Formerly MetroPCS, Metro by T-Mobile launched its service in 2002 and expanded across the U.S. In 2013, T-Mobile acquired MetroPCS. At the time of purchase, T-Mobile had 32 million subscribers and absorbed MetroPCS’ nine million subscribers in the merger. Since that period, Metro by T-Mobile has provided customers with affordable prepaid plans that include coverage on the T-Mobile network. While Metro by T-Mobile’s plans did not rank in our Best Cell Phone Plans of 2024, the carrier has appeared in our ratings in the past, and we have updated this guide to reflect the most current information.

Metro by T-Mobile is T-Mobile’s prepaid brand and uses T-Mobile’s 5G network. While the company does have lower-priced data-capped plans (2 GB and 10 GB of data a month) available, Metro by T-Mobile’s featured plans offer unlimited calling, texting, and high-speed data.

Like T-Mobile’s “On Us” offerings, Metro also offers additional services at no additional cost to unlimited plan customers. All unlimited plans come with free Google One storage and either 5 or 15 GB of mobile hotspot data. Subscribers to Metro’s Unlimited Plus plan also receive free Amazon Prime membership as well.

Metro also offers a promotion that offers its basic unlimited plan at a $10 a month discount if you switch from another carrier.

How Much Does the Metro by T-Mobile Cell Phone Plans Cost?

Metro by T-Mobile has two unlimited plans , beginning at $50 per month for a single line. , hHowever those who switch from another carrier are eligible for the basic unlimited plan at a $10 monthly discount.

The Unlimited plan offers 5 GB of hotspot data and 100 GB Google One storage for $50 per month. On multi-line plans, lines two through four are an additional $30 per month, with the fifth line for an additional $10 per month.

The Unlimited Plus plan bumps the hotspot data allotment to 15 GB per month and offers subscribers a free Amazon Prime membership in addition to Google One. One line is $60 per month, with the second, third, and fifth lines an additional $30 per month. On four-line plans, the fourth line is free.

On all unlimited plans, video streaming is capped at 480p resolution, and subscribers that use over 35 GB of data per month might see their download speeds slowed during periods of heavy network use.

What Cell Phone Plans Are Available From Metro by T-Mobile?

Two data-capped plans and two unlimited plans are available, starting at $30 per month for a single line with 2 GB of data. The price increases from $10 per month for each better plan (10 GB, unlimited with 5 GB hotspot, and unlimited with 15 GB hotspot) to $60 per month for the best plan.

On the 2GB data plan, no additional services are provided, however stepping up to the 10 GB plan gets you “Music Unlimited,” which allows you to stream from over 40 music services without it counting against your monthly data. The basic unlimited plan offers 100 GB of Google One storage, while the Unlimited Plus plan adds in a free Amazon Prime membership.

How To Upgrade Your Cell Phone Plan

Metro by T-Mobile allows you to change your phone plan through one of three methods: by visiting a local Metro store, by dialing *611 on your phone or calling 1-888-8METRO8 (863-8768), or by visiting your online account.

For device upgrades, customers are eligible every 180 days for any promotions or rebates offered to new customers. Any upgrades within this 180 day period will require the subscriber to pay the full retail price for the device.

How Much Do Metro by T-Mobile Prepaid Cell Phone Plans Cost?

All of Metro By T-Mobile’s plans are “prepaid,” meaning you pay for service in advance. Plans start at $30 per month for unlimited calling and texting with 2 GB of data and go, up to $60 per month for the Unlimited Plus plan for a single line.

Unlimited calling and texting is included in all plans. 2GB of data is available for $30 per month, while 10 GB of monthly data is available for $40 monthly, and data used for streaming select music services doesn’t count towards your monthly data allotment.

The $50 Unlimited plan adds in 5 GB of mobile hotspot data, and offers a free 100 GB Google One Account, while the $60 Unlimited Plus plan offers 10 GB additional mobile hotspot data and adds in a free Amazon Prime subscription.

Metro by T-Mobile Setup Fees

Metro by T-Mobile requires customers to pay a $20 activation fee per line. There is also an additional cost of up to $30 per line to add a line to a cell phone plan, depending on the promotion. If you don’t have a Metro by T-Mobile SIM card, you can purchase one on its website for $10.

Metro by T-Mobile Optional Features

Metro by T-Mobile offers a variety of optional features which range in price from free, up to $20 per month. Outside of the Metro by T-Mobile’s most expensive plan which includes an Amazon Prime membership, no options for popular streaming services are featured.

