Thanks to the enormous success of such films as “ Wonder Woman ” and the recent entries in the “ Star Wars ” franchise, Hollywood seems to at long last be learning that big-scale genre films can be centered on female characters and still do exceedingly well at the box office. The immediate effects of this belated realization—ranging from the increasingly impotent whining from fragile fanboys threatened by such developments, to Marvel finally moving forward with a long-overdue Black Widow standalone feature—have been salutary, to be sure. With any luck, however, perhaps this recent discovery that, to quote Danny Trejo in “Anchorman,” “Ladies can do stuff now,” will finally inspire the industry as a whole to get off its collective duff and at long last give Gina Carano something worthy to do.

Carano, you will recall, was the former mixed martial artist whom Steven Soderbergh picked to star in his quirky 2011 thriller “ Haywire .” Admittedly, she was not exactly the most polished actress imaginable but her palpable screen charisma helped her hold her own against the likes of Michael Fassbender , Antonio Banderas , Ewan McGregor and Michael Douglas in the dramatic scenes, and her undeniable physical presence allowed her to utterly dominate the more action-heavy elements. It seemed as if a star had been born but the industry didn’t quite seem to know what to do with her. Instead of becoming the female equivalent of Dwayne “ The Rock ” Johnson, her subsequent film career saw her either get lost in the shuffle in the large-scale likes of “ Fast & Furious 6 ” and “ Deadpool ” or in instantly forgettable VOD fodder that make equally little use of her talents.

You do not need to be much of a student of the cinematic arts to figure out which category her latest film, “Scorched Earth,” fits into. This is a cheap and uninspired hybrid of the post-apocalyptic action thriller and Western genres that feels like it could have been made a quarter-century ago without any significant difference in the end product. This one is set in a not-too-distant future where Earth has been nearly destroyed by global warming and the few survivors struggle to make a new life in a world where water filters and powdered silver (used for the needed air filters) are the most valuable of commodities. Carano plays Atticus Gage, a bad-ass bounty hunter who tracks down “eco-criminals” guilty of crimes such as driving the few remaining gas-guzzlers. One day, Atticus learns of a compound filled to the brim with criminal types and led by the power-hungry Thomas Jackson ( Ryan Robbins ), all of whom each have huge bounties on them. Thanks to a vague resemblance to a notorious criminal type that she has just killed, Atticus hits upon a plan to gain entrance to the compound, gain Jackson’s trust and then take him down for the reward. This mission starts off easily enough but is soon complicated by the suspicions of Jackson’s right-hand man ( Dean S. Jagger ) and the presence of Jackson’s girlfriend ( Stephanie Bennett ), who reminds Atticus of her own sister, whom she lost years ago when she was kidnapped by ... ah, you’ll figure it out.

The end result is pretty much what you might expect—a work so desultory that you wonder how all involved managed to work up the energy and enthusiasm to make it to the set each day. It is hard to decide what is more threadbare—the screenplay that consists entirely of elements lifted wholesale from other and better films or the sets that are so tacky-looking that even Roger Corman might have suggested a modest upgrade in cost and quality. If forced to choose, I would have to go with the former because there is not a single flash of inspiration to be had from writers Kevin Leeson and Bobby Mort , whose combined credits run the gamut from “Mongolian Death Worm” to “The Colbert Report.” Take the bad guy—the singular element that most films of this sort live or die upon. Here, our villain is as resolutely non-menacing as can be—he claims to be inspired by the example of Simon Bolivar but more closely recalls a lower-rent version of the bad guy from that other redoubtable post-apocalyptic/Western hybrid, “ The Postman .” As for the action beats, they are about as gripping and exciting as one might expect when entrusting a film of this type to the like of Peter Howitt , the auteur of such white-knuckle cinema as “ Sliding Doors ,” “AntiTrust” and “ Johnny English .”

As for Carano, she is, inevitably, the only interesting thing about “Scorched Earth.” But not even her efforts amount to much in the end—how much difference can one person with their star presence and physical skills make in the service of a screenplay, director and supporting cast that fail to make any real use of them? Watching her is fun for a little bit, but seeing her talents thoroughly wasted becomes more depressing than anything else.

Film Review: ‘Scorched Earth’

Peter Howitt's post-apocalyptic Western gives Gina Carano the opportunity to ride tall and shoot straight.

