From iPhones to Apple Watches, here's everything we're expecting to see at Apple's 'Far Out' September event

• Apple's next big launch event will take place on Wednesday, September 7.
• Although nothing is set in stone, Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Series 8.
• Here's a roundup of everything we think we'll see at Apple's September event.

Every year, Apple holds a big event near the start of Fall to announce that year's new iPhones, and a suite of other new products. This year, Apple is holding a Fall conference earlier than ever, and when it comes to product announcements, it looks like it could be jam packed.

Ahead of the Apple conference, branded "Far Out," we've put together a roundup of everything that Apple is expected to reveal this year. Here's what to keep on the lookout for this year.

Expect a new iPhone 14 series with bigger screens and faster chips

The star of this year's conference will almost assuredly be the iPhone 14. Like in previous years, Apple is expected to announce four different versions of the new iPhone: potentially, these would be the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. 

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus

The standard iPhone 14 likely isn't receiving very many updates this year. It'll probably still have a 6.1-inch screen size, and will probably still use the same (albeit still speedy) A15 Bionic chip that the iPhone 13 had. It'll likely only have two cameras on the back still, but analysts think that the front-facing selfie camera will see some upgrades.

Apple is expected to introduce a larger iPhone 14 that will be nearly the same in terms of specs, but has a bigger 6.7-inch screen. Unconfirmed reports say Apple plans to call it the iPhone 14 Plus . This would be the first time Apple offers a "budget" large-screen option.

iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models are where the real changes look like they'll start showing up. And the biggest of these potential changes is at the top of their 6.7-inch screens.

The notch — the large black indent at the top of the iPhone's screen that houses the selfie camera and speaker — is reportedly going away. Apple is expected to replace the notch with a "wide pill shaped cutout," meaning that the camera and speaker will just be on the screen without any black space surrounding them. 

Both the Pro and Pro Max are also expected to have newer internal chips. The A16 Bionic chips are more powerful than their A15 predecessors, making these the fastest iPhones yet.

The upgraded selfie camera that we mentioned earlier is likely coming to the Pro and Pro Max too, along with 48-megapixel back cameras that can record video in 8K quality. 

Lastly, Apple is expected to take a page out of Google's book and give the Pro and Pro Max "always-on" displays . This lets your iPhone continue to show some information — the time, for example — even when the iPhone is locked and the screen is off.

All these upgrades sound great, but the downside is that they're likely leading to price hikes for every version of the iPhone 14 . Highly trusted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that the iPhone 14 series will be about 15% more expensive than the iPhone 13 series, with the standard iPhone 14 starting at around $1000.

This is in addition to all the new features coming in iOS 16 — some of which we've already covered .

We could see three new Apple Watches, including one made for athletes

Alongside the iPhones, we're expecting to see some new Apple Watches.

The most likely of these is the Apple Watch Series 8 . The latest in Apple's long line of fitness bands, the Series 8 is expected to come with an upgraded S8 internal chip. This will let the Watch run faster, and make its biometric features — heart rate tracking, blood oxygen levels, etc. — more accurate. It might also come with a temperature sensor that can tell you if you have a fever .

A new version of the Apple Watch SE could replace the Series 3 as the Watch's budget option. It would likely sport the same S8 chip as the Series 8, but there's no word yet on whether it'll add the regular Watch's blood oxygen or ECG features.

The biggest question is whether we'll see the rumored debut of the Apple Watch Pro , a new model made for athletes. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman predicts that it'll come with a large "shatter-resistant" display and metal case, making it rough-and-tumble ready. But these extras might also raise the price to around $900.

A potential long-awaited update to the AirPods Pro

It's been nearly three years since Apple released the high-end AirPods Pro, and we haven't heard anything from them since about a new version.

But Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple will debut the AirPods Pro 2 this year . The September conference seems like a good time for it, though we could see it announced in October. While details are scarce, they'll surely come with better audio quality and a more stable Bluetooth connection — and probably a higher price.

What's coming later this year?

Although 2022 is more than half over already, Apple's September event likely won't be the last we hear from them this year.

