LinkedIn has never been the shiniest object among its social media peers. However, it’s arguably one of the most valuable websites for career and business development activities, including recruiting talent, applying for jobs, generating leads, getting clients, and networking. So, let’s review its premium plans in this post.

LinkedIn offers free and premium accounts/plans, which over 1 billion people use to maintain online professional profiles in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

I’ve been on LinkedIn since October 18, 2009. I joined the platform because of the hype surrounding it and to expand my online footprint. Since then, I’ve made numerous changes and tweaks to my profile.

I’ve never focused on LinkedIn to make money online, as I have with Facebook and YouTube, because it’s one-dimensional by comparison. Nevertheless, I tried LinkedIn Premium Business to assess how I could use it to grow my digital marketing agency, including gaining leads and clients.

What is a LinkedIn InMail?

LinkedIn InMails allows you to send messages to people outside your network, i.e., people not on your connections list. Messages can have up to 200 characters in the subject line and 1,900 characters in the body. You must also enter a character in the subject line to send an InMail. Lastly, you can accumulate InMail message credits monthly, which expire after 120 days .

LinkedIn InMail Alternatives

LinkedIn Premium’s most touted feature is InMail, but is it worth paying for? No, it isn’t worth the expense. Secondly, there are other ways to message and connect with people on LinkedIn or other social apps for free or less money. Here are some methods.

Send a person a connection request and note why you want to connect with them. That’s how I’ve developed many relationships and grown my LinkedIn network.

Add “LION” (LinkedIn Open Networker) to your headline to grow your network faster. A LION is a person who is willing to connect with anyone and everyone on LinkedIn. Alternatively, seek LIONs to expand your networking possibilities.

Review the person’s profile to see what groups he’s joined and request to join those groups. When you become a group member, click on “members” or “see all” (in the top right corner) and search for the person. You’ll likely be able to message that person.

Let recruiters know you’re open to working and seeking opportunities by enabling the profile hashtag #opentowork.

Contact mutual connections, one at a time, for an introduction to the person you want to meet.

Review the individual’s about/intro section for her contact details.

Contact the person through a social media app like Facebook, Messenger, YouTube, or Twitter.

Visit the person’s company and personal website for a contact form or email address.

Subscribe to the person’s newsletter to get his email. For example, one surefire way to contact me is to subscribe to my email list and respond to one of my emails.

Use a sales intelligence and automation platform. Many sales intelligence companies provide email addresses for LinkedIn users, including RocketReach, Clearbit Connect, Hunter, Find That Email, and ContactOut.

My LinkedIn 30-Day Free Trial

I tried LinkedIn Premium for 30 days and chose the Premium Business plan. It was fantastic to see the gold premium icon beside my name. Additionally, I could see who viewed me in the last 90 days and how they found me, for example, on the homepage or through a connection.

I sent a few InMails but didn’t get any replies. However, I did receive messages from people outside my network because I was on a premium plan (InMail works both ways; you can send and receive messages from individuals who aren’t connected to you). I didn’t take any courses on LinkedIn Learning as I prefer to take classes on Coursera .

Is LinkedIn Premium Worth It?

I wasn’t impressed with LinkedIn Premium Business because the additional features, insights, and analytics weren’t as valuable as I had hoped. However, the gold Premium icon made me appear as a professional networker and somebody in the “in” crowd (no pun intended).

You could make the “get one client, and it pays for itself” argument regarding premium business and sales plans. However, that’s a flawed premise because you can get clients without LinkedIn Premium and with free methods, as I have. Therefore, it isn’t easy to justify spending hundreds on a LinkedIn premium plan.

Since I only tried Premium Business, I don’t know how other plans measure up. However, I’m confident salespeople and recruiters can benefit from LinkedIn’s premium services.

Is LinkedIn Premium worth it for job seekers? No, it isn’t. LinkedIn Premium Career comes with a few helpful benefits. However, those features won’t make or break your employment prospects. Secondly, while having a LinkedIn profile is essential for most job seekers, gaining employment requires more than having a premium account. Alternatively, job seekers should learn how to get a job by reading how-to articles, getting advice, rehearsing interviews, networking, etc.

First, many alternative solutions to LinkedIn Premium are more practical and cost-efficient. Secondly, LinkedIn Basic is robust and provides many terrific features to complete activities on a smaller scale. Finally, other products and services can benefit your business just as much.

  • Recruiter Professional Services allows up to 100 InMails a month , while Recruiter Corporate allows 150 InMails

LinkedIn Learning: $19.99/month or free with some Premium accounts – To develop individual and team skills

LinkedIn Learning offers a pool of high-value 21,000+ courses curated and taught by industry professionals. It focuses on interactive, hands-on learning and is worth the investment if you’re looking to upgrade your teams’ or your skills. 

