Edward Estlin Cummings (1894–1962), known as E. E. Cummings, 2 is one of America’s most famous twentieth-century poets. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he was raised, a pastor’s son, in the Unitarian faith, which emphasizes the oneness of God. As an adult he wed this spiritual framework to Emersonian transcendentalism, a philosophical movement that celebrates humanity and nature. Elements from these two complementary traditions can be detected in his praise poem “i thank You God for most this amazing,” in which the natural world triggers an awakening to Truth. And for Cummings, Truth is a person, a “You” with a capital Y .

Humanities students are always introduced to Cummings as a poet, but actually, painting is the endeavor he invested most of his time in. 3 One of his favorite subjects to paint was the landscape surrounding his summer home at Joy Farm in Silver Lake, New Hampshire (see image above). The elation he felt in this environment of wooded hills, fields, and lake he worked into several of his poems. I wonder if the phrases “leaping greenly spirits of trees” and “blue true dream of sky” were inspired by a view from his farmstead one August day.

Cummings is notorious for his idiosyncratic poetic style, which is marked especially by unconventional syntax—that is, a nonlogical ordering of words. This device is at play in the awkward first line of our present poem, which dislocates “most”: instead of “i thank You God for this most amazing / day” (this day is so amazing) or even “i thank You God most for this amazing / day” (this day is what I’m most thankful for), we have “i thank You God for most this amazing / day.” By inverting the word order, Cummings draws attention to the word “most,” traditionally an adverb but in this position an indeterminate part of speech.

He does this, too, in stanza 3 with “human merely being.” He adds the suffix -ly to the adjective “mere” and places it right in the middle of an open compound so that instead of “mere human being” we have a unique word combination that invites deeper thought. This syntactical shift converts the word “being” from a noun to a verb.

While some literary scholars have criticized the seemingly arbitrary arrangements of words in Cummings’s poems, others have suggested that they encourage fresh perceptions. “The words, the meanings in the words, and also the nebula of meaning and sound and pun around the words, are all put into an enlivening relation to each other,” writes R. P. Blackmur. 4

Cummings also abandoned the rules of spacing, demonstrated here by his closing up the space after each colon and semicolon. Whereas spaces would have visually signaled the end of a phrase, giving the eyes a blank to briefly relax into, Cummings chose instead to run one idea right into the next. This lack of spacing evokes a sense of breathless enthusiasm. In the third stanza he does something similar, except instead of omitting the spaces after punctuation he omits the punctuation itself, in a list that would otherwise have commas: “tasting touching hearing seeing / breathing.”

Another idiosyncrasy in Cummings’s poetry is his division of words across line breaks, as in the “birth / day” of this poem. These two words are typically conjoined in English writing, and the fact that they occur earlier in the line as such (i.e., “birthday”) only calls further attention to them individually.

Birth is a major theme in this poem. “i who have died am alive again,” writes Cummings as himself. He experiences a spiritual awakening, “the birth / day of life and of love and wings.” To me, this line is the most evocative one in the poem. I read into it my own experience of awakening—that is, my conversion to Christianity, my being raised with Christ into new life. This isn’t the same kind of awakening that Cummings is talking about, who, being Unitarian, rejected the divinity of Christ and the literalness of the Resurrection. 5 His born-again experience seems to refer more generally to a sudden, sweeping awareness of the glory of God, a wonder that lifts him up out of either ignorance or depression, as if on wings.

The idea that nature is a revelator of God shows up a lot in Cummings’s oeuvre, but not as overtly as it does in “i thank You God for most this amazing.” In its beauty, its complexity, and its vastness, nature testifies to its Creator. In stanza 3 Cummings expresses incredulity that, given this testimony, any human being should ever doubt God’s existence.

