We are talking about first impressions here. So, let's take on the first thing our eyes fall on—the cover page. The instructions below show you how to make a cover page in Word that's attractive and professional?

Note: You can use our instructions to create a cover page design for your school assignment. Before you add a cover page to your assignment, however, check for any specific requirements with your instructor.

What Is a Cover Page?

There are a lot of things that go into a professional Microsoft Word document . The cover page is the very first page of your document. Its purpose right at the beginning is to give the reader the "Big Idea" about the document.

The why and wherefore is communicated through a specific title, the author name, date, a one-liner on the subject, and any other bit of important information that you think is important for the reader.

What Does a Plain Cover Page Look Like?

Microsoft Word is used for writing serious research documents and school essays. Most of them go with monochromatic and simple cover pages. often dictated by strict style guides like the Chicago Manual of Style. Other non-academic cover pages are more casual.

But what if you want to create a cover page in Word that's way cooler than vanilla? Even if you don't have the chops for it? Design your own cover page with the easy tools on Microsoft Word and save it as your own cover page template.

How to Make an Attractive Cover Page

Microsoft Word makes it painless to create a business report cover page or a title page for an essay. The Microsoft Office suite comes with a few well-designed cover pages that you can re-purpose for your document. There's a good variety to choose from.

To make a cover page, follow these steps:

• Open a new Word document.
• Click on the Insert menu on the ribbon.
• The dropdown for Cover Page is the first feature you will spot on the menu (under Pages). Click on tiny arrow next to it and open the inbuilt gallery of templates.
• Pick one from the 16 pre-formatted templates and three more on Office.com.
• Select the one you like and click on it.

The cover page appears at the beginning of the document by default. But to place it in any other location, right-click on the cover page thumbnail in the gallery and select from the options given. Though, I am not sure why you would want to!

Customize Individual Fields

Click on each pre-formatted field (the square brackets) and the whole thing gets highlighted with a blue field label on top. Type in your version for the given field. The author name might appear by default if the Microsoft Office installation is in your name.

Place the common information in Quick Parts and you don't have to bother with typing them again and again.

Change the date fields with the dropdown arrow and select a date from a calendar. You can format all fields just like normal text.

You can easily edit graphical cover page elements like any other image. Just click on the graphic to display the Drawing Tools and Picture Tools menus on the Ribbon.

Change the Cover Page Design on the Fly

Customizing a pre-formatted cover page is a piece of cake. The templates consist of formatted controls and graphic boxes that come in different color themes. So, you can change any part of the template on the fly.

Notice a picture on the cover page template? Maybe, you would like to swap it out with a logo or another more appropriate image. Just right-click on the picture and click Change Picture in the context menu.

Changed your mind about the cover page design? While working on one cover page, you can change it for another cover page by selecting a new template from the dropdown. The new template retains the field entries.

Note: To replace a cover page created in an older version of Microsoft Word, you must delete the first cover page manually, and then add a new design from the cover page gallery.

Click on Save to finalize the cover page as a document.

If you would like to save the cover page for later use in another document, select the entire cover page.

Click on Insert > Cover Page > Save Selection to Cover Page Gallery . You can use the same menu to remove a selected cover page from the gallery.

How to Make a Cover Page in Microsoft Word

Word templates are a time-saving solution, but they don't allow your personality to shine through. To add a personal touch, you should put in a bit more effort and make a cover page from scratch and put some planning into it.

You have all the image editing tools in Microsoft Word at your disposal. When you can  design your own logo in Microsoft Word , a cover page is less of a chore. Borrow or steal ideas from the process.

The screenshot below displays a custom cover page I created in Microsoft Word from scratch. I used a few basic Shapes to create the design and formatted them with color.

Save Your Custom Template

Complete your cover page design on a fresh Microsoft Word document. Save this document as a Microsoft Word template ( File > Save As > Microsoft Word Template ) in a location of your choice.

Now, the next steps are about adding your own cover page to the default choices under the Insert menu. Follow these steps:

Press Ctrl + A to select the entire page.

