CSS Versions Release Year

CSS comprises style rules that are interpreted by the browser and then applied to the corresponding elements in your document. A style rule set consists of a selector and declaration block.

  • Selector:  A selector in CSS is used to target and select specific HTML elements to apply styles.
  • Declaration:  A declaration in CSS is a combination of a property and its corresponding value.
  • The selector points to the HTML element that you want to style.
  • The declaration block contains one or more declarations separated by semicolons.
  • Each declaration includes a CSS property name and a value, separated by a colon.

CSS declaration always ends with a semicolon, and declaration blocks are surrounded by curly braces. In this example, all paragraph element (<p> tag) will be centre-aligned, with a blue text color.

In our previous articles, we have discussed politics , media , environment , the arts , and morality/values. Today, we will be diving into a popular topic these days, Science and Technology. Given the rate at which technological advancements are taking place, much focus has been shifted to the technological industry, which is why it is important for you to have a good grasp on this theme.

Once again, we will start off by looking at the dictionary definition of Science and Technology. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, science is “knowledge from the careful study of the structure and behaviour of the physical world. Especially by watching, measuring, and doing experiments ”. Science also comprises the development of theories to describe the results of the above-listed activities. On the other hand, technology is defined as “the study and knowledge of the practical , especially industrial, use of scientific discoveries ”. The development of Science and Technology like smart devices, Bluetooth earpieces, and mRNA vaccines have undoubtedly affected our everyday lives, be it in a positive or negative way. With smart devices like smartphones, smart computers, smartwatches, etc., people are able to access the world at the tip of their fingers. In the past, even when phones existed, they were solely for the purpose of contacting others, but today, so much information is stored in a tiny rectangle. On smartphones, users can access the internet, watch movies, edit documents and even play games. With the development of smartwatches, perhaps one day we might not even need a phone anymore. Many smartwatches like the “Apple watch” enable users to text and call others and even have a built-in capability to detect a hard fall and call for help.

The development of mRNA vaccines is considered to be one of the top technological breakthroughs of 2021 . When the Covid-19 pandemic struck, many people were in a state of shock, with societies erupting into chaos due to the sudden fear of getting the virus. Infection rates were high and the daily lives of civilians were disrupted. Hospital intensive care units (ICUs) were overwhelmed and death tolls were skyrocketing. Many countries also saw their economies plunging, especially with the implementation of “lockdowns”. In desperation to provide relief in such a trying time, several scientists at BioTech companies then began experimenting on the idea of mRNA vaccines. mRNA stands for messenger RNA, which is a series of codons coding for certain proteins in the body. With the help of technology, coupled with the scientific theory of genomics and infectious diseases, scientists developed mRNA vaccines. You may also know these vaccines better as “Pfizer” and “Moderna”. Since they are 71% effective in preventing transmission , the introduction of these mRNA vaccines has not only slowed down the transmission rate of the coronavirus but has also resulted in milder symptoms in the case of any coronavirus infection. Such improvements have slowly enabled societies to transition into a new normal that reflects some semblance of life before the virus hit.

Individual (Negative)

Due to the addictive nature of technology, one can easily get hooked on certain games or social media platforms. Marketers and developers have built these platforms to facilitate mindless scrolling; these platforms have a huge addictive potential. Like all other addictions, addiction to technology can result in detrimental effects like depression, anxiety, and social isolation. The addicted individual will often spend a huge amount of time holed up in virtual reality, without any human interaction. An addiction to technology will inevitably drive a wedge between the addicted individual and their family or friends too. This might result in strained relationships as the addicted individual and their loved ones engage in heated arguments or drift apart.

On a societal level, the effects of Science and Technology have an ever greater magnitude. With the development of capital goods like machinery that enables automation or uses Artificial Intelligence (AI), the country can face expanded economic growth. This is because companies will be able to increase efficiency and productivity, whilst cutting down on manpower. When input remains the same and output increases, the country will experience potential economic growth, and the general gross domestic product (GDP) of the country will rise as well.

