Purpose The main purpose of this study is to offer a critical review of studies of scientific progress of strategic management (SM) research in the hospitality and tourism field (H&T). Design/methodology/approach This study was conducted through a critical literature review based on three dimensions: intellectual, conceptual and social structures of SM research. Findings The boundaries of SM under the three dimensions (intellectual, conceptual and social structure) are addressed. Based on these three components, SM in hospitality and tourism realm shows a discursive structure. There are few studies assessing the evolution of SM research in the H&T industry. However, all of these studies are review papers that explored the boundaries of SM research in H&T by using limited keywords to find SM papers, and generally considered papers which are published in a few leading H&T journals. Research limitations/implications This study focused on only H&T journals to elaborate the boundaries of...

Purpose: Despite the significance of innovation observed for the survival and growth of hospitality industry there is no comprehensive research in this area, the purpose of this study is to represent a review of literature around the hospitality innovation. This paper also aims to identify the effective firm specific innovative strategy for the survival and growth of the hospitality industry and highlight the future research direction in this area. Methodology/Approach: Systematic Literature Review method is adopted in the present study. Keywords searches were performed in the Google Scholar database using “Hospitality Innovation” OR “Hotel Innovation” OR “Innovation” AND “Service Innovation”. Last two decades were taken as the time frame where last time study was conducted in April 2022. Findings: Existing literature shows that till now research is scarce in the hospitality innovation. Product, process, organizational and marketing innovations as well as firm specific radical or incremental innovation will be essential as survival strategy for the hospitality industry in future. Use of innovation as a competitive strategy in the hospitality industry is still found to be unexplored. Originality/Value: This paper reviews literature of almost two decades on hospitality innovation and aims to shed light on a very ignored yet potential strategy of hospitality industry. This paper will be useful to hospitality professionals, researchers, and academicians.

Strategic planning remains one of the most popular management tools, but theoretical and empirical developments in the academic literature have been a slow burn. This paper addresses this gap and provides an up-to-date review of hospitality and tourism strategic planning research. We review strategic planning research from 1995 to 2013 in seven leading tourism academic journals, and adopt a modern and broad conceptualization of strategic planning. While there is some awareness of effective tourism strategic planning processes, academic research has not kept pace with practice. To stimulate a resurgence of research interest, we provide future research directions. We observe a methodological introspection and present some new research methodologies, which are critically important in researching the turbulent, chaotic and nonlinear tourism environment.
