In my entire life, my father has been playing all these roles without even complaining a single time or even without crying or getting upset. His only and foremost motivation is our smiling faces, fulfilled needs, and a decent lifestyle. He goes to work every morning and returns home in the evening with something to eat for us constantly without fail. He bought us new clothes every Diwali but never got himself even a pair of new shoes. His presence and influence have shaped me the who I am today, fearless, respectful, and independent.

From my early childhood days, I recall his comforting presence, that if he was there no negative energy could even come close to me or nobody could do any harm to me. My father’s love for learning has left a deep impact on me. He is a seeker of knowledge for me. His curiosity and enthusiasm for discovering new things have inspired me so much in my own educational journey. Also, these factors have made a great impact on my personal growth. He has taught me that learning is a lifelong journey and that knowledge is the only way to deal with all the complex situations of life. Apart from his wisdom and values, my father carries a great sense of humor. His ability to find joy and laughter in everyday situations has taught me not to take life too seriously. His laughter and humor have been a source of comfort during challenging times. I love the way he softly balances family and life, even though it pushes so many difficult situations in front of him. He never broke, instead, he gets stronger and responsible enough to handle these things, so that the bad situations do not reach out to us.

Essays About Dads: Top 5 Examples Plus 10 Prompts

Write engaging essays about dads with help from our essay examples about dads, including a handful of topic prompts.

Dads are critical pillars in children’s development. Like moms, their presence, especially in children’s early years, is critical in laying the foundation of their well-being and self-esteem that will determine much of their kids’ adulthood. Some people have great relationships with their dads, while others have complicated or strained relationships, or don’t have contact with them at all.

Being a dad is different from merely being a father in that the former has nurtured a more loving relationship with their kids. Becoming a father is a huge milestone in a person’s life. The child can enjoy their dad’s great sense of humor, fun attitude in life, and loving personality. Whatever your relationship with your dad, you can write a compelling essay to convey your experiences and share your emotions.

5 Essay Examples

1. 10 lessons i learned from my abusive father by suzanna quintana, 2. why some fathers become distant after their child becomes a teen by larissa marulli, 3. gay dads and stigmas by laura ferguson, 4. this veterans day, i’m searching for my dad’s army buddies before it’s too late by judi ketteler, 5. i have never met my dad – making peace with the past by james barnett, 1. my dad is my best friend, 2. spending time with dad, 3. the best lesson i learned from my dad, 4. modern roles of dads, 5. absent dads: a social crisis, 6. single dads on the rise, 7. dads’ rights and obligations in child custody, 8. what makes a responsible dad, 9. my dad: the disciplinarian, 10. becoming a dad.

“Between his rages, verbal abuse, emotional absence, and his way of using guilt and shame as a weapon, the rest of us were kept under control through what I later dubbed Operation Fear, his cold war campaign designed to silence all dissidents and maintain his place as a dictator.”

The author relates her struggles of breaking free from her father’s encumbering sense of being unloved. Although her struggle lasted into her late adult years, she eventually learned to accept and cherish lessons from her father that helped her become a better parent to her children. You might be interested in these essays about growing up without a father .

“Dad can have a really hard time getting used to his little girl now being a young woman who has romantic interests, and breasts and may no longer be into the things that she and dad used to do together.”

The love of dads has a lasting impact on a child’s disposition and outlook in adulthood. The problem is that some dads tend to be distant once their kids’ transition into teenagers. This essay helps dads preserve their closeness with their children during confusing times.

“…[G]ay fathers still feel the brunt of stigma, experiences that the researchers linked to states with fewer legal and social protections for gays and their families.”

Years after the legal acceptance of gay marriages, gay dads still endure discrimination. A research study uncovers this and studies influences that continue to perpetuate the discriminating environment.

“It was only in 2019 that my sisters and I discovered all the photographs our dad had taken of his fellow GIs — reading, drinking beer at cafés and tending to their military truck. Some are portraits. Some seem candid. All feel special.”

In this essay, book author Ketteler talks about her nostalgic adventure to learn more about her veteran father’s life at the barracks. This journey starts after uncovering old photos of his wartime memorabilia wrapped with mystery and brotherly love.

“If, for whatever variety of reasons, a dad isn’t present, physically or otherwise, then the child must look elsewhere for role models. I see being a role model as part of my life purpose. I need to be the role model that my dad wasn’t there to be for me. I must be what I didn’t have.”

A son who never had someone to call dad pens a letter to his deceased stranger-father. In this letter-essay, he puts out all the difficulties in meeting him only through pictures and never knowing how his life was. Yet, despite the letter appearing as an outpour of outrage, a surprising twist comes up when the essay shifts into a forgiving tone.

