Muhammad Ali Mirza: Pakistani YouTuber and Religious Scholar

Muhammad Ali Mirza continues to be a controversial figure, navigating a path filled with debates, legal challenges, and the constant scrutiny of his outspoken views on religious matters.

Early Life and Education

Muhammad Ali Mirza, born on October 4, 1977, in Jhelum, Punjab, is a Pakistani YouTuber and religious scholar. His father, Mirza Arshad Mahmud, worked in Allied Bank. Ali Mirza pursued engineering at the University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila, and worked as a mechanical engineer for the Government of Punjab.

Career and Controversies

Ali Mirza gained fame for his online lectures on religious issues and runs a research academy based on his understanding of the Quran and Sunnat. However, his outspoken style has led to numerous controversies, with critics accusing him of using derogatory terms for Muslim saints and displaying excessive pride and ego.

Arrest and Release

In May 2020, Mirza was arrested on suspicion of spreading hate speech towards religious scholars. Notable figures like Pakistani actor Hamza Ali Abbasi and anchor Shafaat Ali condemned his arrest. Mirza was released on May 6, 2020, claiming that his lectures were presented out of context.

Assassination Attempts

Mirza survived two assassination attempts, with the most recent in August 2023 by an attacker armed with a sharp weapon. The attacker was subdued by guards, and investigations are underway. The first attempt occurred in 2017 when an assailant tried to stab Mirza during a picture-taking session at his academy in Jhelum.

Controversial Views and Debates

Mirza’s views on Mu’awiya I, the first caliph of the Umayyad Caliphate, stirred controversy among traditionalist Sunni Muslim ulama in Pakistan. His long-standing rivalry with Deobandist scholar Tariq Masood over Mu’awiya led to a face-to-face debate. Despite initial postponements, the debate took place, with conflicting claims of victory from both sides.

In November 2023, a scheduled debate with Barelvist scholar Mufti Hanif Qureshi was marred by Mirza’s refusal to allow Qureshi inside the academy, leading to Qureshi’s declared “victory.”

Nupur Sharma Case

In June 2022, Mirza criticized Taslim Rehmani for disrespecting Hindu gods in the presence of BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma on Times Now. Mirza claimed Nupur Sharma retaliated by insulting Muhammad. While praised by some, Mirza faced backlash from Indian and Pakistani Ulemas for his comments.

Blasphemy Charges

In April 2023, blasphemy charges were filed against Ali Mirza under section 295C of the Pakistan Penal Code. Accusations include mocking Muhammad and downplaying the legal status of Ahmadis as non-Muslims. Critics argue that Mirza uses derogatory language when referring to certain religious groups.

Despite facing arrests, assassination attempts, and blasphemy charges, he continues to assert his views through online lectures and debates. Mirza’s outspoken style and controversial statements have ignited both support and criticism, leading to heated debates and clashes with fellow scholars.

Graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila, Muhmmad Ali Mirza is a famous Islamic Scholar, Researcher and Preacher. He is the founder of Quran O Sunnat Research Academy, Jhelum. Engr. Ali Mirza is also serving as General Manager (BPS-19) in the Defence Ministry, Government of Pakistan. 

Muhammad Ali Mirza’s Early Life

Ali Mirza received his Primary and Secondary education from Jhelum; after finishing early education, he got admission to UET Taxila, where he completed BSc. (Hons.) Mechanical Engineering. Later, he Joined Defence Ministry as GM (General Manager). He was interested in Islamic Education; therefore, he began reading different Islamic books, and after comprehensive studies, he started delivering video lectures in front of a limited audience. His viewership started increasing day by day as he was asking about the unity of Muslims. Many people claimed that he was disrespecting Ulemas, and one FIR was also lodged against him. His Bayans and Lecture are very popular among youth. Ali Mirza always disinclined different region-based sects and religious groups. In every lecture, he urges his audience to follow the teachings of the Quran and Hadith.

Famous Scholar, Mufti Tariq Masood , and Engr. Ali Mirza does not have exemplary relations. Mufti Tariq Masood asked him for Debate or Munazra for a long time, But Engr. was silent on this topic. a great visionary and scholar of his time was born on 17 th October, 1817 in Delhi. He hailed from a royal and distinguished family. He had enjoyed all the amenities and facilities available to him at home. Being a member of royal family, he was given the best education of the time. In results, he achieved good command over religious literature including religious philosophy, Arabic and Urdu literature as well. He studied Fiqh and Asuli-Fiqh, Quran, Urdu and Arabic literature from the best scholars. Sir Syed exerted all the pleasure in his adolescents. But the death of his father Syed Muhammed Khan in 1838 with whom he was deeply loved and affectionately associated changed the entire course of his life. He left his comfy life and started living more responsible life. Demise of his father was also considered as one of the turning points of his life where he got influenced al lot. Indian Muslims played their role in the intellectual development and enlightenment of Afghanistan. Besides Pashto and Dari/Persian languages, many of them wrote in Urdu and English languages. In Afghan historiography, particularly Urdu writings of Indian Muslims are ignored for some reasons. This research paper attempts to catalogue Muhammad Hussain Khan's works written in Pashto, Dari/Persian, Urdu and English languages about Afghanistan. He was a prolific writer. His seventy one books have been introduced in this article. He is the pioneer of new literary genres in Afghanistan such as drama and novel. His works remained in oblivion for a long time owing to unknown reasons. A cursory look at the subjects and themes of his works, gives an impression that he was an enlightened, moderate and precursor to development in Afghanistan. Qutb al-Dīn Aḥmad ibn 'Abdul Raḥīm, better known as Shāh Walīullāh Dehlawi, (1703-1762) was a great Islamic thinker, reformer and philosopher. He was no doubt the greatest Islamic scholar of India and one of the celebrated thinkers of the Muslim history. Shāh Walīullāh Dehlawi’s main focus was on the Qur'an, Hadīth, 'Aqā'id (beliefs), Kalām (scholastics), Tasawwuf (spiritual sciences), socio-political and ethical philosophy. He lived at a turbulent time in India when the Mughal Empire (1526-1857) was declining swiftly after the bright and powerful reign of Abu al-Muẓaffar Muḥiud-Dīn Muḥammad Aurangzeb ‘Ālamgīr (1618 – 1707) who was last great Mughal Emperor and ruled the widest parts of the greater India of known history for nearly 50 years (1658 –1707). In view of the prevailing political chaos, moral corruption and economic declining of the East, Shāh Walīullāh chalked out a plan of complete revolution. In this context, he expounded rare political, social, economical and religious theories which are scattered in his various works. Maulāna Syed Muḥammad Miyān in his books ‘Ulama-e-Hind ka Shāndār Mādhi (Glorious Past of the Muslim Scholars) and ‘Tahrīk Reshmi Rūmāl’ (Silk Letter Movement) has summarised these thoughts which we present in the next lines with necessary additions of resources, background, historical context as well as conclusion.
