Professional profiles, which are frequently referred to as personal statements, personal profiles and executive summaries, are short summaries at the top of CVs.

The goal of your professional profile is to provide insight into who you are as a professional and how you can add value.

Keep your personal statement concise and focus on the most relevant details. As an accountant, you may want to touch on your proficiency with advanced tools or your track record of improving processes.

Versatile, analytically-minded accountant, with over 14 years’ experience working for global companies with revenues in excess of 100 M. Recognised as an influential leader, with experience managing teams of accountancy professionals and fostering collaborative, positive workplace cultures.

Proven track record of maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements and general accountancy standards, as well as internal protocols. Proficient with multiple accounting tools, including EnterpriseOne (E1), NetSuite, Momenteo, Wave Accounting, QuickBooks and Xero.

Including a professionally formatted skills section quickly draws attention to what you can bring to the table. It can make your CV stand out and show recruiters why you’re a perfect fit for the job.

Highlight 9 or 10 of your strongest skills. Avoid including too many as this will dilute the section and the skills won’t stand out as much.

When detailing your qualifications, include the name of your qualification, followed by the school you attended and the dates of study.

How long should accountants’ CVs be?

There are no hard rules about CV length, but two pages is considered the optimal CV length.

Those with little experience would be recommended to opt for a one-page CV as they often don’t have the content to fill two pages.

Those with more experience often go with a three-page CV as they have a significant amount of achievements and skills that they want to get across. Two pages sometimes doesn’t offer enough space for those with a great deal of experience.

However, try not to exceed three pages. CVs over three pages usually make for a poor reading experience and the key details can be difficult to locate.

This should be a detailed outline of the work you have conducted throughout your career, listing your technical responsibilities gained through practical experience. Employers will not assume your knowledge – you must illustrate this clearly. Do not be fooled by the suggestion that CVs should be limited to two pages – this is wholly irrelevant to professions which require evidence of responsibilities undertaken. Preparation of month-end management accounts to strict deadlines inclusive of P&L statement, fully reconciled balance sheet and debtor/creditor analysis

This section is not essential to include, but you may wish to depending on the role you are applying for. It can be a useful chance to show a little more of your personality. However, be warned this can be very subjective, so ensure anything listed here reinforces your application, and the idea that you’ll be the right fit for the role. If you don’t have any real relatable hobbies, it is best to omit this section. Certifications 

As an accountant, you’ll know the importance of being fully qualified or certified to practice your profession. We recommend including certifications or qualifications in the education section, however you can include them in the professional profile, too. This can attract and engage employers and let them know that you’re an ideal candidate right away. This is especially important when applying for more advanced accounting roles, where qualifications are mandatory and expected. 

Employment History

Your employment history section should list your previous job roles and your professional experiences. Potential employers like to see applicants with a history of relevant job positions that would support their ability to fulfill their new potential job role. Be sure to list previous jobs and internships in order of most recent to least recent, and try to only include relevant job positions. The language you use here is also important, so it’s best to use descriptive and positive words when describing your professional history. Try to use specific numbers, facts and figures where possible!

As discussed earlier, many accounting positions will require formal qualifications and certifications. Academic qualifications are also often essential, and employers will often assess academic credentials when reviewing your CV. You’ll want to include your academic certifications and accolades in this section in order from most recent to least recent, just like you did in your employment history section. For example, if you have a Master’s degree in Accounting and a Bachelor’s degree in Business, you’ll want to list your Master’s degree first. If spacing permits, you can also include any relevant academic achievements and milestones.

Finally, in your skills section, you’ll want to convince potential employers that you’re the best candidate for the job by listing concise skills relevant to the accounting role you’re applying for. You can list hard skills, such as financial report creation and auditing, or more soft skills such as problem-solving and communication skills in this section. Provide context by giving a brief overview of your previous employer, your role or the department you worked within.

Key responsibilities

Bullet point your responsibilities within a role, including who you interacted with, project involvement and any additional duties taken on.

  • Receiving and processing all invoices, expense forms and requests for payment.
  • Preparing balance sheets and management reports

Key achievements

Demonstrate the impact you had within previous employments by documenting your achievements .

  • Obtained an admiration certificate from an external customer for ‘Excellent Customer Service’ while dealing with the business’s auditing.

Towards the end of your CV list your qualifications, making your accounting studies a focal point such as ACA, AAT, CIMA or accounting degrees.

Then document any additional qualifications if you have any space left.
