Essay on Healthy Lifestyle

The top secret of being physically fit is adopting a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, taking good care of self, healthy sleep habits, and having a physically active daily routine. Lifestyle is the most prevailing factor that affects one’s fitness level. A person leading a sedentary lifestyle has a low fitness level whereas living a healthier life not only makes a person fit but also extends life. Good health has a direct impact on our personality. A person with a good and healthy lifestyle is generally more confident, self-assured, sociable, and energetic.

A good and healthy lifestyle allows one to relish and savor all the pleasures in life without any complications. Even all the wealth is less valuable when compared to sound health. Having all the luxuries in the world does not fulfill its purpose when one is continuously ill, depressed, or suffering from a significant health complication. A healthy person has a clear and calm perception of everything without prejudice. His actions and decisions are more practical and logical and are hence more successful in life.

A good habit is a key factor for a healthy lifestyle. To maintain a stable body and mind, one needs to inculcate good habits. Waking up early in the morning, regularly exercising or a good morning walk helps to keep our body energetic and refresh our mind. Maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet throughout the day is vital for maintaining a good lifestyle. Too much indulgence in alcohol or smoking excessively is not at all appropriate for a healthy lifestyle.

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is important for maintaining a good lifestyle. When we are self-disciplined then we are more organized and regular in maintaining good health. A disciplined life is a regulated life. A man without discipline is a ship without a rudder. Discipline needs self-control. One who cannot control himself can seldom control others. The level of discipline and perseverance largely determines a person’s success. Self-discipline is the act of disciplining one’s own feelings, desires, etc. especially with the intention of improving oneself. It strengthens our willpower. The stronger our will power the positive will be our decision. It enables us to conquer our own self.

Punctuality

Punctuality is the habit of doing things on time. It is the characteristic of every successful person and everyone must observe punctuality in order to win success in life. Punctuality is necessary for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It should become a habit with us. A punctual person is able to fulfill all his responsibilities and hence is treated with respect in society. It is needed in every walk of life.

Diet is an important component for overall fitness and works best in combination with exercise. A balanced diet and exercise regularly help to maintain good health. It is necessary to reduce weight if one is overweight or obese, failing which one cannot be physically fit for long. For people with obesity, more exercise and a strict regime are necessary, preferably under guidance. There are many ways of making the diet healthier.

Use less sugar and salt while cooking food.

Use less oil while cooking. Avoid deep-frying as much as possible.

Eat more fruits daily. They provide more vitamins and minerals to our bodies.

Add sprouts of gram and moong dal to at least one meal in a day. Add fiber to your diet. Use whole grains instead of polished cereals. Eat lots of salad and yogurt.

Eat fermented food regularly. Fermented food contains many useful bacteria that help in the process of digestion.

Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases

By adopting a healthy lifestyle one can avoid lifestyle diseases. The following are some ways in which we can prevent lifestyle diseases.

Eat a balanced diet that contains important nutrients. One must include more fresh fruits and green vegetables in the diet. Refrain from eating junk food. Stay away from foods that contain large amounts of salt or sugar.

Exercise regularly. Spend more time outdoors and do activities such as walking, running, swimming, and cycling.

One must avoid overindulgence in alcohol, junk food, smoking, and addiction to drugs and medicines.

Avoid spending too much on modern gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, televisions, etc. Spend time on these gadgets for short intervals of time only.

Set a healthy sleeping routine for every day. Waking early in the morning and going to bed early at night should be a daily habit. Lead an active life.

Unhealthy Lifestyle

Bad food habits and an unhealthy lifestyle such as less or no physical activity may lead to several diseases like obesity, high blood pressure or hypertension, diabetes, anemia, and various heart diseases. An unhealthy lifestyle reduces productivity and creativity in a person. It also adversely affects moods and relationships. It leads to depression and anxiety in human beings.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle not only makes a person confident and productive but also drives him to success. A person with a healthy lifestyle will enjoy both personal and social life.

As we transition from 2020 into 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect nearly every aspect of our lives. For many, this health crisis has created a range of unique and individual impacts—including food access issues, income disruptions, and emotional distress.

Although we do not have concrete evidence regarding specific dietary factors that can reduce risk of COVID-19, we do know that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is critical to keeping our immune system strong. Beyond immunity, research has shown that individuals following five key habits—eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, keeping a healthy body weight, not drinking too much alcohol, and not smoking— live more than a decade longer than those who don’t. Plus, maintaining these practices may not only help us live longer, but also better. Adults following these five key habits at middle-age were found to live more years free of chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

While sticking to healthy habits is often easier said than done, we created this guide with the goal of providing some tips and strategies that may help. During these particularly uncertain times, we invite you to do what you can to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and hopefully (if you’re able to try out a new recipe or exercise, or pick up a fulfilling hobby) find some enjoyment along the way.