On the flip side, technological advancements may lead to unemployment for certain individuals, and high unemployment rates will significantly lower the material, as well as non-material standard of living . With no steady flow of income, consumers have lesser purchasing power, and thus, cannot enjoy goods and services at the same levels prior to unemployment. The stress of putting food on the table whilst unemployed will also cause stress levels to rise, resulting in the consumer’s non-material wellbeing taking a dip as well.

Whilst Science and Technology have helped to better the lives of many people, they are definitely not without faults. Technological advancements in automation have replaced many physical labourers, especially in the service and/or manufacturing industry. According to the Straits Times, 20 million jobs in the manufacturing industry could be taken over by machines by 2030! These days, it is also not an uncommon sight to see grocery stores, cafes, or even shopping malls having automated checkouts or robots serving customers. Examples include ‘Ella’, the fully automated coffee-making machine (Fig. 2).

Whilst this helps to save on manpower and costs for the company, service staff like cashiers are outed. Many sunrise industries also require specific technical skills like coding or at least basic technological knowledge. More often than not, labourers do not possess these specific skill sets, making it hard for them to look for new jobs in these up-and-coming companies, resulting in their unemployment. With the seemingly lightning-fast transition to the digital age, many individuals belonging to the older generation are also struggling to keep up . In Singapore, a handful of eateries only accept cashless payment, which requires one to set up credit or debit cards and use internet banking services like “Paynow” and “PayLah!”. Many seniors are unable to make a smooth transition into the digital age due to a difficulty in understanding the latest technology, and the fear of damaging these expensive devices or being scammed. According to research, 24% of seniors were afraid to use new technological devices, and out of this 24%, 43.4% fear damaging the devices or falling prey to malware.

As technology and science become more advanced, researchers are also delving into the quixotic theory of microchipping . Microchipping refers to implanting a chip inside a human or animal, with the chip-making transactions and identification possible. However, whilst microchipping could lead to a new digital era of convenience and medicine, microchip implants could cross ethical boundaries . Firstly, let’s talk about the experimental process of microchipping. In order to ensure that there will not be any adverse human reaction to microchipping, many scientists and researchers turn to the solution of animal testing, which on its own has been a century-old ethical debate. Many are disgusted with the idea of these animals being used as laboratory test subjects, stepping up to fight for the rights of these animals, and there have been many non-governmental organisations like The Human Society and PETA stepping up as well. PETA often posts about the atrocities of animal testing on their Instagram page (Fig 3.); they use their social media platform to reach out to people, as well as publicly condemn such practices. Secondly, microchipping of human beings may lead to an excessive invasion of privacy. Imagine a world where all companies will know the location of their staff all the time, with or without their given permission… That’s not a world we want to live in!

TraceTogether

TraceTogether plays on the function of Bluetooth technology that enables devices to capture proximity data for the Ministry Of Health (MOH) to do “contact tracing”. “Contact tracing” is a practice where the ministry will use said proximity data to identify close contacts of an individual affected with the coronavirus and quarantine these contacts to curb the spread of the virus. However, shortly after the implementation of this system, there was outrage amongst citizens due to privacy concerns. While the initial stance was that all data collected from TraceTogether would strictly be used for contact tracing only, Minister of Home Affairs (MHA) Desmond Tan later mentioned that the data could also be used for “the purpose of criminal investigation” . Following this, TraceTogether’s site had its privacy statement changed to state that the “Criminal Procedure Code applies to all data under Singapore’s jurisdiction”. This sparked quite a big outrage amongst citizens; 80% of those living in Singapore use the system. Users felt that their privacy was compromised with their whereabouts being tracked round the clock.

As we have mentioned earlier in this article, Science and Technology have made microchipping possible. As information and theories become more profound, scientists have started to explore the implantation of chips in the brain. Neuralink , a company founded by Elon Musk in 2016, has plans to implant microchips in the brain in order to treat neural disorders. Whilst this may prove a new age of medicine, the road to success is a long one filled with much experimentation, unfortunately, carried out on monkeys. Throughout the experimental process, 8 monkeys have died , which brings us back to the point of ethical concerns. Technology may have the ability to better the lives of the people (eventually), but at what cost?

