This class was something I completely didn’t expect, in my mind I thought that this class would be another stressful class that I wouldn’t even enjoy. However, the professor, Adam Dubrow, changed all of that. His way of teaching was very unique and interesting, he made sure everyone understood what he was teaching and always asked if any one had any questions. He really simplified everything for us which made it easy for me to get my work done. He specifically told us what he wanted on all of his assignments and all we had to do was follow directions. Overall, I believe I learned a lot more in this class than in any other writing class I took before because he always had a way of keeping everyone’s attention in class, something some professors can’t accomplish.

One important tool that our professor taught us was learning how use CCNY’s Online Library, through this library we were able to access many different databases that would help us write our papers. This tool was very useful because we had to find many scholarly resources through these data bases and we knew that they were reliable and had been peer reviewed by others. With this in had we only had to do research in one specific place and with the search bar we were able to narrow down the articles that we needed to use for our projects. I was able to find good sources for all my assignments and it made it very easy because they had exactly what I was looking for. After using it this whole semester I know that I will be using it for my future assignments since I know that information provided will be scholarly and very valuable.

Collaborating with my classmates was a vital part for one of our projects which was the group proposal project. I had to make sure that my whole group was responsible and held accountable for their own specific part. We all had to help one another and make sure that our project got done on time. Unfortunately, I did experience a team member who didn’t show up to class and didn’t bother to help either. Therefore, we had to continue without him and proceed in finishing up. The good thing is that my other team members were very supportive and we all revised each other’s work. We all made sure the graphs were correct, we had a very strong writer in our group so he helped us make sure that our punctuation and grammar was correct. I helped others make sure that the information we gathered was correct and that we weren’t missing anything. As well as being accountable for the appendix and the wrapping up our presentation, everyone did their part and it all worked out fine in the end.

Surprisingly enough, the textbook that was required for class did helped a lot especially when I had any questions or ways to format my assignment. The textbook provided a lot of examples and information that helped me come up with many ideas whenever I got stuck on a assignment. Even when I wasn’t puzzled, I still saw myself going back and reading the book because it was still a good tool. For example, it gave many different ways of writing a resume which I found helpful because it helped me improve my own personal essay that I use to apply for jobs. It gave many different formatting options which provided the correct way of writing a resume. I also saw myself learning about the APA style we had to use when writing all of our papers, it provided great examples of how to cite your sources in many different scenarios. Now i’m familiar with MLA, APA, and Chicago style, when before I only knew one.

For our lab report and Technical description we had to combine and use many scholarly resources form the CCNY’s Online library. This was another time we had to use this site to look for information and research. For my technical description I was able to find two great sources that detailed every component inside a computer which made it so much easier with writing my paper. I got all the information that I needed from two sources which worked hand in hand with one another, it was just perfect. For the lab report, I found an article that provided an interesting concept which helped me come up with my thesis. The information that they provided was very sophisticated and it made it easy for the reader to understand. It just took a bit of research to find these articles but once you find really good ones it’s makes it easy to structure the paper.

Some important concepts that our professor taught us was A and P, audience and purpose. This was the foundation for every assignment that we wrote because we had to clearly know who our audience was and state our purpose. Knowing the A and P helped us know what information was important to include and which one wasn’t. RFP, request for proposal was another concept we learned during our group project. One thing I did enjoy learning was how to use commas, colons,  and semicolons because the way he though use these punctuation marks was very interesting. He always made it easier for us to remember when these punctuation marks had to be used. The professor posted everything on blackboard so we always knew what was coming next and what to expect, which was a big part of the course. He even provided a study guide for the quest which was really helpful since it gave me a better idea of how the test was going to be structured. All the information and assignments was available on blackboard.

I have to say that Adam Bubrow was one of the best teacher I had so far, the way he entertained the class, the way he showed interest in teaching the class was great. He’s definitely one of those teachers that I learned a lot from. Therefore, I’ll remember and use all the tools that he provided us to use in the real world. I appreciated the way he kept everything serious with us and showed us what to expect once we graduate. I’m sure everyone who took this class really enjoyed learning from the professor because he always found a way to engage the audience. I just hope that there are more great teacher in my upcoming years of college.