Healthy Lifestyle and Eating Essay

Healthy eating is the process of keeping the body clean, strong, and healthy at all times (Allen, 1926). Healthy living, on the other hand, means that one should be able to eat the right food, get enough exercise, and maintain cleanliness (James, 1907). Unfortunately, many people do not keep track of these requirements. Thus, they end up with serious health problems, which can be difficult to treat. Prevention of these problems can be accomplished through maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Such a lifestyle is achievable by eating the right food and adhering to all the requirements of healthy living.

The human body needs a balanced diet, which includes enough minerals, fats, vitamins, fiber, and carbohydrates (Albrecht, 1932). These substances are required by the body to facilitate the growth and functioning of body tissues. Low energy foods such as vegetables and fruits have small amounts of calories per unit volume of food. Therefore, it is advisable to eat this combination of foods in large volumes as it contains fewer calories, but has nutrients that are essential for optimal body functionality. Incidentally, one should take food that is free from unhealthy fats, but should ensure that whole grains and proteins go alongside fruits and vegetables.

Apart from choosing the best foods for the body, it is also advisable that people should maintain moderate quantities of food intake. For instance, it is prudent to eat less of unhealthy foods such as refined sugar and saturated fats and more of healthy foods such as vegetables and fruits. This pattern of eating has massive health benefits to its adherents. As such, people should strive to develop good eating habits that can sustain them throughout their lives.

Further, it is recommended that one should eat a heavy breakfast an hour after waking up. The breakfast needs to consist of carbohydrates, healthy fats, and proteins in balanced proportions. It should then be followed by light meals throughout the day. This requirement is important since breakfast helps to initiate the body’s metabolism. The light and healthy meals thereafter help maintain a high body energy level that keeps one active throughout the day (Allen, 1926). People should avoid eating late at night. Early dinners are advisable followed by an average of 15 hours of no food until breakfast time the next morning. Past studies show that this pattern helps regulate body weight (James, 1907).

People who are diagnosed with lifestyle diseases such as anemia, high blood pressure, and diabetes among others are advised to follow diets that are rich in fruits and vegetable content (Allen, 1926). Depending on the stage of illness, such people should strictly watch what they eat. For example, high blood pressure patients should cut down on sodium, which is mainly found in salt. They should also avoid foods that have high cholesterol and saturated fats since diets of this sort prompt a high risk of artery clogging. Consequently, it increases the risk of heart attacks and blood vessel diseases (Albrecht, 1932). Further, they need to control the amount of carbohydrates they take.

Carbohydrates should only account for 50% of their daily calories (Allen, 1926). Finally, they are discouraged from foods with a high phosphorous content since they may lead to bone diseases (Allen, 1926). Overweight people constitute another special needs group. They should reduce weight to be healthy. Consequently, they need at least 30 minutes of rigorous physical exercise everyday and a lean diet.

In conclusion, all these groups of people should increase their water intake. Water is essential in the human body since it facilitates the regulation of all body functions. As such, it enhances body health. In this regard, people should strive to take at least eight glasses per day. Apparently, healthy living calls for discipline and commitment. If people foster these two values in the lifestyles, the world will be full of healthy people.

7 Positive Lifestyle Factors That Promote Good Health

How to Live Long and Well

You can't change your genes, or even much of the environment around you, but there are lifestyle choices you can make to boost your health. Being informed and intentional about diet, activity, sleep, and smoking can reduce your health risks and potentially add years to your life.

This article looks at seven lifestyle factors that are backed by the best evidence when it comes to your health over the long run. It shows you why they matter and how to begin making positive changes.

Getting the Right Amount of Sleep

Getting the right amount of sleep, and doing so regularly, is first on the list. It's often missed because people focus on diet and exercise, but the link between sleep and life expectancy is supported by research.

What surprises some people is that the relationship is a U-shaped curve. This means that too little and too much sleep can affect your health. In one study, sleeping for a long duration (defined as more than 10 hours a night) was associated with psychiatric diseases and higher body mass index BMI.

Another study found that sleeping nine or more hours a night had an increased incidence of stroke of 23% compared to those sleeping seven to eight hours a night. Those who slept over nine hours and napped for 90 minutes or more had an 85% increased stroke risk.

A 2021 study of 1.1 million people in Europe and the United States found that 25% of people slept less than what is recommended for their ages. More than half of all teens don't get enough sleep. Adults do better but have more insomnia and poor sleep quality.

