Ecofeminism: A Study at the Roots of Gender Inequalities

Profile image of Dipanwita Pal

2021, Scientia Moralitas Conference Proceedings, held on April 18-19, 2021 at Washington DC, USA

Ecocriticism is, as put forward by Diamond and Orenstein, 'a new term for ancient wisdom'. It is a value system that explores the connections between androcentrism and environmental destruction. The theory emerged from various social movements, from both activist and academic fields during the 1980s. Ecofeminism, as a movement, developed from antimilitarist action movement in the United States while founding a political platform for the US Green party. The term was first used by Francoise D'Eaubonne (1980) in her article "Feminism or Death." From the mid-1970s, ecological critique turned to play a significant role in the women's movements worldwide.

Nature is the man’s nucleus cohort. It provides incalculable alleviation to the civilization. Women are associated with the nature of primordial classical mythology. They dynamically took steps to manage the full blown collision of climatic amendment over the environment. Nature is feminized because it acquires the virtues of women. The campaign of Ecofeminism associates the ideology of feminism with ecology. The phrase concocted by the French feminist Francoise d’Eaubonne in the year 1974. This philosophy intertwines the abuse and dominance of women with that of the nature. Ecofeminism is considered to be the embryonic proclivity in contemporary literature.

The concept ‘Eco-feminism’ originates from last three decades which cuts across two critical perspectives specifically ecology and feminism. The prefix ‘Eco’ hails from ecology which is the branch of biology that studies the relationship between the biotic and the abiotic factors of earth or it means examining and analyzing the relationship between the living organisms with their environment. The word ‘ecology’ evolves from the natural environmental system of biological sciences. It is social, economical as well as biological movement to study how man is continually polluting and contaminating the earth by causing various pollution i.e. land pollution, air pollution, water pollution, thermal pollution and causing demolition, devastation, destruction and extinction to the natural system thereby threatening the basis of life. Feminism being a complex movement of political, social, economical, ideological and philosophical ideas with multiple layers focuses on the empowerment of women....

Aramand, Anne. "Can women have it all?| Hesitant feminism in American women's popular writing." Thesis, University of Massachusetts Boston, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1550547.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins are two of the bestselling series of our generation. These series are meeting widespread popularity just as the contemporary feminist debate of: "Can women have it all?" is occurring around the country. Although Twilight and The Hunger Games are not considered overtly feminist texts, they have emerged in a time when women are reexamining the possibility of empowering themselves both in the public and the domestic sphere. Meyer and Collins have introduced female protagonists that deal with precisely this issue.

First, I will be outlining why cultural studies are important to discussions of popular literature, as argued by both Jane Tompkins and Cathy N. Davidson, especially in terms of female readers and writers. I will also be exploring the bestselling works of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women and Jacqueline Susann's Valley of the Dolls which emerged during the first and second waves of feminism and how they expressed a hesitation to give women a happy ending outside domesticity within their respective historical contexts. Next, I will review the current "lean in" culture of the third wave of feminism. I will also show how both Twilight and The Hunger Games continue the pattern of female protagonists that cannot be empowered unless they are wives and mothers. Finally, I will analyze how my own creative writing has been affected by cultural debates involving women's roles. Popular women's writing that emerges in the context of major feminist moments in American history shows ambivalence towards empowering women outside the home. This ambivalence is also reflected in my own writing through poetry. By first examining the work of best-selling women writers in the last two centuries and then analyzing my own writing in concurrence with the evolution of feminist ideals, I will show that women writers display a hesitant feminism despite emerging alongside progressive cultural moments in American history.