'Scorched Earth' Review

Equal parts 1960s-style Spaghetti Western pastiche and ’80s-style “Mad Max” knockoff, “Scorched Earth” is the sort of divertingly hokey post-apocalyptic B-movie that would have amused undiscriminating Blockbuster Video renters a generation ago, and now might pass muster as the pilot for a weekly SyFy series.

Former MMA pugilist Gina Carano , who earned her spurs as an action hero in Steven Soderbergh’s “Haywire,” is well cast as a formidable femme variation on Clint Eastwood’s Man With No Name bounty hunter. And the film itself strikes so many echoes of “A Fistful of Dollars,” it conceivably could inspire a new drinking game among genre aficionados: Each time you view an image, or hear a line, reminiscent of the Sergio Leone classic, it’s time to down a shot of whiskey. Yee-haw.

Directed by Peter Howitt (whose debut feature, “Sliding Doors” (1998), remains an unfulfilled promise) and scripted by Bobby Mort and Kevin Leeson, “Scorched Earth” is set somewhere near the midpoint of the 21 st century, after ecological upheavals have wiped out huge swathes of the world’s population, and left survivors chronically dependent on masks filtered with powdered silver to breathe the polluted air.

Anyone still driving fossil fuel-burning vehicles is considered an outlaw, wanted dead or alive. Attica Gage (Carano) makes her living bringing varmints to justice, one way or the other. But when she sets her sights on Jackson (Ryan Robbins), a smug Wild West-style town boss who wants to employ slave labor in a silver mine, she’s motivated less by bounty collecting than score settling.

Popular on Variety

Carano rides tall, figuratively as well as literally, and shoots straight in a retro-futuristic world where heroes travel on horseback, wagon trains are equipped with machine-gun turrets, and smooth-talking bad guys cheat at poker in saloons that employ sad-eyed songbirds as performers and fringe benefits. John Hannah provides moral support and, when necessary, life-supporting assistance as Doc, Gage’s mentor and occasional sidekick. His spiritedly sarcastic give-and-take with Carano suggests that, if this VOD-ready B-movie really did spawn a SyFy series, the show might be worth sporadic binge viewing, to savor their bickering as father figure and problem child.

“Am I dead?” she asks after being stuffed into a coffin and tossed off a cliff. “Not anymore,” he replies after nursing her back to health. So, of course, she continues her ride down the vengeance trail. Because, hey, a woman’s got to do what a woman’s got to do.

Scorched Earth - Movie Review

Scorched Earth  review

What’s this?

Sometimes, a name is all you need.

Scorched Earth is a post-apocalyptic Western – the title is literal. In it, Gina Carano plays a bounty hunter named Attica Gage. That’s it. Review’s over. All you need to know about Scorched Earth – the plot, the tone, the quality – is all implicit in that name. Attica Gage. What were her parents thinking?

Fancy being a bit more specific?

Imagine Scorched Earth as being 45% 60s Spaghetti Western, 45% 80s direct-to-video Mad Max knockoff, and 10% utter stupidity. Carano is relatively well-cast as a kind of Woman With No Name, except she has a name, and it’s ridiculous. But Scorched Earth takes so many cues from Sergio Leone’s “Dollars Trilogy” that spotting all the images and lines that pay homage to it becomes more fun that the actual movie.

Although, to be fair, sucking the moisture out of Clint Eastwood’s dirty desert poncho would also be more fun than this movie.

What’s it about?

Set somewhere near the midpoint of the 21 st century, this scorched earth has been beset by ecological upheavals that have wiped out huge swathes of the world’s population. The few survivors are dependent on masks filtered with powdered silver to breathe the charred air. Anyone who still drives gas-guzzlers is considered an outlaw; wanted dead or alive.

Gage collects these bounties. But for the purposes of an action movie, she sets her sights on a compound filled to the brim with wrong-‘uns. They’re led by a power-hungry Wild West-style town boss, Thomas Jackson (Ryan Robbins), who wants to employ slave labour in a silver mine.

Let me guess: this is more personal for Gage than just another bounty?

