Fidaa movie review: Sai Pallavi is the heart and soul of this film
Fidaa movie review: sekhar kammula directorial fidaa has done something unexpected yet again with this film which is to tell a story from the female perspective. sai pallavi, who is debuting in telugu cinema with this film and while she is the heart and soul of the film, varun tej is the muscle..
Every movie has a central character around who the plot is built and Fidaa revolves around Bhanumathi (Sai Pallavi). She is the point of impact, and the effect forms the rest of the plot. She is beautiful, charming, headstrong and in her own words, “hybrid piece”. She doesn’t want to leave her country, or her father behind after marriage, but she falls in love with her brother-in-law’s brother, Varun (Varun Tej). Produced by Dil Raju, and directed by Sekhar Kammula, this film is a refreshing romantic tale.
Sai Pallavi has chosen a great debut in Tollywood. For the first time, we see the dancer in her, which is pleasing to watch on the silver screen. Then we have Varun Tej who plays the male lead. Initially, you might feel that the male character doesn’t have as much depth as the female one. You might feel that the movie is tipping to one side, and something is amiss.
Story/Screenplay:
Sekhar Kammula has done something that is unusual not just for Tollywood but in any film industry. It is to tell a tale from the female perspective. The beauty lies in the fact that the plot segues so beautifully with the idea that at the end, you end up falling a little bit in love with the characters. Especially Sai Pallavi. While she is the heart and soul of this movie, Varun Tej is the muscle that supports it all. Sekhar has done something unexpected, yet again.
As a director, it was a great move to cast Sai Pallavi. However, the one thing that irks the audience a little is the absence of a strong supporting cast. Yes, there is great camaraderie between Varun and his brother, there is affection between him and his new sister-in-law, but in an important scene, a conversation between Varun and his sister-in-law falls flat.
If a viewer had to go “fidaa” over something, then the music is surely it. Shakthi Kanth has done a splendid job and the music is just magical. Be it the romantic number or the very cheeky wedding song, he has given the film something that no one else probably could. And in combination with the cinematography, one must say marvellous.
Cinematography:
There is a lot of magic that can happen on the silver screen when the man behind the camera really understands his subject. It looks like Vijay C Kumar understands Banswada extremely well. Especially the shots of Bhanumathi and the rain look stunning. The attention to detail will awe you in places and amuses you in others.

Fidaa movie review: Varun Tej, Sai Pallavi-starrer has heartwarming moments but lacklustre second half
Fidaa is dubbed as a love-hate-love story
Thirteen years after making Anand , filmmaker Sekhar Kammula returns to familiar ground with Fidaa . The film is packed with relatable characters, a lead pair whose sparkling chemistry is bound to put a smile on your face, and a landscape which takes your breath away just by its sheer beauty and simplicity. In fact, Sekhar Kammula stages all this stuff so well in first half of Fidaa that it makes you wonder where this filmmaker had been hiding all these years.
Fidaa is the story of Bhanumati, a young girl from Banaswada, located in the hinterlands of Telangana, who dreams about living amidst people who are close to her heart. Her ageing father and elder sister Renuka mean the world to her, and she wouldn’t trade her life for anything else. Elsewhere in the US, Varun (Varun Tej), an aspiring neurosurgeon, lives with his elder brother and a kid brother. Soon, Varun sends his elder brother to Banaswada to meet Renuka after he spots her profile on a matrimony site. The rest of the story is about what happens when Varun and his family come to meet Bhanumati and Renuka.
Fidaa is dubbed as a love-hate-love story, which basically gives away the premise of the film; however, it leaves you with a strong aftertaste that perhaps Sekhar Kammula too might have had a love-hate-love relationship with what he had created. Obviously, he’s in love with the characters of Bhanumati, Renuka and Varun, and so, he invests plenty of time and energy in giving them well-defined personalities. Bhanumati is a firebrand and also a dreamer at heart, even though she might not acknowledge it; her elder sister Renuka is the voice-of-reason in the plot; and, Varun is the boy-next-door who is struggling to make sense of Bhanumati. This stark contrast in the personalities of these three characters shapes the film, while the rest of the characters walk in and out of their lives without distorting the dynamics of their relationship.
