Speech@NYU is the online SLP master’s program offered by the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders.  It is designed for aspiring speech-language pathologists who want the flexibility to pursue fulfilling careers in a variety of settings.

The online modality of the SLP master’s program is accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and prepares you to work toward speech-language pathology certification. The curriculum is grounded in evidence-based practice and enables you to provide person-centered care for diverse populations with communication and swallowing disorders.

Clinical Training in the Online Master’s in Speech Pathology

In the speech-language pathology program, you are assigned a dedicated placement specialist who will work with you to find NYU Steinhardt faculty-approved clinical field placement sites in or near your community.

With Speech@NYU, you will receive the in-depth training to provide forward-thinking, culturally competent care to clients of all ages without having to relocate.

As a student, you will complete a five-part sequence of on-campus clinical practicum and clinical field placement experiences at your placement site.

  • Practicum I (Pre-Clinic and Immersion)
  • Practicum II (Diagnostic Assessment and Immersion)
  • Clinical Field Placement III (Treatment)
  • Clinical Field Placement IV (Pediatrics)
  • Clinical Field Placement V (Adults)

Clinical Immersions

Before beginning field placements, you will attend two immersions to help adequately prepare you to conduct clinical diagnostics in speech pathology and work more independently in your clinical experiences.

During these immersions, you will:

  • Provide language, hearing, cognitive, and/or swallowing screens to diverse communities.
  • Receive dedicated supervision and receive on-the-spot feedback from speech-language pathologists.
  • Participate in specialized workshops relating to topics such as language screening, instrumental assessment of voice disorders, dysphagia screening, and aphasia treatment.

Earn Your Online SLP Master’s Degree Full Time or Part Time

You have the flexibility to pursue your SLP graduate degree  full time or part time based on your scheduling needs . You can earn your master’s in speech-language pathology in as few as six or seven terms attending full time, or set a slower pace by attending part time until your field placement begins.

Study Abroad Opportunities

Students in both the on-campus and online modalities of the SLP master’s program have the opportunity to complete a  study abroad program in countries like Sweden or Ghana  to study communication disorders from a cross-cultural perspective.

The program includes participating in local site visits, studying with local guest lecturers, and immersing yourself in a linguistically and culturally distinct setting.

You will attend two weekend-long immersion experiences at Emerson’s Boston campus. The immersion is a great opportunity to  connect with your peers and faculty while practicing hands-on application of concepts  learned in class under licensed supervision.

You will complete one virtual placement and four community placements. Our team of dedicated placement specialists will help you  find local sites within our national partner network where you can experience hands-on training . Your community placements will span at least four semesters, broadening your professional experience with a variety of individuals.

As a student in the online Master of Sciences in Communication Disorders (M.S.) program, you must accumulate a minimum of 400 supervised clinical practice hours, 25 of which may be in clinical observation.

Background Checks and Other Clearances:

As a student, you are required to complete student health requirements specifically related to Massachusetts state law and Emerson College, including a background check and health clearances required by the program and/or placement site. Clearance requirements include vaccinations against Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR), Varicella (Chicken Pox), Hepatitis B, Tuberculosis (TB), Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis), Influenza (Flu), Meningococcal (for students under age 21 only), as well as proof of health insurance, and a physical exam. If you fail to complete or maintain all clearances, you will be unable to continue in the program until you are fully compliant.  Depending on requirements of individual placement sites, students may be required to obtain multiple background checks and/or state specific clearances during their master’s degree studies. Information about background checks and clearances is included on your Orientation site. In addition, your Student Success Advisor will provide details on how to complete these clearances.

