Limited Access to the Internet: The Internet is one of the prime needs of today’s world. The Internet is where we can find information about everything under the sky. It is the most needed thing around the globe. Businessmen, teachers, traders, students, everyone is dependent on the internet for their work. No matter if you are a middle-class person or a millionaire, all you need is the internet, sometimes for your work and sometimes for entertainment.

If we talk about students, there are many uses of the internet in a student’s life. e-tutorials, college projects, exam preparations any many more activities can be done on the internet which can help students in their studies. But the fact that excess of anything can be harmful is applicable here also.

Here we will discuss the harms associated with the overuse of the internet by students.

Effects on their Mentality and Family Life

This is the most serious problem among students today. They spend the maximum part of their day on the internet and hardly have any interactions with their family members. This leads to weak family bonds. The students who spend most of the time surfing the internet end up with an unhealthy bodies due to lack of physical exercise, low grades in academics because they just keep on surfing useless things, and a distance from family members because they don’t have time to sit with family and talk.

Students ignore their health, wealth, social, and personal life. The only thing they bother about is being online. We can see examples of students getting mentally and physically disturbed due to internet addiction, for example, in 2018, a girl from Vietnam was addicted to Facebook and ended up in a mental hospital. Now she is under treatment. Another case happened in Taiwan where a student died because he played an online game continuously for 2 days without eating anything. There are endless cases like this happening with students due to the excess of the internet which reminds us how important it is to limit internet access for students.

Limit Internet Access Means Limited Access To Adult Websites

Students need to focus on their studies and not pay attention to useless and bad things. But on the internet, they can easily get introduced to porn websites. These kinds of websites are available in large numbers. There can be a chance that students can reach these sites accidentally and get addicted later. As students are not mature enough to understand everything, they can be a threat to the girls around them.

Students who are introduced to pornography at an early age can commit crimes and rapes. There are many cases where we can see evidence of these kinds of crimes by school or college students just because they get addicted to these bad websites. Sexual predators are chasing young school boys and girls and pretending to have the same hobbies and finally lure them into the world of pornography. There are many cases of lost and exploited young students due to these predators. These crimes are another reason to limit Internet access for students.

Physical Harms

The overuse of the internet is physical harm for students. Students are the future of this world and they must stay healthy to focus on their studies and become responsible citizens on this earth. With the excess of the internet, we can see many students spending hours in front of their computer screens. They keep on playing online games and chatting on social sites. this leads to their back pain, muscle weakness, eye problems, and many other posture-related issues. All these physical issues directly affect their studies and make them lazy. The Internet is a web where students easily get addicted and make their life hell.

The Social Life is Affected

A student needs to have a social life, make friends, and have face-to-face interactions but due to the overuse of the internet, these interactions have been lost somewhere. The Internet is famous for meeting new people and making new friends but they have nothing to do with the people around us. Students get addicted to messaging and virtual communications rather than going out and meeting friends. This affects their social life and they no longer find it comfortable to have face to face interactions. The students are lacking communication skills and going away from their relationships and all the blame is on the excess of the internet. If we observe, we can find endless such cases near us where students are risking their future. It is important to limit internet access for the students to save their social life also.

Limited internet access prevent the cheating problem

The students getting excess of the internet can lead to cheating. The fact that the internet has all the information can be used negatively by the students. They use search engines for finding the answers to their question during tests which lead to false results. Many schools have banned the use of mobile phones and the internet inside the school so that students can focus on their classes rather than surfing. This also disables students to achieve better grades with their hard work. The reduction in internet use can lead to awareness among students and prevent the cheating problem.

Cheating is not only about cheating in examinations but there are many cases where students are hacking the school websites and changing the grades and altering the student’s information. They hack their school websites to know the assignments and find their answers. In 2017, there was a case where a former student hacked his alma mater and changed his grades. The student was arrested but this is the time to think about what leads to all this?

Dangerous games like Blue Whale, Momo, etc are also part of the internet. They target students and young children to lure them to do useless tasks and kill themselves in the end. They do friendship with the students and after getting all the information and understanding their weaknesses, attack them emotionally, and blackmail them.

In the year 2017-18, there were countless cases where students committed suicide due to Blue Whale and Momo. These kinds of websites are a threat to today’s youth. the students are more prone to exploitation and luring which makes the internet a very unsafe place for them.

