English Dub Review: The Case Study of Vanitas “Hands Upon a Nightmare”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Chloe has used the Alteration Engine to manifest a physical form for Naenia so she can kill her for taking Jean-Jacques true name. But killing the physical Naenia is harder than she expected, and Vanitas calls for her to stop. But it’s too late, and Naenia turns into Queen Faustina, the first vampire of the Crimson Moon, being used as a vessel to be Death’s Keeper. Chloe’s powers cause a crazy explosion in the area and suddenly the immediate vicinity is transformed into a magical wasteland. Can Vanitas and Noe stop Chloe from losing control and do something about Naenia before it’s too late?

Every week is pretty crazy when it comes to the Case Study of Vanitas, but this week’s new dubbed episode takes things to a whole new level. Chloe tries to kill Naenia, who turns out to be the first vampire queen, and then everything goes downhill from there for Vanitas, Noe, and the people of Gévaudan. Between the chaotic Chloe and the evil unleashed of Naenia, it’s a wonder that Vanitas and Noe aren’t losing their own minds right now.

The episode starts out where things left off last time, aka Chloe in murder mode. It was a nice twist last week that Chloe’s true target turned out to be the mysterious Naenia, who I still don’t really know anything about, but Chloe’s plan stops being so perfect at this point. Turns out, it’s really hard to kill a godlike super vampire evil overlord? Chloe does seem to kill the manifested form, but Vanitas says something about how now Naenia will remember who she really is, which is, surprise, the vampire queen. I’m not clear on exactly how this happened, or what the implications are, but it sure sounds like a big deal.

What is immediately clear is that Chloe can’t handle all this pressure that’s been mounting upon her back for so many years. There’s a Big Bang and now the landscape is made up of floaty bits of land like in a video game—only this is all too real. Vanitas tells Noe that if Chloe doesn’t get her defensive powers under control, the entirety of Gévaudan could go up in flames soon. He and Noe set off to help her, but first they run into Roland, who has arrived with a bunch of fellow Chasseurs. I’m not sure how I feel about all the previous characters also showing up in this storyline, but it is somewhat interesting that Roland is working for the church while also being suspicious of its true motives. Guess we’ll see how that plays out.

There’s also a large portion of the episode focused on Jeanne, and it kind of sucks. It’s all just a big mishmash of stuff we’ve seen before, like how she failed to kill Chloe when she was ordered to, and how she has lost her sense of self due to being told she’s nothing more than a pawn for Lord Ruthven. It’s pretty cliche ’emotionless warrior’ stuff like thinking she has no purpose, is just a tool, has no will of her own. Like, yeah, we get it already.

Overall, this episode had some interesting bits to it, but it doesn’t feel quite as epic as it could have, mainly due to two things: Naenia not being as well explained as she could have been, and reductant and pointless Jeanne flashbacks and inner monologues stealing focus from the craziness currently happening.

