7 awesome science lab decoration ideas on a budget

by Katrina | Jul 25, 2022 | Science | 1 comment

As we head towards a new teaching year (for those in the States) or another term (for me in Australia), thinking about science lab decoration can bring on some anxiety as you think about how much money it is going to cost you. As a beginning teacher, I made the mistake of thinking I had to buy a lot of things to make my lab look awesome. Over the years, however, I have learned how to be creative in my use of resources in order to decorate the science lab without costing me too much money.

Grab a coffee and relax while I share my 7 top science lab decoration ideas on a budget!

7 science lab decoration ideas on a budget

1. have students create artwork.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to make displays or add colour to the walls.

Having students create pieces that also act as science lab decorations not only brightens the room, but also allows students to have a sense of ownership over the room.

Some ideas are:

  • Lab safety rules posters
  • Hanging mobiles
  • Subject-specific posters e.g. animal adaptations
  • Famous scientists posters
  • Get to know me bunting (freebie below)
  • Models e.g. solar system, animal vs plant cells.

2. Utilize freebies

There are actually a lot of great free resources available for science lab decorations. It is worth doing a search for free posters and displays on sites such as teachers pay teachers.

Here are a couple of freebies from me:

  • All about me science bunting activity

This activity is great to start the year and get to know your class. Plus it adds to your science lab decorations as DIY bunting!

  • Science variables posters

Variables are always a tricky topic that students often get confused. These posters are perfect for reminding students all year round about the different types of variables.

And here are some awesome science lab decoration freebies from some of my teacher-author friends:

  • What’s my grade posters – Beakers and Ink
  • Rainbow Hand Signals Posters – The Focused Teacher
  • Analysing Data Anchor Chart – The Science Cubby
  • Science Posters Freebie – Brower Power Science
  • Teacher Toolbox Labels Editable – North Texas Kids Outside

FREE All about me in science bunting

Enter your email address here and I'll send you a FREE copy of my 'all about me in science' bunting activity.

This is a great way to 'break the ice' with a new class in a non-threatening way!

3. Use decorations that will be used every year

For example, if you decorate your classroom with lab safety posters like these cute ones, then these will be used all year every year and are a great investment for only a few dollars. While I don’t usually like to laminate products because they will outlive both me and the students, Idid make an exception for my lab safety posters as I use them all year every year.

In the same way, investing in some great glass markers means you can draw on the windows and make new displays as much as you want to!

Wood wallpaper or any wallpaper to fit your classroom theme is also a good investment as it can change the whole vibe of a instantly for minimal investment.

4. Utilize the resources your school has

Many school teachers have access to school supplies that can be used in creative ways as science lab decorations. Here are some of my favourite uses for common school supplies:

  • Coloured paper and string can be used to make cute bunting
  • A3 paper can be used to print large posters and images
  • Butchers paper can be used for students to create posters for the walls
  • Science equipment and specimens can be brought together for an awesome display
  • Display student models or projects from previous years

5. Bring items from home

If you take a look around your home you might have some things that you want to get rid of that would actually make a nice addition to your classroom!

Think potted plants, cushions, fairy lights or photo frames you could put science pictures in.

Some things to think about when bringing in items from home:

i) be prepared that they might get stolen, lost, or ruined

ii) if they require electricity ensure they meet safety standards

iii) if used in the lab make sure displays are far enough away from lab benches where chemicals or fire will be used.

6. Ask about teacher discounts

Local craft stores sometimes have a discount for teachers. It is always worth asking before purchasing. Some of my favourite places to grab a discount are:

  • Eckersley’s Art and Craft
  • Educator marketplace

7. Visit the local dollar store

Don’t underestimate the difference some coloured streamers and backdrops can do for your lab. The party aisle has heaps of goodies for decorating a classroom! My favourite hack is using disposable coloured table cloths for bulletin boards. They are cheap, large and you can get them in almost any colour.

Science lab decoration ideas do not have to be expensive. Students will appreciate the effort and will enjoy being involved.

What is your favourite science lab decoration hack? Please comment below!

I’d also love to hear if you try any of these in your classroom!

Pretty and Relevant Science Classroom Decoration Ideas to Make Your Class Pop

  • July 27, 2022

If you look on Pinterest you are sure to see a lack of science classroom decoration ideas. I want to share with you my classroom décor in hope of inspiring you.

