Ph.D. in Law

The Ph.D. in Law prepares graduates for global leadership in the judiciary, academia, business and government. Since 1966, the program has offered a select number of diverse students the opportunity to attain their highest professional aspirations and career goals. A preeminent center for interdisciplinary legal studies, UW Law offers a global focus and innovative approach to integrating legal scholarship within the humanities and social sciences, medicine and global health, business and technology, and environmental and public policy.

The Ph.D. program is designed to provide a rich and thorough foundation in research methodologies, jurisprudence, legal theory, policy, dissertation preparation and ready access to specialized elective coursework from within the law school and university-wide research centers, institutes and schools. Throughout the program, our graduate students receive individualized attention from exceptional faculty and staff.

With its long and respected history, the Ph.D. program provides students with a global alumni network. Alumni are committed supporters and mentors and lead in many sectors around the world.

The Ph.D. program requires a minimum of three years’ study, at least two years of which are comprised of coursework taken while in residence at the UW. Ph.D. candidates must complete 90 credits. A minimum of 60 credits must be taken at the UW including a minimum of 27 dissertation credits. Some of the credits earned in an LL.M. program may be counted among the 60 credits.

Doctoral dissertation committees are led by faculty experts from UW Law and include members with deep knowledge and expertise from across the university. Students can customize their studies with interdisciplinary coursework, independent study, field research, global internships and externships.

These scholarships are not offered by LSAC, but rather by third-party organizations. 

• 7Sage 7K Law School Scholarship — $7,000 scholarship opportunity for pre-law and incoming 1L students. Winner is selected based on response to two short essay prompts.
• ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund   — Grants 10 to 20 incoming diverse law students with $15,000 of financial assistance over the course of their three years in law school.
• American Indian College Fund  — Hundreds of scholarships are available for all areas of study under the Full Circle Scholarship Program. Students attending tribal colleges and universities can receive additional scholarship support with the program. Any Native American U.S. citizen who is an enrolled member or a descendant of an enrolled member of a state or federally recognized tribe may apply.

• The LSAT Nerds Scholarship Fund  — Provides recipients with one-on-one LSAT tutoring, access to The LSAT Nerds’ comprehensive curriculum, several small group workshops each week, and a wide array of application resources covering every aspect of the admission process.
• Marshall-Motley Scholars Program (MMSP)  — Named for civil rights pioneers Thurgood Marshall and Constance Baker Motley, this program provides full financial support for all law school expenses and long-term career and leadership opportunities to 50 aspiring civil rights lawyers over the next five years. You can learn more about the program in  LSAC’s MMSP webinar .
• Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF)   — Supports law students who seek to further MALDEF’s mission of advancing the civil rights of the Latino community in the United States through the legal profession. In recent years, MALDEF has annually awarded 5 to 15 scholarships of $2,000 to $10,000 each to deserving law students from throughout the nation.
• NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc.   — Has provided over $19 million in financial support to undergraduates and law students, making it possible for hundreds of highly qualified students to attend the nation’s most competitive colleges, universities, and law schools.
• Pipeline to Practice Foundation  — The Pipeline to Practice Foundation is committed to enhancing diversity in the legal profession by supporting diverse law students and early career attorneys at key stages of their academic and professional development. The Foundation seeks to remove financial barriers to opportunity and success by offering entering law students free access to programming, mentors, and resources throughout their academic and professional careers.
• Sarita and Claire Wright Lucas Foundation — Awards $5,000 scholarships to African-American female law students who have committed to careers as prosecutors. For these future prosecutors, the scholarship program covers the cost of the bar application and preparation up to $5,000. The scholarship program also offers a $5,000 incentive for scholarship recipients who secure employment as prosecutors.
• The Sidney B. Williams, Jr. Scholar Program   — The Scholar Program of the  Foundation for the Advancement of Diversity in IP Law  provides financial and other support for racially and ethnically diverse, STEM education students interested in exploring a career in patent law. Scholars are eligible for consideration to receive a three-year tuition grant award of $10,000 per year.
• United Negro College Fund (UNCF)  — For more than seven decades, UNCF has raised more than $5 billion to help more than 500,000 students attend college, graduate, and become leaders.
• Weil Legal Innovators (WLI) Program — Engages rising law school students in addressing some of today's most pressing social and legal challenges. Innovators defer their first year of law school to work at a WLI partner nonprofit organization for a paid public service fellowship.
• Zelle Diversity In Law Scholarship   — Created for law students who either (1) are a member of a population or group whose background and perspectives are historically underrepresented in the private practice of law, or (2) demonstrate a long-standing commitment to diversity that will be furthered by award of the scholarship.