Overview: America’s favorite cracker magnate is back, baby! The Hornsby family returns for more character-driven and commercial drama when they’re forced to put out fires wherever they turn. Matt’s school, J. Davis High, becomes a microcosm for conflict when Royal Crackers gets pushed out of the cafeteria in favor of a healthier alternative that just so happens to be peddled by the Hornsbys’ greatest rivals, the Dennisons. Elsewhere, Deb’s affinity for a new Peloton-esque exercise routine throws a curious wrench in the spokes of her relationship with Stebe. Each Hornsby seeks out validation in their own respective ways, but it might take catastrophic conflict and the destruction of a business or two in order to get these wounded souls satisfaction. Our Take: Royal Crackers has been one of the biggest surprises to come out of Adult Swim in the last few years and an animated series that truly attempts to do something different. There’s a rough-around-the-edges visual aesthetic that’s perhaps kept some audiences at a distance, but the moving characters and heightened storytelling makes it easy to fall in love with this series. Royal Crackers’ first season heavily leaned into marketing that turned up the “Succession, but with crackers” angle and it’s reassuring to see its sophomore season get out of its own way and be more confident in its own skin. The Hornsby family are still deeply dysfunctional and detached, yet these two early entries from season two expand the series’ scope in ways that are both entertaining and organic. Crackers have never been so comedc. Royal Crackers’ second season begins with many compelling scenes where the entire Hornsby family work together and their irrational love for money enables one another to get crazier and bring out the worst in each other. These episodes move further away from the central power struggle within the Hornsby family and there is a greater attempt for them to work together and take on the community, which is a clever angle and an effective way to build upon the chaos. Royal Crackers messes with the Hornsbys’ social standing as they try to find peace within the community. The Hornsbys do their best to awkwardly blend in and learn how to accept themselves before they're accepted by others. That being said, this season emphasizes that the Hornsby family are the good ones here and not just a deluded, out of touch cracker conglomerate. It’s a subtle change, albeit a fundamental one, that helps the audience root for the Hornsbys and empathize with their plight, rather than simply pity them or laugh at their antics, which could occasionally be the timbre back in season one. There’s also some playful drama to be had here over the stress of being under scrutiny in a public venue, like a television broadcast, and how this pushes characters like Stebe to unexpected places. Royal Crackers focuses more on the Hornsby family’s fragile egos, frail images, and how this is all liable to crumble like a cracker. The Dennison family are back this season, bigger than ever, and continue to function as satisfying rivals that pose a threat to the entire Hornsby family. One of the silliest and most ridiculous details about the Hornsby/Dennison feud is that Dennison Snacks is pushing kale chips against Royal Crackers, considering that crackers aren’t even that unhealthy of a snack food. It’s not like they’re peddling donuts, cookies, or even anything that’s dense in sugar. It’s apples to organic apples here, which makes this crusade all the more outlandish and entertaining. It perfectly exemplifies the broader mania that often drives Royal Crackers storylines. The Dennison family drama boils over into a larger meditation on bullying, whether it’s in school, the community, or America as a whole, all with various degrees of imposing fascism. It’s a smart, effective way to juxtapose Matt’s personal problems with universal ones. On that note, Royal Crackers’ premiere features one of the stronger Matt storylines and he emerges more as a character this season than the shy cipher role that he largely fulfilled back in season one. Royal Crackers’ first season finale, “Craftopia,” did wonders for his character and so it’s satisfying to see the series continue to explore this and build upon it, rather than have him regress or decide that season one already covered this material while Royal Crackers instead shifts its focus to the rest of the Hornsby family. That being said, Royal Crackers really shines a light on Stebe and Deb’s marriage dynamics in a realistic manner that functions as the beating heart of this sweet animated comedy. It’s endearing to get stories that authentically explore marital malaise that don’t purely reduce these issues to broad punchlines. Theo, who’s frequently positioned as the most ridiculous member of the Hornsby family, also experiences a validating identity crisis. There’s a really satisfying wrinkle through these episodes where Theo turns to George Zeebos as a new father figure and someone who will better appreciate his odd interests, even if it’s a toxic, manipulative dynamic that’s doing demonstrably more harm than good. It’s a dark path for Theo to head down, but another layered character dynamic that fits the series’ themes. It speaks to the vulnerable, flawed nature of the Hornsby family and how they all really just want to find love and acceptance, even if it has to come from a heartless corporate overlord. Some of the strongest episodes from Royal Crackers’ first season are the ones that really play with form and indulge in science fiction and fantasy, like “Factory 37.” It’s encouraging to see that these more outlandish genre decisions are still very front and center in season two. There’s fantastical chaos like violent, bloody massacres, robot adultery, and a Terminator-esque billionaire CEO in these two episodes that provide so much personality and flavor to the franchise. Even the season premiere, which is a reasonably grounded and human story, ends with a completely ridiculous stinger where a human being shatters to pieces, defies reality, and it’s goddamn glorious. This is Royal Crackers in a nutshell – real, emotional storytelling that occasionally explodes into ludicrous lunacy. It feels like vintage Adult Swim programming in the best way possible. “Fight for J. Davis High” and “MyCycle” both go out on surprisingly sweet resolutions that focus on understanding over admonishment. As silly as Royal Crackers gets, it’s appreciated to see sincerity creep in and for the episodes’ conclusions to push commendable values that stand for something more substantial than simply creating the silliest story possible. There’s genuine weight to these episodes’ messages, which is what helps separate Royal Crackers from other series of its ilk. It functions as a testament to this show’s staying power beyond two seasons and that it’s far from out of ideas in its weird, wonderful world. It’s the secret ingredient to Royal Crackers’ success that guarantees that it’s not just some “unhealthy snack.” These are real characters with real things to say, even if they do frequently devolve into manic chaos. Royal Crackers never forgets that it needs to do more than that. Royal Crackers comes out of the gate swinging in its second season. There’s such a strong energy, a snappy rhythm, and tight storytelling in these two episodes that naturally moves the narrative along. It’s a powerful start that will please those who enjoyed season one, but it’s also a perfect, accessible entrypoint for any newcomers who are curiously checking out Royal Crackers for the first time. These two episodes are an excellent summation of what the series is all about and the heightened characters who bring its stories to life. It’s a very natural, confident start to the season that hopefully only continues to build upon this fantastic foundation. Bring on the all-out war between the Hornsbys and Dennisons. 8/10 Royal Crackers Season 2 Cast

