As someone with a lifelong interest in cultures, people, and travel , I have always been drawn to industries where these elements intersect, which led me to the dynamic and vibrant world of hospitality. It is with this interest that I am drawn towards a degree in BA (Hons) in Hospitality Management. This field combines my passion for providing excellent service with the excitement of an industry that is constantly evolving, driven by innovation and shaped by cultural trends.

What truly thrills me about hospitality management is the opportunity to create memorable experiences for people. Whether it’s through culinary experiences that tantalize the senses or personalized guest services that make people feel valued and cared for, the hotel industry provides an outlet for creativity, innovation, and service.

My background in business studies has equipped me with essential skills such as strategic planning, financial management, and marketing, all of which I believe are foundational to effective hospitality management. In addition, I have chosen elective courses in psychology, which have provided deeper insights into understanding individuals and cultures, facilitating better guest relationship management.

To augment my academic pursuits, I have seized on opportunities to gain practical experience in hospitality. Last year, I interned at a boutique hotel in the city, where I rotated between different departments – from front office and food and beverage to events management. This gave me a firsthand understanding of hotel operations, the coordination involved in providing seamless service, and the crucial role each department plays, on its own and collectively, in delivering exceptional guest experiences.

A significant life experience that has shaped my perspective of hospitality management was a year spent studying abroad. This exposed me to a myriad of cultures and practices and awakened me to the importance of cultural sensitivity in hospitality. Navigating new environments and connecting with people of diverse backgrounds provided me with valuable insights that I believe are transferrable to the multicultural and diverse operation of the hospitality industry.

On a personal level, I am proud of my ability to blend creativity and analytical thinking. For instance, during my internship , I proposed and implemented a successful initiative to enhance guest engagement by incorporating local cultural elements into daily hotel activities. The success and guest appreciation for this project bolstered my confidence in my potential as a future hospitality manager.

In terms of my suitability for this program, my excellent communication skills, attention to detail, ability to work in teams, and adaptability are but some of the skills that I feel make me an excellent candidate for this course.

Looking to the future, I aim to embark on a managerial career in the hotel industry with a focus on boutique and luxury properties. I dream of influencing hospitality trends and driving innovation in guest experiences. In an era where experiential travel is gaining momentum, I am excited at the prospect of blending local cultural experiences with luxury hospitality services.

Choosing to pursue a BA (Hons) in Hospitality Management is, for me, a choice to follow a passion and a dream. A dream to be part of an industry that combines continuous learning, innovation, and customer service. With this degree, I am confident that I will have the skills, knowledge, and network to thrive in, contribute to, and influence the hospitality industry. I am eager for the opportunity to immerse myself in my studies, broaden my horizons, and prepare for an exciting journey in hospitality management.

I have noticed that tourism and hospitality are closely-related areas of an economic and social phenomenon that have developed a critical role in the world economy. The industry has become one of the major players in international commerce, and represents at the same time one of the main income sources for many developing countries with economic and employment benefits. The profession is not only profit oriented but also interesting and full of colourful funs and challenges. I am highly impressed with the growth of the industry and the prospects of careers development in the sector – a master degree in International Tourism and Hospitality Management can prepare me for this.

I think, from the course, I will develop a critical capacity for understanding knowledge and being able to act upon it, and I will develop the positive and proactive attitudes of management that are necessary in the international tourism and hospitality industry. In fact this course emphasises the development and enhancement of transferable intellectual and study skills that are highly relevant to contemporary business and management careers in this booming industry.

From the course, I expect to learn in-depth knowledge of modern approaches to Tourism and Hospitality business and management, an understanding of the relationship between people & Tourist, organisations, and business and management in different organisational structures, published modern financial techniques,  an understanding of the central importance of innovation in a range of different Tourism and Hospitality organisational contexts – entrepreneurial start-up firms, large business corporations, an understanding of the broader social context of the Tourism and Hospitality world, and the opportunity to assess my own personal development needs to help me focus my career in the Tourism and Hospitality field.