Got it in one. Gage’s vague plan – cooked up with her mentor and occasional sidekick, Doc (John Hannah) – is to infiltrate Jackson’s gang and dismantle it from the inside. Which goes well, at first. But the scheme is swiftly complicated by Jackson’s nosey right-hand man (Dean S. Jagger) and his girlfriend (Stephanie Bennett), who reminds Gage of a convenient tortured backstory.

movie reviews scorched earth

So, how is Scorched Earth ?

About as desultory as you might expect. The script, by Bobby Mort and Kevin Leeson, is threadbare at best and intellectually insulting at worst. The point – whatever that might be – is meandered around, and director Peter Howitt, who has helmed such outstanding action blockbusters as, erm… *checks IMDb*, Johnny English , can’t figure out how to steer his actors towards it. The production design is so cheap and low-quality that you never get the sense that the film has been shot anywhere other than in someone’s back garden, and the work overall is so lacking in energy, charisma and enthusiasm that I wouldn’t have been surprised if the thing just shut off halfway through to save everyone involved the embarrassment.

Isn’t Carano good, at least?

Watching her is fun for a little while, but what can you do? The former mixed martial arts star has only been properly directed once, in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire , from 2011. Since then she has been lost in the lumbering machinery of big-budget franchise fare like Fast & Furious 6 and Deadpool , or had her meagre acting talents squandered in comical VOD fodder like the god-awful Extraction . I like her, and I still feel that her physical presence and abilities would lend themselves well to a vehicle built around her – much like Haywire was – but a polished actress she most certainly is not.

Scorched Earth

By Bobby LePire | May 19, 2018

Mad Max was released in 1979 (1980 in North America) and since then has spawned three sequels, multiple comics, and has influenced most, if not all, desert-set post-apocalyptic action-thrillers. So when a film in that genre is released, it is not much of a surprise that it echoes aspects of that popular Australian franchise. The question then is, can the new movie overcome that to still stand as original and engaging on its own terms?

“…shoot first, survive however you can lawlessness.”

In the case of Scorched Earth , the answer is yes, mostly! Set years after the world has been reduced to barren wastelands, the few pockets of civilization left are terrorized by roving gangs of bandits, with the worst being Jackson (Ryan Robbins) and his men. Merciless bounty hunter Gage (Gina Carano) hatches a plan to infiltrate the gang and take them down. To do this, she disguises herself as her latest kill, Chavo (Luvia Petersen), whom only she and Doc (John Hannah) know to be dead.

Peter Howitt has had a long career in Hollywood, as an actor, writer, and director, which is his job here. He orchestrates several exciting action scenes, which keep the movie chugging along at a steady pace. The standout here is the opening shootout between Chavo and Gage, as the editing splits between the two with each bullet and bit of dialogue. It is a fun introduction to both the badassness of Gage and the rough and tumble world. This world has a real, lived-in feel to it, allowing the audience to easily buy into the harsh lives of the people that inhabit it. It is true that the costumes and vehicles have a clear Mad Max -vibe, they do look cool and suit the shoot first, survive however you can lawlessness that is presented.

movie reviews scorched earth

“…the few pockets of civilization left are terrorized by roving gangs of bandits.”

While the movie does start off with a bang, literally, with the Chavo/ Gage shootout, it then slows down immensely for a good twenty minutes. That time is clunky, exposition-heavy dialogue, that only sometimes work. Setting up the way the government, such as it is, still functions, how bounty hunting works, and the most dangerous places to live are essential for the audience, but the way it is presented here is not entirely smooth. Once all that is out of the way, things start to pick up considerably, and when the characters are just idly chatting among themselves, the dialogue is sharp and interesting.

Carano continually proves herself an exciting and formidable screen presence with each new movie she stars in. Scorched Earth , is no exception, as she commands the screen with ease, and handles the action beautifully. John Hannah is almost unrecognizable under a grizzled five o’clock shadow and being more serious than expected. Not to imply he is bad, as he is quite effective in the action-heavy moments and brings a heart to the movie that invests the viewer from his first scene. Stephanie Bennett is Melena, a woman forced into service by Jackson, and she is electric. She portrays the character’s conflicted and scared nature very well.

movie reviews scorched earth

“…several exciting action scenes.”

As the villainous Jackson, Ryan Robbins is only okay. It is clear he is having fun throughout, but he never comes across as intimidating as the story would have you believe. His monologue about his fallen idol, the military leader he modeled himself off of, doesn’t have the creepy, megalomaniacal edge it requires to make that sequence work. Instead, he sounds like a history buff reporting on his favorite subject, a little too eager, a little too happy. Most of his underlings fare better, especially Patrick Sabongui as yes-man Womack and Nathan Mitchell as the lecherous Zee.