The Case Study of Vanitas: Vampire Lore Explained

The Case Study of Vanitas' vampires are different than most. Here's a deep look into the series' lore.

Jun Mochisuki's fantastical world of The Case Study of Vanitas is filled with magic and vampires - but not just any run-of-the-mill vampires. Dracula and Edward Cullen will find they have a few disadvantages compared to the residents of Altus Paris.

The creation of vampires does not relate to divine punishment or demonic ambitions in The Case Study of Vanitas. Instead, it was a result of a science experiment. An alchemist by the name Paracelsus conducted an experiment in order to prove his World Formula Theory. This was the idea that the world could be broken down into simple equations that could then be changed in order to alter pieces of reality. An example would be if someone had the plague, one could theoretically tamper with their formula and rid them of the illness. However, this experiment failed, resulting in an incredibly widespread backlash that interfered with reality itself. This became known as the Babel Incident, and through it, a new element known as Astermite came into being - as did vampires.

Noe Archiviste's Red Eyes

Vampires were once humans, but their formula was changed. In the immediate aftermath of the Babel Incident, people would go to sleep humans and wake up as vampires. The first vampire, known as the Vampire of the Crimson Moon, was Faustina, who became the vampire queen. It has been implied that because of her status and power, other vampires are not able to refuse her orders, and Ruthven has confirmed that if anyone ever insults the queen, most vampires fly into a blind rage. The vampire queen has retainers known as Beastias, or the Queen's Fangs, who are strong warriors that protect her and fight in her name. Two known Beastias are Veronica de Sade and Loki Oriflamme.

Vampires have the ability to influence the World Formula directly because of their ability to see it with their red eyes, and many use it in combat such as Dominique de Sade and her family creating ice, Lord Ruthven using fire, and Noe Archiviste walking on walls. Additionally, vampires possess 'true names' that they are told never to share with anyone else because their true names are a direct link to their very existence. These names can be corrupted through meddling with the World Formula , but there are only two known beings with the skill to do so: Naenia and Vanitas. These true names seem to consist not only of a name itself but also a title. An example would be Amerlia Ruth's true name being Florifel with the title She Who Guides Spring. These names seem to hint at the vampire's personality and preferences as seen with Chloe d'Apchier's being Canorus, She Who PLays Snow Crystals and her companion, Jean-Jaques' being Aprix, He Who Nestles Up to the Last Snows. Vanitas has often commented that a true name suites the vampire who possesses it.

