The Eiffel Tower: Presentation And History
The Eiffel Tower is an emblematic monument of Paris, built by Gustave Eiffel for the Universal Exhibition of 1889. Today, it is the most visited paying monument in the world, with 6.893 million visitors in 2007. We invite you to discover some of the secrets of the 'Iron Lady'.
The symbol of France
The Eiffel Tower , which has become the symbol of France and its capital, is a puddled iron tower built by Gustave Eiffel and his collaborators for the 1889 World's Fair. Originally named the 300-metre tower , the monument was thought by Eiffel to be a 'summary of contemporary science'. It is located at the end of the Champ-de-Mars, bordering the Seine.
History of its construction
On the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of 1889, which marked the centenary of the Revolution of 1789, the reborn Republic wanted to make a splash. It launched a major competition in the Journal officiel challenging engineers to 'raise an iron tower on the Champ-de-Mars, with a square base, 125 metres on each side and 300 metres high'. The project of the contractor Gustave Eiffel , the engineers Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier , and the architect Stephen Sauvestre was finally selected from 107 projects. Gustave Eiffel signed an agreement with the government on January 8, 1887 . This project represented an extraordinary technical feat for its time: its design required 5300 drawings by 50 engineers and draftsmen. More than a hundred workers prefabricated more than 18,000 parts in the workshop and 132 workers worked on the site during assembly. Here is the chronology of its construction: - January 28, 1887: foundations begin. - July 1, 1887: start of Work on the first floor. - December 7, 1887: joining of the four ridges and the first floor. - September 1888: start of Work of the second floor. - March 31, 1889 : official completion of the tower which becomes the highest monument in the world - May 6, 1889 : start of the 1889 Universal Exhibition - May 15, 1889: opening of the Eiffel Tower to the public (by the First week, it receives 28,922 visitors; ascent to the first and second floors is done on foot). - May 26, 1889 : the ascent of the tower is done by elevator - October 31, 1889 : end of the 1889 World's Fair (almost 2 million people visited the monument in only six months). In 1898, Eiffel had a weather laboratory installed at the top of the tower, and a few years later, in 1901, a permanent radio transmitter. The tower, which has been used for many scientific experiments, is still used today as a transmitter for radio and television programmes.
Who was Gustave Eiffel?
Alexandre Gustave Bonnickausen , known as Gustave Eiffel , was born in Dijon, on December 15, 1832 and died in Paris on December 27, 1923. In 1852 he entered the École centrale des arts et manufactures in Paris and graduated as a chemical engineer in 1855. In 1856, Eiffel met Charles Nepveu, a steel construction contractor. He demonstrated his engineering skills by building the Bordeaux railway Bridge in 1858. He was also responsible for - the framework of the Le Bon Marché store in Paris (1876) - the framework of the Carnot high school - the dome of The observatory of nice - the Ateliers Berthier in Paris, with Charles Garnier - the Souleuvre viaduct in Calvados. Gustave Eiffel is also famous for having contributed to the Statue of liberty in New york and for having participated in the construction of the Briare bridge-canal (1896).
The Eiffel Tower in figures
Originally 300 metres high, the tower has been raised by numerous antennas and is now 325 metres high. It has remained the tallest tower in the world for over 40 years. The impressive 'Iron Lady' has 4 pillars inscribed in a square of 125m on each side and oriented according to the 4 cardinal points. Its steel structure weighs 7300 tons and its total weight is 10,100 tons . It is composed of 2,500,000 rivets and 18,038 pieces of iron .
Did you know that?
In 1903, it was considered to be demolished. Starting in 1910, the TSF installed at the top of the tower broadcast signals to the entire world. The Eiffel Tower was also used for the debut of Television in France in 1925. It lost its title as the world's tallest monument in 1930: it was then overtaken by the Chrysler Building in New york (318.9 meters with the antenna). The Eiffel Tower has inspired countless artistic representations and has been the subject of many sumptuous illuminations. It has also been the envy of other countries that have built replicas of the famous monument.

Gustave Eiffel
The Tower is not Gustave Eiffel’s only creation. This enthusiast and true genius was able to go beyond his own limits to bequeath to us monuments such as the dome on the Nice Observatory, the metallic structure of the Statue of Liberty, not to mention the Bordeaux railway bridge.