Online SLP Program Curriculum Sample

Information is provided about the development of normal and disordered communication in children from 3 to 21 years of age. Includes material regarding important theories, legislation, service delivery models, assessment, remediation, literacy, and specific populations of special-needs children.  Attributes: TE. (3 Credits)

Objectives are to help the student understand basic statistical concepts utilized in research design and in speech-language pathology and audiology. Focus will be on the scientific method as a problem-solving process, developing experimental procedures for answering research questions, learning to establish and test hypotheses, and summarizing and interpreting data. (3 Credits)

Introduction to augmentative communication with discussion of its impact on individuals who are severely speech and language impaired. Students are familiarized with augmentative communication techniques and strategies. Assessment and intervention options are covered. Students have an opportunity for hands-on experience with a variety of augmentative communication devices and other adaptive equipment. Attributes: TE. (3 Credits)

Prepares students to identify, differentiate, and contrast the phenomenology, symptomatology, and diagnostic and therapeutic processes of adult aphasia, apraxia of speech, and related disorders. (S) (3 Credits)

When do the clinical experiences take place?

Throughout your program, you will have four clinical practica, as well as two full-time externships in the final semester. These experiences will prepare you for a career in speech-language pathology.

What is involved with clinical experiences?

The clinical experiences are designed to provide you with real-world, hands-on experience to complement your classroom learning. These off-campus experiences in practice settings near your home enrich your graduate experience by preparing you for action in the field in a variety of settings.

Why study Speech-Language Pathology : Online?

The University of Cincinnati is one of the very few top-ranked programs to offer a fully online Master of Arts Degree in Speech-Language Pathology.  

The MA Online program involves the in-depth study of the various disorders of communication coupled with practicum experience. Students at the Master of Arts level are expected to acquire those skills which would enable them to identify and manage a full range of speech/language, swallowing, and hearing disorders. The Online MA Program is a collaboration with The University of Akron; therefore students admitted to UC will complete academic courses through both UC and Akron. 

Graduates are required to acquire specific skills and knowledge according to the Council on Academic Accreditation in Speech-Language Pathology (Distance Education) in order to be certified by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association and to be eligible for licensure in the State of Ohio (for speech-language pathology) and Ohio Department of Education (school) licensure. As such, you will complete course work in the areas of Language and Literacy, Phonology, Aphasia, Motor Speech, Dysphagia, Cognition, Voice, Craniofacial Anomalies, Stuttering, Augmentative and Alternative Communication, and Management of Children with Hearing Impairment.   

Part-Time Curriculum   

The MA Online program contains 3 years (8 semesters) of part-time study. This allows you the flexibility of maintaining employment during the first half of your program.

If you do not possess a well-rounded undergraduate major in Speech and Hearing, or come from another field, you may still be eligible for the program after completing some undergraduate requirements prior to beginning the graduate program. 

Distance Requirement  

In order to qualify for the Online MA in Speech-Language Pathology program, you must live within 4 hours of driving distance to the University of Cincinnati.  

The MA Online program prepares graduates for a career as a speech-language pathologist.   

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) evaluate, diagnose and treat people with speech, language, or swallowing difficulties. They work with many types of patients, including stroke victims who are relearning to communicate, babies who have trouble swallowing, people who speak with a stutter, and children with language delays.

Combine science with hands-on experience for a flexible, rewarding career through our full-time online Master of Science (MS) program in Speech-Language Pathology, which provides aspiring professionals the competence to diagnose and treat the full range of communicative disorders in all age groups.

The program provides academic and unique clinical instruction across the lifespan. Students will learn about service delivery in a variety of settings, including the opportunity to provide services via tele practice, and will gain clinical experience in healthcare and educational settings as well as in courses, in the STEPS lab, with standardized patients, and in local and regional clinical settings. In addition, students can engage in externships, interprofessional practice, and research. Online students work as Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (SLP-A) with approved partner organizations, such as the West Virginia Department of Education.

Speech Language Pathology M.S. Admission Requirements

In alignment with the mission and vision of the Division of Communication Sciences & Disorders we utilize a holistic review process that fosters a diverse and inclusive culture.   • July 17: WVU CSDCAS Portal Opens
  • October 20: In-Person Open House, 1 PM EST, Registration Required

Admission Requirements

Applicants will be considered for our graduate programs if they have personal attributes that are predictive of academic and clinical success; high academic achievement; and English proficiency.

