Long Essay on Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Shopping (500 – 600 Words)

Introduction

Earlier people used to go to distant markets to buy necessary things. There was no other available option for shopping. But now with the changing time, we have changed our method of buying things. Nowadays, people have the option to choose whether they want to go to the market or the product will get delivered to their doorstep. Yes, this can be possible when you shop online.

Making use of the internet to buy products is called online shopping. In online shopping, we can shop anything by picking them from the virtual online stores and ordering them at our address. It is a simple and convenient mode of shopping.

Online Shopping: Brief History

After the emergence of smartphones and internet technology, online shopping came into existence. Initially, it was designed to promote and advertise the products of the companies. Later, it was made possible to exchange goods using the internet. In 1994, the first secure shopping channel was established. Flowers, wines, and chocolates were the initial products that were sold online. Later the online market flourished and wide varieties of products were made available.

In 1995, Amazon and eBay established its site for online shopping followed by Alibaba in 2003. Soon after, many other online shopping sites have made their place in the market.

Advantages/ Benefits of Online Shopping

Online shopping offers huge advantages to their customers. The dependency of people on online shopping is increasing day by day. During the days of the pandemic, online shopping was the savior of the time. Some of the major advantages of online shopping are as follows:

  • Flexibility: Online shopping is a flexible way of purchasing products. There is no time bound in an online market. Whenever you are free, you can scroll down for your favorite items and order them.
  • Big savings: You can save your fuel, energy, as well as the time when opting to online shopping. No need to move anywhere, just move your fingers.
  • Comparison: During online shopping, you can easily compare the prices of different products from different sites. While offline shopping, going to various shops to compare prices will be a hectic job.
  • Huge options: Unlike limited items in the physical shops, online stores are flooded with a wide variety of items. They offer a huge option to choose from.
  • Good deals: Online shopping sites throw various good deals to their customers. During any occasion or festive season, they offer discounts and low prices.

Disadvantages/ Cons of Online Shopping

No method can fully satisfy customers, and so the online method of shopping. For some people, it is a boon while some still fear shopping online. Some of the disadvantages of online shopping are listed below:

  • Security: The main fear people experience while shopping online is security. If not taken proper precautions, you can easily be the victim of online fraud. Payment and privacy are other concerns associated with the online market.
  • Satisfaction: Online shopping does not provide full customer satisfaction as you are not allowed to check the product physically. There are many chances of wrong product delivery.
  • Difficult to return: If you are not satisfied with the product, you can return them but the process is not that simple. Some sites do not even offer an exchange or return policy.
  • Delivery: While ordering anything online, it takes time to reach your destination. Therefore, you need to wait for some days to receive the product.
  • Bargaining: Offline markets are a good place for people who are experts in bargaining. In online stores, prices are fixed and you cannot deny them.

Today the number of people who shop online is comparatively high.  The growing trend of online shopping has turned many people towards purchasing things online. However, many still prefer to go to physical shops to buy things. Among online shopping and offline shopping, people can choose the way that suits them better.

Band 9 Essay Samples | Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Shopping

by Manjusha Nambiar · Published December 2, 2014 · Updated April 25, 2023

Nowadays online shopping becomes more popular than in-store shopping. Is it a positive or a negative development? Give your reasons and examples.

Now that we can buy just about anything with a few mouse clicks from the comfort of our home, very few people actually feel the need to venture into brick and mortar stores. There is no denying the fact that online shopping has become more popular than in-store shopping. This trend has both positive and negative aspects.

The huge popularity of online shopping can be attributed to the fact that it makes shopping easier. It saves both time and money. Buyers no longer have to drive all the way to shops to buy things. Also, online stores tend to offer attractive prices probably because they have lower overhead costs. This allows them to sell items for deeply discounted prices. This can lead to major cost benefits for shoppers. In addition, online shopping makes it easy to buy things from any part of the world. Even if an item is not available in your country, you can buy it from online stores. Online shopping also allows you to compare prices before hitting the purchase button.

On the flip side, the ease of online shopping has made many people compulsive shoppers. Most of us spend lots of time on the internet every day. And while we are on the internet, we get bombarded with numerous advertisements. For a compulsive shopper, this is a good reason to splurge. The fact that online shopping encourages us to buy things that we do not need or use cannot be denied. This can lead to debts. Also, there are security concerns. When you buy things online, you run a small risk of getting your financial information exploited by hackers. Of course, good anti-virus and anti-malware programs can offer a great deal of protection. But almost every week, we hear about data breaches at major online retailers.

To conclude, online shopping has several advantages and disadvantages. However, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Of course, the shopper has to exercise some common sense and keep their device free of malware if they want to enjoy the benefits of online shopping.

Seven (7) Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Shopping

Advantages and disadvantages Of online shopping: Information and Communication Technology has revolutionised the lifestyle and activities of individuals and organizations across the world. This is more pronounced in the area of commerce. Commercial activities have been redefined by technology. In years past, the physical  stores were the conventional places where goods and services could be purchased. However, this has changed with the emergence of online stores.  In today’s world, online stores have become the choice markets for shoppers.

There are many advantages which persons who buy goods and services on online stores enjoy. These advantages have been the motivation for the wide adoption of online shopping. On the other hand, there are risks and disadvantages associated with online shopping. Discussed below are the benefits, risks and disadvantages linked to online shopping.

Benefits, Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Shopping

Recommended: Benefits of technology in education today

Table of Contents

Advantages (Merits) of Online Shopping

1. Convenience: This is the greatest benefit of online shopping and its most significant allure. Unlike physical stores where there are usually long queues and delays in the selection of products, online stores give shoppers the chance to select the products of their choice with ease. Shoppers are able to place orders for products within minutes or even seconds.

Another aspect of the convenience which online shopping offers is its round-the-clock availability. Most physical shops lock up before the day runs out. On the contrary, online stores are open every hour of the day and night. Shoppers on online stores therefore enjoy the advantage of being able to make purchases at their most convenient time.

2. Best Prices: Online stores offer buyers a wide range of products. These products are usually sold at prices lower than those obtainable in physical stores. During holidays, festivals and other periods, online stores offer huge discounts, cash backs and coupons to shoppers. Online shops also engage in flash sales. All these give online shoppers the chance to buy products and services at the best prices.

Most online stores are virtual market places where manufacturers advertise and sell their products or offer their services. Shoppers on these stores can transact directly with the manufacturers and service providers. This eliminates the middleman and helps shoppers to save money.

Similarly, different vendors make their goods and services available on online stores. In order to beat the competition and attract more patronage, these vendors cut down on the prices of their products and services. Online shopping gives shoppers the huge advantage of purchasing goods and services at cheap or affordable prices.

3. Greater diversity and variety: Physical stores are limited in size and the variety of products they offer. This limits the choice of shoppers and their ability to access diverse set of products. On the other hand, online stores are not limited in size and usually contain limitless number, sizes and forms of products. This is a great benefit of online shopping. Online shoppers are able to buy everything they would love to buy.

In some cases, some goods may not be available in physical shops in a particular territory or country. This limits the ability of people within that territory or country to get products or services of their choice. However, online shopping removes this drawback. Shoppers from any part of the world can access online stores and pay for any product or service without limitations of any kind.

4. Privacy: Online shopping offers shoppers the advantage of making purchases in private space. Unlike physical stores, shoppers on online stores can buy any product or pay for any service without being seen by others. The privacy which online shopping offers is valuable to persons who feel embarrassed buying some kind of goods in a physical store. Online shopping enables everyone to enjoy privacy while buying.

Additionally, online shopping offers a sense of security due to the privacy it offers. Any one can buy luxury goods or spend huge amounts of money on the purchase of goods and services without fear of being exposed to the view of criminals.

5. Money, Time And Energy Cost: Online shopping helps shoppers save money, energy and time. In addition to the money which shoppers save as a result of discounts and low prices, they also save money on logistics. Transportation costs a lot of money and other resources. This is especially true for shopping outside the country of residence. By enabling shoppers to buy goods and services at any location, online shopping helps them save the money which would have been spent on transportation.

Similarly, online shopping helps shoppers save energy. Getting to a physical store and shopping in it requires a lot of energy. By enabling shoppers to shop at the comfort of their homes or offices, online shopping helps shoppers avoid stress and also conserve their energy. Online shopping also helps to save time by enabling shoppers to shop instantly and save time, which can be used for other activities.

