Doctoral Studies

Doctoral dissertations

Professors Binder, Kriebaum, Marboe, Reinisch, Waibel, and Wittich supervise dissertations in public international law as part of the doctoral programme in Law or the PhD in Interdisciplinary Legal Studies. General requirements are suitable qualifications of the candidate and an appropriate dissertation topic. The duration of the doctoral programme is 3 years. Further information on general admission requirements can be found here: https://doktorat.univie.ac.at/en/doctoralphd-programmes/law/curriculum/ The Department does not have any scholarships/funding available for PhD students. The University has some funding available, https://forschung.univie.ac.at/services/foerderungen/praedoc-foerderprogramme/ . Any questions about funding need to be directed to the University, rather than the Department for International Law. 1st Step: Apply for a Confirmation of willingness to supervise

To be admitted to the doctoral/PhD programme, one of the international law professors needs to confirm in writing that they are willing to supervise the project. You need to apply to the Department of International Law for a Confirmation of willingness to supervise. This first step precedes the application to the University for admission to the doctoral degree (see 2nd step below). To obtain this confirmation from professors Binder, Kriebaum, Marboe, Reinisch, Waibel, and Wittich, you need to send a written application consisting of the following documents exclusively to the Secretariat of the Department of International law and International relations (Ms Martina Terp):

  • Description of the dissertation project (1000 words maximum, plus references, up to one page)
  • Name of the requested supervisor
  • Letter of motivation (500 words maximum)
  • Academic CV (1-3 pages)
  • Copy of your Magister-Diploma or equivalent academic degree
  • Transcripts of all academic degrees
  • If applicable, reports on previously written papers (Diploma or LL.M. theses etc.)
  • Optional: Evidence of English or German language ability (C1 level) (e.g. ÖSD, Goethe, TOEFL, IELTS).
  • Optional: two letters of recommendation or names, telephone numbers, and email addresses of two referees who can speak to your aptitude for doctoral studies. Referees must send the letters of recommendation directly to the Secretariat.

Applications will be considered twice per year. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The deadlines to apply for the confirmation of willingness to supervise are May 31 and November 30 . The department can only review applications on these two dates and therefore recommends to plan an application well in advance and to submit it at least 6 months before the planned start of the doctorate. Decisions on whether a and who will provide a confirmation of willingness to supervise will typically be made within a month of the deadline.

2nd Step: Apply to the University for Admission to the PhD With the confirmation of willingness to supervise that you obtained in the first step, candidates can submit their Request for Admission online in u:space (with the required attachments) to the doctoral programme in Law or the PhD in Interdisciplinary Legal Studies. There is no deadline for such applications, but the processing takes time. DLE Research Services and Career Development/Centre for Doctoral Studies have sole responsibility for processing these requests. You can only submit such an application once you have obtained the confirmation of willingness to supervise in the first step. The University rejects all applications without such a confirmation. 3rd Step: Doctoral thesis agreement

A doctoral thesis agreement will be concluded after a minimum of one semester and a maximum of two semesters of the doctoral/PhD programme. A further prerequisite to participate in this seminar is the successful completion of a lecture according to §5(2)(a) Doctoral Programme, e.g. 380024 VO Methods for doctoral students in International Law. The completion of a seminar from the dissertation subject, in an earlier or the same semester, is recommended. To obtain a doctoral thesis agreement with professors Binder, Kriebaum, Marboe, Reinisch, Waibel, or Wittich, candidates must in addition complete the joint ‘Seminar in International Law for the presentation of PhD Theses’ (SE380034; see § 5(2)(b) of the Curriculum ) (usually in the second semester of doctoral studies). Candidates can only enrol in the methods lecture and the joint seminar if they have previously obtained the confirmation of willingness to supervise (see 1st step above).