In October, Apple is expected to release the new versions of iPadOS and macOS. They might also be accompanied by a new M2 iPad Pro , a new standard iPad model with an upgraded A14 chip , and three new Mac models: a Mac mini , a Mac Pro , and a MacBook Pro .

There are some other rumors too. Notably, Mark Gurman has spent the last few months reporting that Apple is making steady progress on its mixed reality headset . There's no guarantee that it'll debut this year (or ever), but it's in the works. For what it's worth, Ming-Chi Kuo says it'll release in January 2023 .

Everything announced at Apple’s September 2022 event: iPhone 14, Watch Ultra, AirPods Pro 2

Apple’s September 2022 “Far Out” event is over, and it was packed full of announcements. The 90-minute show saw updates to a wide range of Apple products, including iPhones and the Apple Watch, as well as a few software features that could make using your Apple products more seamless than ever. Here’s everything Apple announced during its September 2022 event.

Apple Watch Series 8

There were some announcements missing, though, so make sure to pull up our roundup of everything Apple didn’t announce , as well.

Starting off the show, we got a look at the Apple Watch Series 8 . It’s launching on September 16, and pre-orders are already live on Apple’s website. You’ll spend $399 for the base model with GPS, and you can spend up to $499 on the variant with a cellular connection. It’s a new Apple Watch, and it comes with a ton of new features.

Crash detection is the most impressive, utilizing a built-in gyroscope to detect a car crash and immediately call emergency services and pin down your location. The Apple Watch Series 8 also includes two built-in temperature sensors, which can help monitor your sleep and ovulation cycles with a sensitivity of 0.1 degrees Celsius for the most accurate temperature data.

These features come from a combination of the hardware inside the Apple Watch Series 8 and WatchOS 9, which will debut with Apple’s latest wearable.

WatchOS 9 will also be available in the $250 Apple Watch SE 2 . Apple revealed this cheaper option during its September showcase, as well, clocking in at $249 and $299 for the GPS and cellular versions, respectively. It will be available on September 16 alongside Apple Watch Series 8 .

Although it doesn’t come with the same tech under the hood, the SE 2 looks like a big improvement over the original. It’s 20% faster than the previous model with the new S8 processor, according to Apple, and it comes with the same crash detection features as its more expensive sibling.

Going into the event, rumors pointed to Apple launching a Pro version of its Apple Watch, which we got in the form of the Apple Watch Ultra . It’s targeted at fitness enthusiasts and clocks in at $799 regardless of the model you choose. It’s launching slightly later than the other wearables on September 23.

The two new bands are interesting, but the Apple Watch Ultra earns its price with the build quality. Apple says the battery can last through a long-distance triathlon without losing its GPS or heart rate capabilities, and it comes with a titanium casing with water resistance up to 100 meters. It’s larger to accommodate a bigger battery, but more room means Apple was able to design the Digital Crown for users wearing gloves.

Perhaps the most exciting addition is the Action Button, which allows you to track a race while you’re running, set waypoints on a hike, and even use GPS data to retrace your steps.

We’ve been waiting for the AirPods Pro 2 for a while, and Apple finally showed them off during its September 2022 event. They look largely similar to the original version, still sporting active noise-cancellation (ANC) and Bluetooth, but they come with the new H2 processor. This updated processor enables personalized spatial audio , which is a feature that allows iPhones to use their True Depth cameras to look into your ears and build a personalized spatial audio profile.

Other improvements include a redesigned audio driver and up to six hours of battery life without the case (with the case, you get a total of 30 hours). The case is seeing an upgrade outside of battery life, too, with the addition of Apple’s popular Find My feature.

The AirPods Pro 2 will launch on September 23 for $249. Pre-orders start on September 9.

Apple focused the back half of its event on the upcoming iPhone 14 range , kicking off its announcements with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus . The base model retains the 6.1-inch screen, while the new Plus model offers a slightly larger option at 6.7 inches. The iPhone 14 will set you back $799, the Plus will run $899, and they’ll be available on September 16 and October 7, respectively.

