Lizzo was awarded two trophies at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards on Tuesday night including song of the year for her chart-topping “ About Damn Time. ” Yet it was her People’s Champion honor that resonated with the crowd and audiences watching.
Her mother Shari Johnson-Jefferson presented the award to her daughter. “When I think of Lizzo the word champion comes to mind,” she said. “She’s a champion of others, she builds you up and she’s always in your corner. I should know because I’m her mother. Melissa has always been herself, 100% that chick and she has shown us all that we don’t have to conform to anyone’s standards in order to be happy, to be creative and to feel worthy. I know that Lizzo has literally saved lives.”
Lizzo added, “To be an icon is not about how long you’ve had your platform. Being an icon is what you do with that platform. And ever since the beginning of my career, I’ve used my platform to amplify marginalized voices.”

Lizzo Accepts the People’s Champion Award With Heartwarming Speech at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, Honors Female Advocates
Always representing. Lizzo received the People Champion honor at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards — and brought the audience to tears with her acceptance speech.

“I’m [going to] be honest, when I first heard about this award, I was on the fence about whether I should accept because, if I’m the people’s champ, I don’t need a trophy for championing people,” the 34-year-old musician candidly said during the Tuesday, December 6, awards show. “You know what I’m saying? I’m here tonight, because to be an icon isn’t about how long you’ve had your platform. Being an icon is what you do with that platform.”
The rapper, who also won Song of the Year, explained that she’s always used her platform to “amplify marginalized voices” — and therefore decided to bring representation to the Los Angeles-based event.

“Tonight, I am sharing this honor,” Lizzo said before bringing out women advocates from all walks of life. “Make some noise for the people, y’all. These are all activists and people that I think deserve the spotlight.”
The “2 Be Loved” songstress gave each woman their moment in the spotlight and highlighted their charity work and why she is in awe of each one. The stage included female rights workers, transgender advocates, gun violence organization founders, indigenous peoples champions and more.
“Give them their flowers!” Lizzo concluded. “Power will always be to the people! Thank you so much People’s Choice. Follow them and support them. OK, bye.”
The “Good As Hell” singer was announced as the recipient of the accolade in November thanks to her contributions to music and television, as well as her commitment to inclusivity across all races, genders, sexualities and sizes. Previous recipients of the award include Pink , Tyler Perry and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson .
In addition to this award, the “Truth Hurts” performer was also nominated in four music categories, including Female Artist of 2022, Song of 2022 for “About Damn Time,” Album of 2022 for Special and The Social Celebrity of 2022 Her Prime Video show Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls , which also earned an Emmy, was nominated for Competition Show of 2022 too.
Throughout her career, the flutist hasn’t shied away from using her platform to speak out about social justice topics and promote body inclusivity. At the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards in September, the Michigan native broke down in tears while accepting the award for the Best Competition Program.
“When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media. Someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me,” Lizzo said in her speech, noting how important representation in the film and television industry is to her. “If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I’d be like, ‘You gonna see that person but, bitch, it’s gonna have to be you.’”
The “About Damn Time” artist also shut down her haters at the 2022 Video Music Awards in August after she took home the impactful Video for Good award .

“I want to say thank you so much for supporting me and loving me. And now, to the bitches that got something to say about me in the press,” the Michigan native shared with the audience at the time. “You know what, I’m not going to say nothing. They’ll be like, ‘Lizzo, why don’t you clap back?’ Because bitch, I’m winning, hoe! Big bitch is winning, hoe!”
Lizzo’s speech came shortly after comedian Aries Spears made comments about the Yitty founder’s weight. While she did not acknowledge the New York native’s words, she instead used her platform to encourage everyone to vote and reminded her fans that their voice matters.
“Bitch! Thank you so much,” she gushed. “I don’t know what a music video for good means, but I do know what your vote means and that’s a f—king lot. Your vote means everything to me, it means everything to making a change in this country. So remember when you’re voting for your favorite artist, vote to change some of these laws that are oppressing us.”