The purpose of experiential reflection is to evaluate theories or disciplinary-based analytical models based on your introspective assessment of the relationship between hypothetical thinking and practical reality; it offers a way to consider how your own knowledge and skills fit within professional practice. This type of writing also provides an opportunity to evaluate your decisions and actions, as well as how you managed your subsequent successes and failures, within a specific theoretical framework. At first glance, academic and reflection can sound like contradictory concepts. Writing an academic reflection essay often involves striking a balance between a traditional, academic paper and a reflective essay. In order to find this balance, consider the terms that encompass the title of the assignment

The term “academic” suggests that the writer will be expected to observe conventions for academic writing, such as using a professional tone and crafting a thesis statement. On the other hand, the term “reflection” implies that the writer should critically reflect on their work, project, or writing process, depending on the assignment, and draw conclusions based on these observations.

In general, an academic reflection essay is a combination of these two ideas: writers should observe conventions for academic writing while critically reflecting on their experience or project. Note that the term “critically” suggests that the writing should not merely tell the reader what happened, what you did, or what you learned. Critical reflection takes the writing one step further and entails making an evaluative claim about the experience or project under discussion. Beyond telling readers what happened, critical reflection tends to discuss why it matters and how it contributed to the effectiveness of the project.

Striking the proper balance between critical reflection and academic essay is always determined by the demands of the particular writing situation, so writers should first consider their purpose for writing, their audience, and the project guidelines. While the subject matter of academic reflections is not always “academic,” the writer will usually still be expected to adapt their arguments and points to academic conventions for thesis statements, evidence, organization, style, and formatting.

Several strategies for crafting an academic reflection essay are outlined below based on three important areas: focus, evidence, and organization.

A thesis statement for an academic reflection essay is often an evaluative claim about your experiences with a process or assignment. Several strategies to consider for a thesis statement in an academic reflection essay include:

  • Being Critical: It is important to ensure that the evaluative claim does not simply state the obvious, such as that you completed the assignment, or that you did or did not like it. Instead, make a critical claim about whether or not the project was effective in fulfilling its purpose, or whether the project raised new questions for you to consider and somehow changed your perspective on your topic.
  • Placement: For some academic reflection essays, the thesis may not come in the introduction but at the end of the paper, once the writer has fully explained their experiences with the project. Think about where the placement of your thesis will be most effective based on your ideas and how your claim relates to them.

Consider the following example of a thesis statement in an academic reflection essay:

By changing my medium from a picture to a pop song, my message that domestic violence disproportionately affects women was more effectively communicated to an audience of my classmates because they found the message to be more memorable when it was accompanied by music.

This thesis makes a critical evaluative claim (that the change of medium was effective) about the project, and is thus a strong thesis for an academic reflection paper.

Evidence for academic reflection essays may include outside sources, but writers are also asked to support their claims by including observations from their own experience. Writers might effectively support their claims by considering the following strategies:

  • Incorporating examples: What examples might help support the claims that you make? How might you expand on your points using these examples, and how might you develop this evidence in relation to your thesis?
  • Personal anecdotes or observations: How might you choose relevant personal anecdotes/observations to illustrate your points and support your thesis?
  • Logical explanations: How might you explain the logic behind a specific point you are making in order to make it more credible to readers?

Consider the following example for incorporating evidence in an academic reflection essay:

Claim: Changing the medium for my project from a picture to a pop song appealed to my audience of fellow classmates.

Evidence: When I performed my pop song remediation for my classmates, they paid attention to me and said that the message, once transformed into song lyrics, was very catchy and memorable. By the end of the presentation, some of them were even singing along.

In this example, the claim (that the change of medium was effective in appealing to the new audience of fellow classmates) is supported because the writer reveals their observation of the audience’s reaction. Organization

For academic reflection essays, the organizational structure may differ from traditional academic or narrative essays because you are reflecting on your own experiences or observations. Consider the following organizational structures for academic reflection essays:

  • Chronological Progression: The progression of points will reflect the order of events/insights as they occurred temporally in the project.

