Business Research Methods , 14e, contains stand-alone chapters that reflect research industry practices using real examples from all areas of business.  In collaborations with over two dozen industry researchers, Schindler writes a real-world research methods book that distinguishes between big data analytics and small data with an emphasis on decision making.  She eloquently covers ethical issues and their solutions, and has added more coverage of process models, sampling how-to, and data preparation. Conscious of the different learning styles of students, Schindler provides appropriate cues for both visual and verbal learners through the use of in-text exhibits, bolded key terms, conceptual photos throughout and research though-leader quotes in PowerPoints for each chapter. She also used various interim GreenBook Research Industry Trends (GRIT) reports to guide the research for this revision. The latest GRIT Report is based on the largest study of research suppliers and users ever conducted. Automation and privacy are hot topics in GRIT, so she added material on both these topics in the 14th edition. This edition is available for purchase with the digital platform McGraw Hill Connect®, which provides a highly reliable easy-to-use homework and learning management solution that embeds learning science and award-winning adaptive tools to improve student results.

A Better Approach to Mergers and Acquisitions

business research pdf book

Far more mergers succeed today than in the past. Here’s how to post a win.

Twenty years ago, consultants at Bain & Company published a book that explored a dispiriting reality: Although companies spent billions of dollars a year pursuing deals, 70% of mergers and acquisitions wound up as failures.

But today those odds have inverted. According to new research by Bain, over the past 20 years firms have done more than 660,000 acquisitions, worth a total of $56 trillion, with deals reaching a peak in 2021. And close to 70% of them have succeeded. Even among the roughly 30% that were less successful, many of the deals still created some value.

What has changed? This article presents four explanations for the turnabout.

Twenty years ago, consultants at Bain & Company published a book that explored a dispiriting reality: Although companies spent billions of dollars a year pursuing deals, 70% of mergers and acquisitions wound up as failures. The book, Mastering the Merger , was released in the wake of a series of corporate marriages that ended badly, including AOL and Time Warner, Daimler and Chrysler, and Citicorp and Travelers. This wasn’t a new phenomenon. Academic studies dating back to the 1970s had concluded that most acquisitions don’t play out the way the investment bankers promise. Even among deals that appeared profitable from investors’ perspective, Bain’s surveys of executives showed that many fell short of the internal projections made to justify the purchase.

Fed’s Beige Book Holds Clues to Predicting Downturn, Study Shows

(Bloomberg) -- A trove of anecdotes on the economy gathered by the Federal Reserve over five decades may hold clues to predicting current US business cycle turning points, according to research published Tuesday.

“Heterogeneity in District-level economic sentiment can be used, over and above the information contained in national economic sentiment, to better forecast US recessions,” said the authors of a report on the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s website.

Using natural language processing, researchers at the Cleveland Fed and Washington University in St. Louis created indexes quantifying the sentiment expressed in the text of all editions of the Beige Book going back to its creation more than 50 years ago.

The study found that these summaries are more timely than gross domestic product in determining when the nation is in a recession. District-level sentiment was more useful, in particular in Chicago, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Richmond, and San Francisco in predicting current US business cycle turning points.

The researchers tracked the sequences of words to gauge sentiment using machine-learning to “infer the meaning of language that might otherwise be ambiguous.”

They also found that since the pandemic, national economic sentiment has tended to paint a rosier picture than that experienced in many individual districts based on their model’s processing of the textual data.

The Beige Book has been published eight times a year since 1970, providing anecdotes and information on economic conditions from the 12 regional Fed banks as well as a national summary. It’s prepared by a designated Reserve Bank on a rotating basis and released about two weeks before each Federal Open Market Committee meeting.