6. Informed choice: Online shopping has a huge advantage of giving shoppers the opportunity to know the important details about a product or service before making a decision. Vendors usually attach pictures and descriptions to their products on online stores. This helps shoppers to know the important features and specifications of the product.

Moreover, most online stores have comment sections where shoppers who have bought a particular product can publish their experiences with the product and their opinions on the product and the vendor. This helps prospective buyers to know about the product and make an informed decision.

7. Avoid Uncomfortable Situations: In a conventional market, it’s common to get caught up in the crowd consisting of other people who also want to make purchases. For people who do not like crowds or dislike so much unnecessary body contact, it can get really uncomfortable. One can avoid all that by shopping online from the comfort of your home.

On the other hand, there is also the issue of seller pressure or influence. This is when the seller pressures a buyer to purchase an item, often by employing strong persuasion or enticing the buyer with promises or discount of low prices. This sometimes results in the buyer purchasing what he doesn’t really need. Most times, the seller persuades the buyer only because he want to make profits and not because he honestly thinks it’s a good choice for the buyer.

With online shopping, there is no such persuasion, and the buyer is able to make his choices without influence from any seller.

Disadvantages (Demerits) of Online Shopping

There are several benefits of online shopping which have already been discussed. However, there are risks involved in or associated with online shopping. They represent the risks, losses or detriment which may result from online shopping activities.

Merits and demerits of shopping online in 2021

1. Delays in Delivery: Products purchased on online stores are not made instantly available to shoppers. Such products would require shipping to the customer who paid for them. The shipping of the products usually takes a lot of time either as a result of distance or delay on the part of the shipping or logistics company. The delay in delivery may result in economic loss to the shopper.

2. Loss Or Damage of Goods : Products bought on online stores may be damaged or destroyed in the course of shipping or transportation to the shopper. This may be due to delay in the delivery, accident or negligence of the shipping or logistics company.

In other cases, the products bought on online stores may be lost in transit or delivered to the wrong address.

4. Inadequacy of Information: Although online stores display pictures of their products, the pictures may not accurately reflect the condition and features of the products. In most cases, the pictures are extensively enhanced and edited and this may deprive the shopper the knowledge of the true conditions of such products.

Also, the descriptions of the products may not adequately or accurately state the condition and features of the products. Some descriptions may be misleading or imprecise. In some cases, the descriptions not be sufficient to help the shopper evaluate the product. The description may be inadequate for ascertaining the texture, durability or quality of the product.

6. Lack Of Experience: There are some products which are better experienced before being bought. For example, it is more desirable to try out a clothe or feel a piece of furniture before buying them. Online stores do not offer shoppers the opportunity to test, inspect or touch their products before making their orders.

7. Increased Internet Time: This generation of technology users are already spending an excessive amount of screen time, and online shoot only makes this worse. IELTS Writing Task 2: Essay on online shopping/virtual shopping/e-shopping; with planning and model answer

This IELTS Writing Task 2 post is about ‘online shopping and its merits and demerits’ . Here, I’ve discussed the advantages and disadvantages of virtual/online/e-shopping and presented a model answer on this Task 2 question. This model answer can guide you to write an answer to any online shopping related essay.

Let’s have a look at the question we are going to discuss today.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Essay on online shopping/virtual shopping/e-shopping; with planning and model answer

The language of this task 2 question can be different in different exams.

Here’s another example of the same question:

An increasing number of people are buying what they need online.

What are the advantages and disadvantages for both individuals and companies to shopping online?

Nowadays, e-shopping or shopping online has an increasing trend among shoppers. It has both positive and negative sides. First, we need to make a plan for writing on this topic.

Here’s a short plan that may help you.

Planning and organisation:

Here is how I’ve planned the essay with a 4-paragraph structure:

  • Introduction: topic + thesis (2 sentences can be sufficient): Introduce the topic – ‘online shopping getting more popular’. Then write a thesis on how you are going to show that there are some positives and negatives of the issue.
  • Body paragraph on the reasons behind virtual shopping being so popular: You can write about straightforward ideas e.g. people get more convenience, and availability or choice of products. Give some real-life examples here.
  • Body paragraph on the negative sides of online shopping: Again, present some very general ideas e.g. customers get cheated and people become more isolated. Give some real-life examples here too
  • Conclusion: restate your ideas Online shopping has both advantages and disadvantages. You can give your personal opinion on how the disadvantages can be reduced.

Now let’s take a look at the model answer.

Model answer: expected band score – 7.5 to 8.0

In recent years, the rate of in-store shopping has plunged due to vast opportunities for buying different products including daily necessaries from hundreds of online stores. This essay will try to demonstrate chances such as convenience and product availability as the reasons behind the popularity of e-shopping whereas it will focus on swindling and isolation as the pitfalls of this issue.

Initially, the prime reason behind the popularity of e-shopping is convenience which can be easily understood from the thousands of virtual shops all over the world. To illustrate, people nowadays are busier than ever because of the fast pace of the world and they want to save as much time as they can for relaxation. Virtual shopping gives this magnificent prospect of time-saving and so people enjoy taking it. Besides, superstores sometimes run out of products in the precise moment when people need them which online shops rarely have this crisis. For instance, I needed a flat-screen monitor a few months ago but my local store had it out of stock. When I peeped into some online stores I found it easily on eBay.

Meanwhile, though shopping on the internet looks very promising, it is not without its setbacks. Many people, mostly the newcomers, regularly complain of getting tricked on virtual shopping and the rate of complaints is increasing at a faster rate. To explain, one of my friends has recently got swindled when he paid in advance for a smartwatch. Additionally, people often become isolated in their rooms through e-shopping which can affect their feelings and behaviour. As an example, a friend of mine started shopping online a couple of years ago even though the nearest superstore was only 500 metres away. His neighbours, nowadays, describe him as an ill-mannered and antisocial person which, needless to say, is the result of being home and becoming isolated from the outer world.

In brief, virtual shoppers obtain greater benefits if compared to in-store shoppers. Converting such shopping to a stress-free experience, it is turning out to be progressively more convenient. However, as clients may sometimes get deceived and become cut off from the social world, concerned authorities should look into the matter cautiously. (360 words)

Here are some other Task 2 questions which can be answered taking help from the given essay example on online shopping:

  • Some people support online shopping because it is convenient, while others argue that shopping on the internet poses threats. Discuss both views and give your opinions.
  • Nowadays on-line shopping has become more popular than in-store shopping. Is it a positive or a negative development?
  • Nowadays many people go shopping in their free time. Shopping has replaced many other activities that people used to choose as their hobby. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or negative development?
If you have written any answer to this question, you can post it in the comment box and we can discuss about it in details.

Sample Essay

Despite knowing what time it is on the clock or what the weather is outside or there is a pandemic, we can conveniently buy things that we want from online stores. Very few people feel the need to venture into the stores. There is no denying that online shopping has become more popular and less tiring than in-store shopping. This trend has positive and negative aspects, which are discussed in the following essay.

On the one hand, the online shopping brings in more benefits than in-store shopping. Firstly, it saves time for both buyers and sellers as buyers do not have to travel and sellers need not show their goods one by one to every consumer. Further, they can get a perfect knock-off on the prices and easily compare the products before hitting the purchase button, leading to significant cost benefits for shoppers. In this manner, people can make more sensible decisions after evaluating and considering the price, size, and models. Moreover, it enables them to shop easily from any part of the world.

On the other hand, shopping online does not enable to touch or see the product, in reality, making it hard to examine the quality of the product resulting in purchasing the product of poor quality and sometimes impossible to return or exchange the product, which in turn leads to squandering the money. Another concerning thing is that shopping online has made people compulsive shoppers. Furthermore, there is always a risk of getting financial information to be exploited by hackers for security reasons as there is always news of data breaches even from renowned brands and sites.

On a final note, I would say that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of online shopping. Still, one must be careful of fraud and misrepresentation while buying from different websites.

The Pros and Cons of Online Shopping

6 Benefits and Drawbacks To Keep in Mind When You Shop Online

Pros of Online Shopping

Cons of online shopping, how to make the most of online shopping, money-saving tips for online shopping, frequently asked questions (faqs).

