Today you came over to dinner for the first time You not only came you forgot your caste and came Usually women don’t forget that tradition of inequality But you came with a mind large as the sky to my pocket size house

I thought you had ripped all those caste things You came bridging that chasm that divides us Truly friend I was really happy With the naïve devotion of Shabari I arranged the food on your plate

But the moment you looked at the plate your face changed With a smirk you said Oh My – Do you serve chutny koshambir this way? You still don’t know how to serve food Truly you folk will never improve.

I was ashamed really ashamed My hand which had just touched the sky was knocked down I was silent Toward the end of the meal you asked What’s this? Don’t you serve buttermilk or yoghurt with the last course of rice?

Oh My Dear we can’t do without that… The last bit of my courage fell away like a falling star I was sad then numb But the next moment I came back to life A stone dropped in the water stirs up things on the bottom So my memories swam up in my mind

Dear Friend – You ask about buttermilk and yoghurt What/How shall I tell you? You know in my childhood we didn’t even have milk for tea much less yoghurt or buttermilk My mother cooked on sawdust she brought from the lumberyard wiping away the smoke from her eyes Every once in a while we might get garlic chutny on coarse bread Otherwise we just ate bread crumbled in water

Dear Friend – Shrikhand was not even a word in our vocabulary My nose had never smelled the fragrance of ghee My tongue had never tasted halva basundi

Dear Friend – You have not discarded your tradition Its roots go deep in your mind And that’s true true true Friend – There’s yoghurt on the last course of rice Today the arrangement of food on your plate was not properly ordered Are you going to tell me what mistakes I made? Are you going to tell me my mistakes?

’Bosom Friend’ forms a part of a collection of poems called Phiyad (1984). As the title suggests, this poem is about a very good friend, a woman friend, who accepts the poet’s invitation for dinner and visits her for the first time.

The first paragraph expresses the poet’s surprise as well as her admiration and gratitude for this friend who seems to have broken through the caste and traditional barriers to reach out to her untouchable friend. This friend, who obviously is from a higher caste, surprises the poet because women, who are actually the worst victims of oppressive traditions, are often the most orthodox defenders of the same traditions. The poet is overwhelmed by this magnanimous gesture and the courage shown by her friend. Her own small existence is marked by her pocket-sized house.

But the optimism, the expectations raised by this apparent magnanimity of the friend is belied in the second paragraph. The poet is grateful that her friend has reached out to her, bridging the chasm of social norms that has kept them apart till now. The emotional and psychological divide, products of the caste and social divide, are bridged, at least for a moment, between the two friends. The poet’s gratitude for this gesture from her friend is beautifully captured in the image of Shabari, the tribal woman who, in her devotion to Lord Rama, tasted each of the berries she offered him; to ensure that they were indeed sweet. The poet’s love, devotion and gratitude is, perhaps, naive like that of Shabari. But her expectations are shattered the moment she offers food to her friend. The friend smirks at the way the food is arranged and promptly reproaches the poet for her inability to serve food the way upper caste people do.

This heartless reproach reopens the chasm that was bridged for some time with the friend’s visit. This us and them divide, it seems, has much deeper roots. Identities which are built up on the notions of pure/impure need much more than a visit to be merged into one human identity. The poet now turns inwards with this reproach. The poet’s out-stretched hands, which had touched the sky of freedom, freedom from her caste bondage, find rejection. She feels ashamed. A further reproach from the friend for not serving buttermilk makes her sad and speechless. The sky, a symbol of hope and freedom, which was within reach a moment ago recedes back. The hurt, almost a betrayal, stirs up memories of loss and deprivation.

The poet wakes up to the reality of her existence which she had forgotten for a moment in a state of heightened expectation, triggered by the visit of this friend. Though she now leads a middle- class existence, her past is marked by deprivation and struggle.

An existence marked by much deprivation leaves its mark on the mind and shapes habits of thought which are difficult to shake off. This is something that the friend cannot understand because she is far removed from this experience due to her privileged position in society. There is a slight reproach along with a sense of hurt in the poet’s tone in the third paragraph.