It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Sekhar Kammula fell in love with the character of Bhanumati and full credit to Sai Pallavi who strikes like a bolt of lightening with her screen presence. It’s not just the Telangana slang or the way she emotes throughout the film… What really makes Sai Pallavi the anchor of the story is how she captivates our attention by embodying the fears of a young girl who has to face the prospect of leaving her family, but at the same time, her strong-and-opinionated personality shrouds her fears. Bhanumati is the daughter of the soil, rooted in the local and evidently, Sekhar Kammula has nudged Sai Pallavi to become part of the environment itself. As a result, we get images of Bhanumati ploughing the field on a tractor, dancing in the rain to signify her celebrating the onset of monsoon, which also stands as a metaphor to her welcoming the onset of love into her life. And when she smiles, or even when she nods her head, you understand that Sekhar Kammula couldn’t have chosen a better actress than Sai Pallavi to play this role.
Varun, on the other hand, is good at heart and is the polar opposite of Bhanumati’s personality. Their symbiosis is like that of the Earth and rain. Both of them need each other to find true love and the long spells of silence between them disturbs their equation. Varun Tej is quite sincere in his role as a guy who just wants to talk the girl he has fallen in love with, even though she rejects him. And he strikes a great equation with Sai Pallavi which makes for an interesting watch.
Then, there’s the whole aspect of what Sekhar Kammula wants us to see and feel as the love story between Varun and Bhanumati blooms in the first half. He wants us to soak in the local culture of Telangana, their rituals during a wedding ceremony, their dialect, the lush green landscapes where the black soil looks ready to kiss the first rains of the monsoon, and we get to see all this in full glory. It’s visually alluring and amidst all this, Bhanumati and Varun open their hearts to each other. The first half of Fidaa is the closest anyone in Telugu cinema could have gotten to rekindle the warmth and love of Hum Aapke Hain… Koun! .
And then, when the narrative goes into the ‘hate’ mode, which is based on an ego clash between Varun and Bhanumati, the film begins to lose part of its mojo. The uncomfortable silence which the protagonists have to face doesn’t really make you root for the characters. Yes, we, as the audience, want them to put aside their differences because the hangover of their love story in the first half is so strong that it feels comforting. But their clash of personalities feels under-written or maybe Sekhar Kammula held back himself from going the whole nine yards to create something that’s outstanding. There’s pain and yearning for a loved one; however, this is something which we infer based on the situation. One could argue that this is as close to reality as one could get to depict a couple who is caught in such an uncomfortable situation; however, I would like to believe that, when someone could fill the characters with so much of sympathy, innocence and full of life, he definitely could have done a better job when it comes to building tension in Varun and Bhanumati’s relationship.
Having said that, this is not a complaint, but a result of the angst that one goes through after watching a film which should have had a more befitting closing. The climax feels rushed and the story itself needed better closure. We get what we want in the end, but it feels like a chunk of beautiful moments which have held the story together.
The film also finds its emotional core through a question which Sekhar Kammula constantly brings up throughout the story: What happens to our loved ones when we migrate? Do we necessarily have to put our ambition first before the well-being of our community or environment which has nurtured us over the years? Fidaa makes you think about all this and more. It’s a wonderful drama where Sekhar Kammula pushes you to dream a beautiful dream for 75 minutes at a stretch and then he wakes you up with a jolt. The reality pales in comparison with the dream.

Fidaa movie review: Break-up in TS, love in US
Cast: Varun Tej, Sai Pallavi, Sharanya, Sai Chand, Raja Chembolu, Rajesh, Geetha Bhaskar and others Director: Sekhar Kammula Producer: Dil Raju Rating: 3.5 star
Director Sekhar Kammula’s Fidaa is his first film in three years. His last film, Anamika, was a thriller, a remake, and a big flop, so he’s back to love stories in his latest, which has Sai Pallavi of the Malayalam film Premam making her Telugu debut opposite Varun Tej.