A good night's sleep is important to recharge both the body and mind. It helps the body repair cells and get rid of wastes. It also is important in making memories, and sleep deprivation leads to forgetfulness.

Even if you intend to sleep well, health issues can disrupt your plan. Sleep apnea , for example, can greatly increase health risks.

Sleep apnea affects millions of people, but it's believed that many cases are being missed. Part of the reason is that symptoms like snoring, or waking up gasping for air, don't happen in every case. Sleep apnea can present with a number of surprising signs and symptoms , such as teeth grinding and depression.

If you have any concerns, talk to your healthcare provider about a sleep study . There are treatments, like CPAP , that lower risk and improve quality of life. Changes in your sleep patterns can signal other health issues too, so see your healthcare provider for a checkup if anything changes.

Eating Well-Balanced Meals

A healthy diet gives you energy and lowers your risk for heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other diseases. Some of these conditions have proven links to food and nutrition, as is the case with red meat and colorectal cancer.

Taking steps toward a lifelong change in diet will help more than jumping on the latest fad diet does. You may have heard author Michael Pollan's signature phrase: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." Of those plants, choose a rainbow of colors to make sure you get all the nutrients you need.

One place to begin is with the well-regarded Mediterranean diet. It's rich in many of the healthiest foods and naturally limits less healthy choices. The more you follow the Mediterranean diet, the lower your risk of a host of diseases.

A 2018 review looked at over 12 million people and the risk of over a dozen chronic diseases. The researchers found that people who chose a Mediterranean diet lowered their risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and other diseases.

The Mediterranean diet includes a lot of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, "good" oils, and plenty of herbs and spices. It doesn't recommend highly processed foods, refined grains, or added sugar.

Making Time for Physical Activity

Thirty minutes a day of physical activity protects heart health. It also lowers the amount of bone loss as you age, and with it the risk of osteoporosis . It's so important that a 2021 study of colon cancer survivors found that living in a "green" community that is friendly for exercise reduced the risk of death.

A 2017 review in Lancet found that people participating in moderate physical activity every day had a lower risk of heart disease and overall mortality, no matter what their income level.

Best of all, physical activity is a low-cost way to boost your health and even save you money. Sometimes your health may limit your exercise options, but you can keep moving by washing your windows, mowing your lawn, sweeping a sidewalk, and other basic tasks.

Once you are past age 65, you may benefit by adding balance and flexibility exercises, but keep moving too. Whether you dance, garden, swim, or go biking, choose moderate-intensity exercise that you know you'll enjoy.

Keeping a Healthy Body Weight

Obesity is associated with a shorter lifespan and a higher risk of many diseases. The good news is that just being somewhat overweight does not reduce your longevity. In fact, for those over age 65, it's better to be on the high side of normal than the low side.

A 2018 study looked at body mass index (BMI) and mortality over a period of 24 years. A BMI considered between 19 and 24 is considered "normal" or healthy. For those who were in the range classified as obesity, a BMI of 30 to 35 meant a 27% increase in mortality. A BMI of 35 to 40 was linked to a 93% increase.

Among those with a BMI in the overweight range (BMI 25 to 30), mortality was only higher among those who smoked. People with a BMI on the high side of normal (BMI 24, for example) had the lowest death risks.

BMI Limitations

BMI is a dated, flawed measure. It does not take into account factors such as body composition, ethnicity, sex, race, and age.  Even though it is a biased measure, BMI is still widely used in the medical community because it’s an inexpensive and quick way to analyze a person’s potential health status and outcomes.

There isn't any real magic when it comes to keeping a healthy weight. Eating a nutritious diet and exercising daily   are the true secrets for most people. If you're struggling, talk with your healthcare provider. But keep in mind that fad diets don't work, and your greatest hope for success lies in making long-term changes.

Avoiding Smoking or Chewing Tobacco

Instants / E+ / Getty Images

Smoking accounts for some 480,000 deaths per year in the United States alone. Added to this are another 16 million people who are alive but coping with a smoking-related illness . If you want the chance to live well for however long you live, don't smoke or chew tobacco.

The list of diseases and cancers linked to smoking is long. If you're finding it hard to quit, and you think illness comes only later in life, it may help to think of more short-term goals. Perhaps it's too expensive, or indoor smoking bans limit your social outings.

Or maybe the midlife concerns will help you! Smoking speeds up wrinkling of the skin. There's also a link between smoking and erectile dysfunction in men. Quitting, or avoiding tobacco in the first place, will save lives but protect its quality too.

Limiting or Avoiding Alcohol

Dean Mitchell / E+ / Getty Images

Despite the hype over red wine and longevity , alcohol should be used only in moderation, and for many people, not at all. Red wine has been found to offer some protective health effects, but there are other ways to get these benefits.

