There are many ways to present a topic. Your personality, the topic at hand, and your audience’s personas will help you determine which style would best fit you and your audience.

Five tips to set yourself apart.

Never underestimate the power of great communication. It can help you land the job of your dreams, attract investors to back your idea, or elevate your stature within your organization. But while there are plenty of good speakers in the world, you can set yourself apart out by being the person who can deliver something great over and over. Here are a few tips for business professionals who want to move from being good speakers to great ones: be concise (the fewer words, the better); never use bullet points (photos and images paired together are more memorable); don’t underestimate the power of your voice (raise and lower it for emphasis); give your audience something extra (unexpected moments will grab their attention); rehearse (the best speakers are the best because they practice — a lot).

He was a frequent guest on CNBC and had been delivering business presentations for at least 20 years before we met. And yet, the CEO wanted to sharpen his public speaking skills.

Google Cloud Next 2024: Everything announced so far

Google’s Cloud Next 2024 event takes place in Las Vegas through Thursday, and that means lots of new cloud-focused news on everything from Gemini, Google’s AI-powered chatbot , to AI to devops and security. Last year’s event was the first in-person Cloud Next since 2019, and Google took to the stage to show off its ongoing dedication to AI with its Duet AI for Gmail and many other debuts , including expansion of generative AI to its security product line and other enterprise-focused updates and debuts .

Don’t have time to watch the full archive of Google’s keynote event ? That’s OK; we’ve summed up the most important parts of the event below, with additional details from the TechCrunch team on the ground at the event. And Tuesday’s updates weren’t the only things Google made available to non-attendees — Wednesday’s developer-focused stream started at 10:30 a.m. PT .

Google Vids

Leveraging AI to help customers develop creative content is something Big Tech is looking for, and Tuesday, Google introduced its version. Google Vids, a new AI-fueled video creation tool , is the latest feature added to the Google Workspace.

Here’s how it works: Google claims users can make videos alongside other Workspace tools like Docs and Sheets. The editing, writing and production is all there. You also can collaborate with colleagues in real time within Google Vids. Read more

Gemini Code Assist

After reading about Google’s new Gemini Code Assist , an enterprise-focused AI code completion and assistance tool, you may be asking yourself if that sounds familiar. And you would be correct. TechCrunch Senior Editor Frederic Lardinois writes that “Google previously offered a similar service under the now-defunct Duet AI branding.” Then Gemini came along. Code Assist is a direct competitor to GitHub’s Copilot Enterprise. Here’s why

Google Workspace

Among the new features are voice prompts to kick off the AI-based “Help me write” feature in Gmail while on the go . Another one for Gmail includes a way to instantly turn rough email drafts into a more polished email. Over on Sheets, you can send out a customizable alert when a certain field changes. Meanwhile, a new set of templates make starting a new spreadsheet easier. For the Doc lovers, there is support for tabs now. This is good because, according to the company, you can “organize information in a single document instead of linking to multiple documents or searching through Drive.” Of course, subscribers get the goodies first. Google also seems to have plans to monetize two of its new AI features for the Google Workspace productivity suite. This will look like $10/month/user add-on packages. One will be for the new AI meetings and messaging add-on that takes notes for you, provides meeting summaries and translates content into 69 languages. The other is for the introduced AI security package, which helps admins keep Google Workspace content more secure. Read more

In February, Google announced an image generator built into Gemini, Google’s AI-powered chatbot. The company pulled it shortly after it was found to be randomly injecting gender and racial diversity into prompts about people. This resulted in some offensive inaccuracies. While we waited for an eventual re-release, Google came out with the enhanced image-generating tool, Imagen 2 . This is inside its Vertex AI developer platform and has more of a focus on enterprise. Imagen 2 is now generally available and comes with some fun new capabilities, including inpainting and outpainting. There’s also what Google’s calling “text-to-live images” where you  can now create short, four-second videos from text prompts, along the lines of AI-powered clip generation tools like Runway ,  Pika  and  Irreverent Labs . Vertex AI Agent Builder

We can all use a little bit of help, right? Meet Google’s Vertex AI Agent Builder, a new tool to help companies build AI agents.

“Vertex AI Agent Builder allows people to very easily and quickly build conversational agents,” Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said. “You can build and deploy production-ready, generative AI-powered conversational agents and instruct and guide them the same way that you do humans to improve the quality and correctness of answers from models.”

