The problem-solving song.
The History Of The Addams Family Theme Song Explained
Here's a thought experiment: sing to yourself the first line of the theme song to the TV series "Friends." Now, after you finish singing, "So no one told you life was gonna be this way," gauge just how hard it is to avoid making those four clapping sounds that come right after. Now, hum the first four notes of the theme song to "The Addams Family," and gauge how hard it is to avoid making those two snapping sounds with your fingers.
Those two snaps would be the "hook" for one of the most memorable TV theme songs of its era, if not of any era. "The Addams Family" opening credits lean into those snaps, showing the characters, often in close-up, snapping their fingers when the time comes. According to NPR News , those two snaps also made their composer, Vic Mizzy, a tremendous amount of money — enough to buy a house in a wealthy LA suburb, as Mizzy would often joke.
Expository Theme Songs
They're all but gone these days, according to TV Tropes , but there was a time when the expository theme song ruled the day (in fact, the TV theme song in general has mostly disappeared, but that's a discussion for another day). Shows such as "Gilligan's Island," "The Beverly Hillbillies," and "Green Acres," among countless others, had theme songs that introduced the characters and the setting and explained their motivations.
If any TV show needed exposition, it would be "The Addams Family." When the show was being developed for the small screen back in the early 1960s, giving the characters some context — and names (they weren't named in the original cartoons) — was paramount to getting viewers to accept them, considering that they'd previously only existed as nameless cartoon characters. And the man who stepped up was Victor Mizzy, who later developed more theme-song cred for composing the theme to "Green Acres," as well as a few radio-friendly commercial hits, such as "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time."
'They're Creepy and They're Kooky'
In the book, "TV's Biggest Hits: The Story of Television Themes From 'Dragnet' to 'Friends,'" excerpted via The Los Angeles Times , author Jon Burlingame notes that composing and recording the theme song for "The Addams Family" brought with it some requirements that are absent from other such theme songs. In particular, the snaps: While the cast of, say, "Gilligan's Island," had absolutely nothing to do with the theme song (they didn't write it or perform it), the cast of "The Addams Family" are particularly involved in their own theme song. Specifically, seven key actors, one of whom was a little girl, had to snap their fingers in time with the song. Further, Mizzy himself sang the song.
The use of the harpsichord was a nice touch. Specifically, it ties a show prop — the instrument that Lurch plays — to the theme song. "You've got the harpsichord, which lends this antique, sort of macabre quality to the theme. But then you add the lyrics, which make it funny. So you have the perfect combination of macabre and amusing. It was just right for that show's sensibility," Mizzy said.
Mizzy made all of the money from the theme song, too. He retained the publishing rights, which meant decades of royalties. "That's why I'm living in Bel-Air: Two finger snaps and you live in Bel-Air," he said, via the Los Angeles Times.

Who wrote the addams family theme song: origins explained.
The golden age of television theme songs is over and yet some like The Addams Family live on as part of popular culture. Here's who wrote the theme.
Audiences are well-acquainted with the kooky, ooky Addams family but few may know the history and origins of the classic The Addams Family theme song. The Addams family returned once again in MGM’s The Addams Family 2 , which arrived in time to join the Halloween horror movies of 2021 . This film will mark the twelfth appearance of the famed family in film and television. Moreover, the animated adventure will once again feature the franchise’s famous theme song. The now instantly recognizable theme has accompanied the creepy clan in nearly all their on-screen appearances.
Interestingly, the history of The Addams Family theme song runs parallel with the family itself. At the same time the song was in development, Charles Addams’s original cartoon characters were receiving their iconic names for the first time ahead of the 1964 Addams Family television series. Prior to the show, the characters were never provided names and had appeared in illustrations within the pages of The New Yorker . Charles Addams first introduced the Addams family in 1938 so, therefore , the theme was instrumental in introducing audiences to the spooky new television family.

Regrettably, while audiences remember the cult series, which ran for two seasons and spawned Addams Family films and series , few know the true origins and history of the theme song. The theme's creator Victor Mizzy was a talented and popular lyricist and composer in the 1950s and 1960s, and his career dated back to the 1930s when he first began writing music for radio which included hits like “My Dreams are Getting Better All the Time” and “I’ll Never Fail You.” Mizzy’s songs would go on to be performed by Doris Day, Dean Martin, and Billie Holiday. However, Mizzy is most recognized for his contributions to film and television with his theme songs for Green Acres and The Addams Family .
Though many of Mizzy’s prior works were upbeat, The Addams Family theme became his most memorable song, and he often joked all it took was two snaps to buy a house in Beverly Hills. Obviously, Mizzy was referring to the snaps which accompanied the harpsichord dominated television theme song . In fact, after Mizzy was approached to do the television series’ theme, he was ultimately urged to direct the intro and opening credits too. He also arranged the position of each Addams family cast member and their individual snaps.
While Mizzy’s Addams Family theme song was popular enough to warrant release as a single, it surprisingly failed to make national charts despite being so catchy. Astonishingly, having developed the theme on his own, Mizzy was able to maintain the publishing rights and received royalties whenever the song was used whether in movies or even live sporting events. Despite “theme songs” often being considered outdated, Vic Mizzy’s theme song for The Addams Family and its history will likely remain a staple of American pop culture. Audiences will have to wait and see if Tim Burton’s Wednesday makes use of the iconic song when it hits Netflix sometime next year - though it feels like a safe bet.

