The UM Clinical Program trains its graduates to be scientists and practitioners, with a strong emphasis on clinical science.

The Clinical Program is a founding member of the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science (https://www.acadpsychclinicalscience.org). In addition, the clinical program abides by the American Psychological Association (APA) standards and principles for accreditation.

The PhD program in Clinical Psychology is currently APA-accredited and has been APA-accredited since 1966.

The Clinical Program emphasizes the integration of science and practice. It prepares students to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field and to the practice of clinical psychology. In addition to broad and general training in clinical psychology, the UM Clinical Program provides training in four substantive areas of focus: adult clinical, clinical child, pediatric health, and health clinical psychology. As such, the UM Clinical Psychology Program cuts across the department divisions, as indicated below.

To facilitate the clinical-science training component, the Clinical Program uses a "mentor model" for research training. Applicants are admitted to the program based in part on their "match" with the specific research interests of a faculty mentor. Mentors closely supervise the research activities of the students working in their labs.

Applicants to the UM Clinical Program should identify the specific program area and the specific faculty mentor(s) of interest in their application materials.

Our philosophy on diversity informs our policies for recruitment, retention, and development of faculty, staff, and students, and is embodied in our curriculum and field placements. The UM Psychology department values and celebrates cultural diversity of all kinds, including but not limited to differences in race, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, language, nationality, immigration status, socioeconomic status, religion, age, and ability level. As Miami is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse metropolitan areas in the country, our clinical practica further enhances our students’ development into culturally competent practitioners, clinicians, and researchers.

The UM Clinical Program meets the requirements for licensure as a psychologist in the state of Florida. We have not confirmed the licensing requirements of other states, although our graduates have become licensed in many states outside of Florida. The Department of Psychology at the University of South Florida is committed to furthering our understanding of behavior and mental processes utilizing the methods of science.

Doctoral (PhD) Program in Psychology

Graduate students are trained in both basic and applied research to become independent scholars. Students work with one or more faculty members engaging in a broad range of research. Students can enter with a Master’s degree or earn a Master of Arts Along the Way as part of the Ph.D. program. The Ph.D. program is housed at USF Tampa (e.g., classes and labs); however, some advisors may have their offices at USF Sarasota or USF St. Petersburg.

Master of Arts (MA) in Psychological Sciences

Psychological Sciences is a self-contained M.A. degree that includes the study of biological, social, developmental, and cognitive bases of health and human behavior. (This degree is different from the M.A. en route to the Ph.D. Admission into or completion of the M.A. degree in Psychological Sciences has no bearing on admission into the Ph.D. program above.) The M.A. program in Psychological Sciences is housed on the USF St. Petersburg campus.

Ph.D. Industrial & Organizational Psychology

The Doctoral Program in Industrial and Organizational Psychology at the University of Central Florida educates and trains its students “to generate and integrate scientific and professional knowledge, attitudes and skills so as to further psychological science, the professional practice of psychology, and human welfare. The graduate of this training model is capable of functioning as an investigator and as a practitioner, and may function as either or both, consistent with the highest standards in psychology” (National Conference on the Education and Training of Scientist-Practitioners for the Professional Practice of Psychology, 1990, pp. 7-8). Our departmental mission statement directs us to provide high quality education to include “the dissemination of state-of-the-field theoretical and empirical information, training in the methodological, statistical, and technical skills necessary to conduct psychological research, and practice in the application of psychological knowledge to real-life problems.” Our doctoral program aspires to achieve excellence in research training and to contribute to and perpetuate psychological science and practice through faculty and graduate student involvement in scholarly and professional activities. Our faculty and graduate students advocate for initiatives that affect the profession of psychology and the welfare of individuals and groups, and are active members of professional organizations and contributors to psychological science.

The Ph.D. track in Industrial and Organizational Psychology provides students with training that is consistent with the scientist-practitioner model. As a result of this training students will be prepared to pursue rewarding careers in either academia (university-based teaching and research) or industry (e.g., consulting). I/O students receive training in work motivation theory, organization theory, organizational development theory, attitude theory, career development theory, decision making, human performance/human factors, assessment of individual differences, small group theory, performance appraisal and feedback, criterion theory and development, personnel selection, placement and classification, research methods, statistical methods, job and task analysis, individual assessment, and training theory, program design and evaluation.