10 Compelling Prompts On Essays About Dads

Describe the best side of your father and share with your readers how he fits as your best friend. Talk about the things you like doing together and how he listens to you in times of need. Perhaps you enjoy watching movies together or going on annual trips away together. What are the other things that make you appreciate your father? Answer this question in the main section of your essay. End your essay with a conclusion explaining how a parent and a child can have true bonds of friendship.

Essays About Dads: Spending time with dad

Do you and your dad enjoy golf, camping, or hiking? Or do you prefer doing something indoors, like cooking or playing board games? First, write about the activities you and your father enjoy doing together. Then, for a more impactful essay, write about what a day of spending time with your dad looks like and your fondest memory with him.

Like our essay example, we hope you also have important lessons to carry on from your dad, whether by having a loving or complicated relationship with him. Write down the most important lesson your dad has imparted to you. You may have learned essential life skills like cooking or cleaning, self-confidence, or how to be independent. Detail how the lessons you have learned have shaped your perspective in life and what you are striving to do to embody his teachings into your life.

Diverging from the traditional perception of fathers as mainly financial providers, the modern definition of a dad comes in different shapes and sizes. First, enumerate the typical dads existing today — single dads, gay dads, blended households, step dads, and more. Then, find out how they are raising their children and how different are their parenting styles from those of traditional dads. Include interview research in your essay for an interesting and accurate essay.

According to the National Fatherhood Initiative , one in four children is without a biological, step, or adoptive father. In this essay, enumerate the adverse effects of fatherlessness on a child’s development. How do these effects influence one’s adulthood? Find research studies to support your answer to this.

Research from the Pew Research Center has shown that single dads have increased ninefold since the 1960s. Research this trend further and discover what factors drive single men to take on the enormous responsibility of fatherhood on their own. If you know dads who are single fathers by choice, their stories would add more life to your story. Also, tackle the options men have to be single dads, such as surrogacy or adoption, and assistance your state or country offers aspiring single dads.

According to the World Population Review , about 50% of married couples divorce. When marriages fail, what rights do fathers hold to continue being a father to their children? Find out what these are, along with a father’s obligations and penalties for not fulfilling them. Turn this into an argumentative essay and answer whether these rights and obligations are enough and how they can be expanded to sustain raising a child.

As modern times drastically change the roles of parents, dads have become more involved in child-rearing. This has allowed dads to nurture more profound relationships with their kids, breaking the image of a distant father who only gets to see his child after work. First, write about the qualities and actions that make a father a responsible dad. Then, add the importance of having responsible dads at home and what society can do to promote responsible fatherhood.

Essays About Dads: My dad the disciplinarian

The image of dads as a disciplinarian has often been perceived negatively. But beyond the punishments, discipline means enabling children to grow up well. In this essay, talk about your dad’s disciplinary techniques. Write about how he corrects bad behavior. Then, cite anecdotes to make your essay more lively. For example, share how your dad responded to a grave mistake you committed. Finally, write down how he punished you and what you learned from this experience.

Interview your father and try to capture his roller coaster of emotions and experiences as a first-time dad. Ask him what he felt like when he first held you in your arms, when you got your first fever and when he first brought you to school. Next, ask him how he is coping with the extraordinary demands of fatherhood financially, physically, and emotionally. Finally, ask him to give soon-to-be fathers a few words of wisdom. Share these experiences in your essay and describe your take on these emotions.

Essay on My Father (1000+ Words)

Typically, people speak of mother’s love and appreciation, and often overlook the father’s attention. Mother’s love is talked extensively around anywhere, in film, in series, and much more.

What we fail to recognize, though, is the power of a parent who always gets overlooked. My father is a gift which not many citizens see in their lives.

It’d be incorrect to assume that every dad is the perfect hero for his kids, and it is not the case. However, I will voucher for my dad without even any second thoughts until it comes to becoming an ideal man.

How different is my father?

As everyone wants to assume that their father is exceptional, so do me. However, this belief is not purely based on the passion I have for him but also on his character.

My father has a company and is very diligent in all facets of life. My father is one of those who told me to exercise still professionalism, no matter what kind of work I do.

Most notably, he has a pleasant disposition and always makes my mom laugh with his dumb shenanigans, and after 27 months of the relationship.

I totally enjoy this dumb side of him when he’s around his relatives. He does his hardest to satisfy all our desires, but he still retains strictness whenever the need arises.

My childhood memories about him are a stern, strict, or not very conversational man. He would crack its most funny jokes of Dad, and we’ll all laugh and smile.