Sample Chronological Organization for a Remediation Reflection:

Paragraph 1: Beginning of the project

Paragraph 2: Progression of the remediation process

Remember that while these strategies are intended to help you approach an academic reflection paper with confidence, they are not meant to be prescriptive. Academic reflection essays are often unique to the writer because they ask the writer to consider their observations or reactions to an experience or project. You have distinctive ideas and observations to discuss, so it is likely that your paper will reflect this distinctiveness. Inviting End-of-Semester Student Reflection

Reflection is widely recognized as an essential practice for learning, metacognition, and personal growth in higher education. Reflection can be integrated in our teaching anytime, but an end-of-semester reflection can be especially powerful: to help students appreciate their growth over time, to bring a meaningful conclusion to a course, and to empower students to take ownership of their learning within and beyond our courses. Student reflection can also be a valuable way to inform faculty reflection on our teaching. 

Reflective questions to ask our students 

Below are some examples of categories of reflection and reflective questions you can draw from and tailor to your teaching context to guide student reflection as the semester draws to a close. 

  • Reflections on big ideas of the course  
  • What did you learn in this course? Discuss three of the biggest ideas from the course. 
  • What was meaningful to you about what you learned?  
  • What do you want to be sure to remember from this course 10 years from now? 

Reflections on your learning journey 

  • How did ideas build on each other over the course of the semester? 
  • What was the most significant idea or moment of learning you want to remember? 
  • How did you experience the process of learning during this class? Discuss one high point in your learning and one challenging moment (which might be the same).

Inviting reflections on the course  

  • In addition to self-reflection, you might want to invite reflection and constructive feedback on the course, for the benefit of future students and your teaching practice. In inviting student feedback, you can gather useful information on topics that may not be included in the Faculty Course Questionnaires (FCQs) such as on specific readings or assignments. You can also take advantage of this opportunity to coach students in how to give helpful feedback in advance of FCQs.

How to invite student reflection 

You can use any of a variety of methods to invite end-of-semester reflection on the questions above. For examples, you might ask students to discuss questions in small groups; to complete a guided reflection using a survey (e.g. Google or Microsoft Forms); to write a journal post, reflective essay, or letter to future students; or to create a “ learning journey map, ” podcast, video, or even an e-portfolio. End-of-semester reflection is especially insightful when contrasted with earlier reflections (such as early semester or midterm reflection).   If you’d like support in integrating student reflection in your course(s), please connect with us. E238 Reflection Essay Assignment Example

This short essay assignment is similar to the text analysis assignment, but differs from it in that there are only four essays throughout the semester (and revisions) and it emphasizes interpretation much more.

Over the course of the semester, you’ll be expected to turn in four well-written reflection essays. Each of these essay will account for 15% of your semester grade (all four together determine 60% of your semester grade). The purpose of the reflection essays is to further your exploration of the assigned texts.

Try to show me that you have read the texts critically and thought deeply about what you have read. Focus on interpreting a specific aspect of the text rather than skimming the surface or giving general comments or opinions. A good starting point is to briefly identify how the work impacted you, then move on to a critical approach, theme, or analysis of basic elements (such as looking at how the text’s point of view, setting, voice, or other element influences the way you interpret the text). Develop the heck out of one interesting idea. The best essays are those that strive to discover something significant that the casual reader would not have noticed, and then support and explore effectively with quotes from the text.

General guidelines:

1) There will be six opportunities during the semester to write a reflection essay. The only essay I’m requiring everyone to write is the first one on short stories. After that, you’ll get to pick and choose which texts you respond to, as long as you complete four essays on time.

2) Reflection essays are due on or before the due date given on the syllabus . Essays turned in after that due date will not receive full credit. The later they are, the more points they’ll lose.

3) Essays will be graded on a ten point scale (i.e.: 10 = A+, 9 = A-, 8 = B-, etc...). In grading these, I consider “8” to be the grade for doing a good job and fulfilling assignment expectations . In order to earn a grade higher than an “8” you must exceed assignment expectations. A grade lower than an “8” means your reflection essay didn’t fulfill assignment expectations, or it was late. Consider putting more thought and care into your reflection essay, developing your points further, including more textual support, and revising your writing more before turning it in.