Add these selections to the Quick Parts gallery. Go to Ribbon > Insert > Quick Parts (the Text Group). Select  Save Selection to Quick Part Gallery…  from the dropdown.

Enter the details in the dialog for a new Building Block . Building blocks are reusable Microsoft Word elements that you can add to any of the galleries available in Word. This is what the dialog box looks like:

• Name: Give the cover page a Name.
• Gallery: Choose "Cover Pages" from the dropdown.
• Category: Choose a category. For better organization, make a new category.
• Save in:  Save it in your template or in the building block. When saved as a building block, you can use it in any Word document without opening the template.

Click OK and close the Building Block dialog box. Go to the Insert menu and check your new cover page template.

A cover page is one of the best ways to stylize your document. But is it one of the more underused features of Microsoft Word ? A Microsoft Word document is often bland. Consider the merits:

Write an informative, striking title that summarizes the topic of your paper. Try to keep the title focused and use relevant keywords.

Place the title three or four lines down from the top of the paper. Center align and bold it. Don’t forget to use title case capitalization (capitalize the first letter of each word, except small words such as articles and short prepositions).

Write the author’s name under the paper title (leave a blank line in between). Give their full names (first name, middle initial(s) and last name), but don’t include titles (Dr., Prof.) or degrees (Ph.D., MSc).

List the authors in order of their contribution. If there are two authors, separate their names with the word “and”, like this:

Write the author’s affiliation on the next line under the author names. Students should specify the department and institution where they’re attending school. Professional researchers should specify the department and institution where they conducted their research.

Multiple authors with different affiliations

Use superscript numbers on the author line to indicate which institution they’re affiliated with. Don’t use superscript numbers if all authors are affiliated with the same institution (and department).

On a student title page, provide information about the course. List the following information on separate (double spaced) lines under the author’s affiliation:

• Instructor(s)
• Assignment’s due date

For professional papers, you may include an author note. This note may contain the author’s ORCID iD, affiliation changes, disclosures of conflicts of interest, brief acknowledgments, and contact information (in that specific order). Present this information in separate paragraphs.

Place the author note on the bottom half of the page. Center the label “Author note” and apply bold styling. The paragraphs in the author note are left-aligned. The first line of each new paragraph is indented.

For a student title page, the page header consists of just a page number in the top-right corner. There is no need for a running head (as was the case in APA 6th edition).

A professional title page does have a running head. The running head is an abbreviated version of the paper title in all capital letters. The maximum length is 50 characters (counting spaces).

Images are not usually included on an APA title page, and APA does not provide any guidelines for doing so. It’s usually viewed as unprofessional to include an image, since the title page is there to provide information, not for decoration.

If you do decide to include an image on your title page, make sure to check whether you need permission from the creator of the image. Include a note directly underneath the image acknowledging where it comes from, beginning with the word “ Note .” (italicized and followed by a period):

• If you found the image online or in another source, include a citation and copyright attribution .
• If it’s an image you created yourself (e.g., a photograph you took, an infographic you designed), explain this (e.g., “Photograph taken by the author.”).

Don’t give the image a label, title, or number. Only images within the text itself are labeled as figures .

It’s all about following instructions, however, if you are not given any brief about fonts and display you know what to do. Your cover page should look like it has been made by a professional and not by a high school student. Don’t play with the fonts too much and get your work done on time. 

Grammar 

Then comes the ultimate test of your grammar skills. Jk. It’s not the ultimate test but yes, a test for sure. Presentation 

Try your best to put on a great show because that’s what matters. As they say, the first impression is the last, you better put a great amount of effort into it. Your cover page is going to be the first thing your teacher would see, it has to be effective. Hence, when you are proofreading your assignment and cover page, go through every little detail. Find your mistakes, correct them, and then submit your assignment! Design a Book Cover

Students create a new cover design for a book they are reading to demonstrate comprehension and explore character, plot, setting, symbolism, and conflict.

