How to create a good presentation 

If you know what you want to present on, it’s time to create an impactful presentation that grabs everyone’s attention. Presentation design plays a crucial role in how your presentation is received and remembered. To stand out and leave a memorable impact on your audience, create a Prezi presentation. Instead of a linear, slide-based presentation, offer an engaging and dynamic storytelling experience to your audience. Breathe life into your presentation with motion, zoom, and spatial relationships. When creating your presentation, consider the following three essential elements: 

Visuals play a significant part in presentation design. They evoke emotions, make a memorable impact, and give more context to the story. Not to mention, 65% of people are visual learners , so visual aids are helpful when explaining a complex topic. 

In your presentation, include different types of visuals, such as images, videos, GIFs, and stickers, all of which you can find in Prezi’s content library. When selecting your visuals, consider what’s relevant and brings additional value to the story. Only add what’s meaningful and necessary. A video or image at the right place and time will enrich the viewing experience and make your presentation more memorable. 

The layout of your presentation is the structure of your story. It’ll help you introduce the topic, intrigue your audience, and unfold the layers of your topic one by one until you disclose your main arguments and summarize the presentation. A good presentation layout has a hierarchical, chronological, or logical flow that leads the viewer from start to finish.

Prereq: Enrollment in MIS PhD Program The state of behavioral research in the IS function. MIS activities in an organization span the following three major areas: design and implementation of the MIS, use of the MIS, and management of the MIS function. Each of these processes is carried out at several levels: individual, group, organizational and inter-organizational. Identify behavioral issues of relevance for the cells defined by the process and level dimensions. Reading and discussion of the research literature surrounding the development, use, and implications of information technology.

Prereq: Enrollment in MIS PhD Program Three fundamental areas of Information Systems, namely, infrastructure, management, and processes. Infrastructure studies examine the IT architecture including computing, communication, data, and application. Management focuses on addressing the value added notion of IT. Finally processing addresses topics related to enabling role of IT in myriad of areas.

Prereq: MIS 6010 Strategic issues in IT management. Address issues such as aligning IT strategy with corporate strategy and functional strategies, IT structure, valuation, governance and control, and related topics. Provide students with research skills related to the boundary between IT and the firm's external environment.

Prereq: MIS 6010 Research issues in the emerging areas of collaboration, knowledge management, and enterprise intelligence. Topics will include emerging and contemporary technologies of Data Mining, Knowledge Discovery from Databases, Web Mining, organizational memory, and knowledge management.

Prereq: Enrollment in MIS PhD Program Focuses on analytical modeling and empirical analyses using methods drawn from economics, management science, and statistics/econometrics, etc. Example topics include economics of information goods; impact of information technologies on firm performance and policy outcomes; and analysis of data generated from social media and business transactions. Introduce doctoral students to the most cited research in IS, as well as to various behavioral research methods. Mathematical models to capture the essence or abstractions of real-world problems and applying established techniques to derive optimal solutions or business insights. Application of theories and tools from operations research, economics, computer science, and statistics to tackle problems regarding the development, marketing, utilization, and management of information technologies and systems in organizations and the society. Intermediate level statistical and econometric methods used in MIS research. Preparation to conduct rigorous longitudinal analyses. Statistical and econometric methods used to examine phenomena that can evolve with the passage of time. Methods used for analyzing cross-sectional data. Application of advanced empirical methods in combination with rigorous theoretical arguments. ( Typically Offered: Fall)

Introduction for doctoral students to Information Systems research methods rooted in computational thinking. Topics include important issues in IS research that benefit from computational thinking; and computational methodologies commonly used in IS research.

Prereq: Instructor Permission for Course Preparation of a research manuscript to be submitted to a peer-reviewed academic journal. Students will work with a faculty mentor on a research project. ( Typically Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer)

Prereq: Instructor Permission for Course Preparation of a second research manuscript to be submitted to a peer-reviewed academic journal. Although students work under the supervision of a faculty mentor, the students will take independent responsibility for the research project.

Examine opportunities and implications of information technologies and human computer interaction on social and organizational systems. How to Present to an Audience That Knows More Than You

Lean into being a facilitator — not an expert.

What happens when you have to give a presentation to an audience that might have some professionals who have more expertise on the topic than you do? While it can be intimidating, it can also be an opportunity to leverage their deep and diverse expertise in service of the group’s learning. And it’s an opportunity to exercise some intellectual humility, which includes having respect for other viewpoints, not being intellectually overconfident, separating your ego from your intellect, and being willing to revise your own viewpoint — especially in the face of new information. This article offers several tips for how you might approach a roomful of experts, including how to invite them into the discussion without allowing them to completely take over, as well as how to pivot on the proposed topic when necessary.