The platform’s courses are spread across fields like creative, business, technology, and design.

I Tried LinkedIn Premium as a Creator — Here’s My Honest Review

Everything you need to know about using LinkedIn Premium to build your personal brand, increase engagement, and grow your following.

It’s not the first time I’ve tried out LinkedIn Premium — but it is the first time I’m approaching the platform’s paid subscription as a creator. 

While actively hunting for my new role in early 2023, I took advantage of the free trial of LinkedIn Premium, then extended it for another few months. As a job seeker, the benefits were great — the platform recommended jobs I would be a top applicant for and allowed me to reach out to hiring managers directly, even if I wasn’t connected to them.

I didn’t end up as a content writer at Buffer because of LinkedIn (that was down to a fun Instagram post , interestingly enough), but I definitely found it valuable in my job search. I landed several interviews thanks to the service and would highly recommend it to those looking for a new opportunity. 

But, after nabbing my dream role at Buffer , my goals on LinkedIn shifted. I love creating content on the platform, plus I’ve just launched a podcast for B2B marketers that I’m keen to, well, market. In a nutshell, I want to generate engagement and grow my audience — could LinkedIn Premium help with that, too?

It just might. I’ve noticed an uptick in banner ads promising everything from AI assistance to increased profile views — and I was curious to put it to the test. 

So, at the outset of 2024, I signed up for LinkedIn Premium again and made it my mission to answer the question: "Is LinkedIn Premium worth it for creators?"

Here’s everything you need to know about using LinkedIn Premium to build your personal brand , increase engagement, and grow your following. 

What you get with LinkedIn Premium

First, let’s talk about the LinkedIn tools and features you’ll unlock with LinkedIn Premium. All the things listed below are available with all four tiers of the premium plans (more on this below):

  • LinkedIn Premium badge: A gold badge on your profile.
  • InMail credits: The ability to message someone you’re not already connected with.
  • Profile view insights: See exactly who has viewed your profile within the last 90 or 365 days (depending on your plan) unless that user is also on Premium and has set their profile to private.
  • Private browsing: Access to public, semi-private, or private mode to keep your identity hidden while browsing other profiles.
  • AI Profile writing assistant: A relatively new feature that will help you polish up the headline and about section on your profile.
  • AI message drafts: AI help in composing messages (only available in the U.S. now).
  • LinkedIn Learning courses: Access to LinkedIn’s extensive library of on-demand courses per week.
  • Open profile: A setting you can turn on to make it possible for anyone to get in touch with you, whether you’re connected or not.  

LinkedIn Premium pricing 

How much does LinkedIn Premium cost? That depends on which plan you go for. LinkedIn Premium plans range from $39 per month to over $150/month. Prices will depend on your region. 

Your options, in order of cost:

  • LinkedIn Premium Career 
  • LinkedIn Premium Business
  • LinkedIn Sales Navigator
  • LinkedIn Recruiter Lite

The primary differences between the plans are how far back you can see profile views, people browsing, more advanced search filters, and saved leads. The more expensive plans are targeted at salespeople and recruiters.

As part of the LinkedIn Premium sign-up, LinkedIn recommended the Business plan for my needs. I went with that plan to ensure this review was as comprehensive as possible.

Can you get LinkedIn Premium for free?

Technically, yes! You can try out a LinkedIn Premium account for free as part of their 30-day free trial of the service. 

There are a few Ts and Cs, though. LinkedIn Premium’s free trial is only available to users who have never subscribed before, and you’ll also have to enter your credit card details (but it’s pretty easy to cancel before you’re charged if you decide the plan is not for you). 

How to sign up for LinkedIn Premium

I was really impressed by LinkedIn Premium’s onboarding process. It’s incredibly smooth, and there are plenty of tips and resources available to help you make the most of all the new functionality you have access to. 

First, I’ll walk you through how to sign up. 

  • Log in to LinkedIn.com. 
  • Click the Me profile icon at the top right of your homepage.
  • Choose Settings & Privacy from the dropdown menu.
  • Choose Account preferences on the left pane.
  • Under Subscriptions & payments , click Change next to Premium Subscription.
  • Answer the prompts, and LinkedIn will recommend a plan that suits your needs (you can choose any, though!)
  • Follow the prompts on the page to finish.

Now, it’s time to explore. You’ll receive a welcome email from LinkedIn, and it’s a good idea to explore the resources they direct you to. 

There’s also a helpful page that will show you exactly what tools you can access, plus how to use them. Click on the Me dropdown menu > Premium features .