Because of the Google One membership included in the Unlimited (5GB hotspot) plan, each person with a compatible Android device will receive 100 GB of cloud storage within Google Workspace at no added cost. Subscribers can opt to double their Google One storage for an additional $1 per month, or $8 per month for 2TB of storage.

Premium Service Bundle

This add on bundles Metro by T-Mobile’s most popular optional features into a single package and includes:

• McAfee Security for Metro by T-Mobile to protect your device from malware
• ScamShield Premium, the company’s anti-scam call technology
• Call forwarding

Pricing starts at $9 per month and varies based on device type and your location.

Shared Calling

Metro by T-Mobile’s unlimited plans only support calling between two people. Conference calls as well as calls to chat lines aren’t always supported but can be added on. Depending on the minutes needed, customers can add on 300 minutes of shared calling for $3 per month or 1,000 minutes of shared calling for $10 per month. Select Shared Calling service provides a bucket of minutes for certain numbers that are outside of Metro by T-Mobile's plans, like chat lines.

International Services

Customers will get unlimited calling to and from Canada with up to 5 GB of data roaming included for $5 per month. This feature includes unlimited text while in Canada, as well as international texting to countries around the world.

Similar to Canada, customers can opt-in for unlimited calling to and from Mexico for $5 per month. The Mexico Unlimited service features unlimited data, with up to 5 GB of high-speed data. This feature also includes unlimited text while in Mexico as well as international texting to other countries.

Customers can connect with their loved ones abroad in over 140 countries using Metro by T-Mobile’s Global Voice calling services for $10 per month. Unlimited texting is also available for select countries. If the allotted minutes aren’t enough, customers can double their Global Voice talk time for $20 per month.

Security Features

Every Metro by T-Mobile plan comes with basic scam block, scam call ID screenings, and caller ID. To take the protection up a notch, the company created Scam Shield Premium to manage blocked number lists, send categorized calls to voicemail, get more information with reverse number look-up, and get voicemails texted to you automatically for $2 per month.

For $3 per month, customers can upgrade to McAfee Security with ID Theft Protection . The protection includes features such as antivirus /anti-theft for 10 devices, True Key password management , and ID monitoring. The Security Bundle combines McAfee Security with ID Theft Protection and Scam Shield Premium for $5 a month.

The Storage and Security Bundle, priced at $3 per month, features both Scam Shield™ Premium as well as an upgraded Google One membership with 200 GB of cloud storage. This feature allows customers to keep important data backed up, and can be shared with up to five additional people.

Metro by T-Mobile, has access to the largest 5G network in America which covers 8,300+ cities and towns using T-Mobile Extended Range 5G. T-Mobile regularly expands its coverage by upgrading more than 1,000 cell sites and towers every month with Ultra Capacity 5G. Metro by T-Mobile includes 5G coverage at no extra charge and customers with 5G-capable phones can take advantage of the technology. Are you looking for a prepaid cell phone plan that’s juuust right? Well, Goldilocks, we think Metro by T-Mobile might fit the bill. Metro by T-Mobile offers decent coverage, and solid speeds at a competitive price.

With a low-data plan, a middle-of-the-pack data plan, and three unlimited options, there’s a plan for almost everyone. Those prices are pretty cheap too. But we’ll sure miss our HD video streaming.

Metro by T-Mobile unlimited plans

You’ve got three options for unlimited plans with Metro by T-Mobile. All three plans are pretty cheap and have high-speed data caps of 35 GB a month. Here are all the details.

Do you know what’s refreshing? When companies actually have straight-up pricing. The prices you see with Metro by T-Mobile already include taxes and regulatory fees. Since Metro is a T-Mobile subsidiary, we’d expect nothing less. ( T-Mobile is known for including taxes and fees in its advertised prices, which we think is awesomesauce).

One potential downside is the weaker coverage. 1 If you opt for an unlimited plan, you’ll want a solid connection everywhere you go. Compared to the coverage juggernaut, Verizon , Metro by T-Mobile’s coverage isn’t the best. But you'll still get a good connection in most urban areas.

Another downside is the risk of deprioritization.  This happens when the network owner, in this case T-Mobile, decides to prioritize the data speeds of some customers over others. During times of network congestion, Metro customers can end up at the back of the data connection line, so to speak.

Data caps and speed throttling

Not to be confused with deprioritization, data throttling is when your data is slowed down after you reach your high-speed data cap. With Metro, if you download over 35 GB of data in a single month, you might get throttled.

So, let’s see how T-Mobile compares to the competition with unlimited data plans.

Even though the prices look similar, you’ll probably pay a little less with Metro than you would with another similarly priced company. Why, you ask? Fees and taxes are already baked into the price. Points for honesty, Metro by T-Mobile.