Varun (Varun Tej) is studying medicine in the US but comes to a rural village near Nizamabad to attend his brother Raja’s (Raja) marriage with Renuka (Sharanya). Here he meets Bhanumathi (Sai Pallavi), the bride’s sister, and they are attracted to each other. The newly-weds want to move to the US, so after the wedding they travel to Hyderabad by train to catch their flight to the US. Bhanumathi is with them as she is seeing off her sister. She plans to tell Varun that she is in love with him but before she can do that she sees something that she misunderstands concerning Varun. She refuses to even talk to him after that incident.
Varun goes back to the US and to his work, but he can’t forget Bhanumathi. He tries to call her but she refuses to talk to him. When Sharanya gets pregnant, she asks her sister to come to the US and help her out.
Bhanumathi and Varun meet again and most of the film is about how they work out their relationship.
Sekhar Kammula chooses to set his love story in a rural and then a foreign locale. Generally, his films are realistic and the actors look natural. Fidaa doesn’t have a great story, but the love story of a strong and independent rural girl of Telangana and an NRI boy is well told. The realistic moments, emotional scenes, and the simple romance of the younger generation is narrated in a very beautiful manner.
Kammula has put his heart and soul into this film. The rural Telangana background is authentic and the characters and not the actors come through. As in his early films, here too the female lead is a strong character.
The film has been shot on location so it’s more like people talking in a village rather than actors acting. After a long time you feel you are watching true Telugu cinema.
When it comes to performances, Sai Pallavi dominates. No one will believe that this is her first Telugu film. She gets the Telangana accent right and her expressions and manner of carrying herself throughout the film are natural. You see a witty, clever and charming Telangana girl instead of the actress Sai Pallavi.
Varun Tej fits the NRI role perfectly. He has improved a lot from his last film and acts naturally. Sharanya, has given a superb performance. Raja, as Varun’s brother, is decent.
Sai Chand is back in films after almost two decades. He plays Sai Pallavi’s father and makes his presence felt. Pelli Choopulu director Tarun Bhaskar’s mother Geetha plays the aunt. Satyam Rajesh elicits a few laughs.
Cinematographer Vijay Kumar has captured the greenery of Bansuvada village in Telangana beautifully. He is definitely a big asset to this film. The other highlight is music director Shaktikanth Karthik who provides some soothing music.
The second half of the film drags a bit and the finale has little appeal, but on the whole, Fidaa is worth watching and is definitely a strong come back for director Sekhar Kammula.

Helmed by Sekhar Kammula, Fidaa, featuring Varun Teja Konidela and Sai Pallavi, is an endearing love story. Produced by Dil Raju and Sirish under the banner of Sri Venkateswara Creations, the plot of the film is quite different from the usual love story that we often come across these days. The film, which was released in theatres on July 21 in 2017, has completed four years today. On the film’s fourth anniversary, here are five reasons you should watch Fidaa:

02 /6 Intriguing storyline
Sekhar Kammula is known for not making coming-of-age youthful entertainers. He likes keeping everything realistic and as unconventional as possible. The narrative of the film journeys through the life of a village girl Bhanumati, who falls in love with her brother-in-law NRI Varun hesitates to express her feelings with him as the rest of her life will be spent aboard.
03 /6 Sai Pallavi's performance
Sai Pallavi is one of the most well-rounded and impressive stars in Tollywood. The actress gave a wonderful performance in Fidaa, and her characterization was liked by the audience. It was a brilliant performance, and critics and award shows enjoyed it, as she was given the Filmfare Best Actor Award. Of course, she is also an incredible dancer. Her dance moves in the songs are unforgettable. When it comes to flawless dancing, no one can beat Sai Pallavi.
04 /6 Varun Teja and Sai Pallavi's chemistry
The lead pair chemistry was loved by moviegoers, however, at the same time, Sai Pallavi’s dance moves also grabbed attention. The two looked amazing together on screen and the film has too done exceptionally well at the box office, garnering over Rs 50 crore. Their amazing pairing in Fidaa makes us wonder and crave to hopefully see them together on screen again.