Red wine is rich in flavonoids, particularly the nutrient resveratrol . Resveratrol, however, is also found in red grapes themselves, in red grape juice, and even peanuts.

Moderate alcohol consumption (one drink per day for women, two for men) may lower heart disease risk. Yet a link between alcohol and breast cancer suggests that even this amount should be used with caution.

Women who have three drinks per week have a 15% higher risk of breast cancer and the risk goes up another 10% for every additional drink they have each day.

It is important to note that alcohol is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Group 1 is the highest-risk group, which also includes asbestos, radiation, and tobacco. Alcohol causes at least seven types of cancer. The more alcohol you drink, the higher your cancer risk.

Higher levels of alcohol can lead to health and other problems, including a greater risk for:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Some cancers

Moderate intake of alcohol may be part of a healthy lifestyle in special moments, as long as you have no personal or family problems with alcohol abuse. As long as everyone understands the risks, there are times you may drink a toast to your good health!

Managing Mental Health

Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, act, and relate to others.

Managing mental health includes factors such as managing stress and maintaining social connections. Research shows that people who report being happier live as much as four to 10 years longer than less happy people.

One way to increase happiness is to manage stress. Although we can't eliminate stress entirely, there are some ways to limit it:

  • Take time to unwind , such as doing deep breathing exercises, yoga, meditation, taking a bath, or reading a book. Schedule regular times for these and other healthy activities.
  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news and social media.
  • Practice gratitude by reminding yourself daily of things you are grateful for. Be specific. Write them down at night, or replay them in your mind.
  • Focus on the positive by identifying and challenging your negative and unhelpful thoughts.
  • Find a hobby. Research shows activities like gardening, singing, playing a musical instrument, and other hobbies are linked to living longer, healthier lives Hobbies may reduce stress and provide mental stimulation.

Research also shows that staying socially connected positively impacts health and longevity. Getting together regularly with friends or family members can provide emotional support and pleasure. Other ways to foster connection may include:

  • Connecting with community or faith-based groups
  • Volunteering with others
  • Joining a local group, such as a hiking club, knitting group, or other interest group

For a long, healthy life, the seven key lifestyle behaviors include getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, being physically active, maintaining a healthy body weight, not smoking, limiting alcohol, and managing mental health.

These factors may seem like a part of the common-sense advice, but there's a reason for that. They're all backed by data, and new medical research continues to point in the same healthy direction.

Junk food vs Healthy Food

If we look at the scenario today, we see how the fast-food market is increasing at a rapid rate. With the onset of food delivery apps and more, people now like having junk food more. In addition, junk food is also tastier and easier to prepare.

However, just to satisfy our taste buds we are risking our health. You may feel more satisfied after having junk food but that is just the feeling of fullness and nothing else. Consumption of junk food leads to poor concentration. Moreover, you may also get digestive problems as junk food does not have fiber which helps indigestion.

Similarly, irregularity of blood sugar levels happens because of junk food. It is so because it contains fewer carbohydrates and protein . Also, junk food increases levels of cholesterol and triglyceride.

On the other hand, healthy food contains a plethora of nutrients. It not only keeps your body healthy but also your mind and soul. It increases our brain’s functionality. Plus, it enhances our immunity system . Intake of whole foods with minimum or no processing is the finest for one’s health.

In short, we must recognize that though junk food may seem more tempting and appealing, it comes with a great cost. A cost which is very hard to pay. Therefore, we all must have healthy foods and strive for a longer and healthier life.

Establishing healthy behaviors that stick

By Mayo Clinic staff

Many people make healthy resolutions or set goals with the best intentions, only to see them fall short or break down completely over time. It's common to read about research and medical studies that promote a healthy lifestyle's psychological and physical benefits. Living a healthy lifestyle can even help prevent cancer . So why do you still fall short of your intentions to make healthy diet and lifestyle changes?

A few common reasons people tend to give up on changes to behaviors include:

  • Perceived dislike of exercise Studies show that people overestimate how difficult it is to exercise. As a result, you may tend to give up before you even begin a new exercise program or training regimen.
  • Toxic eating environment Quick, cheap and tempting food options are a constant pressure from a multibillion-dollar marketing industry. These highly targeted psychological messages may leave you wondering if you're in charge of your eating behaviors or, instead, are being conditioned to choose convenience over more nutritious options.
  • Setting too many goals or creating an all-or-nothing plan People tend to change too many behaviors or routines at a time. Creating restrictive changes that lead to feelings of deprivation or lower mood can result in an "on or off" or "all or nothing" plan that can't be maintained.
  • Consistency is complicated Whether you choose a lifelong goal or a temporary objective, staying motivated requires complex planning and follow-through. Establishing healthy behaviors that stick requires a different mindset and recognition that putting effort toward something important promotes an improved mood and well-being.