The Balance / Jiaqi Zhou

Online shopping is more popular today than ever before. A report from the U.S. Census Bureau found that in the first quarter of 2022, an estimated $250 billion was spent in retail e-commerce sales. In the second quarter of 2011, for comparison, retail e-commerce sales were $47.5 billion.

Due in part to new and growing technology, online shopping has become incredibly easy and convenient. It also offers a greater selection than one storefront, opening the doors to products and services that may not be available at a nearby brick-and-mortar store .

While online shopping comes with a number of benefits, there are drawbacks to know about, too. Let's dive deeper into the pros and cons of shopping online.

Key Takeaways

  • Online shopping is convenient and offers a variety of products you may not be able to find at your local stores.
  • It's easier to comparison shop online, where you can access prices, reviews, and product details with a click.
  • When you shop online, you need to wait for your product to be delivered to you, and you might spend more than you would if you went to a brick-and-mortar store.
  • There's also a risk of fraud when you shop online, which you can combat by choosing trusted stores and paying with a card that offers fraud protection.

Convenience

Greater selection

Easy access to information

Can be more expensive

Increases risk of fraud

Leads to longer wait times

Using your computer or another digital device for your shopping needs can be convenient, offer more options, and provide insight you might not find in person at a store.

The greatest benefit of online shopping is its convenience. Through the digital space, you can buy anything you want from the comfort of your own home. Since online stores are open 24/7 and accessible from anywhere with internet access, it's easy to fit online shopping into your life no matter how busy you are. You don't have to plan your purchases based on when a brick-and-mortar store is open and available to serve you.

Greater Selection

Because products online live within the digital space, online retailers are not restricted to shelves and often have more inventory on hand with a wider selection of products. Also, online shopping gives you the chance to buy anything from any retailer, no matter where you're located. If you're in the market for a new lamp, for example, you'll have more options available to you than you would if you only shopped at stores in your local area.

Easy Access to Information

When shopping online, you will often find more details about a business's products than you would get in physical stores. Instead of speaking to one or two sales associates in person, you can peruse product descriptions, recommendations of similar products, and reviews from other shoppers online that may help you make a more informed purchasing decision.

Online retailers also tend to have membership options, typically via email or newsletters, that give shoppers early access to sales, seasonal releases , and other events. This way, you can be one of the first to know of offerings from your favorite brands.

Shopping for items online can also have its pitfalls, including hidden price mark-ups, an increased risk of fraud, and the inability to use or wear the item you purchased right away.

Can Be More Expensive

Online purchases can cost you more for several reasons. Even though many major online retailers offer free shipping, they generally require you to meet a minimum to qualify for it. In addition, online retailers may use several strategies to encourage you to buy more items or more expensive items than if you were shopping in person.

Depending on the state you live in, you may be required to pay an internet sales tax , too. In Texas, for example, you may have to pay a tax on out-of-state purchases delivered into Texas or purchases made from online-only sellers.

Many online retailers take part in digital tactics to convince shoppers to make more purchases, often considered impulse buys . Some include using "limited time" sale pop-ups that reset every time users reload the page, fake customer testimonials, or messages that promote higher-cost items.

Increases Risk of Fraud

Unfortunately, online shopping scams do exist. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), online shopping was the fourth most common fraud category for consumers as of February 2022. Some scammers pretend to be legitimate online sellers with fake websites or create fake ads on real sites.

Always pay by credit card rather than a debit card, as you can easily report fraud to your credit card company. Also, it is best to avoid online sellers that only accept payment via money transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Scammers may encourage you to pay through these methods so they can access your money faster.

Leads to Longer Wait Times

When you shop at a brick-and-mortar store, you can walk away with the product you bought and use or wear it right away. Online shopping forces you to wait days, weeks, or even longer for your order to arrive. If you're in a time crunch and need a product right away, such as a gift, going to an in-person shop may be a better option for you.

These tips can allow you to enhance your online shopping experience.

Know Which Products To Buy Online

Some items are better to buy online than others because you can find countless consumer reviews, discounts, or other deals pertaining to them. For items you regularly use (such as a laptop, phone charger, luggage, or textbook), the internet may be the best place to compare offers. For things you require to have long-lasting value (like a car) or must get right away (such as groceries), shopping in person may be best.

Read Reviews

Before you check out, read reviews on the retailer's website as well as third-party sites like Google and Facebook. This can help you find out if the retailer is legitimate and whether there may be any potential issues with the product you're about to invest in. Reviews are beneficial for small businesses , too. Ninety-eight percent of consumers read online reviews of local businesses, according to marketing consultancy BrightLocal's 2022 Local Consumer Review Survey.

Some companies have more nuanced review options than others. Clothing rental service Nuuly, for example, lets its customers add photos of themselves wearing products with written reviews, enabling future customers to make empowered, smart purchasing decisions.

Examine Product Details

If you’re interested in a product, read its description. Make sure you know what it’s made out of, whether it comes with a warranty, what sizes are available, and so on. By doing so, you can avoid unwanted surprises that cost you time, money, and headaches when the product arrives.

There are many ways to save some money while making online purchases. Consider these tips to improve your online shopping experience.

Comparison Shop

If you have a specific product in mind, it's in your best interest to comparison shop, similar to how you would when looking for life insurance. Look at various online stores that offer what you want. Then, compare prices so you can find the best deal.

As you comparison shop, read product descriptions very closely. The FTC recommends looking out for words like "refurbished" or "vintage," as this could mean a product will arrive at your door in less-than-perfect condition.

Follow Online Retailers on Social Media

Online retailers often promote their sales and discounted items on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media channels. If you follow some of your favorite companies on social media, you may be one of the first to see and purchase the latest offers.

Use Money-Saving Apps or Plug-ins

There is no shortage of apps or plug-ins that can allow you to save money online without the hassle. Some examples are Honey, Swagbucks, Capital One Shopping, and Rakuten. You can also look for coupon codes online on sites like RetailMeNot.com and Coupons.com.

How do you get your money back from an online purchase?

This process varies by retailer. Some may automatically refund your money when you report a problem with your purchase; others may require you to return the product first. You may not be able to get your money back at all, especially if it's after the retailer's return window. If you're buying something that may not work for you, like clothing, check the retailer's refund policy before you buy.

How has the internet changed shopping?

The internet has completely changed the shopping experience. People have access to products from around the globe. Payments are instant, and recommendations are tailored to your shopping and browsing habits. Brick-and-mortar retailers have had to respond by launching websites and improving their in-person customer experience.

Essay on Online Shopping Advantages and Disadvantages

Essay on online shopping for students and children . In this article, ‘ Online Shopping Essay ‘ students will read the meaning , advantages and disadvantages of online shopping . A Paragraph on precautions during online shopping must be understood carefully to escape online fraud.

Meaning of Online Shopping

In our childhood stories, we were told that Santa used to deliver gifts to kids to fulfil their wishes. Nobody imagined that this could happen in real life also. But modern science has made it possible in today’s world. This is known by various names like digital shopping, online shopping, e-commerce, online purchasing, internet shopping etc. It is exactly like our routine shopping except that here the buyer does not visit the shopkeeper’s place. Rather the full store is sent to the buyer on his laptop or mobile phone through a website .

History of Online Shopping

The first secure online transaction was done in the year 1994. Immediately after that in 1995 Amazon and e-bay launched their shopping sites. Amazon.com, e-bay, Flipkart, Paytm Mall, Snapdeal, Myntra, Jabong.com, Bigbasket.com, Urbanclap, and Yebhi.com are the names of famous online shopping portals. With the availability of smartphones and cheaper internet packages, online shopping has taken a place in everyone’s life.

What Can You Buy Online

A large number of people buy almost everything from groceries to gold on the internet. One needs just basic knowledge to operate a cell phone and he/she can enjoy shopping while sitting at home. Earlier people were afraid of losing their money for paying for an article that they were not viewing physically. But the option of cash on delivery has done away with that fear. An option of EMI (equated monthly instalments) that is to pay in smaller instalments is also available at most of the shopping sites. People who can’t pay the full price of the product in one go can still buy the product through an online EMI scheme. Besides buying goods we can buy online services also. For example, the services of beauticians, plumbers, electricians, and home-maids can also be arranged online through various sites. It is so easy that even kids can shop online.

