How Much is the Search Traffic for the Top 8 Comic News Sites Worth?
$670,000. That’s the estimated value of all the desktop and mobile traffic that visited Comicbook.com in September. Simply put – you’d have to spend just shy of 700 grand (over a 30-day period) to generate the online exposure that ComicBook.com receives organically. Sweet Christmas!
Over the past two decades, comic news sites have transformed from hobby sites to full blown media properties that are now part of lucrative digital portfolios.
Some of the top sites are newer properties owned by media networks while others have been slogging it out since the early 2000’s harkening back to an era before comic book movies swallowed the universe.
Three events in 2016 caused me to want to look under the hood of 8 of the largest sites.
First: the sale of the web’s largest (and one of the oldest) comic news sites, Comic Book Resources (now CBR.com) to ValNet Inc – an online media publisher.
Second: June 2016 was the biggest sales month for comics in 20 years.
And third: Most of this year’s major comic book films have opened – except Marvel’s Doctor Strange – and we’re apparently hurtling towards “ peak superhero ” at the movie theaters.

So what did I find? Several things…
The comic news sites at the top of the food chain are doing big numbers both regarding traffic and $$$.
- There is 10x more monetary value in ranking for comic movie terms than there are for the books in which they are based. Makes sense as the box office receipts for an individual film (like say Captain America: Civil War) is larger than the annual revenue of the entire comic book industry – for North America at least.
- A lot of the sites have hundreds of thousands of pages indexed due to the massive amounts user generated content in the forums. Forums have been a mainstay of comic book fandom since the advent of the internet.
- A few of the sites are bringing in equal or greater amounts of search traffic on mobile via just 8-10% of the keyword searches through desktop.
But first a quick explanation of some of the metrics used for this analysis…
Domain Authority is a score (on a 100-point scale) developed by Moz that predicts how well a website will rank on search engines. [ source ] The next six metrics were all gathered from using SEMrush – a digital tool that is specific to finding profitable keywords via analytics. SEMrush Rank : a complete listing of the top 100,000 domains in SEMrush’s database, ranked in order of their keywords and estimated traffic coming. Keywords : The number of keywords bringing users to the website via Google’s top 100 organic search results. Traffic : The number of users expected to visit the website in the following month on condition that average monthly organic traffic stays relatively the same. Traffic Cost : Estimated price of organic keywords in Google AdWords. Total Backlinks : The number of links pointing to the queried website. Referring Domains : The number of domains pointing to the queried URL. First Page Rankings : A random sampling of keywords that the specified site ranks for organically on the first page of Google. On average, 71.33% of searches result in a page one organic click.
All research was done on Tuesday, September 27th. So keep in mind that the data (traffic / rankings) fluctuates minute to minute online. View this as a snapshot.

Comic Book Resources was founded by Jonah Weiland in 1995. On April 4, 2016, Weiland announced that the site had been sold to ValNet Inc., a company that is known for its acquisition of other media properties such as Screenrant. The site was relaunched as CBR.com on August 23, 2016.

As we can see – CBR.com is quickly recovering from its migration over from the old domain name. Moving an almost 2 million page website over to a new domain is a massive undertaking.

Newsarama has been a mainstay on the internet for 21 years now. It began life in the summer of 1995 as a series of forum postings on the Prodigy comic boards. After several iterations – including life as a comic news column on several prominent sites in the early 2000’s – Newsarama.com ended up on Kevin Smith’s ViewAskew.com network of sites.
The site has changed owners several times over the past decade. Imaginova acquired it in 2007. TopTenREVIEWS snapped it up in October 2009. It now resides in the portfolio of Purch Group, Inc. formerly known as TechMediaNetworks.