Students just aren't checking books out of the school library as often anymore. The librarian is hoping to remedy this situation by making the books that are in the library look more appealing!

After finding a book you enjoy, encourage other students to read it by creating a new cover design to entice other students to read it.

Images can be powerful ways of communicating. People instinctively respond to images based on their personalities, associations, and previous experience. Graphic designers use this instinctive response to visually communicate ideas and information. They work with different tools and mediums to convey a message from a client to a particular audience.

As a class, look at the covers for several books you have read. Does the cover art reflect the content and mood of the book?

Share the librarian's dilemma and ask your students to create new cover jackets for some of their favorite books. Remind them that a book jacket includes:

• A clear title and author name
• A graphic design that reflects the books themes
• A summary of the plot without giving away the ending
• A review (opinion) about the book

Have students choose a favorite book or one they have read recently.

To help students review what they learned about the book, have them complete a character sketch or character web about the main character. This will help them develop details about the main character, so they communicate information about the character linguistically before trying to do so visually.

You may also find it useful for them to complete organizers that show characters, setting, and events in the beginning, middle, and end or even a more elaborate plot diagram.

Graphic designers need to think about the goal of the images they create. A book cover design should not only give the viewer an idea of the content and mood of the book but should also be eye-catching to encourage students browsing in the library (like customers in a bookstore) to pick up a book they may not be familiar with.

Have students think about the message they want to convey with their book cover and write a short proposal about what they hope their book cover will convey.

For example, in Esperanza Rising, a proposal might look like:

Pam Munoz Ryan’s Esperanza Rising is a story about a well-to-do Mexican girl who had to begin a new life in the farm fields of California. Despite all of her misfortune and hard work, Esperanza Rising is a story about hope for a bright future. The book cover for this story should show her background in Mexico and her hard work in the fields, but the mood should still be uplifting.

Have students share their proposal with a partner who has read their book and discuss the merits of the idea.

• Do you agree with their summary of what should be included on the cover?
• Do you agree with the mood they have chosen?
• What images might they use?

Have students revise and submit their proposal for your review.

Once the students have their proposal written, they should begin looking for potential images they can use in their cover design. Using the descriptive words in their character sketch and cover design worksheets, have them use a digital camera to capture appropriate images and the Internet to explore and download copyright-friendly images from Pics4Learning .

You may also want to give them access to a paint program or art supplies, so they can also create original illustrations and artwork.

Once students have collected all of their image resources, have them use a tool like Wixie to combine them into a front and back cover design or book jacket.

When the cover designs are completed, have students work in small teams to evaluate them. Collect all of the evaluations and then distribute them to the cover designers.

Print the new cover designs and display them around school to promote reading. The librarian may choose to display them in the library to help visiting students connect with literature that interests them.

You could also ask local graphic designers to evaluate student work. Make sure the designers evaluate the work for both design skill and how well the design reflects the content of the book. In other words, bring in designers who love to read!

Create a rubric or checklist to help guide student work during research, writing, and final book cover design. Use the Rubric Maker to create a rubric for free. If you use Wixie, use the embedded rubric-making tool. The book cover design templates in Wixie each have a rubric already attached.

Use the character sketch to evaluate how well students understood the content of the book, as well as their skill at describing the characters and events in the text. Use their cover proposal to evaluate how well they can translate their content research into a design that shares this information visually.

The cover design is a great summative assessment helping you evaluate student's comprehension and skill communicating in a visual medium.

Text description provided by the architects. The official grand opening of a special school, Letovo School , took place in Moscow last September. The assignment entailed a 20 hectare schoolcampus with educational facilities, student housing and school staff housing. The school campus offers extended outdoor sports facilities with a soccer stade, a running track, tennis courts and basketball courts. In addition there is a greenhouse, a treeyard and ample space for wandering and relaxation in the green.

While the architecture and interior of the school were designed by atelier PRO, the landscape design was developed by Buro Sant en Co landscape architecture. Russian firm Atrium Architectural Studio was responsible for the technical execution. In 2014 Atelier PRO had won the international design competition, the construction began mid-2016 and the campus was taken into use by mid-2018.