Both feature Apple’s A15 Bionic processor, which was the chip behind the iPhone 13 Pro last generation. They also both come with an upgraded 12-megapixel camera and an aluminum body with Ceramic Shield glass over the screen.

For flagship chasers, Apple also introduced the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max . These two phones come with the upgraded A16 Bionic processor, which is the first to use a 4nm manufacturing process for much more power in a smaller package. Prices remain unchanged compared to the previous generation at $999 for the Pro and $1,099 for the Pro Max, and they’ll both be available on September 16.

More power is welcome, but Apple made other improvements, as well. The new 48MP camera sensor is 65% larger than the previous model for better lowlight performance. You also get a set of 12MP cameras for telephoto and ultrawide shots, as well as the motion sensors inside the Apple Watch Series 8 for crash detection and reporting.

These phones also feature thinner bezels compared to the base models, as well as the Super Retina XDR display, which Apple says can top out at 2,000 nits of peak brightness. In addition, the Pro models come with an always-on display feature, which allows the screen to dim and go down to as little as a 1Hz refresh rate.

Apple didn’t make a big deal about it, but we learned that the iPhone 14 won’t support SIM cards in the U.S., instead relying exclusively on eSIM technology. eSIMs are virtual SIM cards that have been optional in phones for several years, but Apple is forcing the hand of the rest of the market by attempting to kill off SIM cards with the launch of the iPhone 14.

Rounding out the show was the announcement of Dynamic Island. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max no longer feature a notch and instead come with a small pill-shaped cutout that Apple is calling Dynamic Island. Apple says it’s meant to make the marriage between software and hardware more seamless, and it acts as a small hub for your background apps.

You can access a slew of controls with Dynamic Island, like answering calls, checking on sports scores, and tracking the progress of ride-sharing services. It may not be as revolutionary as Apple is billing it, but Dynamic Island seems like a key feature of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max that makes multi-tasking much easier.

The Apple Vision Pro is one of Apple’s most fascinating new product launches. It’s the first new product line from Apple since the Apple Watch, but the hype around it has been more like when Apple first introduced the original iPhone. Of course, Apple was not the first to the market with a VR/AR headset, but it is definitely what would be considered the most “mainstream” option out there, considering the brand name.

When Apple announced the Apple Vision Pro on June 5, 2023, during its WWDC 2023 keynote, I was excited. After years of rumors, it was finally happening. Preorders started on January 19, 2024, and the  Apple Vision Pro launched on February 2, 2024, in the U.S. The problem? It costs at least $3,500, making it a hard sell for many as a first-generation Apple product.

“Do I need all that?” That’s the question on the mind of shoppers before they splurge a now-standard $1,000 asking price for a top-tier phone in 2024. Ideally, that dilemma should be there. The likes of Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max have won laurels for a handful of standout features they offer. But you might not need those standout features at all.

I’ve been on that road, and more frequently than I have the temerity to admit. For some reason, regret comes as part of the $1,200 flagship parcel. That's unless your phone is a part of your creative or work process, or you just don’t care and only want the latest and greatest for the vanity of it. A segment like that certainly exists, but that affluent user base doesn’t dictate the journey of a product.

What we expect from Apple’s iPhone 14 event

Iphone 14, apple watch series 8, new airpods pro and maybe, just maybe, an ar/vr headset preview (but probably not).

Don’t you hate it when they give everything away in the headline? So, a belated spoiler warning that, indeed, the iPhone 14 is almost certainly going to be the big headline announcement at Apple’s September event. A few other things seem close to certain, as well, including the Apple Watch Series 8.

As ever, there may be one or two wildcards at the event. It will be interesting to see precisely how much Apple ends up announcing next week. The company was more than happy to spread announcements across events, in the two+ years when everything suddenly went online. The simple truth is it’s a lot easier to ask people to drop everything to cover your event when it involves sitting in front of a computer instead of flying across the U.S. This one, on the other hand, is most likely going to be worth the flight (I mean, I hope — no refunds on the tickets).