The last few lines, in an ironic shift talk about habits of mind. But this line is about the friend who, while pretending to treat the poet as an equal, still, treats her as an unequal. The friend’s reproach that ‘Truly, you folk will never change’ turns back on her in an ironic reversal. Though she had accepted the poet’s invitation and visited her house, in apparent disregard for caste or tradition, she still carries the baggage of her tradition in her mind.

Though this friend has crossed the physical threshold of caste she still carries it in her mind. She has recreated the emotional and psychological divide once again within the poet’s house. The ‘you’ in her phrase ‘you folk will never improve’ once again imprisons the poet within a predefined psycho-social space and simultaneously redefines her self in opposition to the poet’s identity. She denies the poet’s essential humanity by formulating her in a fixed communal identity. And all this because, ‘Today the arrangement of food on your plate was not properly ordered’.

The poem ends with a couple of theoretical questions;

Are you going to tell me what Mistakes I made? Are you going to tell me my Mistake ?

These questions carry within them a reproach as well as a challenge. These questions also put this visit in its real perspective. Friends visit each other to share, to be together in an emotional and social bond and not to find faults. This friend makes the visit but retains her sense of superiority. The attitude displayed by this friend in symptomatic of a larger problem that simply cannot be resolved by empty gestures like this visit. The chasm of caste that divides people, that sets people up in a hierarchy can only change when we change habits of thought. This divide can only be bridged in a spirit of accommodation and understanding, by accepting alternate realities and alternate identities.

Friends as They Are: In Search for a Soul Mate Essay

People cannot be socially isolated for long. No matter how independent one might be, there will always be the necessity for communication. Hence, the need to search for friend arises. Although types of friends are extremely numerous and can be split into categories based on countless number of principles, the best way to categorize types of friends is to consider how close they are to each other.

The so-called bosom friends are the most well known type of friends; however, weirdly enough, very few people can actually name the ones that fall under the given category. A bosom friend is the kind of a person that knows every single detail of his pal’s life and always keeps in touch with the latter.

The necessity to maintain constant communication is, perhaps, the basic obstacle on people’s way to become bosom buddies. Indeed, what seemed possible in the childhood, when most of the problems were solved by adults, and children had as much time for communication as possible, becomes hardly attainable in adult life, when a person barely manages to split his/her time between his/her family and work.

The second type of friendship presupposes much more prosaic relationships. The friends talk to each other on a regular basis because they go to the same school or college or work in the same office. However, as soon as one of them resigns or moves to another city, the communication ends, since both are too lazy to call or send an e-mail to each other.

Finally, there is the third type of friends. These friends share their moral principles, poke fun at the same things and find it enticing to talk to each other. Such friends may be separated for quite long and resume their friendship afterwards disregarding the time that they spent apart from each other.

Speaking of which type of friends is the best, one must mention that the choice of a friend depends greatly on one’s personality and character traits. For some people, it is crucial to have a devoted friend by their side seven days a week, which means that they should go with the first category of friends.

For some people, it is crucial that they could have enough time to arrange their private life and career, which means that they clearly need the second type of a friend. Finally, some might enjoy being alone and, thus, need the third kind of a friend, that is, the one whom they will not depend much on.

Personally, I prefer the third type of friends, since I tend to be moody and often need time to be alone. While such type of relationships does not presuppose being close to each other, it not necessarily means that it cannot be defined as friendship. Quite on the contrary, this is the kind of friendship that grown up people need; with friends like the one described above, one will be able to build trustworthy and long lasting relationships with.

This is the kind of friendship that does not need proofs for its own existence; instead, such friends feel the bond between them nearly intuitively and, thus, become closely related to each other due to the trust that they have in each other. However, I must admit that the given type of relationships requires that the two friends should put considerable effort in their communication at the very start of their friendship. Therefore, I assume that the third kind of a friend is the hardest one to find and yet the best that a man can have.

real usefull stuff!!!!!

its not psychotic or dramatic

great stuff,,helped a lot

THE HIGHLY ACCLAIMED POEM .