Letovo, a dream come true Letovo School is a special school for gifted and motivated children aged 12 to 17. The idea to create the school came from entrepreneur and philanthropist Vadim Moshkovich: ‘My dream was to offer talented children from all over the country access to high-quality education, regardless of their parents’ financial means. This school makes it possible for them to continue their studies at the 10 best universities in the country or at one of the top 50 universities in the world.’

Landscape-inspired design and shape Located in Novaya Moskva,southwest of Moscow ,the campus sits atop a beautiful plot of land that slopes down to a forest-lined river. Distinctive level variations were applied in and around the school to integrate the architecture into the landscape.

The shape of the large complex brings it down to a human scale for the children: the building appears to dance across the landscape due to its dynamic design. Due to the perspective effect one only ever sees part of the building's full size when walking around, which gives the impression of a refined scale. The building’s contours and flowing curves create surprising indoor and outdoor spaces as well.

The heart of the school: the central hub The central hub is the place where day-to-day life at the school unfolds. This flexible, transformable space will be used throughout the day as an informal meeting place. The dance studio on the ground floor can be transformed through a few simple adjustments into a theatre with a stage, a cosy living room or an auditorium that can accommodate 1,000 people for special events such as graduation ceremonies and large celebrations, as seen at the grand opening. This central hub connects the building’s three wings: the art wing, the south wing with science- and general-use rooms and the sports wing

Learning environment with a diversity in working spaces Letovo envisioned an innovative and modern take on existing education in Russia. In the spatial design, this perspective translates into space for theoretical education as well as special areas for group work and independent study in the tapered building wings. In the library wing there are silence spaces workshop spaces and a debating room. These are all supportive to the student’s personal development. 

Sports programme In addition to the extended sports outdoor facilities, the indoor supply of sports facilities is substantial. These cover fitness rooms, martial arts rooms, a swimming pool, a small and a large sports hall. Around the sports hall there’s an indoor running track which can be used throughout the year. It is available to school staff and external users as well.

The interior, also designed by atelier PRO, is tailored to the aims of the ambitious programme. The design of the interior also focuses extensively on the various spaces where students can go to chill and meet up with friends. The extreme cold in this area makes the school’s indoor atmosphere important for relaxation.

Ambitous learning environment The Russian client has established a private, non-profit school which aims to be the most prestigious school in the country and to offer the best educational programme through a Russion and an IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum. Students’ personal development is paramount, with the school adopting a holistic approach. It is a true learning environment that provides scope for a range of disciplines, areas of interest and recreational opportunities to foster children’s development. This aim is supported by the campus facilities and functions.

“I’m always in a high school somewhere,” the now 27-year-old actress told Vogue about earlier roles. “And, mind you, I never went to high school.”

The transition is important to her, and nerve-wracking.

“Now, when I have these moments in my career—like, my first time leading a film that’s actually going to be in a theater—I feel like I shrink,” observed Zendaya, “and I can’t enjoy all the things that are happening to me, because I’m like  this ” she says balling up her fists tightly. “I’m very  tense,  and I think that I carry that from being a kid and never really having an opportunity to just  try  sh*t. And I wish I went to school.”

Zendaya did, however, graduate from high school , and a public one at that. After moving to L.A. from Oakland, where she grew up, the actress attended Oak Park High School in Ventura County, which regularly ranks highly on those national “best schools” lists. She did independent study there, and seems to still be grappling with becoming a part of the business at such a young age.

Asked about her goals growing up, the actress turned reflective and told Vogue she’s not sure she felt she had much of a choice.

She added she felt pressure to be “this perfect being, and be everything that everyone needs me to be, and live up to all these expectations.”

A group of whiz kids from a small Manhattan public school will go head-to-head with hundreds of other students from around the world in a prestigious robotics championship this month — after they won a $6,000 grant from NASA.