Prior to my current visa, I studied a general MBA - this study has enabled me gaining typical knowledge in general business administration. These were purely theoretical common knowledge combining bit of everything. Today’s businesses are more tailored and personalised. Managers in the ever competitive global arena are now specialising in different segments of industry and then within functional areas of organisations and departments. General MBA occasionally does not attract head-hunters attentions. I have felt this every moment of my PSW visa while looking to build a career and ended up realising that I must gain expertise in area that has individual identity rather than a generic name, and after thorough research I have found Tourism and Hospitality Management is the area where my heart responds and mind concentrates to match my academic tastes.

To me studying tourism & hospitality is about trying to understand the problems and opportunities raised by developing and operating a major sector of the economy that has major effects on the destinations themselves. The philosophy underlying the Tourism and Hospitality Scheme is that of the contextualised management degree. These contextual matters primarily include strategic tourism and hospitality management, international marketing, human resource management, financial management for the hospitality industry, social issues, political issues, environmental issues, global issues, and a range of specialist areas of interest to the sector (sport, event management, environment and hotel management).

In this MSc at the University of Bedfordshire, I will be expected to be able to read about, understand, and articulate a very wide range of academic and industry sources, case studies and resources. In the University of Bedfordshire This MSc is one of the most robust, challenging, relevant and industry-focused of its kind in the UK. The course is underpinned by world-leading research and experts from several disciplinary departments within the University; real-life industry case studies and examples; draws on an impressive range of specialist and more generalist core and optional units; builds on a very popular and successful portfolio of tourism Masters awards; and equips students with the skills, knowledge and experience to ensure they can confidently embark (and develop) a career in tourism and/or hospitality management. And this marks the difference between my MBA and this MSc – the MSc would equip me with applied and technical knowledge along with vocational skills and professionalism. This would develop and enhance my ability and skills while earn significant progressions in knowledge and potential successful career.

It is not hard to see that my past studies in the areas of business and management including my MBA would have positive and close impact and effects to complement knowledge of the this MSc programme. Due to the similarities of the business and management part of this MSc with my previous studies, in particular the most recently completed MBA, I will have the advantages to transferring the related part of the knowledge to strengthen the understanding and performance. I aim to introduce new dimension in the class and contribute extra towards the research and practical attachment part of the course.

Hospitality is one of the fastest-growing, job-creating sectors in my home country, India and abroad, offering the opportunity of careers with rapid progression at management level in hotels, restaurants, pubs, clubs, bars, contract catering, hospitality services within other organisations or self-employed. The hospitality business is a worldwide industry, with many different working environments. There’s enormous scope for travel – from working at a ski resort in Canada to cruising in the Caribbean.

On the other hand, Tourism provides a wide range of job opportunities, including: tourism marketing officer; tour leader/trek leader; travel consultant; travel agency manager; tour operator resort representative; tour operator product manager; tour operator contracts manager; tour operator product development co-ordinator; tourist information centre manager; events manager or sales executive; attractions sales and marketing administrator; public relations officer; hotel marketing executive; arts administrator; conference organiser; lifestyle consultant; magazine journalist; FE college lecturer; catering manager; retail manager; Human Resources/Training officer; passenger service agents; airline and airport management; ferry or cruise manager and many others.

Therefore, there would a whole range of career opportunities for me once I qualify with this life-changing course that offers practical life-skills for the industry along with industry related contemporary knowledge. I do not see a better place to study this course other than University of Bedfordshire that are so down to the industry and demands of the sector.

Hospitality Management Personal Statement Example

Sample statement.

My decision to follow a career in hospitality management has been prompted by work experience that I undertook during the last two summer holidays. I was initially undecided about my career choices and took the job, as an assistant to an entertainment manager on a cruise ship, to earn some extra cash.

I realised how lucky I was to have such an opportunity and to sail around the Mediterranean for 6 weeks, getting paid but I did not expect to enjoy it so much. The work was hard but the difference between this and the 9-5 Saturday job I have also done in retail could not be more marked. I was outside for much of the day, able to enjoy the sunshine and my work was all done with the intention of giving the people on the cruise their holiday of a lifetime.

Although some of the tasks were quite menial, being able to help put on competitions, run the children’s club and participate in the evening events was fantastic. Playing with the children and mixing with the guests at the dinner dances could not be described as work! I worked closely with the manager and was impressed at his ability to work long hours but still remain cheerful with his staff and the guests at all times. This rubbed off on me and I was surprised at how being enthusiastic and helpful was very satisfying, particularly when people made it obvious that they appreciated what I was doing.