Personal attributes. Applicants are expected to possess personal characteristics that are necessary for success in graduate study as well as in professional clinical practice. These characteristics include:

  • A desire for lifelong learning,
  • Critical thinking ability,
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, and
  • An openness to receiving constructive feedback.

These characteristics are evaluated by the Casper (Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics) and activities completed during the invited Interview Day.

Academic achievement. Students must have:

  • Obtained a baccalaureate degree or equivalent from a properly recognized institution of higher learning prior to starting the program,
  • Maintained an overall undergraduate grade point average of at least 2.8 (where ‘A’ = 4.0). However, for an overall undergraduate GPA below 3.0, the applicant must have achieved a GPA of 3.2 or higher in one of the following: CSD major coursework, all of the CSD prerequisites, or in the most recent 60 credits taken at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Completed the prerequisite coursework listed below with a grade of ‘C’ or better. A minimum of two courses in the CSD coursework must be completed before the application deadline. The remaining prerequisite courses must be completed prior to starting the graduate program.

At least one course in each of the following CSD content areas:

  • Language Acquisition/Development
  • Anatomy & Physiology of Speech and Hearing
  • Speech & Hearing Science
  • Introduction to Audiology

For the online SLP program only – Eligibility for SLP-Assistant licensure in West Virginia. Students accepted to the online SLP program will work as an SLP Assistant in West Virginia schools while completing coursework online with periodic on-campus activities. Therefore, applicants for this program will need to be eligible for a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant license in the state of West Virginia. Prospective students who wish to pursue an SLP-Assistant position outside of West Virginia and/or the West Virginia Department of Education must contact the Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

English proficiency. Applicants who did not complete their bachelor's degree in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, or New Zealand must meet the minimum score requirements for English proficiency. WVU’s minimum score requirements for English proficiency are: Academic IELTS score of 6.5, TOEFL iBT score of 79, PTE Academic score of 53, or Duolingo English Test score of 105.

Application Process

To be considered for 2024 admissions, all of the following need to be finalized no later than the February 1st deadline.

Complete an application through CSDCAS. Applications for the Doctorate of Audiology and the On-Campus and Online Master’s programs in Speech-Language Pathology must be submitted through the Communication Sciences & Disorders Centralized Application Service (CSDCAS), which can be accessed via the CSDCAS Portal.

Send official transcripts from each college or university attended directly to CSDCAS. Official transcripts should include all grades through the fall 2023 semester. Foreign transcripts should be evaluated for U.S. equivalency according to the information in the CSDCAS Applicant Help Center.

No GRE, letters of recommendation, personal statement, or clinical observation hours are required. Applicants’ academic ability and personal characteristics both will be considered for admission. Because of our holistic review process, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, and personal statements are not required. Applicants’ academic ability will be evaluated based on prerequisite coursework, GPA, and interview day activities. Clinical observation hours are incorporated into the graduate program and are not required as part of the admission process.

Complete prerequisite coursework and report grades in CSDCAS. A minimum of two courses in the CSD coursework must be completed before the application deadline, February 1st. The remaining prerequisite courses listed in the Admissions Requirements section must be completed prior to starting the graduate program. All prerequisite courses must have a grade of ‘C’ or better.

Complete the Casper. Casper (Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics) is a non-cognitive assessment of interpersonal skills. No studying is required, although you may want to familiarize yourself with the test structure using the link provided because the test can only be taken one time during an admission cycle.

Visit acuityinsights.app to create an account and register to take Casper using test code CSP-10101. When you register, you will have the opportunity to take two assessments – Casper and Snapshot. The WVU CSD graduate programs only require Casper (Snapshot is not required).