Online Shopping by Mobile Apps

Nowadays all the e-commerce sites have launched their mobile apps to make it even easier. Open the app, click on the items that you wish to buy and proceed to checkout and shopping is done. The day and date of delivery will be mentioned there. The most interesting part is that change and return options are also available here like our physical shopping. With each and every passing day, more buyers are getting attracted to online purchasing because it has a long list of benefits.

Advantages Of Online Shopping | Pros of Online Shopping

  • gives access to a wide variety of products, prices and features compared with similar products.
  • saves time and we can devote our time towards more productive causes.
  • saves fuel and becomes the reason for less pollution and traffic jam.
  • We need not wait for our weekly off because online stores are 24 hours open.
  • We can read the reviews of a product if there is any doubt regarding its quality.
  • Goods are relatively cheaper at online stores because their maintenance expenses are almost negligible.
  • Online shopping companies offer their customers ample deals to sell their products like offering cash backs, lucky draws, festive sales, huge discounts and whatnot!
  • Big celebrities are often seen doing advertisements on these shopping sites to attract customers.
  • The buyer can choose from the goods and services available on the website and get them delivered directly to his/her place after making the payment. Or one can choose ‘the cash-on-delivery (COD) option.
  • People can buy in the wee hours, that is, even after midnight.

There are many advantages of online shopping but as every coin has two sides, online shopping is no exception. It has some disadvantages also, which are discussed below:

Disadvantages of Online Shopping | Cons of Online Shopping

A few people might experience the following disadvantages of online shopping which spoil their fun and comfort of online shopping. But, certain precautions and vigilant behaviour are a prerequisite to fully exploring the horizon of internet shopping.

  • Cases of delivering damaged products are reported.
  • Shipping problems delayed deliveries and high delivery charges
  • fraudulent payments and hacking of personal information
  • No salesperson to help while selecting
  • Online buying does not let small and local shopkeepers come on upfront. Big business houses are taking away their portion of sales through online buying.

Precautions Before Online Shopping

By following certain precautionary steps one can avoid these disadvantages of online shopping. Always buy from trusted websites, read reviews and users’ comments from various sites, and read product features and return policies thoroughly. It is evident now that the positive side overshadows the negative side. Happy online shopping.

20 Pros and Cons of Shopping Online

Find great deals online, but be safe about it

  • The Ultimate Guide to Skype

There are tons of online shopping sites where you can buy everything from plane tickets and flat-screen TVs to food, clothes, furniture, office supplies, movies, and lots more. While shopping online is convenient and fun, there are some disadvantages. Know the cons to realize the benefits of shopping at a traditional store.

The Pros of Shopping Online

There are, of course, distinct advantages of online shopping:

Time Convenience

In comparison to a brick-and-mortar store with fixed hours, online shopping venues are available any time, day or night. This is especially useful for parents with small children, anyone who works throughout the day, and during times of inclement weather.

Shopping Apps

Shopping from an app is a convenient luxury. Whether you're homebound or able to visit a store, shopping from your phone is a uniquely awesome experience.

Price Comparisons

When you visit a store, you most likely settle for whatever price the vendor has placed on a particular item. With online shopping, you can compare prices from hundreds of different vendors. Grocery store price comparison apps are a great option if you're not interested in doing this manually.

Discounts and Notifications

Online stores want to keep you as a customer, so they may offer deep discounts, rewards, and cash back if you sign up for their newsletters. This can keep you updated on all the best upcoming sales. Coupon codes—like the ones you can get from coupon code sites —are also extremely popular when shopping online.

Infinite Choice

Shelf space in a physical store is limited, which means the variety of goods is limited. This isn't true with online stores, where choices are abundant. If you don't see what you want at one store online, move on to the next one. As the consumer, you have the power to do that.

No Size Limitation

Another benefit is when the product you want to buy is too big to haul in your vehicle. Buying a boat from an auction site or ordering a tiny home online are just two examples of situations where your car just won't do the job.

Private Shopping

Ordering online is the preferred way to get something discreetly. Nobody has to see what you're filling your cart with, and some places even offer inconspicuous packaging so your delivery person is also none the wiser.

Zero Parking Struggles

Finding a parking spot can be a big reason you don't stop at a store. Especially around the holidays, there's a major benefit of no congestion when shopping online. When it's really busy, you might not even remember where you parked your car !

Home Delivery for the Disabled

Buying oversized items and not having to worry about parking are benefits everyone can take advantage of, but if you're physically disabled to the point that you can't drive or walk through a store, online shopping might be your only solution to ordering food, essential items, and other goods.

Easy Access to Consumer Reviews

It's easy to access consumer reviews for pretty much any product you can think of online, which makes for informed purchases. If you're not sure if you're up to buying something, conduct a little research by checking out customer reviews.

No Pressure Sales

If you don't want to experience awkward approaches by eager salespeople, you don't have to put up with that online. While you could consider pop-up ads a similar experience, they're a bit easier to suppress. Car auction websites are a great example of this.

Fewer Impulse Buys

This one depends on your shopping habits. If you find it easier to buy things you see in passing as you walk through a store's aisles, online shopping could save you money and even help you make healthier choices.

More Payment Methods

Another benefit of online shopping is that you can pay for things differently than you can at a physical store. Some retailers support PayPal, Bitcoin, or zero-interest payment plans, for example.

The Cons of Shopping Online

Here are a few disadvantages of internet shopping that might deter you from making your next purchase online:

No Inspection Ability

Things you order online could be larger or smaller than how they appear in the pictures, or the measurements listed for the product could have been written down incorrectly. And when you buy clothes online, you can't feel the material, see how it fits around your waist, or notice how it's made. Most online stores make it easy to return items for this reason.

Can't Always Talk to Someone Immediately

If you have a question about what you're about to order, or what you just ordered, you can't just walk up to an employee. You might instead have to wait a full day or longer to get your question answered. This situation is improving, however, as many sites have added an instant chat service or automated bot-answering screen to address concerns and answer questions on the spot.

Must Wait for Delivery

Need something no later than this afternoon? Not many online shopping sites have same-day delivery, and none of them offer the on-the-spot, take-home advantage that a physical store does. Some online shopping sites take weeks to deliver your order (though, they're in the minority).

Shipping Problems

You're more likely to have your package arrive broken, wet, melted, etc., or not arrive at all, when you're not the one who picked it up yourself. Even packages that do arrive could sit outside long enough for theft to occur.

Shipping Costs

Depending on what you buy, you could spend the same amount on just shipping costs, or sometimes even more. In-store shopping has no need to charge extra for shipping. Plus, depending on where you live, you might pay a bit more due to special taxes for online shopping.

Privacy and Security

Privacy and security are legitimate concerns for any online shopper. Your payment information could get stolen from the site, or someone who works there could copy your bank details and use them later on their own purchases. It's also hard to immediately recognize whether an online store is real or just there to scam you.

There are precautions you can take when shopping online to make the experience more secure. For example, pay attention to whether the site uses HTTPS , and protect your online accounts with secure, but different , passwords.

Legality Concerns

While this isn't a widespread problem, you could accidentally buy something that's illegal where you live. The product might very well be available from the website you're on, but it could also be illegal to order in your area. It's much easier for a website to offer these kinds of products than a store because websites can be created quickly and hosted all over the world with less oversight or concern for international shoppers.

Online Shopping Advantages and Disadvantages essay 150 Words

Online shopping is like a huge store on the internet where you can find almost anything! Imagine sitting at home and getting new games, clothes, or your favorite snacks with just a few clicks. It’s so convenient because you don’t need to go out, stand in long lines, or carry heavy bags. You can even shop in your favorite superhero costume if you want.

But, like everything, online shopping has some not so fun parts. Sometimes, the toys or clothes you see online might look different when they arrive. The colors could be off, or they might not be as big or small as you thought. Plus, waiting for your things to arrive can feel like forever, especially if you’re really excited.

Also, it’s important to shop with a grownup. The internet is a big place, and not all online shops are safe or friendly. A grownup can help make sure that you’re buying from good places and that your toys or clothes are just right for you.