After my first summer on the ship, I was eager to sign up for another and was pleased that they wanted me back. When I got home I started my college course doing A-levels in English, French and Business Studies and started to research university courses that would enable me to pursue a career in hospitality management. Working towards this well-defined goal has motivated me in my studies and I have obtained B grades in all three subjects in my AS levels. My immediate aim is to push at least two of these grades up to n ‘A’  in my A2 exams.

The subjects I chose to study were chosen based on my interest and aptitude and all are highly relevant to a degree in hospitality management. I have become much more fluent and confident in French as my work experience brought me into contact with French guests on the ship who were happy to let me practise. I realise the value of languages in the industry and have started an evening class to learn Spanish. Improving my cooking and presentation skills is also very important and I have combined this with helping my mother to run a cooking and baking skills class for teenage mothers in my local area. Next summer I have lined up an 8-week work placement with another cruise ship and this time I will be a catering assistant, so that will be a big challenge.

I feel that I have the motivation, academic and practical skills to gain a good degree in hospitality management and to then take up a career in the industry. My ambition is to own a hotel one day, or perhaps run my own cruises with a fleet of cruise ships.

Cultural diversity has become a major issue in the hospitality industry of the United States, in particular, representing novel opportunities, benefits and challenges for an increasingly culturally diverse workforce. It is important, therefore, that we search together for practical recommendations that might help human resource managers in hospitality to successfully deal with cultural diversity issues. Cultural diversity training modules are called for so that human resource and hospitality company training programs might better facilitate students increasing their cultural diversity awareness and sensitivity, learning about cultural differences, and developing skills for managing cultural diversity issues.

My mission in the area of Hospitality Administration is to engage students in developing the foundational knowledge, demonstrated skills and professional attitudes required for success in careers in hospitality administration: hotel operation, food service management, and meeting and event management. Action Against Hunger (AAH) is a global humanitarian organization committed to ending world hunger. When you have a master’s degree, you’re more attractive to employers, whether in your own country or overseas. Here are some interesting programs that will get you abroad doing good work ASAP.

With events management, you could go into the humanitarian events field. The M.Sc. in Event Management at the HTL International School of Hospitality, Tourism and Languages provides you with 1 year of intensive training, language classes and an internship at one of the universities partner companies. Courses include strategic management and operational management. This program costs 3200 EUR per year.

The Master of Hospitality Management & Tourism at the same institution also involves foreign language training and an internship program at a local company. This time, the courses involved include hospitality management, tourism management and customer service and communication skills. This 9-month course costs 3200 EUR per year. Learning another language is so valuable in the humanitarian field, as are management skills.

Statement of Purpose(SOP) Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management

I am [name of the applicant] , born on [birth date] . I am a permanent resident of [address of residence] with a small-sized family consisting of my grandfather, father, mother, younger sister and me.

Regarding my academic qualifications, I completed my SLC (School Leaving Certificate) from [name of the school]  in 2016 with a GPA of 3.75(out of 4) under the Board of Government of Nepal, Ministry of Education. After that, I joined [name of a college] management faculty with Hotel Management as a significant subject. I completed my 10+2 education with an aggregate CGPA of 2.88 (out of 4) in 20##.

Similarly, I attended the IELTS exam on 13th September 20## and scored an overall band score of 6 with an individual band score of listening 6.5, reading 6.5, Writing 5.5 and Speaking 6. With this academic and English proficiency, I plan to pursue my undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management, from [name of the college] .

Though my preferred course is provided by the colleges and universities here in Nepal, the existing education system led me to choose abroad studies to pursue my career. Nepal's education system focuses on theoretical rather than practical aspects. But when working in the real world, only theoretical knowledge is insufficient to stand as a competent professional.  Nepal is a beautiful country rich in naturally outstanding landscapes. Being a famous tourist destination, the hospitality industry must maintain international standards, so the skills and knowledge gained here will become insufficient and become incompetent in a professional career. My country does have colleges and universities, but they are in few numbers, and the quality of education does not match international standards. This is also undeniable that the lack of variety of courses and fewer universities act as an obstacle to further education in Nepal.