To do this, the company uses a process called “grounding,” where the answers are tied to something considered to be a reliable source. In this case, it’s relying on Google Search (which in reality could or could not be accurate). Read more

Gemini comes to databases

Google calls Gemini in Databases a collection of features that “simplify all aspects of the database journey.” In less jargony language, it’s a bundle of AI-powered, developer-focused tools for Google Cloud customers who are creating, monitoring and migrating app databases. Read more

Google renews its focus on data sovereignty

Security tools get some AI love

Google jumps on board the productizing generative AI-powered security tool train with a number of new products and features aimed at large companies. Those include Threat Intelligence, which can analyze large portions of potentially malicious code. It also lets users perform natural language searches for ongoing threats or indicators of compromise. Another is Chronicle, Google’s cybersecurity telemetry offering for cloud customers to assist with cybersecurity investigations. The third is the enterprise cybersecurity and risk management suite Security Command Center. Read more

Nvidia’s Blackwell platform

One of the anticipated announcements is Nvidia’s next-generation Blackwell platform coming to Google Cloud in early 2025. Yes, that seems so far away. However, here is what to look forward to: support for the high-performance Nvidia HGX B200 for AI and HPC workloads and GB200 NBL72 for large language model (LLM) training. Oh, and we can reveal that the GB200 servers will be liquid-cooled. Read more

Chrome Enterprise Premium

Meanwhile, Google is expanding its Chrome Enterprise product suite with the launch of Chrome Enterprise Premium . What’s new here is that it mainly pertains mostly to security capabilities of the existing service, based on the insight that browsers are now the endpoints where most of the high-value work inside a company is done. Gemini 1.5 Pro

Everyone can use a “half” every now and again, and Google obliges with Gemini 1.5 Pro. This, Kyle Wiggers writes, is “Google’s most capable generative AI model,” and is now available in public preview on Vertex AI, Google’s enterprise-focused AI development platform. Here’s what you get for that half: T he amount of context that it can process, which is from 128,000 tokens up to 1 million tokens, where “tokens” refers to subdivided bits of raw data (like the syllables “fan,” “tas” and “tic” in the word “fantastic”). Open source tools

At Google Cloud Next 2024, the company debuted a number of open source tools primarily aimed at supporting generative AI projects and infrastructure. One is Max Diffusion, which is a collection of reference implementations of various diffusion models that run on XLA, or Accelerated Linear Algebra, devices. Then there is JetStream, a new engine to run generative AI models. The third is MaxTest, a collection of text-generating AI models targeting TPUs and Nvidia GPUs in the cloud. Read more

We don’t know a lot about this one, however, here is what we do know : Google Cloud joins AWS and Azure in announcing its first custom-built Arm processor, dubbed Axion. Frederic Lardinois writes that “based on Arm’s Neoverse 2 designs, Google says its Axion instances offer 30% better performance than other Arm-based instances from competitors like AWS and Microsoft and up to 50% better performance and 60% better energy efficiency than comparable X86-based instances.” Read more

Decades after their service, "Rosie the Riveters" to be honored with Congressional Gold Medal

This week, a long-overdue Congressional Gold Medal will be presented to the women who worked in factories during World War II and inspired " Rosie the Riveter ." 

The youngest workers who will be honored are in their 80s. Some are a century old. Of the millions of women who performed exceptional service during the war, just dozens have survived long enough to see their work recognized with one of the nation's highest honors. 

One of those women is Susan King, who at the age of 99 is still wielding a rivet gun like she did when building war planes in Baltimore's Eastern Aircraft Factory. King was 18 when she first started at the factory. She was one of 20 million workers who were credentialed as defense workers and hired to fill the jobs men left behind once they were drafted into war. 

"In my mind, I was not a factory worker," King said. "I was doing something so I wouldn't have to be a maid." 

The can-do women were soon immortalized in an iconic image of a woman in a jumpsuit and red-spotted bandana. Soon, all the women working became known as "Rosie the Riveters." But after the war, as veterans received parades and metals, the Rosies were ignored. Many of them lost their jobs. It took decades for their service to become appreciated. 

Gregory Cooke, a historian and the son of a Rosie, said that he believes most of the lack of appreciation is "because they're women." 

"I don't think White women have ever gotten their just due as Rosies for the work they did on World War II, and then we go into Black women," said Cooke, who produced and directed "Invisible Warriors," a soon-to-be-released documentary shining light on the forgotten Rosies. "Mrs. King is the only Black woman I've met, who understood her role and significance as a Rosie. Most of these women have gone to their graves, including my mother, not understanding their historic significance." 