Degree Requirements

The doctoral program in Industrial and Organizational Psychology requires approximately four years of full-time study beyond the baccalaureate and approximately three years beyond the master’s. The first few years are devoted to course work and the final year to the doctoral dissertation. After completing all required course work students are required to pass a Candidacy Examination. This examination may be taken a maximum of two times. Failure to pass the examination on two occasions will result in the student being dismissed from the program.

The UCF Psychology Department coordinates the admission process with the UCF Graduate Studies office. In order to enroll in graduate classes, students must have obtained a baccalaureate or higher degree, prior to the start of the term for which the student is admitted, from a regionally accredited institution or from a recognized foreign institution. Students without a baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited institution (or equivalent) are not admitted to graduate degree programs, graduate certificate programs, or graduate nondegree status.

Program Goals:

Consistent with the Department’s Mission Statement, the doctoral program in Industrial and Organizational Psychology’s overall goals are to: (a) train and educate leaders in psychology at the doctoral level within the scientist-practitioner tradition; (b) expand and disseminate scientific knowledge about behavior at work through publications in scientific journals, conference presentations, and teaching; (c) strive to apply psychological principles to solve workplace problems and thus improve the quality of individuals’ work and non-work lives; and (d) produce psychologists who understand the ethics, principles and practice of psychology. Within our broad vision to become renowned scientist-practitioners, our program seeks to enhance scientific understanding of the following three areas: (a) training and team performance, (b) occupational health, and (c) human analytics, big data, and research methods. The overall goals of the training program are consistent with that of the Mission Statement of the Department, the College of Arts and Science, Graduate Studies, and the University.

The Education and Training Committee of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (Division 14 of the American Psychological Association) prepared Guidelines for Education and Training at the Doctoral Level in Industrial-Organizational Psychology (hereafter called, “Guidelines”). The UCF Industrial and Organizational Psychology Ph.D. program is designed to train students according to these American Psychological Association-approved Guidelines.

The Guidelines follow the scientist-practitioner model and a competency-based approach. The Guidelines state that, “taking the scientist-practitioner model seriously means that doctoral education needs to focus on both the theory and application associated with all content areas” (p. 3). All students, regardless of whether they expect to pursue academic or applied careers, must be knowledgeable in theory, research methods, and the application of the content areas to applied practice. Students should familiarize themselves with the description of each competency area as described on the SIOP website (www.siop.org). Students will develop knowledge and skill in these 25 competency areas through formal course work, internship, independent study, and research experiences.

Our program takes advantage of and builds upon a multitude of university and community partnerships consistent with the mission of UCF as a major urban university. There is also an infusion of diversity throughout the program that accurately reflects the surrounding society and can proactively respond to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse workforce. The program emphasizes cultural diversity by actively recruiting quality faculty and talented students with varied cultural backgrounds, as well as by offering courses that emphasize cross-cultural perspectives and considerations.

We have a diverse faculty and student body in the I/O Psychology Program. As of Fall 2020, the Ph.D. program has 34 students. 23 students are female, and 14 of the students are from diverse ethnic backgrounds (3 Hispanic, 1 African American, 8 Asian/Pacific Islander, 1 Hispanic/Alaskan Native/American Indian, 1 Asian/Hispanic). Seven are international students, and 21 of our students did their undergraduate work outside of the state of Florida.

The Department of Psychology at Florida State University offers focused PhD training in the five primary domains of the discipline – Clinical Psychology, Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience, Developmental Psychology, and Social Psychology. Doctoral training in Neuroscience is offered to Psychology students through the interdepartmental FSU Program in Neuroscience. We also offer a Master's degree in Psychology with a specialization in Applied Behavior Analysis. This program allows students to complete their Master’s degree at both the FSU Tallahassee and FSU Panama City campuses.

Doctoral training in all areas occurs in world-class laboratories under the supervision of our internationally recognized faculty. All doctoral students accepted into our programs receive stipend support and tuition waivers – in return we ask students for the intense passion and dedication needed to address the difficult problems of human mind, brain, and behavior.

A clinical psychology program is usually a graduate (i.e. master or doctoral level) program that is designed to teach students the skills and tools needed to become successful practitioners (i.e. clinical psychologist, college instructor, and/or researcher).