I was five years into my executive coaching practice when I was invited to lead a workshop on “Coaching Skills for Human Resource Leaders” at a global conference. As the room filled up with participants, I identified a few colleagues who had already been coaching professionally for more than a decade. I felt self-doubt start to kick in: Why were they even here? What did they come to learn? Why do they want to hear from me?

Students Impress In 2024 UREP Project Presentations

Undergraduate student research continues to thrive at New York Tech, with the 30 College of Engineering and Computing Sciences students showcasing their projects on May 9 as part of the Undergraduate Research and Entrepreneurship Program (UREP) providing the most recent evidence.

Presenting their projects on topics ranging from developing green roofing systems for urban agriculture and using AI in dentistry to building robots to mitigate unsolved home invasions, studying the impact of flash floods on electric vehicles in New York City, and much more, the eight teams comprising students from both New York campuses highlighted the findings of their group research or entrepreneurship projects conducted under the guidance of faculty mentors. UREP provides each team with $500 to cover the cost of supplies and materials; the projects can run for a single semester or extend to multiple semesters for teams pursuing further development. 

Since the spring of 2018, more than 300 students have participated in this program established by Associate Professor Ziqian (Cecilia) Dong, Ph.D. , who welcomed faculty, staff, students, and other attendees to the seventh annual event.   

Addressing the student participants, Dean Babak D. Beheshti, Ph.D. , said, “All of you have had a chance to work closely with the College of Engineering and Computing Sciences faculty in an undergraduate research project, which is a really valuable experience for you personally and professionally, and an amazing thing to put on your résumé for whatever pursuit that you have in mind after graduation.”  

Teams featured undergraduate students, ranging from first through fourth year, and from programs including computer science, electrical and computer engineering, and mechanical engineering. Most teams were co-ed. Presented projects included:

The NHL ’s annual March GMs meetings take place next week in Palm Beach, Fla., a three-day affair beginning Monday.

Let’s examine some of what’s expected to be discussed:

Executive committee

Before the actual GMs meetings begin, the GMs’ executive committee is scheduled to meet Sunday, along with commissioner Gary Bettman, deputy commissioner Bill Daly and senior executive vice president Colin Campbell, to go over the agenda.

The committee consists of the Edmonton Oilers’ Ken Holland, St. Louis Blues’ Doug Armstrong, Detroit Red Wings’ Steve Yzerman, Winnipeg Jets’ Kevin Cheveldayoff, New York Islanders’ Lou Lamoriello and Carolina Hurricanes’ Don Waddell. Lots of experience, obviously, in this group.

Cheveldayoff replaced David Poile on the committee for this season after the longtime Nashville Predators architect stepped down from his GM job after last season.

The committee was created two years ago, so this is still a relatively new body finding its way as far as how to be most effective. For many years, the owners’ executive committee has wielded great power, dictating how things play out at the Board of Governors level ahead of owners’ meetings. A new owner, for example, needs the blessing of the owners’ executive committee before an actual at-large vote of all owners on a franchise sale.

The GMs’ executive committee isn’t meant to wield that kind of power. It’s more about being a liaison between the GMs at large and the league. The basic function of the committee is to facilitate organizing GMs meetings agenda items and point out issues that should be discussed with the league ahead of the meetings.

Player safety presentation

The player safety group, led by George Parros, always presents to the GMs at their meetings, but next week’s presentation will be a more expansive discussion given the controversial events that have transpired this season, as my TSN colleague Darren Dreger reported in our Insider Trading segment Thursday evening.

The Morgan Rielly suspension for sure will be brought up next week, as well as other instances from this season: think Nick Cousins , Charlie McAvoy , David Perron , Brendan Gallagher and Jacob Trouba . Player safety has been in the spotlight more than in the past few years.

I would love to be a fly on the wall for this discussion, just to see the back and forth between GMs with views on some of the suspensions. But as someone this week reminded me, if things get too heated in that discussion next week, the commissioner is in the room to intervene.

One thing I’ve seen over the years at these meetings is Parros having one-on-one discussions with a GM during lunch break or after the meetings. I’m guessing that’s probably more conducive to a healthy dialogue than the group forum. I suspect we’ll see a bit of both next week.

3-on-3 on the agenda

You may remember that at the last GMs meetings, in November in Toronto, managers and league officials discussed three-on-three overtime and whether it needed tweaking to help avoid the long possessions and leaving the offensive zone to constantly regroup, etc.

“I am in favor of exploring tweaks,” Armstrong told The Athletic at the time. “Three-on-three is excellent entertainment when played with pace and multiple scoring opportunities. It is usually the top-end skilled players on the ice, and to have them show off their speed and skill is great for the fans.”

Added Kraken GM Ron Francis, also in November this first time this came up: “I just think OT is not as exciting as when it first came in — not as many change of possessions with all the regroups. So we are trying to look at if there was a so-called ‘over-and-back line,’ does that change things? I like the thought process.”