Please don’t hesitate to schedule a conference with me, or go to the Writing Center (Eddy 6) if you’re having difficulty writing the reflection essays.

4) You will have the opportunity to rewrite/replace one reflection essay. Rewrites are due two weeks after your reflection essay is handed back to you. I have higher expectations for rewrites. To replace an essay, simply turn in an additional essay on one of the other books (note: this must be submitted on time).

5) The topic and approach of your reflection essay is up to you. You’ll find suggestions and examples of the type of essay I’m expecting you to write on pages 1768-1797 of The Story and Its Writer (I highly recommend reading these examples if you wish to do well on this assignment) . Reflection Essays can be explication, analysis, or compare and contrast, as long as they’re interpreting some aspect of the assigned reading that you find interesting and significant. Your essay should shed light on what the story means and support all ideas with quotes from the text. I’ll try to give you ideas of different things you could write about in lecture, and class discussion will be another good source for ideas.

Assignment Expectations:

—Essays must be typed. Double-spaced. 12 point font. Around 2 pages (no more than 2.5 pages!) Revise several times to make your essay concise and brilliant.

—The reflection essays must interpret the text, rather than merely summarizing the text or giving unsupported opinions.

—You must support ideas with quotes from the text. Give a close textual analysis of complex quotes to show how you’re interpreting them. A good reflection essay will include at least three quotes (or more, depending upon how you’re using the quotes). Outside research is not required, but you may use it if you wish. I recommend keeping a narrow focus in your essay so you can support things adequately.

—Pay attention to grammar, punctuation, style, clarity, and spelling. Since the essays are short, I expect them to be very well-crafted and well-revised pieces of writing.

My Reflection on the Fall Semester

With finals week quickly approaching and many of us home until January, the semester is coming to a rapid close. This was arguably one of the most difficult semesters for college students across the country, especially for freshman/first-year students, who have had to adjust under such unprecedented circumstances. This is my reflection on my first semester of college, during a global pandemic.

First, I would like to point out the great effort from Cabrini University by both employees and students to keep everyone safe and make sure we could all stay on campus.  The University's mitigation measures proved to work, as we had under 45 cases since the reopening in August to Thanksgiving break at the end of November.

One way that I grew as a person was through classes. I experienced disciplines that I had never studied before that have changed my view of the world. This is what I like so much about the holistic learning approach and the “Education of the Heart” put forth by Cabrini, you can learn so much about subjects that have almost nothing to do with your major, and it makes you appreciate studies that you would never have thought to learn about.  My philosophy class, most notably, taught by Dr. Cimakaskey, has taught me so much about the world and about the way people subconsciously think and react to situations based on their experiences. These lessons helped me realize more about the people around me and myself, which was valuable at this point in my life.

One other way that I experienced personal growth was through making friends with so many diverse backgrounds. Many of my close friends at Cabrini are from many different states. I find it so amazing that we all have such different backgrounds but came together as a Cabrini community to become lifelong friends. It’s crazy to see the people you meet along your journey and how close you can become after a short period of time. I have learned about differences we all have (such as having to teach my out of state friends that it’s definitely a hoagie, not a sub) and that these differences are what makes college so beautiful. Everyone has a story to tell, and everyone has experienced life differently. When you listen to people's stories about life, it makes you view the world more holistically—this inspired personal growth for me.

Most importantly, I learned that you can never predict what life will throw at you. I’ve learned that it’s not always fun. There will be days where you are studying in your room at 2 am, stressed because you have three exams the next day, and there are times when you find the value of being by yourself. My first semester of college has taught me that there are so many great things about college, but if it doesn’t go exactly as you planned, that’s okay too. There are always new people to meet, new experiences to have, and new memories to make when you least expect it.