Note: Casper scores are sent directly to WVU, so you do not need to upload your scores to CSDCAS. This is the only application material that is not submitted to CSDCAS.

There are many test dates available from July 27, 2023, through January 16, 2024. Applicants must complete Casper by the final test date of January 16, 2024, to be considered for 2024 admissions. Applicants may search for available dates/time via the Acuity Insights website.

Complete English proficiency test and submit scores to CSDCAS (if applicable). Applicants who did not complete their bachelor's degree in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, or New Zealand should complete one of the tests listed in the Admissions Requirements section and submit their scores to CSDCAS. The test should be completed well in advance of the February 1st deadline so that official scores will be available in time.

Submit your completed CSDCAS application prior to the February 1st deadline to ensure it is verified. To be considered for admission, your application status in CSDCAS must be posted as verified on or before February 1st. CSDCAS recommends having your application completed (e-submitted and all payments, transcripts, and required documents submitted) at least four weeks in advance of the verification deadline, which is by January 4th, to ensure the application is verified by February 1. Review the CSDCAS website for more information on the program deadline requirements and how long the application process takes through CSDCAS.

The timeliness of the application is considered the responsibility of the applicant. Applications that are not verified by February 1st will not be considered for the current admission cycle.

Students who graduate with a Speech-Language Pathology degree are eligible to complete the Praxis Examination and apply for certification through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, allowing them to practice as a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). How do online students gain experience in the field.

The full-time online Master of Science (MS) program in speech-language pathology is designed for individuals working as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLP-A) with a designated partner organization. As such, students must be eligible for licensure as an SLP-A in the state in which they will practice.

Traditionally, these partner organizations have been public schools in West Virginia. However, alternative placements as an SLP-A may be considered. Will I be compensated for my work as an SLP-A?

Students in the full-time online Master of Science (MS) in speech-language pathology will receive a salary as an SLP-A in their partner organization. However, they may be expected to cover their WVU tuition and living expenses. Additionally, for those working in a public school in West Virginia, supplemental benefits and assistance may be available through individual counties within an SLP-A job offer.

How long will the online SLP program take to complete? What will I be required to complete?

If taken full-time, the online SLP program begins in the summer and is ten semesters in length. Students take an average of 7 credits per semester, with part-time status some semesters and full-time status others.

In addition to coursework, students must meet certain benchmarks to be eligible for graduation. They must maintain a 3.0 GPA, pass their knowledge and skills assessments, complete a final project, and achieve a minimum of 400 supervised clinical clock hours.

What opportunities do I have to build my professional network?

In addition to the online SLP program, WVU offers a campus-based MS in SLP and a Doctor of Audiology. All of our students – campus-based and online – are part of the same community and, eventually, professional network. As an online SLP student, you will have opportunities to participate periodically in on-campus or hybrid activities with your peers. This begins with orientation, which is hybrid; continues throughout your program; and culminates with graduation, where we hope to welcome you in person to celebrate your accomplishments!

What do career outcomes look like once I graduate?

Graduates of our on-campus speech-language pathology program perform well and consistently on the praxis examination, with a three-year average pass rate of 100%. Similarly, our three-year program completion rate for the on-campus program is 98.04%. In other words, our program prepares students well to join the profession – which is in-demand, with anticipated growth of 21% by 2031 (much faster than the national average for other professions). You can complete the program in 2 years.

No, the MA in Speech-Language Pathology program is a full-time program. However, the MA can be completed in a 2-year or 3-year track. The 2-year track is accelerated and students generally take 2 didactic courses plus a clinic course in each 8-week block. The 3-year track is still considered full-time, but students only take one didactic course per 8-week block the first year, and one didactic course plus a clinic course per 8-week block in the second year and third years. Regardless of track, the final year of the program contains three clinical externship semesters which are full-time Monday-Friday experiences. 