Similarly, the available courses are not flexible and updated, and they have been taught with the same curriculum for many years. Moreover, I want to gain a degree which can be recognized worldwide and holds international exposure. I dream of getting internationally recognized degrees and serving my nation and people with my knowledge and experience.

Nepal is a naturally gifted country. There is always a queue of international tourists visiting. However, their hospitality services are average, except for a few industries. I will be enhanced with the multicultural experience by studying in international universities in collaboration with international students where I can know them and observe them closely, which will also help me to some extent and be a plus point in gaining knowledge about them and also help me in my future career. Thus, my main motive for studying abroad for a Bachelor's in Hospitality Management is to gain world-class education to be skilled in the hospitality industry.

Australia has become one of the top destinations among Nepalese students for their higher education. So, I researched the educational system and all other aspects and came up with some findings. Australia has one of the best and most progressive education systems. Regarding global ranking, Australia is ranked as the third most popular destination for international students in the English-speaking world, remaining only behind the United States and the UK. Similarly, Institutions in Australia also offer a wide variety of courses and degrees, with over 22,000 courses across 1,100 institutions, vital education, and infrastructure, and having 7 out of the top 100 universities worldwide. So, international students planning to complete their graduate and post-graduate levels can easily find the right school and field for them. In addition, the degrees we get from Australian colleges and universities have global recognition. Graduating degrees from Australian universities are highly sought after due to the impressive international reputation of the Australian education system, where they provide a unique kind of education and a learning style with the use of modern tools that encourage one to be innovative, creative, independently, confidential and so on, which are the critical qualities for any individual which can quickly draw anyone's attention towards them in today’s competitive market. The Australian Government's role is one of the main factors that attract international students to Australia. During my research, I learned that the Australian Government is responsive to student rights. Australia established the ESOS(Educational Services for overseas students) Act in 2000, which secures the rights of international students. Also, low crime rates make Australia a safe destination for students like me.

Some of the features why I choose Australia are:

1. Cost of Living : Australia’s standard of living is amongst the highest in the world. Living expenses and tuition costs are comparatively lower in Australia than in the United States and the United Kingdom. International students can work part-time while they study, allowing them to offset their living costs. There is also the possibility of scholarships which can help to lower the cost of studying in Australia for International students.

2. Diversity of Education: Institutions in Australia offer various courses and degrees, so international students can easily find the schools and fields that are right for them. Students can choose between universities, vocational education and English language training. 

3. Technology: One of the most appealing aspects of Australia is its technology and quality of scientific research. Australia is known for technology and innovations. Students studying in Australia are innovative and technical.

4. Multiculturalism: Studying in Australia provides quality education and a multicultural experience. This helps students to be familiar with the rest of the world’s language and culture.  

Apart from Australia, I researched other destinations such as Canada, UK and USA. However, various factors lead me to choose Australia. The cost of living in the USA and the UK is higher than in Australia. Canada is also one of the preferred destinations for higher education, but the processing is too long for a student visa. Also, Canada's year-round extreme cold climate made me exclude it from the list of study destinations for the interest of my subject. Alternatively, the climate of Australia is similar to that of Nepal.

Similarly, European countries are well known for quality education, but the high living cost and the need to learn their native language is the reason for not choosing Europe. Meanwhile, the teaching style of Australia varies from theirs. Thus, I am willing to excel in my career in Australia, which would help to achieve my goal. So I am motivated solely for my brighter upcoming career and objective. I am very excited to commence my education journey from Australia. Therefore, I choose to study in Australia for qualitative education in the hospitality industry.

Choosing an institution is an important decision for anyone’s career dreams. With around 43 universities in Australia, there were plenty of choices. I felt pretty tricky about choosing an appropriate institution because I had never travelled overseas and had no relatives in Australia. Thus, I did research based on my academic and interested courses in many Universities in Australia before selecting  [your chosen college] .

As a result, I chose [your chosen college] because of its course structure, fees, facilities, cost of living and so on. Then I concluded that [your chosen college] is most favourable for all those in terms of provided courses fee because I can complete my Bachelor in hospitality management within around AUD 48030 for three years which falls into my budget as well as this institution provides equal and best facilities like other ones.