Doctor of Science of Law (JSD)

The Doctor of the Science of Law (JSD) is the Law School’s most advanced law degree, and is considered a doctorate equivalent to a Ph.D.  It is designed for those interested in becoming scholars and teachers of law including interdisciplinary approaches to law.

Study toward the degree is open only to a small number of exceptionally well-qualified students who hold a JD or LL.B earned outside the United States.  Students in the program develop substantive expertise in one or more fields of law and have the opportunity to pursue substantive and methodological training in allied disciplines across the broader university, including but not limited to, the social sciences, humanities, and engineering.  The program culminates in the student producing a dissertation under the personal supervision of a Faculty committee comprised of law school professors as well as, where appropriate given the student’s interests, faculty from other departments of the university.

There are two different tracks for admission into the JSD program.  A minimum of two students will be admitted from among students who have completed the Stanford Program in International Legal Studies (SPILS)  at Stanford Law School.  In addition, students at Stanford and at other law schools in the United States who will have completed LLM degrees prior to the commencement of the JSD program are encouraged to apply for admission and will be seriously considered.  To be competitive, students applying from LLM programs must have completed (and must submit) a serious piece of independent, original research demonstrating their scholarly potential.

Admission to the JSD program is on a highly selective basis. Please note that admission to SPILS or to any Stanford LLM program does not imply a commitment by Stanford Law School to accept a student into the JSD program.

A vibrant center of intellectual life.

The Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) is the most advanced law degree at American University Washington College of Law (WCL). The SJD program brings together aspiring legal academics and other top legal professionals from around the world who wish to research and write a dissertation of publishable quality under the instruction of faculty members who are recognized experts and leading practitioners in their fields. SJD candidates’ areas of scholarship include international finance and tax law, criminal justice reform, intellectual property law, environmental law, and international human rights law.

Following a successful oral defense and completed dissertation, WCL proudly welcomes each candidate into an international community of alumni scholars working in academia, government, and the non-profit sector. Coordinated JD/PhD Program

Harvard Law School and the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

The Coordinated JD/PhD Program is designed for students interested in completing interdisciplinary work at Harvard University and is founded on the belief that students’ legal studies and their arts and sciences graduate studies can be mutually enriched through this pursuit. Students completing the coordinated program receive a JD from Harvard Law School (HLS) and a PhD from the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences  (Harvard Griffin GSAS). It is expected that these students will be strong candidates for teaching posts at law schools and in arts and sciences programs, as well as for other positions in law and academia. Prospective students interested in the coordinated program may reach out to  HLS J.D. Admissions  and the  Harvard Griffin GSAS Office of Admissions  to learn more. Current and admitted students interested in the coordinated program are encouraged to contact  April Pettit , in the Office of Academic Affairs at HLS for questions about the JD program, or  Dan Volchok , Assistant Dean of Student Success at Harvard Griffin GSAS for questions about the PhD programs.

Prospective students must separately apply to and be admitted to both HLS and a Harvard Griffin GSAS PhD program in order to participate in the coordinated JD/PhD program.

• Students enrolled in HLS, but not yet admitted to Harvard Griffin GSAS, must apply to Harvard Griffin GSAS no later than the 2L year, meeting the Harvard Griffin GSAS application deadline for matriculation the following year.
• Students enrolled in Harvard Griffin GSAS, but not yet admitted to HLS, should apply to HLS no later than the G3 year, meeting the HLS application deadline for matriculation the following year.
• Please see below for details about participation in the coordinated program for Harvard Griffin GSAS students who apply and are admitted to HLS after the G3 year.

