How do you choose what topic to research? That’s the single most common question I get asked, probably because selecting a topic is such a daunting prospect. In this post, I’ll take a personal look at how I select topics for security research. As a case study, I’ll use my latest research, which will be presented at Black Hat USA and DEF CON this August:

The hardest part

Before we start, I should mention that I firmly believe that choosing a topic is not the hardest part of web security research.

I’ve spoken to so many people who have cool ideas but never attempt to execute them. On the rare occasion that someone does mention a research idea that I think is doomed from the outset, it’s clear that attempting it will still provide them with a major learning experience - hardly a terrible outcome.

In fact, I don’t think that coming up with research ideas is the hard part either. Once you start researching, you’ll likely find every topic you explore leaves you with ideas for three more projects.

I think the hardest part of research is knowing when to bail, and when to push on.

Fast failure

My primary criteria when I evaluate a topic is how much time I’ll need to invest before I have enough information to decide whether to abandon it or continue. Knowing when to abandon a topic and when to push on is an extremely valuable skill for research, and it’s worth putting thought into this before starting.

This year, the attack-concept I wanted to explore initially looked like it required a major up-front time investment. However, I identified a short-cut - if I could build a test website that was vulnerable and reasonably realistic, that would prove the concept was pursuing. I built the website, quickly discovered that the attack concept was extremely unrealistic, and quickly pivoted to a different concept.

The second concept showed just enough promise to make me waste six weeks on it before it flopped too. When looking for a third concept, race conditions was an attractive topic because I already had powerful tooling from the prior project. This meant it would only take about a day to adapt the tooling, and a week or two of manual testing to see if I could discover something significant in the wild. I found a novel high-impact vulnerability in under a week, which cemented my commitment to the topic.

The fear factor

I like to research topics I’m scared of. Fear is a great indicator of something I don’t fully understand, and challenges that I don’t know how to tackle. Race conditions provided this in buckets, and I place this up-front and center in my abstract:

Direct impact vs audience impact

As a security professional, it’s tempting to rate a research project’s impact based on the direct impact. For example, over the years I’ve seen a range of serious flaws in a certain popular CDN, and I suspect that if I directly targeted it, I could find multiple ways to take over all their customers’ websites - a reasonable chunk of the web. In terms of direct impact, this would be pretty good.

But when you submit to Black Hat, they ask you to specify ‘three actionable take-aways’ for the audience. How would my hypothetical CDN-popping talk answer this? The only action required would be from that sole CDN vendor - in effect I’d just be giving a war-story talk. These can be entertaining and inspiring, but that’s not what I’m aiming for.

I try to pick a topic where the audience will take away novel attack techniques, and any tools or methodology required to make them practical to apply.

Applicable audience

Over the last five years, my research has been focused on HTTP Request Smuggling and Web Cache Poisoning . Since I’m well-versed in this topic, doing further research directly on top has become relatively easy, and I’m perpetually aware of multiple promising ideas.

However, while creating the presentation for last year’s Browser-Powered Desync Attacks , I became acutely aware that it demanded an exceptional amount of prior technical knowledge from the audience.

Building on a little recent research often works well because you can summarise it yourself. However, building on a large volume of recent research means that anyone in the audience who isn’t already familiar is going to struggle, and overall less people will get the benefit.

This year, by focusing on race conditions - a topic with minimal recent developments - I’ve been able to start building on a foundation that most attendees will be familiar with. Relative to last year’s talk, you can expect this talk to have both greater potential for the experts, and greater accessibility for the masses.

Existing skill-sets vs personal development

There’s a second, more personal reason why I changed my research focus away from request smuggling. I expect request smuggling to keep yielding good research for years to come, but just like any topic, at some point it’ll dry up. If I maintain my exclusive focus on this topic, there’s a risk I’ll become over-specialised and end up in a bad place when the topic stops yielding fruit.

I deliberately choose race conditions to avoid this over-specialisation risk, even though I regarded it as a much riskier bet than doing even more request smuggling exploration. Personal development is a huge and easily overlooked part of research. I rarely repeat my presentations across months for the same reason - if you spend your time sharing the same presentation over and over, you’re sacrificing novel research time.

That said, there’s a balance to be had here - if you have specialist knowledge, that will give you an edge on certain topics. Race conditions appealed from the start because I’d observed low-level HTTP quirks that could enhance these attacks, and I’d also observed them in the wild when trying to exploit response queue poisoning.

No topic is perfect; this presentation has fewer case studies than usual for me because fully automated detection of these vulnerabilities is not practical. On the plus side, this leaves a large number of vulnerabilities on the table that the audience can find simply by applying the methodology.