Another massive thing going for Metro—5G LTE Mobile Hotspot. 5G is becoming more readily available with all mobile carriers, you can translate 5G to "really fast hotspot speeds." Metro continues to roll out its 5G coverage, it's safe to assume that the hotspot speeds will be mind-blowingly fast.

Setting up your Metro by T-Mobile phone plan

One important thing to note: while you can purchase most Metro by T-Mobile phones online, you’ll need to visit an actual store to set up your plan. Metro by T-Mobile stores are pretty common around most of the US, so you shouldn’t have much trouble.

Metro by T-Mobile family plans

Everyone should do their absolute darndest to be on a family plan. Metro by T-Mobile goes from being cheap to even cheaper.

The main difference you’ll see with your different Metro family plan options revolves around how much Mobile Hotspot data you plan on using.

If you travel a lot for business or school and need to rely on a mobile hotspot in a pinch, you might want to consider one of the more expensive family plan options.

By the way, don’t be afraid of the steep up-front costs you see above. You can avoid the cost by transferring your old phone over or buying an older phone. But if you want the latest and greatest, expect steep up-front costs for the new phone.

We know you’re excited about the super cheap Metro by T-Mobile, but remember that it doesn’t have quite the same coverage or streaming quality as say, Verizon. But hey, if the price is what matters most, rest assured you’ll get a good deal with Metro by T-Mobile.

Again, the upfront costs are based on purchasing brand new phones with your plan. You can avoid dropping all that money if you transfer your old phones. If you do get new phones for the fam, you can save some money buying through Metro as opposed to an AT&T or T-Mobile plan.

Metro by T-Mobile Prepaid plans

This is the moment of the movie where the protagonist takes off their glasses, lets down their hair, and you realize they were beautiful all along. Hopefully, movies don’t actually do that anymore (*cough* Princess Diaries *cough*).

For Metro by T-Mobile, prepaid plans are its bread and butter. You’ll have a hard time finding a better prepaid plan that includes 5 GB LTE mobile hotspot, along with 4G LTE coverage for such an affordable price. Other carriers, like AT&T and Ultra Mobile , can't claim the same speeds for prepaid plans.

Remember, all your fees and taxes are  included  in the price you see below for Metro. That's not the case with the competition.

Long story short, if you want a prepaid unlimited wireless plan, and you live in a good T-Mobile service area, Metro by T-Mobile is probably your best bet. It offers solid speeds and decent enough coverage for a price that’s as cheap or even cheaper than the competition.

Most prepaid cell phone companies don’t offer a great selection of the latest and greatest phones. That’s why we were pleasantly surprised by the phones Metro had to offer.

Along with LG, Motorola, and other brands, Metro keeps it real with various Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy phones. Nice.

Unfortunately, you won’t find any new Google phones here.

However, Metro does allow for a bring your own phone (BYOP) option if you’re committed to the Google Pixel lifestyle. You’ll need to visit a store to make sure your Google phone is fully compatible and then purchase a Metro SIM card.

Thinking of upgrading your Metro by T-Mobile phone?

You’ll need a SIM card to connect your phone to the Metro by T-Mobile network, but that doesn’t mean upgrading phones is as easy as swapping that SIM card to your new phone.

How good is Metro performance?

Metro uses T-Mobile’s network, which is the weakest of the big three networks when it comes to coverage, but still covers 62% of the country. All in all, it really depends on the location. T-Mobile especially shines in terms of urban coverage, but struggles in more rural areas.

Coverage issues aside, T-Mobile’s network gets high scores when it comes to speed. In our network testing, T-Mobile actually proved to offer the fastest wireless speeds amongst the big three carriers, and the upload speeds far surpassed other major carriers like AT&T and Verizon.

The Metro site states, “During congestion, Metro customers may notice reduced speeds vs. T-Mobile customers.” This is what we in the industry call deprioritization . (Spoiler alert: don’t be surprised if your favorite Hulu show starts to buffer.)

Metro customer service

If you’re looking for world-class customer service, you won’t find it at Metro. Or at any cell phone company, for that matter.

The sad fact is that wireless providers are notorious for poor customer service, and Metro is no exception. Many customer reviews note that there is lackluster service both in the store and over the phone. 1  T-Mobile scored a 74 in the 2023 American Customer Satisfaction Index Report. For reference, AT&T scored a 75, so T-Mobile has some room to improve. 2

Metro by T-Mobile has a good amount of four and five-star customer reviews mixed in through Consumer Affairs. 1 Metro has a ways to go, but they aren't doing the worst out of all the cell phone providers. So maybe there’s hope for Metro customer service after all. Either way, it’s best to be prepared to spend some time (and patience) when you visit the store or give them a call.