The University of Florida (UF) is a public, research university that is located in Gainesville, Florida. It is one of the oldest and most comprehensive educational institutions in Florida. It is also one of the nation’s most diverse universities.

UF was founded in 1853 in Ocala, but moved to Gainesville in the 1860s. This university is one of only 17 public universities connected to the Association of American Universities. It boasts an enrollment of over 50,000 students. Furthermore, it consists of a 2,000-acre campus, with more than 900 buildings (i.e.170 classrooms and laboratories).

It normally takes 6 years to complete the program, which includes a dissertation (research paper), and internship. The tuition cost/fees for this program is approximately $650, per credit, in-state, and approximately $1500, per credit, out-of-state.

Financial aid is available for the clinical psychology graduate program. The department offers financial aid in the form of: grants, loans, and work studies.

University of Central Florida

Department of psychology.

The University of Central Florida’s Department of Psychology trains researchers who can go on to do great work in academia and laboratories around the world. Students in the three psychology doctoral programs have the opportunity to do research in many of the department laboratories under the guidance of expert faculty. As student research is being conducted, they will often have an amazing array of equipment available to them, from those that study EEG and brainwaves to driving simulation gear. At UCF, students have the ability to chart their own academic course that will lead to a required dissertation.

Ph.D in Clinical Psychology

The clinical psychology program at the University of Central Florida gets its students ready for careers in research, academic and clinical environments. This program follows the scientist-practitioner model, which means that UCF’s clinical psychology program produces graduates who can work in both the clinical and research sides of psychology, allowing them to work in academia, applied health service settings, or both.

Students will be expected to complete their degree requirements in five years of full-time study. Most students will also be expected to keep their summers free for classes and other scholastic activities until they graduate. Everyone will be expected to take five years to complete the program, regardless of whether they enter with a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Other academic activities that are expected of all students include participation in an APA-approved internship, master’s thesis, dissertation, and qualifying and comprehensive examinations.

University of Florida

The University of Florida’s Department of Psychology has a lot to offer its graduate students. From the fellowships that are won by students every year to the half-dozen journal articles published by its award-winning faculty on an annual basis to the access to positions after graduation, the University of Florida acts as a rich resource for its graduate psychology students.

Even though a few things sets the University of Florida apart from other research universities, a big innovative program is its faculty-student apprenticeship model. In this program, faculty guide students in research activities and professional development. Ph.D in Counseling Psychology

One of the degrees that the Department of Psychology offers to prospective graduate students is the Ph.D in Counseling Psychology degree. One interesting fact about the clinical and health psychology program at the University of Florida is that it is located within an independent clinical and health psychology department in a health sciences academic environment. What this means is that students interested in health psychology are better able to pursue their dual interests in health and clinical psychology while participating in an APA-accredited internship.

The University of Florida’s School Psychology program is accredited by the APA’s Commission on Accreditation. It is also a “nationally recognized program” approved by The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The Florida Institute of Technology’s graduate psychology departments are known for attracting a diverse pool of students that are intelligent, engaged and mature. Out of 500 applicants, two dozen students are selected for admission across the five graduate psychology programs every year. The University of South Florida’s College of Education prides itself on producing leaders and innovators in the different fields related to education. Upon graduation, its graduate students become well versed in research, theory and practice. To become a licensed psychologist in Florida, you need 4,000 of experience, which equals two complete years of working full time.
The Florida Board of Psychology is who you will apply to for licensing, and you’ll send them $305 for a filing fee, your application, and other supporting documentation.
Pearson VUE administers the official exam you have to take for licensure, which will cost you $48.
Your license has to be renewed every two years and you can do that online, but you have to complete 35 hours of continuing education during that two-year period.

How to Become a Psychologist in Florida

The state of Florida has set aside a strict procedure to earn psychologist licensure in the state. Let’s take a look at what’s required.