Online Shopping Advantages and Disadvantages essay 200 Words

Online shopping is like having a magic wand that brings things to your door. You can find almost everything, from toys and books to clothes, with just a few clicks. It’s really handy, especially on rainy or super hot days when going out is tough. You can even shop in your cozy bed! The internet is open all the time, so you can shop early in the morning or late at night.

But, like in fairy tales, there are some tricky bits too. Pictures on the internet can be different from real life. That cool toy might not be as big as it looks online. Also, things you buy take time to reach you. It’s not like in stores where you get them right away. Sometimes, the wait can seem really long, especially if you are waiting for something special.

It’s also super important to shop with an adult, like mom, dad, or a teacher. The internet is a big place with lots of stores, and not all of them are good places for kids. Grownups can help you find the right places to shop and make sure what you’re buying is safe and just what you wanted.

Online Shopping Advantages and Disadvantages essay 300 Words

Online shopping is like a treasure chest that you can open right from your computer or phone. You just click a few buttons and, like magic, things start coming to your house! It’s great for days when it’s too cold or too hot to go outside, or when you just want to stay comfy at home.

One of the neatest things about online shopping is the surprises. You can find stuff that might not be in your local store. Like a rare dinosaur toy or a book about planets that glow in the dark! And, you can be a little detective, looking at different websites to find the best toy at the best price.

But, remember, every adventure has its challenges. The pictures online can be a bit tricky. Sometimes, the stuff looks different when it arrives. That robot might be smaller than it looked online, or the color of the tshirt might be different. And, the waiting part can be hard. It takes time for things to travel to your house, unlike in a store where you can take them home right away.

Also, it’s really important to have an adult with you when you’re shopping online. The internet is huge and not every place is good for kids. A grownup can help make sure the website is safe and that what you’re buying is just right.

Online shopping is a bit like going on an exciting quest from your home, it’s always best to have a grownup guide. They can help you navigate this big online world and make sure your shopping adventure is both safe and fun!

In the end, online shopping can be a fun and easy way to buy things, but it’s always best to have a grownup around to help make sure everything goes just right. It’s like having a shopping buddy who knows a lot about the internet world!

Online Shopping Advantages and Disadvantages essay 400 Words

1. Introduction to Online Shopping: Navigating the Digital Marketplace

In today’s world, shopping has taken an exciting turn with the rise of online shopping. Imagine a huge digital marketplace, where you can find almost anything you need or want, from a tiny pencil to a big bicycle, without ever leaving your house.

This is what online shopping offers – a convenient way to browse, compare, and purchase items from the comfort of your home. With just a few clicks or taps, you can explore a world of endless possibilities. This digital marketplace is open 24/7, so you can shop anytime, whether it’s early in the morning or late at night. It’s like having a personal mall at your fingertips, where you can visit hundreds of stores in just a few minutes.

2. The Rise of ECommerce: A Global Shopping Revolution

ECommerce, or electronic commerce, has transformed the way we shop and sell. This global shopping revolution began in the late 20th century and has grown rapidly with the spread of the internet.

In recent years, more and more people around the world are enjoying the benefits of shopping online. In fact, a report from 2023 showed that over 2 billion people made online purchases, and e retail sales surpassed 4.2 trillion U.S. dollars globally.

This massive growth is not just about buying things; it’s about the convenience, variety, and the freedom to shop from anywhere, at any time. 1. Shipping and Delivery Issues:

Extended Waiting Times : Experience the anticipation as products take days or weeks to arrive, potentially including extra delivery fees. Risks in Transit : Face the uncertainty of items being lost, damaged, or delayed, turning eagerly awaited packages into sources of frustration. Delivery Limitations: Recognize that not all locations enjoy the same level of delivery service, which can diminish the appeal of online shopping for some.

2.  Security Concerns:

Cyber Threats: Stay vigilant against identity theft, phishing scams, and credit card fraud that can compromise your online safety. Preventive Measures: Ensure the use of secure websites and routinely monitor bank statements to guard against unauthorized transactions.

3. Trying Things Out:

Can’t Touch or Try: Learn that when you shop online, you can’t touch, try on, or test things like clothes, smells, or gadgets before you buy them. Guessing Game: Understand that not being able to check things out first can make it hard to know if they’re just right, like if a dress will fit or feel nice. Surprises in the Mail: Find out that sometimes what looks good online might not be what you expected, which can be a bit disappointing and mean you might have to send things back.

Online vs. Offline Shopping: A Simple Comparison

After all this discussion let’s find out how each way has its own special features. Let’s compare them in simple terms:

1. Shopping Time

Online: Shop any time, day or night. Offline: Shop only when the store is open.

2. Trying Before Buying

Online: You can’t try things before buying. Offline: You can try clothes, smell perfumes, or check gadgets right away.

3. Getting Your Items

Online: Wait for items to be delivered to your house. Offline: Take your items home with you immediately.

4. Variety of Choices

Online: Find almost anything you can think of. Offline: Limited to what’s in stock at the store.

5. Deals and Prices

Online: Easy to compare prices and find online deals. Offline: What you see is what you get, with occasional in-store sales.

6. Safety and Security

Online: Need to be careful with personal and payment information. Offline: Just pay at the counter, less worry about online data theft.

7. Fun and Social

Online: Shop alone, from your device. Offline: Can be a fun outing with friends or family.

So, both ways of shopping are good for different things. Online shopping is easy and has lots of choices, but you have to wait and be careful. Shopping in a store is instant and you can see what you’re getting, but it might not have as many options.

7. The Future of Online Shopping: Trends and Innovations

The future of online shopping looks really bright. The following points suggest a promising and dynamic future for online shopping, marked by convenience, sustainability, and technological innovation.

1. Technology Integration: With advancements like augmented reality, shoppers can visualize products in their real-life environment before making a purchase, reducing uncertainty and enhancing the shopping experience. 2. Eco-Friendly Practices: As online retailers adopt more sustainable practices, such as using recyclable materials and optimizing delivery routes to reduce carbon emissions, shopping online becomes more appealing to environmentally conscious consumers. 3. Convenience Through AI: Voice-activated assistants and AI-driven recommendations can make shopping more convenient and personalized, saving time and improving product discovery. 4. Global Accessibility: Improvements in logistics and payment systems are making it easier for people around the world to shop online, broadening the market and access to products. 5. Consumer Behavior Shift: With more people getting comfortable with technology and prioritizing convenience, the demand for online shopping is expected to grow, driving further innovations and improvements in the sector.

Online shopping

The activity of buying and selling is as old as communities. People exchanged each other’s goods till the concept of money was introduced. With the introduction of money appeared the process of shopping. People then exchanged goods for gold or silver coins. Later, paper money was used instead of gold and silver. With the development of communities and their economical systems, new forms of marketing appeared to facilitate the process of shopping.

Credit cards, bank accounts and world trading concept along with the massive development in the internet world made shopping online very easy and popular.

Using your mobile phone while having a cup of coffee in Kuwait, you can pickup a pair of sandals on the Chinese website Alibaba, pay with your MasterCard, track your shipment on Aramex and receive your item within a week delivered to your home.

This form of shopping is revolutionary as it changes the whole concept of shopping dramatically. ‘The global retail eCommerce sales have increased 0.52 trillion US dollars only in a two-year period from 2014 to 2016.’ (MAGEPLAZA, 2019)

In the following pages, the writer will discuss this new form of shopping, shed light on its history, highlight its merits and demerits, and give some recommendations on how to improve it.

Background and history

According to Kenny (2018), online shopping goes back to 1981 with Thomson holidays from the UK when first business to business transaction was made. In the following year, Mintel ‘was used to make online purchases, book train tickets, chat, check stock prices etc.’ Kenny (2018). It took about a decade when in 1991, the two e-commerce giants Amazon and eBay were born. They represented the first commercialized e-commerce. Amazon started selling books online and Pierre Omidyar founded eBay. Ever since then, the e-commerce burst and there are hundreds of online stores now which sell everything.