The true protagonist of the series, however, is Dulaney’s mother, Carol, who sets out in search of justice for her son after he is declared AWOL. The docuseries is woven together by first-hand accounts of the incident from Carol as well as Leroy’s siblings and wife.
Director and executive producer Joshua Bennett is pioneering the production for “Where Is Private Dulaney?” joined by co-executive producers Maro Chermayeff, Jeff Dupre, Justin Barnes, Mark Grande, Rob Meyers and Beth Hoppe.
Watch the official trailer below, which was released today in tandem with the show’s premiere date announcement.
The show, which was originally set to debut Nov. 30, sees Vives as a devoted music teacher named Amaranto Molina, who attempts to inspire a group of lackluster students to look to music for personal healing rather than commercial success. The young musicians, dubbed “The Low Tones,” will be forced to battle head-to-head with “The High Tones,” which is comprised of the top five musicians at the school.
The original trailer, which has since been taken down since the premiere date change, showed glimpses of the film’s upcoming musical numbers as well as moments of comedic respite, primarily highlighted through a rivalry between Amaranto and principal Eduardo Kramer (Julián Arango), who oversees The High Tones.
Other cast members include Kevin Bury, Elena Vives, Brainer Gamboa, María Fernanda Marín, Catalina Polo, Gregorio Umaña, Manuela Duque, Salomé Camargo and more.
The pilot season of “The Low Tone Club” is being produced by TeleColombia for the Walt Disney Company. The series is being directed by Jorge Navas, who is known for his 2009 film “Blood and Rain.”

Per a press release sent to The Root , the “special” (ha!) award is being bestowed upon the “About Damn Time” artist for her continuous and “groundbreaking contributions to music and television, as well as her commitment to championing overall diversity and inclusivity across race, gender, sexuality, and size.”
Said Cassandra Tryon, SVP, Entertainment Live Events, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming of their choice to highlight Lizzo:
“Lizzo is not only an incredibly talented performer and groundbreaking entertainer, she is also a role model and inspiration to fans worldwide. She leads with kindness, advocates for inclusivity, and champions increased diversity and equity in the industry and beyond. Her commitment to breaking barriers and empowering others to use their own voices to create change makes her a true ‘People’s Champion.’”
Additionally, the “Cuz I Love You” singer will continue in her pattern of transparency and vulnerability with her fans by releasing a new documentary that chronicles her rise to fame. Aptly titled Love, Lizzo , the forthcoming project will center around the “inspirational story behind her humble beginnings to her meteoric rise with an intimate look into the moments that shaped her hard-earned rise to fame, success, love and international stardom,” per Billboard.
“Girl, Im bouta have a panic attack,” Lizzo tweeted on Thursday sharing the trailer. Sis, if I’ve learned anything from you since you hit the mainstream years ago, it’s that you have no reason to be nervous. I, and the rest of your fans, love you and we’ll undoubtedly receive this glimpse into your life with open arms just like we have you and your brilliant personality and talents. Let’s press play together, yeah? Maybe that’ll knock all the nerves away. I’ll have my people call your people.
The 2022 People’s Choice Awards goes down Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 9pm ET from Barker Hangar in Los Angeles, airing on NBC and E!. The Love, Lizzo documentary hits HBO Max on Thanksgiving.

Lizzo's Most Empowering Quotes
Lizzo became a household name with the release of her RIAA platinum-certified 2019 album CUZ I LOVE YOU , which hit #4 on the Billboard 200 chart and featured hit songs like " Juice ," " Good As Hell " and "Tempo" featuring Missy Elliott .
The album took home a 2020 Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album, with "Jerome" also winning Best Traditional R&B Performance.
The 34-year-old became the third female rapper without a featured artist to hit #1 on Billboard 's "Hot 100" with her iconic tune " Truth Hurts ," as well as the first Black solo female R&B singer to do so since 2012. The song dominated the charts for seven weeks, cementing her as the longest-running #1 ever held by a female rapper.
As if "Truth Hurts" hadn't made enough history, the song was also named by Rolling Stone as one of their "500 Greatest Songs Of All Time" and earned Lizzo her third 2020 Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance.
Since her 2019 album's success, Lizzo made waves again with her earworm anthem "About Damn Time" and her 2022 album Special . She was named Time and Entertainment Weekly 's "Entertainer of the Year" in 2019 and has gone on to appear on the covers of publications such as Vanity Fair , People , Rolling Stone , Vogue , British Vogue , Billboard , Variety and more.
She has also performed on several awards and TV stages, from Saturday Night Live and the Grammys to the BET Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards , to name a few.
2022 People's Choice Awards Nominees: Celebs React
Most recently, Lizzo earned a 2022 Emmy Award for her Amazon Prime Video reality series Lizzo's Watch Out For The Big Grrrls , a competition show to find dancers for her latest tour. And when she's not posting hilarious videos on TikTok , Lizzo's continuing to make a name for herself in the world of fashion with her shapewear brand YITTY , which features a range of sizes from 6X to XS.
Hosted by Kenan Thompson , the 2022 People's Choice Awards air Thursday, Dec. 6, at 8 p.m. on NBC and E!.