Even trent protector wouldent hav described him so well... wat a noob stuff....

real useless explanation if a blog is opened the explanation should be perfect.....

i feel it wasn't quite complete as the last few lines weren't explained which would have provided the gist of the poem

bad explanation...it should b complete

It is one of the most extraordinary way of expressing ones experience and also to educate others about it as caste barriers still exist in this so called literate India.

there is only one guest...i.e. her close friend

It was of a little help as da explanation is quite incomplete n it dsnt explains da real deep feelings of poet.. Though a good attempt

Adding on, all the people during that little feast are educated, but the "so called high society people" showcase more illiteracy than the dalit women as education teaches us to treat everybody equally and that caste system are of no meaning and value. they blame the hostess of lacking table etiquette when they themselves do not follow etiquette that should be followed by a guest. no guest questions what they have been offered as they except invitation by their will. the end shows that there is limit to which people can take negativity cause after that its impossible not to errupt. we learn that in our society we only learn education but do not apply it.

bosom friend essay in english

Like it is said in the poem that the roots of the caste which is created by the society are deep inside the guest's mind.. And the same case happened in case of her, as usual she started talking about class issues.. Educariin, preferably moral education can change this discrimination

I have a doubt here. The last lines of the poem, Are you going to tell me what mistakes I made? Are you going to tell me my mistakes? What is poet trying to express through these two questions? And what really does these questions mean.

awesome....!! i ws seaching for one poem summary but got all the additional english stuff here...lol..:) :)

nice attempt...but cud hv been better

Bosom Friend. Title refers to the painful realization of the deep chasm between the friends. 1st stanza. To day you came to my home for having dinner with me, i am so excited, this is the first time you visit me. You are an upper cast WOMAN, woman cannot forget the tradition of inequality. Woman are more careful to keep such tradition like cast system. But you teared out all your cast feelings from your mind and you came to my home( the hut of lower a cast). I understand your mind is large as the sky is.unless you cannot come to my pocket size house. you lives in the paalce. You eats in the golden plate, you born into the silver spoon. I am excited, how could you forget the feelings of cast system ? Effective use of irony can be seen in the first stanza. tell me, is this analyse ok ??? Can I proceed ?? “Bosom friends” originated in the 1500s as a term for referring to your best friend. It was meant to represent a deep, intimate, friendly relationship . The word “bosom” today would be considered to be a literal woman’s chest. However, centuries ago, it was actually meant as a metaphorical chest of deep emotions . This later developed into “ bosom buddies ” in the later 20th century.

This term was used for the NBC sitcom “ Bosom Buddies ,” which aired in the 1980s. Fittingly enough, the show did center around a pair of best friends. It was also used in Rosie O’Donnel and Deborah Axelrod’s book “Bosom Buddies: Laughter Lessons for Breast Health and Cancer.”

Frequency of bosom friend, n. , 1750–2010

* Occurrences per million words in written English

Historical frequency series are derived from Google Books Ngrams (version 2), a data set based on the Google Books corpus of several million books printed in English between 1500 and 2010.

The overall frequency for a given word is calculated by summing frequencies for the main form of the word, any plural or inflected forms, and any major spelling variations.

For sets of homographs (distinct entries that share the same word-form, e.g. mole , n.¹, mole , n.², mole , n.³, etc.), we have estimated the frequency of each homograph entry as a fraction of the total Ngrams frequency for the word-form. This may result in inaccuracies.

Smoothing has been applied to series for lower-frequency words, using a moving-average algorithm. This reduces short-term fluctuations, which may be produced by variability in the content of the Google Books corpus.

Our Friendship

Our friendship started when my best friend came in as a new admission to our class. Both of us were hesitant to talk to each other at first, but gradually we developed a bond. I remember the first time my best friend tried to talk to me; I rolled my eyes because I thought there was no use and we wouldn’t hit it off. However, to my surprise, we became best friends by the end of the session year.