Looking for more ways to engage your science students? Then check out The Ultimate Guide to Engaging Students Guides by completing the form below.

How to Decorate Science Classroom

One of the challenges with decorating a science classroom is that there are typically a lot of hard, sterile surfaces. Our rooms tend to feel cold and uninviting, so it is natural that we want to warm them up with décor. There are some simple ways to help make your classroom not feel as much like a clinic and more like an inviting classroom.

The first suggestion I have is to dim the lights and use lamps or another ambient lighting. Now, of course, if you are doing a lab or a dissection, you will want to turn the lights up bright. However, for the day-to-day, this creates a calming effect and makes the room feel much cozier.

chemistry assignment decoration

The next suggestion is to diffuse lightly scented essential oils. I love using Lavender mixed with a bit of eucalyptus to create that spa-like smell without it being overpowering.

Thirdly, put up motivational posters, a word wall, and interesting science posters around the classroom. These could be placed directly on your walls, or on a bulletin board in your classroom. There are some ideas I will share below of what I use in my classroom to fill the white space without making it feel cluttered.

Lastly, it is easy for our classrooms to get cluttered with items. I strongly recommend having a specific space for everything. I have a portion of the class that is dedicated to student supplies. This way they know where everything is and can have easy access to it. This also prevents students from asking to borrow a million things off my desk.

Science Class Ideas

Ok, now for the really fun stuff…decorations! It is very difficult to find ideas on Pinterest,  or anywhere else online, that give great high school science display ideas. Most sites you will find focus on elementary school and if you find one for high school, most likely it’s not science-related. I wanted to share some ideas about how I decorate my room using popular themes and color palettes.

The color palette that I am loving lately is the neutral/boho colors. These a very soothing and easy on the eye. They go with nearly any other color you already have in your classroom and blend in well. I am also a sucker for pinks. In my classroom décor, you’ll find a mixture of both, but are all geared towards science and student motivation.

chemistry assignment decoration

I also suggest having a student information station placed somewhere on your bulletin board or near the door so that students can easily refer to it. There are several things I keep on display during the entire semester such as where to find absent work, the remind text message number, as well as school-related information.

Science Classroom Display Ideas

So now for the specifics of what I have hanging in my classroom. I have a mixture of items I have created along with some items I was gifted and/or purchased.

ONE | Science Word Wall

This science word wall was created specifically for my students and I discovered that other teachers needed something like this as well. The word wall has the 20 most commonly used prefixes and suffixes in science. I have found this extremely useful to have displayed because I often refer to it when explaining topics to my students. They can easily look at the word wall and see what the meaning of a word is. This has definitely helped them get a better feel for the “science” language.

TWO | Famous Scientists Poster Set

It is always fun for students to see who is a famous scientist for things. I gathered inspiration from a lot of different places and came up with 10 awesome scientists. These posters provide a picture, and a description of their scientific contribution, along with a QR code so they can learn more about that individual. I have these on rotation as a Scientist of the Month so that it is changing constantly. It includes a variety of people from all ethnicities as well as gender and age groups. These are one of my favorite displays.

THREE | Flora Maria Shop Motivational Posters

These motivational posters from Flora Maria Shop were gifted to me by the company. I have them hanging in my room and love the fact that they come in 2 versions: black & white and color. I have mine hanging on the black and white version simply because the colors side clashed with my aesthetics. The posters are super relevant and definitely have inspirational quotes.

FOUR | Boho Growth Mindset Poster

I first purchased this set nearly 3 years ago and still to this day have it hanging in my classroom. I absolutely love how it looks and I have these placed around the top of my classroom in a line that goes over my projector so that it is easily seen.

FIVE | Affirmation Station

I saw so many of these on my Instagram feed last year and loved the idea so much that I created my own. These surround my mirror and I love how when students look in the mirror they are surrounded by “I AM” affirmation statements to serve as encouragement. This was the perfect addition to my science classroom decoration ideas.

My overall goal for my classroom was to be a warm inviting place that still served the purpose of learning and motivating. I’d love to hear about your ideas and even feature one on my IG. HOW TO DECORATE A CLASSROOM DOOR

Decorating a classroom door doesn’t have to be complicated, although a lot of schools offer prizes for the best classroom door ideas.