Recap: Is Metro any good?

Out of all the prepaid wireless providers out there, we think Metro is one of the best choices. Here’s why.

Plans: You’ve got a choice between four solid plans. Each one offers a good amount of data for a competitive price, including three unlimited options. But be prepared to visit your nearest Metro store to purchase that plan (and maybe your phone).

Performance: Metro runs on T-Mobile’s network, so you can expect great speeds and good coverage—although rural areas may have signal issues. There are two caveats, though: You’ll be able to stream video only in SD, and your data speeds may be slower than if you were a T-Mobile customer.

Customer service: What can we say? Metro customer service isn’t the best. But sadly, that’s true for most wireless companies.

Overall: Metro is a competitive choice for prepaid phone plans in particular. It might not be the best option for unlimited plans due to less-than-great coverage, but you can get away with it in urban areas.

If you’re behind on paying your bill, there’s a good chance Metro will disconnect your phone the day after your payment is due.

You might be able to call Metro and request a grace period. But keep in mind that your bill will be due the same day of the month the next month—your late payment won’t push back your due date.

For example, if your bill was due on May 3 and you paid on May 10, your next bill will still be due on June 3.

Out of all the prepaid unlimited wireless plans, Metro by T-Mobile is a solid choice. Especially if you live in an area where T-Mobile has good coverage. Metro offers competitive pricing, as well as pretty fast speeds that are hard to beat.

Yes, Metro uses T-Mobile’s GSM network.

If you’re coming from T-Mobile or AT&T, which both run on GSM networks, your phone will likely be good to go as long as you unlock it and purchase a Metro SIM card.

Metro by T-Mobile is one of the MVNOs that T-Mobile owns. There are a lot of other smaller carriers that run on T-Mobiles network including Mint Mobile , Ultra Mobile , and US Mobile . 

Even though Metro uses T-Mobile's network, the pricing options are a little different. You'll pay less for Metro at times of heavy network congestion, Metro customers may notice reduced speeds and are at risk of deprioritization vs. T-Mobile customers.

This is the case with all the best MVNOs. MVNOs piggyback off of bigger networks. You'll pay cheaper prices, but you'll also be the first to be deprioritized when the network is busy.

A ride across passages of history - Moscow Metro rolls on

Lying at a depth of 5 (Pechatniki station) to 80 metres (Park Pobedy station), the history of the last eight decades unfold before your eyes, carved out of marble and granite and built in iron and glass – revealing the tastes, ideas, dreams, hopes and disappointments of the previous generations and contemporaries. The Moscow Metro dates back to 1931, when its construction first began, although engineers Pyotr Balinsky and Evgeny Knorre submitted their first designs to the Moscow City Duma as far back as 1902. “His speeches carried a strong temptation: like a true demon, he would promise to cast Moscow down to the bottom of the sea and raise it above the clouds”, a journalist for the Russkoye Slovo newspaper commented on Balinsky’s idea. Yet the Duma, made up of rich people, did not bite the bait: after all, they all lived in the centre of the city and never rode overcrowded trams.

After five failed proposals before the Duma, the Moscow Metro finally threw open its doors on May 15, 1935, 18 years after the revolution, and carried the first passengers on its moving staircases, escalators, and the padded seats of its new wagons (unlike the wooden seats in trams). The first metro line – from Sokolniki to Dvorets Sovetov (now known as Kropotkinskaya) -- was 11 km long and had 13 stations. Now, the Moscow Metro has a track of over 300 km with 12 lines and 182 stations. The city’s development outline for 2020 envisages that, by then, another 120 km will have been added to the existing routes.

For the first 20 years of its history, the Moscow Metro was named after Lazar Kaganovich, the “iron commissar” and Stalin’s right hand man, who was in-charge of construction of the first stage of the metro (incidentally, he personally blew up the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in December 1931 as a part of the Proletarian Capital project). In 1955, however, the Metro was renamed after Vladimir Lenin. Although Russia has long since changed its political track, you can still find the images of the former leader at over 10 stations, including, for instance, busts of Lenin at Belorusskaya and Komsomolskaya stations, impressive mosaics at Baumanskaya and Kievskaya stations, a tile panel in the passage between the Borovitskaya and Biblioteka Imeni Lenina stations. By a bitter irony of fate, Lenin’s full-face and side-face images decorate the Tsaritsyno (translated as the Tsarina’s Estate) station (dubbed Lenino up until 1990) – images of the very person who ordered the shooting of the royal family. You will not, however, find any images of Stalin in Moscow’s underground. A symbol of Russia's victory, he was omnipresent in the late 1940s. After his death in 1953 and the denunciation of Stalin’s personality cult, his images were gradually withdrawn from the Moscow Metro.