Your first steps toward applying are to complete the required CSDCAS application . Once you have completed your application, you’ll fill out our information form , gather your remaining application materials, and submit your completed file.

The application deadline is May 15 (Fall term).

A majority of states require an aspiring speech-language pathologist (SLP) to get their master’s in speech pathology from a program accredited by or equal to standards set by the  American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)  and its accrediting body, the  Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA).  It is important to know what your state requires in terms of accreditation so that you can choose a program that is valid for  speech-language pathologist (SLP) licensure in your state.

Also, if you are interested in earning  ASHA’s Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) , you will need to attend a CAA-accredited graduate SLP program. Admission to the Graduate Program

Enrollment in 500/600 level courses in Speech-Language Pathology is restricted to students who have been accepted to the graduate program of the department as unconditionally classified students. Students wishing to be admitted must complete the following procedures:

  • Students must meet the criteria for acceptance by the University as a graduate student;
  •  Every student must apply directly to the university through Cal State Apply. Cal State Apply applications are processed by the university online at  https://www2.calstate.edu/apply . The department will access the transcripts electronically for department evaluation. 
  • Students applying to the SLP M.A. program must apply to the Department of Speech-Language Pathology for admission using the Department Application Form. The appropriate Department Application Form which is available on the SLP Department website:  https://www.csulb.edu/college-of-health-human-services/speech-language-pathology . The Department of Speech-Language Pathology admits students to the M.A program once per year for fall start dates.  

Prerequisites

Students applying to the graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology must have completed one of these two prerequisites:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a major in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD), Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences; or
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a discipline other than Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD). The applicant must have at least 30 semester units (or 45 quarter units) of coursework in speech-language pathology/communication sciences and disorders before enrollment in the graduate program.

Note 1: A minimum of 30 semester units (45 quarter units) in SLP coursework must be completed before enrollment in the graduate program.

Note 2: Any course deficiencies will be determined by the department graduate advisor and the department chairperson after consultation with the student and the student’s faculty advisor. Students applying to the graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology will have completed the identified coursework prior to enrollment in graduate classes.

Advancement to Candidacy

In order to be advanced to candidacy for a master’s degree, a student must meet the following criteria:

  • enrollment in the semester in which advancement takes place;
  • must complete all undergraduate requirements if any course deficiencies are identified by the department graduate advisor and the department chairperson;
  • complete a minimum of 9 units of SLP graduate-level coursework at CSULB;
  • maintenance of a GPA of at least 3.0 in (a) all graduate work completed in Speech-Language Pathology, (b) all graduate work completed at CSULB, and (c) all graduate work transferred to meet graduation requirements with no grade below “C”;
  • submission of the Department’s Advancement to Candidacy Form which will be reviewed and approved by the department graduate advisor and the department chairperson. 

Note: Once a student advances to candidacy, he/she must continue to maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA; otherwise, candidacy may be revoked.

SLP program listed on 2025 US News and World Report rankings

U.S. News & World Report has released its 2025 “Best Graduate Schools” rankings, and CWRU’s master’s program in speech-language pathology (SLP) was ranked 44 th in the nation.

“We are grateful for the recognition that this list has generated and welcome the chance to highlight what makes our program special,” said Kay McNeal , MA clinical program director.

One of the aspects that make the CWRU SLP program special is the hands-on research by students. 

“Every student completes a research project on a topic of their choice, unique for master’s level SLP programs in the country,” said psychological sciences’ Angela Ciccia . 

McNeal and communication science’s Lauren Calandruccio gave us a breakdown on other aspects of the program that stand out:

The university’s smaller size as compared to others on the list fosters faculty/student collaboration. Students assigned research and clinical advisors.

Students engage the community and perform clinical work at area hospitals, rehab facilities, clinics, early childhood programs and in CWRU’s Speakeasy program .

The 10 master’s students from the program’s 2023 graduating class logged over 4,300 hours of clinical service.