The best way to come up with an original idea (as much as that is possible) is to search either for existing science lab decoration ideas or classroom door ideas and modify that.

You can also do a search for science quotes or t-shirts and use that as inspiration for your design.

Most classroom doors are made using various art supplies (common supplies linked below)- mainly paper and staples/tape to hold things up.

If you use pre-made letters, you’ll save yourself the horrible headache of having to print/cut-out letters. Don’t waste hours on this- just use pre-made letters. You can always reuse the letters for multiple ideas.

If you can’t use staples, sticky tack or duct tape tends to have the strongest bonding power.

I like to sketch out the idea of what the classroom door will look like on a piece of paper before getting started with the real thing. It helps with visualization.

And of course, a measuring tape can’t hurt either, so you don’t end up with wonky spacing.

You can make your own holiday ornaments using hcemistry. These ornaments include crystal snowflakes, silver glass balls, copper plated decorations, atom ornaments, and more.

Silver Ornaments

Use a chemical reaction to put a silver mirror coating inside a glass ornament. This is the method used to chemically silver mirrors. It results in a beautiful keepsake silver ornament.

Borax Crystal Snowflake

You can grow the crystals for this sparkling ornament in a few hours or overnight. Make lovely snowflakes that won't melt!

Paper Atom Decorations

These paper atoms are like paper snowflakes, except atomic-looking! Make and hang them anywhere, anytime. They look great for the winter holidays.

Crystal Holiday Stocking

This is another holiday crystal growing project that only takes a few hours to complete. Coat a Christmas stocking or other porous decoration with tiny glistening crystals made from a common household ingredient.

Copper Plated Holiday Ornament

Use a redox reaction to plate copper over galvanized wire or a galvanized shape (e.g., a star) to make a shiny copper holiday ornament.

Glow in the Dark Crystal Ornament

This crystal decoration is shown in a snowflake shape, but you can make it in any design you like. Grow crystals around a shape, but include an extra ingredient so your crystals will glow in the dark.

Borax Crystal Heart

You can grow borax crystals over a heart shape just as easily as over a snowflake shape! Make a sparkling crystal heart for your holiday.

Crystal Paper Snowflakes

Cut paper snowflakes from coffee filters to use as a base for crystals. This is a crystallized twist on the classic paper snowflake project that produces amazing shimmering decorations.

Crystal Star Decoration

This is another easy crystal decoration that you can grow overnight. If you grow the crystal around a glittery or metallic pipe cleaner, you'll get a twinkling star. You can get a different interesting crystallized effect if you grow clear crystals around a colored core.

Crystal Starfish

You can use a small dry starfish or a shell as the base for your crystals. Starfish produce very sparkly decorations or holiday ornaments. It's an easy project that you can complete overnight.

How to Use Chemistry for Christmas Decorations?

How to Use Chemistry for Christmas Decorations?

Christmas is a time of bright colorful gifts, fun and positive emotions. It is a time when you don’t want to think about studying and boring lessons. However, let’s recollect some chemistry bases this Christmas. Why? Artificial snow, crystal snowflakes, snow globe, non-fading Christmas tree, interesting handmade gifts and bright colorful decorations. All these you can make using chemistry, its secrets and magic. If you want to amaze your friend and relatives read the article and let’s do winter science.

What do you imagine when you think about Christmas? Snow and Christmas tree? Sure! Both of these are the symbols of winter holidays. And we can make these holidays last much longer. First, make your Christmas tree stay green for a long time providing it with necessary nutrients. You need:

  • 1 gallon of water
  • 2 cups of corn syrup or 4 teaspoons of sugar
  • 4 teaspoons of chlorine bleach
  • 4 teaspoons of lemon juice

These ingredients make water softer and acidic facilitating its absorbance by the tree. Besides, these compounds serve as disinfectants and impair the growth of bacteria, fungi and algae that may be toxic for the tree. Also, you can drop a penny there: copper can serve as a fungicide and acidifier. So, mix all ingredients and store your Christmas tree in this solution, regularly changing it.