Scorched Earth won’t win any points for originality, but when it works, it is tremendous fun. Bolstered by a strong lead performance from Carano, great action set pieces, and impressive world-building, this is one action-thriller that delivers on both of those fronts.

Gina has proven to be a solid action star, she is strong enough as a actress that I look for her name on movies when I am hunting. She really came into her own in the first “Deadpool”. I thought she rocked it out in “In the Blood”. She definitely is in the Zoe Bell and Amy Johnston level of women bad a***s! Good review Bobby!

movie reviews scorched earth

‘ Scorched Earth ‘ is a 2018 dystopian Western action film directed by Peter Howitt and made by the production company Lighthouse Pictures.

In the future, a calamity called the Cloud Fall has led to Earth’s atmosphere becoming toxic and caused society to collapse with humanity living similarly to the days of the Old West. The surviving humans rely on silver for commerce and air purifiers called tabs to survive a disease called the Black Lung. Gage ( Gina Carano ) is a bounty hunter looking for the thief Chavo (Luvia Petersen). She tortures a thug named Womack (Patrick Sabongui) for the info and manages to kill Chavo. Taking her body to the corrupt Sheriff Grubbs (Patrick Gilmore) for the bounty, she learns from her mentor Doc (John Hannah) of a town called Defiance. There, the mercenary Thomas Jackson (Ryan Robbins) has created a haven for criminals and has taken control of a silver mine. The reward for him and his lieutenant Lear (Dean S. Jagger) is high. Gage takes Chavo’s identity and heads to Defiance to get a piece of the action, but when she arrives, she spots a scar on Jackson and realizes he is the one who murdered Gage’s sister. This changes from a simple bounty to a desire for vengeance and a showdown.

The film is definitely a b-movie with production values being slightly lower than you would find in a blockbuster and you can find different themes from other movies of similar genres. It also has a few slow points in the plot that make it drag at times. That being said, I actually enjoyed this movie.

Gina Carano is perfect for this type of movie, bringing her usual action skills and strength to the character of Gage. The rest of the cast also does a good job of bringing the story together. John Hannah was, of course, a sharp actor in the sort of mentor role. He was excellent for the part and had some of the best lines.

As for the plot, it definitely keeps you invested. What starts as a simple desire to earn some money soon devolves into a quest for vengeance. At first, I did not like that twist as I felt Jackson was an arrogant enough villain to fight, but I soon realized it was caused Gage to go off her plan of taking him down. It also humanized Gage, going from a generic action heroine into someone you can root for to the end.

Bottom line, Scorched Earth is a decent action film that keeps you hooked with its unlikely hero and interesting premise. It does have its weaknesses, but I see a future as a cult classic.

The next time someone tells you the Western is dead you can hit him with a big old bag of dystopian science fiction movies. The Western aesthetic has been so thoroughly absorbed by science fiction that the quality ranges from Oscar worthy features like Logan and Mad Max: Fury Road to the SyFy channel’s short-lived series “Defiance.” The latest movie to employ this mash-up is the low budget and very pedestrian Scorched Earth .

Directed by Peter Howitt and written by Kevin Leeson and Bobby Mort, the visual direction and screenplay compete for the designation of dullest aspect of the film. Howitt’s camerawork is uninspired, draining the action sequences of any vitality while Leeson and Mort try to shoehorn some silly scientific exposition into a story of frontier justice.

In a montage of stock footage and a voiceover a la the opening of The Road Warrior it is explained that the environment has finally collapsed. If you breathe without a respirator, you get black lung. If you drink water without a purifying tablet you get poisoned. Given these conditions there are two items of value in this world: the water purifying tablets and powdered silver, the main component of the respirators. Society has devolved to a pre-industrial age. It is the Wild West, but the deserts are wastelands and the bad guys burn fossil fuels.

The hero of the story is a bounty hunter called Gage (Gina Carano). She is the best she is at what she does, capturing bad guys and getting paid in powdered silver and purifying tablets. If she does some incidental good like rescuing a group of pilgrims from getting captured by those who would enslave them, so be it. But Gage’s main concern is Gage. She cracks wise to everyone, but saves her best lines for her one friend, Doc (John Hannah). That there is no lack of leather, cowboy hats, guns and bullets is the most believable aspect of this future America.