05 /6 Melodious music
Music was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the film. The album that has been created by Shakthikanth Karthick surely made a special place in the audiences’ hearts. Not only the film acquired cult classic status, but even the songs went on to become a huge hit, especially Vachinde, which makes the audience groove to its beat. Choreographed by Sekhar master and sung by Madhu Priya and Ramky, the lyrics of this song were penned by Suddala Ashok Teja. However, it was Sai Pallavi’s flawless and energetic dance that grabbed eyeballs besides its catching music.
06 /6 Supporting cast and crew
Fidaa sees fabulous performances by Sai Chand, Satyam Rajesh, Gayatri Gupta, Raja Chembolu, Saranya Pradeep and others. The technical crew includes cinematographer Vijay C Kumar and editor Marthand K Venkatesh. The film has a simple story, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been displayed uniquely. Thanks to its efficient and appealing screenplay, Fidaa leaves a mark with its stunning visuals.

Director : Shekhar Kammula
Producer : Dil Raju
Music Director : Shakthi Kanth
Starring : Varun Tej, Sai Pallavi
Shekhar Kammula is back after a long back with a youthful romantic entertainer called Fidaa. Starring Varun Tej and Sai Pallavi, let’s now see how the film turns out to be.
Varun(Varun Tej) comes down to India to get his brother married. There, he falls in love with Bhanumati(Sai Pallavi). As time passes by, love blossoms between the couple but they both do not disclose their love for each other. After going back to the US, Varun finally comes forward and proposes to Bhanu who in turn reject’s Varun’s proposal.
Why did Bhanu reject Varun’s proposal? What is the family drama behind this? and how does the pair end up marrying each other? That forms the rest of the story.
Plus Points :-
Fidaa has some beautiful moments in the form of comedy, romance and family emotions. Shekhar Kammula is in full swing this time around as he sets the breezy romance and adds some memorable family drama to it.
Varun Tej looks super dashing in the film. Even though his role will look as if the heroine dominates him but Varun’s calmness and the ease with his emotions make the film quite heart warming. This is the kind of film that an actor of his age should be doing and Varun is bang on this time.
As expected, Sai Pallavi is mind blowing in the film. Right from the first frame, she mesmerizes you completely. Be it her looks, Telangana accent and the way she carries the emotional scenes, she is a show stealer. Post-Fidaa, Sai Pallavi will be an even bigger rage all over.
All the supporting cast do well in their respective roles. The actress who plays Sai Pallavi’s sister is too good in her role and brings good depth to the film. Veteran actor Sai Chand is a quite memorable and gives an honest performance. Satyam Rajesh evokes good laughs.
Minus Points :-
The first half of the film is so good that one is bound to expect the fun and romance to continue which sadly does not. Even though there is good drama, the pace of the film goes down a bit.
The climax looks a bit hurried up as Varun’s change of mind could have been showcased in a more effective manner. The entire story is quite predictable so do not expect major twists and turns.
Technical Aspects :-
Dil Raju should be commended for shooting this film in a superb note. The Telangana culture is showcased in a stunning away and the realistic nature of the characters from the region have been shown well. Music by Shaktikanth is a major asset for the film. All the songs are set perfectly into the narration. Sai Pallavi and her dances are a dream in these songs. The camerawork is stunning as the beautiful and earthy visuals of both Telangana and US have been showed wonderfully.
Coming to the director Shekhar Kammula, he makes a comeback with a bang. The way he sets a simple story and narrates it with some good entertainment will be loved by the family audience big time. Shekar is at peaks when it comes to romance and his stamp is all over Sai Pallavi’s character as she is shown in a super strong manner who cares for her family and ambitions.
On the whole, Fidaa is one of the best love stories made in the recent times. The film has superb fun, good romance and moreover some moving emotions which will be loved by the entire section of the audience. The film is bound to do well in the overseas and A centers as it has clean entertainment. If you ignore the predictable story line, Sai Pallavi and Varun Tej will entertain you to the fullest. A must watch this weekend.

Sai Pallavi, who mesmerised audience with her subtle performance through Premam , has finally swooned Tollywood as well.