Once admitted to both schools, students must submit a proposed Plan of Study to the coordinated program no later than October 1 of the academic year following admission to both schools. Students should submit the Plan of Study to April Pettit in the Office of Academic Affairs at HLS.

Please note: Harvard Griffin GSAS students who apply to and are admitted to HLS after the G3 year at Harvard Griffin GSAS must then separately apply to the coordinated program. The application to the coordinated program should include (1) a statement detailing the way in which the student plans to integrate his or her legal studies with his or her graduate studies including how work done at HLS will inform the dissertation work and vice versa; and (2) a letter of support from the primary Harvard Griffin GSAS advisor; and (3) the Plan of Study.

The JD/PhD committee will review the applications to determine admission to the coordinated program.

Students will be registered in only one School during any given semester/term. Pursuant to ABA rules, students must  complete all requirements for the JD degree within seven years of the date they first enroll in HLS ; they may graduate from HLS before completing the PhD. Students must have satisfactorily completed at least 16 half courses in their Harvard Griffin GSAS department to receive the PhD. Students in the coordinated program will have two primary faculty advisors, one at HLS and one at Harvard Griffin GSAS, who will jointly advise students.

Students will be expected to complete the first-year program, three upper-level fall or spring semesters, and two winter terms at HLS, for a total of five fall and spring semesters and three winter terms. In lieu of the sixth HLS semester generally required of JD students, students in the coordinated program may take a semester at Harvard Griffin GSAS, completing courses or dissertation work pre-approved by HLS, and equivalent to at least 10 HLS credits. This Harvard Griffin GSAS semester may be taken only after a student has matriculated at HLS and completed their entire first year of study there. Students and their faculty advisors will determine the most appropriate sequencing for each student’s course of study, keeping in mind the HLS course, credit, and residency requirements for this program.

Course and Credit Requirements

First-year program.

The first year at HLS consists of (1) Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law, Legislation and Regulation, Property, and Torts; (2) First-year Legal Research and Writing; (3) January Experiential Term; and (4) a spring upper-level elective at HLS of a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 classroom credits.

Upper-Level Years

Credit and residency requirements.

Students must earn no fewer than 52 credits beyond the first year, including 36 HLS classroom credits. Classroom credits include those connected to courses, seminars and reading groups, but not writing or clinical credits. The 36 required classroom credits also include the required minimum of two credits to satisfy the Professional Responsibility Requirement and credits from the required winter terms (provided that the course chosen offers classroom credits). Of the remaining 16 required HLS credits, a maximum of ten are earned through courses or tutorials taken in Harvard Griffin GSAS and/or for dissertation writing (see below). Note that students must have their advisor’s approval before engaging in a semester of Harvard Griffin GSAS dissertation writing that is expected to count toward the HLS credit requirements . The remaining six required HLS credits may be earned in classroom, writing or clinical courses.

While at HLS, students must be enrolled in a minimum of ten total credits each semester in HLS or Harvard Griffin GSAS, with no fewer than eight of these being HLS classroom credits toward the requirement of 36 HLS classroom credits.

Winter Term Requirement

Students also must enroll in the HLS winter term two times during their upper-level years in the program. Each of the winter terms must follow a fall term enrollment or precede a spring term enrollment at HLS. Students may register for a course of two or three credits. JD/PhD students will be permitted to spend one of the winter terms in the HLS Winter Writing Program, provided they are engaged in written work for HLS credit according to the rules of that program.

Written Work Requirement

JD/PhD students must complete the JD Written Work Requirement. Students are permitted to satisfy the requirement with a portion of their dissertation, provided this work meets HLS standards for written work. However, any portion of the dissertation counted toward the JD Written Work Requirement cannot also be used as part of the 10 HLS-equivalent credits earned during a student’s Harvard Griffin GSAS semester. Further information about the J.D. Written Work Requirement and the Winter Term Writing Program is available from the HLS Registrar’s Office .

Pro Bono Requirement

JD/PhD students must complete the  HLS Pro Bono Requirement  of 50 hours of public service.