He felt a persevering and robust sense of obligation for his own birth family and also his marital ones.

The meager paycheck that he always received would be shared between such two families, so when he was bad in currying favor or supporting himself, my father did not rise inside the ranks, so his profits remained very mirage until he passed.

This formally made us a low-income family, so our childhoods were thrifty, frugal, and austere. A little bit of money mattered a lot.

In spite of these limitations, my father has effectively prepared our futures. If his provident money was released during his retirement, he used the whole sum, plus a personal loan, to purchase a home and in the name of his young son. We had a roof above our heads and for the remainder of our days.

Why do I like my father?

Among the most amazing aspects of my father was the number of things he was involved in.

He’d spend hours from outside the tailor’s shop seeing him making shirts, and within a few months, he purchased himself the Singer sewing machine. From that day forward, all our clothing, along with the winter school uniforms, were sewn by him.

He taught himself carpentry and designed the sofa sets that we’ve been using for generations.

He got to learn dry cleaning and then after that, in winter, we did go to school smelling kerosene.

My father was a great chef, so he enjoyed the food. While my mother was immobilized by lymphatic TB, she must have prepared breakfast, lunch, or dinner for her family and in the morning until heading off to work.

Best of everyone, he was a talented guitarist, blessed with the vichitra veena. He had a Carnatic’ band’ of his own with such a flautist as well as a mridangam player.

Things I learned from my father

Slowly, I learned how much more of how I was influenced by who he is and. Like him, I’m never tired, so I’m always intrigued by everything else in my life.

I’m still interested in doing something positive or educational. I’m 2 two years younger now than he was while he died, so I began to learn how to play piano, appreciate search engine optimization, UX design, or drawing.

I heard from him every kindness is a frame of mind, not a wallet condition. The amount of nameless, faceless poor folks my father supported was long, which we heard only when he passed.

Never demeaning the recipients with such a handout, he encouraged them to reimburse at their pace and time but made saying they actually so, preserving their self-respect.

Without even talking about it, he taught me what something means to become a parent, and what it means to become a lifeless person.

My father as the source of motivation

I can proudly say that this was my father, who was the source of my inspiration since day one. In those other words, his outlook and personality influenced me together like a human.

About the same way, he still has a huge effect on the environment inside his own little ways. My father dedicates his spare time to have to take care of stray animals that encourage me to be doing the same thing.

My father has told me the essence of love in the shape of a rose that he gives to my mother every day without fail. This continuity and devotion encourage us all to handle them in the same manner.

All my experience in sports or vehicles, I’ve come from my dad. This is one of the few reasons why I want to be a cricket player in the future.

10 Lines on my father

  • He is a caring and obliging man who takes care of my whole family.
  • He is a talented engineer or a very hard-working individual.
  • He’s an articulate guy who answers all the questions smartly.
  • My father loves his own family, my mother, or every member of the family.
  • He retains a cordial relationship with our family, acquaintances, and colleagues.
  • He’s going to bring my sister or me to college or my mother for work every day.
  • Every day, he supports my younger sister in our studies and me.
  • He shows us proper manners , compassion, and the ethic of living.
  • My dad is my role model, and one day I want to be around him.
  • My father is, or is always, a huge inspiration to me.

My friendship with my father is summed up by a single occurrence. He wanted me to attend the IIT for becoming an engineer.

I decided to become a novelist, a career he disdained to have no future. Headstrong, in 1969, I left the train wherein my family moved via Delhi to Bombay even as the whistle sounded. I’ve been bent on enjoying my way of life.

My father, profoundly upset, cut me over without a country, saying that I should really help myself whether I was so optimistic about writing. But so did I, raising enough by writing night papers to cover my lease, college tuition, or food.

Six months later, my dad, moving via Delhi in December, met me to see how his powerful-headed son would do and saw that I had lived quite well without borrowing and asking. He was clearly swelled with pride.

My father hugged me, forgave me for one moment, used 400 rupees as a Christmas bonus to buy me utensils, a mattress, and other essentials.

Since that day on, he could happily say, “My son pursued his heart more than my head – see what a great job he did.”

About My Father:

Appa was born in Coimbatore, the second son and third child in a family of 11 children. His father, my grandfather was a stern man, a respected civil engineer who worked for the colonial British government.

Appa attended the Rishi Valley School in Yercaud, founded on the learning philosophy of Jiddu Krishnamurthy. There he learned the value of discipline, respect for hard work, honesty, responsibility and constant learning. He studied electrical engineering at Banaras Hindu University and went on to join Voltas Limited’s air conditioning division. He worked there the rest of his life, and was regarded as brilliant and a genius.