The NHL hockey ops department has since then closely monitored three-on-three overtime, and ultimately I believe the league’s recommendation to GMs next week will be to leave it alone — that introducing a penalty or a stoppage for coming across the center red line on a regroup would be too intrusive. However, the league will be open to feedback from GMs, so we’ll see where it goes.

LTIR conversation expected

Even if it doesn’t end up on the official agenda per se, the expectation what is that the league will be open to hearing from GMs on where they stand regarding the LTIR/salary-cap/playoff discussion. A couple of teams have already reached out to the league about it.

GMs discussed this two years ago at their meetings, with the idea from Holland to create some form of salary cap for the playoffs. The league at the time said it would give the topic some thought, but ultimately it decided a few months later that there was nothing to be done. If the league felt it was enough of a problem, which I don’t think it does, it would require the involvement of the NHL Players’ Association, because changing the cap rules is a CBA issue.

As an aside, the most underplayed part of this entire debate is the voice of the players. There’s the competitive balance side of that: How do players feel about some teams having larger payrolls than others because of LTIR, and is that an unfair advantage in pursuit of the Stanley Cup? But there’s also the escrow conversation: Does LTIR spending cause the players to eat up more than their 50-50 share with owners and lead to more escrow?

In any case, I think the league will be open to the LTIR/cap/playoffs discussion next week, and if there are enough GMs who have an issue with the way it works, then perhaps that can spur change. I’m not convinced there will be a groundswell that makes the league think there needs to be a real conversation with the NHLPA about it, but we shall see.

Hockey ops presentation, coach’s challenges

As always, the league hockey ops department, led by Campbell, will have a presentation, and the timing in mid-March is always perfect as far as going over things ahead of the playoffs.

Specifically, hockey ops will go over examples from this season of video review for coach’s challenges on offside and goalie interference, looking at close calls to explain why certain decisions were made and what to look for in similar circumstances come playoff time.

One recent example is from a Blues – Boston Bruins game just this past week, with a Boston goal overturned on a play that was deemed offside. Jack Edwards on the Bruins broadcast was none too pleased, but the league will probably explain during its presentation why the call was correct.

Goalie interference will likely be the most volatile topic, as it usually is. Getting 32 GMs to agree on various examples of goalie interference is near impossible. No one wants Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final to be decided on a coach’s challenge for goalie interference, but the idea again next week is to try to illustrate the league’s attempt at consistency on it.

Venue in Vegas for awards

The NHL still hasn’t formalized a plan for its awards show, and in fact, there’s no guarantee there will be a formal show this year.

The league toyed with the idea of having it in Los Angeles a few days before the draft in Las Vegas, but that’s not happening. League officials are visiting venues in Las Vegas early next week to see if they can find something that makes sense there on relatively short notice.

So it’s still TBD on whether or not there will be an actual show. But if there is one, it makes sense it would be in Las Vegas.

Uni staff fall back on Excel to work around mis-coded transactions in Oracle system

Two years after going live, the project that left employees unpaid still needs work.

Updated The fallout from Edinburgh University's ill-fated Oracle HR and finance implementation continues with one department recording thousands of mis-coded transactions relating to more than £300,000 in spending.

More than two years after the Fusion HR, payroll, and finance system went live, the Scottish university's Biology Department noted that transactions are still mis-coded. One insider told The Register they were using Excel spreadsheets to get an unofficial ledger of spending to make up for the system's shortcomings.

The Register understands the problems are indicative of ongoing issues with the system, internally called People and Money (P&M), throughout the £1.3 billion budget institution.

In December, an independent report from PA Consulting showed how before the implementation, senior managers missed warning signs that the project was not ready. The report commissioned by the University Court , an independent governance body, said problems related to change management aspects of the project that were not given sufficient attention before it went live.

"Some users, who tried to provide constructive input and feedback, felt that they were considered disruptive by leadership and not listened to," it said.

An internal email seen by The Register this week said: "The implementation of P&M has been very difficult and resulted in a lot of additional work for colleagues."

It noted that the School of Biological Sciences was not allocating costs to respective research projects. "Currently we have 5,204 transactions totalling £385,558.14 sitting within a general research fund which should be sitting on individual research grants, and this number is rising all the time," the email said.

An insider told The Register that the P&M software system offered a poor choice of default code, and allowed for confusion between general ledger and project codes, leading to "this particular mess."

"Many of us are flying blind, or keeping our own unofficial ledger in Excel, or having to bother the finance staff regularly to get balances. Finance staff are excellent but working with a weird system that was imposed on them," they said.

The Register has offered the university the opportunity to respond.

In February, the university awarded systems integrator and support company Inoapps an additional £3.6 million ($4.5 million) contract fee for "changes in requirements and additional work" on the Oracle implementation that left staff and suppliers paid late in 2022.