Residency Requirement

A minimum of two years of full-time study in residence is required for all PhD programs in the Harvard Griffin GSAS. During the period of registration at HLS, coordinated JD/PhD students will have “study-at-another-Harvard-school” status in Harvard Griffin GSAS.

Structure of Academic Work

Students will ordinarily be enrolled for at least four years (8 terms) in Harvard Griffin GSAS. They must complete at least 16 half courses to receive their PhD. Students may cross-register for a limited number of Harvard Griffin GSAS courses during their upper-level terms at HLS. Depending on the Harvard Griffin GSAS department, these courses may count toward the PhD. However, JD/PhD students may count a maximum of 10 credits from Harvard Griffin GSAS coursework or dissertation writing toward the JD. Therefore, students planning to spend a semester enrolled at Harvard Griffin GSAS taking courses or writing the dissertation for which they will earn 10 HLS credits may not also count cross-registered Harvard Griffin GSAS courses toward the JD.

General Examinations

In most departments, once having completed the required coursework, students must pass a general examination or other preliminary or qualifying examinations before undertaking independent research on a dissertation. Normally, when the nature of the field and previous preparation permit, students should pass these examinations by the end of the second year of full-time academic residence.

PhD Dissertation

The student’s dissertation prospectus must be approved by the department. A student who wishes to present as a dissertation a published article, series of articles, book or other document, or a manuscript that has been accepted for publication, must have the approval of the department concerned. In no case, however, may a dissertation be presented that has already been submitted toward another degree, either at Harvard or elsewhere. The Dissertation Acceptance Certificate must be signed by at least three readers approved by the student’s department, two of whom must be members of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). FAS emeriti (including research professors) and faculty members from other schools at Harvard who hold appointments on GSAS degree committees are authorized to sign the Dissertation Acceptance Certificates as FAS members. GSAS strongly recommends that the chair of the dissertation committee be a member of FAS. The third reader may be a member of the HLS faculty.

Requirement of Satisfactory Status

Continuous registration, a satisfactory grade record, and evidence that satisfactory progress is being made toward the degree are required of all candidates for graduate degrees offered by FAS. All students in Harvard Griffin GSAS must be making satisfactory progress in order to be eligible for any type of financial aid and teaching. The following five provisions are the general definition of satisfactory progress during registration in Harvard Griffin GSAS:

• During the first two years of graduate study any student who has completed expected requirements is considered to be making satisfactory progress.
• In each of the first two years, a student must have achieved the minimum grade-point average required by the faculty, a B average. (see Harvard Griffin GSAS Policies: Grade and Examination Requirements ).
• By the end of the third year, a student must have passed general examinations or the departmental equivalent.
• By the end of the fourth year, a student must have obtained approval of a dissertation prospectus or its departmental equivalent.
• By the end of the fifth year and each subsequent year during which a student is allowed to register, they must have produced at least one acceptable chapter of the dissertation.

Other Requirements

Ordinarily, programs will have a language requirement and an expectation of teaching. Students should consult with their Harvard Griffin GSAS departments for more information about these requirements.

There are a number of possible academic schedules for students pursuing both degrees. Three sequences are outlined below, but students may propose alternative sequences. In considering their courses of study, students should be aware that their financial aid packages might be affected at the school in which they defer enrollment.

Updated Plans of Study

By October 1 each year, current JD/PhD students should submit an updated Plan of Study to April Pettit, in the HLS Office of Academic Affairs.

Other Academic Information

Faculty advising.

Students in the program will have primary faculty advisors at both HLS and at Harvard Griffin GSAS. If possible, HLS faculty advisors should be selected before the completion of the 2L year. The HLS faculty advisor must sign off on any dissertation writing a student expects to use for JD credit. In some Harvard Griffin GSAS departments, the director of graduate studies serves as the faculty advisor during the first two years of study. Faculty advisors will supervise students’ academic work, advise students on their courses of study and on specific classes appropriate for their PhD work, and approve the courses of study for their students on an annual basis. If appropriate, the HLS advisor will be the third reader on the student’s dissertation committee, with at least two readers required to be members of FAS.