How it works

Almost all online shopping sites work in the same way. They provide a platform by which customers can surf the goods they are interested in. Once the customer likes something, heshe can add it to the shipping cart. The shipping cart pretty much works like the real one in a market. However, it has more options. The customer can add, delete or modify to the shopping list of the shipping cart any time. Then the customer proceeds to the payment. Here heshe provides his name, address and credit card information. Once the customer pays for his cart, an automatic recite is sent to his email which confirms the payment. Another copy of that recite is sent to the store which is supposed to prepare the goods for delivery to the shipping address provided by the customer. (MAGEPLAZA, 2019)

Arab shopping applications

OUNASS is an online shopping application that sells clothing, shoes, bags, accessories and fine jewellery of luxury brands like Gucci, Valentino, Balenciaga and Prada. Ounass was launched in 2016 as Al Tayer Group’s first, exclusively digital, luxury e-commerce site. The application targets customers of the Middle East and is based in the new capital of fashion- Dubai. According to the policy of the owners, if you live in Dubai and make a purchase, delivery is guaranteed within two hours. The company also guarantees express delivery to the GCC countries. The application is quite popular as it was downloaded from the Play Store of Android more than 100 thousand times.

Carriage is an application of online food ordering and delivery in Kuwait and Bahrain. The application provides the food menu of over 200 restaurants of different cuisines, which customers can surf to pick up their favourite meals, snacks, desserts or drinks. The average delivery time of the orders according to the application is 40 minutes. The application also provides the ability to track the delivery of orders. After placing the order, the customer has the option to pay for the order by cash, debit or credit card.

Advantages of online shopping

There are a lot of advantages of online shopping. The first one is that figures show that it is very successful. Money transactions related to online shopping is vast and growing. The second advantage is that online shopping saves a lot of time and energy. One can buy whatever heshe likes in a matter of minutes. Instead of wasting time moving from a shop to another looking for a good pair of shoes or a nice T-shirt for the party, you can surf hundreds of products, compare models and price while enjoining a cup of coffee on your couch.

Another advantage is that online shopping is financially good for both customers and merchants. On one side, when it comes to merchants, on line shopping reduces the cost. No need to rent showrooms which are very costy. The virtual showroom on the website almost costs nothing. Another issue is the reduce of staff which means less salaries and social security and health care payments. These cuts in expenses drop the prices and increase the profit for the merchant. On the other side, these cuts also work in favour of the customer as prices go down.

Online shopping also provides working chances for a lot of individuals and companies. Many contracting parties benefit from an online shopping website. These include but limited to: programmers, advertising companies, credit card companies, delivery companies and the goods sellers or stores. Online shopping also paves the way to individuals to start their own projects with very little capital.

Disadvantages of online shopping

Despite the big advantages of online shopping, there are a few disadvantages had emerged. The first one is the threat of unemployment. A single online website means that tens of employees are replaced by a program.

Online shopping can also be harmful to local markets. Instead of buying local stuff -which is good for the economy of the country- customers import goods from other countries which is harmful to the economy.

Another important issue is that online shopping encourages bad habits of consuming. It makes the process of buying too easy that people may buy what they don’t need. People usually don’t feel they pay ‘real money’ when they pay using their credit cards. This may result in future financial issues to individuals and families.

Online shopping also means less exercise done by people. Doing shopping the usual way means you have to go to the market, walk to pick up what you need and carry bags back home. This is a kind of sport that is lost when you buy your stuff online.

There is also a problem of socializing that is related with online shopping. When shopping the traditional way, people usually go with their family or friends. Customers interact with each others and with merchants. Online shopping is an interaction between a ‘lonely individual’ and the smartphone screen!

Another disadvantage is that online shopping can be disappointing. What you see is not necessary what you get. Photos can be deceptive. Merchants may lie or cheat about their goods.

One important thing is the threat of hacking. Despite the security measures of banks and credit card companies, this problem takes place from time to time. Personal information and banking account information are subject to hacking.

There’s no doubt that online shopping has facilitated our life a lot. It has many advantages and some disadvantages. In order to overcome the advantages, people may incorporate the two types of shopping, traditional shopping and online shopping. This is to guarantee that people don’t come too idle or unsocial. Extra security measures also must be taken to fight fraud.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of online shopping and how to improve electronic stores in the future?

Introduction

In the first wave of e-commerce businesses witnessed new start-ups creating diverse business models and pioneering into new markets. This created a race between the brick and mortar and the new internet .com businesses trying to dominate market presence in the new virtual economy. The wave of optimism, however, did not last long as Companies fought over market share and pondered their survival in this new market. The Second wave of e-commerce has seen an expansion in the sophistication of technology and use of communications.

The major difference between the first and second waves was the sophistication of the internet and communications technology. There has been a shift in the dynamics too as in the second wave we are moving away from transaction based business to more of customer relationship management . The advent of M-Commerce has seen this technology accelerate to the use of mobile hand held devices connecting through an array of wireless networks connected to powerful and sophisticated servers.

E-Commerce can best be defined as computer medium that facilitates online shopping and trading via the internet.  Essentially an electronic means of searching for and purchasing goods online via a computer terminal connected to the internet.

E-Commerce or online retail shopping has revolutionized the way we go about researching and purchasing or household and personal goods.  It is an irreversible trend associated with technological development in a consumer based society.  The question remains on how secure this method is and how invasive it becomes in our private life?

There is a large and diverse literature base that covers the merits and demerits of online and electronic shopping ( e-commerce). A good introduction is provided  in the text ‘E Commerce’ by Mamta Bhusry where all of the basics of the subject are covered including that of computer technology, security, infrastructure and an understanding of the legal requirements in e-commerce. (M.Bhusry, 2005).  There are a number of texts that review online shopping from that of the approach taken by the retailers to that of concerns for the online shopper who is new to this form of trading.  (Esterline, 2006).  The concept of globalization and online shopping has become an important feature. Sites like e-bay mean you can bid for products in different countries and have them despatched direct to your home.  (Dholakia, 2002).  As this is a technology based industry it is difficult to say how the future trends and direction of this business will develop. (Zhou, 2004).

Challenges for the e-business – adoption of e-commerce

There are significant challenges that a business must face in the adoption of e-business. We explore some of the Critical Success Factors (CSF’s) that are considered essential for a successful outcome. The CSF’s for the adoption of e-business initiatives span across three main areas: (1) Strategic Factors (2) Structural Factors and (3) Management Oriented Factors.  The table below illustrates the type of CSF’s that need to be managed (Dubelaar, 2005).

A study carried out by Chris Dubelarr of Bond University stated that the main issues related to that of leadership qualities, ineffective solutions design and operational impediments. (Dubelaar, 2005).  A number of research studies have been carried out on the importance of determining the CSF’s for B2C applications, one survey concluded that the most important considerations are that of  quick response times on products and services, flexibility and enhanced customer services.   (Jamil & Ahmad, 2009). Business transformation ( Change Management) is a vital component that must be supported by the Executive team and as such they need to be well informed and knowledgeable in B2C applications.  In 2007 a Norwegian Research team carried out an empirical research study looking at the CSF’s collected from a sample base of 339 Small-Medium Enterprise (SME’s) businesses in Europe. (Eikebrokk, 2007).

Advantages of online shopping

There are a number of distinct advantages in conducting online shopping. Some of these are enumerated as follows:

  • Convenience – You can shop from the comfort of your own home and browse through a selection of different stores as opposed to going down a shopping mall.
  • Cost – You often get better price deals shopping over the internet as the stores do not carry the overheads of a conventional shop in the mall.
  • Variety – You often get more variety on the internet and the ability to customize your purchase to exact needs.
  • Price Comparison – The ability to research your product over a number of stores and compare prices in order to obtain the best deal.
  • No crowds or busy malls – Avoid the stress from crowds and busy shopping malls
  • Sending Gifts – Quick and easy method to send gifts throughout the world e.g. Interflora
  • Discreet Purchases – Allow purchase of discreet goods to avoid embarrassment in shopping stores e.g. condoms, sexy lingerie etc.(Anamika, 2012)

Disadvantages of online shopping

  • Some of the negative attributes to online shopping are enumerated as follows:
  • Security – Your personal details and credit card details are not always secure and this can result in potential hacking or misuse of your private information
  • Tactile – You cannot touch and feel the goods or inspect them like in the mall or store
  • Personal Service – You do not get the personal service that you find in the store
  • Delivery – Your goods have to be delivered and you may incur delivery charges and custom duties
  • Refund Policy – not always clear and causes delays in getting your cash back if you have to return goods. Can be a hassle in having to follow up troublesome vendors
  • Scams – You may be victim of scams particularly from online auction sites
  • Viruses – Some stores contain viruses and unless you have good protection on your PC you may get contaminated. This also applies to the risk of malware and cookies being transmitted to your computer.