My first semester of college has been a learning experience for me, and I find that to be very valuable. I am so thankful for the friends Cabrini has given me the lessons I have learned, and the lifelong connections I have made. Reflective Writing

“Reflection is a mode of inquiry: a deliberate way of systematically recalling writing experiences to reframe the current writing situation. Reflective writing assignments are common across the university. You may be asked to reflect on your learning, your writing, your personal experiences in relation to a theory or text, or your personal experiences in an internship or other type of experience in relation to course readings. These are assignments, as Kara Taczak notes, that offer opportunities to solidify knowledge about our experiences and how they might relate to others’ experiences and existing research. Moreso, reflection can lead to more informed understandings of our own experiences and course content in ways that may make that knowledge more useful in future classes and practice. However, often  reflective writing  is not taught as an explicit writing skill and can be problematically treated as a less rigorous form of writing. Below are some broad writing tips that can help not only your reflective writing to be stronger, but also the reflective inquiry to be more meaningful.

Collect relevant evidence before you start writing.

Yes–we recommend using  evidence  in reflective writing! When connecting personal experiences to the readings, that means selecting quotes from the readings and then coming up with specific moments in your life that relate to those quotes. When reflecting on learning or growth, that might mean locating evidence (quotes) from your previous papers that showcase growth.

Be specific.

It’s really easy to see reflective writing as more informal or casual, and thus, as requiring less attention to details; however, strong reflective writing is very precise and specific. Some examples of statements that are too vague and meaningless include, “I learned a lot about writing this semester.” Or, “I feel like my experiences are exactly as Author B says in this quote.” Neither of these statements tells us much–they are a bit devoid of content. Instead, try to name exactly what you learned about writing or exactly how your experiences are related to the quote. For example, you might reflect, “At the beginning of the semester, unsure of how to summarize a text well, I was just describing the main the idea of the text. However, after learning about Harris’ concept of capturing a writer’s “project,” I believe I have become better at really explaining a text as a whole. Specifically, in my last essay, I was able to provide a fully developed explanation of Author A’s argument and purpose for the essay as well as their materials and methods (that is, how they made the argument). For example, in this quote from my last essay,...”

Focus on a small moment from your experiences.

It’s hard to not want to recap our entire childhood or the full summer before something happened for context when sharing a personal story. However, it’s usually more effective to select a very specific moment in time and try to accurately describe what happened, who was involved, and how it made you feel and react. When writing about a moment, try to place readers there with you–help readers to understand what happened, who was involved, where it happened, why it happened, and what the results were. If this is a more creative assignment, you might even include some sensory descriptions to make the moment more of an experience for readers.

Fully explain the quote or focus of each point.

In reflective writing, you are usually asked to share your experiences in relation to something–a perspective in a text, learning about writing, the first-year experience, a summer internship, etc. When introducing this focal point, make sure you fully explain it. That is, explain what you think the quote means and provide a little summary for context. Or, if you’re reflecting on writing skills learned, before you jump to your learning and growth, stop to explain how you understand the writing skill itself–”what is analysis?,” for example. Usually, you want to fully explain the focus, explain your personal experiences with it, and then return to the significance of your experiences.

Use “I” when appropriate.

Often, in high schools, students are taught to abandon the first-person subject altogether in order to avoid over-use. However, reflective writing requires some use of “I.” You can’t talk about your experiences without using “I”! That being said, we’ve saved this advice for the bottom of the list because, as we hope the above tips suggest, there are a lot of important things that likely need explaining in addition to your personal experiences. That means you want to use “I” when appropriate, balancing your use of “I” with your explanation of the theory, quote, or situation you were in, for example.

Reflection conclusions can look forward to the future.

In the conclusion, you may want to ask and answer questions like:

  • What is the significance of my experiences with X?
  • What did I learn from reflecting on my experiences with Y?
  • How might this reflective work inform future decisions?
  • What specific tools or strategies did this activity use that might be employed in the future? When and why?

Write the reflection introduction last.

We always recommend writing introductions after you’ve drafted your entire essay–this allows you to actually introduce the specific essay you’ve already written (it’s easier to do and more likely to be strong). Reflective introductions have a little bit more flexibility. You do want to introduce the focus of your essay right away–and you might do that by naming it, by sharing a related anecdote, by naming a previously held idea/belief that has changed through learning happening during this course, or by explaining a reading or class discussion that make you curious about the focus you selected.