During the seminar, dissertation projects are presented and discussed. After presentation of the exposé (approx. 20 minutes), all seminar participants receive detailed oral feedback on their dissertation projects. The aim of the seminar is to assess whether the chosen topic and the chosen method(s) are suitable for a dissertation. If the assessment is positive, a dissertation agreement will be concluded. A dissertation agreement can also be made conditional on prior changes to the dissertation project. Depending on the scope of the requested changes, candidates will either be asked to submit a revise exposé or to present the project again in the following semester. In principle, the confirmation of willingness to supervise expires if the candidate does not successfully complete the joint dissertation seminar and if a dissertation agreement is not concluded within two semesters of admission to the doctoral programme. The joint seminar is held each semester as a block seminar on one or two days towards the end of the semester (i.e. in December in the winter semester, and in May/June in the summer semester; the dates can be found in the course catalogue). The registration period ends in the first week of the semester. Presence at the preliminary meeting at the beginning of the semester and during the entire block seminar towards the end of the semester is obligatory. Exceptions require the written confirmation of a doctor or employer. In exceptional cases, participation in the dissertation seminar can take place via video conference.

At least one month before the block seminar, the following documents must be sent via Moodle. A plagiarism check will be carried out.

  • Title page with topic and name
  • Preliminary table of contents of the dissertation
  • Exposé (5,000-7,000 words, with footnotes) about the dissertation project. In particular, this should contain the research questions, description of the issue, method to be applied and current state of research on the topic.
  • Bibliography (around 3 pages)

Incomplete, underdeveloped and overlong exposés will be rejected and can only be submitted after revision in the following semester.

After the conclusion of a dissertation agreement, the dissertation topic can be registered and the written exposé can be uploaded to the faculty's homepage to meet the requirement of a public presentation.

How to apply at the University of Vienna: Frequently Asked Questions

We strongly encourage you to READ the entire blog post and follow the suggested links. We cannot offer any individual assistance via the comment thread or other social media outlets. ALL information you need on how to apply can be found in the blog post and on the website Studying at the University of Vienna .

Update: November 2023

How to get started – studying a bachelor/diploma or master programme

“ I would like to study at your university. How can I apply? ” This is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive on Facebook or Instagram .

It is not easy to give a concrete answer, as this depends on various factors such as your citizenship, the issuing country of your secondary-school leaving certificate/degree and the degree programme you are interested in.

Keep in mind that the processing of international applications takes several weeks. Unfortunately, this often collides with the duration of visa applications, which may result in missed deadlines . We therefore recommend applying at the beginning of the application period . The application period depends on your citizenship. So inform yourself early on, which application period applies to you.

An ideal starting point is the website Studying at the University of Vienna , where most questions regarding the application and admission procedure for bachelor/diploma and master programmes at the University of Vienna are answered.

To make things easier for you, we have collected FAQs of international applicants who are interested in studying at the University of Vienna. Here, an additional 5 step guide to applying at the university can be found.

1. Which degree programmes can I study at the University of Vienna?

Five students sit around a table and are happily working on a project together.

Are you interested in a bachelor/diploma or master programme? You can find an overview of all bachelor/diploma and master programmes offered at the University of Vienna as well as detailed information regarding the individual degree programmes on the website Studying at the University of Vienna .

Note: The University of Vienna does not offer any medical programmes (Medicine, Dentistry). These are offered at the Medical University of Vienna .

2. How do I apply for a specific programme?

Information on how to apply:

  • for bachelor/diploma programmes
  • for master programmes

Follow the respective link for the programme you are interested in. There you’ll find information on the required documents, deadlines and steps in the application and admission procedure. These depend, among other things, on the issuing country of your secondary-school leaving certificate (for admission to bachelor/diploma programmes) and where you completed your previous degree programme (for admission to master programmes).

Do not work with agencies offering to process your application! Agencies are not permitted to apply on behalf of students according to § 60 para 6 Universities Act 2002 . Applications submitted by agencies will be rejected without exception. The University of Vienna does not have any cooperation agreements (except for exchange programmes such as Erasmus+). If you are interested in studying at the University of Vienna, you have to apply for admission yourself. Our online application process is very easy – you can find step-by-step instructions on the website Studying at the University of Vienna . If you apply for admission as a non-EU/EEA citizen or without EU/EEA secondary school-leaving certificate/higher education degree, you will receive a “Zulassungsbescheid” (admission letter). With this document, you can apply for a student visa. Please consult the responsible Austrian representation (embassy/consulate) to find out if you have to meet any further requirements.