My childhood memories of him are as a stern, strict and not very communicative man. He’d crack the most unhumorous Dad jokes and we’d all grimace and laugh dutifully.

He felt a deep and abiding sense of responsibility towards his own family of birth as well as his marital family. The modest salary he always earned would be divided between these two families, and since he was terrible at currying favour or promoting himself, he never rose within the ranks of Voltas and his income remained quite pathetic till he died. This officially made us a lower-middle class family and our childhoods were frugal, thrifty and austere. A little money meant a lot.

Despite these constraints, Appa planned our futures successfully. When his provident funds were released after his retirement, he used the entire amount, augmented by a bank loan, to buy a house in his two sons’ names. For the rest of our lives, we had a roof over our heads.

Why I like my father:

One of the most remarkable things about Appa was the number of things he was interested in. In Calcutta, he would spend hours outside a tailor’s shop watching him make clothes. After several months, he bought himself a Singer sewing machine. From then, all our clothes, including winter school uniforms, were stitched by him.

He taught himself carpentry — and constructed the sofa sets we used for decades.

He learned dry cleaning — and from then, we would go to school smelling of kerosene in winter.

He was an outstanding cook, and loved cooking. When my mother was immobilized with lymphatic TB, he’d cook breakfast, lunch and dinner for the family in the morning before leaving for work.

Best of all, he was a brilliant musician, gifted in playing the vichitra veena. He had his own Carnatic ‘band’ with a flutist and a mridangam player.

Things I Learned from My Father:

I have slowly realised how much of who I am was shaped by who he was. Like him, I never get bored, and remain fascinated by everything in life. I’m constantly active doing something constructive or educational. I am today two years younger than he was when he died but have started learning to play piano, understand search engine optimisation, UX design and painting.

I learned from him that generosity is a state of mind, not a state of wallet. The number of nameless, faceless poor people he had helped was long, as we learned only after he died. Never demeaning his beneficiaries with a handout, he invited them to repay at their time and speed, but made sure that they did, thus restoring their self-respect.

Without ever speaking about it, he has shown me what it means to be a father, and the meaning of selfless living.

A single incident sums up my relationship with my dad. He wanted me to join the IIT and become an engineer. I wanted to be a writer, a profession he disdained as having no future. Headstrong, in 1969, I stepped out of the train in which my family was relocating from Delhi to Bombay just as the whistle blew. I was bent on living my life my way.

My father, deeply upset, cut me off without a paisa, saying I could jolly well support myself if I was so confident about writing. And so I did, earning enough through writing for the evening papers to pay my rent, college fees and food. Six months later, my father, passing through Delhi in December, visited me to check how his strong-headed son was doing, and saw for himself that I was surviving well enough without borrowing or begging. He visibly swelled with pride.

He hugged me, in one action forgiving me but also forgiving himself. He used the 400 rupees he had received as a Christmas bonus to buy me utensils, a mattress, and other basics.

From that day, he would proudly say, “My son followed his heart rather than my head — and see what a fine job he has done.”

Essay on Father's Day

The first superhero any child meets in their life is their father. In the growing age of children, they need someone who can be their role model. Father is the best example of a superhero. A father works tirelessly day and night for his family so that he can educate his children well and support his family. To give respect to this hard work, we celebrate Father's Day every year. On this day, we give respect and gratitude to our father.

If any child is in any trouble, the first person a child remembers is his father. This shows the importance of a father in anyone's life. Father's Day is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June every year throughout the world.

The Story behind Father's Day Celebration:

There are two major stories behind celebrating Father's Day.

The first Father's Day was celebrated in America on 19 June 1910 to honor the father of Miss Sonora Smart Dooh. Sanora's father William Smart was a civil war veteran. William Smart's wife died at the time of giving birth to his sixth child. He raised his six children alone after his wife passed away. After William Smart passed away, his daughter Sanora wanted to celebrate Father's Day on June 5, on the death anniversary of her father. She believed that all of us always respect the mother's sacrifices and emotions but no one pays attention to the father's sacrifices. Not everyone understands the importance of a father in life. In order to celebrate the life and sacrifices of a father, we should celebrate Father's Day. On this day, we can tell our father how important he is in our lives. For some reasons, it was postponed to the third Sunday of June.

Origin of Celebration

According to the second story, Father's Day was celebrated for the first time in America in Fairmont, West Virginia. The day was celebrated for the first time on July 5, 1908. It was commemorated in memory of 361 men, who died in 1907 in a coal mine explosion. Father's Day was officially recognized as a national holiday in 1972 during President Nixon's reign. Since then, Father's Day is celebrated every year on the third Sunday of June.