The 10 Best Ways to Read Comics Online for Free
Comic books aren't cheap! You can save a lot of money by using these sites to read comics online for free.
Where can you go to read comic books online for free, and legally? There are numerous options available to you.
Marvel and DC have gained a lot of new fans with their increased cinematic presence, meaning a boost to the comic book industry. Unfortunately, visiting your local comic book store can prove expensive. Single issues typically cost $3.99. Milestone issues and variants cost even more. And some people don't even live near a comic shop.
Thankfully, you can save some money by using these sites to read comics online for free and completely legally. No matter what kind of comics you're into, you should find them on the best sites for free comics.
1. Marvel Unlimited
Where do you go to read Marvel Comics online for free? Marvel Unlimited is the obvious answer, but most know it solely as a paid-for service. With a monthly or annual subscription, you get access to over 30,000 comics. Its corresponding mobile app is one of the best Marvel apps for comic book fans .
However, Unlimited offers a series of tasters, also giving you the chance to try out its smart panel interface. There's a good mix of big-name characters and lesser-known heroes, so you can explore plenty that the Marvel Universe has to offer.
Of course, you'll see a lot of debut series, but keep checking because it further features entire miniseries for you to enjoy, including comics related to current and previous shows and films, like Marvel's Hero Project on Disney+ and digital-exclusive "Infinity Comics" related to the Loki TV series. If you enjoy the app, you can join Marvel Unlimited with monthly or annual subscriptions. This includes downloads for offline reading, creator and character spotlights, and plenty more fantastic Marvel Unlimited features .
2. DC Universe Infinite
Where can you go to read DC Comics online? DC Kids used to be a good option, and while it still features animations (for which the company is greatly celebrated, giving youngsters a good entry-point into comics), its comic selection has dwindled to nothing. Instead, then, there's DC Universe Infinity, the major publisher's alternative to Marvel Unlimited.
But this is region-locked, so isn't available to everyone. At the time of writing, readers in the UK, for instance, are exempt, as the main app that supports the free issues isn't ready yet.
If you're in America, Canada, or other select locations, however, you can enjoy a small but fair sample of freebies, notably issues released as part of Free Comic Book Day, an annual event in May that purports to help draw fans into independent comic book stores.
You'll find the big names here, i.e. Superman, Batman, and the Suicide Squad, so it's a decent way of introducing yourself or others to the worlds of DC.
If you want to read comics online, Libby is an ideal choice. It's brought to you by your local library service, you get a whole host of free stuff to borrow for 21 days. Plus, if you're not sure you'd like a particular title, you can read a sample before borrowing properly.
There are sections for kids and teenagers, or you can just browse a wide archive of graphic novels, magazines, and even audiobooks.
You need a library card, but because this app is sponsored by local libraries all across the world, you can actually request a card from your nearest library. You can borrow up to 10 titles at one time and download them for free too, so if you're going on vacation and can't guarantee internet access, this is a top choice.
4. Dark Horse's Free Books
Dark Horse is a great heavy-hitter with the license for numerous much-loved franchises. The company's Free Books page is a reflection of that, which also acts as a great way of getting newcomers into comics.
Let's say you have a friend who loves Stranger Things. Get them hooked by introducing them to the free comics! Maybe you love playing Overwatch. Why not take some time away from the PlayStation by sampling Dark Horse's miniseries expanding on that world?
Other popular brands you'll find here include Minecraft, The Umbrella Academy, Hellboy, Avatar, and Mass Effect.
5. DriveThru Comics
You won't find the big two here: Marvel and DC are absent from the list of publishers on DriveThru. However, there's a large collection of books with a variety of comics that span genres and styles. And you will find Marvel and DC's bigger competitors, like Valiant Comics, Top Cow, and Aspen Comics.
Most first issues are free, and if you like the series, you can buy subsequent issues from the store. Many of those that aren't free are available on a pay-what-you-want basis.