Please keep in mind that the number of study places is limited for some degree programmes. Therefore, an entrance exam procedure or selection procedure is conducted for these degree programmes. You can only be admitted to degree programmes with entrance exam/selection procedure in the summer semester if you have already successfully participated in the entrance exam/selection procedure for this academic year. The application period for the next academic year will be announced on our website:

  • bachelor/diploma programmes with entrance exam procedure
  • master programmes with selection procedure

After reading the information on the website, your head is spinning and you still have questions about the admission procedure? There’s a simple solution! Come to Let’s Talk from April to June and talk to experts from our Admissions team on site. Read the information about Let’s Talk and book an appointment . .

3. Do I need to be able to speak German if I want to study at the University of Vienna?

Bachelor programmes.

The language of instruction for all bachelor/diploma programmes at the University of Vienna is German, even if individual courses are instructed (partly) in another language. Therefore, you already need a proof of German language proficiency at level A2 or higher to apply for admission. You can only attend a German course at the University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities if you already have a proof of German language proficiency at level A2. For admission to the degree programme, you need a proof of German language proficiency at level C1 .

The bachelor programme in International Legal Studies is instructed in German and English. Therefore, you have to submit a proof of German language proficiency of at least level A2, as well as a proof of English language proficiency at level B2 or higher in your application.

Read this blog post with the most important facts about the proof of German knowledge carefully.

Master programmes

Some master programmes are instructed in English . For these programmes, you do not need to provide a proof of German language proficiency. However, for some of them you might need to participate in a selection procedure . For multilingual master programmes (taught in German and English/other languages) a proof of German language proficiency is also required.

4. How much is the tuition fee?

The amount of the tuition fee depends on your citizenship. In addition to the tuition fee, you also have to pay the Students’ Union fee (22,70 Euro per semester for the academic year 2023/24).

  • Detailed information regarding the amount and payment of the tuition fee

The website Studying at the University of Vienna provides detailed information regarding financial matters such as discounts, allowances and scholarships for students of the University of Vienna. Further information regarding all scholarships and research grants offered in Austria is available in the database of the OeAD – Austria’s Agency for Education and Internationalisation .

5. How can I finance my studies in Vienna/Austria?

Dear Sir/Madam. I’m Yessica from Indonesia. I really want to study in University of Vienna. I want to apply for International Marketing in English. Can I get the scholarship for this programme? And, How to apply? Thank you

Dear Yessica, most of the information you’re looking for is in the blogpost above. Please read it carefully and follow the suggested links. If you still have any questions, please contact student point directly.

The process of admission is really complicated, especially for non-EU citizens. Smells like a dicrimination. I have EU diploma, but that`s not the case. Too many question that are not answered in website and no one will answer in StudentPoint. Especially about non-degree programs. No one gives precise answer. One says deadline for erstanmeldung is 2 March, someone says January, other says November. I don`t understand. And also what to do for people who don`t know German? I love this university. But, you don`t care about anyone, except students from German speaking countries.

Dear Georgiy, we’re sorry you see things like this. Fact is, the admission for non EU citizens is a bureaucratic effort due to legal reasons. Most of the study programmes are taught in German, so German proficiency at level B2 is required according to the CEFR. (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) Regarding your question about deadline and term dates, read here more: http://studentpoint.univie.ac.at/en/studying/term-dates/the-academic-year/ If you read this blogpost carefully and follow the links you’ll find very useful information for your admission to the University of Vienna. For your specific questions please contact Student Point.

hi kindly tell me about part time job in Austria

Hi Ali, we can’t help you in this matter. You will have to do your own research, this is a blogpost about how to register at the University of Vienna.

My name is Abbos. I am from Uzbekistan. I am studying undergraduate degree in Economics with Finance at Westminster International University in Tashkent. I will graduate from this university next year 2016. I am interested in studying my graduate degree in Europe, especially in your country. I have heard many positive opinions about universities in Austria. However, living expenses might be high in Austria. What are the requirements for the Masters programs in University of Vienna? Do you require GMAT, or GRE results? The most important question is, Can I apply for 2016/2017 academic year for Masters Degree now? Because though I am graduating I am not holding graduate diploma yet. I may get it in October. University may provide proof letter or certificate alternatively at the moment.