There is nothing more important than saving students from getting lured by frauds, cheating, and getting addicted to pornography. They need to have a normal physical and social life. Most importantly, students should focus on their studies rather than anything else. All this can be achieved only by reducing the internet access for the students. Although the internet is a very useful thing there are many harms also. It is better to allow students to use the internet for a limited time only so they do not get time for any useless online activity. The school is the best place for the students to learn, there is no need to search for every small thing to search on the internet. If we encourage students to search for books rather than the internet for everything, it can lead to a huge change.

Internet Access Must Be Limited To Students

In my argumentative essay I discuss if the Internet should be limited to students. It is already limited in terms of restricting students from being able to view websites that promote a conservative point of view, and it is restricted from access to websites on illegal activities. Many colleges have also banned any form of sharing or torrent website, but should Internet be limited even further. Should students be banned completely from seeing the right’s perspective on things?

Many would argue that students are already too heavily restricted from seeing the political right’s point of view, but I feel it should be restricted further. Students should be given the leftist liberal viewpoint and no other. If students are able to go online and see a right-wing opinion, then they may start believing that being right-wing is the best. They may start to think that things such as homelessness matter more than equality. Feelings are not the most important thing on the planet, and students need to understand this, which they may not if they see right-wing material. It is better that students only see leftist websites with no access at all to anything on the right wing, otherwise students may start voting republican instead of democrat. Students are already restricted to mostly leftist reading and research material, but this should be stretched further to ensure no right-wing or middle-political website is available at all. This may also include restrictions on certain social media platforms. If a social media platform is not a strong leftist believer, then that social media platform may have been infected by right-wing brainwashing and is therefore damaging to a student’s mental health. (Powers, 2015)

Maybe Internet access shouldn’t be as limited to things such as adult material in college. After all, students are adults, and adult reproductive acts are common with students. I do not feel that it is so terrible that students see adult content via student Internet services. Obviously, a student should be restricted from viewing such material in classroom unless he or she is working on a project that involves adult material. However, access to such material shouldn’t be restricted when a student uses college Wi-Fi. For example, many students study in their college dorms, and they shouldn’t be restricted from seeing adult material in their college dorms. The human expression of sexuality shouldn’t be removed from the college campus. It restricts the rights of a student if he or she is unable to watch adult material. Student’s freedoms of expression are at risk if a student is unable to see people conducting the act of love. Plus, people may become a little odd if they are not exposed to any sort of adult material, and they may be surprised when they see the real thing. (Latimes, 2016)

The Internet is already restricted in college campuses. Colleges already have restrictions on their Internet services so that students cannot access certain websites. Some of these restrictions come from pressure from publishers who do not want students downloading copyrighted material via college Internet systems. Most restrictions come from the need to restrict what a college student reads and sees in terms of their political ideology. My argumentative essay proved that these restrictions should be extended and strengthened to ensure no student is ever exposed to the right’s point of view, otherwise students will be brainwashed into voting for the right. My essay also proved that students should be allowed to view adult material because they are adults and it is part of their rights of freedom of expression. My essay also showed that current restrictions on criminally motivated websites should probably stay in place because there is no need for students to learn about criminal activity, and some websites may offer dangerous advice on how to become a criminal, and that should be avoided too.

Millions of students have limited access to the internet at home, leaving them struggling to access interactive online lessons and forcing them to find offline workarounds on devices lacking storage for video and other resources. Today, devices and education technology tools are more integrated into education than ever before, and learning opportunities happen not just at school, but at home and everywhere in between. In this landscape, the ability to work online and offline is key so that learning can continue regardless of a student’s ability to connect to the internet.

In the third in a series of Accelerate Learning Kits from Microsoft Education, “ Accelerating Learning for Students with Limited Internet Access, ” the authors compare how Microsoft Windows 11 devices and Chromebooks support offline access to educational content and material. Their finding: when comparing based on factors such as access to learning content, accessibility, on-device storage, and the ability to create and edit content, they found that Windows 11 devices provide a better experience for learners than the equivalent experiences on Google Chrome OS.

In a study conducted by Michigan State University in 2020, researchers found that students who have no home access or rely upon cell phone data plans have the digital skills equivalent of a three-year deficit when compared to their peers with home internet access 1 .

According to UNICEF, up to 1.3 billion children and young people worldwide have no access to internet at home 2 . This issue disproportionately affects students of color, those living in poverty, and in rural communities. Additionally, a 2020 study by Michigan State University found that students who have limited or no internet access at home can fall up to three years behind classmates with full access, have a lower grade point average, score lower on college admissions tests like the SAT, and are less likely to pursue a college degree. 3 This highlights the importance of ensuring that students have equitable access to tools and that there’s flexibility for those who may not have consistent access to the internet outside of school. 