Hospitality is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world today. Hotels, events, travel and tourism, luxury services, food services and other related segments fall under hospitality management. Among all these sectors, travel and tourism are the most significant contributors to the world economy. Hospitality management, as the name suggests, studies the hospitality industry.

Ever since I was young, I have remained attracted to the world of hospitality management. During my school days, I got a chance to visit different tourist sites. From there, an image was set up in my mind, and I started dreaming about being involved in tourism. Later completing my SLC (School leaving certificate) level exam, I immediately joined the +2 level in Management faculty with Hotel Management as my primary subject. During those 2 years of study, I gained knowledge and little idea about the scope and its importance in the context of Nepal. I felt that Nepal had not made significant progress as a naturally gifted country in the tourism sector. We have not yet utilized the resources in front of us due to the lack of manpower knowing about the tourist, tourism and hospitality. The growing popularity of the hospitality industry has made it a promising option for the career of students like me.

After graduating with a Bachelor of tourism and hospitality management, we can seek professional management positions in various tourism and hospitality operations. Some of them are:

Completing a Bachelor's isn’t the end of my educational journey. After completing my bachelor's degree in hospitality management and experiencing further knowledge in this field, I will return to my home country to fulfil my dreams of contributing to Nepal's hospitality and tourism industry. As mentioned above, the amount of tourists entering Nepal is increasing rapidly. Domestic tourism has also flourished rapidly. As per World Trade Organization (WTO) findings, one tourist creates jobs for 12 people directly or indirectly. The travel and tourism business has contributed to the Nepalese economy as a significant source of foreign currency earnings.

Firstly, I will work as a food and beverage manager or a front office manager in different star-level and chain-level hotels such as  Hyatt Regency Hotel, Crown Plaza Soaltee, Annapurna Hotel, Radisson Hotel and so on. I will also be offered a handsome salary range from (NRS 1 00,000- 1,50,000) per month, which is a good income for any Nepalese family depending upon the nature of the organization. I will have the potential to assume more responsibility that may enhance my knowledge and confidence to lunch out and bring much improvement in the field of hospitality management in Nepal by applying the knowledge and skills I learned during my study in Australia. After working for a few years and understanding the market strategy, I also dream of starting a hotel and travel agency with all the skills and experiences gained so far, and I’m sure as a result of my hard work, I will achieve my dream. I also have a responsibility towards my country and the society. Moreover, I am confident enough that studying in Australia will help me give international experience to customers and compete in the competitive business environment. And gradually, with the demand, I will be enlarging the investments in this hospitality sector.

As all my family members and relatives are in Nepal, I cannot just stay abroad, being far from them. As my parents are getting older daily, I must take care of them as a responsible son.

Last but not least, as a genuine and laborious student, I assure you that I will finish my intended course in the proposed duration under all the visa conditions and will return to my own country after the completion of my course and work in the field of hospitality applying the gained skills and knowledge. Instead of the usual good experiences and deep-rooted interests that lead many students to follow a certain academic path, a number of bad, sometimes terrible experiences have led me to want to follow a career in hospitality.

As a member of a successful school and college orchestra, I had the good fortune to travel around the UK and Europe, taking part in competitions and concerts. These often required overnight stays in hotels, and long hours spent in concert halls and theatres. Sadly, I can count the number of excellent experiences on one hand, whereas the bad experiences are numerous. It was these experiences that first ignited my interest in the hospitality and tourism industry, and this interest was further enhanced by the subsequent courses I took at college.

I could see how the little things made a big difference, and how good hospitality relied on good management, budgeting and service. To me, hospitality is not just serving breakfast on time, or accommodating requests from customers at the drop of a hat. It is about managing and training staff, ensuring the budget is spent in the right places and minimising the potential for mistakes. These are key factors to running a successful hospitality business in this ever-growing industry.

My part-time job at a local hotel and restaurant further reinforced this belief. I took on many roles, including cleaning, waitressing and helping out on reception, and this enabled me to see how the business worked from a number of angles. I found a major problem to be that senior staff were not aware of the academic and business side to hospitality, and this in turn led to inadequate service. Simple things like ensuring enough staff were available to cover demand for services (for example, bar tending or waitressing) or ensuring training was provided and encouraged for staff to grow and develop seemed to fall by the wayside on occasion. I have already deduced that this is not acceptable when trying to run a successful hospitality business, but I want to go further and learn how to rectify issues like these, and studying hospitality will help me to discover that.