Leaving the JD/PhD Program

If a student fails to make adequate progress toward the PhD, the student’s faculty advisors will be permitted to withdraw the student from the program. In such cases, in order to receive the JD degree, a student will still need to meet the graduation and credit requirements for the JD degree.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Harvard law school.

Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

The minimum financial requirement for the PhD is at least four terms of full tuition followed by two years of reduced tuition and a facilities fee unless the degree is completed in less than four years. The financial aid awarded upon admission to the PhD program is available during those terms in which the student is enrolled in Harvard Griffin GSAS. Students should refer to their notice of financial support provided by their department upon admission to Harvard Griffin GSAS. Students should consult with their GSAS departments for more information.

Administrative Information

The HLS Registrar’s Office, the FAS Registrar’s Office, the GSAS Assistant Dean of Student Success, the HLS Associate Director of Academic Affairs, and the appropriate financial aid officers, will coordinate on students’ registration status and updated plans of study.

Housing and Student Life

GSAS and HLS will work together to ensure that the student services offered by both Schools are available to JD/PhD students during all their years in the Coordinated Program, including career and counseling offices, financial aid offices, student centers, and alumni offices. Students in the coordinated program will have email accounts at both schools throughout the program. Disability services and visa requirements will be coordinated on a case-by-case basis by the HLS Dean of Students and Registrar and by the Harvard Griffin GSAS Assistant Dean for Student Success. Students may apply for housing through either School for the years in which they are enrolled for at least one semester/term at both Schools. In all other years, students must apply for housing to the School in which they are enrolled.

Ph.D. Admission

Applications will be accepted in the fall of 2023 for study to commence in the fall of 2024. The application deadline is December 15, 2023, but the Admissions Committee will begin to review each application when it is complete. Applications must be submitted via Yale University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences application website.

• Personal Statement (500-1000 words) The personal statement should describe the applicant’s motivations for pursuing the Ph.D. in Law degree and should describe the applicant’s qualifications to undertake the proposed course of study, especially qualifications that are not evident from the applicant’s CV.
• Research Proposal (1000 words) The research proposal should describe the project that the applicant plans to undertake as a dissertation. The proposal should describe the project’s scope, its scholarly significance and research methodology, including any source materials on which the project will rely or any empirical research that the applicant intends to undertake. The research proposal need not be as fully developed as a dissertation prospectus, and projects are expected to evolve over the course of students’ time in the program. Nonetheless, applicants are expected to have a clear sense of the general research project that they will undertake.
• Writing Sample The writing sample should be a piece of legal scholarship authored solely by the applicant. Ideally, the writing sample should be on a subject related to the applicant’s proposed research project. Submitted writing samples should be no more than the equivalent of 30-published pages in length (15,000 words)—an excerpt from a longer work may be used.
• Letters of Recommendation Applicants will be asked to identify three individuals willing to write letters of recommendation on their behalf. Recommenders will then receive an email with instructions about how to submit letters directly to the Graduate School. Applicants should choose recommenders who are best situated to evaluate an applicant’s past academic work and potential to produce first-rate legal scholarship. The Ph.D. Admissions Committee strongly recommends that at least two recommenders hold academic appointments at a law school.
• Test Scores The applicant will be asked to self-report his or her LSAT score; scores from any administration of the exam will be accepted. Prior to matriculation, those admitted to the Ph.D. in Law program will be required to provide formal confirmation of the self-reported score.
• Transcripts The applicant will need to upload records of academic performance to the online application prior to submission. No transcripts should be mailed. This upload may be in the form of a scanned copy of the applicant's transcript or academic record. If the transcript is in a language other than English, the applicant will also need to provide an English translation of the transcript. The translation must be certified to be an accurate translation of the original and be notarized or otherwise authenticated. The translation and the original transcript can then be uploaded to the application.
• Curriculum Vitae The applicant should submit a curriculum vitae listing all academic honors and awards, publications and presentations, and other professional accomplishments.
• Application Fee Each applicant must pay the application fee in the amount and manner required by the Graduate School.

Previous applicants who were not admitted to the Ph.D. in Law program and who wish to reapply must submit a completely new application and pay the application fee. Applicants who have been denied admission three times may not submit further applications.