The company sent out invites earlier this month, sporting a galaxy formed into the Apple logo and the words “Far Out.” A subsequent animation shows the constellation spinning around to reveal a heart. There’s often some meaning hidden in the invite art, and speculation has been rampant in the intervening week.

My first thought was something to do with the company’s rumored AR/VR headset. Others have suggested that this might have something to do with the long-rumored satcom technology for Apple devices, which didn’t make it in time for last year’s event. Others still believe it might be a reference to the improved imaging on the new iPhones.

So, let’s start with the iPhone 14 . Hard to believe, but the device had its 15th birthday this June. So, what does Apple have planned for the crystal anniversary? Rumor has it that the high-end devices are reportedly doing the heavy lifting this time out (expect some of these upgrades to trickle down to the lower cost models in the coming year or two).

The most surprising bit of news this time around may be the long-awaited loss of the notch on the Pro and Pro Max. There’s some debate over the exact configuration, but a hole punch (as we’ve seen on a number of Android handsets over the years) is likely to arrive in its place, perhaps coupled with a secondary “pill” design. So you’re getting more real estate, but compromising with a pair of camera cutouts.

Another longstanding Android feature — the always-on display — is rumored for the more premium models. The main camera is said to be getting a major bump, up to a 48-megapixel sensor. That’s for the wide-angle, with is paired with a couple of 12-megapixel cameras (telephoto and ultrawide).

The chip is also getting updated to the more powerful A16 — again, that may well be a premium-only upgrade here. We know that a move to USB-C is inevitable, given recent legislation in the EU that will require device makers to embrace that universal standard. Though despite the fact that similar laws have been floated for a number of locales — including the U.S. and India — the iPhone 14 is expected to be the Lightning Port’s last stand for the line. Speaking of last stands, the iPhone Mini may be gone from the line altogether. That’s a big blow for fans of the small phone out there — a number of whom are currently employed by TechCrunch. So expect a…spirited post or two on these pages, should that come to pass. The new line is expected to come in two 6.1-inch and two 6.7-inch models, with a standard and Pro version of each.

The Apple Watch Series 8 is the other big expected headline here. The latest version of Apple’s market-dominating smartwatch is expected in three flavors, per rumors. There’s the SE (getting its first big update sine 2020), which will maintain the same footprint as the Series 7, along with a larger Series 8 and a new outdoor/sports model, designed to take on the Garmins of the world.

Along with upping the screen size, all three devices may also get upgraded to the new S8 chip. Along with software improvements, the system may finally get a new low-power mode, which would go a ways toward improving battery life — still the single largest problem with the Apple Watch, compared to the rest of the field.

Perhaps the most overdue item in the list: the AirPods Pro . The standard AirPods have gotten a few updates, but the higher-end models haven’t seen one since they were introduced way back in 2019. Three years is forever in the earbud world, and the competition has had plenty of time to catch up and even — in a few cases — pass Apple here.

Lossless audio is rumored. There may be a redesign, as well, that could remove the iconic clicking stem. That would present a fairly dramatic change to the device’s controls. Another interesting potential item is the addition of sound for the case, which can chime to work better with the Find My feature.

Meanwhile, iPads  may appear, including an M2 iPad Pro model, but the consensus appears to be that the company will throw one more final event ahead of the holidays, where we’ll also get new Macs sporting the latest chips, incluing the long-awaited — and much redesigned — return of the Mac Pro. I wouldn’t rule out either one entirely for this event, but they’re less certain than the above.

The AR/VR headset is the true wildcard in all of this. Rumors have persisted for some time, and have only gotten hotter as the company has applied for trademarks including, “Reality One,” “Reality Pro” and “Reality Processor.” It’s also already said to have shown off a version of the headset to shareholders. At best, a preview could arrive, in order to entice developers to start building for the product.

A couple of odds and ends:

• The return of the HomePod ? We’re talking something potentially similar to the original, full-size model and, perhaps a product with a display, à la the Nest Hub or Echo Show. Apple really needs a proper hub for HomeOS.
• A new Apple TV.
• Release dates for iOS 16 and watchOS 9 seem likely. We know we’ll have to wait a bit longer for the new iPadOS . And macOS Ventura could seemingly arrive during this event, but a safer bet is the aforementioned unannounced October event.