King has spent her life educating the generations that followed about what her life looked like. That collective memory is also being preserved at the Glenn L. Martin Aviation Museum in Maryland and at Rosie the Riveter National Historic Park in Richmond, California, which sits on the shoreline where battleships were once made. Jeanne Gibson and Marian Sousa both worked at that site. 

Sousa said the war work was a family effort: Her two sisters, Phyllis and Marge, were welders and her mother Mildred was a spray painter. "It gave me a backbone," Sousa said. "There was a lot of men who still were holding back on this. They didn't want women out of the kitchen." 

Her sister, Phyllis Gould, was one of the loudest voices pushing to have the Rosies recognized. In 2014, she was among several Rosies invited to the White House after writing a letter to then-Vice President Joe Biden pushing for the observance of a National Rosie the Riveter Day. Gould also helped design the Congressional Gold Medal that will be issued. But Gould won't be in Washington, D.C. this week. She passed away in 2021 , at the age of 99. 

About 30 Riveters will be honored on Wednesday. King will be among them.

"I guess I've lived long enough to be Black and important in America," said King. "And that's the way I put it. If I were not near a hundred years old, if I were not Black, if I had not done these, I would never been gone to Washington."

Michael Keaton, Beetlejuice himself, showed up at Warner Bros ‘ CinemaCon presentation for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Keaton, who already has seen the movie twice, said: “Truthfully, I don’t think it’s a secret anymore, but [Tim Burton] and I over the years kicked the notion around. Three or five years passed, we’d say, ‘What do you think?’ Finally we got it right. But also the script — it’s very difficult thing to write. Frankly, I followed his lead. I’ll tell you this, though, it’s really f*cking good. In fact, it’s great.”

“There is a spirit of improvisation,” said Burton about the set.

Also onstage were pic’s actors Monica Belluci, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux and original castmember O’Hara.

“There is no sequel without Catherine,” said Keaton. The actress was concerned she’d never come back for Part 2. The extended trailer, very similar to the teaser, shows VFX-palooza with a Beetlejuice snake in the clouds, a subway station scene, Ryder summoning Beetlejuice and her character wondering if the living and the dead can co-exist in the same world. There’s a plane falling from the sky and Keaton’s Beetlejuice hitting on O’Hara’s Delia Deetz.

The pic comes out September 6. Don’t be shocked if this film’s domestic opening approaches September-record levels, the highest being It with $123.4M in 2018.

Freezing Russians plead for help from Vladimir Putin as heating fail leaves them 'fighting for survival'

On the same day the temperature reached -21 degrees Celsius outside, Kazimir Belev's heating stopped working.

It's been patchy in the past, but this time, things are different.

It's not just his apartment or his building that's affected.

"It turned out that the problem is much bigger than in previous cases," the 31-year-old said. 

"Two large districts of the city with a population of over a million people were left without heating."

Kazimir lives in Novosibirsk, in southern Russia.

But if the growing chorus of complaints on social media is anything to go by, infrastructure issues are affecting almost every corner of the country.

As temperatures plunge, Russia's aging patchwork of central heating systems is a major concern.

In some cases, entire cities rely on one Soviet-era boiler plant to stay warm.

The heating first went off in Kazimir's apartment on January 11.

While it returned sporadically in subsequent days, on Wednesday, it shut down completely.

Anecdotal evidence suggests many of the city's 1.5 million residents are affected. 

In one video, floods of hot water which would usually be pumped into radiators in homes and other public buildings can be seen flowing down Novosibirsk's streets.

"The apartment is getting colder hour by hour," said Kazimir, who can't turn to other sources of heating.

"Connecting a powerful electric heater is like voluntarily starting a fire. The power grid here is quite weak.

"It already happened: the sockets were melting because someone plugged in a heater."

The issues appear widespread.

In Elektrostal, near Moscow, a video shows women huddled around a bonfire outside their apartments.

They say their radiators stopped working earlier this month. 

The capital averages highs of -5C in January. 

"We are using everything to keep us warm, it's still impossible to stay inside," one says, before the group breaks into a chant of: "We are freezing! We are freezing!"

In another clip, filmed in the village of Selyatino, locals described the situation as "horrible" and say they're in a "fight for survival".

A group of residents in the Khimki area appealed directly to President Vladimir Putin to fix their heating in a video circulating on messaging service Telegram.