As have all writers who have ever tried to write about God, Cummings struggled with how to articulate who he/she is. I love his one-word descriptor: “yes.” God is yes. This is the most positive, most affirmative word Cummings could find. “Yes” implies “true,” “right,” and is also used to express excitement: Yes! The opposite of God is “the no / of all nothing.” Those who do not live in awe and worship of God live in this state of no—emptiness, meaninglessness, exclusion from blessing.

Cummings’s encounters with divine majesty humbled him, an attitude he expresses here in two ways. First, he lowercases first-person pronouns but capitalizes those referring to God. This stylistic choice visually contrasts the smallness of humanity with the largeness of God—a contrast he also builds with the words “merely” and “illimitably.” Second, he sets off the accounts of his personal awakening in parentheses as if they are just asides, minor addresses to the reader rather than to God. The relegation of these comments to side notes keeps God, the poem’s main subject, elevated.

The final stanza, one of those two asides, uses the phrases “ears of my ears” and “eyes of my eyes,” suggesting a spiritual hearing and seeing, a sense beyond the physical. It is with that sense that we perceive God—not by hearing his physical voice or by seeing his physical body but by opening our inner ears, our inner eyes. For many of us that sense has lain dormant for so long that we need to rouse it awake. (Engaging the arts is a great way to do it!) When we open the depths of our inner being to reality, we will encounter God at the center of it.

“i thank You God for most this amazing” was set to music in 1999 by the American composer Eric Whitacre as part of a larger a cappella choral work titled Three Songs of Faith . The opening musical phrase is my favorite—the chord on “amazing” is, well, amazing! Then the voices leap, like the spirits of trees. They linger on the word “infinite,” stretching it back and forth, as if exploring its bounds. The moments of polyphony (overlapping voices) pay homage to Cummings’s syntax, with its scattered words. In the final stanza the voices climb up on “open,” mimicking spiritual ascent, and repeat the word four times, soaking in its wonder. Whitacre concludes the piece with a repeat of the first line, “i thank You God.”

Although Cummings was no orthodox Christian, he at least viewed God as an imaginative, joyous creator and affirmer of life, someone big and beautiful and worthy of exaltation, as seen in “i thank You God for most this amazing.” Even as the poem praises the transcendence of God—his size and his mystery—it also praises his immanence in nature.

Despite some oddities, this poem is actually one of Cummings’s most intelligible, not nearly as eccentric as his others. Here’s a 1953 audio recording of him reading it:

It’s easy to get preoccupied by our own lack and limitations. Think of how different we’d see our lives by shifting our attention to the goodness and greatness of God.

Taking care of and praying for ourselves is vitally important. But wouldn’t hearing the praises of others expand our worldview and our vision of the Lord?

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble .

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

Grateful Beyond Words: A Letter to My Inspiration

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

A Letter to God: Thank You For Everything You Have Given Me In Life

I know you would be surprised seeing me address you through this letter. Usually you find me in a different set-up where I have a bell and joss sticks in my hand and you sit decorated in the beautiful temple of my house. That set-up is more formal and elaborate. This one is more real and gives me a chance to write my heart out.

You must be wondering why I am writing a letter to you. As if my daily prayers and wishes weren’t enough that I have another wish ready for you. In my daily prayers, I chant, sing for you and express my hopes which I know only you can fulfil. But today I am writing this letter to express my gratitude. Apart from my existence, there are several things in my life that I am grateful for. I have never been that expressive when it came to saying thank you, so today I am taking this opportunity to do the same.

Let me begin my list of thank you from the very start-

1. You have always been very kind. I am born in the most beautiful family. My mom is my source of inspiration; dad my pillar of strength and sister my advisor. They all love me and help me understand my life, which is given by you. Thank you for making me a part of a such a special family.

2. You always helped me overcome my inner fears. As a young girl, I was an anxious student always worrying about each and everything in life. Before every exam I would cry thinking I would fail. But you always helped me give my best. Thank you for letting me reach my full potential and emerge as a confident student.