Dell Case Study

Dell was one of the earliest entrants to E-Commerce in 1994 and its direct business over the internet provided it with marketing advantages over its close rivals like Apple, IBM and HP.

Since 1984 Dell has established itself as a brand leader of competitive based computer products, particularly in desk tops and lap top computers.  Dell had a loyal customer base because it built up a business with good supplier and customer support. They became famous as a pioneering computer company that invested in its technical capability ensuring high product quality and reliability. This being achieved whilst keeping its customer model in mind regarding flexibility and affordability of the product. (The Irish Times, 2000)

Dell perhaps lost ground to the rival of Apple who produced more creative and innovative products largely attributed to Steve Jobs (CEO) and his innovative team.  Despite this new entrant Dell seemed more prone to self-punishment when in 2007 they lost market share owing to a number of flawed products which in turn damaged its reputation of quality and reliability. Customer frustration with Dell from its user base resulted in blogs outlining the lack of support and the frustration of the customer user base.

Dell developed a strong network of suppliers and business partners in order to help building the reliable and flexible computer supplier.  An early attraction was the ability for customers to fully customise their PC by building a precise model from specifications over the internet.  The suppliers to Dell became well integrated into the order fulfilment process and supply chain. This whole value chain was controlled by Dell using a sophisticated information technology system.  At the time Dell had the largest e-commerce site in Europe managed under a project called ‘Frictionless’.  It automated most of its processes extending the scope of its sales model. This included applications like automated business processes, product configuration, order processing and technical support.  (Maguire, 2003)

Dell utilized this sophistication of technology to integrate the suppliers directly with meeting specific customer need. It essentially created a build to specification assembly line of customised PC’s providing retailers and customers with the precise configuration that they needed. Because Dell had a network of reliable suppliers they were not wholly dependent upon any one of them and this increased both its range and flexibility. (Maguire, 2003)

The importance of the supply chain was demonstrated by Dell`s understanding of what was needed to be achieved in this area.

Dell used the Direct Sales Model concept and quickly entered the retail market setting up a number of retail stores.  It had strong purchasing power and was able to build up inventories that would allow it the flexibility to build custom produced orders. This process was fully automated and as such enabled them to operate a strong supply chain without the need for extensive over stocking that ties up working capital. The high street retail outlets enabled Dell to grow and thus essentially retain a low investment profile. (Maguire, 2003)

Dell was able to deal with a variety of order concepts from simple PC configurations to that of large server and network based systems. It used the internet and call centres in order to build an extensive customer base.  This also allowed Dell to build a large knowledge base about its customers and anticipate both their current and future computing needs.  Dell spent a great deal of effort in getting to know and understand its customers. Dell used information in order to provide them with competitive advantage and build their value chain. (Dedrick, 2001)

The internet provided an easy forum for Dell to enter the international marketplace. This it did readily by setting up overseas manufacturing and distribution centres.  Dell found the following drivers that elevated them into the globalized marketplace

Drivers of Globalization

There are essentially four main drivers of the globalization concept:

Market Drivers

Cost Drivers

Government drivers

Competitive drivers

Considering each of these in turn:

Market Drivers |  Market drivers tend to be influenced by:

Basic needs of the customer

Desire for international customers

Need for global market participation

Concepts of transferable marketing

Cost Drivers | those drivers influencing cost are:

Global scale economies

Improved methods of sourcing

Differences in production methods

High operational costs

Pace of technological development

Government Drivers | those influencing government are:

Policies relating to trade and investment

Technical standards

Impact of marketing regulations

Future Trends and Improvements

The current and most recent trend is towards that of mobility via hand held devices like that of mobile phones or IPADS.  These devices provide the ability to conduct online shopping no matter where you are travelling provided that you have access to wireless internet.  Many wireless  service providers provide access by simple plug in of USB pen drives e.g. Rogers Rocket USB wireless access drive.  Future machines will have this service hard coded into the machines and linked to appropriate service suppliers.  Ultimately it may be possible to project three dimensional hologramatic images of the goods you wish to purchase, as such allowing a more intimate and realistic inspection of the goods to be  purchased.  Despite the technological aspects there remains a great deal of personal satisfaction in visiting a store.  The smell of walking into a tobacconists shop and the smell of a fine cigar.  The smell of perfume in terms of getting the scent that is right for your personality.  The ability to feel smooth silk in a shirt or dress.  In addition the social experience of walking into a store and meeting people.

Conclusions

The concept of litigation seems most prevalent in the area of IT Security.  Nearly all forms of electronic media have the potential for being involved in litigation cases.  When these instances arise one of the most important aspects will be the gathering of data or information for evidence.  Where it is believed that a criminal act has taken place the computers and network devices may be removed for evidence.  Internet Crime and particularly illegal entry into other computer systems i.e. hacking is deemed to be a Federal Offence in the USA and falls under the investigative jurisdiction of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).  Criminal computer hacking has been legally defined as any person who willingly and knowingly commits an act of cyber terrorism, credit card fraud, malicious vandalism, identity theft or other cyber-crime by hacking into a Corporate or Government system.  Such criminal acts are treated very seriously in the USA and will be subject to harsh penalties.  Such intrusions are capable of creating a tremendous amount of malicious damage. When undertaking online shopping you need to be aware of the security threats and take appropriate counter measures.

I was faced with a marketing problem: To convey the idea of the project to consumers, gain their trust, formulating the trend image properly. The aim is to develop the marketing plan of opening and promoting the online shoe shop, retailing worldwide known brands such as Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Uggs and Timberland, represented with wide range of products from either new collections or some exclusive models that are limited. Provide good and fast logistics, safe means of payment, assure good product quality and give guarantees and unprecedented product return. There were available statistics from the real shop by internet, selling the same kind of product – to take an accurate decision about the strategy. Calculation of the profit and payback were satisfying, although some correction could be applied regards to vulnerability of the economic and political environment.

Nurul Najwa Ahmad

Traditional vs. Online Shopping Essay

Introduction.

Shopping constitutes a compulsory function for humans in all walks of life. For a majority of people, shopping is an activity that has transcended from being merely a necessity to one that has become a favorite pastime that brings happiness, recreation, and ‘quality time with friends and members of the family. There are basically 3 kinds of shopping where we buy things we require, things we convince ourselves we require, and things we look at (window shopping) just for pleasure. In the modern world of today, it is possible to indulge in all 3 kinds of shopping by utilizing 2 methods: Traditional shopping and ‘Online’ shopping.

Traditional shopping involves shoppers physically entering a brick-and-mortar store or shopping mall to select items of their choice, pay for them in cash or by credit card, and either take delivery personally or have them delivered to their homes by the retailer. ‘Online shopping is a relatively new method of shopping that involves the shopper sitting in front of a Personal Computer at any location (it could be at home, in the office, in friends’ apartments or in internet cafes), browsing through different categories of products at selected websites either alone or with the assistance of family members and/or friends, choosing items, paying for the purchases by credit card or by electronically transferring money from a bank account (from personal experience, I have noticed there is usually no other payment option).

The selected goods are delivered within a period ranging from a day to a week or even longer. In almost all cases, due to the fact that while selecting an item its availability is also clearly mentioned, the entire selection is delivered; if for some unforeseen reason some items are not delivered, then the value of those items is refunded to the customer by the ‘Online’ seller.

Traditional and ‘Online’ shopping are similar in two ways. Firstly, both forms of shopping follow the general concept of commerce; in both cases, there is a buyer and a seller, both of whom share a specific understanding of how the commercial transaction is expected to unfold, run its course and reach its satisfactory conclusion. Secondly, the prominent method of payment in both forms of shopping is credit card payment; although traditional shoppers can opt for check or cash payment, and although ‘Online’ shoppers can opt for electronic transfer of funds from their bank accounts, credit card purchases are preferred in both cases.