Earn a bachelor’s degree, ideally in psychology. It may not be strictly necessary to major in psychology as an undergrad, but a bachelor’s in the field will make you a much better doctoral candidate than some unrelated major. Other possible undergrad majors include biology and social work. Also, for those who already have degrees in some other area, earning a master’s degree could help bolster your doctoral application.
Get your doctorate. Whether a Psy.D. or Ph.D., an APA-accredited doctoral degree is crucial for becoming licensed to practice psychology in the state of Florida. An Ed.D. degree also is accepted in Florida.
Meet state requirements. In addition to a doctorate from an APA-accredited school, applicants in Florida must complete 4,000 hours of supervised experience, 2,000 of which is generally included in Psy.D. and Ph.D. programs. The remaining 2,000 hours must be supervised post-doctoral experience. Applicants must pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology and the Florida Department of Health Psychology Laws & Rules Examination .
Remain licensed, and keep up with requirements. Once they’ve earned their license, Florida psychologists will need to be sure their practice isn’t interrupted by a lapsed license, and these licenses are up for renewal every two years.

Admission Information for Our PhD in Psychology

Admission requirements.

A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited master’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA is required for admission in good standing.
Contact information for 2 recommenders is required (approved recommenders are the student’s former college professors or supervisors).
Statement of Purpose is required (1,000-1,500 words, double spaced).
Departmental approval is required.
Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

Be in your final term and planning to start your doctoral degree after the last day of class for your master’s degree.
Complete a Master’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
Submit an official transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show that you are within 6 credit hours of completion for a 30-48 credit hour master’s degree or within 9 credit hours of completion for a 49+ credit hour master’s degree.
Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new doctoral degree.

Zombie colleges roam the internet, here's how to spot a legitimate, living university

A USA TODAY investigation has exposed websites set up for closed universities posing as viable colleges.

Whoever is behind the copycat sites has been collecting application fees and personal student identity information. Once USA TODAY reached out to them for comment, some of the sites and their application links came down.

The investigation also found a network of fictitious colleges claiming to be accredited, generally the gold standard of legitimate universities in the U.S., however, those accreditors appear to be fabricated as well.  (Do you know more about these colleges, tell us. )

So how can prospective students know which schools actually offer an education and which may be fronts for something else?  Luckily, there are telltale signs.  But it may take some sleuthing.

Is it accredited? 

If a university wants to offer federal student aid, it has to be:

◾ Approved by a college accreditor.

◾ Approved by the state it resides in.

◾ Certified by the U.S. Department of Education, based, in part, on the first two.

Oversight of a school’s academic offerings falls to the accreditor, who is expected to review curriculums regularly. These accrediting agencies also visit schools in person. 

Prospective students can see if a school is truly accredited by looking it up on the federal government’s consumer guide to schools, the College Scorecard . Universities also often list their accreditors on their websites, which students can check against the accreditors’ own lists. Many states maintain a list of schools they have authorized as well.

Check the web address

It can be as simple as just checking the end of the university’s web address. 

Generally, only accredited colleges can use a .edu domain in their URL. Domains ending in .college, .education, or .university aren’t restricted to educational institutions, though. The website backed by former staffers at Marymount California University is marymountcalifornia.edu whereas the imposter website is at marymountcalifornia.education. 

Or pick up your phone and try to reach someone in college admissions. Legitimate colleges have entire staffs eager to talk to prospective students. It’s their job.

Some of the questions to ask:

◾ When is the next application deadline?

◾ What do you need for the application? An essay? Test scores? Do you accept the Common Application , a form used by hundreds of colleges?

◾ How much does your program cost? Do you offer federal financial aid?

How do I tell if a college accreditor is real? 

Some of the imposter websites appeared to have created their own accreditors. Skeptical applicants can verify an accreditor's legitimacy by checking the Education Department’s list of approved agencies .

Note: Some accreditors are set up to approve only specific academic programs. Look instead for institutional accreditation, i.e., approval of all of the schools’ operations. 

Pay close attention to accreditors’ names too. Some counterfeit schools claimed accreditation by the “United States Higher Learning Commission.” That is close to the actual accrediting organization known as “The Higher Learning Commission.”  

Does the school have an address? Google it

Some of the counterfeit universities claim strange addresses. The original Stratford University, for example, was in Virginia, but the imposter says the university is in Kentucky. In that case, a Google Street View search of the Kentucky address reveals no signage for a university. 

Many of the fictitious universities on the website of the Ministry of Higher Education Commission, one of the made-up accreditors, list unusual physical addresses too. The address for “Dakota Hill University,” for example, is actually home to Black Hills State University, a school that is accredited. USA TODAY found other schools with addresses that showed up on Google as nondescript office buildings, even parking garages.