Everything Apple Announced Today: iPhone 14, Apple Watch Ultra, and More

It’s September, and you know what that means: iPhone season. Today, Apple held an event at its Cupertino, California, headquarters, where it unveiled annual updates to its mobile devices. There are four new iPhones 14, a more durable Apple Watch for adventure enthusiasts, and a new pair of AirPods Pro.

Here’s everything Apple announced.

iPhone 14 Pro costs $999, or $1,099 for the larger Pro Max.

Did you like the idea of an iPhone Mini? Well, too bad. Apple has nixed its smallest phone in favor of a new iPhone 14 Plus , which sits a rung above the just announced iPhone 14 but below the top-tier iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max . Like its Pro Max sibling, the 14 Plus has a 6.7-inch screen. The standard-size iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro have 6.1-inch displays.

Outside of this, most of the changes with this year’s iPhone lineup are coming to the Pro models. The infamous notch, for example, which housed the sensor components necessary for Face ID, has now slimmed down to a pill-shaped cutout in the same area, not unlike most modern Android phones . It's called the “Dynamic Island” and Apple's making it interactive. If you're on a call, for example, this area will passively show you call controls if you press and hold it. It's a smart way to reclaim the space. There’s also always-on display support, so you won’t have to tap your phone screen or pick it up to see notifications or the time of day.

The sensor notch can now show notifications. Apple calls it Dynamic Island.

The Pro models are also the only handsets to use the brand-new A16 Bionic processor. It’s the first time the standard non-Pro iPhones are sticking with a prior year’s chipset, but this is likely due to supply chain constraints and aimed at keeping costs low. The A15 Bionic in the iPhone 14 is still a super speedy chip, but you won’t get the very best performance.

The primary camera on the Pros will finally move away from 12 megapixels and will utilize a 48-megapixel sensor (a common trait among most Android phones). More megapixels doesn’t necessarily mean better photos, but it will let you capture more detail, and you can print your photos at larger sizes without losing sharpness. Apple says it's using a new Photonic Engine for its image processing on all the new iPhones that deliver improved low-light performance across the board for all the cameras, and a new Action video stabilized mode lets you capture smoother footage than ever before (at a lower resolution). 

All of the new iPhones support features like Car Crash Detection, and will get two years of included support for Apple's new Emergency SOS via Satellite feature, which lets you point your iPhone at a satellite to contact emergency services in the event of a dire situation in an area with no cellular service.

iPhone 14 in all the new colors. The base-model 14 starts at $799.

The iPhone 14 costs $799 and is available September 16. The iPhone 14 Plus is $899 and will be available October 7. The iPhone 14 Pro is $999, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max is $1,099. They’re up for preorder on September 9 and go on sale September 16.

Apple Watch Ultra is on sale now for $799.

Apple’s yearly watch upgrades tend to be iterative. After all, if it ain’t broke, why fix it? That makes this year’s extra rugged and tough Ultra Watch the most exciting Apple wearable announcement since the optical heart sensor landed in the Series 4.

Apple consulted with extreme athletes at the top of their fields, like ultrarunning celeb Scott Jurek, to design the Ultra. The watch is aimed at the premium, over-$500 adventure market that is currently committed to super-fancy Garmins. With a case measuring 49 mm, this is Apple’s biggest watch ever, which allows it to boast an improvement we’ve been anticipating for years: slightly better battery life! Apple claims the Ultra gets 36 hours on a single charge and up to 60 hours in an extended-power mode. (I do feel obligated to note here that the Garmin Instinct 2 gets up to three weeks on a single charge.)

The other changes, however, are very exciting. The Ultra is swathed in rugged titanium and topped with a durable sapphire crystal display. A new action button in international orange allows you to switch which sports you’re tracking with a press. A precision dual-frequency GPS system tracks your location, even in environments like cities or tree cover that frequently gunk up satellite signals. And a bigger display makes it easier to see all the new advanced fitness metrics that will debut in WatchOS 9, including a new “night mode” that switches the display to a reddish hue in dark environments to preserve your natural night vision.

