Academic regalia, also known as the “cap and gown,” varies according to the degree conferred and the level of scholarship attained. The bachelor’s gown is a simple robe that covers the entire body. The master’s gown has longer, closed sleeves. The doctoral robe usually is the most elaborate; it is made of velvet, has three stripes on the arms, and includes a hood.

For faculty and doctoral robes, the robe itself is usually specific to the university, while the hood trim indicates the academic discipline. In addition, the faculty member wears the robe indicative of his or her highest degree. If the highest degree is an honorary degree, the faculty member has a choice of wearing the robe of the school that conferred the honorary degree, or the one that conferred the highest earned degree. Bachelor’s and master’s candidates wear a square mortarboard. Doctoral students and faculty usually wear a tam.

History of Academic Regalia

Academic dress.

Like other American colonial colleges, Penn borrowed its 18th-century Commencement rituals directly from the English universities. In England the history of academic dress reaches back to the early days of the oldest schools. As early as the second half of the fourteenth century, the statutes of certain colleges prohibited "excess in apparel" and required the wearing of a long gown. It is still an open question as to whether academic dress finds its sources chiefly in ecclesiastical or in civilian dress. It is often suggested that gowns and hoods were the simplest, most effective method of staying warm in the unheated, stone buildings which housed medieval scholars.

In April 1887, on the recommendation of a committee of the faculty, the Trustees adopted the "'Pennsylvania' System of Academic Costume." The colors and trimmings of hoods and caps were regularized according to faculty and degree. Beginning with the Commencement of 1887 the "'Pennsylvania' System" was published in each year's program and adherence to its rules was expected of trustees, faculty and students alike. Beginning in 1896, the "'Pennsylvania' System" was superseded by the "Intercollegiate System," which has continued in effect to the present time.

The gowns used in American academic ceremonies vary according to the highest degree awarded to the wearer.
The gown for the bachelor's degree has pointed sleeves. It is designed to be worn closed.
The gown for the master's degree has an oblong sleeve. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut and the front has an arc cut away. Master's gowns may be worn open or closed.
The doctoral gown is a more elaborate costume faced down the front with black velvet and across the sleeves with three bars of the same; these facings and crossbars may be of velvet of the color distinctive to the field of study to which the degree pertains. The doctoral gown has bell-shaped sleeves and may be worn open or closed. Some institutions have authorized doctoral gowns in colors other than the customary black; holders of the University of Pennsylvania Ph.D. may wear red and blue gowns.

The mortarboard cap is standard, although soft square-topped caps are permissible. Recipients of doctorates may wear a gold tassel fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap; all others wear black. At Commencement, graduates wear the tassel on the right side, moving it to the left when their degree is conferred. Faculty participating in academic ceremonies wear the tassel to the left throughout the proceedings.

The hoods are lined in silk with the official color or colors of the institution which granted the highest degree held by the wearer; more than one color is shown by division of the field color in a variety of ways, such as by chevron or chevrons. University of Pennsylvania graduates wear a hood lined in red with a blue chevron. The binding or edging of the hood is in velvet, with widths of two inches, three inches and five inches for the bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees respectively; the color of the border indicates the field of study to which the degree pertains. The colors signifying degrees granted by the University of Pennsylvania are as follows:

Overview of academic dress.

The origins of today’s academic dress including the robe, hood and classical cap trace back to the first universities in medieval times. Students wore long, sober clothing reflecting their status in society and identifying them as scholars.Whilst fashions changed, the sense of purpose and propriety evoked by formal academic dress along with practicalities of marking students out in a crowd ensured that the traditional garments were kept.

Many Oxbridge colleges, schools and some ecclesiastical services still use the gown and hood, however it is more commonly seen at degree ceremonies.

PLACING YOUR ORDER

Q. I'm not sure what degree I am on. A. Unfortunately, we are unable to tell you what you have been studying for, please ask your course tutor or the university or college registry.