China’s face recognition technology

The rise of technology in recent years has enabled homegrown Chinese company “Xiaomi” to develop facial recognition technology . With China’s vast network of surveillance cameras across the country, this facial recognition system logs almost every single citizen going about their daily lives. A database leak in 2019 revealed that China had more than 6.8 million records daily, reflecting the draconian extent to which China monitors its citizens . It is no secret that the Chinese government has also been targeting the Uyghur minority group , being accused of genocide of these people. China has also been accused of using this facial recognition technology to identify the Uyghurs, singling them out for detention and mistreatment.

Science plays an important role in everyday life, and people depend on technologies in a variety of ways by creating, using, and improving them regularly. Sometimes, a person hardly notes how inevitable the impact of science can be on personal or professional life. Evaluating such technologies as the Internet, smartphones, notebooks, smartwatches, and brain-medicine interfaces helps recognize their positive and negative outcomes compared to the period when traditional lifestyles and natural resources like ginger were highly appreciated.

Most people are confident in their independence and neglect multiple technologies that determine their lives. During the last 25 years, technology has dramatically changed human interactions (Muslin, 2020). In addition to domestic technological discoveries like washing machines and stoves, four technologies, namely, the Internet, smartphones, notebooks, and smartwatches, are used throughout the day. Despite their evident advantages in communication, data exchange, and connection, some negative impacts should not be ignored.

Regarding my personal life changes, these technologies provoke mental health changes such as depression. I prefer to avoid my dependence on all these technologies that imperceptibly shape everyday activities. However, I constantly check my vitals, messengers, and calls not to miss something important. On the one hand, this idea of control helps improve my life and makes it logical. On the other hand, I am concerned about such relationships with technologies in my life. Similar negative impacts on society emerge when people prefer to communicate virtually instead of paying attention to reality. Technologies compromise social relationships because individuals are eager to choose something easier that requires less movement or participation, neglecting their unique chances to live a real life. They also challenge even the environment because either smartwatches or notebooks need energy that is associated with air pollution, climate change, and other harmful emissions (Trefil & Hazen, 2016). Modern technologies facilitate human life, but health, social, and environmental outcomes remain dangerous.

Thinking about my day, I cannot imagine another scientific discovery that makes this life possible except the Internet. Today, more devices have become connected to the Internet, including cars, appliances, and personal computers (Thompson, 2016). With time, people get an opportunity to use the Internet for multiple purposes to store their personal information, business documentation, music, and other files that have a meaning in their lives. The Internet defines the quality of human relationships, starting with healthcare data about a child and ending with online photos after the person’s death.

Although the Internet was invented at the end of the 1980s, this technology was implemented for everyday use in the middle of the 1990s. All people admired such possibilities as a connection across the globe, increased job opportunities, regular information flows, a variety of choices, online purchases, and good education opportunities (Olenski, 2018). It was a true belief that the Internet made society free from real-life boundaries and limitations. However, with time, its negative sides were revealed, including decreased face-to-face engagement, laziness, and the promotion of inappropriate content (Olenski, 2018). When people prefer their virtual achievements and progress but forget about real obligations like parenting, education, or keeping a healthy lifestyle, the Internet is no longer a positive scientific discovery but a serious problem.

Many discussions are developed to identify the overall impact of the Internet as a major scientific discovery. Modern people cannot imagine a day without using the Internet for working, educational, or personal purposes. However, when online life becomes someone’s obsession, the negatives prevail over its positives. Therefore, the human factor and real-life preferences should always be recognized and promoted. During the pandemic, the Internet is a priceless contribution that helps deal with isolation and mental health challenges. Some people cannot reach each other because of family issues or business trips, and the Internet is the only reliable and permanent means of connection. Thus, such positives overweight the negatives overall if everything is used rationally.