3. You have always heard my dreams and fulfilled them. Getting into a college of my choice that too for my favourite course, was nothing less than a dream. But it came true! And I got to live my dream in the best possible way. Thank you for letting it happen without many obstacles.

4. You have always made things easy for me. I never thought I would ever fall in love. But I did, that too with the right person. I believed with all the cultural differences we would face a lot of hindrance getting married, but we didn’t. Thank you for keeping things in our stride and making it such a smooth ride.

5. You have always been very generous when it came to fulfil my wishes. So, when I prayed for one little bundle of joy, you blessed me with two. Never in my life I imagined that I would have twins. Thank you for gifting me the two most precious souls in life.

6. You have always shown me the right path. Now when my kids are growing, I find it difficult to maintain my sanity with their growing needs and demands. But even in the most stressful moments, a mere thought of you keeps me sane. Thank you for instilling some sense in me and help me cope with such situations in the best possible way.

7. You have always kept me safe. There have been times when I have been off guard, unprepared for the dreadful situations in life. But I could always feel the invisible shelter that you created to keep me protected. Thank you for keeping me safe and secure.

8. You have always provided me peace. When everything around me turn negative, I gain strength thinking about you. Even a two minute of meditation helps me to come out of all the negative emotions and retain my calm. Thank you for keeping me positive and hopeful even in the toughest of situations.

9. You have always been my silent listener. I never had to shout or cry aloud. You have heard things that I sometimes just whispered in my mind. Thank you for hearing even the most silent prayers of my heart .

10. You have always been there when I needed you. I may not speak to you everyday. I am quite irregular with my prayers. But everytime I look for you, you ensure to make your presence felt. Thank you for not giving up on me.

You must be wondering that my thank you list is not as long, as usually my wish list is. This letter may be short but is straight from my heart. Every time I count my blessings, I find myself fortunate and lucky. Thank you for blessing me always. My faith in you will always remain intact and unshakeable.

In the first lines of this poem, the speaker begins by thanking God for “this amazing / day.” They feel reinvigorated in their appreciation of the natural world and use the fourteen lines of this poem to express that in the form of a prayer. In the first lines of the poem, Cummings used the line that came to be utilized as the title of the poem. The speaker thanks God for “most this amazing / day” and for the “leaping greenly spirits of trees.” They are trying to describe the feelings they’re experiencing when they step out into the natural world and see the light hitting the trees, making it appear as though the tree’s spirits are leaping into the sky.

They continue to describe the world, suggesting that the sky is a “blue true dream.” The world is depicted in an idealized and dream-like way. The trees are green, the sky is blue, and the world is likely. They are looking at the world with what some might describe as a child’s eyes. Everything is full of beauty and wonder. They thank God for the infinite, the “natural,” and the “yes.” The world grows and expands in ways that a single person can’t comprehend. The speaker feels this and is grateful for it.

Stanza Two

(i who have died am alive again today, (…) great happening illimitably earth)

The second stanza is contained within parentheses. The poet refrains from using capitalization or end-punctuation within this stanza. Cummings writes that the speaker is someone who has “died” and is “alive again today, / and this is the sun’s birthday.” They feel reborn today as though their soul has metaphorically died and then been reinvigorated by the world, along with the sun.

The earth is “illimitable,” or limitless. It has no limit to the life that can bloom and flourish on its surface. The speaker maintains their celebratory and appreciative tone in these lines. It is easy to imagine their voice filled with pride and joy for the world in which they get to live.

Stanza Three

how should tasting touching hearing seeing (…) doubt unimaginable You?

The third stanza is the final quatrain of the poem. Here, the poet again addresses God and his power. They asks how God created humanity from nothing, imbuing them with the senses of “tasting touching hearing seeing / breathing.” They are appreciating their senses and marveling at the fact that they exist among human beings at all. Humanity came from nothing and was formed by God’s hand, they say in lines two and three. There’s no way that when one analyzes the existence of human beings, the speaker implies, that doubt could truly exist. But, they also suggest, people do not see the world as the speaker is at this moment and so have nothing to base their faith on. Doubt does creep in.