Start on the Comics and Graphic Novels Best Sellers list, then click Top 100 Free to see the most popular free titles available for download. That's DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Image, and lots more.
You can also filter the list by genre on the left of the screen, helping you find the comics you're interested in. The list is updated hourly, so check back regularly for new titles. In a way, it's essentially an aggregate of free content, so if you're not sure where to start off, this is the best place to explore.
7. Digital Comic Museum
If you'd like to see the genesis of the comic book medium, check out the Digital Comic Museum. You can spend days reading free comic books from the Golden Age (i.e. 1930s to 1950s).

Comics are enjoying a resurgence, and you can take full advantage of this if you know the best comic book websites to visit . And GoComics is your top resource for syndicated strips.
There are two subscription options: free and paid. Fortunately, the former is all you really need (although we encourage readers to support the service). GoComics offers a massive catalog including lesser-known cartoons and popular names like Peanuts, Dilbert, and Calvin and Hobbes.
Plus there are two categories for our favorite Monday-hating cat: Garfield and Garfield Classics!

The Best Free Comic Book Sites and Apps in 2024
Check out these places to read free comics online.
Comics have been bringing joy to people for over a century, but how we read them is always changing. Whether it was the change from buying comics at newsstands to having a pull list at your local comic shop, reading single issues and transitioning into picking up trade collections or graphic novels instead, there's always been many ways to enjoy comics. Now thanks to the internet there are even more ways to find new favorites and many of those spaces also offer the ability to read comics for free! From library apps to comics companies there are a ton of places to get your comics fix without paying a penny and we've curated a list of the ten best ones here for 2024!.
Each of the sites and apps below offer some sort of version of free comics and graphic novels you can read online.
The easiest to navigate — and most used — service on our list is Webtoon . The app and desktop version of the platform are great and feature an unmatched selection of free comics. While you won't find all of your standard comic shop heroes here, Webtoon offers stories in all genres, with over 1 million titles to explore. Fantastic horror comics that have inspired hit Netflix shows like Hellbound sit alongside delightful romance smashes like Lore Olympus, and DC Comics biggest hit in years Wayne Family Adventures originated here just like the now New York Times bestselling fantasy Lore Olympus. Webtoon has revolutionized the way people access and make comics and it is completely free. While users can pay to read extra chapters or new entries quicker than usual, you can use Webtoon and access its massive catalog without ever spending a cent. As well as the great selection you'll quickly lose yourself in the platform's infinite scroll format that allows you to easily read comics on your phone or iPad.
Our next recommendation is the brilliant library app Hoopla . The only caveat is that you will have to get or have a library card — which you can get at your local library or online — but it's a worthwhile effort for the massive catalog of comics, audiobooks, and novels you can access. Along with iconic series like Invincible and collected editions of Y the Last Man , Hoopla also offers up weekly new comics from publishers like Archie Comics and IDW. Their vast library includes thousands of books that are super easy to read on your phone or tablet. Hoopla also has an impressive movie catalog of on demand films and if you get a library card for Hoopla you can access other video rental services like Kanopy. When it comes to scope and selection there's no better free way to keep up with your favorite comics than Hoopla.
The Viz website is a treasure trove of free comics offering the opening chapters of an eclectic array of beloved Shonen Jump and Viz titles to read. The site currently offers access to a ton of their biggest manga including My Hero Academia , Demon Slayer , One Punch Man, The Legend of Zelda, Assination Classroom, Choujin X and many more. They also have a great selection of seinen and shoujo series available too like Maison Ikkuko, Skip・Beat!, and Fushigi Yügi. This is a really easy way to try out new series or revisit old favorites before deciding whether or not you want to commit. And the interface is really easy to navigate on the desktop. If you prefer to read your comics on an app Viz also has an app that allows you to read free chapters that includes over 10,000 comics but access to that full catalog will run you $1.99 a month. But you can currently get a free seven day trial before subscribing letting you read all those sweet hits.
Shonen Jump