The Internet makes it possible for healthcare providers to exchange their knowledge and experiences from different parts of the world. This possibility explains the spread of the westernized high-tech research approach to medical treatment and the promotion of science in a multicultural care world. Biomedical research changes the way how people are diagnosed and treated. Recent genomic discoveries help predict the possibility of cancer and human predisposition to other incurable diseases to improve awareness of health conditions. The benefit of new brain-interface technologies (BMI) is life improvement for disabled people to move their prosthetics easily (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016). Instead of staying passive, individuals use smart technology to hold subjects, open doors, and receive calls. BMI has a high price, but its impact is priceless. At the same time, some risks of high-tech research exist in medical treatment. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (2016) underlines damaged neurons and fibers depend on what drugs are delivered to the system and how. The transmission of electrical signals is not always stable, and the safety of BMI processes is hardly guaranteed.

Some populations reject technologies in medical treatment and prefer to use natural resources to stabilize their health. For example, ginger is characterized by several positive clinical applications in China. Researchers believe that this type of alternative medicine effectively manages nausea, vomiting, and dizziness (Anh et al., 2020). Its major advantage is reported by pregnant patients who use ginger to predict morning sickness, unnecessary inflammation, and nausea. However, like any medication, ginger has its adverse effects, covering gastrointestinal and cardiovascular symptoms (Anh et al., 2020). The disadvantage of using traditional medicine is its unpredictable action time. When immediate help is required, herbs and other products are less effective than a specially created drug or injection.

There are many reasons for having multicultural approaches to medical treatment, including ethical recognition, respect, diversity, and improved understanding of health issues. It is not enough to diagnose a patient and choose a care plan. People want to feel support, and if one culture misses some perspectives, another culture improves the situation. Western and traditional cultural approaches may be improved by drawing upon the other. However, this combination diminishes the effects of traditions and the worth of technology in medical treatment. Instead of uniting options, it is better to enhance differences and underline the importance of each approach separately. The challenges of combining these approaches vary from differences in religious beliefs to financial problems. All these controversies between science and culture are necessary for medical treatment because they offer options for people and underline the uniqueness of populations and technological progress.

In general, science and traditions are two integral elements of human life. People strive to make their unique contributions to technology and invent the devices that facilitate human activities. At the same time, they never neglect respect for traditions and cultural diversity. Therefore, high-tech and traditional medicine approaches are commonly discussed and promoted today to identify more positive impacts and reduce negative associations and challenges.

Universities Have a Computer-Science Problem

The case for teaching coders to speak French

Last year, 18 percent of Stanford University seniors graduated with a degree in computer science, more than double the proportion of just a decade earlier. Over the same period at MIT, that rate went up from 23 percent to 42 percent . These increases are common everywhere: The average number of undergraduate CS majors at universities in the U.S. and Canada tripled in the decade after 2005, and it keeps growing . Students’ interest in CS is intellectual—culture moves through computation these days—but it is also professional. Young people hope to access the wealth, power, and influence of the technology sector.

That ambition has created both enormous administrative strain and a competition for prestige. At Washington University in St. Louis, where I serve on the faculty of the Computer Science & Engineering department, each semester brings another set of waitlists for enrollment in CS classes. On many campuses, students may choose to study computer science at any of several different academic outposts, strewn throughout various departments. At MIT, for example, they might get a degree in “Urban Studies and Planning With Computer Science” from the School of Architecture, or one in “Mathematics With Computer Science” from the School of Science, or they might choose from among four CS-related fields within the School of Engineering. This seepage of computing throughout the university has helped address students’ booming interest, but it also serves to bolster their demand.

Another approach has gained in popularity. Universities are consolidating the formal study of CS into a new administrative structure: the college of computing. MIT opened one in 2019. Cornell set one up in 2020. And just last year, UC Berkeley announced that its own would be that university’s first new college in more than half a century. The importance of this trend—its significance for the practice of education, and also of technology—must not be overlooked. Universities are conservative institutions, steeped in tradition. When they elevate computing to the status of a college, with departments and a budget, they are declaring it a higher-order domain of knowledge and practice, akin to law or engineering. That decision will inform a fundamental question: whether computing ought to be seen as a superfield that lords over all others, or just a servant of other domains, subordinated to their interests and control. This is, by no happenstance, also the basic question about computing in our society writ large.