Tips to stay motivated

If you want to make your habits permanent, you need to:.

  • Alter your mindset and challenge negative thoughts and beliefs.
  • Anticipate lapses and recover quickly.
  • Remind yourself that you deserve to feel good and that your plan will get you there.
  • Start with one small change, celebrate success and add more changes over time.
  • Use positive self-talk such as "I'm an exerciser" and "I'm someone who eats healthy options," to embed identity shifts into your plan.

Your thoughts determine how you feel about yourself, which affects your behavior, mood, interactions with others and progress toward your goals. When you identify positive thoughts, make sure to practice them.

Consider using this path to help spur on your healthy behaviors:

  • Develop  positive and realistic goals  for yourself.
  • Find multiple ways to remind yourself of your goal.
  • Identify why you want to meet this goal.
  • List the behaviors you feel are unhealthy.
  • Select one of the identified behaviors that you would like to change.
  • Brainstorm ways to change this behavior and start small.
  • Devise a plan to promote this strategy.
  • Identify potential obstacles that could interfere with your goal.
  • Identify your options for support.
  • Set a date for when you want to achieve your goal.
  • Counter destructive thoughts with more constructive ones.
  • Consider what you must do to maintain change when you complete your goal.
  • Don't expect perfection; anticipate imperfection.
  • Evaluate your successes when you reach your goal.
  • Note how you feel now that you have worked to meet your goal.
  • Select another goal and restart the process when you're ready.

Don't let a lapse keep you from your goal

A lapse is a slight error, slip or pause in progress most people face at some point during the journey. Relapse occurs when lapses string together and a person returns to their former behavior. Remember that a lapse is normal and doesn't always lead to a relapse. Anticipate that a setback can and will occur. Then, figure out which triggers led to the lapse.

Common triggers include:

  • A certain time of day.
  • A challenging life event.
  • Negative emotions, boredom or a shift from your initial intentions.
  • Particular foods and visual cues.
  • People who have an influence on your life.
  • Social events, celebrations or your customs.

Remember, the danger is not the slip but how you react to that lapse. — Lisa Hardesty, Ph.D.,  is a clinical psychologist at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato , Minnesota.

I almost died after my routine C-section. Things got worse from there

Months later, I'm still processing the trauma from my birth experience.

Nothing about having babies has been easy for me. After struggling with unexplained infertility for a year and a half, my first pregnancy ended in an unplanned cesarean section.

So, the second time around, that was the plan, too. Thankfully, my son was born healthy, but immediately after my routine C-section, things started to take a turn.

Rather than feeling overwhelmed with joy, I felt disoriented and lightheaded. I struggled to keep my eyes open. I'd been up at 4 a.m. that day and had just given birth, so I thought it was normal. I was vaguely aware nurses had taken my newborn to be cleaned and weighed. I closed my eyes to rest while they stitched me back up.

Looking back, I should’ve known something was wrong. When my first son was born, I couldn’t stop staring at him. I was alert in the operating room, even though I had been in labor for 30+ hours beforehand. This time, I felt an overwhelming urge to sleep.

When my first son was born, I couldn’t stop staring at him. I was alert. ... This time, I felt an overwhelming urge to sleep.

The medical staff was discussing my blood pressure, which had dropped alarmingly low. I was given IV fluids, and I started to wake up a bit. Minutes later, I experienced the lightheaded sensation again and started dry heaving. My husband and baby were quickly shuttled out of the OR, and it became clear to me that something was wrong.

As I was lying on the table, my doctor’s face appeared above mine.

“I am going to feel around in your uterus for a clot,” she said, one hand inside me and the other pushing on my belly. “If I can’t feel anything, I will have to go back in.”

Her search was futile. She couldn’t determine what was going on and my blood pressure continued to drop. The team quickly decided to send me back into surgery.

“A lot of people are going to come in the room now. They are all here to help. Try to stay calm,” my doctor said.

“I’m scared. I have two babies now,” I said. My doctor replied that they would do everything they could to keep me safe.

“If we need to, we will perform a life-saving hysterectomy,” she said.

I thought to myself: Is my life in danger?

I was terrified, but the next thing I knew I had a mask over my mouth for anesthesia.

Later, I learned that the surgery was about two hours long, and that I suffered from uterine atony, a condition in which the uterus muscles do not contract after birth, leading to massive blood loss. I hemorrhaged three liters of blood (about half the blood in the body) during the surgery. The doctors had to stitch my uterus up to force it to contract.