Gage is getting by, chasing her targets down on horseback, when news reaches her of a mother lode of a bounty. A villain named Thomas Jackson (Ryan Robbins) has started a settlement called Defiance. In his town, bounty hunters get strung up at the border as a warning, and everybody works for him. Jackson raids other settlements, works a slave trade and brokers in the usual nefariousness. He is also the one personal score Gage has left. When society collapsed, Jackson was responsible for the death of Gage’s sister. She intends on vengeance made all the sweeter by the bounty she’ll collect. Of course, things do not go as planned, but that’s to be expected.

While Scorched Earth unfolds in obvious ways and takes turns that are below expectations, its one saving grace is its headliner. There haven’t been enough leading roles since Carano made her debut in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire , which is a pity. She has the presence of a star and the martial arts expertise that should make her the face of bigger superhero franchises, her stint in Deadpool notwithstanding. Big budget moviemaking’s loss is Howitt’s gain. Like any movie star worthy of the designation, Carano keeps you watching despite the material, especially when engaged in some verbal sparring with John Hannah. Every hero needs a good villain and Ryan Robbins comports himself well as the mustache twirling Thomas Jackson. The rest of the cast does what they can with the little they have to work with.

When viewing a movie of this budget, watchability is the minimum expectation while a pleasant surprise or two is the hope. Scorched Earth strives to reach the former with the hard work of its cast. The dullness of the effort stems from its insistence on being a hybrid Western. When mash-ups are executed well, the genres being blended invigorate each other. When done poorly, it becomes an exhausting exercise in dueling clichés. No genre ever really dies. They just lie dormant until some makers come along to revitalize them. For the Western to rise again it might be time to retire making it the failsafe mash-up for dystopia.

10 biggest ark: survival ascended scorched earth changes, new dinos & differences.

There are a ton of changes that have come to Scorched Earth in ASA, some of which will change the game forever and make it worth revisiting.

  • New Scorched Earth update for Ark: Survival Ascended brings dangerous sandstorms and hot temperatures, changing gameplay dynamics.
  • Fasolasuchus and Oasisaur are introduced in free update, with challenging taming mechanics and unique abilities for players to explore.
  • Wyvern and Oasis Caves have been added, providing buildable areas with unique features and loot opportunities for players in PvP environments.

Ark: Survival Ascended Scorched Earth's release brought with it a host of new updates that fundamentally change how the game is played. Much like the original Ark: Survival Evolved , Scorched Earth introduces a new desert biome filled with hazards like sandstorms that can significantly impact the environment, as well as super-hot temperatures that can dry out any adventurer without a good supply of water.

In addition to adding a host of new creatures and dinosaurs , the Scorched Earth free update introduces new things that weren't in the previous 2016 version of the release for ASE . While some of these are useful QoL updates and enhancements, others are more significant, like the introduction of the Fasolasuchus & Oasisaur.

Ark: Survival Ascended Update Improves Your Character Ahead Of Scorched Earth Release

10 fasolasuchus is a brand new creature, added to asa scorched earth.

With a new knockout mechanic required to tame, the Fasolasuchus is the latest creature addition to ASA and can act as a fast-moving mount in the sand . Gliding under the surface of the ground as if it were swimming, its powerful Sandstorm ability creates a whirlpool that can catch other players or creatures in its radius and applies a movement speed debuff as well as a dismounting mechanic.

Taming the new sand mount, the Fasolasuchus, is no easy task. It requires exploding C4 over it and then riding it into a rock to knock it out . Afterward, feeding it Exceptional Kibble will enable the player to tame it. This challenging process is sure to challenge a few people trying to tame the sought-after creature in Scorched Earth PvP servers.

9 New Cave Systems

Wyvern & oasis caves.

Filled with flowing rivers of molten lava, the new Wyvern trench cave is a fairly large, buildable area that has various rooms and hidden areas . There's also the added benefit of being able to farm Wyvern eggs pretty easily for those who decide to build in it. Being able to hold this large, extensive network makes for a really good PvP location as well due to the natural Wyvern defenses.