“Architecture developed along the same lines, both above and below the surface. Anything that emerged above ground had a reflection underground. It is equally true that vice versa never occurred: good architecture underground but bad architecture above the ground,” says Nikolay Shumakov, chief architect of the Moscow Metro. The first metro stations, up until the mid-1950s, were conceived and built as luxurious “palaces for the people”, great architecture for a great state. Art historians insist that the richly-decorated underground was a deliberate ideological move to eulogise the young Soviet country. Stations built between 1937 and 1955 are characteristic of the first architectural period. Everything completed at this time is worthy of special attention. For instance, look at the ceiling at Mayakovskaya and Novokuznetskaya stations to see mosaic panels based on designs by artist Alexander Deineka – 24-Hour Soviet Sky and Heroic Labour of the Soviet People on the Home Front. The mosaics were assembled by famous mosaic artist Vladimir Frolov, author of the mosaic icons in St. Petersburg’s Church of the Saviour on Blood. The Ploshchad Revolutsii station was decorated with 76 bronze sculptures of workers, soldiers, farmers, students and other Soviet people. You can even find a frontier guard with a dog and rub its nose for good luck. You may also note that all the figures (except pioneers) are either sitting or bent, which engendered the sad joke – “Any Soviet man is either in jail or on his knees.”

1955 heralded the end of the good times for Russian architecture – both underground and above ground – after the Communist Party issued a decree "On elimination of extravagance in design and construction.” Dull stations, without any stucco work, mosaics, original columns or other “unjustified” elements, were built under the slogan “Kilometres at the expense of architecture”. Things were the same above the ground, where entire cities were built of commonplace five-storey apartment blocks, all looking the same, nicknamed ‘Khrushchevkas’ after the then leader, Nikita Khrushchev. To get a sense of this period’s architecture, see the few stations built in the 1960s-1980s like Tverskaya, Kitay-Gorod and Kolomenskaya. In 2002, with the reconstruction of the Vorobyovy Gory station, the development of the Moscow Metro entered a third stage, which could be defined as ‘renaissance’. The platform of the station offers a splendid view of the Moskva River, the Luzhniki Olympic Complex and the Academy of Sciences building. Architectural canons of the 1930s-1940s were once again in use in the design of underground stations. By the same token, artists once again become involved in decorating the stations. As such, the Sretensky Bulvar station boasts silhouettes of Pushkin, Gogol, and Timiryazev and Moscow sights; the Dostoevskaya station is decorated with black-and-white panels featuring the main characters from Dostoyevsky’s novels The Idiot, Demons, Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov, and the Maryina Roshcha station flaunts its pastoral mosaic landscapes. In 2004, Russia's first monorail transport system was launched into service – an elevated track (running 6 to 12 metres above the ground) in the northern part of Moscow, linking the All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Timiryazevskaya metro station. The evolution of the Moscow Metro goes on. It’s still a work in progress, with ambitious plans to move the Moscow Metro even closer to passengers over the next ten years, not just by adding an extra 120 km to its total track. “We want to strip the stations of everything we can,” says Nikolai Shumakov. “We are trying to show the passengers their very framework, what the metro is made of. Cast iron and concrete are beautiful.”

The trains are actually a part of the general traffic (i.e., they do not run to any special schedule) and are used on certain lines. The Reading Moscow Train , an ordinary train on the face of it, features extracts from literary works for adults and children. Each wagon has its own selection, from children’s fairy tales to Gogol. Circle Line. The Poetry in Metro Train carries an exposition, updated this year, dedicated to Italian poets Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarch, Giacomo Leopardi, etc. All the poems are featured in two languages, Russian and Italian. Filevskaya Line. The Sokolniki Retro Train looks exactly like the first Moscow Metro train, both inside and out. Painted brown, it has padded seats, typical wall decorations and retro lamps. Sokolnicheskaya Line. The Aquarelle Train looks like a cabinet painted with flowers and fruit on the outside. Inside, it is an art gallery featuring art reproductions from the Vyatka Apollinary and Viktor Vasnetsov Art Museum. Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line.

Revolution Square station (built in 1938) is close to the Red Square area. There are 72 sculptures in the station, depicting the people of the Soviet Union, including soldiers, farmers, athletes, writers, industrial workers and school children.