“Hemorrhages occur in approximately 1% to 6% of births according to the National Institutes of Health,” says Dr. Jill Purdie , board-certified OB-GYN and medical director at Pediatrix Medical Group in Atlanta. She adds that excessive blood loss is more common during a C-section since the uterus has to be cut open to deliver the baby.

I can’t imagine what my poor husband was going through, holding our newborn baby and seeing the worried look on the doctors’ faces.

“I wasn’t sure if you were going to make it,” he said to me after the surgery.

When I woke up, an orthopedist stood over me and told me that my arm would be OK.

My arm? “I’m confused,” I said.

During the surgery, an IV had slipped out of my vein and filled my arm with fluid. It’s a rare accident called an IV infiltration. My arm was so swollen that I could not close my hand. My entire arm, from wrist to elbow, was purple for a month. Luckily, it was mostly cosmetic, but another thing to add to my medical history.

Natalie Rizzo during birth

I was wheeled to the recovery room, where I finally held my new baby. I stayed there all day for monitoring and eventually headed to the labor and delivery floor that night.

The next day, I had an abdominal CT scan to check on the internal bleeding. After, the physician’s assistant visited my room.

“The CT scan of the abdomen was normal, but the image showed something in the lower portion of the lungs,” she said. “How are you feeling? Any shortness of breath?”

“No,” I responded. I felt like I had had a C-section — so, not great — but I wasn't experiencing any severe pain, bleeding or alarming symptoms.

“The doctors suspect you have a pulmonary embolism, but we won’t be sure until we do another CT scan,” the PA said.

I was rushed to imaging while my husband stayed behind with the baby. The results returned quickly, and the PA told me the suspicions were correct.

“You have blood clots in both lungs. Strangely, you seem to be asymptomatic,” she said.

“I’m sorry, what?” I thought I was going home soon and now, on top of almost bleeding out, I had a new serious health complication — one that kills people.

Natalie Rizzo during birth

According to Dr. Danielle Wright-Terrell, an OB-GYN for the U.S. Air Force and CEO of HONEY , a postpartum support platform, “Venous thromboembolism (VTE), or blood clots, is a serious complication after birth (that) accounts for 9.3% of all maternal deaths.” She says that those who have a C-section are four times more likely to have a blood clot.

I’m lucky they caught mine when they did. Rather than going home to my 2-year-old, I was hooked up to an IV blood thinner. These meds don't break up the clot, but they prevent it from getting bigger and stop new clots from forming. The doctors were worried that the blood thinners could cause another bleeding event, so I was moved to a different floor for 24-hour monitoring.

To put the icing on the incredibly crappy cake, with the trauma of my delivery, my breast milk hadn’t come in yet, so my baby stayed behind in the nursery to be fed. I was incredibly thankful to the nurses caring for him during that time. My new room didn’t have a chair for my husband to sleep in, so I sent him home to sleep for the night.

Hooked up to a bunch of machines, I tried to sleep. I woke at 4 a.m. and burst into tears. The whole experience was such a whirlwind that I didn’t even have time to process it.

I was scared, sad and confused about why this was happening to me. I was healthy and didn’t have a high-risk pregnancy. I even kept running until I was 6 months pregnant, and I went to the gym most days until a week before birth.

After the 24-hour observation, the pulmonologist said I was doing well and could go home on blood thinners.

“You can’t breastfeed on these medications though,” he said.

I didn’t care. I just wanted to go home and see my 2-year-old, but I was also terrified that something else would happen to me.

What if the blood clots traveled somewhere else in my body? What if I started to bleed internally again? The doctors assured me those things were highly unlikely.

My total hospital stay was five days. After hemorrhaging and developing blood clots in the lungs, I went home and started my postpartum life.

Coping with a traumatic birth

Between the little sleep and learning to manage two under two, I didn’t have time to think about the events of those few days. But now, five months later, the birth replays in my head like a movie.

With two under two, I didn't have time to think about the events of those few days. But months later, the birth replays in my head like a movie.

“A birth experience that does not go according to plan can make you feel like things are out of your control,” says Dr. Nina E. Ross, Section Chief of Reproductive Psychiatry at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

Dr. Kara Kushnir, psychotherapist and the founder of A Work of Heart Counseling , adds: “Following a traumatic birth, many individuals experience dissociation and struggle to feel present and connect with their baby, and they are more susceptible to postpartum anxiety, depression, OCD or postpartum PTSD."

Therapy is beneficial to process trauma , but Ross also recommends focusing on small everyday decisions, like choosing what clothes to wear, to help regain that sense of control. “It may be helpful to share your birth story with others, such as with loved ones, therapists or a support group … to validate your own experience, process the event and feel supported by others,” says Ross.