JD Scholarships and Scholars Programs

NYU School of Law offers a host of scholarships to both incoming and current students. Entering students are considered for our main source of scholarship aid —Dean’s Awards — with their application for admission to the Law School, and they can submit additional applications to the specialized scholarships listed below. Once on campus, students can apply to other opportunities for both financial and programmatic support.

Current students should review our list of scholarships for 1Ls and for 2Ls . Scholarship awards are disbursed evenly between semesters.  Students must be enrolled full-time at the School of Law to be eligible to receive a scholarship award allocation during a given semester.

Prospective Students

Financial aid application and scholarship awards.

Most of our scholarship aid comes from Dean’s Award scholarships, which are merit- and/or need-based grants in amounts up to full tuition. These are meant to be used while enrolled full-time at NYU Law, with half of the award distributed at the beginning of each semester. Dean’s Awards are reduced by 40% in the 3L year if the recipient has gross earnings in excess of $25,000 during the summer between their 2L and 3L years. A small number of enrolling students who demonstrate exceptional merit will be awarded Vanderbilt Scholarships. Vanderbilt Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic excellence, professional and other extra-curricular accomplishments, and potential to become a successful leader in the legal profession.

All students admitted to NYU School of Law are considered for Dean’s and Vanderbilt Scholarships through the financial aid process. To be considered for these scholarships, admitted students must complete our on-line institutional financial aid application.  Instructions on completing the on-line financial aid application will be sent to admitted students beginning in early January.  All admitted students should submit the financial aid application including students who applied for a named scholarship program as part of their application for admission. Upon receipt of your completed financial aid application, the Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid will review the application together with your application for admission. You will be notified of any award(s) following the committee’s review.

Note:  If you will be 28 or younger on September 1 of the academic year for which you are applying for financial aid, parental financial information must be submitted on the financial aid application in order to be considered for need based awards.

All institutional financial aid determinations are made upon admission on a rolling basis (during the spring that immediately precedes a fall enrollment) and apply to all three years of the JD program.  Additionally, in order to be reviewed for eligibility for institutional JD financial aid, all incoming 1L students must complete the Law School's financial aid application no later than May 15 prior to the fall semester of their 1L year (or within 2 weeks of their actual admission, if admitted after May 15).  All financial aid determinations, including the Student Contribution determination, are final and not re-evaluated in subsequent years.

Programmatic Scholarships

Students with a strong interest in a specific field should apply for our programmatic scholarships. In addition to generous financial support, these programs offer fully integrated academic and professional programs that begin on the first day of class and continue throughout scholars ’ legal careers.

The priority deadline for all programmatic scholarships is December 1, and all scholarship applications must be submitted no later than January 1.  You are strongly encouraged to have a complete CAS report ready to be requested by the admissions office by December 1, and no later than January 1.

Full-Tuition Scholarships

Opening doors to the legal profession, UCLA Law offers full-tuition scholarships based on merit, need and achievement in overcoming adversity.

UCLA Law is excited to offer three full-scholarship programs to students pursing a J.D. degree. The UCLA Law Distinguished Scholars Award is a binding early-decision program providing full tuition for three years to exceptionally qualified students ready to commit to UCLA Law. The  UCLA Law Achievement Fellowship  is non-binding and provides full tuition for three years to high-achieving students who have overcome significant personal, educational or socio-economic hardships. The  Graton Scholarship  is also non-binding and provides full tuition for three years to students who are interested in pursuing legal careers in Native American law.

UCLA Law also offers the  Emmett Family Environmental Law Scholarship , one three-year, full tuition scholarship awarded to one exceptional incoming student who shows a dedicated commitment to pursuing a career in environmental law.

Distinguished Scholars Award

The UCLA Law Distinguished Scholars Award is a binding merit-based full tuition scholarship for a small number of the most exceptionally qualified applicants who have determined that UCLA Law is their first choice. The designation as a UCLA Law Distinguished Scholar will be the highest honor bestowed upon members of the incoming J.D. class.