Students participate in IMPACT (Innovative Mentoring and Professional Advancement through Cultural Training), which is designed to increase the diversity of SLPs serving an increasingly diverse U.S. population.

The program recently hired 2 new tenure-track faculty who will bring additional research and teaching depth.

100% of SLP students obtain clinical fellowships either before or shortly after they graduate. This includes at The Cleveland Clinic, University of Wisconsin’s Waisman Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital, just to name a few.

“We have an amazing faculty and an amazing student body,” said Calandruccio. “Rankings are nice, but what we are accomplishing in our small program is awesome. I am very proud to serve on the faculty.”

As anyone who stutters will attest, one of the most frustrating aspects of the problem is that neither family nor friends truly can empathize with the agony that the stutterer goes through each time that he tries to speak. They can see the effects of excess muscle tension-pursed lips, quivering jaw, involuntary facial and head movements- as well as observe the embarrassment that stuttering often causes. But try as they might to identify with those feelings, the most that they can do is offer compassion.

Even speech therapists, with valuable training and clinical knowledge, cannot offer treatment from the perspective of having experienced the problem themselves. Ross Barrett is a rare and successful exception.

Barrett approaches the treatment of stuttering not only with an uncommon method, but also with singular experience. The simple fact that he stuttered well into his adult life would qualify him, in many stutterers' eyes, to lead a therapy program.

What attracts the attention of stutterers and non-stutterers alike, however, are his Master's Degree in speech pathology from the University of Cincinnati and his long record of success in helping his students establish and maintain fluency.

Mr. Barrett is a longstanding member of and is certified by the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and is a Board Recognized Fluency Specialist. He is a member of the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia. Barrett has been recognized as a Health Care Hero by Inside Business and has appeared in many national and local newspaper, radio and television news reports for his expertise on stuttering.

To achieve this Barrett uses methods, which help stutterers retrain their speech muscles to produce fluent speech.

The program is centered around the fact that the physical act of stuttering is nothing more than distorted muscle movements. Certain movement patterns produce fluent speech and patterns other than those produce disfluent speech. Most stutterers have spontaneous fluency from time to time but since it is not the result of conscious effort, they cannot control or maintain it. By understanding the mechanics of speech and acquiring new muscle-movement patterns in a step-by-step manner, most stutterers leave therapy with controlled fluent speech. "No one can 'cure' stuttering," says Barrett." But those who learn and apply these methods can achieve long-term controlled fluency. I can provide the tools and the benefit of my experience as a stutterer, but each client member must contribute commitment and hard work to be successful."

Experience Makes A Difference While Barrett emphasizes each student's own role in his or her success, invariably his students stress the advantage of receiving instruction from someone who himself battled stuttering. After attending HCRI (Hollins College Research Institute) in 1972, he dedicated his professional life to helping other stutterers achieve and maintain the same level of fluency that he reached. The former stockbroker went back to academics and received his master's degree in speech pathology. Decades of experience and more than one thousand clients later, his experience and personal and professional successes “speak” for themselves.

"When Ross instructs you on what to do and how to do it, you listen, because you know that he has been in your position, and you see what the methods can do," observed a recent graduate of the program. "You can tell that he has an understanding of what you're going through, as well as a true desire to help."

The fact that motivation plays an important part in any type of success is not lost on the student-turned-teacher. When asked what compels him to do this work, Barrett replies, "My motivation is the fluent speech that I hear at the end of therapy -- and I enjoy the smiles, too."

Pathologists’ assistants have a deep understanding of human anatomy and diseases. Through education and training, they learned specialized clinical skills to assist in autopsies and examinations. Their findings help physicians diagnose diseases or causes of death. The work pathologists’ assistants complete is critical in the research to improve care and outcomes.