A few months after giving birth, I started therapy to process my trauma. My therapist says we are working to put words to the movie that plays in my head. She assures me this will help manage my residual anxiety.

As for my physical health, I’m still on blood thinners, but my cardiologist thinks I can come off the medication soon. At six months postpartum, I'll have an echocardiogram to see if the clots have dissipated.

I also started running again, and I have been amazed at my progress. I’m signed up for two half marathons this spring and can’t wait to cross those finish lines.

Earth Day 2024: Planet Vs. Plastic

SAP

Born in 1970, Earth Day has evolved into one of the largest civic events of all time. When we observe the 54 th Earth Day on April 22, the health and safety of the planet couldn’t be timelier, especially when it comes to dealing with the proliferation of plastic.

Over the past 60 years, around eight billion tons of plastic has been produced, according to a recent study in the journal Science Advances — 90.5 per cent of which has not been recycled . As a result, this year’s Earth Day theme— “Planet vs. Plastic”— demands a 60% reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040.

Just how big of a challenge is this? What type of numbers are we talking about? Here’s some perspective:

  • In 1950, the world produced just two million tons of plastic. We now produce over 450 million tons .
  • Half of all plastics ever manufactured have been made in the last 15 years.
  • P roduction is expected to double by 2050.
  • More than one million plastic water bottles are sold every minute.
  • Every year, about 11 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the ocean.
  • Only 9% of plastics ever produced has been recycled.
  • Plastics often contain additives that can extend the life of products, with some estimates ranging to at least 400 years to break down.

Plastic is literally everywhere

An advertisement from the American Plastics Council in a 1997 edition of the New Yorker suggested that plastic wrappers and containers were the “sixth food group” that were there to keep contaminates out of our food.

Close up shot of microplastics on a hand.

In a twisted type of irony, Microplastics are now in almost everything and everywhere. Even in in much of the food we eat and water we drink! Microplastics are tiny particles of plastic (from ½ inch to microscopic) is synthetic that never disappears. As Stephen Jamieson recently explained in a Future of Supply Chain podcast, “We're ingesting a credit card size worth of plastic every single week as humans, and the real health impacts of that, we don't truly know and don't truly understand.”

What is the world doing about it?

In the Podcast, Stephen discussed the upcoming fourth session of the United Nations Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee he is attending in Ottawa, Canada from 23rd to the 29th of April. The goal is to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, that will, as Stephen stated, “by early next year, actually ratify a new treaty at the United Nations to eliminate plastic pollution by 2040”.

What can businesses do about it?

Think about optimizing your entire supply chain for sustainability, rather than just individual functions.

For example, you may be pulling certain levers in your design processes, or manufacturing plants, only to realize that the sustainability gains in that process are offset by much a much larger negative impact on logistics or at the end of life of a product.

Perform Life Cycle Assessments on your products

A Life Cycle Assessment is a method for the compilation and evaluation of the inputs, outputs and the potential environmental impacts of a product throughout its life cycle (ISO standard 14040).

In simple terms, it’s a way by which you can understand the sustainability footprint of a product throughout it’s full lifecycle, from “cradle to grave.”

By enabling product footprints periodically across the entire product lifecycle, you can gain insights on the environmental impacts of your products across the entire lifecycle for disclosure and internal product and process optimization.

Design with end of life in mind

As Earthday.org says, “We need to invest in innovative technologies and materials to build a plastic-free world”.

And this starts with how we design products and packaging material in the goods we manufacture and deliver. The sooner we phase out all single use plastics, the better. We need responsible design and production solutions that facilitate a product and package redesign that enables companies to engage in the circular economy and reduces waste without sacrificing quality.

Enforce compliance at each step of the product lifecycle

If you look at most companies’ website for their mission statement or purpose, sustainability is front and center. And supply chain sits right in the middle, both as a major contributor to the problem, and a major opportunity to improve.

But you can’t manage regulatory and sustainability requirements, track registrations and substance volumes, classify products, and create compliance documents, as well as package, transport, and store hazardous materials properly with accurate labeling you won’t be able to measure how you are performing.

This takes a stepwise approach to:

Record: The first step is to gather all necessary ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) data along the entire value chain. This data cannot be found easily in one single system. Currently this is a highly manual and therefore time consuming effort compounded by data quality challenges.

Report: There are more than 600 ESG frameworks/standards out there and they are being constantly developed further (Take the evolving plastics taxes across Europe for example). The requirements for companies are constantly changing. A high effort is required to keep up with the current requirements to report along the respective regulatory & voluntary frameworks.