LinkedIn Premium: My experience as a creator

LinkedIn is no longer just for jobseekers — it’s become a powerful platform for creators, thanks to the rise of the personal brand. Still, LinkedIn’s Premium subscriptions are squarely aimed at jobseekers, salespeople, and recruiters, with tools explicitly built to meet their needs.  

That said, some of these features could come in handy if you’re looking to create content and build a following on the platform. 

Here’s a look at those and how I’d recommend using them.

Profile view insights

Profile views are one of the best LinkedIn Premium features. First, seeing exactly who is looking at you is loads of fun. But most importantly, this feature can be an interesting one to keep an eye on as a creator, too. 

I see the folks heading over to my profile as an indicator of click-through rate. There’s no simple way to tie profile views back to a specific piece of content, of course, but it’s useful to get a picture of the kind of people your content is attracting. 

Profile views offer more of a deep dive into the specific people your content or headline inspires enough to click over to your profile and take action. To see this, head over to  Profile > Analytics > Profile views .

From there, click on ‘Show more Premium analytics’ to get a breakdown of the top companies, locations, and industries who have looked at your profile.

Is there a workaround for non-premium users? 

Sort of. While you can only see the identity of a small percentage of the folks who view your profile with a free LinkedIn account, you can still get a solid breakdown of follower demographics — provided you have Creator Mode on (it’s completely free and not tied to any LinkedIn Premium subscription). 

For audience demographics in LinkedIn’s analytics, go to Profile > Analytics > Followers, and you’ll see a similar breakdown (though this is for new followers, not just views). You can filter these by job title, location, and industry, too.

InMail credits

If you’re on the hunt for a new job or working in sales, LinkedIn’s InMail messages system has some pretty obvious use cases — talking to hiring managers or potential customers — though they’re less overtly useful for creators. 

But when you’re building a following, tapping into the audiences of others can be a win-win for both creators. In fact, social media collaboration is one of the tactics well-followed creator Aarushi Singh recommended in her recent Buffer guest post on how she grew on LinkedIn . These could take shape in plenty of ways — partner carousel posts , LinkedIn Lives, collab videos — but all that requires building a relationship first. 

That’s where InMails come in. With five credits per month on the LinkedIn Premium Career plan and 15 on the LinkedIn Premium Business plan, you’ll have more than enough to get in touch with other creators in your niche and professional network and (if you play your cards right) plan a collaborative strategy.

Yes — a pretty good one, too. LinkedIn offers a (more limited) way to contact folks outside your network with a basic account: personalized connection requests. All it requires is hitting the Connect button on another user’s profile and then clicking Add note.

You’ll be limited to 300 characters, but it’s a great springboard. And once that user accepts your connection request, their DMs are open to you. 

Custom button

LinkedIn Premium members can create a customized button for their profile, which can be a great way to direct followers to your link-in-bio or landing page . This is particularly handy if you monetize your work through consulting, a newsletter, or something similar. 

To edit yours, navigate to your profile, then click the Edit button (the pencil icon) on the top right. Scroll to the bottom of the pop-up to find the Edit custom button option, then choose Premium custom button .

The button text options are: 

  • Visit my store
  • Visit my website
  • View my portfolio
  • View my blog
  • Book an appointment

Yes! There is another great option here for those using the free version of LinkedIn. While the button won’t appear as prominently on your profile as the Premium version, the free custom button is more customizable. You can choose whatever text you’d like to be clickable and still use any link.

LinkedIn’s AI Profile assistant 

All the successful LinkedIn creators I’ve spoken to have stressed the importance of your LinkedIn profile. I’m already fairly happy with mine, but I was excited to see if LinkedIn’s AI could help make it really stand out.

As part of this feature, the AI will review your current headline and bio and make suggestions to improve it. I found the results to be mediocre. 

The headline suggestions weren’t groundbreaking — but, I reasoned, the AI-recommended keywords might give me a leg up when it comes to LinkedIn search. I opted for the one below.

The about section AI suggestion was decent. While it was more formal than I’d have liked, it didn’t have that obviously AI-generated tone. The suggestion also wasn’t 100 percent accurate (likely down to gaps in my profile), but with a few tweaks, it would have been good to go.

That said, I’m rather partial to my current, pithy about section, and I feel like it showcases my skill as a writer a little better than the AI’s tell-don’t-show option. I opted to keep my old about section:

LinkedIn has no features that could work as a substitute for the AI profile assistant. Still, you should be able to get similar results with an external AI tool like ChatGPT, provided you give it enough information in your prompt. 

My content performance on LinkedIn Premium

LinkedIn promises 2.6X faster hiring and 4X more profile views — but not that content by Premium members will be favored by the LinkedIn algorithm .