Gustave Eiffel : a passionate engineer
An engineer by training, Eiffel founded and developed a company specializing in metal structural work, whose crowning achievement was the Eiffel Tower. He devoted the last thirty years of his life to his experimental research.
Born in Dijon in 1832, he graduated from the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in 1855, the same year that Paris hosted the first World's Fair.
He spent several years in the South West of France, where he supervised work on the great railway bridge in Bordeaux, and afterwards he set up in his own right in 1864 as a "constructor", that is, as a business specializing in metal structural work.
His outstanding career as a constructor was marked by work on the Porto viaduct over the river Douro in 1876, the Garabit viaduct in 1884, Pest railway station in Hungary, the dome of the Nice observatory , and the ingenious structure of the Statue of Liberty . It culminated in 1889 with the Eiffel Tower. This date marks the end of his career as an entrepreneur.
An International heritage
Eiffel built hundreds of metal structures of all kinds all around the world.
Eiffel built hundreds of metal structures of all kinds, all around the world.
Bridges, and in particular railway bridges, were his favourite field of work, but he also won renown for his metal structural work and industrial installations. His career was marked by a large number of fine buildings, among which two of the most outstanding are the twin edifices of the Porto viaduct and the Garabit viaduct in the Cantal region of France. Equally outstanding are certain other structures in which the pure inventiveness of Eiffel's company was allowed free rein, such as the "portable" bridges sold around the world in "kits", the ingenious structure of the Statue of Liberty in New York, and of course the Eiffel Tower itself.
Panama: A colossal... and disastrous project
In 1887 Eiffel agreed to build the locks of the Panama canal, an immense undertaking badly managed by Ferdinand De Lesseps, which ended in the biggest financial scandal of the century.
This was the biggest contract in his entire career in business, and also the one with the greatest risk. Given the risk he faced, he was granted major financial advantages and solid guarantees, which allowed him to collect his profit as soon as the work was begun.
Despite the care which Eiffel took in the project, the liquidation of the canal construction company, Compagnie du Canal, on February 4 1889, led to his own indictment for fraud alongside De Lesseps and his son, and to a sentence of two years in prison and a fine of 2000 francs, even though nothing could really be blamed on him personally.
With his honour and dignity severely compromised, he withdrew from business. The ruling was later to be annulled by the highest appeal court, the Cour de Cassation, liberating him of all obligations concerning the accusations, which put an end to any further court action against him.
Returning to his roots: scientific research
In retirement following the Panama scandal, Eiffel devoted the final thirty years of his life to a fruitful career as a scientist .
First of all he set himself to finding a practical application for the Tower, which had only been built to stand for twenty years. He employed it in wind resistance experiments, as a meteorological observation post, and above all as a giant aerial mast for the new science of radio broadcasting.
He collected meteorological data at posts installed in his various properties, and at the same time pursued his research into aerodynamics , building a wind tunnel right at the foot of the Tower, and then a second and much larger one on Rue Boileau in Paris, in 1909. This latter wind tunnel is still in service. He died on December 27, 1923 at the age of 91 .

Paris 2024 Olympic medals will all have a small piece of Eiffel Tower
Paris — There's another metal on offer for winners at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. In addition to the customary gold, silver and bronze, each winner's medal will feature a small piece of iron straight from the Eiffel Tower. Small chunks of the iconic tower — an instantly recognizable symbol of Paris and of France — have been included in the medals to mark 100 years since the City of Light last hosted the Olympic Games. Organizers unveiled the medals Thursday, just six months before the Paris games are set to get underway. Every individual medal has at its center a hexagon of iron from the tower. They all come from pieces removed from the structure during different renovations over the last century. The pieces of metal were carefully preserved, and the organization in charge of the Eiffel Tower's preservation donated them to the Paris Olympic committee to create the unique medal designs.
Jean-François Martins, President of the Société d'Exploitation de la tour Eiffel, said at the unveiling that he hoped the athletes would appreciate the "unforgettable souvenir of Paris" made from "this unique metal."
The Eiffel Tower is made entirely of a special type of iron known as "puddle" iron. Manufactured in forges and blast furnaces in Lorraine, eastern France, the cast iron produced by reducing iron ore is refined with an operation called "puddling." By removing the excess carbon still present in cast iron, puddle iron is made into an almost pure material, which is extremely strong. The tower was erected in 1889 as part of the Universal Exhibition. Designed by Gustave Eiffel, it was originally intended to be a temporary structure, but it captured so much attention that officials decided to keep it standing on the bank of the River Seine.
The Olympic and Paralympic medals were designed by craftworkers at the famous Chaumet House of Jewellery, which is part of the luxury LVMH group. It's the first time in the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games that a jeweller has designed the medals. "The Maison Chaumet creative team has conceived each medal as a jewel, taking inspiration from the Parisian craftsmanship of its legendary Place Vendôme workshops and illustrating the vocation shared by all the Houses in our group: the ability to make people dream," said Antoine Arnault, of LVMH Image & Environment. "We hope that each athlete will enjoy wearing and admiring the medal as much as we enjoyed creating it for them." "A symbol of excellence, a source of motivation, of surpassing oneself and of ultimate achievement, medals are much more than objects: They represent the apotheosis in the career of elite athletes," said Tony Estenguet, President of Paris 2024. "Their power to fascinate and inspire goes far beyond the circle of athletes." Estenguet also noted that the Paris 2024 organizers had said from the start that they wanted to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games closer together. The torch design is the same for both and, to continue that philosophy, the medals for both Games share a common face, the side with the hexagon of iron from the tower.
The other side is different. The Olympic medals feature the goddess of victory, Nike, emerging from the Panathenaic Stadium, where the Olympic Games were revived in 1896. In a nod to 2024, the Eiffel Tower is seen in the background, along with the Acropolis. The Paralympic medals feature a low-angle view under the Eiffel Tower. In keeping with the spirit of inclusion in the Games, the inscriptions "Paris" and "2024" are written in universal Braille — the script invented by Frenchman Louis Braille. And to ensure the three different metals can be distinguished by touch, lines are engraved on the edge of each medal, I for gold, II for silver and III for bronze.
The design of Olympic medals has become standardized to a degree, with each featuring the goddess Nike and the Olympic rings, as well as the name of the games in question and the discipline or sport concerned. Each organizing committee is free to adapt the primary design and choose a unique design for the reverse side, however. There is no standardization of the Paralympic medals.
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will run from July 26 until Aug. 11, and the Paralympic Games from Aug. 28 through Sept. 8.