A comprehensive investigation of clustering algorithms for User and Entity Behavior Analytics Provisionally Accepted

Government agencies are now encouraging industries to enhance their security systems to detect and respond proactively to cybersecurity incidents. Consequently, equipping with a security operation center that combines the analytical capabilities of human experts with systems based on Machine Learning (ML) plays a critical role. In this setting, Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) platforms can effectively handle network-related events to trigger cybersecurity alerts. Furthermore, a SIEM may include a User and Entity Behavior Analytics (UEBA) engine that examines the behavior of both users and devices, or entities, within a corporate network. In recent literature, several contributions have employed ML algorithms for UEBA, especially those based on the unsupervised learning paradigm, because anomalous behaviors are usually not known in advance. However, to shorten the gap between research advances and practice, it is necessary to comprehensively analyze the effectiveness of these methodologies. This paper proposes a thorough investigation of traditional and emerging clustering algorithms for UEBA, considering multiple application contexts, i.e., different user-entity interaction scenarios. Our study involves three datasets sourced from the existing literature and fifteen clustering algorithms. Among the compared techniques, HDBSCAN and DenMune showed promising performance on the state-of-the-art CERT behavior-related dataset, producing groups with a density very close to the number of users.

#1: Figure Out Your Thesis Early

Before you start writing a single word of your paper, you first need to know what your thesis will be. Your thesis is a statement that explains what you intend to prove/show in your paper. Every sentence in your research paper will relate back to your thesis, so you don't want to start writing without it!

As some examples, if you're writing a research paper on if students learn better in same-sex classrooms, your thesis might be "Research has shown that elementary-age students in same-sex classrooms score higher on standardized tests and report feeling more comfortable in the classroom."

If you're writing a paper on the causes of the Civil War, your thesis might be "While the dispute between the North and South over slavery is the most well-known cause of the Civil War, other key causes include differences in the economies of the North and South, states' rights, and territorial expansion."

#2: Back Every Statement Up With Research

Remember, this is a research paper you're writing, so you'll need to use lots of research to make your points. Every statement you give must be backed up with research, properly cited the way your teacher requested. You're allowed to include opinions of your own, but they must also be supported by the research you give.

#3: Do Your Research Before You Begin Writing

You don't want to start writing your research paper and then learn that there isn't enough research to back up the points you're making, or, even worse, that the research contradicts the points you're trying to make!

Meeting Time: 09:45 AM‑11:00 AM TTh  Instructor: Ali Anwar Course Description: Cloud computing serves many large-scale applications ranging from search engines like Google to social networking websites like Facebook to online stores like Amazon. More recently, cloud computing has emerged as an essential technology to enable emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and Machine Learning. The exponential growth of data availability and demands for security and speed has made the cloud computing paradigm necessary for reliable, financially economical, and scalable computation. The dynamicity and flexibility of Cloud computing have opened up many new forms of deploying applications on infrastructure that cloud service providers offer, such as renting of computation resources and serverless computing.    This course will cover the fundamentals of cloud services management and cloud software development, including but not limited to design patterns, application programming interfaces, and underlying middleware technologies. More specifically, we will cover the topics of cloud computing service models, data centers resource management, task scheduling, resource virtualization, SLAs, cloud security, software defined networks and storage, cloud storage, and programming models. We will also discuss data center design and management strategies, which enable the economic and technological benefits of cloud computing. Lastly, we will study cloud storage concepts like data distribution, durability, consistency, and redundancy. Machine learning for healthcare: concepts and applications.

Meeting Time: 11:15 AM‑12:30 PM TTh  Instructor: Yogatheesan Varatharajah Course Description: Machine Learning is transforming healthcare. This course will introduce students to a range of healthcare problems that can be tackled using machine learning, different health data modalities, relevant machine learning paradigms, and the unique challenges presented by healthcare applications. Applications we will cover include risk stratification, disease progression modeling, precision medicine, diagnosis, prognosis, subtype discovery, and improving clinical workflows. We will also cover research topics such as explainability, causality, trust, robustness, and fairness.

Visualization with AI

Meeting Time: 04:00 PM‑05:15 PM TTh  Instructor: Qianwen Wang Course Description: This course aims to investigate how visualization techniques and AI technologies work together to enhance understanding, insights, or outcomes.

This is a seminar style course consisting of lectures, paper presentation, and interactive discussion of the selected papers. Students will also work on a group project where they propose a research idea, survey related studies, and present initial results.

This course will cover the application of visualization to better understand AI models and data, and the use of AI to improve visualization processes. Readings for the course cover papers from the top venues of AI, Visualization, and HCI, topics including AI explainability, reliability, and Human-AI collaboration.    This course is designed for PhD students, Masters students, and advanced undergraduates who want to dig into research.

Although the class is primarily intended for PhD students, motivated juniors/seniors and MS students who are interested in this topic are welcome to apply, ensuring they detail their qualifications for the course.

Visualizations for Intelligent AR Systems

Meeting Time: 04:00 PM‑05:15 PM MW  Instructor: Zhu-Tian Chen Course Description: This course aims to explore the role of Data Visualization as a pivotal interface for enhancing human-data and human-AI interactions within Augmented Reality (AR) systems, thereby transforming a broad spectrum of activities in both professional and daily contexts. Structured as a seminar, the course consists of two main components: the theoretical and conceptual foundations delivered through lectures, paper readings, and discussions; and the hands-on experience gained through small assignments and group projects. This class is designed to be highly interactive, and AR devices will be provided to facilitate hands-on learning.    Participants will have the opportunity to experience AR systems, develop cutting-edge AR interfaces, explore AI integration, and apply human-centric design principles. The course is designed to advance students' technical skills in AR and AI, as well as their understanding of how these technologies can be leveraged to enrich human experiences across various domains. Students will be encouraged to create innovative projects with the potential for submission to research conferences.