But, as social media platforms move increasingly towards a pay-to-play future ( Meta Verified for Instagram and Facebook seems to be headed that way), I felt it was worth testing to see if LinkedIn Premium affected content performance.

I kept my content strategy and cadence the same during my two-week Premium trial to eliminate variables. 

Here’s a look at my analytics: 

Impressions

I saw a drop in my impressions during this period, but that was something I’d been expecting. Several weeks prior, I’d had a LinkedIn post perform exceptionally well, and I was still feeling the tail-end of that great performance in the run-up to this experiment. 

With that in the mix, I felt that my impressions looked exactly as expected — LinkedIn Premium seemed to have no effect on my post impressions.

Engagement 

My engagement numbers painted a similar picture. I reason that this drop has more to do with the content that came before this and very little to do with LinkedIn Premium.

New followers

This number was fascinating to me since my content was clearly not reaching as many people as I had been in the weeks prior — and yet, I was converting more. While I can only theorize why this is, I suspect it may have something to do with an increase in profile views below.

Profile views

I saw an impressive increase in profile views — 28 percent — which I believe is the only metric impacted by subscribing to LinkedIn Premium. 

My content doesn’t seem to be getting a boost as a LinkedIn Premium subscriber — but it appears that my profile did. In other words, I suspect these new profile viewers were not discovering my content in their feeds, but finding my profile in LinkedIn’s search.

The verdict: is LinkedIn Premium worth it for creators?

If you’re looking for a new job, LinkedIn Premium will definitely give you a leg-up.

But as a creator, I don’t think LinkedIn Premium is worth the cost. A handful of features might benefit creators, but there are some great workarounds for free LinkedIn users that will have a similar effect. 

If you’re looking to grow your following and increase engagement as you share content on the platform, turning on Creator Mode is far more powerful than Premium. 

It gives you access to a ‘follow’ button on your profile, deeper analytics, that customizable button, LinkedIn Live, newsletters, and more. 

Turning it on is really easy, too. Go to your LinkedIn profile, scroll down to Resources , and click on Creator mode .

You probably already have a free LinkedIn account. Who doesn’t, right? At some stage, though, you’ll likely need to consider upgrading to a Premium account, especially if you plan to use it for outreach and lead generation.

So, in this post, I’ll explain LinkedIn Premium costs in detail, as well as some of its pros and cons. Ultimately, you’ll learn if LinkedIn Premium is worth it for you.

How Much Does LinkedIn Premium Cost?

When it comes to LinkedIn’s Premium offering , you have a few choices at different price levels:

  • Linkedin Premium Career, priced at $39.99 per month.
  • Linkedin Premium Business, priced at $47.99 per month.
  • Linkedin Sales Navigator Core, priced at $79.99 per user per month.
  • Linkedin Recruiter Lite, priced at $140 per month.

Each of these plans has a specific purpose. When it comes to lead generation , you’ll likely need either LinkedIn Premium Business or Sales Navigator .

Premium is ideal if you’d like to grow your network and includes unlimited people browsing and a few InMail credits .

However, if lead generation is your main focus, you can’t beat Sales Navigator. Here, you’ll get access to the Sales Navigator platform, which is specifically designed to streamline your lead generation efforts.

You’ll also get unlimited people browsing, 50 InMail credits, lead and account lists, lead recommendations, advanced lead search, and more.  

Is LinkedIn Premium Worth It?

Now, is LinkedIn Premium really worth it? It really depends on which plan you're choosing and what you're looking for.

Let's review each plan.

Linkedin Premium Career

The offering of that plan is to help you find a job faster. Linkedin Premium Career costs $39,99 / month .

Pro: LinkedIn Learning

Although not directly related to lead generation, another significant benefit of LinkedIn Premium is that it gives you access to a massive library of courses presented by industry experts on LinkedIn Learning .

You'll find courses on anything from business to communication, technology, marketing, and more.

This allows you to expand your skill set, which, in turn, helps you gather more leads and make more sales. And, if you don't find a course you'd like to do, you probably will sometime in the future, as the library is constantly expanded with new courses almost every week.

My personal opinion is that Linkedin Premium Career is not really worth it.

You're unlikely to contact people via InMail to apply for a job (probably better to apply through the standard process or to send an email). You don't really care about who viewed your profile if they didn't contact you.

Linkedin Premium Business

Linkedin Premium Business is designed to help you grow and nurture your network.

LinkedIn Premium Business starts at $47.99 per month.

With Linkedin Premium Business, you get:

  • 15 InMails per month
  • Unlimited People Browsing

Pro: Extended Capabilities

One of LinkedIn Premium’s major benefits is that it gives you access to extended capabilities by removing many restrictions that a free account has .