I will look forward hearing from you, Sincerely, Abbos

Hello Abbos, the requirements depend on the master programme you’re interested in. Here you can check all master programmes: http://studentpoint.univie.ac.at/en/application/admission-master-programmes/ Normally you’ll need proficiency in German and there are study programmes where you also need proficiency in English. Hello, I applied for an English taught masters program for summer Semester 2016. My application was received on the 7th of December 2015. I would like to know when I am expected to get the admission letter from the school, bearing in mind that the visa process for non European students takes about 2-6 months. I am concerned because if summer Semester starts on the 1st of March 2016, then there’s the possibility of getting the study permit late, which means one might not be able to make it in time for commencement of studies. Please, I would appreciate an elaborate explanation on this issue in order to to allay my fears. Thanks.

Please refer directly to the department to which you sent your application. We hope you can understand that we cannot answer specific questions via this blog forum. The responsible staff is located at the admissions office.

I am studying German, but I still need more courses to reach the required level. Is there a possibility to have a conditional acceptance; I complete language study in Austria first, then I start the Master or the research in university. Thank you in advance Best regards

Dear Sir or Madam,

This is to request more information about your course for a Non-degree students and Studienberechtigungsprüfung exams.

First of all I am a student from Poland and recently I’ve finished my second class in high school(Poland),currently I am doing pre-access to HE course in City of Liverpool College and my GCSE exam in May/June. I do not have a school leaving certificate and matura exam, but I am interested in applying to study as a non-degree student in this year(University Preparation Programme-German course). After this course I would like to be admitted for a degree program, but I have read on your website that I can only be admitted with documents like:

-school leaving certificate

-diploma of a university programme

-the Austrian Berufsreifeprüfung

-the Austrian Externistenprüfung

-the Austrian Studienberechtigungsprüfung.

My question is what are the conditions to pass Berufsreifeprüfung,Externisten,or Studienberechtigung. Can I start this after my German course?

I have always been dreaming about leaving in Vienna and studying in such a reputable University as UW.

I would be grateful if you would send me more information, I look forward to receiving your response.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Paulina, we already answered your questions via Facebook Messages. Please read the blog post carefully. For specific questions please contact our Student Point: http://bit.ly/StudentPointEN

The Department of Communication at the University of Vienna in cooperation with the Center for Doctoral Studies offers the possibility of conducting a PhD in Communication Science as part of the Doctoral Program in Social Sciences. A doctoral thesis is an original piece of research of substantial length that makes a genuine contribution to human knowledge and sciences. It is therefore significantly different to a Master thesis and much more demanding.

The program is open to research which explores diverse contents, processes, effects, contexts and systematic research questions within the area of communication and media.

The Center for Doctoral Studies at the University of Vienna offers potential doctoral students a structured overview of the requirements as well as the curriculum online. Information on admission for graduates of universities other than the University of Vienna can be found on the website of Teaching Affairs and Student Services .

Starting October 1, 2020, the Vienna Doctoral School of Social Sciences was established. ViDSS aims to promote innovative, excellent and problem-oriented research.

For the doctoral research field "Communication", the following is the doctoral advisory board.

  • Assoz. Prof. Mag. Dr. Florian Arendt
  • Univ.-Prof. Dr. Sabine Einwiller
  • Univ.-Prof. Folker Hanusch, PhD
  • ao. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Fritz Hausjell
  • Univ.-Prof. Dr. Sophie Lecheler (Director of Studies)
  • Univ.-Prof. Dr. Jörg Matthes
  • Univ.-Prof. Dr. Katharine Sarikakis
  • Univ.-Prof. Dr. Annie Waldherr
  • Ass.-Prof. Dr. Claudia Wilhelm, M.A.

When searching for a supervisor for their doctoral thesis, interested students are advised to read through the academic/research profiles of available professors and habilitated scientific researchers with habilitation respectively. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to direct your questions to the Center for Doctoral Studies.

In order to gain registration approval, prospective students have to write research proposal and present it to a special committee. This presentation is public. Generally two presentations dates are available per semester.