When I was an undergraduate at the University of Southern California in the 1990s, students interested in computer science could choose between two different majors: one offered by the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, and one from the School of Engineering. The two degrees were similar, but many students picked the latter because it didn’t require three semesters’ worth of study of a (human) language, such as French. I chose the former, because I like French.

An American university is organized like this, into divisions that are sometimes called colleges , and sometimes schools . These typically enjoy a good deal of independence to define their courses of study and requirements as well as research practices for their constituent disciplines. Included in this purview: whether a CS student really needs to learn French.

The positioning of computer science at USC was not uncommon at the time. The first academic departments of CS had arisen in the early 1960s, and they typically evolved in one of two ways: as an offshoot of electrical engineering (where transistors got their start), housed in a college of engineering; or as an offshoot of mathematics (where formal logic lived), housed in a college of the arts and sciences. At some universities, including USC, CS found its way into both places at once.

The contexts in which CS matured had an impact on its nature, values, and aspirations. Engineering schools are traditionally the venue for a family of professional disciplines, regulated with licensure requirements for practice. Civil engineers, mechanical engineers, nuclear engineers, and others are tasked to build infrastructure that humankind relies on, and they are expected to solve problems. The liberal-arts field of mathematics, by contrast, is concerned with theory and abstraction. The relationship between the theoretical computer scientists in mathematics and the applied ones in engineers is a little like the relationship between biologists and doctors, or physicists and bridge builders. Keeping applied and pure versions of a discipline separate allows each to focus on its expertise, but limits the degree to which one can learn from the other.

By the time I arrived at USC, some universities had already started down a different path. In 1988, Carnegie Mellon University created what it says was one of the first dedicated schools of computer science. Georgia Institute of Technology followed two years later. “Computing was going to be a big deal,” says Charles Isbell, a former dean of Georgia Tech’s college of computing and now the provost at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Emancipating the field from its prior home within the college of engineering gave it room to grow, he told me. Within a decade, Georgia Tech had used this structure to establish new research and teaching efforts in computer graphics, human-computer interaction, and robotics. (I spent 17 years on the faculty there, working for Isbell and his predecessors, and teaching computational media.)

Kavita Bala, Cornell University’s dean of computing, told me that the autonomy and scale of a college allows her to avoid jockeying for influence and resources. MIT’s computing dean, Daniel Huttenlocher, says that the speed at which computing evolves justifies the new structure.

But the computing industry isn’t just fast-moving. It’s also reckless. Technology tycoons say they need space for growth, and warn that too much oversight will stifle innovation. Yet we might all be better off, in certain ways, if their ambitions were held back even just a little. Instead of operating with a deep understanding or respect for law, policy, justice, health, or cohesion, tech firms tend to do whatever they want . Facebook sought growth at all costs, even if its take on connecting people tore society apart . If colleges of computing serve to isolate young, future tech professionals from any classrooms where they might imbibe another school’s culture and values—engineering’s studied prudence, for example, or the humanities’ focus on deliberation—this tendency might only worsen.

When I raised this concern with Isbell, he said that the same reasoning could apply to any influential discipline, including medicine and business. He’s probably right, but that’s cold comfort. The mere fact that universities allow some other powerful fiefdoms to exist doesn’t make computing’s centralization less concerning. Isbell admitted that setting up colleges of computing “absolutely runs the risk” of empowering a generation of professionals who may already be disengaged from consequences to train the next one in their image. Inside a computing college, there may be fewer critics around who can slow down bad ideas. Disengagement might redouble. But he said that dedicated colleges could also have the opposite effect. A traditional CS department in a school of engineering would be populated entirely by computer scientists, while the faculty for a college of computing like the one he led at Georgia Tech might also house lawyers, ethnographers, psychologists, and even philosophers like me. Huttenlocher repeatedly emphasized that the role of the computing college is to foster collaboration between CS and other disciplines across the university. Bala told me that her college was established not to teach CS on its own but to incorporate policy, law, sociology, and other fields into its practice. “I think there are no downsides,” she said.