For example, with a free account, you can only do several advanced searches and browse a limited number of people before these limitations kick in, which might limit the number of leads you can generate.

Luckily, with a Premium account, this won’t be a problem.

Pro: Open Profile

With a free account, only people connected to you on the LinkedIn platform, in other words, in your network, can send you a message.

When you have a Premium account, though, you’ll have the option to allow people outside your network to get in touch with you. This eliminates any friction for potential leads interested in your product or service.

Pro: Profile Views

When someone has looked at your profile, they’ll be more likely to answer messages you send them or accept your connection request. So, seeing who viewed your profile is precious. The problem is that, with a free account, you can only see your profile's most recent five viewers.

In contrast, with a Premium account, you can see all the people who have viewed your profile in the past 90 days.

In addition, you’ll also see the number of profile visitors you get every week. This helps you gauge how well your profile is optimized.

Pro: InMail

We’ve mentioned that only people in your network can message you if you have a free account. The same applies to you. So, you can only send messages to those people in your network .

To get past this limitation, you’ll need to use InMail .

Some benefits of InMail include a higher response rate than regular messages and more character space .  

InMail is particularly useful when you want to get in touch with a prospect before sending them a connection request. Because you can include more information in your connection request note , it becomes easier to explain why you’re reaching out and why you should be connected.

Fortunately, with a Premium account, you’ll have access to a certain number of InMail credits, depending on the plan you’ve subscribed to.  

Con: LinkedIn Premium Is Pricey

One of the major cons of using LinkedIn Premium is that it isn’t cheap. Sure, it does offer features that can help you grow your business and generate more revenue. Still, you’ll have to carefully consider its costs against where you are in your business’s lifecycle.

This is even more relevant if you’re a new business trying to limit and manage its expenses.

You’ll also have to consider the various limits, credit top-ups, and additional tools you’ll need to run effective outreach through LinkedIn.

My personal opinion is that Linkedin Premium Business is not really worth it, too.

Some things in this plan are nice to have, but you're paying a hefty price while missing on the big value which is Sales Navigator. So to me, you might as well pay +20% extra to get the next plan (Sales Navigator) and get 200% more value.

Linkedin Premium Sales Navigator Core

Linkedin Premium Sales Navigator is the real sales offering of Linkedin. It's the real deal, including all the perks from the other plans + access to the Sales Navigator database. Mandatory subscription if you're in sales in my eyes...

LinkedIn Sales Navigator Core costs $79.99 per user per month.

It has the same features as Linkedin Premium Business, but with more things. Specifically:

  • 50 InMails per month
  • See Who's Viewed Your Profile from the last 365 days
  • + Access to Sales Navigator

Pro: You Get Access to Sales Navigator

Sales Navigator is one of the best B2B contact databases . After all, everyone has a LinkedIn profile. And since it’s used for job searches and expanding influence, you can bet they keep it updated!

Since the data is directly from the social network, it is as up-to-date as you can get compared to other tools.

But one problem is that you can’t bulk-export leads from Sales Navigator . This makes it hard to scale outreach without additional cold outreach tools and LinkedIn scrapers .

Fortunately, you can solve that problem with Findymail .

Findymail lets you export leads outside of Sales Navigator and enrich them with B2B emails so that you can reach out to them by email.

I'll be honest, I never worked in the recruitment niche so I don't really know if Recruiter Lite is very good or not. But we've had people requesting for Findymail to work with Linkedin Recruiter so I guess it is used.

What's good about all those Linkedin premium plans is that you have a one month trial to test things out first. Only after testing can you decide if you get more value than how much it's costing you.

At the end of the day, all that matters is selling more. Is LinkedIn Premium going to make it easier for you to find and get in touch with the right leads for your business?

LinkedIn claims to have a membership of one billion worldwide, and not all of them are actively job-hunting. Over 875 million people use LinkedIn , and 39 percent of users pay for LinkedIn Premium. But is LinkedIn Premium worth it? Keep reading to find out!

LinkedIn Premium

LinkedIn Premium is a paid subscription upgrade to the free business networking platform that enables you to connect with LinkedIn users outside your network. With the free version of LinkedIn, you have access to the contact information of all those who you are "linked in" with, and you can also send them messages through LinkedIn’s InMail.

However, you don’t have this access to people outside your network (i.e., 2nd and 3rd) connections. You have to be a premium member to get contact information and send InMails to people that aren’t in your LinkedIn network.