Q. How can I confirm that my order has been placed? A. You can see if your order has been placed by accessing the Review / Amend order screen which can be entered from the home page drop down menu.

Q. I am unable to print my confirmation e-mail - can I collect my gown without it? A. It is not imperative that you have the printed copy, but take a note of the number - which can be found on the Review / Amend order screen, as it does speed things up at the ceremony, in any event, our representatives will have detailed lists on the day of your ceremony.

Q. What forms of payment do you accept? A. Credit Cards: Visa, Mastercard Debit cards: Visa Debit, Maestro and Electron

Q. Can I go into my nearest shop to place my order in person? A. In order for us to process the orders efficiently, orders should be placed via the website or the Call Centre.

Q. Can I go into my nearest shop to have my measurements taken for my outfit? A. Sorry we do not provide this service in our shops.

ABOUT YOUR GRADUATION OUTFIT

Q. What does 'Height' mean? A. Your height means the measurement from the top of your head to the ground. This can be in metres or feet and inches.

Q. What does full outfit mean? A. Full outfit means all the required items for the award that you are receiving and is usually a gown, hood and hat although this varies according to the institution.

Q. How will I know how to wear the outfit? A. We will help you put it on and ensure you are wearing it correctly.

WHEN TO PLACE YOUR ORDER

Q. How much notice is required before I book my graduation outfit? A. Please book early to be sure of your order as we cannot always guarantee an order if you leave your booking later than 21 days before your Ceremony (being the date agreed for the Hire outfit to be available). Please check the website to see if the ceremony date option is still available or contact the Call Centre to establish if it is still open to book.

Q. What can I do if I am too late to order my outfit on-line? A. You may be able to place a late order. Go to the enquiry desk in the robing area early on the day of your ceremony and our staff will do their best to help you. We are usually only able to accept cash or cheques at the ceremony. Please note we cannot guarantee we will be able to provide robes for late orders.

DELIVERY, COLLECTION AND RETURNS

Q. When will my purchased outfit arrive? A. This will depend on the type of outfit you have ordered. The dispatch time will be stated on your shopping basket when placing your order on the internet. Please make a note of this.

Q. Where do I collect my outfit from? A. Your university or college has set aside a special area for you to collect your outfit and put it on. Details are normally given to you in your handout regarding ceremony arrangements. Please confirm with your registry.

Q. Will I receive my purchased accessories with my hire outfit? A. Hire orders will be delivered direct to your graduation ceremony. All purchased orders will be delivered to your specified delivery address (not your institution).

Q. When can I collect my outfit? A. Details will have been given to you by your university or college, however as a general rule Ede and Ravenscroft will normally be available to robe you at least two hours before the ceremony.

Q. What does Extra Time mean? A. The normal hire fee is usually for the ceremony day (or evening if it is just an evening ceremony). This enables you to wear the outfit for your graduation ceremony and have private and official photos taken if you want. If you opt for Extra 7 days hire you can take the robes away from where you had your graduation ceremony and keep them for one week, returning them to us in the postage paid bag provided. Instructions regarding the use of this bag are listed inside the bag. You must obtain proof of posting. You are not allowed to take your outfit out of the United Kingdom.

Q. Can I return my outfit to my nearest Ede & Ravenscroft shop? A. Please return all postal items as requested to the address as stated in the back of your gown.

Academic dress

Full academic dress should be worn at all formal University ceremonies including matriculation and degree ceremonies. Sub fusc (from the Latin sub fuscus meaning dark brown) should be worn beneath your academic gown and is also required when sitting examinations.

Sub fusc and the wider academic dress code at Oxford is solemn and modest, in line with our ceremonies, and traditionally comprised of plain black dress. Solemn ceremony is observed to focus on the University bestowing what is most precious to it, namely membership and degrees, while paying respect to those who have earned this most precious prize.

Your sub fusc

You are required to wear your preference from the following as sub fusc:

1. one of:

dark suit with black socks, or
dark skirt with black tights or stockings, or
dark trousers with black socks or black hosiery

Socks, tights and stockings must be worn and must cover the ankle entirely . There should be no gap between the bottom of the trouser leg or skirt and the top of the socks or stockings.