Apple Watch Ultra comes with one of three straps.

Three bands are available, each aimed at keeping the big honkin’ watch on your wrist in either alpine, trail, or ocean environments. Apple has even bigger plans for the Ultra, including a new Oceanic+ app that will let divers use the watch as a wrist-mounted dive computer—a pretty clear swing at Garmin’s popular high-end dive watches.

The most surprising part of the announcement? The Apple Watch Ultra costs $799. You can preorder it today, and it will ship on September 23. While $799 is pricey, for these specs it is well within the expected Garmin price range. Two and a half days of battery still isn’t enough to go on a basic weekend camping trip, but we’re getting closer.

Apple Watch Series 8 starts at $399.

Most of the groundbreaking Apple Watch improvements went to the Ultra, so it’s probably not a surprise that if you already own a Series 7 watch, you might not need to upgrade immediately to the new Series 8. This year’s standout health feature is a new body temperature sensor (although, again, I feel obliged to point out that a similar temperature sensor has existed on other watches for years). It’s aimed at tracking women’s ovulation and fertility, although in a post- Roe world you might want to reconsider whether you track that information.

The Series 8 includes Crash Detection, which is also a feature on the Ultra and the iPhone. Two new motion sensors, an improved gyroscope, and a high G-force accelerometer can detect a severe car crash and connect you to emergency services, provide location, and notify your predetermined emergency contacts. Battery life hasn’t improved, although Apple announced a new Low Power mode that can give you up to 36 hours of battery life by temporarily disabling features like the always-on display and auto-workout detection. Cellular models will now also support international roaming.

The new SE is still the affordable Apple Watch, with crash detection, a larger display, and the same chip as the Series 8. The Series 8 will start at $399 for GPS and $499 for the cellular model, along with three months of Apple’s Fitness+ home workout service. The SE starts at $249. The watches will be available on September 16. Time to finally pour one out for the Series 3, which is no longer available.

AirPods Pro 2nd Gen are $249 and go on sale this Friday.

Apple’s new AirPods Pro look like the last version of AirPods Pro . While there’s not a huge difference in looks, there are a few changes in the guts.

The second-generation AirPods Pro have a new custom-made chip called H2 that Apple says boosts the sound quality and noise-canceling abilities of the buds. Battery life is slightly better, at six hours of listening time and 30 hours total in the charging case. It’s better than the previous version but still on the low end compared to other wireless earbuds . There are new touch sensor controls on the stems of the buds, where you can change volume with a swipe of your finger. Apple says it has improved motion detection in the new Pros, which lets it better track fitness activities.

The case for the AirPods Pro gets some improvements as well, most notably the ability to charge on an Apple Watch puck and to sync with Apple’s Find My app and emit a beeping sound to help you locate them when they’re lost. The new AirPods cost $249 and will be available for preorder on September 9.

The new iPhones come with an emergency SOS feature that can connect to satellites even in places that don’t have cell coverage. Apple says the service will be free for two years if you buy an iPhone 14. Presumably, there will be a monthly fee after that.

If you already have an Apple Watch or an iPhone, you’ll get a software update notification on Monday, September 12; iOS 16 and watchOS 9 will be available as free software updates on that day.

Apple didn’t announce any news about the iPad or Macs today, which all but confirms that we’ll get another Apple event in a month or so with updates to both of those product lines. Both the iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura should arrive in October.

How To Watch Apple's "Far Out" Event

Taking place on september 7 at 10 a.m. pt / 1 p.m. et..

Apple is gearing up for its third live event of this year, “Far Out,” on September 7.

The event, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET, will be held in person for select media personnel, though it will also be streaming live online globally. The live stream will be available to watch on Apple.com ,  Apple’s YouTube channel and the Apple TV app. A recording of the event will likely become available immediately following its conclusion.
