Kinnaird College for Women
About kinnaird college for women.
Founded in 1913, Lahore-based KCW claims to be "South Asia’s premier women’s institution".
It also refers to itself as “More than a college: a community enriched by the spirit of inquiry that kindles in the student.”
At its foundation, it was the only liberal arts college for women in pre-Partition Punjab. Now in Pakistan, it occupies the campus to which it moved in 1926, and which by 1939 had grown to more than 20 acres. It has distinctive period buildings and numerous trees, including the famed “Big Tree" at its centre.
It aims to be "A centre of excellence for the education of women, offering academic programmes of international standards and engaging in research and service that supports the development of new knowledge, ideas and social responsibility. This is in recognition and continuation of the reputation the College has of being the most prominent and prestigious institute for women in Pakistan.”
Its 3,300 students are educated across faculties of applied science and business studies; art, design and media studies; biological and life sciences; language, literature and education; physics and earth sciences; and social science and law. New courses include a master’s degrees in accounting and finance, and a master’s degree in English literature.
In order to graduate, students must take part in the Active Citizenship programme initiated in 2015. Other recent developments include the International Centre for Pakistani Writing in English, set up in 2014, and the college archive centre, set up in 2016 and now home to 28,000 images recording the history of the college.

What inspired you to work in this field?
Therapeutic radiography is a brilliant mix of science, technical ability and patient care. The diverse skills needed to thrive in this role mean the work is always challenging and always rewarding. It’s a profession that never stands still and we are used to implementing constant technological advances and improvements. This endless cycle of change and progress means our problem-solving abilities are second to none. But for me, the real reward comes from interaction with patients and their families. Radiotherapy treatment is usually delivered daily and can last anything up to eight weeks, so we really get to know people well during their time with us. We help to guide them through what can often be some of the most challenging times of their life. I think this shared experience is what makes the job so special and so fulfilling.
How is Radiography impacting healthcare today?
A day rarely goes by without news reports of another ‘ground-breaking’ new treatment for cancer. This constant focus on innovation can sometimes overshadow the reality that for the majority of patients, radiotherapy and surgery offer the best outcomes. Radiotherapy is the workhorse of cancer care with nearly half of people receiving radiation treatment at some point in their pathway. Highly focused modern techniques mean we are successfully treating more people than ever. We are equipped with a vast array of tools including photons, protons, gamma rays, electrons and radioactive isotopes. This year has seen the opening of the UCLH Proton Beam Centre offering world-class treatment for paediatric, brain and head and neck cancers. Roles are also changing and expanding to meet the new challenges of a modern health service. We have consultant radiographers managing their own patient workloads, researchers focused on refining the latest techniques and advanced practitioners offering expert support in specialist roles.
What’s the most exciting development in the field?
There is growing recognition that the one-size-fits-all approach to care is no longer enough. Treatment and support are increasingly being tailored to individual patients. Radiotherapy delivery is adapted and modified from day-to-day, minute-to-minute and even second-to-second. Plans are modified and adjusted in real time to track tumour and organ movement. And sophisticated new imaging techniques allow us to visualise targets more precisely than ever. This commitment to personalised care is also being seen in the support we offer to patients before, during and after treatment. There is an increasing focus on prehabilitation, rehabilitation and the management of long-term side effects. Support services are growing and adapting to ensure that improvements in patient survival outcomes are matched by improvements in quality of life.

Students Showcase Research at 3MT Competition
KENNESAW, Ga. | Apr 12, 2024
By Tracy Gaudlip
On Thursday, April 4, 2024, the Graduate College held its 9th annual 3-Minute Thesis competition (3MT), tasking master’s and doctoral students with presenting their research to a non-specialist audience within a strict three-minute timeframe.
William Reed, a master’s in exercise science student, clinched the top spot with his presentation titled “Kinetic and Kinematic Effects of Unilateral Flag Carrying on Referee Sprinting and Agility Performance.” Yongshuai Wu, currently pursuing a master’s in information technology, secured both the Runner-Up position and the People’s Choice award for his presentation titled “Autonomous Robots for Inventory Tasks in Unstructured Environments via Zero-Shot Imitation Learning.”
Reed’s presentation centered on the differences between normal sprinting motions and that of “flag-carrying” soccer referees. From his own experience he explained, “We referees have a distinct lack of research around us in comparison to the players we officiate, so finding a way to add to that limited research base was the goal. Referees receive very little assistance when it comes to specialized training, so working to analyze the intricacies of our own performance expectations led us to this premise of running with only one moving arm, as the flag must be carried in the other.” He added that while there is some research on the effects of restricting both arms in track athletes, none have looked at the effects of running with only one arm moving.
In addition to the 1080Sprint machine, he used tests standardized by soccer governing bodies to determine what kind of change flag-carrying has on running. He tracked kinetic data for each test and compared the tests within individuals.
Now that the competition is over, Reed said he “feels a sense of calm” and is looking forward to the next challenge.
Wu’s research delves into robotic reasoning, which involves training robots to mimic human behavior. To evaluate their methods, he explained that they chose robot radio-frequency identification (RFID) because it’s a challenging task for robots. This technology uses radio waves to identify and track tags attached to objects and is used in applications such as inventory management.
“The concept of RFID inventory is that each product will have an RFID tag, which can be scanned by a reader within a short distance. This is why we need to train the robot to approach those places where the products are located.”
Wu explained that grasping robotic reasoning can be daunting for those unfamiliar with robotics. “Summarizing this into a 3-minute presentation is tough,” he said. He opted to focus on key milestones rather than narrate the entire journey, and it turned out to be effective.
Reed was awarded $1,000 for his first-place presentation, while Wu earned $750 for second place and an additional $350 for winning the people’s choice award.
Dr. Amy Buddie, the Director of Undergraduate Research, along with Dr. Karin Scarpinato, the Vice President of Research, and Dr. Jessica Rudd, an alumna of KSU’s Ph.D. program, and a past 3MT champion who currently serves as Senior Data Engineer and Technical Lead at Intuit Mailchimp, were the judges for the competition.

