actually offered the opportunity to try it out, nobody actually used the Metaverse.

Decentraland, the most well-funded, decentralized, crypto-based Metaverse product (effectively a wonky online world you can "walk" around), only had around 38 daily active users in its "$1.3 billion ecosystem." Decentraland would dispute this number, claiming that it had 8,000 daily active users — but that's still only a fraction of the number of people playing large online games like "Fortnite." Meta's much-heralded efforts similarly struggled: By October 2022, Mashable reported that Horizon Worlds had less than 200,000 monthly active users — dramatically short of the 500,000 target Meta had set for the end of 2022. The Wall Street Journal reported that only about 9% of user-created worlds were visited by more than 50 players , and The Verge said that it was so buggy that even Meta employees eschewed it . Despite the might of a then-trillion-dollar company, Meta could not convince people to use the product it had staked its future on.

The Metaverse fell seriously ill as the economy slowed and the hype around generative AI grew. Microsoft shuttered its virtual-workspace platform AltSpaceVR in January 2023, laid off the 100 members of its "industrial metaverse team ," and made a series of cuts to its HoloLens team . Disney shuttered its Metaverse division in March, and Walmart followed suit by ending its Roblox-based Metaverse projects. The billions of dollars invested and the breathless hype around a half-baked concept led to thousands — if not tens of thousands — of people losing their jobs .

But the Metaverse was officially pulled off life support when it became clear that Zuckerberg and the company that launched the craze had moved on to greener financial pastures. Zuckerberg declared in a March update that Meta's "single largest investment is advancing AI and building it into every one of our products." Meta's chief technology officer, Andrew Bosworth, told CNBC in April that he, along with Mark Zuckerberg and the company's chief product officer, Chris Cox, were now spending most of their time on AI. The company has even stopped pitching the Metaverse to advertisers , despite spending more than $100 billion in research and development on its mission to be "Metaverse first." While Zuckerberg may suggest that developing games for the Quest headsets is some sort of investment, the writing is on the wall: Meta is done with the Metaverse.

Did anyone learn their lesson?

While the idea of virtual worlds or collective online experiences may live on in some form, the Capital-M Metaverse is dead. It was preceded in death by a long line of tech fads like Web3 and Google Glass. It is survived by newfangled ideas like the aforementioned generative AI and the self-driving car. Despite this long lineage of disappointment, let's be clear: The death of the Metaverse should be remembered as arguably one of the most historic failures in tech history.

I do not believe that Mark Zuckerberg ever had any real interest in "the Metaverse," because he never seemed to define it beyond a slightly tweaked Facebook with avatars and cumbersome hardware. It was the means to an increased share price, rather than any real vision for the future of human interaction. And Zuckerberg used his outsize wealth and power to get the whole of the tech industry and a good portion of the American business world into line behind this half-baked idea.

The fact that Mark Zuckerberg has clearly stepped away from the Metaverse is a damning indictment of everyone who followed him, and anyone who still considers him a visionary tech leader. It should also be the cause for some serious reflection among the venture-capital community, which recklessly followed Zuckerberg into blowing billions of dollars on a hype cycle founded on the flimsiest possible press-release language. In a just world, Mark Zuckerberg should be fired as CEO of Meta (in the real world, this is actually impossible ).

Zuckerberg misled everyone, burned tens of billions of dollars, convinced an industry of followers to submit to his quixotic obsession, and then killed it the second that another idea started to interest Wall Street. There is no reason that a man who has overseen the layoffs of tens of thousands of people should run a major company. There is no future for Meta with Mark Zuckerberg at the helm: It will stagnate, and then it will die and follow the Metaverse into the proverbial grave.