Traditional and ‘Online’ shopping is different in several ways. In one group of differences, Traditional shopping holds ‘absolute’ superiority: Firstly, shoppers experience the physical thrill of shopping. Shopping is commonly seen as a way of unwinding after a hard day’s work, or (especially in the case of housewives), escaping from the monotonous routine of everyday life (cooking, cleaning, and looking after the kids). Then there is festival shopping, which usually involves the entire family shopping for decorations and gifts for such occasions as Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving (personally, I have several fond memories of this).

Secondly, Traditional shoppers are brought face-to-face with an item that they can touch, feel and examine at close proximity – this goes a long way towards making up their mind to buy it. Thirdly, Traditional shoppers are able to talk with the salespersons or merchants of the store or mall upfront, and freely seek clarification or additional information about products that interest them. Fourthly, Traditional shoppers are able to bargain and obtain a better price for their purchases.

Although people in the United States do not usually engage in energetic bargaining, there are people of several other international cultures (such as Italians, Greeks, and Indians), to whom bargaining forms the essence of the shopping experience, and without which they would end up with the uncomfortable feeling of being cheated. Fifthly, Traditional shoppers are able to judge the merchant’s reputation (and by association, the products being sold in that store) by interacting with other customers. Sixthly, Traditional shoppers are able to take home their purchases immediately, or at the most have them delivered to their homes on the same or the next day.

They, therefore, save time as do not have to wait for days or weeks to receive their purchases as is the usual case in ‘Online’ shopping (there is also the distinct possibility of some items not being ultimately delivered due to some reason such as shortages caused due to improper inventory management). Lastly, almost everyone is well aware that today’s world is blemished by an increasing number of cybercrimes.

These have grown at an alarming rate with increasingly ingenious methods being adopted by computer-savvy criminals. A very large number of innocent people have been, and are being fleeced of their hard-earned money over the Internet – their only crime being that they had to give their personal and bank details while shopping online. On the other hand, Traditional shoppers do not need to give their names, address, and (most importantly) bank account information which are all ‘must-do’s in the case of ‘Online’ shopping.

In the second group of differences, ‘Online’ shopping holds the ‘absolute’ superiority. The first difference involves selection. ‘Online shoppers can browse through a wide selection of products from different retailers and place a single order involving products from different retailers, rather than otherwise embark on the tedious exercise of visiting several stores or malls physically to pick up a few items here and a few items there.

Secondly, ‘Online’ shoppers are benefited by a significant reduction in prices as ‘Online’ sellers have vastly reduced overheads to contend with (especially store/mall rent/maintenance and salaries/perks for salespersons) and are able to comfortably pass on a sizeable part of this benefit to customers in the form of reduced prices for the products sold. Lastly, ‘Online’ shoppers have the luxury of doing their shopping at leisure from the comfort of their home, without having to drive to far-away shopping destinations and being traumatized by rash drivers and difficult car parking situations.

In the third group of differences, both types of shopping score nearly equal points. The first difference involves the time element. In Traditional shopping, customers save time as don’t have to wait for days or weeks to receive their purchases. ‘Online’ shoppers choose the time and place to shop, thus saving valuable time and problems associated with traveling to and from the store.

Secondly, while admitting that the ‘sight and touch’ factor is important, ‘Online’ shoppers find it is irrelevant in the case of items like computers, consumer electronic items, cosmetics, perfumes, and jewelry, where ‘Online’ specifications are clear-cut, very detailed and imminently satisfactory. Lastly, while Traditional shoppers can get clarification and further information about a product from the salesperson or merchant, ‘Online’ shoppers have access to clarifying the information in the form of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and ‘Online’ customer service for the products they intend to purchase.

From a fair and impartial judgment of both cases, it is my contention that Traditional shopping is definitely better than ‘Online’ shopping simply because the comparative number and weight of its advantages vis-à-vis ‘Online shopping is much more significant as compared to ‘Online’ shopping own unique advantages. As a result, while agreeing that ‘Online’ shopping continues to grow in the United States, it will not overtake Traditional shopping mainly because of the two greatest ‘arrows in the quiver’ of the latter – Firstly, it involves the formidably unique ‘sight and touches’ advantage that Traditional shoppers enjoy.

And secondly, it gives people an opportunity to mingle with others, interact with acquaintances, friends, and relatives and spend ‘quality time with them – in our increasingly busy and modern world of today comprising people increasingly cocooned in their own lives and problems, this pleasurable human interaction afforded by Traditional shopping is literally priceless.

Essay on Online Shopping vs Offline Shopping

Students are often asked to write an essay on Online Shopping vs Offline Shopping in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Online Shopping vs Offline Shopping

Introduction.

Online and offline shopping are two different ways of purchasing goods. Online shopping is done on the internet, while offline shopping is done in physical stores.

Convenience

Online shopping is more convenient as you can shop from anywhere at any time. Offline shopping requires you to travel to the store during its operating hours.

Offline shopping provides a tactile experience, allowing you to touch and try products. Online shopping lacks this, but offers detailed product descriptions and reviews.

Delivery Time

Offline shopping gives instant possession of products, while online shopping involves waiting for delivery.

Both methods have their advantages. The choice depends on personal preference and circumstances.

250 Words Essay on Online Shopping vs Offline Shopping

The advent of the internet has drastically transformed the way we shop. Online and offline shopping have emerged as two distinct models, each with its unique advantages and challenges.

Online Shopping: Convenience and Variety

Online shopping offers unparalleled convenience. You can shop from the comfort of your home at any time, eliminating the need for travel and adherence to store hours. It also provides a vast array of choices, with the ability to compare prices and products from different vendors. Moreover, online platforms often offer attractive discounts and deals.

Offline Shopping: Tangibility and Instant Gratification

Offline shopping, on the other hand, provides a tangible experience. Consumers can touch, feel, and try products before purchasing, reducing the risk of dissatisfaction. It also offers instant gratification as there’s no waiting period for delivery. Furthermore, it allows for personalized customer service, which can significantly enhance the shopping experience.

Challenges and Trade-offs

However, both models come with their set of challenges. Online shopping may present issues with product quality, delivery delays, and cybersecurity. Offline shopping can be time-consuming, limited in variety, and often lacks the convenience of home delivery.

In conclusion, the choice between online and offline shopping is largely dependent on individual preferences and the type of product being purchased. A blend of both models, known as omnichannel retailing, is increasingly being adopted, providing consumers with the best of both worlds.

500 Words Essay on Online Shopping vs Offline Shopping

Online and offline shopping are two different methods of deciding how to purchase products. While online shopping offers convenience and a wide range of products, offline shopping provides the tangible experience of physically interacting with products before buying. This essay will delve into both these shopping methods, comparing their pros and cons.

Online Shopping: A New Age Convenience

Online shopping has revolutionized the way consumers purchase goods. The ability to shop from the comfort of home, at any hour, is a significant advantage. It saves consumers time and the hassle of travelling. Additionally, online platforms offer a wider range of products than most physical stores, allowing consumers to compare prices and read reviews before making a purchase.

Moreover, online shopping platforms often offer discounts and deals that are not available in physical stores. This is particularly beneficial for budget-conscious college students. However, online shopping is not without its drawbacks. The inability to physically inspect a product can lead to disappointment if the product does not meet expectations. Also, concerns about data privacy and the risk of online fraud can deter some customers.

Offline Shopping: The Traditional Approach

Offline shopping, on the other hand, provides a sensory experience that online shopping cannot replicate. Customers can touch, feel, and try products before purchasing, reducing the risk of dissatisfaction. Additionally, offline shopping allows for instant gratification as there’s no need to wait for delivery.

Furthermore, offline shopping offers a social experience. Going to the mall or shopping center can be an enjoyable outing with friends or family. However, offline shopping also has its downsides. The limited range of products, higher prices, and the time and effort required to travel to the store can be off-putting for some consumers.

Conclusion: A Blend of Both Worlds

In conclusion, both online and offline shopping have their unique advantages and disadvantages. Online shopping offers convenience, a wider range of products, and often better prices. Conversely, offline shopping provides a tangible, sensory experience, instant gratification, and a social outing.

The choice between online and offline shopping ultimately depends on the individual’s preferences, needs, and the nature of the product. Some may prefer the convenience and range of online shopping, while others may value the tangible experience of offline shopping. As technology advances and consumer habits evolve, we may see a blend of both worlds, where the digital and physical realms of shopping merge to provide an enhanced shopping experience.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.