Father's Day is celebrated on different days in different countries. In countries like India, the United States and the United Kingdom, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. In Argentina, Canada, France, Greece, Ireland, Mexico, Singapore, South Africa and Venezuela, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Whereas in Australia and New Zealand, Father's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September. In Thailand, Father's Day is celebrated on 5 December; on this day the birthday of the King of Thailand is also celebrated. In Brazil, Father's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of August.

Modes of Celebration:

Everyone has their way of celebrating Father's Day. Many people go out on this day to eat good food. On this day, children give gifts to their father, offer them greetings, and give them cards and flowers. On this day, every child honors his father and offers gratitude.

Mother’s sacrifice is given a high position in every civilization and culture. However, the person who dedicates his whole life for the happiness of his children and his family should also get the same respect as the mother. The way we celebrate Mother's Day in honor of a Mother, similarly Father's Day is celebrated to honor Father's love.

This day is celebrated to express gratitude to the father. The father is the person who pays all his duty without expressing his grief and pain. After mother, if someone is very close to our heart, it is our father. The father's love does not look like that of the mother, but it is the father who makes us strong from inside. Our father gives us a lesson about good and bad in the world. We do not need to worry about anything as long our father’s hand is on our forehead. They always keep grief to themselves and give us happiness. We should never forget our father's struggles. We should always celebrate the sacrifice of father’s and give them respect.

The main motive of celebrating Father's Day is to remind and give special thanks to every father who has given a lot of dedication to their children. However, in children's lives, Fathers are the real role model for them, they are inspired by their father since childhood. This is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June every year.

Fathers’ Day Essay 800 Words

The only person I always admire in my life is my dad who I love. I still remember all my childhood memories with my dad. They are the real reason for my happiness and happiness. Because of who I was, my mother was always busy with kitchens and other household chores and these ‘dads’ celebrated with me and my sister. I think he is the best father in the world. I feel blessed to have such a father in my life. I always thank God for giving me the opportunity to be born into such a wonderful family.

He is a humble and peaceful person. They never scolded me and took all my mistakes lightly and very politely and made me see all my mistakes. He is the head of the family, and he helps all members of the family through difficult times. They share their mistakes and their successes in life to tell me. He has his own online marketing business, yet he never pressures or pulls him forward in the same field, instead he always encourages me with whatever I want to be in my life. He is a good father not only because he helps me but also because of the knowledge, the power, the helpful environment and especially in treating people fairly.

Father's Day is a day in the year when children give their father presents and gifts and one big thing, which is love. Father's Day is just one day, but what about each day of the year? Fathers' Day should be a daily occurrence because fathers are generous and do much to help their children.

Every father is a constant support system and mentor for their child. He's the one I always look up to when I find myself in trouble. My father has been leading me in all my major decisions in life. He is a hardworking and loving person. Dad loves movies. Whenever he gets time, he likes to watch an old movie. In fact, we are sometimes told who controls the television. But, deep down, we like to tease each other and play again. Dad doesn't like to do anything. Sometimes during the holidays, when he and my sister do nothing and do nothing, he gives us one job or another. And he is very organized and keeps all his papers organized.

My Dad - My Model:

Every father is a good example for his children. First of all, I commend your love of work. He is always there to help his mates, even if it is not his job. In fact, we may find him spending hours helping others. After all, my father is just a man. He does not like expensive things and lives a simple, peaceful life. Otherwise he does not scold anyone. I wonder if something is wrong with her because she takes everything in order and gives herself time to decide.

My father - My Friend:

My father is also my friend. I can talk about everything with my dad, even those who have the courage to talk in front of my mom. I know he should keep it a secret and give me the advice I need. He is the one I can count on not to see whenever I need help, and I know he will help me.

Importance of Father in Family

Father plays a vital role in the development of the family. He is actually considered the head of the family. However, I feel that fathers and mothers have a special role to play in raising their children. Although a mother is gentle, the father shows courage and strength to his children, who will later take him seriously. It may be difficult at times, but be sure to always benefit the children.

My father as a Source of Inspiration

I can proudly say that it was my father who inspired me from day one. In other words, his attitude and personality influenced me as a person. In the same way, he still has a great influence on the environment around his narrow paths. Dad spends his free time caring for the lost animals, which encourages me to do the same. All my knowledge in sports or cars comes from my father.