Be aware of the university’s size too. Some legitimate and smaller schools focused on career skills can be in office parks. But such a location would be unusual for large state or private colleges. 

Has anyone else attended this college? Who teaches there? 

Try to find past students. With LinkedIn, it’s easy to locate graduates of any college. Some schools also have alumni associations where prospective students may be able to learn more about the institution. 

Be wary of student testimonials that live solely on a college’s website because those could be fabricated by the operators of the university. Apply the same skepticism to sites that gather anonymous reviews such as Yelp – or even the reviews you might find on Google or Facebook.  

University professors should also have a web presence. Legitimate colleges often have individual web pages for their faculty members. Some college websites also feature past course catalogs. The new Stratford website, in contrast, listed only broad descriptions of its degree offerings and did not indicate who would be teaching those courses. That also was true of other zombie sites.

The popularity of psychology degrees has remained steady in recent years. For aspiring psychologists, bachelor’s degrees are important steps in their academic journey, as they typically continue studying in graduate programs. For others, a bachelor’s degree in psychology can be worth it on its own and help graduates advance in other related careers.

In many cases, psychology degree programs include concentrations that help students focus their studies toward specific career fields, whether they’re on the path to becoming a psychologist or otherwise.

In this article, we outline five types of psychology degree concentrations, using examples from our bachelor’s degree programs here at Columbia Southern University.

1. Criminal Justice

Psychology is becoming increasingly essential in the criminal justice field . A criminal justice degree concentration involves a particular focus on criminology and the theories that inform the U.S. criminal justice system. Students grapple with the theoretical reasons for crime, its psychological impact on victims, and the psychology and motivations of criminal justice professionals.

This popular concentration teaches students to develop a functional understanding of the justice system and learn which psychological, emotional and societal factors influence people to commit crimes.

Classes in a criminal justice concentration may include:

2. Diversity and Inclusion

As the phrase “diversity, equity and inclusion” continues to grow in usage and become a part of our common language, it’s no surprise that businesses are increasingly hiring DEI experts and universities are launching DEI degree programs .

Psychology degree programs with a concentration in diversity, equity and inclusion are focused on the experiences and difficulties faced by people who are marginalized based on their gender, race, sexual orientation, religion or socioeconomic background. These programs aim to provide insight into how to address the issues of bias, marginalization and discrimination in professional, educational and social settings.

A degree concentration focused on diversity and inclusion may include classes such as:

Diversity and Cultural Inclusion
Psychology of Gender
Psychology of Prejudice and Discrimination

3. Forensics

Forensic psychologists work in the criminal justice field, with a particular focus on assessments and research into the mental state of criminals, victims, witnesses and others involved in the criminal justice system. Studying forensic psychology gives students the skills necessary to assess an individual’s mental state and motivations based on interviews, crime scene investigations and other factors.

Lawyers, law enforcement professionals, courts and other entities in the criminal justice system rely on forensic psychology to assess the state, credibility and mental fitness of criminals, victims or others.

4. Industrial/Organizational

Also called I/O psychology , this degree concentration involves applying psychological principles and science to the structure, productivity and outcomes of a workplace or organization. Focusing on the interactions between people and organizational patterns and decisions, I/O psychologists work to uncover the ways personal, emotional and social behavior affects the success or failure of an organization.

I/O psychologists can be focused externally as well, helping companies understand consumer behavior, public relations and ethics. More than some other concentrations, I/O psychology also focuses a great deal on group dynamics and interactions, exploring organizations as large groups, a set of subgroups, and the relations between them. The day-to-day work of I/O psychologists is often strongly intertwined with occupational safety and health , as well as human resources .

Classes in an industrial/organizational psychology concentration may include:

5. Mental Health

Possibly the best-known psychological discipline, a mental health concentration provides students a foundation in the identification, assessment and treatment of mental health issues. Students explore the history and theoretical basis of psychology as it relates to mental health, learn how to use statistics and academic research, and study real-world situations in which examples of common mental health issues unfold.

Because one in five adults struggle with mental health issues , this discipline touches everyone’s life in some way. Studying the many situations and dynamics that create these mental health issues is an essential part of psychology.