Weekly Shonen Jump was a trailblazer in the manga app game with their app launching with an impressive $1.99 price tag. Now it costs $2.99 a month, but the reason we're bringing it up here is because if you download the app you can access multiple chapters for free without a paid subscription. The great thing about this app — and the Viz one — is that it updates weekly with new chapters. Titles like Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Dragon Ball Super, and One Piece are all available on the same day that they release in Japan, and if you want to know some of the free comics you can access they include smash hits like Chainsaw Man, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Kaiju No 8 and all have multiple chapters available to free members.
See more of the best free manga websites .
Though you might not realize it, the Marvel website doesn't just have in-depth editorials and explainers about your favorite heroes, it also features a selection of free comics you can read. While the titles are far harder to find than on the Viz site, if you're a keen lover of Spider-Man, the X-Men , and other Marvel heroes it's worth the google search to find them (we of course have linked to the correct page above). Right now you can read almost fifty free Marvel comics that run from exciting number ones like Venom, Giant-Size X-Men and Thanos to Free Comic Book Issues and even entertainingly weird promotional books the company has made for licensors and corporations like Lexus and Ford. Though it's not an extensive collection there are some great titles here that can help you get to know some of your fave heroes a little better.
DC Universe Infinite
The DC Universe membership gives you access to thousands of comics for $7.99 a month. But what you might not know is that the desktop version of the site also allows you to read Free Comic Book Day issues from the publisher. The lineup of free comics changes but currently they have a selection of 13 books you can read including Batman comics , Suicide Squad: King Shark, and Wonder Woman: Rebirth. It's a small selection but definitely worth checking out if you love the infamous villains and beloved heroes on DC's roster. Plus if you want to read more they currently offer a seven day free trial that allows you access to the entire catalog!
Dark Horse Comics
Another unexpected place that you can find some great single issue digital comics is the Dark Horse website . Their free comics hub currently boasts over 100 comics , which is more than both of its big two competitors. That library includes titles like Hellboy, Mass Effect, Overwatch, Umbrella Academy, and Stranger Things. More akin to the Marvel library this includes Free Comic Book Day books alongside regular issues and tie-ins. The only catch is that you need to make a free account to access the books, it's definitely worth it though as you can actually download the issues to read offline as well as just reading them in the browser.
Barnes & Noble
One of the most well kept secrets when it comes to legal ways to read free comics is the Barnes & Noble website . If you download the Nook app to your favorite device you can download and access almost 1000 comics spanning the gamut from fantasy manga to DC superheroes. Whether you're looking for YA comics like Raven Loves Beast Boy and The Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero's Journey or full issues of series like Batman and Countdown to Infinite Crisis, Barnes & Noble has a surprisingly eclectic collection. And if you want manga then you'll be happy with the extensive supply of lesser known titles that you can access for free.
There are 100s of free comics to read on comixology though to find them you'll have to search "Free Comic Book Day" once you're on the site. The good news is that not only do they have an extensive collection of FCBD books including titles from Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and more but you'll also find other gems hidden in the results. Some of the current standouts include Marvel Voices #1, the first appearance of in Detective Comics #27, Fatale #1, and Chrononauts #1. Just make sure that you're "buying" the ones that don't say Kindle Unlimited underneath. Comixology also means that you download the comics and can read them offline. Though it is a little bit more work you can build an impressive library of digital comics through Comixology.
Our final entry takes us back into the web comics space. Tapas has a ton of original comics by a variety of independent creators, and while like Webtoon they put some chapters behind a paywall you can generally explore and read most of the titles and chapters for free. Some of the most popular series there right now include The Witch's Throne, Torte and Lacey, and The Beginning After the End. While you're not going to find characters you already know here you may well discover some new favorites and expand your comics reading horizons.
What's The Best Site for Free Manga?
Although there are quite a few places to read free manga online, the absolute best site is Viz.com . It's a great place to get access to free My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, One Punch Man comics. Our other recommendation would be Shonen Jump, which allows you to access free chapters when you buy the app.