We learned so many things about each other and found out that our taste in music and fashion was so similar. Since then, there was no stopping us. We spent all our time together and our friendship became the talk of the class. We used to help each other out in studies and visited each other’s homes as well. We made sure to have lunch together on Sundays. We also used to watch movies and cartoons together.

On our summer break, we even went to summer camp together and made a lot of memories. Once during the summer holidays, she also accompanied me to my maternal grandparents’ home. We had a fabulous time there. Moreover, we even invented our own handshake which only both of us knew. Through this bond, I learned that family doesn’t end with blood because my best friend was no less than my family. Friendship is one relationship that you choose, unlike all other relationships.

I have had a lot of friends since childhood, but Raghav is one of the kindest and most trustworthy friends for me. I must say that Rohan has been my best friend since childhood. He is a very good person and a true friend because he has a good manner that he never lies to anyone, and hates people who lie to him. He is a kind boy and also a sincere student. My parents also met my friend in the school at the parents-teachers meeting, and they also like Raghav and his sincerity. We both have been in the same class from the 3rd standard until now. We are in the 10th standard now, and we both help each other in the preparation for Board exams, which will be held in the month of March.

He always invites me to his house to play video games with him. Every Sunday, we both enjoy playing video games with popcorn and juice together. It is like a big achievement for people to get a trustworthy and lifelong best friend. I also had a best friend in my life too since childhood. His name is Ganaraj, and his mother is Telugu. He is a very talented person and always supports me in my studies. We both like mathematics, and also we love to solve maths numerical problems. Our favorite sport is Cricket, and we both are good all-rounders on our school cricket team. Whenever I need his help and support, my best friend is there for me to hold me. We both live in the precious moment and create memories that will stay with me forever. My Best Friend Essay 500 Words

My best friend’s name is Siddhart Jadhav. We have been friends since class 7th A in Alfred Nobel High School. We both studied in the same school in childhood but not in the same class as our sections are different. Later that time, all the students from all the sections are sorted according to the previous academics’ percentages and grades and separated into four different sections. Due to this separation, I met Siddhart in the 7th A, and we became friends at that time. Later, time goes by, and our friendship bond becomes stronger, and we become best friends with each other and spend most of our time together in school, tuition, and extra classes. We also sit on the same bench in the classroom.

Our likes and dislikes are also common, and we also love to dance and sing. In every annual gathering and other function that is held in our school, we both participate and give our best performances. We never wanted to win the competitions, our intention was to enjoy the gathering. Some of our school teachers don’t like our togetherness and friendship, but some of them loved and always blessed our strong bonded friendship to stay longer and longer. Siddharth and I always talked in the running classroom, and most of the time, our teacher also punished both of us by standing outside the classroom. We always tried to irritate the lecturer in the chemistry lectures by asking tons of doubts and questions. We eat tiffin boxes sitting on the last benches.

Apart from this naughtiness, Siddharth is very punctual, and he is never late for coming to school and attending classes. He always completes his homework at a given time and being with him, I also start studying very well and completing my homework on time. He keeps his books and copies very clean. His writing is very nice and encourages me to write cleanly and clearly for better understanding. My parents also compliment my friend that being with him, I also become responsible and a good student.

Siddharth and I are both excellent football players and athletes. When we both start playing the football game, the opponent team never wins. Our sports teacher always motivates us and tells us that we will become good football players one day. My parents also know Siddharth very much, and they like his pleasant behavior. Feel free when Siddharth and I stay together, whether for playing games, video games, study, or for going out to have fun with other classmates. Siddharth is my best friend, my first friend. He is the one who offers me help in my studies when I need it, supports me and always shows love to me, defends me, and stands by my side in any situation no matter what.

In academics, my best friend, Siddharth, is chosen to be awarded the best student of the year in the 10th class. He is one of the brilliant students of our school and also won many of the competitions that were held in school. He is like a well-wisher, and I always enjoyed his company. He, too, feels secure and relieved by spending time with me as well. He is like a problem-solving friend to me. I never wanted to lose him in my life.