The Association of American Medical Colleges ( AAMC ) estimates that by 2034 there will be an estimated shortage of between 37,800 and 124,000 physicians in the US. The demand for physician extenders, such as pathologists’ assistants, who can work independently under supervision, is growing. In fact, the BLS (2023) predicts that employment of physician assistants is projected to grow 27 percent from 2022 to 2032, which is much faster than the average for all occupations (3 percent). The BLS currently classifies pathologists’ assistants as physician assistants.

While pathologists’ assistants work in various settings, including morgues, teaching facilities, and labs, they are most typically employed at hospitals. Day-to-day duties they perform include gross (initial) examinations of specimens, preparing samples of tissues and fluids for examination, photographing specimens, writing reports, and assisting with administrative lab tasks.

To work in this field, pathologists’ assistants must complete a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences ( NAACLS ) accredited program. These two-year programs include one year of study and one year of hands-on clinical rotations to gain the skill necessary to excel in this field.

Pathologists’ Assistant Admissions Requirements & Accreditation

Admission requirements for pathologist’ assistant programs typically include:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Prerequisite coursework in chemistry, organic chemistry, and biology

The National Accrediting Agency Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredits pathologists’ assistant programs. There are only 12 accredited pathologists’ assistant programs in the US and only four in Canada. It is imperative that students attend an accredited program as this is required for American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification.

Drexel University – College of Medicine

The two-year master of science in pathologists’ assistant (PathA) at Drexel University College of Medicine merges a year of intensive classroom study with the second year of practical fieldwork. The program’s curriculum includes courses such as medical terminology; applied anatomic pathology; biomedical photography; medical terminology; autopsy pathology; medical microbiology; and medical pathology, among others. Graduates will have the necessary education and training to work independently under the supervision of a pathologist.

Students must complete a total of 91 semester hours credits to complete this program. A bachelor’s degree in allied health or biological science with a grade point average of at least 3.0 is the minimum requirement for acceptance into this program. Additional requirements include prerequisite coursework, GRE scores, a personal statement, letters of recommendation, and official transcripts demonstrating a completed bachelor’s degree.

Graduates will be ready to take up positions in a variety of settings such as community hospitals, private pathology laboratories, government hospitals, medical examiner offices, medical research centers, and academic centers such as university hospitals and medical schools.

Duke University – School of Medicine

The Duke University School of Medicine master’s in health science pathologists’ assistant degree trains students in surgical and autopsy pathology. In addition to technical skills, students will also learn various administrative skills, including managing budgets, supervising, and teaching.

Comprising 94 credits, the program includes courses such as an introduction to practical anatomic pathology techniques; foundations of patient care; neuroscience and the autopsy; introduction to autopsy pathology; anatomic pathology and digital analytics; surgical pathology; the pathologic basis of clinical medicine; laboratory technologies and techniques; and photography. This program can be completed in just under two years. Graduates are eligible to sit for the ASCP certification exam.

This program has graduated more than 600 students since it began in 1973.

To graduate, students must complete 89 semester credit hours in coursework such as surgical pathology; autopsy pathology; histochemistry; disease mechanisms; and human embryology. Admission requirements include a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, prerequisite coursework, letters of recommendation, a statement of intent, a current resume, and official transcripts. GRE scores are not required.

University of Maryland – School of Medicine

With only ten students per class, the master’s of science for pathologists’ assistants at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is a small and intimate program that graduates outstanding professionals in this field. This program boasts a 100 percent job placement rate and 100 ASCP pass rate since 2018. With a focus on both surgical and autopsy pathology, students receive a well-rounded education.

Upon completing two semesters of classroom-based coursework, students will engage in three full semesters of clinical rotations to practice their pathology skills in actual morgues, hospitals, and labs. This program is only offered to full-time students and can be completed in only 22 months.

Made up of 38 credits, the program includes courses such as systemic pathology; general pathology; autopsy pathology; surgical pathology; cell and systems physiology; laboratory management; clinical pathology and microbiology; and structure and development (anatomy, histology, and embryology).