Conclusion:

There is no doubt that my father's role is important in my life. Your presence is important in maintaining equality and peace in my family. The father is the one who gets the bad daddy's badge and his denial of anything means a lot to the kids. I also respect my father and try to develop the qualities needed to be like him when I grow up.

I planned on confronting my absent father about his parenting. But when I asked to hear his side, I learned a powerful lesson.

  • My father was absent throughout most of my life, so I went to Ghana to confront him about it.
  • In Ghana, I learned about my father's past and understood his perspective for the first time.
  • Although we will never be close, the conversation healed our relationship and taught me empathy.

Insider Today

A few years ago, I visited my father in Ghana and asked to hear his story about why he was an absent parent . This conversation helped me heal, forgive, and transform how I view disagreements today.

At the time, I had a lot of built-up resentment and anger toward my dad. In my mind, he stopped making a meaningful effort to see me or show up for me after he remarried. He and his new family lived in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Finland — while my mom, my brother, and I initially struggled with being unhoused and being on welfare here in the US.

I dealt with a lot of feelings of rejection , which I'd reflected on and worked through in therapy during my 20s. But in my 30s, it all came back, and I needed to deal with it head-on.

I decided to meet with my father to talk things through

There were times when I'd be driving, and I'd find myself weeping, questioning what I'd done to cause him not to fight for me. It was clear his rejection of me was still affecting the way I move about the world.

During a leadership training program, my cohort and I discussed our origins. I shared with the cohort that I had an upcoming trip to Ghana, and I had plans to confront my father.

Politely, a cohort member raised their hand. "Hey, what would it look like if you took a different approach?" he asked. "We all have empathy for each other because we know each other's stories."

I felt my heart rate quicken and my jaw clench in defensiveness. Despite my defensiveness, his words planted a seed that I brought up with my therapist. Together, my therapist and I started preparing for how I would turn my "confrontation" into a "conversation" with my father.

When the time came for my kids and me to travel to Ghana, I asked my father for one-on-one time and broached the topic.

"Hey, Dad, I never really heard your story. What was life like growing up for you, and what happened between us?"

Related stories

My father told me about his journey with his dad, his custody struggles , and the interpersonal conflicts between him and my mother. Eventually, he explained that he concluded: "Justin will come find me when he's ready."

I also asked my father to share his experiences growing up

My father grew up in Ghana, and his own father was only around a fraction of the time. My father also left his entire family for boarding school at 14 years old, and at 16, he left Ghana to come to the US.

Hearing this story, a lump formed in my throat as I felt — for the first time — empathy for my dad. I wonder how he felt as a little boy.

Fully immersing myself in my dad's story wasn't easy. It was challenging to remove my biased perspective of anger and distrust. I pushed myself to engage from a place of curiosity and ask him questions as if I was a student.

Hearing my dad's story helped me understand

At the end of our conversation, I told my father I disagreed with his approach but understood how he arrived at his conclusion. We hugged, and my father told me he was proud of me, which I never heard growing up.

This conversation did not transform us into a father-son duo holding hands and walking into the sunset. My dad's decision not to fight for a place in my life robbed both of us of father-son experiences that we can never get back.

However, this conversation gave me access to my heritage, Ghana, which I'd previously avoided. This allowed me to get involved in social entrepreneurial projects, like working with an elementary school and hiring and training Ghanaian staff members.

It also gave me access to an incredible mentor, my father . Previously, I avoided my dad. Now, I actively seek him out, particularly when I need feedback on a project.

Perhaps most importantly, this conversation taught me a profound lesson I now apply to every area of my life. I learned that when we do not seek to understand and respect the person we disagree with, it only hurts us.

That day, if I had chosen to confront my father from a place of vitriol and anger, his rejection would still haunt me, and I would have never learned the powerful lesson that every person has a story that shapes who they are today.

St. Augustine man dies after setting himself on fire outside NY courthouse for Trump case

A man from St. Augustine set himself on fire Friday afternoon outside the New York City courthouse where jurors in the criminal trial of former President Donald Trump were being chosen.

Officials with the New York City Police Department identified the man as Max Azzarello , 37, of St. Augustine at a 3 p.m. news conference.

According to USA TODAY , Azzarello doused himself with an accelerant and set himself on fire around 1:35 p.m. across the street from the courthouse, in Collect Pond Park.

Officials said Azzarello was in critical condition at a nearby hospital and died later Friday.

USA TODAY reported the incident took place in full view of news cameras shortly after a full panel of 12 jurors and six alternates was seated for the former president's hush money trial. Witnesses told the newspaper Azzarello tossed flyers into the air before dousing himself in fluid and setting himself ablaze.