Final Reflective Essay

At the beginning of the course, I was new to college writing. My writing skills were not bad, but they needed some fine tuning. A lot of the skills I have translated over easily from high school, but some did not. I was always good at getting information and laying down a foundation. Alongside that, I’ve always found writing easy once I have that base. Filling out the main ideas were simple. However, once I arrived in college it was apparent to myself that I needed more detail, and that it was something I lacked. It needed improving, but it was not a hard fix. Sometimes it is hard for me to understand why some writing needs more detail but others do not. This class has helped me fix that issue a bit, while also strengthening my proficiency in other areas. Throughout the semester, I have completed assignments that have increased my skills, and broadened my sense as a writer in different areas. By taking this class, I have been able to develop rhetorical knowledge, develop critical thinking, reading, and information literacy, develop effective strategies for drafting texts, and develop knowledge of conventions.

This class has helped me develop rhetorical knowledge by analyzing and composing multiple forms of writing to understand how genre conventions shape readers’ and writers’ practices and purposes. This means that I have been able to analyze different types of writing in order to understand how a genre affects how an author writes, and how the reader reads. One assignment that comes to mind that helped me achieve this outcome was our advertisement analysis assignments. In class, we spent time looking at different advertisements, and how they appealed to certain audiences. We all had to bring an advertisement to class, and analyze it ourselves, pointing out what techniques the ads were using, if they were effective or not, and who were they targeting. This assignment helps develop rhetoric as it allowed me to understand how the category of advertisement writing can differ from not only other genres, but other ads as well.

Rhetoric knowledge was also developed by practicing purposeful shifts in structure, content, diction, tone, formality, design, and/or medium in accordance with the rhetorical situation, which means to be able to change your writing to reflect the rhetorical situation at hand. This was not the result of one assignment, but many. During the course we were asked to write different essays that reflected different styles of writing. From storytelling and analyzation, to infographics and research assignments, I have been able to change how I write in order to meet the requirements. For example, in the literacy narrative, I had to write to convey a story. This means using traditional elements of a story, such as a beginning, middle, climax, and resolution, along with elements such as foreshadowing. This style of writing is different from an image analysis essay, where the purpose is mostly informative rather than anecdotal. In this case, elements such as facts, context, and comparison are common, and story like elements would not be appropriate here. I display that I have met this outcome by understanding how to write in those genres and how to keep it appropriate.

Another outcome this class has helped me meet is developing critical thinking, reading, and information literacy by composing and reading for inquiry, learning, critical thinking, and communicating. One such way I have met this outcome is by writing journals almost every class about different things. Every so often we had to write a journal about our thoughts about either our writing skills, how we defined different terms, and our reflections on our assignments. By completing these journals, I was able to look back on certain assignments, and learn how I was able to accomplish what I did. This style of writing is helpful because of its creative nature, and allows myself to become better as a writer.

Two more ways I was able to develop my critical thinking, reading, and information literacy skills was by using outside materials in their own writing through techniques such as interpretation, synthesis, response, critique, and design/redesign, and incorporating outside materials through quotations, paraphrase, and summary. By completing the image analysis essay, I was able to meet the outcome about using outside materials in your own writing. I used two advertisements in the essay, and analyzed how they were done, and who they targeted, in order to compare and contrast them at the end. I appropriately commented on their effectiveness, and how they could have improved. Speaking of using outside materials, my research essay demonstrated the outcome related to using paraphrase due to the nature of the assignment. By using outside sources, I was able to make my argument stronger, and I was able to improve as a writer because my skill to read and take information away improved.