Stanza Four

(now the ears of my ears awake and now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

The final couplet is contained within parentheses and demonstrates an interesting use of repetition . The poet begins each line with an example of anaphora and describes the speaker’s senses, specifically their ears and eyes. They notes that the “ears of [thier] ears awake” and the “eyes of [their] eyes are opened.”

This somewhat cryptic sounding final image hints at how they are now fully aware of God’s creation and God’s hand around them. The speaker’s spiritual eyes and ears are open, allowing them to use the senses God gave them to see the world clearly.

Themes

Throughout this poem, Cummings engages with a few themes. They include the natural beauty of the world and spirituality. The speaker has had a spiritual rebirth at the beginning of the poem. Now, with newly opened eyes and ears, they are experiencing the world in a new way. This inspires them to thank God for everything he created and for allowing humanity to exist among the “infinite.”

Structure and Form

‘i thank You God for most this amazing’ by E.E. Cummings is a four-stanza poem that is divided into sets of quatrains and one concluding couplet. The poem is written with a simple rhyme scheme of ABAB in the first two stanzas . In the third, the second and fourth lines do not rhyme . In the final quatrain, the poet uses a half-rhyme with the words “and” and “opened.” This type of pattern is unusual within Cummings verse . He is far better known for writing in free verse .

Readers will likely be more familiar with his use, or lack thereof, of capitalization and traditional punctuation. There is only one example of end punctuation within the entire poem (at the end) and only three capitalized words, “You,” “God,” and “You,” again at the end of the poem.

Literary Devices

Throughout this poem, Cummings makes use of several literary devices. These include but are not limited to:

Caesura : occurs when a poet inserts a pause in a line of verse. This could be through the use of punctuation or through a natural pause in the meter . For example, “and this is the sun’s birthday; this is the birth” and “of all nothing—human merely being.”
Alliteration : occurs when the poet repeats the same consonant sound at the beginning of multiple lines. For example, “birthday” and “birth” in line two of the second stanza.
Repetition : occurs when the poet repeats one or more elements of a poem. This could be the structure, an image, a word, a phrase, or more. In this case, the poet demonstrates repetition in the final two lines. He writes: “(now the ears of my ears awake and / now the eyes of my eyes are opened).”
Personification : occurs when the poet imbues something non-human with human characteristics. For example, “for the leaping greenly spirits of trees.”

Cummings wrote this poem to share a speaker ’s heightened opinion of God and creation. They are amazed at the world around them, and within the fourteen lines of this contemporary sonnet , express their love and admiration for God.

The speaker is unknown. They remain nameless throughout the poem. Many will interpret the speaker as Cummings himself. But, without a specific note that these are the same thoughts that Cummings shared, it’s better to consider the speaker as a persona Cummings invented.

The main themes of this poem are the beauty of the natural world and God’s power/creation. The speaker spends the lines thanking God for creating everything they’re now seeing with newly opened eyes. They feel awed by everything around them and completely amazed that they get to live in such a lively and beautiful world.

The tone is appreciative and celebratory. The speaker spends the fourteen lines marveling at God’s creation and their small role. They have newly opened eyes and ears that they’re using to see the green of the trees and the blue of the sky.

It is often described as a prayer because the lines are addressed to God. The speaker spends the poem thanking God for the natural world and the fact that they get to live within it.

Writing a Thank You Letter to God

The concept of writing a thank you letter is familiar to you. But what about writing a thank you letter to God? Have you ever written one?

Well, if you write a thank you letter to God, you don’t have to put it in the mail, send it UPS, or tuck it away in an envelope. 100% guaranteed — He will read it wherever and however you write it!

The Bible is full of instructions to remember the goodness of God. When Jesus healed 10 men with leprosy, only one man came back to say thank you. Jesus wondered why the other 9 didn’t come back to say thank you, and he completely healed the man who did say thanks.