Trina Robbins, a groundbreaking cartoonist who expanded the visibility of women in comics through her art, writing, scholarship and advocacy over a career that spanned more than six decades, died today at age 85 following a stroke that left her hospitalized earlier this year.
Robbins, who was inducted into the Will Eisner Comics Hall of Fame in 2013, was originally active in comics and science fiction fandom, then became one of the first women in the underground comix movement in the 1960s. Her unapologetically feminist take on politics and pop culture stood out among peers like Robert Crumb and S. Clay Wilson, and the experience left her a lifelong critic of the “boys club” misogyny she perceived in such work.

Prior to her work in comics, Robbins achieved early success as a boutique owner in New York’s East Village in the 1960s, helping to codify the counterculture aesthetic with designs for figures like Donovan, Mama Cass and David Crosby. In 1969, she designed the iconic costume for the horror-fantasy heroine Vampirella.
Relocating from New York to the Bay Area in 1970, she spearheaded the first all-women comic book, It Ain’t Me, Babe with collaborator Willy Mendes, and later produced the first explicitly lesbian-themed comic story, “Sandy Comes Out,” in Wimmen’s Comix #1 . She also became a fixture in the West Coast cultural scene of the time, and is name-checked in the Joni Mitchell song “Ladies of the Canyon.”

“Trina was a very supportive colleague and friend, ever since my work first appeared in Wimmen’s Comix in the mid-1970s,” said cartoonist Roberta Gregory. “I couldn’t help but be inspired by her artistry, drive and energy, and her tireless passion to bring visibility to deserving women, past and present. Although she leaves an enormous legacy of work, personally she will be missed by so many; no convention nor trip to her San Francisco hometown was complete without a visit and pep talk from Trina!”
Robbins continued to work as an artist and writer of comics, producing a stylish adaptation of Sax Rohmer’s Dope among other projects, and worked with publishers like DC, Marvel and Eclipse to create work that would appeal to girls and young women. In 1986, she became the first woman artist to draw Wonder Woman in her own comic book.
In 2017, Robbins collaborated with an assortment of contemporary cartoonists on A Minyen Yidn: A Bunch of Jewish Stuff , adapting some of the old folk tales told to her by her father, Max Perlman. She also found time to write books for children, translate romance manga, and contribute to various projects and fundraisers aligned with her interests, most recently Won ’ t Back Down , an anthology to benefit Planned Parenthood .
Along with her creative career, Robbins began to branch out as a scholar and historian of the medium, producing a series of books shedding light on the underreported history of women in comics. Her work includes Women and the Comics, A Century of Women Cartoonists, The Great Women Superheroes, From Girls to Grrrlz: A History of Women’s Comics from Teens to Zines, and more recent works focusing on the female cartoonists of the 1920s, 30s and 40s.
One of her most consequential legacies is her impact on the rising generation of scholars influenced by her feminist approach to comics studies. “Everyone knows Trina changed comics in big ways,” said Sydney Heifler, a comic book historian and doctoral candidate at Ohio State University who worked with and befriended Robbins in recent years. “She also made sure to put women cartoonists and comics artists and women’s comics in the history books, which I’m forever grateful for. As a historian, her herstory work has been invaluable to me. She was always an incredible friend and mentor to me in comics and I have many opportunities thanks to her. She changed my life. I know she’s done the same for others.”
The Legend of Wonder Woman #1 (196) in which Trina Robbins became the first female artist to draw ... [+] the character in her own title.
Throughout her career, she tried to get the American comics industry to recognize the value of female customers, especially in the comic store direct market. In 1993, she cofounded the group “Friends of Lulu” to help educate publishers and retailers on how to expand the comics audience. She was a regular guest on comics panels, documentaries and discussions, and was frequently a critic of the male centricity of the medium and its scholarship. She was particularly outspoken on Robert Crumb, whose work she considered deeply misogynistic and disturbing, but the vast majority of her scholarship focused on emphasizing the positive contributions of women to the art and business.
Part of this involved bringing forgotten work to light in her books, including Pretty In Ink: North American Women Cartoonists 1896 - 2013 and Flapper Queens: Women Cartoonists of the Jazz Age (both published by Fantagraphics Books) In later years, Robbins was involved in gallery exhibits and other showcases for the work of female cartoonists.
“Trina’s willingness to share her voluminous collection of comic art by women cartoonists of the past with museums and galleries worldwide has inspired generations of women and girls to make comics of their own, which I think is her continuing gift to us,” said Kim Munson, who co-curated several exhibits with Robbins and is editing an anthology called Conversations with Trina Robbins for University Press of Mississippi. “Trina, my friend and mentor, was fierce and opinionated, yet she was a sweetheart and showed a childlike glee in so many things, I’ve read about a hundred interviews with her over the past 6 months. I’ve been astounded by her honesty, resilience, talent, and creativity. She did not give up. Trina broke down a lot of doors for women, but most of her friends will just miss her kindness and her sense of humor.”
Her memoir, Last Girl Standing (2013), offered some anecdotes from her eventful and colorful life. She is survived by her longtime life partner, comic book artist Steve Leialoha, and daughter Casey.