Students selected as Distinguished Scholars must immediately withdraw applications from all other law schools, refrain from initiating applications to other law schools, and submit their Statement of Intent to Register and seat deposit (which will be refunded upon enrollment in the fall) by the date stated in their award letter. Students applying to this program may not apply to early decision programs at any other law schools unless they are waitlisted or denied admission as a Distinguished Scholar.

While waiting for a decision on the UCLA Law Distinguished Scholars Award, applicants may apply to other law schools regular decision with the commitment that if they are selected for the Distinguished Scholars Award, they will immediately withdraw applications from all other law schools and will enroll at UCLA Law, regardless of whether they were admitted to other law schools or have outstanding applications to other law schools.

Recipients of the award who are California residents will be awarded full resident tuition and fees for three academic years, beginning in fall 2024, provided they remain students in good standing. Recipients who are not California residents will be awarded full non-resident tuition and fees for their first year of law school, and full California resident tuition and fees for their second and third years of law school. * Most UCLA Law students are able to qualify for resident tuition status in their second and third years. The UCLA Health Insurance Fee, which can be waived with evidence of similar coverage, is not included and remains the responsibility of the student. No showing of financial need is required for these awards. Note that applicants for the Distinguished Scholars Award may not apply to the Early Decision Program. They may apply for the Achievement Fellowship.

For fall 2025 admission, the application deadline is November 15. Applicants must also take the LSAT or the GRE no later than October 31, 2024. To apply to this program, applicants must complete the UCLA School of Law application, and must electronically sign and submit the Distinguished Scholars Award Agreement included in the application. UCLA School of Law reserves the right to revoke an admissions offer in the event that an admitted applicant fails to comply with the UCLA Law Distinguished Scholars Award Agreement. In such an instance, UCLA also reserves the right to inform other law schools of the candidate's actions.

Finalists will be interviewed, and decisions will be announced by the end of December 2024. Please note that if an applicant is not offered the UCLA Law Distinguished Scholars Award, the applicant will still be considered for admission and for scholarship assistance on a non-binding basis. UCLA has a specialized admissions program for the Epstein Program in Public Interest Law and Policy (EPILP) for students with significant public interest backgrounds and ambitions. If you are a highly qualified candidate with a particular interest in EPILP and are selected as a finalist for the Distinguished Scholars Award, you may indicate during the selection process that you only want to be considered for the UCLA Law Distinguished Scholars binding admissions program contingent on being admitted to EPILP as well.

Achievement Fellowship Program

The UCLA Law Achievement Fellowship Program is a full tuition scholarship program designed specifically for a small number of academically talented, high-achieving applicants who have also overcome significant obstacles in life, such as socio-economic disadvantage, disability, being the first in their family to attend college, attending under-resourced schools, or other major hardships or challenges. Hardships such as homelessness, working multiple jobs or long hours in high school or college, being undocumented, living in foster care, receiving government assistance, and subsisting at or near the federal poverty line are just a few examples of the types of disadvantages that have been considered in the past when awarding the Achievement Fellowship.

Recipients of the UCLA Law Achievement Fellowship who are California residents will be awarded full resident tuition and fees for three academic years, beginning in fall 2024, provided they remain students in good standing. Recipients who are not California residents will be awarded full non-resident tuition and fees for their first year of law school, and full resident tuition and fees for their second and third years of law school.* The application deadline for the UCLA Law Achievement Fellowship Program is December 16, 2024. Applicants must also take the LSAT or the GRE no later than November 30, 2024. Finalists will be interviewed, and recipients will be announced no later than mid-April 2025. Unlike the UCLA Law Distinguished Scholars Program, this is not a "binding" program. Successful applicants may still consider other law schools, but they must indicate their desire to accept the scholarship and make a seat deposit (which will be refunded upon enrollment in the fall) by the deadline stated in their Achievement Fellowship award letter. Awards not accepted by this date will be offered to other candidates. Applicants who are not awarded the UCLA Law Achievement Fellowship will still be considered for admission and scholarship assistance.

To apply to this program, applicants must complete the UCLA School of Law application, and are required to include an additional one page essay describing in the detail the obstacles they have overcome in life and why they are a strong candidate for the program. Note that applicants to the Achievement Fellowship may not apply Early Decision. They may apply to the Distinguished Scholars Program. Graton Scholarship

The Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria has established the Graton Scholarship , which provides a three-year, full tuition scholarship to students interested in pursuing legal careers in Native American law.