"We are sitting at -25 degrees outside. Our entire buildings are here," one woman says, claiming residents have no hot or cold water.

"Millions of appeals, millions of complaints but it's all in vain. It seems like no one cares about our situation."

Putin's tricky timing

The rumblings come at an inconvenient time for the Russian president, who is preparing for an election in March.

While the result is considered a foregone conclusion — allegations of electoral fraud have accompanied Putin's previous victories — any insinuation the country is crumbling will be unwelcome at the Kremlin, which has diverted significant public funds to prop up its invasion of Ukraine.

In 2010, official estimates put the repair bill for Russia's housing and municipal infrastructure at $US200 billion ($203 billion at the time).

Vlad Mykhnenko, an associate professor in sustainable urban development at Oxford University, said, based on current spending levels, it would take more than 70 years for Russia to fix even the issues it has now.

He's expecting it to lead to an "avalanche of disasters".

"We are seeing more and more videos appearing. I've seen some cases in which people didn't have heating for two years," Dr Mykhnenko said.

"So there are places, and some of them are fairly big cities of 100,000, 200,000, 300,000 people, and they haven't got heating and they're paying the full energy cost. It looks like the situation is getting worse."

The biggest issues have come outside the major cities of Moscow and St Petersburg, where the standard of living is deteriorating rapidly.

Magadan Oblast, in eastern Siberia, is about as far from the capital as you can get.

A local woman in the area posted a video of icicles coming from the interior of an apartment building, which has since gone viral.

"Is this normal? Everything is frozen. Absolutely everything. It's bitterly cold," she says.

If a dwelling's central heating stops working, the pipes can freeze and crack, meaning when it's eventually turned on again, water gushes inside.

One post claimed a neighbour's dog left home alone had been "boiled alive" when a pipe burst and their apartment flooded.

State media seldom highlights the issues, but even it has not been able to ignore the situation completely.

In Moscow, a video of dark brown liquid cascading from the ceiling of a university did the rounds online. Officials said it was water, but students claimed it was sewage.

"Despite titanic efforts to update all housing and communal-services systems, some of them remain in a dilapidated state," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters last week.

Last year, Sergei Pakhomov, a senior MP, told the state-run newspaper Izvestia some parts of the country were still serviced by 90-year-old asbestos water pipes.

"Asbestos would probably be good," Dr Mykhnenko said.

"I think old, old iron pipes in which clean water comes in and brown, dirty liquid comes out are a bigger issue."

'A factory producing bullets also has to supply heating for the local town'

Corruption is also entwined with the backlog.

Boiler executives in the city of Tver have been accused of embezzling 84 million roubles ($1.43 million) from residents' heating bills.

Meanwhile, in Podolsk, near Moscow, authorities arrested two senior executives and a regional official after a breakdown at a boiler plant left 22,000 people without heating last week.

The facility is owned by the Klimovsk Specialised Ammunition Plant, which is one of the country's largest firearm cartridge producers.

"You have this bizarre system in which a factory producing bullets also has to supply heating for the local town," Dr Mykhnenko said.

"And, the owner couldn't care less about that, obviously, because that's a cost, he's not going to recuperate.

"It creates enormous opportunities for corruption, taking money for repairs that are never done."

Amid increasing disquiet, Putin ordered the ammunition plant, and flailing boiler facility, be nationalised.

But with much of winter still to come, and the number of Russians freezing and frustrated growing, where the blame will lay for the chaos, is an important question ahead of March's election.

Marysville church to host Dana Nessel for presentation on senior scams

A Marysville church is slated to host Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel later this month for a presentation to relay information on senior scams.

According to the Rev. Curtis Clarke, a pastor for the Marysville United Methodist Church, the event, which is set for Saturday, April 27, will provide details on how to avoid scams and actions individuals can take to reduce their risk of being victimized.

“A recent study f rom the University of Michigan confirmed that senior citizens are more likely to fall victim to phone, mail, and online scams,” he said via email. “More than two-thirds of older Michigan residents report someone tried to scam in the past two years. This is a serious threat to the safety and security of our senior population.”

Clarke said the event is part of the church’s semiannual “Lunch and Learn” series, and that they were opening up the April 27 session to the community, citing Nessel’s appearance.

A spokesperson from the attorney general’s office confirmed the appearance on Friday.

Clarke said guests are invited to bring their own lunch in the church’s fellowship hall at 721 W. Huron Blvd. from noon to 12:30 p.m. when the presentation would begin. Refreshments will be provided afterward.