The third outcome this class helped me to achieve was to develop effective strategies for drafting texts by working through multiple drafts of a project and recognizing the role of reflecting, revising, and editing in the process, engaging in the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes, such as learning to give and to act on productive feedback to works in progress, both by and with peers and in one-on-one instructor conferences, and critically reflecting on how they may further develop and apply writing skills in the future. The first outcome was reached simply through the rough drafts of each project. I usually had to brainstorm first, but afterwards, I was able to just write in order to get the information down. It had quite a few flaws to begin with, but during editing, most of them were ironed out easily. The second outcome was achieved through peer review. This was something I had always struggled with because I did not know how to do it. After learning, I saw how important it was. It allowed me to see mistakes my brain would have never saw, and let me see what my most common mistake were, which then allowed me to know what to avoid when writing. By reviewing other’s works, I was able to see common writing errors in general, and thus gave me information about what to avoid. The last outcome was achieved through peer review reflection. This is self-explanatory, but being able to reflect on the advice given is helpful. Mostly because it allows you to take a step back, and go over everything. You can see what you did well, and what you need to avoid in the future. This way, in future endeavors, the same mistakes will hopefully not be made.

The last outcome this class helped me to achieve was to develop knowledge of conventions by demonstrating competence in grammar, punctuation, and spelling, practicing genre conventions for structure, paragraphing, tone and mechanics, and understanding the concepts of intellectual property that motivate documentation conventions through application of recognized citation styles. The first two outcomes are rather similar, in the regard that most of the assignments help reach this outcome. Grammar will never change in writing, so it is important to get it write initially. The only assignment that really tested this was peer review. Being able to recognize sentences that do not make sense is helpful, and will help a writer catch confusing or contradicting statements. As for practicing genre conventions, almost every project helped display that. Writing paragraphs and formatting them correctly is easy, so there is not reason to drag on about this point. Lastly, the assignment that helped reach the outcome about citing intellectual property was the research assignment. It is important to cite your sources so that you do not plagiarize someone’s work, and jeopardize your own academic career. The research assignment helped because you had to find sources for you argument, and as a result, citations would follow.

During the course, I was faced with a few assignments where I had to write day by day, and not just in one day. Writing is not something to do, but rather a process that you have to follow in order to succeed. Many of the different assignments helped improve my skills in rhetoric, critical thinking, drafting, and conventions. While some did not improve much, others did exponentially. The work is not perfect, but for a beginner in college, it shows that I am willing to put in the time and effort to become more than just a beginner. As I progress through school, I hope to not only maintain these skills, but improve them also. Writing is not something that you leave behind after leaving school, so it is important that I take these skills not only with me for the next four years, but for the rest of my life. If I succeed in doing that, then I will always be prepared for any assignment that my field of interest throws at me.

Preceptor Call for Fall 2024

If you are teaching an introductory or critical gateway course this coming fall, please consider asking an upper level student to join you as a student preceptor. This opportunity is available to full- and part-time faculty members, as well as, staff members teaching as adjunct faculty.

A preceptor can assist with leading discussion, running writing workshops, leading a lab section, overseeing a group project, leading a class on a subject in which the preceptor displays some expertise, running an exam review session, offering the instructor feedback around creating a classroom environment supportive of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and so on. While preceptors are explicitly not involved in grading any student work, they can provide you with key insights into what is working well in your course and where students may need extra support to achieve a specific learning outcome. Most preceptors are also comfortable with various online platforms. Thus, they can provide instructors with feedback about online assignments and online activities if their students are confused about content or online learning. Their participation in your class will also help them strengthen their leadership, collaboration, and communication skills.

The Preceptor Program, along with all tutoring services, are now overseen by the Center for Student Success (CSS). If you are interested in having a student preceptor in Fall 2024, please email the following information to Julie Spring at  [email protected]  by Friday, April 19.

A preceptor is a unique academic leadership position offering outstanding undergraduate students the opportunity to work with a faculty mentor in an introductory or critical gateway course. The work of preceptors varies widely depending on the nature of the course, the needs of the instructor, and the strengths of the individual preceptor, but typically includes attending all class sessions, doing the reading and other work necessary to be prepared for those sessions, meeting weekly with the faculty member to discuss the week’s activities, and completing a short reflective essay about the preceptor experience at term’s end. It might also involve leading discussion, running writing workshops, leading a lab section, overseeing a group project, leading a class on a subject in which the preceptor displays some expertise, running an exam review session, offering the instructor feedback around creating a classroom environment supportive of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and so on. Students invited to participate in this unique in-house internship opportunity are expected to attend mandatory training workshops, and log a minimum of 60 hours of work, including class and workshop attendance, preparation for class, regular meetings with the faculty sponsor, etc. P/NP.