So, take out a piece of paper and begin writing, “Thank you God for…” You can write about God’s attributes, His blessings, the people in your life, the beauty of a sunset or symphony…and the list goes on and on.

You can take a Psalm and turn it into a thanksgiving letter. For instance, here are a few verses from Psalm 34 (v. 4, 7, 8):

I sought the Lord, and He answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.

The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him and rescues them.

O taste and see that the Lord is good; how blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.

Okay, those verses easily turn into a thank you letter like this:

Thank you Lord that when I seek you, you hear me. Thank you for delivering me from my fears. Thank you that you encamp all around me and you rescue me from danger. Thank you for being a good God. Thank you for blessing my life. Thank you that you are my refuge, my place to hide when I need shelter and protection.

How pleasant life becomes when we remember to give thanks to God. Writing Him a thank you letter may be a quick way to change your perspective about the day, and offer the thanks God so richly deserves.

Thanking God for Everything

Ephesians 5:20 says we should be, “…giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Is it possible to give thanks for all things?

To pretend that all things are good would mock God. Murder, cancer, and divorce are not good. So how can we thank God for these things? Because God is good. (See James 1:17; 2 Samuel 22:31.) It’s all right to ask questions, but always assume the goodness of God.

“We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). God is sovereign, and causes all things—bad or good—to work for good , for those who love Him.

Here are seven good things that trouble may bring for you. You can thank God for them:

“For whom the LORD loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives….No chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it” (Hebrews 12:6, 11).

God loves us enough to correct us. King David wrote, “Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Your word” (Psalm 119:67). If trouble brings correction, should you not thank God?

Dependence on God

The Apostle Paul was highly gifted with grace, as well as intellect and influence. Paul’s temptation was to depend on himself.

God blessed Paul with a vision. He was caught up into the third Heaven and saw things not lawful for a man to utter. But then, Paul said, “Lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me…I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (2 Corinthians 12:7-9).

Your greatest strength is God. But when we sail through life without difficulties, we tend not to depend upon Him. Blessings can become a curse unless God allows us to have trouble that brings us to Him. “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). If your anguish causes you to depend upon God, can’t you thank Him for it?

It may be that deep sorrow gives you the greatest testimony.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

God is the source of comfort, God comforts us in all tribulation, and God allows us to comfort others with the same comfort we received from Him.

The Apostle Paul, sitting in a dank, miserable prison, waiting to be executed, said, “But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel” (Philippians 1:12).

Satan once said something like this to God, “The only reason Job serves you is because he has never had trouble.” (Read Job 1:9-11.)

God replied, in effect, “You don’t know my servant, Job. He loves me not because of what I’ve done for him, but because of who I am.” (Read Job 1:12-22.)

If trouble and pain cause you to have a stronger testimony, if trouble is a platform for God’s grace, can’t you thank Him?

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

“…His purpose.” What is God’s plan for you?

Health and wealth? Sorry—no.

Service and usefulness? Yes, God wants that, but that is not His highest plan for you.

“For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son” (Romans 8:29a). God’s plan is to make His children like Christ Jesus. Christ-likeness is maturity.

In difficulty, we learn patience. You won’t be a mature child of God until you learn patience. (See James 1:4.) And the only way to learn patience, or endurance, is to have something to endure.

So if God is using trouble to make you more like Jesus, can’t you thank Him?

Most of us ask, Why me, Lord? The Apostle Peter said, “Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified (1 Peter 4:12-14).

Do you want the Spirit of glory and of God to rest on you? Do you want a fiery trial? Peter says it is the fiery trial that brings the Spirit of glory upon us. If your trouble and pain cause you to know this glory, then for God’s glory, can you not thank Him for it?

Maybe you are thinking, these reasons all sound good, but they don’t fit my case. Here is one that will: mystery . Some things, you will never know. Preachers may never be able to explain it to you. Why?

