Mentimeter – An Easy Way to Create Interactive Polls and Presentations

By Med Kharbach, PhD | Last Update: February 17, 2024

Mentimeter is a polling tool that allows you to create interactive presentations and quizzes with real-time voting. The way it works is simple:  use Mentimeter’s online editor to create interactive slides that embed different question types including Multiple Choice, Word Cloud, Open ended, Scales, Ranking, and Q&A.

When your quiz (Mentimeter calls it presentation) is ready,  share generated the code with your participants who can join using any mobile device with Internet connection. Participants can answer questions and view their results in real time. Final results can be downloaded and exported  for later analysis.

The purpose of this post is to introduce you to Mentimeter and walk you through some of the features it provides.

How to Use Mentimeter in Your Teaching?

Leveraging Mentimeter in your teaching opens a dynamic avenue for interactive learning and student engagement. Like other survey and polling tools I’ve explored, Mentimeter offers a rich suite of functionalities tailored for the educational setting. Here’s how you can integrate this versatile tool into your classroom activities:

  • Formative Assessments Made Easy: Quickly gauge your students’ comprehension and pinpoint learning challenges with Mentimeter’s array of pre-designed formative assessment templates. It’s an efficient way to ensure your teaching strategies are hitting the mark.
  • Boost Engagement with Interactive Presentations: Incorporate comprehension check questions directly after key slides to maintain student interest and confirm understanding as you go.
  • Polling for Insightful Classroom Dynamics: Engage students in their learning journey by polling them on topics directly tied to their coursework. These polls can serve as powerful discussion triggers, encouraging lively classroom debates.
  • Brainstorming Sessions Come to Life: Utilize the Word Cloud feature to visually highlight the most mentioned ideas during brainstorming sessions, bringing a new level of excitement to generating and discussing new concepts.
  • Empowering Student Voices: Mentimeter encourages all students to participate in class decisions, giving them a platform to express their opinions and preferences in a democratic manner.
  • Encourage Participation from Every Corner: With Mentimeter’s anonymous response option, even the most reserved students find a comfortable space to contribute their thoughts and feedback without the fear of being spotlighted.
  • Icebreakers That Actually Break the Ice: Kick off your sessions with Mentimeter’s engaging icebreakers. Choose from a variety of pre-made templates that are sure to get students warmed up and ready for the lesson ahead.
  • Exit Tickets Reimagined: Wrap up your classes with creative exit tickets that not only assess what students have learned but also end the session on a high note.

How to Create a Poll Using Mentimeter?

Creating a poll with Mentimeter is a streamlined process designed for ease and efficiency, allowing you to engage your audience in real-time. Here’s how to seamlessly set up your poll:

  • Starting Your Poll: First, sign into your Mentimeter account. Navigate to your dashboard and select ‘New Presentation’. This is your first step towards creating an interactive session. Give your presentation a meaningful name that reflects its purpose or content.
  • Choosing Your Slide Type: Once your presentation is named, it’s time to decide on the structure of your poll. Look to the right-hand panel of your screen; here, you’ll find three crucial tabs: Type, Content, and Customize. Begin with the ‘Type’ tab to explore the variety of slides you can include. Each slide type is designed for different interaction styles – from multiple choice to open-ended questions, ensuring you have the flexibility to tailor your poll according to your needs.
  • Crafting Your Questions: After selecting your slide type, move to the ‘Content’ tab. This is where the core of your poll takes shape. Enter your questions here. The platform is intuitive, offering different customization options based on the question format you choose. Whether it’s a multiple-choice query requiring various responses or an open-ended question for more nuanced answers, Mentimeter allows you to fine-tune each detail. Enhance your questions with visual aids – images and GIFs can be uploaded directly or chosen from integrated libraries like Unsplash and Giphy, adding a dynamic element to your poll.
  • Personalizing Your Presentation: The final step in the creation process is personalization. Switch to the ‘Customize’ tab to access a suite of settings for your slides. Here, you have the autonomy to manage how your poll is presented and interacted with by your audience. Adjust settings such as image display, voting options, visibility of instructions or results, and more, to fit the context and tone of your session. Further customize by selecting your preferred layout, text colors, and background hues to make your presentation visually appealing and aligned with your branding or thematic needs.

How to Create Quizzes in Mentimeter?

Crafting engaging quizzes in Mentimeter is a straightforward process that can significantly enhance the interactivity of your presentations. Mentimeter offers two primary quiz formats that cater to different engagement styles: the Select Answer Quiz, akin to a multiple-choice format where participants choose from provided options, and the Type Answer Quiz, which allows for open-ended responses where participants input their answers directly.

Here’s a streamlined guide to creating your interactive quiz with Mentimeter:

  • Start by Logging In: Access your Mentimeter account to begin the quiz creation process.
  • Initiate a New Presentation: Select ‘Create new presentation’ to embark on crafting your quiz.
  • Navigate to the Content Tab: Here, you’ll find the option for ‘Quiz Competition’. Scrolling down to this section lets you dive into the quiz creation module.
  • Select Your Question Type: Decide whether you’re going for a Select Answer or Type Answer quiz. This choice determines the nature of participant interaction—whether they’ll be selecting from given options or typing in their answers.
  • Define the Correct Answer: For accuracy and scoring purposes, pinpoint the correct answer(s) for your questions.
  • Customize Scoring Settings: Mentimeter allows you to tailor the scoring system. You can opt for ‘Faster answers to get more points’ to add a time-sensitive competitive edge, or ‘All correct answers get 1000 points’ for a more uniform scoring approach.
  • Set the Timer: Decide on the duration participants have to respond. You can choose between automatic countdown initiation for a faster pace or manual control for more flexibility.
  • Enhance Engagement with Music: Adding background music can elevate the quiz atmosphere, making it more lively and engaging.
  • Incorporate a Leaderboard: To foster a competitive spirit, include a leaderboard within your quiz. You can position it at strategic points to showcase ongoing participant rankings.