The vampires of The Case Study of Vanitas follow some classic vampiric staples such as increased speed, strength, and healing, but the usual draw back is gone: vampires do not need blood to survive . Blood, either from a human or another vampire, for these bats serve as a boost of magical energy, allowing them to easily refigure formulas or heal from injuries. After the Babel Incident, humans and vampires had devolved into a war which resulted in vampires consuming more blood for healing than they normally would have taken, stirring up fear and prejudice.

After the war with humans, vampires removed themselves to another dimension named Altus which reflects the human world. There, vampires developed their own culture and politics, but they are not completely separated from the human world. They still hold some administrative positions and some vampires choose to live among human. There are, in rare cases, vampire and human coupling which result in dhampir, half vampires. These dhampirs are not completely welcome in either world and are more likely to group with other dhams. The information broker Dante and his companions Johann and Riche are such examples. Nowadays, blood is seen more as an indulgence, like wine. Some vampires can become addicted to blood, however, which leaves them with violent cravings. Some vampires even have a special skill in relation to drinking blood like how Noe possesses an Archiviste bloodline ability that allows him to view someone's memories through drinking their blood for the first time.

The Vampire of the Blue Moon's Mark of Possession

There are specific rules to blood drinking in The Case Study of Vanitas. Noe has stated that it is illegal to drink blood from someone unwilling, and vampires can leave a bit of their power with people they've drunk from. If a vampire drinks enough blood and has an intent to drink again, they can leave behind something called a mark of possession . This appears as a small mark unique to the vampire, somewhat like a tattoo, on a person's body, although it is unclear if a mark of possession only works on humans since there has yet to be a vampire bearing one. Vanitas is the only person we've seen with such a mark, one on his neck from Jeanne that looks like a thorny rose, and one on his wrist from the Vampire of the Blue Moon, also known as the original Vanitas or Luna. The latter seems to spread, forming what appear to be cracks down the human's arm the more he invokes Vanitas' power.

The Vampire of the Blue Moon serves as a boogeyman figure to vampires of the crimson moon. The Vampire of the Blue Moon was an outcast among the other vampires, and it is said because of this isolation and ridicule, they crafted a magical grimoire called the Book of Vanitas. This book has the incredibly terrifying power to actually access a vampire's true name, mangling it completely. Doing so curses vampires, leaving them bloodthirsty and aggressive with the desire to kill everyone in their path. Their name is converted into something called a malnomen, and this is the fate that vampires fear more than anything else.

There was only one way to stop a curse bearer, and that for a Bourreau to kill them. A Bourreau is a vampire who is paying for the crimes of their family; they are reduced to being nothing but emotionless killing machines under the control of the vampire senate. The Hellfire Witch, Jeanne, is one such executioner.

A malnomen by the name of Naenia, or Charlatan, personally sets out to corrupt true name, and while some vampires consent to becoming curse bearers, like Jean-Jaques and Loki Oriflamme, many are helpless against her attacks. But once a human appeared claiming the name Vanitas and wielding the blue moon vampire's book, things changed drastically. Vanitas uses the book's abilities to access a vampire's true name in order to heal malnomens, and that is where the anime starts.

Case Study of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 17

How would you rate episode 17 of the case study of vanitas (tv 2) community score: 4.4.

the case study of vanitas faustina

If Naenia is the goddess of funerary lament, the stealer of names, and granter of malnomen when she's in spirit form, who is she when she has a body? That's something that Chloé is determined to find out, and she's even rewritten the code of the universe to make it happen, using what has been correctly pointed out as an in-world version of Charles Babbage's analytical engine, casting herself as a vampiric Ada Lovelace. Up until the end of last week's episode, I hadn't even considered that Naenia could have a physical form, but she most assuredly does – and it may even be more fearsome than her Naenia guise, for she is Faustina, the lost queen of the vampires.