Naming the best comic books of all time is no easy task, with each new decade delivering an instant-classic from Marvel, DC Comics, Image, Dark Horse, and many more. But a handful of famous comic books and graphic novels stand out above all the rest.
The medium has been growing exponentially since its early days in the 20th century. Gradually evolving mainstream culture and artistic approaches changed how comics and their characters are written, with each passing decade seeing more great comic stories published. DC and Marvel have unsurprisingly created some of the most famous comics ever, but the likes of Dark Horse and Image spawned some gems as well. And seeing our ranking of the most iconic, acclaimed, or important comic books of all time, one publisher dominates the list.
His work with Batman and Daredevil is typically first to come to mind as writer and artist Frank Miller's best comics , but he's also written some classic non-superhero stories. One of the genre's best black-and-white comics, Dark Horse's Sin City is an acclaimed neo-noir story set in a bleak, authoritarian-run town in the United States. The comic was revered for its approach and heavy inspiration from pulp and crime-noir TV, movie, and magazine stories.
Likewise, it presented an engrossing change of pace by Miller writing Sin City more like a serialized TV/movie crime-drama in a comic book format. Though the second movie adaptation was poorly received, the initial 2005 movie received generally positive reviews.
As one of the comic book industry's "big two" publishers, DC Comics is primarily known for its superheroes . However, their Vertigo imprint of comics spawned some timeless non-superhero classics. Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Preacher was one such cult-hit, with the story centered around a grim supernatural/religious disaster plaguing a small Texas town.
Jesse Custer, the titular preacher, becomes possessed by a supernatural entity comprised of pure goodness and pure evil, possibly becoming the most powerful entity in the universe. The story takes its small scope and eventually branches out across the country, meeting a bizarre cast of characters.
Batman: The Long Halloween
The Dark Knight has amassed an impressive catalog of some of the medium's best comics, and Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's The Long Halloween frequently ranks among the most accomplished and influential (let alone best) comics. It's one of the best Batman comics to influence The Dark Knight Trilogy , proving to be one of the best examples of the superhero's best traits.
The story arc is anchored by a detective-thriller premise, highlighting an element of Batman that often goes criminally forgotten in live-action. It does so while still embracing the noir hero's dark, mythical atmosphere and imposing physical prowess. The Long Halloween is an engrossing crime saga that reminds fans how masterfully grounded, street-level stories can be done.
Kingdom Come
Expanding to the greater Justice League, Kingdom Come is a landmark comic in DC's pantheon of stories. This alternate-canon comic was a sort of meta deconstruction of "superheroes" as a concept. Veteran writer Mark Waid and iconic artist Alex Ross put together a miniseries that detailed the fall in prominence of the outdated "traditional" heroes and the rise of dangerous copycats.
The traditional superheroes fall out of touch with the changing times and new threats, with Batman's team trying to stop Lex Luthor and the impending conflict. It's a fascinating alternate tale that stands as one of the famous Elseworlds imprint's best comics.
V For Vendetta
Alan Moore is also known for his work with a few of DC's superheroes, but V for Vendetta was another DC Vertigo comic that went in an excitingly different direction. It's a dark political-dystopia story, where a fictional political party has successfully converted the United Kingdom into a gruesome neo-fascist police state.
The main character is the titular V, sporting the classic Guy Fawkes mask, leading an anarchistic revolution against the ruling oppressors. Given the intense premise, V for Vendetta tackles a variety of heavy political themes in a dense, elaborate story full of moral grays and extremes.
Batman: The Killing Joke
As far as Batman goes, Moore and artist Brian Bolland created another one of the Caped Crusader's best and most influential comics. Though The Killing Joke was a 46-page one-shot rather than a fleshed-out series, the story told is impressively dense. Like with The Long Halloween , The Killing Joke was instrumental as reference material for The Dark Knight Trilogy , namely in inspiring Heath Ledger's immortalized take on the Joker.