The tech prodigies from West End Secondary School (WESS) on the Upper West Side will compete in the FIRST Robotics Championship in Houston, held on April 17 through April 20, even though they only formed their robotics team less than a year ago.

The team is headed to the finals after their disc-throwing robot was one of just five out of fifty-two designs selected to head to the finals at the recent New York City regionals.

“I’m a little nervous, but I’m mostly excited,” one of the team’s co-founders, Sonia Benowitz, 14, told The Post Wednesday.

The WESS crew — who will now compete against the most elite high schools globally that specialize in STEM, including Manhattan’s Stuyvesant High School — also edged out other newcomers in the regionals for the coveted Rookie All-Star award.

The award was a huge boost for the team, which was only started in September 2023 by Benowitz and fellow WESS 9th graders Talia Birnbaum, Alexander Cawdron and Annabelle Malschin.

“Me and my friends were like, why don’t we make this a high school program?” Birnbaum, 14, said of how they got the team going after enjoying WESS’ Lego robotics club in middle school.

The newly-formed team even received a $6,000 registration grant from NASA’s Robotics Alliance Project, which funds fledgling robotics clubs, Benowitz’s mom, Samantha Alvarez Benowitz, said.

The WESS robotics team was the only New York City-area applicant chosen for the honor, the proud parent noted.

The team also received a $2,500 cash injection from the Gene Hass Foundation and has sponsorships from Bloomberg and a WESS parent, Alvarez Benowitz said. 

The clever kids even inspired an elective class at their school.

“When we first proposed the high school robotics team, they really loved the idea and they were like, ‘Hey, do you want to make this an elective?’ And we’re like, of course, we want to make it an elective!” Birnbaum explained.

“And on top of that, we’re officially recognized as a club so we get to have school hours and afterschool hours that we can use for robotics work,” she added.

“We meet every day after school, usually on Monday, Tuesdays and Thursdays,” 14-year-old Cawdron said.

The team’s disc-throwing robot is the result of about nine hours of work per week over about three months, Benowitz estimated.

“There are three different teams: mechanical, programming, and operations,” Cawdron told The Post.

Cawdron, Birnbaum, and Benowitz are all on the mechanical team in charge of building the robot.

Last week’s regional competition was the group’s first chance to debut their robot outside of the workshop.

In addition to disc throwing, the robot also has a “climber” mechanism, Benowitz said.

“It basically has two hooks that can lift the entire robot off the ground and onto a chain,” the teen explained.

About 12 or 13 team members are expected to make the trip to Houston, Birnbaum said.

The team is shipping their materials with the team from Stuyvesant High School in order to cut down costs.

“Right now we’re just trying to make as many modifications to the robot as possible and if there are any parts that we need to order we’re ordering them now because we have to ship it by Friday,” Benowitz explained.

“We’re probably gonna do a lot of our building and modifications in Houston, but we’re getting as much done now.”

The price tag for the international championships amounts to a whopping $40,000, which the team is raising money to cover through bake sales and other fundraising, Alvarez Benowitz said.

The supportive mom said New Yorkers can help by donating to the WESS Parents Association.

“This is not just competing, it’s a learning experience,” Birnbaum said of the upcoming Championship.

“You can see how incredible all these teams can be. And basically, the reason why they give out [the Rookie Award] is because they want us to see what other teams can accomplish, what they can learn,” she continued.

“We know we won’t be beating every single team there, that’s just unrealistic for our first year. We just hope to have fun getting our show the experience, and hopefully the robot works,” Cawdron added.

“Our team is very small, like a little family,” he added.

All three students said their experience with the WESS robotics team already has them thinking about their future.

“I do find STEM a very interesting field…I have always just found building things fun, my entire life,” Cawdron said.

Benowitz said that she was considering engineering, while Birnbaum said she is also looking to be “an engineer or a researcher.”

“And that’s pretty much all because of robotics,” she told The Post.

“So, I’m really thankful that I was able to find something that I really liked doing.”