What Solar Eclipse-Gazing Has Looked Like for the Past 2 Centuries

Millions of people on Monday will continue the tradition of experiencing and capturing solar eclipses, a pursuit that has spawned a lot of unusual gear.

In a black-and-white photo from 1945, nine men, some in military uniforms, stand in the middle of a New York City street. They are holding a small piece of what looks like glass or a photographic negative above their heads to protect their eyes as they watch the eclipse. The original border of the print, as well as some numbers and crop marks drawn onto it, are visible.

For centuries, people have been clamoring to glimpse solar eclipses. From astronomers with custom-built photographic equipment to groups huddled together with special glasses, this spectacle has captivated the human imagination.

Creating a Permanent Record

In 1860, Warren de la Rue captured what many sources describe as the first photograph of a total solar eclipse . He took it in Rivabellosa, Spain, with an instrument known as the Kew Photoheliograph . This combination of a telescope and camera was specifically built to photograph the sun.

Forty years later, Nevil Maskelyne, a magician and an astronomy enthusiast, filmed a total solar eclipse in North Carolina. The footage was lost, however, and only released in 2019 after it was rediscovered in the Royal Astronomical Society’s archives.

Telescopic Vision

For scientists and astronomers, eclipses provide an opportunity not only to view the moon’s umbra and gaze at the sun’s corona, but also to make observations that further their studies. Many observatories, or friendly neighbors with a telescope, also make their instruments available to the public during eclipses.

Women from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and their professor tested out equipment ahead of their eclipse trip (to “catch old Sol in the act,” as the original New York Times article phrased it) to New London, Conn., in 1922.

A group from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania traveled to Yerbaniz, Mexico, in 1923, with telescopes and a 65-foot camera to observe the sun’s corona .

Dr. J.J. Nassau, director of the Warner and Swasey Observatory at Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, prepared to head to Douglas Hill, Maine, to study an eclipse in 1932. An entire freight car was required to transport the institution’s equipment.

Indirect Light

If you see people on Monday sprinting to your local park clutching pieces of paper, or with a cardboard box of their head, they are probably planning to reflect or project images of the solar eclipse onto a surface.

Cynthia Goulakos demonstrated a safe way to view a solar eclipse , with two pieces of cardboard to create a reflection of the shadowed sun, in Lowell, Mass., in 1970.

Another popular option is to create a pinhole camera. This woman did so in Central Park in 1963 by using a paper cup with a small hole in the bottom and a twin-lens reflex camera.

Amateur astronomers viewed a partial eclipse, projected from a telescope onto a screen, from atop the Empire State Building in 1967 .

Back in Central Park, in 1970, Irving Schwartz and his wife reflected an eclipse onto a piece of paper by holding binoculars on the edge of a garbage basket.

Children in Denver in 1979 used cardboard viewing boxes and pieces of paper with small pinholes to view projections of a partial eclipse.

Staring at the Sun (or, How Not to Burn Your Retinas)

Eclipse-gazers have used different methods to protect their eyes throughout the years, some safer than others .

In 1927, women gathered at a window in a building in London to watch a total eclipse through smoked glass. This was popularized in France in the 1700s , but fell out of favor when physicians began writing papers on children whose vision was damaged.

Another trend was to use a strip of exposed photographic film, as seen below in Sydney, Australia, in 1948 and in Turkana, Kenya, in 1963. This method, which was even suggested by The Times in 1979 , has since been declared unsafe.

Solar eclipse glasses are a popular and safe way to view the event ( if you use models compliant with international safety standards ). Over the years there have been various styles, including these large hand-held options found in West Palm Beach, Fla., in 1979.

Parents and children watched a partial eclipse through their eclipse glasses in Tokyo in 1981.

Slimmer, more colorful options were used in Nabusimake, Colombia, in 1998.

In France in 1999.

And in Iran and England in 1999.

And the best way to see the eclipse? With family and friends at a watch party, like this one in Isalo National Park in Madagascar in 2001.