The additional fee took the total contract value to £37 million ($46.4 million) on a deal originally signed for £25 million ($31.3 million). In March last year, the company got an extra £8 million ($10 million) for "changes in requirements and additional work."

In May, the university's Senate, a representative body made up of students and academics, said it had no confidence in the institution's management of the Oracle migration. Management failed to answer "vital questions about the payment backlog resulting from the implementation," it said.

Last month, the Court said the university had updated it on the People & Money system improvement plan.

"The University's executive leadership was continuing to work towards full implementation of the recommendations of the independent report on People & Money, and Court would continue to exercise appropriate oversight of this," it said. ®

A University of Edinburgh spokesperson said: "Following the implementation of the People and Money system, much progress has been made with our finance service. We know that there is more to do and we are keeping our community updated and continue to listen to their concerns."

Miss Teen USA UmaSofia Srivastava resigns days after Miss USA Noelia Voigt steps down

Miss Teen USA 2023 is resigning just days after Miss USA Noelia Voigt .

UmaSofia Srivastava , who took home the 2023 title in September, shared a lengthy statement Wednesday announcing her departure because her " personal values no longer fully align with the direction of the organization."

"After months of grappling with the decision, I have made the choice to resign from the title of Miss Teen USA 2023. I am grateful for all the support from my family, my state directors, my sister queens, and the fans who have cheered me on since I won my state title," Srivastava wrote. "I will always look back on my time as Miss NJ Teen USA fondly, and the experience of representing my state as a first generation, Mexican-Indian American at the national level was fulfilling in itself."

In a statement shared with USA TODAY on Wednesday, Miss USA CEO and President Laylah Rose said, "Our all-encompassing goal at Miss USA is to celebrate and empower women. Our participants make a real difference in this country and around the globe."

Rose's statement continued, "All along, my personal goal as the head of this organization has been to inspire women to always create new dreams, have the courage to explore it all, and continue to preserve integrity along the way. I hold myself to these same high standards and I take these allegations seriously. Please be assured that the well-being of all individuals associated with Miss USA is my top priority."

In her resignation statement, Srivastava vowed to continue her philanthropy with The Lotus Pedal Foundation and the Bridge of Books Foundation as she completes her junior year of high school.

"While this was certainly not how I saw my reign coming to a close, I am excited to continue my advocacy for education and acceptance, start applying to colleges, and share some exciting new projects on That’s Fan Behavior with those of you who plan to stick around," she captioned the post, referring to her blog .

Srivastava added: "At the end of the day, I am so lucky to have had the privilege of this experience, but if this is just a chapter, I know that the story of my life will truly be incredible."

Miss USA Noelia Voigt resigned for her 'mental health,' leading to fan theories

On Monday, Voigt, who was awarded Miss USA in September 2023,  announced her resignation in a statement  on Instagram. The former title holder wrote, "In life, I strongly value the importance of making decisions that feel best for you and your mental health."

Her decision to relinquish her Miss USA crown has sparked a flurry of online speculation after fans noticed a strange detail about her statement.

In the comments of her post and elsewhere on social media, users pieced the first letter in each sentence of her statement to reveal the phrase "I AM SILENCED" — though this discounts the last three sentences, the first letters of which spell "HIP." It was not immediately clear whether the message was intentional.

Miss USA previously said in a statement to USA TODAY, "We respect and support former Miss USA Noelia Voigt’s decision to step down from her duties. The well-being of our titleholders is a top priority, and we understand her need to prioritize herself at this time."

The statement added, "The organization is currently reviewing plans for the transition of responsibilities to a successor and an announcement regarding the crowning of the new Miss USA will be coming soon."

Prior to Voigt's announcement, Miss USA social media director Claudia Michelle  shared on Instagram  Friday that she has resigned from her role. In a statement posted to social media, she wrote, "I have had the privilege of getting to work with Noelia closely and have unfortunately seen a decline in her mental health since we (first) met. I feel like her ability to share her story and her platform have been diminished."

"I feel the way current management speaks about their titleholders is unprofessional and inappropriate," she went on to write. "I disavow workplace toxicity and bullying of any kind."

In an Instagram story, Michelle shared Voigt's statement and highlighted the "I AM SILENCED" letters.

Miss USA Organization denies accusations of toxic environment

In response to Michelle's post, the Miss USA Organization said in a statement to USA TODAY, "We are troubled to hear the false accusations made by a former Miss USA employee. Miss USA is committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment, and we take these allegations seriously. Indeed, we have and will continue to prioritize the well-being of all individuals involved with Miss USA."

In the caption of her original Instagram post, Voigt acknowledged that her resignation "may come as a large shock to many," but added, "Never compromise your physical and mental well-being."