Mark Guzdial is a former faculty member in Georgia Tech’s computing college, and he now teaches computer science in the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering. At Michigan, CS wasn’t always housed in engineering—Guzdial says it started out inside the philosophy department, as part of the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. Now that college “wants it back,” as one administrator told Guzdial. Having been asked to start a program that teaches computing to liberal-arts students, Guzdial has a new perspective on these administrative structures. He learned that Michigan’s Computer Science and Engineering program and its faculty are “despised” by their counterparts in the humanities and social sciences. “They’re seen as arrogant, narrowly focused on machines rather than people, and unwilling to meet other programs’ needs,” he told me. “I had faculty refuse to talk to me because I was from CSE.”

In other words, there may be downsides just to placing CS within an engineering school, let alone making it an independent college. Left entirely to themselves, computer scientists can forget that computers are supposed to be tools that help people. Georgia Tech’s College of Computing worked “because the culture was always outward-looking. We sought to use computing to solve others’ problems,” Guzdial said. But that may have been a momentary success. Now, at Michigan, he is trying to rebuild computing education from scratch, for students in fields such as French and sociology. He wants them to understand it as a means of self-expression or achieving justice—and not just a way of making software, or money.

Early in my undergraduate career, I decided to abandon CS as a major. Even as an undergraduate, I already had a side job in what would become the internet industry, and computer science, as an academic field, felt theoretical and unnecessary. Reasoning that I could easily get a job as a computer professional no matter what it said on my degree, I decided to study other things while I had the chance.

I have a strong memory of processing the paperwork to drop my computer-science major in college, in favor of philosophy. I walked down a quiet, blue-tiled hallway of the engineering building. All the faculty doors were closed, although the click-click of mechanical keyboards could be heard behind many of them. I knocked on my adviser’s door; she opened it, silently signed my paperwork without inviting me in, and closed the door again. The keyboard tapping resumed.

The whole experience was a product of its time, when computer science was a field composed of oddball characters, working by themselves, and largely disconnected from what was happening in the world at large. Almost 30 years later, their projects have turned into the infrastructure of our daily lives. Want to find a job? That’s LinkedIn. Keep in touch? Gmail, or Instagram. Get news? A website like this one, we hope, but perhaps TikTok. My university uses a software service sold by a tech company to run its courses. Some things have been made easier with computing. Others have been changed to serve another end, like scaling up an online business.

The struggle to figure out the best organizational structure for computing education is, in a way, a microcosm of the struggle under way in the computing sector at large. For decades, computers were tools used to accomplish tasks better and more efficiently. Then computing became the way we work and live. It became our culture, and we began doing what computers made possible, rather than using computers to solve problems defined outside their purview. Tech moguls became famous, wealthy, and powerful. So did CS academics (relatively speaking). If computing colleges have erred, it may be in failing to exert their power with even greater zeal. For all their talk of growth and expansion within academia, the computing deans’ ambitions seem remarkably modest. Martial Hebert, the dean of Carnegie Mellon’s computing school, almost sounded like he was talking about the liberal arts when he told me that CS is “a rich tapestry of disciplines” that “goes far beyond computers and coding.” But the seven departments in his school correspond to the traditional, core aspects of computing plus computational biology. They do not include history, for example, or finance. Bala and Isbell talked about incorporating law, policy, and psychology into their programs of study, but only in the form of hiring individual professors into more traditional CS divisions. None of the deans I spoke with aspires to launch, say, a department of art within their college of computing, or one of politics, sociology, or film. Their vision does not reflect the idea that computing can or should be a superordinate realm of scholarship, on the order of the arts or engineering. Rather, they are proceeding as though it were a technical school for producing a certain variety of very well-paid professionals. A computing college deserving of the name wouldn’t just provide deeper coursework in CS and its closely adjacent fields; it would expand and reinvent other, seemingly remote disciplines for the age of computation.

Near the end of our conversation, Isbell mentioned the engineering fallacy, which he summarized like this: Someone asks you to solve a problem, and you solve it without asking if it’s a problem worth solving. I used to think computing education might be stuck in a nesting-doll version of the engineer’s fallacy, in which CS departments have been asked to train more software engineers without considering whether more software engineers are really what the world needs.