While there are many women in history who bear the name Faustina, it's more likely that she's intended to be a reference to Faust, the man who made a deal with the devil in exchange for knowledge and earthly pleasures. While we don't yet know for sure if Faustina made a similar deal with a member of Charlatan to gain her Naenia form, as Naenia she herself is certainly a purveyor of Faustian bargains, taking vampires' true names in exchange for powers they can't necessarily control. Even the fact that such people are known as pact-bearers can be seen as a reference to the pact the original Dr. Faust (or Faustus, if you prefer the Christopher Marlowe version) made with the devil, and while Naenia might not meet her victims at literal crossroads, she certainly does find them at points that could be termed the crossroads of their lives. We saw that very clearly with Jean-Jacques, who became the Beast of Gévaudan when he risked losing Chloé, but the flashback of Jeanne's past this week also indicates that she was at an emotional crossroads of sorts when she first met Naenia. The erstwhile queen seeks out those who have a clear choice between two paths forward and encourages them to take the darker road every time.

It's interesting stuff, because if Vanitas isn't careful, his own festering distrust of vampires could force Noé into a similar situation one of these days. There's a fascinating parallel presented this week, with Noé unhesitatingly diving off the edge of the world to save Vanitas held up against Jeanne allowing Chloé to plummet, unable to make herself go after her friend. Jeanne and Noé have both lost people who were important to them before – Jeanne's adoptive parents were beheaded during the vampire war – but where Jeanne finds herself despairing and without hope, allowing herself to be forced into the role of bourreau, Noé refuses to bow down to his sadness. He's got Murr and Dominique to keep him fully in this world, and while he'll never stop wishing that things could have been different with Louis, or even looking for a way to redeem his friend, he's also not going to let that take over his life. He has his ups and downs, but at the end of the day, Noé is grounded. However, his friendship with Vanitas (or whatever you want to call it) could endanger that standing. In part that's because losing a second person he's so close to would be emotionally devastating, but it's also because Vanitas still isn't inclined to fully trust Noé.

His explosion this week seems to indicate that's because Vanitas hasn't always been greeted as a savior by those he wishes to help, or even listened to when he tries to explain things. A piece of him seems to have internalized those vampires' refusal to hear him, although his dislike of overly helpful people (like Roland, who really does feel heaven-sent this week) may also have a similar root. Regardless, he suspected Naenia's true identity as Faustina before it was revealed, and Noé is pissed that he didn't share that thought. He's certainly within his rights there – if Vanitas refuses to treat him like a partner, how is he ever going to really help? But he's also hurt that Vanitas wouldn't trust him despite all they've been through, especially since Noé has rarely, if ever, done anything besides earnestly try his best to help. That book isn't the only thing Vanitas has been lugging around, and when he gets the volume back, he may want to try to lose the baggage.

There are a lot of abrupt scene shifts this week that I don't think does the episode any real favors, but there are also a lot of tantalizing details that are starting to come to light. Chief among them is the fact that both Chloé and Jeanne may have made Faustian bargains that they need to get out of, although Roland's observation that the Church is clearly not being honest with the paladins is another likely important piece of the overall puzzle. The entire series stands at a crossroads, and perhaps the characters ought to hope that it's Hecate rather than Faustina who is waiting for them.

The Case Study of Vanitas Season 2 is currently streaming on Crunchyroll and Funimation .

Luna was sibling of the Queen Faustina Centuries ago there was a conspiracy to prevent a vampire born under the Blue Moon from aspiring to the throne. Vampires have no sympathy for those born in circumstances that are considered to be an "evil omen". Why would it be any different with a member of royalty?

Jeanne is a clone created from the blood of Queen Faustina

  • Luna was the only vampire capable of creating a cure, therefore they were slandered so that the vampires of the Crimson Moon would not trust them.