The new Wyvern Cave can be found at Latitude 59.1 and Longitude 16.4.

The Oasis Cave is a new, hidden location in ASA found south of the Red Obelisk in Scorched Earth , under the water in a blue oasis under some rocky cliffs. A good PvP build location; it'll require characters to swim underwater to gain access to the cave, so it's important to have a scuba mask or some other way to stay underwater for a long time. Once inside, it's a fairly large open location with verdant trees and waterfalls. Another buildable cave, tons of little sub-areas can fortify the base.

Ark: Survive The Night Transforms Ark: Survival Ascended Into The Perfect Horror Game

8 oasisaur is a dlc addition, a controversial inclusion.

The Oasisaur is a new ASA addition and a controversial one at that, as it was included in the paid Bob's Tall Tales DLC in ASA that released for $29.99 — causing many to claim that the new title is now pay-to-win. Interestingly, Oasisaur is on servers and viewable for everyone, even without the paid DLC , but it's only tameable for those who pay for Bob's Tall Tales .

Oasisaur cannot be bred, nor can it be transferred to another server.

The Oasisaur is a massive moving platform that can act as a mobile base . Not only can it hover over the ground, but it also passively produces materials. Lastly, the restorative pool on its back can be used to revive knocked-out tames, making the argument that this beast is indeed pay-to-win a hard one to refute.

7 Desert Loot Crates & Beacons Update

Loot beacon & crate locations are different.

To the dismay of many relying on old maps for loot crates in Evolved , ASA has updated loot crates found in the desert . Although this isn't a substantial change in terms of actual mechanics from The Island loot crates, it is a big change that will throw off ARK veterans trying out the newer title.

That said, the loot tables for beacons and crates have changed from ASE , and the quality of loot found in these rewards are better. Completed, high-quality items are obtainable from them, which is a much-welcomed improvement to most.

Every Alpha Creature In Ark: Survival Ascended (So Far), Ranked

6 jerboas can be caught at higher levels, most trusty shoulder pet.

Scorched Earth 's introduction of Jerboas was something many awaited upon its release, but along with them comes useful updates. In the new iteration of the game, Jerboas now have wild levels , meaning they can be caught at a higher level. In Ark: Survival Evolved , Jerboas could only be tamed at level one, but now its carry weight and stats can be naturally higher when caught.

Jerboas, on top of being incredibly cute, has a lot of utility in the arid deserts of Scorched Earth. Capable of alerting someone of changing weather patterns and upcoming storms , it can also be used as a helpful storage device to carry more materials. Though less useful on The Island, Jerboas are a good tame to have in Scorched Earth. Now that they can be caught at higher levels, they are more durable and can carry more weight, making them even better options.

When a Jerboa wags its tail, a lightning storm is coming; barking means that a sandstorm is coming, and sniffing means that rain is imminent.

5 Several QoL Updates For Key Creatures

Improvements on popular tames.

In addition to the new content added to ASA Scorched Earth , changes to key creatures like Morellatops, Rock Elementals, and the Phoenix have made them easier and more viable to use. In the case of the Morellatops, it has the ability to irrigate Crop Plots for farming, making it more useful tame overall.

The Phoenix and Rock Elemental , on the other hand, have received mobility updates that make riding them much easier . In the case of the Rock Elemental, horizontal movement is now possible, and in the case of the Phoenix, it's now possible to land with one on the ground.

10 Coolest Creatures To Tame In Ark: Survival Ascended

4 new immersive environmental effects, more powerful storms.

One of the most obvious initial differences in Scorched Earth is the enhanced environmental effects that have come with ASA. Sandstorms and electric storms are pretty frequent and have big effects on visibility , which will affect how people react in PvP and PvE encounters.

Wearing desert goggles will significantly improve view distance and visibility during a sandstorm.

These new storm effects are also much more vivid than they were in Ark: Survival Evolved and show what might be in store for the upcoming Ark 2 . These types of environmental effects add even more flavor to the game and threat, even though many PvP players would likely prefer them to be turned off.

3 Procoptodon Are More Plentiful

An ancestor to the kangaroo.

In terms of ground mounts, not many other tames in Ark: Survival Ascended can match the massive jump distance and swift speed of a Procoptodon . Although it's not a great combat tame, the ability for the Kangaroo ancestor to also carry other players or smaller tames in its pouch , along with its great mobility, make it a must-own creature in the arid deserts of Scorched Earth , especially with increased heat. While the creature was possible to find before, it is now much more plentiful in the new area.