For a successful presentation of your exposé, a close collaboration with your supervisor is essential. Your exposé should:

  • be formulated in a clear way,
  • be well-grounded,
  • be coherent,
  • include leading research question and hypotheses,
  • and focus on the research aim.

Moreover, a clear elaboration on how the method-in-use enables answering the research question is crucial. The presentation takes about 7 to 8 minutes.

Application and Admission to PhD and Doctoral Programmes at the Medical University of Vienna

  • Studies & Further Education
  • Application & Admission
  • PhD and Doctoral Programmes

Unlike the Medicine and Dentistry degree programmes, the Ph.D. and doctoral programmes place specific requirements on applicants.

Requirements for a Ph.D. or Doctorate study

In order to be considered for a Ph.D., you will need to meet our requirements for enrolment:

  • You must hold a relevant degree from a higher education institution. To enter the Ph.D. program, you need to hold one or several degree(s) equivalent to 240 ECTS credits or a similar relevant four-year+ degree. The four years of higher education may take the form of a Bachelor Hons degree of four+ years or a Bachelor degree of three years and a Master degree of one to two years. Each level of education will be assessed to see if it meets the entry requirements. If you hold a degree other than a European Master's degree, it may be advisable to have your degree assessed by the National Academic Recognition Information Centre (ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA ) before you apply.
  • Excellent communication skills in English are considered essential. Applicants must be able to read, write and speak academic English fluently. English language requirements are comparable to a minimum of level 2B. More details about the language requirements can be found here .
  • Before you can enrol in our Ph.D. program, you must come to an agreement with one of our faculties to support your Ph.D. training. For further information on our Ph.D. Calls and open Ph.D. positions , please click on the link.

Research or programming experience in the field you are applying for is desirable but not essential. However, our experience in the past has been that applicants with research experience have a better chance of success.

Ph.D. postion application

The basic requirement for admission to a doctorate at MedUni Vienna is the commitment of a Ph.D. supervisor to support you in your studies.

Supervisors have the possibility to advertise their open Ph.D. positions on our Ph.D. opportunities website or through their own channels. You can apply for these Ph.D. positions only online in our application portal within the application deadline. Open Ph.D. calls will take place twice a year. More information about the online application process and currently open Ph.D. positions can be found here.

If there is currently no online application open in the current Ph.D. call for your preferred Ph.D. program or project, you have the possibility to send an initiative application to your preferred supervisor via email. The contact details of the supervisors can be found on the Ph.D. Supervisor webpage .

Important note: The application for a PhD position is a seperate and independent process from admission. If you have already come to an agreement with a Ph.D. supervisor you only have to enroll for your studies.

Admission procedure for the Ph.D. and Doctorate studies

You can enrol for two study programs at MedUni Vienna:

  • PhD program UN094/UN794620/UN794455
  • Doctoral program of Applied Medical Science UN790

For the registration for all Ph.D. and doctoral programs at the Medical University of Vienna, a prior commitment  by a relevant thesis supervisor is necessary.   It is the student´s responsability to come to an agreement with a thesis supervisor for the doctoral thesis before applying to enrol in a Ph.D. program . Students, who have successfully participated in one of our Ph.D. calls and received an offer from us, do not need to obtain any additional proof of commitment from a supervisor.

The next step is to complete your online PhD and doctoral enrolment application and attach all the necessary documents. The system allows you to check the status of your application at any time.

If all documents have been submitted correctly, you will receive a payment request for the ÖH and/or tuition fees. Once the fees have been paid, you will officially be enrolled for your studies and receive the pin code to activate MedCampus for students and your student ID card.

Late payment of the ÖH and/or the tuition fee will result in exmatriculation and you will have to be readmitted.

After admission, you will be able to book your courses and start your scientific work. At the end of the second semester, please send us your dissertation application, which is also part of the overall grade.

(Online) admission application

For the admission to the Ph.D. program, please register online and submit an application with all required documents to the Admissions Office by the admission periods  deadline.

If you already have an active student or staff account and wish to register for a PhD programme, please use the following link:

Verify this information with your program before selecting an alternative to the TOEFL.

Minimum Requirements for Admission for IU Programs

*All English proficiency exams must be submitted before admissions. Once a student is admitted, English proficiency exams or updated scores will not be accepted.
