Writing a good dissertation or thesis

The learning center team is at your disposal to assist you in your documentary research via our research assistance service ..

Step 1

Identifying your project

Taking the time to define the right topic is a very important step in the essay process. With the answers to the 3QPOC questions, you will be able to extract the concepts that will define your subject. Mind maps can also help you to have an overview of your project. In addition, it is essential to review existing research. This should allow you to see if there is enough material to address your topic, if its scope is realistic, and if anyone has already answered your question.

The Learning Center has student papers that have been awarded an A or B grade and are not confidential. From our search portal, select "HEC PhD Theses" or "HEC Dissertations and theses"  in the tab "New items-selections".

Step 2

Preparing your research

To begin, make a list of keywords using dictionaries, thesauri, encyclopedias, manuals, etc. Break down each concept into a series of keywords, search for synonyms or equivalent terms. Once you have defined all your keywords, we recommend that you use Boolean operators to filter the results, combining or excluding specific words from your search "(AND/ET, NOT/SAUF, OR/OU)".

You can conduct your research using the Learning Center's resources (databases, news articles, journals, books and ebooks, dissertations and theses).

Managing your bibliographic references

Citation management software allows you to keep a database of the sources you use (books, journal articles, websites, etc.) when doing research. You can then select them when you cite your sources in your written work and automatically produce bibliographies from the citations you have included.

The Learning Center offers an article on the use of citation management software: Zotero.

Step 4

Writing your bibliography

The bibliography is a very important part of your thesis. It allows you to confirm your knowledge of the subject and to recognize the people behind the ideas you have developed in your research. It also allows the reader of your work to deepen it by identifying the documents you have consulted.

The Learning Center has produced a guide to help you build your bibliography in a consistent and standardized way.

Step 5

Citing bibliographic references

Plagiarism is presenting someone else's words or ideas as your own without acknowledging the source. Thus, when writing your dissertation or thesis, it is important to indicate the various sources that were used to fuel your thinking. Even when summarizing or paraphrasing information found in books, articles or web pages, you must credit the original author.

To assist you in this process, the Learning Center provides a document on plagiarism and how to cite your sources.

PhD Thesis Defence

Participate.

PhD candidate, Sylvain Catherine,  will publicly defend his PhD thesis in Management, Specialization in  Finance.

Thesis Topic: Essays in Finance

Supervisor: Professor Denis Gromb, HEC Paris Co-supervisor: Professor David Thesmar, MIT (USA)

The three chapters of this thesis study households’ financial decisions over the lifecycle. The first chapter focuses on the decision to become an entrepreneur, the second on the choice to invest in stock market and the third on the value of pension entitlements. In the first chapter, I use French administrative data on job-creating entrepreneurs to estimate a life-cycle model in which risk-averse individuals can start businesses and return to paid employment. I find that unobserved benefits represent 6,100 euros per year, summing up to 67,000 over the average entrepreneurial spell. The option to return to paid employment is worth 82,000 euros to new entrepreneurs. In the second chapter, I estimate a life-cycle model of portfolio choices that incorporates the relationship between stock market returns and the skewness of idiosyncratic income shocks. The cyclicality of skewness can explain low stock market participation among young households with modest financial wealth and why the equity share of participants slightly increases until retirement. In the third chapter, I calibrate a life-cycle model in which the stock and labor markets are cointegrated and Social Security benefits are wage-indexed. I find that the certainty equivalent of Social Security for working households is 46% lower than the sum of future cash flows discounted at the risk-free rate and negative for young households. At the national scale, the risk-adjusted value of Social Security entitlements is 19.6 trillion dollars, which is 37% lower than the unadjusted value of 31 trillion dollars.

Organizational behavior award for PhD student Audrey Bélanger

April 23, 2024

PhD student Audrey Bélanger won the Best Paper Award in the Organizational Behavior Division at the Annual Conference of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada (ASAC).

This award-winning paper, which was co-authored with her thesis advisor, Jean-François Harvey, associate professor in the Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovation , was entitled Voice Behavior in Employee-Customer Settings: An Integrative Model of Strategic Framing and Resonance .

It discusses the strategies by which staff effectively communicate their ideas and concerns to their customers, and the main factors that facilitate or hinder such communication. This research integrates two theoretical frameworks in an innovative manner to provide us with a better understanding of a phenomenon that remains virtually unexplored empirically, despite being essential in the field of services.

This is not the first time this PhD student has won an award. In 2023, she received the Lieutenant Governor’s Youth Medal, and in 2022, while pursuing a Master of Science in Administration (MSc) degree at the School, she won the Most Innovative Student Paper Award from the OB Division of the Academy of Management, for a publication that was also co-authored with Professor Harvey.