Witness: 'He pulled out a lighter. And he set himself on fire'

A witness who asked to be identified by only his first name, "Dave," told USA TODAY he watched the victim's actions with a growing sense of panic before the young man went up in flames.

"I heard this clap, and this fellow was throwing these papers into the air," the 73-year-old Manhattan resident said. "He had a can and he poured fluid around himself, and which point I thought, 'Oof, I'm going to see something bad here'."

"And sure enough, he pulled out a lighter. And he set himself on fire."

Max Azzarello manifesto: 'I deeply apologize for inflicting this pain upon you'

In a post on a Substack newsletter called "The Ponzi Papers," victim Max Azzarello said he had burned himself alive to draw attention to the U.S. political and economic system.

"My name is Max Azzarello, and I am an investigative researcher who has set himself on fire outside of the Trump trial in Manhattan," the post says.

Azzarello's manifesto took aim at Trump, President Joe Biden, cryptocurrency and the federal government.

"To my friends and family, witnesses and first responders, I deeply apologize for inflicting this pain upon you," he wrote.

Azzarello had lived about three years in a restored two-story apartment building on St. George Street in St. Augustine’s historic district, said Larry Altman, the property’s building manager. He said Azzarello worked from home, doing something online, and had moved in the past few weeks to a home n West Augustine.

”He was just a normal person, nice guy, easy to talk to,” Altman said, but said Azzarello had become focused recently on a belief that a world government was operating a Ponzi scheme against the interests of the public.

“Although I never had a problem with him, he didn’t like authority,” Altman said. “You can’t just not listen to authority and expect to make a change. I think his feeling was that was the only way.”

The Ponzi scheme concerns are underscored in federal court records from New York’s Southern District, where last April Azzarello filed a lawsuit against the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation and scores of other parties including New York University and the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The suit asserted the defendants “knowingly conspired, participated in and benefited financially from a decades-long fraudulent scheme.”

The case argued “the defendants’ actions have caused significant financial, emotional, psychological harm to plaintiff,” and listed injuries incurred as financial loss due to economic inflation; damage to personal security; psychological damage as a result of intentional media misinformation; and environmental damage due to fossil fuel emissions created in service of the scheme.

The case was dismissed without prejudice in October.

While Altman said he had never known Azzarello to be abusive to anyone, court records reflect moments when he was accused of strange, disruptive actions.

On Aug. 19, St. Augustine police were called to the Casa Monica Hotel about a complaint that Azzarello had eaten dinner in the building’s restaurant, then approached a wall in the lobby where a framed autograph of President Clinton is displayed and threw a glass of wine at it. The wine stained the autograph and surrounding wall, causing damage a police report estimated at $400-$500, according to a police affidavit .

Police and Azzarello were back at the hotel two days later, where an arrest report said Azzarello was “wearing nothing but his underwear , standing on the sidewalk holding a speaker blasting music and yelling.” He was charged with breach of peace and booked into jail but on August 24 he was arrested again on a criminal mischief charge involving damaging a sign at the front of the Little Free Library at 117 Bridge St.

He was placed on probation, court records show.

A man who lives in house close to Azzarello's old apartment, Richard Loud, said he does not know Azzarello but has seen a car outside he believed to be Azzarello's, notable for its abundance of anti-Clinton and anti-bitcoin stickers.

Azzarello's father, Richard, lives nearby on Keith Street. He was home Friday evening but declined to comment when a reporter approached him.

Aysha Bagchi, Kinsey Crowley and Bart Jansen of USA TODAY and Steve Patterson of The Florida Times-Union and Lucia Viti of the St. Augustine Record contributed to this report.

The Teen Trend of Sexual Choking

More from our inbox:, emergency abortions and the supreme court, our father, who led columbia, would be saddened today, hiring discrimination, trump’s own ‘fake news’.

A pile of bed linens on a night stand next to a bed.

To the Editor:

Re “ Why We Need to Talk About Teen Sex ,” by Peggy Orenstein (Opinion guest essay, April 14):

As a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst who has worked for decades with teens and college-age students, I’m disturbed but not surprised by the trend of choking during sex.

Choking is obviously very dangerous, and unfortunately, social media has made this once uncommon practice more mainstream.

Education is the key with both our youth and parents. Yes, sexual strangulation needs to be part of ongoing conversations about safe sex practices. There clearly needs to be more accountability about this behavior.

There is a line, a boundary, where rough sex, whether it’s consensual or not, crosses into danger, causing devastating long-term effects for participants.