Holding down the jump button will charge the leap, causing the tame to jump over even longer distances.

Because the Procoptodon is so fast, it lends itself well to the enhanced storms that occur in the game, especially in groups of two, as the secondary player can hop into the creature's pouch for a quick getaway. On top of that, while not powerful, its kick ability does have a knockback effect , which can prove useful in situations where crowd control and escape are necessary.

2 New Wild Babies

A host of new babies added to the game.

In addition to adding to immersion and making the game feel more real, the cute children of terrifying ASA dinosaurs have gotten an update, with even more baby creature species being added to Scorched Earth . It's not only Scorched Earth that has gotten expanded babies; it's also creatures and dinosaurs on The Island in Ark: Survival Ascended .

New wild babies include Scorched Earth creatures like Jerboas, Carnotaurus, and Equus, as well as other dinos like the Dilophosaurus, Allosaurus, and Carbonemys. These new baby variants will make catching higher-level tames much easier for breeding purposes and are an overall welcome addition to the game.

10 Coolest Ark: Survival Ascended Dinosaurs, Ranked

1 wyverns have been re-added, a challenging task worth the reward.

Although capturing a Wyvern egg and incubating it is a long process that requires acquiring Wyvern Milk and navigating around the terrifying flying beasts, doing so is well worth the reward for one of the best flying mounts in Ark. Coming in three different variations, it's necessary to travel to the dangerous Wyvern cavern and steal Wyvern eggs from nests.

The Wyvern comes in three variations: poison, fire, and lightning.

Useful for picking up other tames, along with powerful crowd control and damage abilities, the Wyvern is one of the fastest flying mounts in the entire game. Its addition is certainly one of the more welcome changes to Ark: Survival Ascended Scorched Earth .

Maddow Blog | Lara Trump touts ‘scorched earth’ agenda after 2024 elections

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Now that Lara Trump is helping lead the Republican National Committee, the former president’s daughter-in-law appears to have made election denialism a priority for the party. But as it turns out, that’s not the RNC co-chair’s only focus.

Consider the message Lara Trump recently shared with an audience about her father-in-law:

A video of the comments suggests she wasn’t kidding.

Lara Trump: “It’s 4 years of scorched earth when Donald Trump retakes the White House.” pic.twitter.com/be0oFuDwH2 — PatriotTakes 🇺🇸 (@patriottakes) April 18, 2024

So, as Lara Trump sees it, powerful forces are working to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office, not because they disagree with him or his vision, but because they’re afraid that the Republican will abuse his powers and execute a retaliatory agenda against his perceived foes.

Those fears, Lara Trump suggested, are justified — because her father-in-law will go “scorched earth” starting in 2025.

The RNC co-chair’s rhetoric, for what it’s worth, is very easy to believe. Indeed, Donald Trump hasn’t been especially subtle about his authoritarian-style ambitions in a prospective second term.

As regular readers know , presumptive Republican nominee, with little subtlety, has touted a radical vision for the United States — up to and including his stated intentions to create a “Day One” dictatorship after taking office.

Under the former president’s preferred approach, he would also pardon politically aligned violent criminals, seize control of government departments and agencies that have historically operated with independence, enact radical anti-immigration plans , use government powers to crack down on journalists , and hire right-wing lawyers who would be positioned to help Trump politicize federal law enforcement and exact revenge against his perceived political foes.

And did I mention that Trump has argued that presidents should be allowed to commit crimes with impunity? Because he’s done that, too .

In other words, when Lara Trump boasts that her father-in-law will focus on retribution and retaliation if voters return him to the White House, there’s no reason to doubt her sincerity.

This is, however, a deeply strange message to share with the public as the general-election phase of the 2024 race takes shape.

As New York magazine’s Jon Chait explained , “Presidential candidates usually promise that everybody will be happy if they win. One of the historically unusual aspects of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is that he is promising to punish his political enemies in the event he gains power. ‘I am your warrior, I am your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution,’ he vowed last year.”

His daughter-in-law is pushing an eerily similar message from her influential position at the RNC.

Voters looking for a candidate who cares far more about revenge than governing have a clear choice.