The selected Graton Scholars will become part of a thriving network of students, professors, alumni, and legal professionals working on the cutting edge of the fields of tribal law, federal Indian law, and international Indigenous rights. For fall 2025 admission, the application deadline is February 1.  However, awards are made on a rolling basis and applicants are highly encouraged to apply early. To apply, candidates should express their interest in the scholarship by including a maximum 1000-word addendum with their application for admission, setting forth their record of personal or academic commitment to advocating on behalf of Native Nations, as well as further explicating their career aspirations in the field. The UCLA Law Admissions office may also identify applicants through the Admissions process who would be ideal candidates for the Graton Scholarship and invite them to apply.

The Graton Scholarships will be merit-based and awarded annually to incoming students who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for Native American law, as well as a record demonstrating a commitment to tribal communities, public service, and leadership in Indigenous rights. In past cohorts, both Native and non-Native students have been awarded the Graton Scholarship. Tribal members are strongly encouraged to apply.

In addition to receiving financial support, Graton Scholars will have access to UCLA School of Law's vast resources and expertise in this field. The Native Nations Law and Policy Center , founded by Professor Emerita Carole E. Goldberg , and directed by Professor Angela R. Riley , provides an intellectual hub for numerous programs and opportunities related to Indigenous rights. Graton Scholars will have the opportunity to work directly for Native Nations through the Tribal Legal Development Clinic , funded with a generous gift from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, which is under the direction of Mica Llerandi . Recent clinic projects have included drafting tribal codes, working on cultural resource protection with the Native American Heritage Commission, and providing judicial clerkship support to the Ho-Chunk Nation Supreme Court, among many others.

The Native Nations Law and Policy Center also offers a joint degree program in Law and American Indian Studies and maintains a close relationship with a vast campus-wide community of scholars and students with academic and cultural commitments to Native communities, such as the American Indian Studies Center , American Indian Studies Inter-departmental Program , and Fowler Museum , among others. UCLA Law is home to a thriving Native American Law Students Association (NALSA) , which is a national leader in student advocacy and support. NALSA membership provides access to participation in events such as the National NALSA Moot Court Competition and the National Native American Bar Association , among others.

In the spirit of the scholarship, Graton Scholars will be expected to take an active role in the school's Native American law activities and programs, and to help mentor and coach their successors, as second and third year students and thereafter, when they have graduated and embarked on their careers in the field.

The scholarship is named for the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, which established the Graton Scholarship in 2020 with a transformative $15 million gift, the largest of its kind ever given from a Native Nation to an American law school.

Emmett Family Environmental Law Scholarship

The Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at UCLA School of Law has established the Emmett Family Environmental Law Scholarship.

This is a three-year, full tuition scholarship awarded to one exceptional incoming student who shows a dedicated commitment to pursue a career in environmental law and outstanding promise to contribute to the field.  The recipient of this inaugural scholarship will be joining a community that draws on the resources of the country's premier public university to develop law and policy solutions for climate change and other environmental challenges.  These resources include the Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, which is among the leading environmental law programs in the country, with faculty members renowned for their public service, teaching excellence, and scholarship in state, federal, and international law.  Through groundbreaking research and public service initiatives, the Emmett Institute helps shape climate change and environmental law and policy in California, the United States, and jurisdictions around the world.

UCLA Law offers its students one of the country's most extensive environmental course offerings, covering a range of issues including natural resource protection, environmental justice, energy law, climate change law, pollution control, water law, toxics regulation, and international environmental law.  Ranked as one of the top environmental law programs in the country, the Emmett Institute also provides students with scholarship funding, experiential learning, and connections to a network of alumni in leadership positions across the country. Through one-on-one mentoring, our faculty help students find internships and early-career positions in government, nonprofits, and private practice. The Emmett Institute gives students opportunities to work at the forefront of climate and environmental advocacy in California and around the world.

To be considered for this scholarship, any interested applicant may include with their application an addendum expressing their interest in UCLA Law’s Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment.