The Platform For Theme Songs And Lyrics
The Addams Family Theme Song And Lyrics
The Addams Family theme song, simply titled “The Addams Family Theme,” is an instantly recognizable and iconic tune that has become synonymous with the beloved tele series . It first accompanied the show’s debut episode on 1 October 1965 in the UK.
The theme song, composed by the talented Vic Mizzy, perfectly captures the quirky and macabre essence of the Addams Family . Its catchy and playful melody, combined with the signature finger-snapping beat, sets the tone for each episode, inviting viewers into the delightfully eccentric world of Gomez, Morticia, and their unconventional family.
Created by Charles Addams and David Levy, the Addams Family series was based on Charles Addams’ original comic strip. Under the executive production of David Levy, the show aired for two seasons, consisting of 64 episodes. It found its home on the ABC network, captivating audiences with its dark humor, gothic aesthetic, and endearing portrayal of the Addams Family’s unique dynamics.
While the final episode of the original series aired on 30 October 1977, the Addams Family theme song continues to be beloved by fans worldwide. Its timeless appeal and ability to evoke nostalgia are a testament to the enduring popularity of the show and the creative genius of Vic Mizzy’s composition.
Whether it’s the catchy snapping fingers or the familiar lyrics that invite us to “do the Addams Family,” the theme song remains an integral part of the Addams Family legacy, forever associated with the charm and eccentricity of this beloved fictional family.

Who Wrote and Sang the ‘Spooky’ Theme Song for ‘The Addams Family’
by Tina Benitez-Eves March 4, 2023, 10:52 am
Cartoonist Charles Addams’ creepy cartoons of a macabre family, The Addams Family , which he first drew as a freelancer for The New Yorker in 1938, became a hit over time. His humorous and spooky family of fiends would later get adapted into a popular television series in the 1960s starring John Astin as Gomez Addams, Carolyn Jones as his wife, Morticia, Lisa Loring as their daughter Wednesday, and Jackie Coogan as Uncle Fester, along with more ghoulish characters.

The show needed a theme song that would reflect all the eerie shenanigans and comedic side of The Addams Family.
[RELATED: Who Wrote ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’ Theme Song?]
By the time the show premiered in 1964, the theme song for The Addams Family was already written and arranged by Brooklyn, New York-born TV and film composer Victor Mizzy. He already had the iconic melody in his head, complete with harpsichord, percussion, and two-finger snaps.
“You’ve got the harpsichord, which lends this antique, sort of macabre quality to the theme,” said Jon Burlingame , author of the 1996 book TV’s Biggest Hits: The Story of Television Themes From ‘Dragnet’ to ‘Friends. “But then you add the lyrics, which make it funny. So you have the perfect combination of macabre and amusing. It was just right for that show’s sensibility.”
And then came the lyrics. Knowing the theme of the show, Mizzy wrote lyrics that were funny and slightly spine-tingling. He even sang the theme song himself and overdubbed it three times to give the impression of multiple vocalists since the production studio, Filmways, didn’t want to pay for singers.

Opening Scenes
In addition to composing the music, writing lyrics, and singing the song, Mizzy also directed and filmed the opening sequence for the show.
“Now here’s my idea,” said Mizzy in 2004 , before starting to sing the melody to The Addams Family . “Buh-buh-buh-bump [snap-snap], buh-buh-buh-bump.’ As Mizzy was presenting his theme song, he noticed smiles on the faces of producer David Levy and others in the room. “I said, ‘My idea is to iris in like an old-time movie, and the family.”
To capture his arrangement, Mizzy directed the cast through the song—and the finger snaps.
“I told Carolyn [Jones] and John [Astin], to be lackadaisical,” said Mizzy. “That did it. Overnight, it becomes a smash show—big.”

‘Green Acres’ and Beyond
Born on Jan. 9, 1916, in Brooklyn, New York, Mizzy learned to play the piano as a child and began writing songs and sketches for variety shows while he was studying at New York University.
He eventually began working as a songwriter, penning a number of top 20 songs in the 1930s and ’40s, including “There’s a Faraway Look in Your Eye” and “Pretty Kitty Blue Eyes,” before venturing into television and first composing the music for the 1960 anthology series Moment of Fear.
By 1964, he had written for The Addams Family , which ran through 1966. In 1965, Mizzy also composed another iconic theme song for the television sitcom Green Acres , starring Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor, which aired through 1971.
Mizzy, who died in 2009 at 93, continued composing music for TV and film, including a song for the DVD version of the 2004 film Spider-Man 2 .
Addams Adaptations
Throughout the decades, The Addams Family has been recreated in film, beginning with the 1991 movie, starring Angelica Houston as Morticia, the late Raul Julia as Gomez, Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester, and Christina Ricci as Wednesday.
A computer-animated version of The Addams Family, voiced by Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Nick Kroll, Snoop Dogg , Bette Midler, and Allison Janney, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Finn Wolfhard, was also released in 2019.

‘ Wednesday ‘
Nearly 60 years after Mizzy first snapped the classic theme song together, The Addams Family continues to resurface on the tube.
In the 2022 Netlfix comedy-horror series Wednesday , the code to enter the secret society of the Nightshades is to snap twice , a charming homage to the original song.