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9).

“The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law” (Deuteronomy 29:29).

God lets you know enough to obey Him.

Job said, in effect, “God, I wish there were somebody to argue my case to you. I don’t understand!” (Read Job 23:3-5.) But Job still obeyed. Even when Job’s wife said, “Curse God and die!” (Job 2:9), Job said, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?” (Job 10). Ultimately, Job concluded about God, “ Though He slay me , yet will I trust Him” (Job 13:15).

We don’t have to understand all things in order to thank God. Not all things are good, but God is good.

Eternal Victory

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).

Paul is saying in this passage that the glory offsets the suffering. He is not saying that the glory will be just as good as the suffering is bad. He says the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared to the glory.

If these seven things are true—and every one is—then can we not, in everything , give thanks?

Our lives can get overwhelming, daunting, and challenging. We can quickly get discouraged, frustrated, and burned out by circumstances or relationships beyond our control. In those seasons where we feel hopeless and helpless, the best thing we can do is turn away from the challenges and toward the love of God. Saying a thanksgiving prayer is how we make a change in our heart and mind. When we remember that God is in control and our lives are not our own, we remember we have a Savior who gives us strength when we are weak and comforts us in all our times of need.

When we pause to count our blessings, there's no better way to express our gratitude than through a heartfelt prayer of thanksgiving. These prayers do more than just list the good things in our lives; they connect us deeply with God, allowing us to reflect on His abundant generosity.

"Thank You, God" Prayer

Thank you, God, for the life you have blessed me with. Thank you for the opportunities that I have been given and for the strength to make the most of them. Thank you for guiding me through difficult times and for giving me the courage to face whatever comes my way. Most of all, thank you for your unconditional love and support, which has seen me through every challenge and kept me going. You are an ever-present source of comfort and hope, and I am deeply grateful for all that you have done for me.

Lord, thank you for the abundant blessings in my life. You have given me more than I ever dreamed possible and I am so grateful. Giving thanks to God is a great way to honor Him and draw closer to Him. It can be easy to give thanks when something good happens, but it's important to be thankful even when times are difficult—or when you’re just living your daily life! You can give thanks by praying, singing, sharing the Word of God with others, and in lots of other ways. Keep reading to discover the many different ways of honoring God and thanking Him for the blessings he’s given you!

Things You Should Know

Thank God every day! Thank Him for big things, like having a baby, and for everyday, ordinary things, like the beauty of nature.
Honor God by living according to His will, by reading the Bible, and by singing praises.
Spread the Word of the Lord to others, and invite them to praise the Lord with you!

Step 1 Thank God continuously throughout your day.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, the Bible says: "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
A prayer of daily gratitude might sound like this: “Dear God, thank You for this day and for my health and for surrounding me with love and beauty. I am grateful to be alive today and I rejoice that You are watching over me. Amen.”

Step 2 Offer a special prayer of thanks after major blessings.

Major blessings might include things like meeting the love of your life, getting a major promotion, finding out that you're expecting a child, or receiving an unexpected, meaningful gift.
A prayer of thanks after a blessing might be something like: "Heavenly Father, I am so humbled that You have blessed me with the gift of a child. I thank You with my whole heart. Please protect my unborn baby and give me wisdom to be a good parent. Amen."
If you get caught up in the moment and you forget to thank God right when something good happens, it's okay if you pray later when you do think about it. As you keep practicing gratitude, you'll likely find that over time it will become easier to remember God in the moment.

Step 3 Say a quick prayer after small blessings, as well.

Psalms 7:17 says: "I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds."
For instance, if you see one person doing a kind act for another, you might say a short prayer like, "Father, thank You for allowing me to see people showing each other the same love You have for us."

Step 4 Give thanks for God's love even when you can't find another blessing.