Arden Greenspan Goldberg San Diego

While reading this essay, I was reminded of how feminist writers and activists waved warning flags about the pernicious effects of pornography on women back in the 1970s and ’80s. They published books and essays on the subject, marched in demonstrations and spoke out in the media. They were continually derided as prudes and censors.

Decades later, with violent porn pervasive online and a generation of young women subjected to the sadistic sexual violence normalized by porn, it turns out those prudes and censors were actually Cassandras.

I thank Peggy Orenstein and the researchers in this story for bringing new attention to the issue.

J. Jamakaya Milwaukee

I taught a course on human sexuality to college students during the AIDS epidemic. When I heard about sexual strangulation, I considered briefly: Should I link this practice to arousal and orgasm when speaking to these high-risk young people? I knew that many would then experiment. I chose not to mention it, but I taught them, through role play, how to verbally refuse inappropriate sexual invitations.

Today, I hope instructors in my position will discuss with their students sexual strangulation with a potential partner and help them practice responding to sexual pressure.

Pornography makes partners look willing. Evolution favored a strong sex drive. The planet doesn’t need it anymore.

Elizabeth Powell St. Louis The writer is the author of “Talking Back to Sexual Pressure.”

Re “ 5 Takeaways From the Supreme Court Arguments on Idaho’s Abortion Ban ” (nytimes.com, April 24):

Reading about the hearing at the Supreme Court, I was taken aback at the careful attention some justices paid to ensuring that physicians whose conscience precludes them from performing abortions are excused from violating their beliefs. But some doctors are being forced to violate their conscience by being prevented from performing an abortion on patients whose precarious condition might decline precipitously without such a procedure.

Being forced to refuse medically indicated aid, knowing that the dire consequences violate the Hippocratic oath to do no harm, is an affront to their consciences, which must be considered with the same attention.

Susan Swartz Philadelphia

Re “ On Emergency Abortion Access, Justices Seem Sharply Divided ” (nytimes.com, April 24):

You write that since the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, uncertainty about the parameters for legal abortion in several states has led to complaints about doctors being forced to “think like lawyers.”

I am equally concerned that complex medical decisions are being made by nine lawyers being forced to think like doctors.

Jon D. Morrow New York The writer is an obstetrician-gynecologist.

Our father, Michael I. Sovern , played a leading role in resolving Columbia’s 1968 protests. He served as Columbia’s only Jewish president, from 1980 to 1993, and helped negotiate a peaceful end to weeks of anti-apartheid demonstrations.

We cannot know what our father, who died in 2020, would do if he were still president, but we have no doubt he would be deeply saddened by what is happening at the university that he loved and served for more than 60 years.

We believe that he would not want politicians and outsiders not affiliated with Columbia to exploit sincere student protest for their own gains, and, as in the 1980s, he would want protesters to ensure that they do not keep the university from providing the excellent education from which he and so many others benefited.

Finally, we know he would agree that anyone expressing opposition to the Israeli government or Hamas should not make Jewish or Palestinian students feel attacked or unsafe.

Re “ Study Uses Fake Résumés to Measure Bias in Hiring ” (The Upshot, April 15):

The study on hiring discrimination in large U.S. companies, as reported in your story, highlights the importance of social capital in landing a job, especially for people of color.

The study found that even with equivalent qualifications, applicants with Black-sounding names were contacted by employers nearly 10 percent less often than those with white-sounding names.

In a world where such discriminatory hiring practices persist, the ability to build social capital — the relationships and networks that help open doors and advance someone in their career and life pursuits — is paramount.

Research shows that social capital — and in particular, cross-class relationships — is the greatest predictor of economic mobility. Educational institutions, from high schools to community colleges and trade schools, should prioritize helping students build social capital.

By teaching them how to build relationships, facilitating connections with industry professionals, creating mentorship programs that pair students with successful alumni, and, most important, teaching students how to make meaningful requests of those alumni, we can put more people on the path to successful careers.

Because opportunity should hinge on merit, not a name.

Nitzan Pelman Berkeley, Calif. The writer is C.E.O. of Climb Hire Labs, a national nonprofit teaching students and job seekers the art of building social capital.

Re “ Witness Recalls Burying Stories to Shield Trump ” (front page, April 24):

Finally, we have a rather compelling example of that “fake news” that Donald Trump has been ranting about for years.

He not only sought to bury damaging stories. It turns out that he and his fixer, Michael Cohen, working closely with David Pecker, the publisher of The National Enquirer, also concocted and released wholly untrue stories about his political opponents (for example, “Donald Trump Blasts Ted Cruz’s Dad for Photo With J.F.K. Assassin”). So says Mr. Pecker, under oath, in a Manhattan courtroom.