I have been able to secure holiday employment at this hotel and restaurant, and hope to put what I learn at university into action during these periods. I also believe this will aid my learning, as I will be able to see and experience what I am studying, and use this to enhance my work at university.

I would like to pursue a career in hotel management, and my dream is to eventually own my own hotel. While this may seem a pipe dream, it is one I will continue to aim for, hopefully bolstered by a degree in this subject.

Ph.D. Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism

The Ph.D. degree in Hospitality, Hotel Management, and Tourism prepares students for a career as a university faculty member or research scientist in the private sector or a government agency. 

Program Details

  • Degree: Ph.D. Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism
  • Credit Hours: 66 hours of graduate classes minimum, plus other courses assigned by the student’s advisory committee

The Ph.D. degree prepares students for a career as a university faculty member or research scientist in a government agency or the private sector.

While each Ph.D. program is customized by the student and their advisor depending on the needs of the student, all Ph.D. students should take a minimum of 21 credits within the department  (not including HMGT 691 ).

Ph.D. Coursework should include:

  • Minimum of 3 credits quantitative statistics
  • Minimum of 3 credits qualitative statistics 
  • Minimum of 3 credits of research methods 
  • Minimum of 24 hours of HMGT/RPTS 691 (Research) 

Final degree plan MUST be approved by all members of their committee and should reflect the rigor expected of a doctoral degree. 

All students must pass a final comprehensive examination administered by their advisory committee. At the end of the semester in which the exam is given, there are no more than 6 hours of coursework remaining on the degree plan (except 681, 684, 690, 691, and 693).

E nānā i nā hoaaloha, kou ʻohana, nā kumu, nā kākoʻo i kōkua iā ʻoukou e hiki mai ma ʻaneʻi. Look at your friends, family, professors, and supporters that helped you to get here.

A laila, e hanu hohonu ihola mai ka naʻau mai. And then, take another deep breath and feel within yourself. Ua hoʻokō ʻia nā kuleana. Ua puka ʻoukou. You did it. You are graduating.

E alia iho! But wait. There is one final test. I want you to ask yourself if your academic journey has been upheld by our core values. The National Society of Leadership and Success

National Society of Leadership & Success

The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) is the nation’s largest leadership honor society and collegiate leadership development program. And the only program of its kind to have earned accreditation for its programming.

The NSLS differentiates itself from traditional honor societies in that students must complete a step-by-step leadership development program in order to become inducted. The curriculum offers students the opportunity to develop many in-demand skills such as leadership, communication, and team building.

Candidacy is determined by the local Chapter Leaders. For the Kapi‘olani Community College chapter, liberal arts students with a GPA between 2.5 and 3.49 are selected for nomination each fall and spring semester. Students who do not receive a formal invitation at the beginning of each semester may apply online through a nomination process, where-in faculty recommendation and brief personal statements are required.

After completing my secondary education, I pursued graduation from the (institution’s name) with (percentage) marks; it was in college that inculcated my interest in hospitality. Throughout my training and internship, I was able to gain more knowledge about hospitality functions and operations, including customer service, ala carte and buffet events, customer service, bar, kitchen and bakery and even catering services for various occasions. I was fortunate to participate in marketing campaigns and research for space selling and also event and theme party organization at hotels. I was also chosen to cater to several foreign delegates during my practical training, owing to my skills in hygiene and safety standards applications.  I have recently taken up a (duration) higher training and diploma in leadership management in hospitality at (name of the hotel). I have also come across the brochure and other materials of your institution throughout my working tenure and came to know how you are a leading global institution offering management degrees in the field. This was tantamount to fulfilling my dreams, and I could not believe how such tailor-made courses are readily available for professionals like me.  My desire to obtain a degree in hospitality management is not restricted to possessing a good employment opportunity. I dream of opening an exclusive hotel chain globally that can offer home-like comfort at a reasonable price away from home.  After I got to know about the degree in question, I checked for all eligibility criteria and then cleared IELTS with 7.0 bands and a minimum of 6.5 in every module. My academic record fulfills the criteria established for admission into the institutions and my parents are also willing to sponsor the costs of foreign education.