By following these steps, you can create a Mentimeter quiz that’s not only interactive but also tailored to your presentation’s needs, making learning and engagement a more enjoyable experience for your audience.

What is Mentimeter and How Can It Be Used for Teaching? Tips & Tricks

Mentimeter makes presentations ideal for teaching with quizzes, polls, and word clouds

Mentimeter

Mentimeter is a helpful presentation-based digital tool that allows educators to make the most of its features for teaching, including quizzes, polls, and word clouds. If you're already using presentation tools in class, perhaps on a smart whiteboard or screen, this is a really powerful version of that which could help you in class.

The idea here is to make the creation of whole class, group, or individual quizzes and more, all very easy to create and use. As such, you can be more efficient with your time as an educator while students can easily engage with all the material you have on offer.

This is not to be confused with quiz focused tools such as Quizlet or Kahoot ! , which don't offer much else. In the case of Mentimeter, you also have helpful polls -- ideal for in class assessments of learning -- and word clouds that are super helpful for working as a group.

Everything is very easy to use so this won't take time with training, since you can get going right away as a teacher and students will pick up interactions intuitively.

Helpful feedback and trend tools are also available to show student and class progress over time. This adds more depth to the tool, increasing its uses and potential, depending on how creative you want to get.

So, is this for your classroom? Read on to find all you need to know about Mentimeter.

What is Mentimeter?

Mentimeter is a presentation tool that is designed to work digitally, live. It's built both for use in the classroom as well as for remote education.

Tech & Learning Newsletter

Tools and ideas to transform education. Sign up below.

Unlike a PowerPoint or Slides presentation, this tool allows teachers to interact with the students in real time, take a poll, present a quiz, and more. Point being, this should be more engaging for students to help them learn, even when not in the class.

Mentimeter

Mentimeter is designed for use beyond the classroom, in business too, so there is lots of support, making this a very well-made platform that's getting constant updates from all its various users.

This tool can be used via a web browser, making it simple to access from nearly any device. Dedicated apps also help to make it even easier for students to use on their own smartphones and tablets wherever they are.

How does Mentimeter work?

Mentimeter requires you to sign-up to start using the service. This can be done easily with Google or Facebook login, or email address if you prefer. Then you're given the choice of either going on as a presenter or as an audience member.

That said, students can join an event -- as it's called -- by simply entering a code that you can send via your preferred communication method.

Mentimeter

Select a single icon to begin creating a presentation from scratch with a guided process. During this you can add events, which include questions, polls, word clouds, reactions, and more. These are where students have a chance to interact during the presentation.

Once the presentation is finished there will be data collated that can be used to see how the students responded throughout. More resources can also be found on the company's website, including a helpful FAQ and guidance videos.

What are the best Mentimeter features?

Mentimeter is very adaptive, so it can be accessed easily online or via the app -- but also via other apps. It is possible to integrate Mentimeter within the likes of PowerPoint or Zoom, for example. So, for example, teachers can add in events to a presentation already created, or use a Mentimeter presentation, in part, on a software platform required by a school or student, for example.

Mentimeter

In the case of Zoom integration, it makes remote learning much easier. Not only can a teacher carry out the presentation to students wherever they are -- as they interact -- but this can also all be seen and heard live using video chat. This is ideal for offering guidance as you go, just as you might in the physical classroom.

It's not just teachers who can create polls and questions, students can do it too, live. This allows educators to get students engaged during the presentation, perhaps adding questions for the class or directly for the teacher. A helpful upvote system makes for an simple way to find what everyone needs without taking up too much class time.

The word cloud can be a good way to work as a class to collaborate or brainstorm, perhaps creating character traits in a story, for example. For an ELL class or foreign language, it's possible to ask a question in multiple languages.

The fact all this offers data that can be analyzed by teachers makes it a very powerful tool both for use live as well as for future planning.

How much does Mentimeter cost?

Mentimeter has a Free version, which allows teachers to create unlimited presentations for unlimited audience members yet with a limit of two questions per slide and up to five quiz slides in total.

The Basic plan, at $11.99/month , gets you the above plus unlimited questions, and the ability to import presentations and to export results data to Excel.

Go for the Pro plan, at $24.99/month , and you get the above plus the ability to create teams for collaboration with others and branding –- all more business-user focused then.

The Campus plan, with custom pricing, gets you a single sign-on, shared templates, and a success manager.

Mentimeter best tips and tricks

Test skills first Use an Action Priority Matrix to find skills to teach first, followed by a quiz to see how these concepts are being absorbed and understood.

Brainstorm Use the word cloud feature to brainstorm anything you're working on in class. For example, you can use random words as prompts to practice creative writing.

Student led Have students use Mentimeter to create presentations that get the class interacting. Then spin-off more presentations using the reactions of students.