Wayne State University

Wayne State University’s Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences offers a master of science program in pathologists’ assistant program that trains students in this highly specialized field, preparing them for their careers through comprehensive experiential learning. Students will be prepared to assist pathologists in surgical, anatomic, autopsy, and forensic pathology.

To get accepted into the program, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0, completion of all prerequisite coursework, submission of two letters of recommendation, and TOEFL scores for students whose first language of instruction is not English.

Consisting of 77 credits, the program includes courses such as applied general pathology; medical photography and techniques in pathology; human anatomy and physiology for pathologists’ assistants; human embryology and pediatric pathology; histochemistry for the pathologists’ assistants; neuroanatomy for the pathologists’ assistant; surgical pathology; and clinical pathology.

West Virginia University

West Virginia University School of Medicine’s pathologists’ assistant program culminates in a master’s degree in health science. Class sizes for this program are kept small, consisting of just 16 students per class. The program’s first year includes hands-on experiences in surgical pathology gross rooms and autopsy suites, while the second year comprises clinical rotations in several medical settings providing students with a wide range of experience before employment. Graduates will be eligible to take the ASCP board certification exam.

The 74-credit curriculum of the program includes courses such as anatomical pathology techniques; educational methodologies; systemic pathology; fundamentals of physiology; microbiology; medical laboratory management; advanced microanatomy; and autopsy and surgical procedures.

Admission requirements to the program include a bachelor’s degree in any science, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, two letters of recommendation, completion of prerequisite courses, a statement of purpose, a current resume, and current transcripts.

Cheryl Hanau

Dr. Cheryl Hanau serves as a professor and the Richard Shuman, MD Chair in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Drexel University. Prior to being appointed chair, she was the associate dean for admissions, as well as the program director of the pathology and laboratory science residency program.

Dr. Hanau has many accolades to her name, including being named a “Top Doctor” by Philadelphia Magazine and receiving the Lindback Award, the June Klinghoffer Clinical Educator Award, and several Golden Apple awards. She earned her MD at Jefferson Medical College, where she completed fellowships in surgical pathology and cytopathology.

Diana Marcella Cardona

Dr. Diana Marcella Cardona earned her doctor of medicine degree from the University of Miami and completed her pathology residency at the University of Florida. She then went on to complete a fellowship in gastrointestinal and liver pathology. Her primary areas of specialization are transplant pathology and carcinogenesis of the pancreas.

Dr. Cardona has been an associate professor of pathology at Duke University’s School of Medicine for over a decade. She is a prolific writer and was listed as an author in no fewer than eight publications in 2020 alone. Her research has been published in prominent journals such as The American Journal of Surgical Pathology, Blood , and Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology .

Olga Ioffe

Dr. Olga Ioffee completed medical school in Moscow, Russia. She then traveled to the US to complete her residency in internal medicine and anatomic and clinical pathology in Maryland. She is the division head for anatomic pathology and the associate chair for education at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Her primary specialties are surgical pathology and cytopathology. She also has a clinical specialization in breast and gynecology pathology and routinely consults in this area. She is currently participating in several National Institute of Health-funded research projects on breast cancer. When not researching or teaching, she also works as the editor-in-chief at the American Journal of Surgical Pathology: Reviews and Reports .

Pathologists' Assistant Certification & Licensure

Certification for pathologists’ assistants is voluntary, although it is an industry standard and most employers require it. This field’s primary certification is the Pathologists Assistant (PA) certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

To be eligible for this exam, candidates must hold at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university and complete a NAACLS accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program within the past five years. This exam costs $530, must be completed in two and a half hours, and consists of 100 multiple-choice questions.

Licensing requirements for pathologists’ assistants vary by state. For licensing purposes, pathologists’ assistants often fall under the category of clinical laboratory personnel. Aspiring professionals in this field should contact their local state board to learn about licensing requirements and ensure they have the necessary qualifications.