Her Telugu debut Fidaa with actor Varun Tej is receiving positive responses from viewers. The movie directed by Sekhar Kammula is an out and out love story. It seems after basking in hat-trick successes this year with Shatanamam Bhavathi , Nenu Local and Duvvada Jagannadham producer Dil Raju is all set to strike four in a row with Fidaa .
Interestingly, Sai Pallavi is seen dubbing for herself for the character of Bramharambha.
Plot: Varun (Varun Tej), an NRI residing in US visits India with his family to find a suitable girl for his brother. A match is fixed between Bhanumati (Sai Pallavi) and Varun’s brother. As marriage arrangements take place Bhanu and Varun develop feelings for each other. What happens then forms the crux of the story.
Here are the positives and negatives of the movie:
» Sai Pallavi's realistic acting
» Simple and feel-good story
» Emotional play from the director
» Slow narration
» Unconvincing climax
» Over dramatic sequences

Fidaa Movie Review
The plot line is too flimsy and simplistic; the climax is also a la Anand. The cinematography is flawless and the frames have a rich visual appeal. The music is in line with Shekhar Kammula's earlier films and although there's nothing special about the songs, they're not harsh on the ear either. The... (more)

“Fidaa,” translated as “Spellbound,” is a 2017 Indian Telugu-language romantic comedy film that made a significant impact in the world of Indian cinema. It was written and directed by Sekhar Kammula and produced by Dil Raju under the banner of Sri Venkateswara Creations. The movie features Sai Pallavi and Varun Tej in the lead roles and is particularly notable for being Sai Pallavi’s debut in the Telugu film industry.
The storyline of “Fidaa” revolves around the complex dynamics of a love-hate relationship between the two main characters, Bhanumathi, played by Sai Pallavi, a strong-willed village girl, and Varun, portrayed by Varun Tej, an NRI from the United States who happens to be her brother-in-law’s brother.
Principal photography for the film commenced in August 2016, and it was shot in various locations, including Banswada in Telangana, Texas, and Colorado. This diverse backdrop added depth to the film’s visual appeal.
The film’s musical score was composed by Shakthkanth Karthik, with cinematography by Vijay C. Kumar and editing by Marthand K. Venkatesh. The combination of these talented individuals contributed to the film’s overall quality and entertainment value.
“Fidaa” was released on July 21, 2017, and it received both critical acclaim and commercial success. Despite having a modest budget of ₹13 crore, the film managed to gross over ₹91 crore, making it a lucrative venture. The film’s success was not only at the box office but also at award ceremonies. It won four Filmfare Awards out of nine nominations and received two SIIMA Awards.
One of the most noteworthy aspects of “Fidaa” is Sai Pallavi’s outstanding performance, which earned her a place among the “100 Greatest Performances of the Decade” according to Film Companion. This accolade speaks to the depth and authenticity she brought to her character, Bhanumathi.
Moreover, the film was recognized as one of the “25 Greatest Telugu Films Of The Decade” by Film Companion, underlining its lasting impact and contribution to the Telugu cinema landscape.
In summary, “Fidaa” is a Telugu romantic comedy that not only achieved commercial success but also left a significant mark in the industry through its compelling storytelling, memorable performances, and its inclusion in the list of greatest Telugu films of the decade. It serves as a testament to the talent of its cast and crew and remains a cherished part of Indian cinema.

Fidaa Movie Review – Sai Pallavi Naitho Fidaa Kaiko!
OUR RATING 3/5
CENSOR ‘U’ Certified, 2 hrs 14 mins.
How is Varun Tej’s performance? Fidaa could very well turn out to be the film that Varun Tej and his career needed to take off but, and it’s a big but, it wouldn’t be the sort of success that would make him a star or increase position trade wise. He is delight to watch in few scenes but by and large is overshadowed by the Sai Pallavi show. In the second half he has good emotional moments and he is just alright in all of them. There is a bit of awkwardness in his body language (due to weight gain) which he needs to take care off as soon as possible.