Act: In many companies sustainability action is already happening but in many cases this this is still partly disjoint from the strategy or not yet covering all business processes

What can we as individuals do about it?

The reality is that everybody has a role to play in the “Planet vs. Plastics battle, and the sustainability of the planet in general.

Little things like using reusable bottles and straws and bringing reusable bags to the store are great first step.

You can also go to earthday.org to learn more about the battle between planet vs. plastics, and find an event near you where you can help clean up the planet.

Let’s make every day Earth Day, to protect this beautiful rock we live on for future generations.

To learn more, listen to The Future of Supply Chain Podcast – Earth vs. Planet .

Former Kansas City Chiefs cheerleader Krystal “Krissy” Anderson and her husband, Clayton Anderson, felt like they had finally received another chance to grow their family after they learned last November that she was pregnant again. Her pregnancy with baby James had ended in a stillbirth. But at age 40, Krystal was pregnant again.

Clayton told ABC News he saw their second chance for parenthood as a “little sign from” James. Despite the couple believing he was sending them a hopeful message, they had concerns. Krystal was Black. She was older. She’d lost a child before.

Just one of those factors was particularly risky, but the Andersons were navigating a frightening trifecta. So, they requested high-risk care from the onset, Clayton told ABC. But doctors told the couple they would have to wait until Krystal was three and a half months pregnant, he said, as you “can’t start a plan with maternal-fetal medicine or the high-risk maternity doctors until you get to week 14.”

Black maternal health

“All pregnancy is high risk, especially, moreso, when you’re a woman of color, or you’re older,” Clayton contended, “and they should be treated that way from the start.”

Krystal died March 20, four weeks short of getting the specialized care she and her husband wanted. Unfortunately, the outcome for Krystal is the same for many Black mothers, who are at least three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications when compared to white women. Charlotte Willow, the Andersons’ daughter, died four days before her mother. And like her, Charlotte became another tragic data point that shows that Black babies — even those from wealthy moms — die at a higher rate than those born to poor white mothers.

The Black community is familiar with well-known and well-off Black mothers having to fight for themselves to receive appropriate care during pregnancy and after delivery. Tennis champion Serena Williams had to advocate for herself after several blood clots developed in her lungs following the birth of her first daughter, Alexis Olympia, via C-section in 2017. Four years prior, actress Kyla Pratt had experience with a dismissive care provider who initially ignored her contraction concerns when she was giving birth to her second child.

Clayton Anderson is now speaking out against “one-size-fits-all” prenatal care in honor of his late wife, who, at 40, was of advanced maternal age and automatically more at risk for pregnancy complications.

In December, a month after learning about her pregnancy, Krystal had a miscarriage scare. In the 16th week, she underwent a cerclage operation to ensure her cervix would remain viable for the rest of the pregnancy. Her next doctor’s visit was scheduled for week 20.

“Expecting somebody who’s had a loss to go four weeks in between seeing their care providers … That’s the same protocol that’s done for a 23-year-old that’s very healthy,” said Clayton. “It can’t be a one-size-fits-all.”

After complications in March, doctors made plans to admit his wife into a specialized hospital unit that could handle a periviable birth if she lasted to 22 weeks. During her week 20 visit, Clayton said doctors began prescribing semi-bedrest for two weeks to help her reach that point.

On Saturday, March 16, still in week 20, Krystal began experiencing back pains, which her OB doctor suggested could be a sign of contractions and dehydration. After running tests, Clayton said doctors discovered amniotic fluid and eventually stopped detecting a heartbeat in the fetus.

Krystal underwent surgery the following morning and returned on a ventilator and dialysis machine, experiencing kidney, liver and lung failure. She died within days.

The Mayo Clinic defines sepsis as “a serious condition in which the body responds improperly to an infection.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , sepsis affects 1.7 million adults in the U.S. each year, resulting in nearly 270,000 deaths annually.

Medical journal Healthcare , published in the National Library of Medicine, asserts that Black and Hispanic communities have higher morbidity and mortality rates in sepsis than the white population. While systemic bias against minority groups are often to blame for the disparities, the journal noted that “a growing body of literature has found patient, community, and hospital-based factors to be driving racial differences.”

According to ABC News, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission declined to provide specific details surrounding Krystal Anderson’s care due to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, but the hospital sent condolences to the family.

“Our hearts are hurting in this tragic situation,” they said in a statement, ABC reported. “We, along with the independent providers who deliver care in our facilities, strive to provide the best possible care to every patient based on their specific needs and circumstances. We extend our prayers and support to family members and loved ones experiencing the devastating loss of precious life.”