In Psalms 118:29, the Bible says: "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, His love endures forever."
If you’re feeling discouraged, you might pray something like, "Dear God, I'm having a hard time today, but I know that You are watching over me. Thank You for Your unconditional, unfailing love, and please help to uplift my spirit. Amen."
Even if things are going well, you can still pray to God to thank Him for loving you.

For instance, if you have been blessed with wealth, you might start a nonprofit organization that serves lunch to kids during the summer when they don't have access to school meals.
If you've been blessed with the ability to be a good listener and a comfort to people who are hurting, you might decide to have a career as a counselor.

For instance, if someone says, "Your home is beautiful," you might say, "Thank you! God has really blessed my life and I'm very grateful to Him."
If they ask you more about your faith in God, you might invite them to come to church with you so they can learn about God's generosity as well.

The Bible is full of examples of God's followers using music to worship him, including David.
Psalms 95:1-3 says: "O Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation. Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods."
You don't have to be the world's best musician to honor God with your song! As long as your praise comes from your heart, that will be good enough.

To live for God, pray and read the Bible each day, turn away from your sins, and listen for His guidance in all of the decisions that you make.

Step 5 Try not to feel proud or entitled about your blessings.

Luke 14:11 says: "For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."
In Proverbs 22:4, the Bible says: "Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life."

Five Reasons to Express Your Thankfulness to God

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!

How often do you come to God with a list of all the things you want Him to do for you or to help you with? He’s a loving Father, and He wants you to come to Him and ask Him for what you want or need. But He also enjoys when you express your gratefulness toward Him.

In Psalm 107:1, the verse for today, and in many other places throughout scripture, we are encouraged to give thanks to the Lord.

How often do you intentionally just step into His presence for the sole purpose of lavishing Him with thanksgiving and praise for who He is and who He created you to be. Our list of reasons to thank God are endless, but sometimes we have difficulty thinking of those reasons to thank Him because the challenges in life seem so big that we can’t see past them to the amazing things God has done for us.

No matter what you’re facing, you can express gratitude to God. Amid your praises and thanksgiving, His joy becomes contagious and He lifts you above your problems so that your focus is on Him.

Here are five reasons to be thankful to God.

God gave you His greatest gift, salvation through relationship with His son (John 3:16).
He answers your prayers (John 11:41).
He provides for your every need (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18).
He showers you with blessings (Philippians 4:6).
He protects and keeps you (Psalm 91).

Today’s One Thing

Choose to spend this day expressing your thanks to God. Choose one of the five reasons to be thankful in the list above and focus on that throughout the day. Share your stories of gratefulness to God with others that come across your path today as well.

Thank You, God

A simple and profound “Thank You” for this gift of sobriety (as defined in SA 191-193)—for in the middle of a daily task, I am struck with simple and utter gratitude for not having acted out for the past nine months. This gift started and continues with living one day at a time, being guided by You, assisted by an understanding sponsor, and participating in the supportive community provided by this fellowship. One day at a time, proportionate to my working of the Twelve Steps, I am being led to “progressive victory over lust.”

The conclusion of your thesis or dissertation shouldn’t take up more than 5–7% of your overall word count.

For a stronger dissertation conclusion , avoid including:

Important evidence or analysis that wasn’t mentioned in the discussion section and results section
Generic concluding phrases (e.g. “In conclusion …”)
Weak statements that undermine your argument (e.g., “There are good points on both sides of this issue.”)

Your conclusion should leave the reader with a strong, decisive impression of your work.

While it may be tempting to present new arguments or evidence in your thesis or disseration conclusion , especially if you have a particularly striking argument you’d like to finish your analysis with, you shouldn’t. Theses and dissertations follow a more formal structure than this.

All your findings and arguments should be presented in the body of the text (more specifically in the discussion section and results section .) The conclusion is meant to summarize and reflect on the evidence and arguments you have already presented, not introduce new ones.

A theoretical framework can sometimes be integrated into a literature review chapter , but it can also be included as its own chapter or section in your dissertation .