The first half of Fidaa is vintage Sekhar Kammula film with his trademark written all over it. In fact, it won’t be an overstatement to say it is on par with the best film in his career, Godavari. The entire flow of the first half in terms of emotions is absolutely perfect. It gives us a feeling of a classic in the current movie environment where everything is formulaic and feels derivative. It’s almost too good to be the true type.
The problem comes in the second half when everything crumbles. All the freshness is missing and entertainment leads to irritation. The organic connection that one feels is completely missing in the second half. It feels stretched and natural charm is missing. Still, it is Sai Pallavi and to an extent the little chemistry built with Varun Tej that pulls us through. The music helps but one is left with a strong feeling of ‘what could have been’ if the second half was as good as first. Overall, Sai Pallavi and the first half alone warrant a visit to the theaters.
Drawbacks? Second half Repetitive drama
Did I enjoy it? Yes
Will you recommend it? Yes
Fidaa Review by Siddhartha
– Final Report:
Second half drags in parts and feels bit lengthy at times. Our full review will be up soon. Visit back for our frank review.
– Conflict point which is the key for second half of the film is not strong. That’s where the film starts losing the charm created in first half yet at the end it will not disappoint with awesome performance of the female lead. – Frequent rain shots in the movie explains why Sekhar Kammula thought of naming the film ‘Musuru’ initially. Even for wedding Sekhar Kammula chose a rainy day to show the difference which is not the usual case with other films. – BGM is good and makes you notice the good work. – Harsha Vardhan gets a very brief role.
– First Half Report:
Fidaa first half is all about some nicely captured feel good moments in typical Kammula style. Sai Pallavi’s Telangana accent brings the required freshness though there is nothing new. Overall it’s a feel good first half.
– Sai Pallavi’s dance in ‘Vachinde’ song is very graceful. – Bhanu (Sai Pallavi) is the main highlight of the first half. She steals the show with her energy and performance. After Premam, Fidaa will get her huge praise for her brilliant acting skills. – Varun Tej looks like he gained significant weight. – Show started in US backdrop. Our next update will be first half report.
US Premiers update: Fidaa Thursday premier in US opened with very decent numbers. A decent figure about $150k – $175k is expected from premiers. But with positive ratings all over the web Fidaa should collect a very decent sum in its liferun.
Fidaa live updates begin at 5.30 AM IST.
Fidaa : Preview
Shekhar Kammula’s ‘Fidaa’ is one of those luckiest films which has got a producer like Dil Raju who can give his films wider audiences and plan publicity in such a way creating a positive buzz around the film. The producer is a big backing for this film.
Leaving this aspect aside, this movie is very crucial for two individuals. One is the director and the other is the hero of the film. Varun Tej is yet to prove his prowess as a solid performer and establish himself as a reliable name at the ticket windows.
After the pitiful fate of ‘Mister’, this movie has become very critical for the mega hero. Being a love story with Shekhar Kammula’s mark, he might win huge fan base among the girls if he impresses them big time. It depends on the kind of role he’s got to do in ‘ Fidaa ‘.
For Shekhar Kammula, it’s like a comeback sorts of film. He is coming up with ‘Fidaa’ after three years and it has been a decade since he gave a proper hit like ‘Happy Days’. Once a sensation among the US audiences, the director lost his mojo with a couple of his previous films.
Coming to the ‘Premam’ heroine Sai Pallavi, Shekhar Kammula believes that she is the perfect choice to play the strong and rustic Telangana girl. But, she didn’t impress much from what we have got to see in the trailers. She didn’t disappoint, though.
We have to wait and see how she will be in the film. We know, Shekhar Kammula ‘s heroines are simple and have that earthy flavor. Sai Pallavi’s cute Telangana accent is definitely one of the attractions but that’s not enough. The full movie is going to tell us if the ‘Premam’ girl is impressive in her Telugu debut.
With the kick-ass ‘vachindey’ music number followed by the impressive remaining songs, the music is going to be a plus if the story turns out to be truly connecting. So, what is left to see if Shekhar Kammula has that lost mojo in him? That alone will decide the success of the film and if this film helps Varun Tej’s career. Wait for a few more hours for a full Fidaa movie review from mirchi9 team.