There are four plans for LinkedIn Premium membership, which differ depending on how you want to use your LinkedIn account. The premium plans LinkedIn offers include:

LinkedIn website

Career - This plan is specifically designed for people looking for a job . It's the least expensive premium plan at $39.99 per month or $239.88 per year. With the Career plan, you can send five InMails a month to people outside your network and see who has viewed your profile within the last 90 days. You are limited in the number of profiles you can browse. You also get more detailed information on job postings, like how you rank among other applicants for the job, what the competition for the job looks like, and additional insights into the position.

Business - This plan is similar to the Career plan, with more benefits. You get 15 InMail credits per month, can see who has viewed your profile within the last year, and can browse an unlimited number of profiles outside your network (this is limited in the Career plan). The cost is $69.99 per month or $538.88 per year.

Sales Navigator Core - This plan is designed for sales professionals who want to use LinkedIn to prospect new customers. It provides you with 50 credits per month plus access to LinkedIn’s Sales Navigator platform to generate and save leads. The cost is $99.99 per month or $959.88 per year.

Recruiter Lite - On the flip side of the LinkedIn Career plan, which helps people find jobs, Recruiter Lite helps recruiters find qualified candidates . The plan includes 30 InMail credits per month and unlimited profile browsing. The cost is $169.99 per month or $1,679.88 per year.

LinkedIn allows you to try one of its Premium subscriptions for free for one month. You can sign up through “Manage Premium account” under “Subscriptions and payments” in the “Account preferences” of your profile settings.

You will have to give your credit card information to take advantage of the free month because, at the end of the month, you will be charged for the regular monthly paid subscription price.

Another advantage of LinkedIn Premium over the free plan is that you can access LinkedIn’s online educational platform, LinkedIn Learning. The platform offers over 5,000 business development courses and provides personal recommendations on which ones may help further your career. Once you’ve completed a course, you can post it to your LinkedIn profile for recruiters to see.

A promising trend has emerged in C3.ai's business.

Founded in 2009, C3.ai ( AI -0.66% ) was one of the world's first enterprise artificial intelligence (AI) companies. It has built a portfolio of over 40 ready-made AI applications for businesses in 19 different industries, including financial services, energy, and manufacturing.

Those businesses can integrate the apps directly into their operations, saving them the time and money otherwise required to build their own from scratch.

Around two years ago, C3.ai abandoned its subscription-based revenue model in favor of a consumption-based model instead. It eliminates lengthy negotiating processes, which allows the company to onboard customers more quickly, and they only pay for what they use.

C3.ai warned investors this transition would cause a temporary slowdown in its revenue growth because it would take time for customers to ramp up their consumption. Sure enough, quarterly revenue actually started to shrink (year over year) less than one year after the announcement.

However, C3.ai was confident the move to consumption-based pricing would pay off long term. The company's latest results are starting to support that view as revenue growth has accelerated in each of the last five quarters:

C3.ai is due to report its fiscal 2025 first quarter (ending July 31) results in the first week of September. The company's guidance suggests it could report revenue growth of as high as 23%, which would mark yet another quarter of acceleration.

The stock currently trades at a price to sales (P/S) ratio of 9.9, which is 41% below its average of 16.7 since becoming a public company nearly four years ago. Accelerating revenue growth should lead to a higher stock price if the P/S ratio remains unchanged, but even its valuation multiple could climb if the top-line momentum holds. Investors should keep an eye out for the September report.

The heartbreaking price of love

The soaring cost of going on dates is pricing young singles out of the market

Ben Keenan estimates that over the past year, he's spent somewhere between $1,500 and $2,000 on dating. Despite spending a hefty sum on everything from drinks and food to tickets and Ubers, the 31-year-old Seattle communications consultant and content creator said the payout had yielded no real results: His relationship status is "nonexistent."

"A lot of times I'm spending money just to get to know somebody out from behind a screen," he said

Like many younger Americans, Keenan is encountering a harsh reality: Not only is the modern dating scene really tough , but putting yourself out there adds up. To be smarter about his romantic spending, Keenan has become more selective with whom he meets — and instead of immediately suggesting pricey drinks, he's proposing lower-cost options like grabbing a coffee or going for a walk.

As someone who's also been dating through whatever it is we've been doing romantically since 2020, I've noticed that my dating costs are going through the roof. There are, of course, the basic increases in just about everything, as anyone who's bought groceries or gas knows. In addition, new costs are getting layered on every day as the dating pool becomes tougher to navigate — relationship apps are barren unless you pay for access, and the new crop of exciting speed-dating events will cost you (if they don't sell out first).

In an age of increasing isolation , an intimate relationship can be especially valuable. And, pragmatically, finding a partner can have some economic advantages — after all, things are cheaper when they're divided by two. But the price tag to find the right person is getting higher. Love, in this economy, is increasingly reserved only for those who can afford it.

Bring in the dating coaches!