2. dark jacket, if required - worn underneath the gown 3. plain black shoes with a dark sole 4. plain white collared shirt or blouse with sleeves 5. white bow tie, black bow tie, black full-length tie, or black ribbon.

Additional notes

‘Dark’ in this context generally means black, a very dark charcoal grey, or very dark blue may be permitted, but must be virtually black. All clothing must be plain; pinstripes or patterns are not permitted.
When wearing sub-fusc, your clothing must not leave any part of your legs, ankles, or feet uncovered.
The mortar board may be worn outdoors but must be removed as you enter buildings and carried whilst indoors. Soft caps may be kept on indoors.
Ministers of religion may wear clerical dress, with a gown over, when attending ceremonies.
If you wear a head dress / scarf for religious reasons, a black scarf should be worn.
Members of the armed forces may wear service dress under their gown, in place of sub fusc. This is only applicable to members of The British Armed Forces in the UK. Uniform caps should be removed when indoors.

Student members not in appropriate full academic dress may not be permitted into matriculation or degree ceremonies.

Students who are not able to wear traditional sub fusc for religious or health reasons are encouraged to contact their college in advance for support requesting a dispensation from the Regulations. Dispensation requests should be made in advance to the Proctors who can be contacted at [email protected]

Academic gowns for students

Commoners gown

Worn by students taking undergraduate or undergraduate master’s degrees: BA, BFA, BTh, MPhys etc

Black gown of cotton or synthetic material with a turned over collar. It has no sleeves but has a streamer on each side with square pleating hanging to the full length of the gown, which falls to the hip.

Scholars gown

Worn by students taking undergraduate or undergraduate master’s degrees, and: are the recipient of a scholarship* AND/OR have excelled in their preliminary examinations*

*Your college can advise you further.

Black gown of Russell cord or synthetic material in full style with a gathered stiffened yoke behind and short open sleeves. The gown should reach the wearer’s knees.

Advanced students gown (also known as the Graduate gown)

Worn by those taking postgraduate taught, or postgraduate research degrees (e.g. MSc, MPhil, DPhil etc.)

Black gown of cotton or synthetic material of the same style as the Commoners’ gown, but reaches to the knees of the wearer.

Information for examinations

You are required to wear sub fusc for all your examinations; plus your academic student gown and mortar board/soft cap. Your college/department can advise you on the appropriate gown to wear (see above; Academic Gowns for Students )

Undergraduates/Undergraduate Masters: For music recitals, oral examinations, presentations and any other form of viva voce examination, you must always wear the commoners’ gown.

You may remove your mortar board/soft cap and gown during the examination itself.

In addition, students traditionally wear carnations for examinations (though this is not compulsory):

First examination = a white carnation
Intermediate examination(s) = a pink carnation
Final examination = a red carnation

Degree ceremonies

In all cases you are required to wear full academic dress to your degree ceremony. If not properly dressed you may be refused admission to the degree ceremony and graduated in absentia. For most degree ceremonies, you will be required to change your academic gown and/or hood during the ceremony.

Students having a DPhil or Higher Doctorate conferred should wear the gown of their existing University of Oxford status (and the hood if there is one) during the first part of the ceremony. You will change into the gown (and hood if applicable) of your new degree at the appropriate time during the ceremony.

Students having a graduate masters degree conferred, and students having the degree of BA, BFA, BTh, Undergraduate Masters (e.g. MBiochem, MChem, MMath etc.) conferred, should consult their college as to whether they should enter the ceremony wearing the gown of their current status, or the status which will be conferred. In all cases, the gown and hood of the status to be conferred will be required as a minimum.

Your college will advise you about which gown(s)/hood(s) you will need for your degree ceremony.

Mortar boards may be worn outside, but removed when inside and carried. Soft caps and bonnets may be worn inside and outside.