UNC-Chapel Hill graduate programs ranked among best in nation
U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 “Best Graduate Schools” list named multiple Carolina graduate degree programs in the top 10, including UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at No. 1.
Numerous UNC-Chapel Hill graduate programs received high rankings – 20 were among the top 10 in the nation in their respective categories – as part of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Graduate Schools” list.
For the third time in a row (2016, 2020 and 2024), UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is the top pharmacy school in the U.S. The rankings are based on a survey of peers from accredited pharmacy schools across the country and are published every four years.
The Gillings School of Global Public Health was ranked second out of 213 schools and programs of public health in the U.S. for the seventh consecutive rankings period. The Gillings School has also maintained its position as the top public school of public health and has been ranked among the top schools and programs of public health by U.S. News since the magazine first ranked public health schools in 1987. U.S. News & World Report does not rank all graduate programs each year.
“Carolina’s graduate programs are exceptional, and it’s no surprise that our schools are ranked so highly among peer institutions by U.S. News and World Report, as well as other measures,” said UNC-Chapel Hill Interim Chancellor Lee H. Roberts. “Carolina is always proud to be recognized for our dedication to a world-class education. Every one of our graduate programs contributes to making us the leading public research university.”
Altogether, 23 programs increased their rankings, including multiple programs in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Education, Kenan-Flagler Business School and UNC School of Law.
“These rankings represent the hard work of our faculty, staff and students who are dedicated to moving Carolina forward through their incredible efforts each day,” said UNC-Chapel Hill Provost Chris Clemens. “It is gratifying to see this public recognition of their commitment to the mission of our graduate programs in research, teaching and public service. Even more than in the rankings, the proof of their work is the quality of our students and our passionate alumni who lead in so many fields.”
The School of Social Work moved up three spots in the latest rankings to a tie for fourth overall and is tied for second among public universities.
This year marks the first time since U.S. News & World Report began ranking law schools in 1987 that UNC School of Law has reached No. 20 out of 196 law schools. The UNC School of Law is also the seventh-ranked public law school.
Additional UNC-Chapel Hill rankings for 2024 follow.
Please note: Not all graduate programs are ranked by U.S. News & World Report every year. For a complete list of rankings for UNC-Chapel Hill, visit the U.S. News & World Report website .

Travis and Jason Kelce ‘graduate’ from college during a surprise ceremony in Cincinnati
The Kelce brothers took their podcast to their alma mater this week and the live show ended with a surprise — a long-overdue college graduation ceremony at the University of Cincinnati.
Travis and Jason Kelce returned to the university Thursday night to record a live episode of their podcast, “New Heights,” in front of thousands of fans at the Fifth Third Arena.
The live taping concluded with a surprise graduation ceremony for the football stars, during which they were both dressed in the classic graduation cap and gown.
University of Cincinnati President Neville Pinto — also in traditional graduation garb — presented the brothers with their diplomas, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported . Their parents, Donna and Ed Kelce, and UC athletic director John Cunningham joined them onstage for the mini ceremony.
After hugging Pinto but before grabbing his diploma, Travis Kelce downed an entire beer as “Fight for Your Right” by The Beastie Boys blared over the arena’s speakers.
Jason Kelce attended UC from 2006 to 2010 and Travis Kelce from 2008 to 2012, according to the university . The brothers played football for the school and shared the field for two years while their educations overlapped.
According to the Enquirer, Jason Kelce earned a marketing degree, but wasn’t able to make it to the commencement ceremony, and Travis Kelce finished his outstanding credits to complete his degree in interdisciplinary studies from the College of Arts and Sciences in 2022.
“A surprise commencement we’ll never forget,” the Cincinnati Bearcats said on social media alongside a carousel of images from the event.
“Congratulations to Travis and Jason on (finally) picking up their diplomas!”