There's no magical financial formula for a relationship (sadly), but to sketch out the new cost of love, I decided to ask several dating coaches a few questions that could help me develop a relationship road map: How long does it usually take to find out whether you're compatible? How much should a date cost? Who is expected to pick up the tab?

The coaches said it usually takes about three months of seeing someone once or twice a week for most people to consider it a relationship. So that's at least 12 dates before getting into a relationship. Not every date is the same — costs and activities will vary by person, location, and what you're drawn to. Amy Nobile Messing, a New York City dating coach with a holistic and technology-based approach and clients aged 25 to 81, recommended a "mini screener date" for a first meetup before escalating to anything more.

"First dates should not be the traditional go out to dinner for four hours and spend a ton of money," she said. "They really shouldn't."

Damona Hoffman, a Los Angeles dating coach, similarly recommended doing drinks because clients could otherwise end up overstaying their welcome and shelling out a whole lot of money.

"First dates should be something short and sweet," she said.

After the first date is when the tabs get more substantial — a longer meal where you can sit across from one another and delve deeper. Daphney Poyser, whose Fern Connections specializes in queer dating, recommended dinner and an activity like mini golf, ax throwing, or cooking classes.

As things progress, another big question is who's picking up the bill — a decision that comes with a host of gendered assumptions and changing norms. Messing said that among her heterosexual clients, there's still an expectation that the man is paying for all the dates.

"If you're in a heterosexual relationship and you believe in chivalry, which, again, 95% of my clients do, then the man is paying, period, end of story," Messing said.

But the answer is not as clear-cut for same-sex couples, couples who don't skew toward traditional heterosexual norms, or younger generations.

"My younger daters, they're like, 'Of course, we're going to split the cost of the date,'" Hoffman said. "That's a huge shift."

Poyser tells her clients that everybody should expect to split the cost.

"If you like someone and they like you, then you should be willing to split the cost," Poyser said. Among Messing's queer clients, the rule of thumb has been that whoever asked the other person out or planned the date should pay — and they naturally trade-off as things progress.

So for simplicity's sake, in our road map, let's assume that you're always splitting costs, with the expectation that straight men will pick up the bill more often.

The nitty-gritty

Now that we have a sense of the time, shape of the activities, and share of the bill, we can get a sense of what dating costs look like for a 12-date plan. Of course, these numbers are all approximations — your favorite restaurant or activity might cost more or less. But to get to rough estimates, I tried to stick close to real menu prices and approximate how much costs have risen.

Since the coaches' first-date suggestions generally boiled down to drinks, I started the tabulation by looking at the average cost of a cocktail, which was about $12 in 2019 across major US markets. Adjust that for inflation, and it's about $14.50 in 2024 dollars. For alcohol-free drinkers, the average price of a coffee is about $6 in New York City, which is comparable with other markets.

"The cost of everything is more expensive," Hoffman said.

For movies, prices vary across the country. The average ticket cost $11.75 in 2022, the research firm EntTelligence estimated; round up for recent inflation, and the average movie ticket costs about $12, plus $27 for a large popcorn, a drink, and candy. The same logic can be applied to museums: Ticket prices across the country have ticked up to the $30 range. I chose the American Museum of Natural History as our museum date spot because it is, inarguably, a great place to go on a date. The cost of an adult ticket : $28 for non-NYC residents. I also chose a premium concert experience for our daters since those are less likely to get canceled than smaller shows right now . Pollstar, a live-music industry publication, found that the average ticket price for a tour of the top 100 performing artists was $123.25 in the first quarter of 2024, up from $95.63 in 2020.

Numbers got a little fuzzier when I looked at how much it cost to go out to dinner or order in. I chose my favorite date spot — Thai72 — as a menu example, and it tracked fairly closely with MoneyGeek's estimate that a romantic dinner out costs $96. Similarly, I used my favorite pizza spot — Mama's Too — to gauge the cost of a nicer takeout pizza and then added a Trader Joe's Caesar salad and a bottle of Josh rosé.

After they have a few dates under their belt, I figured that many daters clustered in too-small urban apartments would want to get some breathing room. After all, there's nothing like a day trip to figure out what longer-term travel with your partner might look like. I looked at the cost of driving from New York City to Hudson, New York, a popular mini-road-trip destination (and, conveniently, a great way to visit Business Insider's economic-data editor, Andy Kiersz, who helped oversee these calculations). For our later dates, I also included a few spicier ideas, like a visit to the board-game café Hex&Co., a pasta-making class, and a cheese tasting at Murray's Cheese, as fancier date activities.

With these estimates, it's easy to see how dating adds up: Our hypothetical dater is spending $650 to make it to the 12-date mark.