Students are expected to have a solid foundation in either data visualization, computer graphics, computer vision, or HCI. Having expertise in all would be perfect! However, a robust interest and eagerness to delve into these subjects can be equally valuable, even though it means you need to learn some basic concepts independently.

Sustainable Computing: A Systems View

Meeting Time: 09:45 AM‑11:00 AM  Instructor: Abhishek Chandra Course Description: In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the pervasiveness, scale, and distribution of computing infrastructure: ranging from cloud, HPC systems, and data centers to edge computing and pervasive computing in the form of micro-data centers, mobile phones, sensors, and IoT devices embedded in the environment around us. The growing amount of computing, storage, and networking demand leads to increased energy usage, carbon emissions, and natural resource consumption. To reduce their environmental impact, there is a growing need to make computing systems sustainable. In this course, we will examine sustainable computing from a systems perspective. We will examine a number of questions:   • How can we design and build sustainable computing systems?   • How can we manage resources efficiently?   • What system software and algorithms can reduce computational needs?    Topics of interest would include:   • Sustainable system design and architectures   • Sustainability-aware systems software and management   • Sustainability in large-scale distributed computing (clouds, data centers, HPC)   • Sustainability in dispersed computing (edge, mobile computing, sensors/IoT)

Registration Prerequisites: This course is targeted towards students with a strong interest in computer systems (Operating Systems, Distributed Systems, Networking, Databases, etc.). Background in Operating Systems (Equivalent of CSCI 5103) and basic understanding of Computer Networking (Equivalent of CSCI 4211) is required.

This paper aims to answer the burning question of how food markets help the food sovereignty in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The paper divulges into topics concerning food security by focusing on primary and secondary data sources. These were collected through online portals. An in-depth analysis was conducted on Water–Energy–Food nexus and food sovereignty in the UAE. The UAE’s biggest challenge due to its environment and geography is agriculture, and this forms the main discussion of this paper. The country's strong diplomatic contacts have facilitated several options for importing food. Engaging in research and development to assess new local food sources will decrease reliance on imported goods. The National Food Security Strategy 2051 is designed to address this situation, and everyone must contribute to its goals.

Gokul Iyer, Others From PNNL, Honored for Climate Paper

The paper, published in Science, examined nations’ pledges to prevent global warming

PNNL research scientist Gokul Iyer was co-lead author of a paper published in Science that has been honored with a Frontiers Planet Prize award.

Gokul Iyer, a research scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), was co-lead author of a paper that was named National Champion of China within the Frontiers Planet Prize . Yang Ou, a former PNNL scientist, was the lead author of the paper. The global competition affiliated with the International Science Council seeks scientific solutions to stabilize the planet’s ecosystem and supports the scaling-up of the most promising strategies. The paper assessed the impact of pledges of more than 100 nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The award and winners were announced April 22 to coincide with Earth Day. The paper was published in November 2021 in Science , “Can updated climate pledges limit warming well below 2°C?”

Iyer is an Earth scientist and team leader at the Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI), a partnership between PNNL and the University of Maryland. Iyer and other JGCRI scientists explore interactions between human and Earth systems so decision makers can make informed choices about a wide range of challenges, from decarbonization strategies to meeting emissions goals. 

The study found that the revised and new commitments made by nations in 2021 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions could chart a course where limiting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius and under within this century is now significantly more likely. However, limiting warming to 1.5 degrees—the aspirational goal of the Paris Agreement—remains out of reach. The original pledges were made as part of the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Ou , now an assistant professor at Peking University, was the paper’s lead author. Haewon McJeon, the paper’s corresponding author, is on leave from PNNL while working as a visiting professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. Current PNNL scientists Jae Edmonds , Matthew Binsted , Pralit Patel , and Stephanie Waldhoff  contributed to this influential study. Allen Fawcett ,   who was formerly at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and is now JGCRI’s Division Director, also contributed to the study. Other contributors include Sha Yu, a former PNNL scientist, and Nathan Hultman and Ryna Cui from the University of Maryland and PNNL joint appointees, along with researchers from other national and international organizations.

“This recognition is a demonstration of the global impact of JGCRI’s strong capabilities in multisector, human-Earth system modeling,” said Iyer. Iyer and a similar team of authors have published a series of high-impact papers on this and related topics since 2015 (see for example, this and this ). Iyer and team also wrote a commentary in 2023 that outlines three areas that countries could prioritize to further increase the chances of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees.

Ou initiated the application that led to final selection by the Jury of 100 of the Frontiers Planet Prize committee. Ou received the endorsement from a host institute—Peking University—and an official recommendation by the China Geophysical Society. The paper is now among several that are being considered for an International Champions prize, also presented by the Frontiers Planet Prize committee.

The national champions prizes will be formally presented at an awards ceremony taking place June 25–28 in Villars-sur-Ollon, Switzerland.