For the latest Microsoft learning kit comparing Windows 11 devices and Chromebooks, researchers created a learning scenario in which they used identical versions of a presentation to compare the process a student would complete to access and edit learning materials while disconnected from the internet. This included setting up offline access to the file, disconnecting the internet connection, opening and making changes to the presentation, and then reconnecting and accessing the updated online file. The comparison of the Windows 11 and Chromebook processes can help educators see some of the benefits Windows 11 devices deliver for students, including simpler and faster setup of offline capabilities.

Evaluators noted that in the side-by-side test, Microsoft Office was a faster, easier, and richer experience for students than the comparable solution. Beyond simply editing and saving files, students with limited online access can benefit from using the built-in flexibility of features such as translation and Accessibility Checker, which work online or offline.

Since schools made the unexpected and rapid shift to online instruction in 2020, existing inequities in connectivity have highlighted the challenges of making sure that all students can participate in digital learning. Microsoft Education is committed to developing solutions to advance equity in learning. And the built-in, accessible, equitable, easy-to-use tools in the Microsoft Office suite provide students the opportunity to focus on learning and explore their academic interests without having to worry about connectivity.

When examining the realm of student life one cannot escape acknowledging the pivotal role played by the Internet – an expansive network that empowers individuals with unhindered access to information exchange, communication channels, and diverse online activities. Indeed, this unprecedented connectivity has irrevocably altered how we approach learning methodologies or engage with professional environments or interpersonal relationships. To foster a desired equilibrium between virtual engagement and other aspects of life; carefully monitoring and regulating students’ access to the Internet becomes important.

In the world, most people use the Internet for reading, learning, listening to videos, communication, and many other purposes.  However, people use the Internet for personal purposes; there are some wrong things also happening on the internet. In this essay, we will see how the Internet should be used by the students, its advantages and disadvantages, and so on.

Meaning of Internet:-

The word Internet would be separated as Inter (between one to another) + net (connection). Therefore, the word ‘ Internet ’ means a connection that is linked from one person to another person (communication).  According to Communication, there are two types: Personal Communication and Mass Communication. Apps such as Whatsapp, Zoom, Webex, etc… Uses both Personal and Mass Communication.  

Internet – uses and Advantage to today’s world:-

Nowadays, there are Online classes, online exams and online competitions are going on with the help of the Internet. It is used in schools, offices, etc.  In schools, Whatsapp Messenger, the Messaging and Video calling app which is used for Chatting with friends is now used in schools for educational purposes. Including Whatsapp Zoom, used for Meetings, and chatting is used for Official and Personal Meetings. These apps run with the help of the Internet.  Also, other than these, many apps and web are conducting using the Internet. Therefore, the Internet is useful and more advantageous in Today’s world.

Disadvantages and Limited use of the Internet:-

However, the Internet is used for Official purposes, it has some disadvantages too.  Internet should not be used regularly.  It should have a limit.  The story written by zac O’yeah tells about the use and misuse of the Internet with a Girl.  In that story, a girl named Shree always talks with her school friends about their personal matters.  One day, they were talking about their personal matter, she always says about food, her friends laugh at her and she decides that she would never talk with her friends.  Then she decides to give a friend request.  After a few minutes, a girl named Chaitra is as same as her age. After a few days, she could not able to focus on her studies. She says the truth to her parents.  Then the next day, she and her aunt approach the Cybercrime officer, and the officer says that she wanted to check the computer. In this story, the author tells us not to communicate with persons who do not know us.  It will affect your studies and the future also. Even though the Internet is used for educational purposes, it should have a limit.  If we continuously use the internet, it may lead to physical problems and mental problems.  It can also lead to death.  So, we should have a limit to use the Internet. 

Students –future controllers:-

All of them know that Students are the future citizens and protectors of the country.  Before students are going to rule the next generation, we have to know the correct way to use the Internet and also teach the upcoming Generations about the correct use of the Internet otherwise the country won’t go in the right way.  We should avoid more use of the Internet. We should teach them to do the correct use of the Internet. 

Conclusion:-

Students should use the Internet but it should be used for good purposes like education, reading, writing, etc. So, I will conclude that students should get only limited access to the Internet.

This addiction is not going to stand them in good stead. This is going to deprive them of physical and mental strength that one gets from playing outdoor games and reading books.

The elders must play a proactive role in stopping them from going astray. The need of the hour is to take precautions and cautions in the use of internet by children. The teachers and parents must teach children the art of using internet wisely. The Government must make some internet regulatory strategies to keep the young children away from the negative influences of the internet. Failing to do so is surely going to have repercussions.