The estimates also don't take into account the subtler costs of dating. That could be as simple as the price of the commute to and from your meetup — which would cost you $5.80 if you took New York City's subway — or having to fill up your gas tank. The dating experts I spoke with also listed services their clients may want to invest in for dating, from hair and makeup to Botox and dating-app subscriptions.

Hoffman, for instance, said that beauty norms had shifted: Skincare and different types of filler, along with Botox, are increasingly seen as necessary parts of a beauty regimen.

"All of these beauty enhancements, people aren't really thinking about the cost of them, but many times the reason that they're doing it is for attraction," she said. "I consider that a cost."

Given these costs, I decided to incorporate a few of the major categories into the road map. An informal survey of salons across the country pegged the average haircut at $56, so add one of those to the tab for the three-month getting-you-know-you period. In a 2023 survey by the data-analytics firm Inmar Intelligence, one-third of surveyed consumers said they spent over $500 on beauty products in the past year — that works out to $125 in beauty-product spending, if we're accounting for around a three-month period. Meanwhile, an informal 2022 report found that the average cost of a full body wax was $152, and Cosmopolitan reported in January that low-end forehead Botox would cost you $300. Taken together, that could mean up to $500 more in beauty spending alone.

Modern dating also comes with a new cost: forking over money for dating apps. In a 2022 Pew poll of adults who were online dating, 35% said that they'd paid to use one. Messing recommended paying for HingeX — $50 a month — and Bumble Premium , which runs about $40 a month. Hoffman doesn't have a uniform recommendation for dating apps but said people should pay for what's important to them. Similarly, Poyser recommended paying for Hinge preferences.

"The average dater that only started using dating apps in the last five or 10 years has what I feel like is an unrealistic expectation of what they should get from a free dating-app experience," Hoffman said. She added: "A lot of the apps are breaking out the different levels of service, different features that you can pay for, and it's kind of like streaming television. You just pay for the ones that you are going to use."

You could also choose to employ a dating coach. Messing's services run $25,000 for a four-month program. Hoffman's costs range from $9 into the five figures; she said her most popular program was group coaching, which costs $2,500. Poyser said that she charged $200 for her initial one-hour session and then $150 for bundled sessions afterward.

After adding up all the direct and implicit costs of dating, the price of finding that special someone rang in at about $1,000 for around 12 dates. Adjusting for inflation, that would've come out to about $800 in 2019 — without accounting for the loneliness and geographical shifts the pandemic caused, where people are willing to spend more to find friends. Notably, the $50 paid version of Hinge that our coaches recommended rolled out in 2023, and pricier app offerings are a more recent invention all around.

And that's just the cost to get into a relationship. Even deeper down the romantic path, couples face the soaring cost of weddings — not to mention the rising price of being a parent .

What does that mean for all of us?

The daters out there might not be too surprised to learn that getting into a relationship is expensive — though even I was taken aback by just how much I'd been sinking into finding a partner.

But the rising costs of dating aren't just an issue for the lonely hearts of America, they also point to a growing problem for everyone in the US: The things that bring us joy, happiness, or meaning are all getting more expensive. Dinner out with friends is more expensive . Going on vacation is getting pricier . Owning a pet will cost you more .

Even those who have moved beyond the cycle of dating and into building a family are facing these price pressures. Research has found that marriage is becoming increasingly reserved for the wealthy and more educated. Some people are happily opting not to have children, while others are finding themselves pushed into a child-free existence because they can't afford to have kids. But even with the high up-front cost of dating, getting into a long-term relationship might pay off in the long run. Solo Americans often come up against what's known as the "singles tax": They're paying thousands more than couples to live alone and need to make nearly (if not more than) six figures to live comfortably .

Keenan, the Seattle dater still looking for love, is keenly aware of the singles tax.

"Bills are made for a household," he told me. "I'm paying the same amount on my sewer and my garbage and my gas as I would if I had four people living in my apartment as I do with one person living in my apartment. There's nothing that is intended to be comfortable for one person."

As things get more expensive, the singles tax gets worse — creating an ever-increasing price for singledom.

"Just because I haven't found my person, suddenly society's expecting me to pay more because I'm living alone," Keenan said.

But Keenan's still out there. For about six to eight months, he tried to just meet people in person — which, as he noted, is often cheaper. Bumping into somebody at a bar means they probably already have a drink, and it's less formal than a sit-down dinner.

Keenan's status, though, might be familiar to fellow beleaguered daters out there: He's back on the apps. It's a fate we all may have to resign ourselves to in the era of modern dating. It looks like those $12 first-date cocktails aren't going anywhere anytime soon (and they soon may be $20 cocktails). The only question is what new paywall might emerge in pursuit of a partner.