It's one of the best comics the villain has featured in, and it highlights how the Clown Prince of Crime's excuse for embracing madness is nothing more than thinly veiling his cowardice that only Batman has called out. Whenever a major live-action adaptation aims to bring in the Joker, The Killing Joke is the best source material for understanding why he's such a compelling supervillain.
Batman: Year One
Origin stories can occasionally feel like a dime a dozen and have understandably worn out fans' patience over the years. However, Miller and David Mazzucchelli's Year One is among the most definitive comic book origins. The late Dennis O'Neil started Batman's exceptional noir reinvention, and Year One was one of the comics that brought this evolution to a crescendo.
Down to the pulp-inspired artwork, it's a rich and atmospheric crime drama that shows fans how Bruce Wayne came to be Gotham City's watchful protector. Likewise, it served as a great parallel origin story for soon-to-be Commissioner Gordon alongside Batman, depicting the two as flawed characters that are ultimately trying to do the best they can to bring justice to Gotham's systematic corruption.
The Sandman
The most iconic Vertigo series that DC published was its flagship The Sandman , written by the great Neil Gaiman and illustrated by numerous artists. The story revolves around Dream, one of the seven Endless, finding himself captured by cultists and forced to acknowledge that even entities that are even stronger than DC's gods such as them need to accept inevitable change.
The Sandman is celebrated as Gaiman's magnum opus and praised for its ethereal and surreal personifications of metaphysical concepts. The Endless are these personifications, as they embody some of the most powerful forces that make up the universe.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Arguably the most popular Elseworlds Batman story is Miller's The Dark Knight Returns . While an unquestionable classic to most, some of its themes have been unfortunately misconstrued and subsequently glorified in the modern day. Despite this, it remains a gripping action and politically dystopian-set Batman arc portraying a more cynical, jaded version of the hero after the fall of most of its heroes.

A 50-plus-year-old Bruce Wayne is compelled back into the cape and cowl after Gotham regresses into senseless crime and the U.S. government continually neglects the dying city. Meanwhile, the same governing body has effectively turned the once-great Superman into a political weapon and lapdog.
Perhaps Moore's most iconic work in comics came in his Watchmen series . Along with artists Dave Gibbons and John Higgins, the series functioned like a dark satirization of the superhero genre by portraying a group of morally-ambiguous "heroes" that are clearly -- and dangerously -- unstable in their respective ways.
The comic also incorporated (for its time) more contemporary elements like the Vietnam War and the Cold War. Doctor Manhattan, for instance, can be easily seen as the physical manifestation of paranoia over nuclear war breaking out. Along with the likes of The Sandman and The Dark Knight Returns , Watchmen was one of the first few comic books of the time to rank on The New York Times Best Seller list.