Christmas tree nutrients

Now, it’s high time we made snow. Of course, you can buy or rent snow-making machine producing snow from the water. However, if you are not going to make up a ski slope, you can use simple chemical polymer sodium polyacrylate ([C 3 H 3 NaO 2 ] n ). This polymer possesses a great ability to absorb water. You can use several teaspoons of dry sodium polyacrylate and add water to reach desired wetness. You will get non-toxic snow-like gel. You can add salt to make it drier or freeze it to make it cold. Though, you will not produce enough artificial snow to make a snowman, but you can easily use these amounts to decorate your Christmas tree or room.

Next, let’s make a snowglobe as a handmade gift. Here, you can use eggshell and glitter to create snow-like structures. However, if you need more chemistry magic you can use benzoic acid (C 6 H 5 COOH). Though this compound is safe, you should use protective gloves due to possible irritating effect. So, heat 1g of benzoic acid in 75ml of water. In these conditions, benzoic acid dissolves. However, cooling to room temperature makes it precipitate and form snowflakes-like structures. Now, you need to take a glass jar, put any small plastic toy, add water with precipitating benzoic acid and close the jar with the lid using glue if necessary. Here you are!

Handmade snow globe

If you want to decorate your house with amazing snowflakes, make beautiful borax crystal. You will need:

  • white pipe cleaners
  • borax (sodium borate, Na 2 B 4 O 7 )
  • boiling water
  • food coloring

First, you have to make a snowflake shape using pipe cleaners. So, cut them into smaller parts and join them together to form a snowflake. Then, tie the string to the end of the snowflake. Another end of the string should be tied to the pencil and put over a jar to place the snowflake inside. Add boiling water and borax into the jar with regular mixing. You should add three 3 tablespoons of borax per cup of water. The snowflake shape must be covered with borax solution. Then, leave snowflake in the jar overnight. In the morning, you’ll find your amazing snowflake: borax will form crystals on the surface of the pipe cleaners. You can use food coloring to make your snowflake more bright. Furthermore, you can make your snowflakes glow in the dark. How? You can add fluorescent dyes to your solution. Find out how to do it in our previous article .

YouTube video

And finally, let’s use pine cones to produce a magic light. You will need boric acid (H 3 BO 3 ), ethanol and pine cones. Dissolve boric acid in water or ethanol, soak your pine cones in this solution and let it dry. After this, light up your pine cones. You will see magical green and red fire produced by burning boric acid.

Using these simple household chemicals, materials and your free time you can make wonderful decorations and fill your holidays with pleasure of experimenting. However, remember the rules of safety for yourself and people surrounding you. Though chemicals described here (sodium polyacrylate, benzoic acid, borax, boric acid and other) are non-toxic and are used in food technologies, don’t drink or eat them. Really, don’t. Wash your hands thoroughly after these or other experiments. And don’t play with fire too much. You don’t want to be on YouTube in a Christmas Failures video, do you? So, remember about safety rules, find time for creative ideas, use your chemistry knowledge, and you will spend amazing Christmas holidays.

In situ laser-assisted decoration of au nanoparticles on 3d porous graphene for enhanced 2-cees sensing.

The fabrication of gas sensing devices with high sensitivity and low limit of detection (LOD) for monitoring chemical warfare agents and their simulants is of great importance. Metal oxide-based semiconducting nanomaterials and their heterojunctions hold great promise in chemiresistive gas sensing. However, the demands of high working temperature, integration on interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) and additional heaters impede their popularity. This work demonstrates in situ laser-assisted preparation of Au decorated laser-induced graphene (LIG/Au) hetero-material as a flexible and effective near-room-temperature 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (2-CEES) sensor. The structure of sensor is simplified obviously via omitting the IDE and additional heating module. Via optimizing the concentration of precursor solution HAuCl4 and power of secondary scribing, the LIG/Au-0.1 M gas sensor exhibits an enhanced response of 7.85‰ to 1.0 ppm 2-CEES, which is twice as that of pure LIG. Furthermore, its LOD is as low as 5.8 ppb. The sensing mechanism analysis reveals that the decoration of Au nanoparticles enriches the active sites of LIG/Au-0.1 M and provides the catalytic and sensitization effects. The present study not only provides an appealing 2-CEES gas sensor but demonstrates an effective method to large-scale fabricating high-performance other sensing devices.
